The greenhouses have come a long way in just one year, thanks to the efforts of both the outgoing and the incoming professors. Still, they are not quite yet back to where they were and there is still a lot of work to be done. Perhaps you might want to help, when you have a free period?
OOC: Here's a basic guide of what you might find in each greenhouse; please remember to play realistically based on your character's age and skill level!
Credit for the layout of the Greenhouses go to previous Herbology Professors: BanaBatGirl, kayquilz, Shanners, and Samia

It was cold out, yes, but Jude hardly noticed. That was because he had used magic to insulate his clothing: which happened to be basically his usual converse boots, black jeans ripped at the knees and a tee shirt. One his head was a beanie under which most of his long dark brown hair was hidden though a great deal still rested against the side of his face. Nope, he wasn’t getting a haircut just yet. Maybe in a few weeks for Koen’s wedding. Pretty soon he’d be back home, and he couldn’t wait for that because he really needed to have a heart to heart talk with his mother about a topic that was bothering him.
The loud honking from the daffodils made him wince as he approached the section of the greenhouse where they were kept. “Must you little dudes and dudettes be that loud?” he asked, chuckling softly to himself. There came a fresh wave of honks that seemed to chime, “YES. YES, we must be.” What was the purpose of Jude’s visit here? Nothing in particular. Maybe he could help tend to some of the plants while he was on his stroll. In any case, those tiny weeds poking out from between the daffodils were beginning to irk him. For that reason, the Hufflepuff paused to manually remove the little shoots.

Simon often worried about his students in lessons and out of lessons. While Jude’s performance had been up to par, Simon had noticed something about the boy seemed off so he went to do what he did best… which was INVESTIGATE!
Leaving his classroom, he noticed the boy was headed off somewhere so he decided to follow from a safe distance so he could appear casually at the destination where he went too. Realizing that he was headed to the Greenhouses, he dropped back and let things happen. Never intervening but observing.
Once in the greenhouse, he greeted him. “Mr Anders, what are you doing here?”

Gardening was not something Jude did much. Okay, fine. It wasn’t something he did at all and the only time he seemed to ‘sprout’ the green thumb mood was during Herbology lessons. Still… the activity served as a pleasant and distracting one. The freshly plucked weeds were discarded in a neat pile so that he could transfer it to the compost heap. Wait... were there any compost heaps presently in the greenhouses? Nitrogen from grass was rather useful and it would be a shame to waste that.
Jude actually had no idea he was being stalked. Not that he would think anyone had a reason to stalk him of all people in the first place. But the sudden appearance of Professor Holden was certainly welcome and it sent Jude into a small smile. “Hi, professor. Just taking some time to be among nature.” He winced, much like he did when Reagan was being loud around the house, as the daffodils set about honking in unison again. “Care to help me out? I reckon Professor Devries would be grateful.”

Simon returned Jude's smile. Ah, yes. Being alone in nature to clear one's mind was something that he could relate too. In fact, when he was a student here, he often found himself sitting and staring across the Lake with his textbooks in front of him. That or being in the treehouse working on a wizarding detective case with his good mate, Ethan. He, too, winced at the honking from the daffodils.
"Not much peace and quiet with that lot around, yeah? Kinda reminds me of a sound my sister would play on her megaphone when I was sleeping in too late on the weekends," he joked fondly remembering that memory that he had once rolled his eyes at. His sister's target had been his elder brother. He, unfortunately, was collateral damage in that event.
He nodded. "Right. What's the best way to do this?" he asked, turning his gaze to the student. Of course, Simon knew how to do this... at one stage.

Herbology was not his forté.
Jude burst out laughing, probably the first legitimate one he had done in a while, beside those with Keigh. “Why does your scenario sound awfully similar to mine? Oh wait. Reagan actually sounds like a megaphone and honking daffodils.” Holden would know all about how his sixth year Gryffindor sister could be loud and EXTREMELY dramatic. “Sisters are the best though.” Jude would know that better than perhaps anyone else.
“Well…” The Hufflepuff surveyed the daffodils. “You can trim away dead leaves and twigs if you like. Or remove the tiny weeds. There’s also fertilising and watering.” Quite a few options to work with. “Magic makes these tasks easier, especially with trimming.” But Jude would stick with manually pulling out the weeds because his magic? His spellwork had been off lately but maybe Holden didn’t know about that because there wasn’t much spellwork that went on in History of Magic.
And the last thing the Hufflepuff wanted to do was to damage any of DeVries' precious plants.

