pupppiessssssss !!! Um hi. anyone want to partner with us, that's cool :3

Did Apollo know about demons? Not really. But he was preoccupied when Lisa mentioned about her siblings being demons and the Gryffindor had become distracted with thoughts of trying to figure out which Nam sibling was the demon? Because from his chats and studies with Maya, it seemed as if Lisa was the most likely culprit here? No matter though because they were moving on to talking about the demon in the room - errr grounds - that is to say nogtails. Did Apollo know what a nogtail was? Nope, but if he had to guess it had a tail. He really ought to have paid more attention to Grandpa Tanc, although he wasn't sure that he worked with those kinds of creatures? Apollo was almost sure it was more dragons, so perhaps he'd be forgiven for not reading his textbook. Heh

BUT no matter because BEFORE they got to the demon creatures, they got to play with PUPPIESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apollo felt like a five year old at christmas only it wasn't christmas and he was fourteen which in Arithmancy numbers is five, so suppose it fits *ahem*. His eyes darted around as his classmates started working with various puppies of all sizes, attempting to bond with them. Ooh what was that little floof ?? Striding over to a Bichon Frise, he squatted down beside it. "hiiii there... I'm Apollo." The Gryffindor cooed, "does doggy want to sit?" Hmm, maybe he should have grabbed a couple treats before approaching a dog?

Looking around, she noticed she was near another first year girl, Delilah, with a poodle. Violet had never been much into poodles--with their weird haircut, they always seemed a bit sissified. But...she remembered that they were supposed to be among the most intelligent of dogs, which would definitely be useful. So she walked up to the younger girl and said, "Mind if I join you?"

The puppies running around and the children squealing was madness. And while she would like love as much as the next dog, she could wait. The dog sat for a moment, looking around the clearing before spotting a girl zoning in on her.

Oh? Was she being called? The poodle blinked a few times at the student, before standing and prancing over towards her. She could see the treat dangled and while she DID want it, and did understand the request… she was going to need love and being told what a good girl she was first. Which as another girl approached and still did not pet her, Lola gave a small bark as if admonishing them, before turning once and giving a half sit - a tease that she COULD listen.

Did they get her message?

No sooner had Delilah dangled the treat in the air, she was joined by a slighter older girl. She glanced away from the poodle and gave the girl a smile. "Yeah, of course. Violet, right?" she asked. She'd heard the name mentioned in some of the classes, but they'd never formally met. "I'm Delilah." Just in case she hadn't heard the name mentioned anywhere. Thank Merlin someone had come along to partner up with her. As a first year and someone who still didn't have a ton of friends, the whole partnering-up thing in classes was still a little nerve-racking.

She turned her attention back to the poodle, who was really starting to put on a show. "Oh, look how cute she is!" Delilah exclaimed. She squinted at the dog's tags. There was nothing wrong with Delilah's eyesight, but the puppy was turning and halfway sitting. "Can you read what her collar says?" she asked Violet. Delilah sighed and lowered the treat. "I don't think she's going to actually sit. Maybe we need to start petting her or something..." Delilah bent her legs at the knees and clapped her hands against her thighs. "Come here, girl!" She reached out a hand as if to silently ask for permission to pet her (you know, without getting bit or snapped at).

Summer had been listened to the Professor with awe, but now she was supposed to partner up with someone and do something, she was a bit frighten. "Professor can I partner with you?" It had worked in another lesson, so maybe it would work in this one.

He certainly smelled harmless. So with that decision, Bess nudged her head under the boys hand so he could properly pet her. The girl then offered a hand as well, and Bess repeated the process, forcing the outstretched hand to pet her once which was invitation that she could now proceed to do so.

Say, did either of them have treats? She sniffed for it.

SPOILER!!: Question 2 catch-up
Had Desiree known that she reminded Jude of a fairy princess, she would've been over the moon. Fairy princesses were the best kind! As such, she was content with the compliment. She studied his face for a moment, worried what he’d think of her reason for hiding. Would he think she was a ditz? The reassurance eased her mind and got a small smile in reply. What a princely thing to say!

Whoa, what? She actually got it right?! Desiree was all smiles as the professor acknowledged her. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught Jude’s grin and returned it with a beaming smile, but there wasn’t much time to dwell on her success before the lesson moved on. She listened carefully to the professor. The notice about wearing clothes they wouldn’t mind getting dirty made a lot more sense now! Piggies were dirty, and if a nogtail looked like one, it seemed possible that it would act like one too.

