Sixth-Floor Corridor

It goes without saying that the sixth-floor corridor is a curious one. Several doors can be found along this carpet-lacking hallway that mostly lead to storerooms, a few classrooms, and rooms that are locked for reasons unknown to you. Though the most notable features of the sixth floor are the Transfiguration and Music classrooms and a tapestry covering a long crack in the wall where a mysterious portal had once been.

While there isn't much to explore on this floor, at least the bust of Glanmore Peakes will give you something to look at. But if admiring the sea serpent slayer isn't really your thing, there are plenty of bizarre portraits to talk to. Temeritus Shanks is always up to date about the details being printed in the Prophet and swears every word in it is true; Vindictus Viridian will give you some pointers on how to get revenge on your enemies using a few choice potions; and Wendelin the Weird, well, she doesn't really have much to say because she's too busy laughing maniacally while "burning" at the stake.

Or perhaps a certain nook containing a cage with two birds, one black and one white, will capture your attention. How did those get there?

for taylor!

So. many. rooms.

Nerina was nosy so of course she was wandering the halls, casually checking which doors were unlocked. A gentle twist of a door knob here, a little push there. It was the doors that wouldn't open for her that made her pause the longest. Like the one she was currently standing in front of, ear pressed to the wood. She could've sworn she'd heard something inside. She was tempted to knock, but for now she was just listening.

The fifth year liked Hogwarts. It wasn't as flashy as Beauxbatons and everything felt more like it had been slapped together by some wonky charms rather than anything more intentional, but the brick structure still somehow commanded respect. He wondered if it was the mischief that was built in the castle's DNA. Things never were what they seemed and that was, if not else, intriguing.

What was not new, not unexpected, was the familiar sight Gideon happened upon on the sixth floor. It was like something pulled straight from the pages his childhood. Nerina. Where she wasn't supposed to be. Gideon felt pressure, the same one he often saw his father pinch whenever work was exceptionally stressful, mount behind his eyes. And the Slytherin said rather dryly, "What're you doing?"

Could he feel her eye roll even though she wasn’t looking directly at him? She hoped so. She was trying to listen over here, couldn’t he tell?

”What does it look like I’m doing, Gideon?” She responded quietly because she didn’t want to alert anyone inside that she was snooping. ”I swear I heard something in there.” And she wanted to know what or who was behind the door and what they were doing and what the room was used for. ”Only some of the doors are locked and I’m pretty sure this isn’t an office.”

"What do we gain from figuring it out, Nerina?" Gideon asked, propping his forearm up against the doorframe. His voice wasn't unkind, but it did manage to hit that sweet spot between sounding genuinely curious and yet all-knowing. Because if history taught Gideon Emerson anything, it was that he was both.

At least when it came to his childhood companion.

Raising her eyebrows a little, Nerina poked him in that very same forearm. ”We? I intended for this to be a solo quest.” A fact finding mission, if you will. And she didn’t like the way he questioned her all the time. It was annoying.

”Maybe I’ll figure out if this is some abandoned classroom that’s good for snogging or a broom closet filled with creepy crawly things that are better left alone. Maybe this is a secret meeting place for professors who are having a romance.” She smiled a bit at the thought. The possibilities are endless.”

He was annoying? Fine. But she was lurking.

Gideon pushed his forearm off the doorframe and started to stride down the corridor. Leaving her be, as she had indelicately insinuated she wanted. "Sounds unlikely, if you ask me," the fifth year threw over his shoulder. "But if you want to get in trouble for poking around where you shouldn't be, I'm sure your parents will be thrilled to get the news."

"It's not that unlikely," She grumbled, about to knock on the door just to try and prove her point. Only then he had to go and mention her parents and her brightly manicured hand paused mid-movement. "Wait." This school wasn't that strict. It couldn't be. "You don't actually think I'd get into trouble just for being curious. Surely the staff here have more pressing things to worry about than a fifth year wondering what's behind a locked door." Yet even as she questioned his suggestion, the seed of worry had been planted. The very last thing she'd needed after convincing her parents that she should be allowed to attend Hogwarts was for them to get an owl that she'd broken some rule the first week of school.

Oh. Now she wanted to listen to him? How typical of Nerina. He was usually right from the jump-- it was a curse, really-- but she always reveled in being belligerent over being right.

Her parents were an interesting pressure point, though, and not one he meant to push. He was only making an observation. His own would be furious with him if he was barely into his new school and got in trouble.

Still. He stopped. Because as much as they liked to needle one another, Gideon supposed he could admit they were something close to friends. Or at least workplace proximity partners. "I don't know what they do or don't find pressing, Nerina. That's the whole point. You barely know this school and you're lurking."

Nerina didn’t mind that he was right. Okay, maybe she minded a little, but what she minded more was how serious he could be sometimes. It made her feel like her actions were childish or stupid and she didn’t like feeling that. Feeling like her parents would be disappointed in her.

”I don’t like that word.” Lurking. It certainly wasn’t a word that should be used in association with her. ”But I’ll allow mousing or slinking...and I’ll stop, even though I was doing it to get to know this school.” Learn her surroundings. Get the lay of the land.

The brunette stepped away from the door and smoothed her skirt. What’re you doing up here, anyway?”

Gideon didn’t think Nerina was stupid. She was actually quite clever. But she was nosy and perhaps a little too curious for her own good. Something he had seen up close almost every day of their childhood. If she was upset by common sense, well, that was her problem.

He didn’t even address her word choice. She could pick whichever she liked. It was still synonymous with lurking. Which she was doing. Without question.

“I’m trying to sort the stairs,” Gideon admitted. ”They move.”

"I've noticed." Nerina inched away from the door and leaned her back against the cool stone instead, thoughtful. " Rowena Ravenclaw invented them and Benjee told me you can figure them out after watching them a while." Which had been a helpful tip, as she'd gotten stuck on the wrong floor a few times since she started here. "Also apparently you can get stuck on certain steps. Like, actually quick-sand type stuck. Might want to watch out for that."

Gideon sighed. Long and strained. It was bad enough that these steps moved and spat him out places he never intended to be, but now Nerina was saying that there was also prank magic built into the design. He liked Hogwarts, he reminded himself. He was here for a reason.

"Besides snooping, what are you doing up here?" The fifth year didn't want to talk about the steps anymore. They would continue to plague him and he needed to learn to move past it, otherwise he would spend many an afternoon upset.