Laughter was good. It seemed genuine which caused Simon to smile. At the question, Simon simply shrugged. "Both of us know the joy and pain of having a sister?" he joked. He knew Jude's sister and knew just how lively she could be. She was certainly a firecracker. Fierce. Gryffindor to the T. "They are. I was closer to my sister than my brother growing up. Mark... was a squib so I assume there was some envy associated with not being a full witch or wizard. Our parents were muggles." Reflecting on his childhood in the moment, he forgot how emotionally taxing it was. The car accident had been the start of the problems. His father working multiple jobs to keep the medical bills in check, his mother losing her memory, Marcus going off the rails, and Simon... Simon had to be the "good" one. The one who kept everything in equilibrium. Olivia had needed it back then. His father had needed it back then. But that memory was too painful to share.
He listened to the Hufflepuff's instructions as he analysed the honking plants in front of him. "Riight. Got it." Herbology had never been his best subject but he'd try nonetheless. "Alright Professor Anders. I'll begin my task... Are you going to be using magic or your hands?"
Tapio had been aware of the loud (louder than usual) and persistent noise coming from the daffodils for a while now, but he was in the middle of repotting a baby Mandrake, which cannot be interrupted without endangering the plant. Besides, he expected it was just one of the students doing extra work--he knew at least one of his advanced pupils came to check on a project in that area periodically. But as soon as he's gotten the mandrake comfortably settled in the pot, he wiped the dirt from his hands, removed his large, furry earmuffs, and walked out of Greenhouse 3 and into Greenhouse 1 to see what exactly was going on. Just to make sure (because you never knew at Hogwarts)
"What is going on in here?" he began, then, noticing Simon and Jude Anders there, relaxed and put away his wand. "Oh, Simon, Mr. Anders, it's you, then. Doing a bit of extra-curricular work?" His eyes twinkled as he looked at his colleague, for he had not gotten the impression that Holden was particularly adept at Herbology.

“We do,” Jude confirmed with a small smile now. He listened to Holden’s brief recount of family history. It was rare that adults open up about their lives and for that reason he really appreciated Holden. It also was not lost to the Hufflepuff that having a Squib in the family might make things difficult… sort of like it might when there was a witch or a wizard in a Muggle family. “There’s always envy or jealousy involved in that sort of situation, I reckon. No matter how much it may be hidden.” He was rather sorry to hear about Holden’s family woes. “What are Mark and your sister up to these days?” Jude hoped to hear that things had gotten better among the three.
“Try not to harm the plants, professor,’’ the boy remarked lightly. Just a little joke there. “Er… my hands,’’ came a mumbled response. There was no reason that Jude wanted to share about his magic being off. Back to work Jude went though it was not long before they were joined by DeVries. “Hi, professor.” Jude offered the other man a smile. “Sort of? I only came here to clear my head.” Then he was gesturing at the daffodils, a bunch of weeds in the hand he was using. “For some reason they’re awfully loud today.”

”Always. Unfortunately.” Simon liked to be an open book to his students because he felt like he could relate to them better and make himself more relatable in turn. “Mark is married and a father of threez he works for a local Muggle newspaper. I don’t see him too often but he is more open to Olivia and I. Olivia… She’s always been a handful. She was a Gryffindor here. She goes by Vi. She married her school sweetheart, Tenacius, and is a mother of two. She’s a Seer.” He paused for a moment, thinking how different their lives had turned out. “I suppose we made it out all okay eventually.” He joked. “We do celebrate Christmas together. I had them over at my place over the holidays with my wife and my three children.”
Simon chuckled at Jude’s comment, raising both hands in the air momentarily. “I do not promise no harm will come to these plants. If there are… June Flamsteed will haunt me. I know that for sure,” he joked before becoming silent again. Still weird without June.
He had not been expecting Tapio to make an appearance. However, Simon was always content to see another colleague. He arched an eyebrow in response to his question and turned to Jude to answer. “Junior Professor Anders was about to teach me the best approach to handle these noisy fellows. As you know Tapio, Herbology is not my forte.”