She tried to think of a fact about the nogtail to give, but she had more questions than anything else. Why was it called a nogtail? Was its tail the color of eggnog or something? What exactly did the nogtail’s curse do? Turn people into frogs? Or hideous beasts? Make them sleep for a hundred years? Why was it only black white dogs that could chase it away? And what if someone could turn themself or something else into a white dog? Her dad worked with several transfiguration professors who were animagi… none that could turn into dogs that she knew of, but the question remained. Of all her questions, that one weighed most on her mind, so that was the one she asked. “Professor, if a white dog chases away nogtails, could someone or something transfigured into a white dog do the same?” she asked after raising her hand.

Desiree wasn’t sure she wanted to face a nogtail, but at least it wasn’t a water demon! She blinked, unsure whether to be curious or worried as the fence appeared. She eyed the shed, half-expecting a mob of nogtails to burst out at any moment, but instead she saw DOGGIES!!! Asdfjkl!!! So cute!

Her face immediately brightened, and she had to bite her tongue to stop herself from squealing out loud. Her blue eyes darted from Jude to the approaching Miniature Bull Terrier and back. She smiled, nodding emphatically. “You can say that again!” she replied. Nope, she wasn’t afraid of dogs! Water demons, yes; nogtails, probably, but not cute little doggies! Following Jude’s lead, she crouched, offering a hand to the dog. “Hi, doggy! I like your ears; they’re so cute and pointy!” Would it let her pet it now?

He and Desiree were going to have a great time with this lesson! Jude just knew it. He watched as their doggo sized them up. He didn’t mind: it was good not to be so trusting {something which he definitely needed to learn}. The Hufflepuff held still, letting the doggo make up its mind. He really didn’t think of a reason for it to not like him: Jude happened to have pure intentions every single moment of his life. The tactic worked! He was being sniffed at and the doggo came closer for him to pet and to read the tag. “Bess. Hi, Bess! It’s so nice to meet you!” The older Hufflepuff patted her cute little head. “You’re a pretty girl, did you know?”

Desiree was certainly right about those pointy ears! But they were all part of Bess’ beauty. “Oops. With all the doggie excitement, I forgot to grab some treats. Hang on. I’ll be right back!” Jude hastily got to his feet, grabbed the treats and was back in about a minute. “Here, Desiree. You can feed her too.” Jude shared some with his partner then held two of the treats out for Bess.

celyyyyn and fire demon leo

Milo had never owned a dog before, or been up close to one, except those owned by the people in Godric's Hollow. Occasionally he'd see them while walking, but that was it. He knew enough about them, however, to know they liked chasing and catching things for hours at a time, and so picked up the stick-not-stick he'd been delivered. Assuming that this was, in fact, a dog. And it occurred to him now that possibly it wasn't.

He looked over when Mercer's brother's friend joined him on the ground, nodded, and threw the stick for the puppy(?) to fetch. "Fire sign." Leo. Likely only the name and not its actual sign - though Milo didn't know how to judge a dog(?)'s age and couldn't be certain - but maybe significant all the same. Maybe more so. Names had power.

Glancing at the girl - Celyn, that was her name, Celyn - again, Milo blinked hard and said, "Are these the demons? I was listening to something else."

"Delilah, right," replied Violet, who would have been mortally offended to know this little first year lion considered her eighteen-year old self only 'slightly' older. But she would have sympathized with the dread of pairing up; even after five years, Violet still felt awkward about that herself.

Turning her attention to the non-sitting poodle, Violet offered "Maybe try pushing gently on her rump while you say 'sit'--I think I read that in a book somewhere." And, bending down, Violet tried that very thing herself: "Sit--sit," she said in what she hoped was a firm voice, and with her right hand, firmly but gently gave the dog's rear end a push downward.

Valentina half-listened to the instructions, immediately distracted by all the cute puppies. After a moment, she immediately gravitated towards a beautiful little husky that was looking at her curiously. Maybe she'd get to play with the puppy and not have to go near a nogtail at all. Hopefully. She sat down on her knees, grinning at the little girl.

"Hi, want to be my friend?" Pretty please?

