Out beyond the perimeter of the dance floor and the food tables, a small network of quiet paths ring the event, passing under softly lit trellis archways wound through with ivy. The paths are lined with fragrant plants and shrubbery, and the occasional bench. Iridescent fairies flit around the foliage and perch, preening, up on the archways.
This is the perfect place for a quiet stroll, or a break from the main action if you're starting to feel overwhelmed; it's an area somewhat removed from the liveliness of the event while remaining a part of it. While still just about audible, the music is quietest here, and the vibe is a peaceful one.

Being Evan’s date DID mean a lot to him but having time with his sister here at the event meant just as much to Jude. Like he had told her a few days ago, they were going to make all of their moments count. She was also entitled to all the dances with him that she wanted. The fifth year chuckled softly as he watched Keigh blush. “You’re welcome. You know it’s the truth though.” She was becoming such a great young woman and would definitely be a heartbreaker.
Evan liked him enough to consider him his best friend {though heartbreakingly nothing more}, Ash! Don’t worry, Jude and Keighley were completely cool and non-judgemental! “Keigh wouldn’t mind.” Jude knew she wouldn’t; after all, she was rather friendly. “That’s the spirit! It’s worth the shot.” As for the handkerchief? He didn’t mind if it was returned or not. Ashley needed it more than he did, anyway.
Ash’s remark couldn’t be debated: V and Stewie DID look cute! He nodded and replied softly, “They sure do. I think if V knew that, her head would swell so much.” Jude chuckled at the thought. He liked watching Victoria be all excited, even if she came off as a little showoffy, about her dress. Also, was it just him or did she seem a little too clingy to Stewie? Who was Jude to judge? They were all here to have a good time, right? “Yes, I agree! You look super handsome, Stewie!’’ he responded, meaning it. “Thank you, V! I was thinking of heading to the dance floor soon myself. I owe Keigh a dance.” He gave his baby sister a warm smile. But then… he guessed he would see V and Stewie later as V was dragging Stewie away. Okay then. Lovebirds gotta do what lovebirds gotta do, huh?
Right! So… “Let’s see who can stand still for the longest, Keigh? Ash?” Challenge accepted? Nay?

Mercer considered both of them as he landed. His friends were entirely themselves all the time, but neither of them were as easy to read as everyone else in the universe. Maybe that was why he appreciated them - his own little mysteries who kept their stories close. No, he appreciated them because they let him be entirely himself without doing that sort of lean-out that a lot of people did.
"I exist, and no one is watching." Of course, Milo probably would say that they WERE watching, but people probably did watch Milo? Milo was super interesting. "I would like to dance, yeah. Like a real shake-your-booty-and-get-sweaty kind of dance." He shook his booty as a demonstration. "Wait, you got salt, Suki?" His eyes drifted to where here attention was caught, but he didn't see anything interesting.

SPOILER!!: professional nepotism baby

Fashion had that kind of power, he mused. The awful uniforms they were forced to endure all year long brought out the worst in his peers. It was hard to be your best in ugly clothes. But tonight, at the dance, with everyone in feathers and frills, the evening had a magic that had nothing to do with spell casting.
Good clothes made people brave, you see. A true super power.
Even his little sister who had not had as easy a time settling into this new school as he did was shining. Antonia was not a dull thing and this night complimented her natural charisma well. He saw that, even if she did not.
When she was occupied, he slipped away. The dazzling shine of his dress robes, dripping with diamonds like falling water, tamed somewhat when he dipped into the archways.
He walked for some time alone.
And then, he saw Kinsay.
”You promised me a dance,” he said, making himself known.
"Mm, did I?" Kins turned, offering Gideon a small, sheepish smile. In truth, she hadn't expected to run into anyone here, assuming most were still dancing the night away. But she had recognized his voice before turning to see him and knew better than to be surprised. She did owe him a dance, afterall. And she didn't mind his company, not really. She never did. Even if she wanted to escape from everyone else just for a little, little bit. Gideon wasn't overwhelming the way other people sometimes were.
She reached for one of her necklaces, as if to re-center it. "I always keep my promises. You know that." The same way he kept his. The dress was stunning by the way. It had her feeling all sorts of confident. Ways she hadn't felt for months. "Do you want your dance now? Here?" She tilted her head, voice soft, features softer.
Whatever he wanted. She promised.

In her eyes she spent nearly all of her time with Jude and that was how she liked it to be. This was a special occasion here at Hogwarts however and her big brother with the huge heart deserved to have the best night with his date and not have to focus on her tagging along all night. She was more than capable of entertaining herself. "You won't let me forget." Her family was the best at reminding each other how beautiful and perfect they all were. Confidence building at it finest.
Keighley didn't say anything as Jude chatted with Victoria and Stewie but she gave the pair a warm smile. They looked nice. The mention of a dance brought a smile to her lips. "Which I'll happily accept anytime you're ready." But first..
They were turning this into a challenge?! The Hufflepuff in green tonight smiled sweetly. "I say, let's do this." Challenge accepted. All she had to do was stay still and be quiet long enough that a fairy may fly over and land on her. Easier said than done, she was sure.