"Yes," Tapio replied, "well, there has been a lot of traffic in and out of their geenhouse lately--some of my advanced students are doing projects there--so they're a bit...agitated. And also, spring is coming on." Honking daffodils were always particularly noisy come springtime--showing off for each other, perhaps.

“Care to join?”
"Well, I think perhaps I'd better, since you can't promise you won't harm the plants," Tapio joked back. The comments about June Flamsteed did not escape him; it was the sort of thing he'd heard about school now and then all term. Well, it was only to be expected--students always took it hard when they lost a teacher, particular a popular one, as Flamsteed had apparently been. Five or six years were a small amount of time to an adult, but for a teenager, it was a third or more of their life. Tapio could only hope they would eventually get used to him as well. "I tell you what, it's nearly time to start fertilizing these, I'll just pop into the greenhouse and get some special stuff that just came in this week and, when you're done weeding, perhaps you can help lay out a layer here." Tapio went briefly back into the greenhouse and soon emerged with a large sack of fertilizer, three pails, and three small trowels. "Just put some in these pails and sprinkle a thin layer around the roots, and smooth it out with the trowels if you need to."

Jude rather enjoyed listening and learning about the other Holden siblings and their lives. “I guess what’s important now is that they’re happy and can hopefully fully get over whatever bad feelings there were.” Family was important to Jude; the Anders’ siblings had all been raised by their parents as a close-knit unit. It was part of what inspired him to have a huge family of his own someday. He couldn’t help but grin as he picked up on similarities between his and Holden’s family. First, there were their Gryffindor sisters being a handful. Secondly… “My brother’s getting married to his school sweetheart later this month. He’s not a Seer though, he’s a drummer n a band.” He gave Holden a reassuring look. “I think you made it out and turned out just fine. Mark and Vi did too, I’m sure.” Now Jude felt as though he knew those two, as though he had met them before.
The Hufflepuff chuckled. “Junior Professor Anders wanted to ensure your plants didn’t get hurt, Professor Devries.” Oh? Herbology was Holden’s weak subject? “Maybe Professor Holden can begin to develop a green thumb after today.” Somehow, he knew he wouldn’t get into trouble for being a little cheeky. And truthfully? Jude was very much enjoying the company of his two professors. To think that he had wanted to be alone…
The poor daffodils though; they probably were annoyed about being disturbed. Then again, Jude would probably be disturbing that batch when his sixth and seventh year came around. The boy was all for assisting with applying the fertiliser and couldn’t help joking at Holden’s expense: “Professor Devries, maybe you should give Professor Holden a demonstration… just to be safe.’’ Holding back a laugh, Jude set about adding fertiliser from the sack into the pails with a trowel.

If Tapio could have read Jude's mind, he would have commented that the daffodils, rather than being disturbed, seemed to enjoy showing off and tended to honk all the more vigorously if they were being observed. "Oh, I"m sure Professor Holden can manage very well," Tapio responded, deciding not to focus any more on Simon's expertise (or lack thereof) with plants, or at least not encourage a student to make fun of it. "Thank you," he added, observing Jude with the fertiliser, "you're doing that very well. Just a thin layer of it, now." That last was mainly for Simon, though, because Mr. Anders seemed to have the knack of things already. Tapio suspected he might be seeing him in his N.E.W.T. classes next year.

Jude was not making fun of Holden. He was pretty sure the man could take a joke. What was that saying…? Once you accepted your flaw, no one could use it against you? Yep, that was it. In any case, he was rather focused on applying the right amount of fertiliser on the first daffodil, which happened to be creating quite the ruckus, by the way. Perhaps if he ignored it and the others… not that it mattered because applying thin layers fertiliser did require focus if you wanted to get things done properly.
When he normally worked on something, one could hear him humming softly to himself. Today though? Jude wasn’t in the mood; he simply preferred to work silently. Oh definitely, Professor Devries! You were surely going to find this Hufflepuff in your NEWT classes!