This particular husky, Wynter as her tag read, was still POUTING. Ears tilted back, she was sitting and watching the other puppies playing with children while simultaneously glaring at the old gentleman. She had helped create most of the destruction which SERVED HIM RIGHT. HMPH.

But in her glancing around, one girl not yet paired with anyone caught her eye and her ears lifted with her head tilting curiously from side to side as she eyed the girl. Once the girl was down on her knees, Wynter had bounded herself forward from seated position and pranced over to the girl, tongue lolling. Hi, yes, provide endless affection and pets and would happily be FRIENDS.

She still was determined to hold one before the end of the year. But Cooper was right, it did sound like hooves in there, and... oh, nogtails! Celyn brightened at the mentioned and giggled quietly as Cooper nudged her. This was going to be a fun lesson.

Oh! Yes, she knew about the use of pure white dogs to chase out nogtails from farms, though... she hoped they weren't actually chasing them away today. But she was very excited about working with.... puppies!! Celyn quickly covered her mouth with her hand to suppress the delighted squeal as dozens of puppies tumbled out of the barn doors. The seventh year loved puppies!

"Oh.." Celyn turned to Cooper as he tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and suggested her work with his little brother. "Of course!" She gave him a reassuring smile very suddenly. "Yes of course that makes sense..." They didn't have to always work together, especially since they just had been working together in the greenhouses. And Mercer probably did need Cooper's guidance. She was sure she could offer the same to another younger student. "See you out there!"

Oh, Milo! She noticed the first year as she looked around... and decided that yes, he very likely could use a seventh year's guidance. Celyn walked over to where the younger Ravenclaw was sitting on the ground with a white puppy frolicking nearby and she took a seat next to him and gave him an extra friendly smile. "Hi, Milo! Would you like to work with me and..." She turned to the puppy and put her hands out in front of the dog so he could sniff and check her out to know she was a friend. "Leo!" Her eyes caught sight of the tag on the pup's collar. "I think he wants to play." And she was good at throwing sticks.

OH LOOK. Another human! This one female! Leo leaned forward to take a quick sniff at her offered hand, but got distracted once again when he heard her say the magic word. Stick. And while he didn’t know what the other words were surrounding, the magic word itself was enough to get an excited yap from him before he did a quick spin and hunkered down again.

Please throw. Please throw. Please.

THE BOY HAD PICKED IT UP. Another excited yap and spin while he anxiously awaited its release. Eyes FOCUSED.

Once it was out of the boy’s hand Leo was off like a rocket, bounding around the others and jumping over another dog in order to catch the stick in mid air and zoom back with it. This time, he presented it to the girl.

He was putty in their hands if they’d throw stick.

And when Cooper joined them, Mercer knew that he now had a dog. "Hi! Oh! Okay, so... Cooper, this is a dog... he's like a Marshmallow. Marshmallow fluffernutter dog, this is Cooper." He tried to see if the dog had a tag, like some of the other ones did, but he was a wiggly little happy pup.

"We should see if he can do the tricks, right? Sit? Can you sit? Sit?" Mercer sat, just to show what it looked like. "Lay DOWN?" And Mercer flopped over.

Wiggling was the BEST. And excessive wiggling meant more opportunities to jump at both humans and trying to give them kisses. HI YES, PLEASE ACCEPT HIS LOVE TOO. There was a tag hidden amongst all his fluff, his previous trainer not providing NEARLY enough of a bright color to be spotted.

When the younger human said words in a string at him, there was a few the pup had understood but he still stared curiously, his head cocking from side to side with each new word. It wasn't until the boy demonstrated that the dog followed suit, his butt still wiggling against the ground with the force of his tail wags.

But the lay down.... well that was just too much temptation. The pup BOUNDED forward, flopping himself across the boy.

Technically, he was laying. And perhaps this would give opportunity for the boy to see his tag named Zeus. Hoped he didn't mind all the face licks in the meantime.

Someone had made an egregious error. Sasha, as this puppy dogs name tag read, was not a puppy. She was a n c i e n t in dog years. And all of the energy of the little dogs JUMPING all over her had her entirely exhausted. She’d been standing there, just watching all of them when a young boy approached her and she turned tired, yet curious eyes towards him. Was this a calm child? Would he just sit and pet her? Perhaps allow her to stretch across his lap for a mid morning snooze?