Ash was relieved that Keighley didn't mind. Like, Jude had already invited her to stay but she didn't want to annoy anyone by being there. She gave the both of them a small smile, mentally adding them to the list of Super Cool People Who Ash Should Probably Get To Know. Because they were great, really. She sat very still on the bench, waiting for a fairy(were they real? she didn't want to ask) to maybe land on her. Or a random butterfly. Or a snowflake... it was not snowing. That didn't really make sense.
Just as soon as Mitsuki's grip loosened, Milo withdrew his hand, shook his sleeve down, and wound his fingers into the fabric. Now... now he could think a little clearer, though he could not have explained (at least in words that anyone understood) the relationship between sensory and cerebral. Affection and attention. Thunder and thought and caught and fraught.
It was at that moment (and a moment too late to catch Mitsuki's glance) that Milo's gaze drifted towards the other Ms in the trifecta, before pinballing leisurely off to whatever they were looking at. He stared, and kept staring, neither knowing nor - eventually - caring what the object of attention was supposed to be, until he had entirely forgotten his reason for looking away. Instead he watched the fairies in the foliage around the nearest archway.
He returned gradually to the moment and realised that he had (to the untrained eye) already started dancing, and was swaying from side to side, though not strictly (read: remotely) in time with the music. Milo opened his mouth to add that he was ready to dance, but the words that actually came out were, "You have salt in your sweat." And then, "But too much sweat out here is unwise. You'll feed them." Too human, see. At a convergence like this that salt could well have the opposite effect, but it was unlikely Mitsuki had neglected to bring her own non-perspiration variety.

Gideon wasn’t usually one for silence. He liked a crowded room or a busy dance floor or a laughter-filled dinner party until all hours of the morning. But he could see the occasional merit of silence. This path was alarmingly quiet, especially in comparison with the flash of the party mere steps away. It was like being shrouded in another sonar world. One step from revelry.
Like some kind of fae prince from the old stories, the dangerous ones that danced with mortals until they dropped from exhaustion, he inked forward, gliding info Kinsay’s space. He grinned down at her. “Are you offering?”
In those old stories about the fae— the ancient ones who could only tell the truth and so never lied (but instead dodged questions with crafty means)— you were never supposed to accept their offers to dance. It was the one rule.

And yet.
And yet.
Kinsay didn't like rules. Not usually. Well, she didn't like rules that were set for her. She did, however, like to test rules. She liked to pick them apart, set them under microscopes and understand them. She even liked setting her own rules. And, when it came to following them, she tried her best. But even then, she did so with a curious edge. Kinsay James liked to see how much the rules could bend. She poked and prodded relentlessly. Incessant in her assessment of malleability.
And so, when Gideon asked, Kinsay only shrugged. "Maybe," she replied, meeting his grin with a small one of her own, coy in its nature.
It was only the one dance. And she had promised. If there was the one rule, she hadn't heard it.

Pffft. Jude could have Keighley in tow anytime, anyplace and he wouldn’t care. She was one of his favourite persons and he would go to the moon and back for her if needed. He would never forget how she took care of him for months on end while he nursed his broken heart. “Nope, not ever!’’ He loved to see a confident Keigh! It was settled then! He was going to have a dance or two with the little sister! Jude couldn’t wait! Keigh was a very good dancer. It was too bad she was into MMA more than dance because he would have loved to have her as a permanent partner.
Jude definitely didn’t find it annoying to have Ashley there with them. It seemed that she needed the company and perhaps he and Keigh could help distract her from any bad thoughts she was having. He stood very still with the two ladies but didn’t close his eyes. He still had his hand linked with his sister and he was watching Ashley. He hoped she was relaxing her mind as well…

Mercer's consistency was endearing. His dancing, however, was confusing. At least at first. She soon decided, though she would not be seeking clarification, that his movements must be inspired by the mating dances of the kelpie on the loch. His family, gifted with creatures, surely had observed things and the movement of nature was among the most natural of movements. Her own dance moves, however, required a prop she did not possess nor had she brought with her to Hogwarts. It was currently situated in the storage at Himitsumahou - unless they were able to retrieve one from the Room of Requirement eventually. She could pantomime, perhaps.
Not yet joining in any rhythm, on or off, Mitsuki observed the scene for a couple more clicks before moving her arms to her own rhythm and as though she were pushing an incredibly heavy mop. A mop which she was painting an airy figure eight on the ground between her two friends.
"I do," she nodded to Mercer while her hand went to pat one of the pockets on her poofy skirt, something Becky had added. "But...why do you require it?" Her question could be an echoing of Milo's warning, though it had not been the intention when she spoke the words. Her eyes glanced around once again, flicking towards Yumeki-senpai once more before casting to the surrounding flora that was shrouded in darkness and only highlighted here and there by the gentle illuminations.

Any other time, Keighley wouldn't have minded tagging along with Jude. Except this was a dance and in a short while he wasn't going to be alone. He didn't need her hanging around all night long. There was plenty of things for her to do and they could always meet up at different points of the night for a little while if they chose to do so. She smiled brightly at Jude and gave him a playful nudge with her shoulder. "You can drag me off to dance anytime you like." Whenever was best for him. It really didn't matter too much to her.
Having Ashley join them on their quest to have a fairy land on one of them was nice. Keighley thought the older girl looked like she could use the company and even more so the distraction. She only hoped that it worked. With her hand still holding onto her big brothers, she shifted her weight so she could lean ever so slightly against him, her arm against his arm. Not a sound was made now as she stood there very still. Waiting, watching and wandering if something would happen.
Oh, please let a fairy land upon one of them. All of them! How magical that would be!
