A bit confused about the plot? Housemates talking about a mysterious something going bump in the night? Here's where YOU can post and catch up on happenings around the castle and in Hogsmeade -- out of character, of course.

This means that unless your student character heard this stuff from other students or witnessed the actual event, your student character doesn't know about it.

Also, this is a reminder to everyone to only post updates on the school plot here. Please do not post the happenings of your student character in here unless it is related to the plot; that should go in the Wizarding World chat thread.

Have fun!

With the Sorting wrapping up, Kamran had a speech to give before setting these hungry students loose on the food. He got to his feet, clearing his throat. "Your attention please," he called to those who hadn't yet deduced that the speech was about to start, and waited until he had exactly that.

"Welcome, and welcome back, to another year at Hogwarts. To those who don't yet know, my name is Kamran Kazmi. You may call me Headmaster Kazmi, or Professor Kazmi." He then half-turned and gestured to each new member of staff, continuing introductions. "A few changes this term. Professor Melody Crabtree will be our new Care of Magical Creatures professor, Professor Adom Madigan is taking on the post of Defence Against the Dark Arts, Professor Tapio Devries will be teaching Herbology, and Professor Sean Davies-Finch is taking on Muggle Studies." A brief pause for an applause of welcome for each new face. "Our new Slytherin Head of House is Professor Javier Hernandez, and Professor Leanne Mancini will be the Head of House for Gryffindor. New Ravenclaws, your Head of House is Professor Norman Carton, and Hufflepuffs, Professor Andromeda Euka."

Most of the students knew the latter two already, but Kamran still pointed out the Heads of Houses for the benefit of the new students who might not know where on earth to go with their immediate concerns.

"Now then. The Forbidden Forest on the edge of the grounds continues to be, as the name suggests, forbidden. To all students. Unless, of course, you have permission from a member of staff." Kamran paused, considering his next words carefully, but delivering them just as matter-of-factly as the rest. "A small section of the ground floor is also off-limits this term. The door to the out-of-bounds area will be clearly marked - do not try to break through it. Explanations will come in due course.

"One final announcement. In the spring, we will be holding a school dance. A party, something to look forward to after some challenging years. You are all invited to assist in the planning and decorating stages, and, of course, to attend. Keep an eye out for planning committee meetings. Any concerns, please address them to your Heads of Houses, or myself."
Students with financial challenges who might worry about what to wear, for one thing, or those who struggled with a change in routine. They knew where to go.

And that was... yes, that was everything. Hopefully these kids had stayed with him long enough to hear that final, and (arguably) most exciting point. "Thank you for your attention. Classes start bright and early tomorrow morning, so make sure to get a good night's sleep. For now, let the feast begin."

And so it did. As Kamran settled back into his chair, the food appeared across all of the house and staff tables, ready to be devoured.

WHAT could possibly be lurking behind that door? :whaa:

Well. Such a year will may come, but it is not this year.

A strange screeching, yowling sound, like a human caterwaul, can be heard echoing throughout the castle. Evidently, it's coming from this out of bounds area, though even stood here the squalling reaches your ears as though echoing through a long tunnel, and somewhat muffled by the door. Nevertheless, it is not what one might consider a particularly reassuring sound.

Perhaps you would be wise to follow instructions and stay away... or perhaps it's worth risking your neck (or, more importantly, your detention-free hours) for a quick, innocent, teeny tiny peek.

first of all, no.

Feel the movement, feel the motion,
Like a wave out on the ocean.

Up is Left and Down is Right,
Forward is around and round;
Touch the fingers of the ground.
It's a hard, hard way to go;
Rush with care and hurry slow.

The rhyme cuts off with a gleeful, childish laugh. What on earth is going on here?

What on Earth could be the origin of this mysterious sound?

Scraaaatch, scraaaaatch, scraaaatch....

What's happening in the Ravenclaw CR? :hmm:

The noise sounds in intervals of a few minutes, becoming louder and more insistent each time. Soon a strange scratching sound accompanies the screeching.

Screeeeeech… scratch, scratch…

Where is that noise coming from? A quick look around will show the common room deserted. Gradually, the scratching becomes louder and more insistent, and soon the scratching is accompanied by a loud screech, like a cat wailing for food. Screeeeech!

Behind the UNlocked Door there seems to be quite the mystery :shruggy:

Tempted? Or is that old 'DO NOT ENTER' sign still more than enough for you to keep your distance? After all, an open door of an apparently forbidden area is practically an open invitation for young, enquiring minds.

If someone had the urge to go poking about, there doesn't appear to be anything standing in their way.

Anything creepy? Well... no. In fact, there's very little to be found at all, fortunately for young students lacking in self-preservation skills.

Just beyond the door is the same side-corridor that always stood here, eerily empty and dim with none of the torches lit. None of the doors along here are locked, and all lead to the usual uninteresting storage areas, broom closets, and spare classrooms.