The boy asked her if she wanted to sit, and the dog gave a small bark in reply before doing as he’d asked. She’d LOVE to take a sit, thank you for asking.

Cue large dog yawn.

Yes she WAS cute, thank you for noticing human. She nearly sat then and there, but in a show of stubbornness decided to wait for her pet too before being fully obedient. One had to show a firm hand with their humans, y’know.

The smaller one already had the right idea too it seemed though, as a hand was offered. Lola gave a happy bark, before closing the distance and nudging the girl’s hand, giving it a quick lick.

She was waiting for the younger to start petting her, when she felt a hand on her rump. Flipping her head, Lola eyed the hand before squirming away from it and moving herself to the other side of the small one and sitting beside her. Excuse you, older student! Where was her affection first!? She eyed her suspiciously.

Cyril had been perched with a Maltese puppy alternating between pouncing gently on his back and rolling itself into his lap while he observed the students. So far, he was liking what he was seeing. There was only a few of the pups who had actually listened to instructions, whether intentionally or on accident that was unknown, but at least all the students seemed to be bonding with them. Even if listening skills weren’t on point, the bond and a dog's natural desire to protect might be enough.

Hearing Ms. Valentine call his name, he turned his attention to the young girl, softening a bit more when he noted how scared she seemed to be. She wanted to partner with him? He glanced around at the students, before looking back at the girl. “I think Ms. Valentine, that I would be a poor partner as I do need to be observing the others.” Just in case any of the pups got to be TOO much, which.. He eyed a poodle with Blackthorne suspiciously and a Great Pyrenees that he certainly hoped was not smothering the young Mr. Branxton. “It looks like Mr. Adara-Stark is still partnerless. Perhaps you’d like to join him? And I’m right here observing you and your classmates if I’m needed.”

He’d keep an eye specifically on her for comfort too, but the dog with Apollo seemed fairly docile. The best listener so far of the bunch.

Desiree watched the doggy intently, curious to see what he - she? - was going to do. Not that she expected the dog to bite or anything like that, but animals were weird sometimes! She felt a slight pang of jealousy when the cute doggy went to Jude first, but she couldn’t blame him/her. Jude was friendly like that!

Anyway, it wasn’t long before the doggy - Bess, apparently - came to her too. Desiree giggled. Bess sounded like a grandma name, but this little doggy didn’t act much like a grandma! She wondered where that name came from. Maybe this Bess was named after someone’s grandma? More giggles followed as Bess sniffed and nudged her hand. She didn’t need to be forced; she was all too willing to give Bess all the pets she wanted. “Hi, Bess! I’m Desiree, and he’s Jude. Let’s be friends!” she said as if she were a Disney princess talking to her animal sidekick, petting Bess all the while. “Aww, you’re such a cutie patootie!”

Desiree blinked as Jude spoke. What? Oh, right, treats. She gave her partner a vague nod. Aww! Bess's whine sounded so sad! Desiree wasted no time in giving her alllll the pets. "It's okay. He'll be back soon."

And she was right!

Desiree giggled at Bess's barking and jumping. “Are you still hungry, girl?” she said, taking a couple of treats and offering them to Bess when she'd finished the ones Jude gave her.. It was only then that she remembered the professor’s instructions, and her blue eyes darted from the doggy to Jude. “When she’s done eating, shall we try giving her some commands?”

So biding time was the best option, even as it’s fluffy body positively vibrated with excitement - his tail wagging wildly against the ground.

Thankfully the wait was not long, as a boy started coming towards him. The puppy gave an excited bark in greeting, before happily standing and prancing over to him. The outstretched hand was given a lick before he nudged it with his head.

Cedar, here and requesting affection please human.

A small smile tucked on the corners of his mouth as the Samoyed approached his outstretched hand and gave it a lick before the dog nudged his head against it. Still crouched down, Daniel began to rub the dog behind his ears for a while.

Oh right, he was meant to make the dog listen to his instructions. The Hufflepuff took away his hand and stood up. "Stay" he said in a commanding tone as he took a few steps backwards. If the Samoyed listened to him, he promised to give it some treats.

SPOILER!!: Tundra!
Quote:

How DARE the old human leave them CAGED. He’d even had the GALL to ignore the long howls of DISTRESS. Had there been toys to play with? Yes. Was there water and some kibble? Also yes. But you know what was missing? PETTING. COMPANIONSHIP. The husky puppy felt STARVED of it all.

So when the door was opened he was OUT and in the sunlight. And there were… so … many… humans. Which one to go see first!? Who looked the best for pets?!

Puppy narrowed in on a girl who’d put herself down at his level and looked to be speaking to him. Did he understand the words? Not really. Except for one key word. PLAY. With a lift of his head and an “HOOOOOOOOWL”, he was off bounding towards the girl, pouncing into her lap. If one looked closely, they might even see the collar on his neck identifying him as Tundra.

Hi new best friend.

Jordyn did not have to wait long because the cute husky came and sat in her lap. ”Hi there buddy”, she said with a laugh. “You sure are friendly.”. Scratching her new friends head, she looked him over. “Oh yes, we are going to be very good friends.”

Jordyn continued to stroke his head and back. This was making her long to see her pets at home. Noticing that the puppy had a tag, she saw that he had a name. “Tundra huh? Well Tundra, you are definitely the cutest puppy ever.”. Jordyn thought that this was the perfect time to offer the husky a treat. “Here you go Tundra. I hope you like puppy treats.”

Jordyn was loving this puppy. Could she keep him? Could she….huh?, huh?

Yup. Two puppies. This was going to be a most excellent lesson.

Crouching down a little more, though not entirely laying down as his brother was and joining the puppy pile (if there were not a lesson then Cooper would have absolutely joined in), he reached out to give their Great Pyrenees a loving scratch (or several) behind the ears and was about to comment on Mercer's naming inconsistencies when he spotted the collar and attached tag nestled beneath all that marshmallow fluff.

"Looks like our new pal's name is Zeus," he cooed, peak baby voice while continuing to ruffle those adorable ears and really get right in there with moving his fingers along the back of the dog's head fluffing all that fur along his neck. "And what a mighty name it is. Yes it is. And you're just as quick as a thunderbolt. Yes you are."

Okay, he was getting a little caught up in the moment and jovial loyalty of their class companion.

"Okay Zeus," Cooper continued while drumming on his thighs a bit. "Come here buddy. Let's see how well you heel." Cooper straightened a bit and pointed to his right side with a whistle. "Come, Zeus."

Not to deny Mercer more face licking and furry cuddles or anything. Surely there could be time after all this for more...because Cooper himself really wanted to jump into a puppy pile.

Celyn's suspicions were correct - the puppy did indeed want to play - and she couldn't help the light giggle escaping her lips as Milo threw the stick and Leo took off after it like a loaded spring. "Fire sign? Oh... yes, I suppose it is," she mused, taking a moment to realize what the younger Ravenclaw meant. She wasn't all that into astrology herself, but she was aware of the different astrological signs. "Do you think his birthday is in August and that's how he got his name?" That was the month for the Leo sign, right? It seemed as plausible a thought as any.

And Leo was back! "Aren't you such a good boy?" she cooed at the puppy as she gave his head and neck attentive pets. Celyn noticed the leap he had to make to get the stick. Of course she would throw it again for him. She had the best time playing fetch the stick with the dogs at her brother's place, so she considered herself quite the expert. Celyn picked up the stick and threw it swiftly across the clearing. "Go get it!"

Oh wait, were they supposed to be doing other things with their dogs? Or did bonding count, because she'd rather just play with him.

Getting pets from both the humans had Bess in pure doggy heaven. And while she’d been sad when the boy had lefted, the comfort from the girl was more than enough to uplift her spirits, as she leaned into her side, letting her tongue loll out. Mmmm, scratches!

And seemed these two were VERY willing to give her more treats, as the girl offered additional and Bess greedily gobbled them up before doing another lap around the children. Her tummy was quite satisfied, and now she was very eager for them to play with her. Though… she supposed if they DID want to offer more treats and pets she certainly wouldn’t refuse those either.

Commands, hm? Her head tilted at the human, curious as to if that was gibberish or an actual THING in their language.

The scratches had Cedar leaning heavily into the boy's hand, head drooping a little and his back leg starting to thump against the ground. Head scratches were the best. This kid was the BEST.

But... as soon as he thought that the boy was up and moving away from him. And while he didn't understand the command, he understood the tone, his ears flattening a little bit down. Why was the boy going AWAY!? DID HE NOT LIKE HIM ANYMORE?!