It would seem that there's nothing to be found at all, but for the fact that an open doorway can be seen way down at the other end of the corridor, and it appears, from this distance, to emerge into sunlight.

If you've come this far, there's no reason not to explore a little further, riiiiight?

getting biggggg philosopher's stone "sir, the vault was empty" vibes here

This is very late, but this is what they found there.

Progressing on through the next doorway, which once led to a large chamber...

... there seems to be nothing dangerous in here either (fortunately for the more curious cats among you). But it is a strange sight nevertheless.

An outdoor scene lies ahead, oppressively hot beyond the threshold, and brightly lit with sunlight shining from the azure sky. The entrance stands where sand dunes transition into forest, and a body of water is visible, glittering in the distance. It's a huge outdoor environment, clearly not naturally occurring within the castle, nor within the country, but if you were to explore further afield you would find that this chamber is still exactly that, extended and rigorously enchanted, existing entirely within the boundaries of the school.

One thing is for certain: whatever was in here, it's not here anymore.

And of note, what they didn't find?!?!??!?!

Stranger Things have happened! Or have they?! :shifty:

On the wall are scratch marks, similar to those that appeared in the castle earlier in the term. And, just as before, these marks form a set of words...

Morning, noon, and evening
I prowled these lonely sands
Found now in greener pastures
Though not in distant lands
Who is your little vandal?
Who writes upon your walls?
Who might have caused a scandal
Beyond these sheltered halls?
Guardian turned treasure
One question and one chance
Find an answer at your leisure
In the meantime, shall we dance?

Explanations abound very soon in a little announcement at the dance:

"Students, a moment of your time, if you please," he called out, withdrawing a small scroll of parchment from his pocket. "I told you at the start-of-term feast, a small section of the castle has been out of bounds to you this year, and I believe I also said explanations would come in due course."

That was now, by the way. Due course was happening. He unscrolled the parchment, and held it ready.

"We've had some, ah, disturbances around the castle this year..." Nothing new there. "And the locked door was recently discovered unlocked, with an enchanted chamber beyond, hot, sandy, partially forested..." The recap was probably not necessary. Word travelled around quickly in the school, but... just in case. "A few of you discovered this message there:

Kamran rolled the scroll back up, and looked around at the students, smiling a rare smile, eyes twinkling slightly which was not concerning at all. "Any thoughts on what this might mean?" Only made sense to ask; these messages were clearly for an audience.

Still outside of the pool of light, she could not yet be seen, but the pounding of paws on the ground announced an... enthusiastic approach.

"We've had her as our guest in the castle all year for her protection, as she was very young and without a mother. Rather vulnerable, you see, to those sought to steal or harm her." Aka, those who had already tried, but they didn't need to get into all that right now. "Now that she's a little older, she'll be staying in the forest and making it her home."

From what Kamran could tell, the creature was very happy with the decision. He gave a sideways glance towards the forest again and quickly stepped down from the dais.

No, a sphinx. Still young - an adolescent, in sphinx years - but with all the elegance of a full grown counterpart as she landed gracefully and sprung up to the raised dais. She would no doubt grow to be somber and sophisticated, mysterious and enigmatic; right now her face was split into a wide, eager grin.

"Hello!"

Right. Yes. Speech.

Getting to his feet, Kamran cleared his throat and called for the attention of the students, temporarily interrupting chatter of summer plans and fond farewells and whatever else happened to be the topic of conversation. When he had quiet, he spoke in a ringing voice for all to hear.

"Good evening, everyone. Only a few small notices before we officially wrap up this term. First, for those who might have missed the news, the out-of-bounds areas on the ground floor will once again be freely accessible next term. The guest we had staying there - a rather precious and highly sought after young sphinx - will be taking up residence in the Forbidden Forest instead, now that she is more able to look after herself." By the way, more reason to not go in there without permission... but that kind of notice was for the start of term. "I have no doubt that you'll be seeing more of her in the future."

Except the seventh years, of course, and those transferring out. Speaking of.

"To those of you leaving us for good, I wish you the best of luck moving forward. Do try to put what you have learnt to good use out there, be it in academia or careers or embarking on thrilling adventures, or building your lives. You're all more than capable of thriving, in whatever way best suits you, so long as you keep putting in the effort." Alright, pep talk and/or lecture over. "All the best to you. And to those of you who will be returning, I look forward to seeing you all again in two months' time. Enjoy your break, and be ready to learn again by then. To those who took the exams, OWL and NEWT results will be owled out to you in a couple of weeks."

Not to be terribly biased or anything - because Kamran would never (out loud)- but he figured he'd find some enjoyment in this next part. "And finally, congratulations are in order for Slytherin house, for winning the House Cup this year." It was getting to be a closer and closer race every year, wasn't it? Kamran led the applause here, and turned a small smile towards his old house, then out at the entire convergence of students. "Now, enjoy your feast. We'll meet again in September." Most of them, anyway.

Kamran sat down and took another sip from his goblet; as he'd finished the speech, the house and staff tables had filled themselves with the usual feast fare.