Puppy glanced down at the ground, before moving a paw slowly forward on the ground towards the boy, eyes pleading. If he was over there, Cedar wanted to be too. Head scratches!!!

Zeus was QUITE content, between his new human pillow and all the scratches and words of affirmation from the other. He ceased his kisses for the younger boy, turning his head to give a lick to the older too. He had enough love to give to multiple humans, okay! Could he just never ever move from this spot?

But… scratches were ceasing, and the elder was moving away from him, which caused head to lift as he looked at the boy curiously. He could hear his name, which caused another tilt of his head. But it was a whistle that really got his attention. He reluctantly got off the younger boy, before making slow movements to go over towards the elder.

He didn’t quite understand the command but… there was a hand lowered more on the boy’s right, and maybe that was one that would pet him. So to the right side he would go, coming alongside the human and nudging his hand gently with his head.

Did he do good?

GOOD BOY!? WAS HE THE GOOD BOY!? Leo gave a bark in response, lowering himself closer to the ground again and giving butt wags. Because the tail was clearly just not enough to show his enthusiasm for both praise and STICK. He enjoyed the pets, but was waiting for her to grab the stick so he could throw it. A quick lick to her hand petting her, a thank you but also a ‘hurry up’.

And then.. It was in her hand. And he was READY, OKAY. The stick went sailing and he was off again, chasing around after it. He faltered a little when he noticed another dog going after a different stick, the urge to CHASE getting strong, but there was another NEW stick off to the side and that was enough to focus him again. He grabbed it from the ground, turning and RACING back to the pair to drop it in front of them.

New stick. He was still a good boy, right?

—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

As much fun as he, dogs and students all seemed to be having, Cyril was sure their play time was coming to a close. Glancing at his wrist watch, he could see he was correct. He pushed himself up off the ground, a groan escaping, as the pup pranced off to probably beg someone for treats or play with another unclaimed pup. He dusted off his pants, before giving a loud clap once to get everyone’s attention. “Alright! It’s time to move on to our next activity and put your commands and bonding to the test.” A wave of his wand, and another opening in the fence formed connecting to the unopened shed across the clearing. “It’s time to see how our new friends do with Nogtails.” It was good to know how to clear the demons, both for informational sake and future necessity dependent upon their next careers.

“Now, the other shed does have nogtails within. Before we begin, I’d like to put everyone’s mind at ease. They may be called demons, but they are not looking to harm you. Nor will they be able to cast a curse on the grounds, as we do not have a family sow.” Meaning, they were perfectly safe. “I can assure you, whether these dogs have success in herding or not, breeds that excel in protection were specifically selected for your peace of mind.” At least three of these breeds would not let the humans or other dogs be in harms way. “That being said, herding is the goal. I will be releasing the nogtails into the clearing,” he expanded it ever so slightly so the kids had more space to avoid. “Your task here, is to give the command to your dogs of the day to usher the nogtails back into the shed.” And for anyone concerned if they were harming the nogtails, the answer was no. This was safe, if not frightful, and commonly done with animals of all sorts on farm settings.

“Instinct will primarily take over for the pups, but commands will be needed to keep them on track. Some might stick close to protect your or your partner, others might try to herd the other dogs, or just be disinterested. Think and take note on what motivated your puppy partner to listen to your instructions and utilize that. You’ll have the rest of class to work with your dog and see if you can herd.” He glanced at his watch again, noting that gave them around another 20 minutes. “If anyone has any questions, let me know. Good luck.”

And with that, another wave of his wand and the second shed door opened - allowing the pig like magical creatures to escape and scatter around the clearing.

OOC:

Activity 2 is up! Just as Professor Amstern instructed, the goal is to now putting your students bonding and observations working with the dogs to good use to get them to help herd the nogtails. Have your students give the instructions, and ** I will continue to post as the dogs regarding their success. We will be doing this until class ends on Tuesday, Feb. 15th.

Thanks all for sticking with us so far!

But nearly as soon as she’d settled that, the human had LEFT and she gave a small whine, before trotting closer to the girl. Would she stay with her? Would she pet her!?

Her dramatics were unneeded though, as the boy soon returned and she gave a wag in hello. DID HE HAVE TREATS!? She barked excitedly, making a couple of jumps up before happily gobbling down the offered food.

DELICIOUS. MORE!?

“Yes, we should definitely be friends, Bess!” Was it anything bad if he bribed her into friendship with those back scratches she seemed to like from earlier? Jude tried this tactic, giving Bess all the scratches. And of course she could keep him! The older Hufflepuff enjoyed watching Bess jump all around, getting excited by the treats. “Wonder what those taste like,” he mused to Desiree. Speaking of his little fairy princess friend…

Oh, right!

Introductions! Jude had forgotten all about that, such was his excitement of having Bess with them. “Gosh, that completely slipped my mind!”

Jude had the experience with giving animals basic commands but this was only with his and Keigh’s kitties. Needless to say that he wasn’t always firm or strict about them obeying him. “Okay, here goes nothing. Sit, Bess. Please?” It was important to be friendly to animals too. To emphasise his command that really wasn’t a command, Jude too sat on the ground. He eyed the doggo expectantly.

Lisa could FEEL the glare from her brother and she simply offered him a happy smile letting the glare roll off her back. Hehe. He was so easy to tease at times… and she loved it. :elmofire:

Anywho…..

She listened to the next set of instructions and observed her peers interact with the puppies. It took her a while to decide which puppy or puppies she wanted to play with but she spotted Daniel with a beautiful bouncy Samoyed.

Can I join you two?” she asked her friend first before looking at the puppy. “Hello! Hello!” she greeted, waiting for the puppy to approach before petting him gently and pouring all the love and attention into the interaction.

Yes… Lisa had plans to sneak this one back to her dorm room but she feared it wouldn’t work in her favour….so maybe she’d ask Professor Amstern to visit said puppies. But once again, she was distracted by the instructions. So they had to command the dogs to herd the nog tails back into the shed?

...Apparently it was a thing, as the boy used a slightly different tone with her and then… was perched on the ground? She tilted her head, blinking at him and licking her chops from remnants of dog biscuit. Was she supposed to lay in his lap? Jump on him? Did HE want affection now!?

Bess hadn’t the slightest idea, so she went with the easiest answer and just… moved her bum to sit on the ground like the boy was doing. Was this what he wanted?

Her eye was caught by weird pig like things running around a bit from the dogs. Did it want to play? Could she go play? She looked back at the boy expectantly.

Did she need to protect?

Lola was fairly disinterested while the older human talked, taking the time to clean herself and scratch behind her ear. She couldn’t understand most human anyways. But she COULD sense the change in mood for at least one of the girl’s, and she eyed human curiously before moving herself more centered and in front of them both.

Was it the weird creatures running around making them nervous? Lola crouched down and gave a couple of menacing growls, accompanied with a few barks. Should she chase? Would the girls feel better? She looked over at the elder waiting for the command.

CUTEST!? Tundra leaned his head back to howl in agreement, licking the girl’s face once. She was a keeper, recognizing the cute in him. He bet SHE wouldn’t lock him away from her!!! AND she was also offering him treats, which just sold him even more on this girl.

Tundra happily gobbled up the offered snack, before clamoring out of the girl’s lap and playfully crouching in front of her. He was attached, and he was ready to play if she was. If she had more of those treats he might have even been willing to talk, literally in his own way, to convince her to give him more of them.

Jordyn laughed when Tundra licked her face. That earned him more pats and rubs. Was it possible to love a puppy at first sight? The Hufflepuff thought so.

It was clear that Tundra wanted to play and Jordyn wanted to oblige him. However, it seemed that their bonding time was over. It was time for the next activity. “Tundra come”, Jordyn said, while patting her leg. Knowing that the puppy surely had no idea what she was saying, she decided to explain the task anyway. “I need you to help me. See those creatures over there? We’ve got to chase them so they go back into the shed.” Yeah, that would make a lot of sense to a puppy.

Jordyn got up and tried to encourage Tundra to start moving in the direction of the nogtails. This was going to be a challenge.

Violet wanted her to push gently on the dog's rump? Nope. Not Delilah. If Lola wanted a pat on the rump she'd have to look toward her older human friend for that.

Which was just what happened a second later.

Delilah watched as Violet tried the technique, which actually looked a lot different than Delilah had imagined it would look. Lola, however, didn't seem to like it one bit. Yeah...Delilah could kind of see why that might be. Her eyes flickered between Lola and Violet as she tried to figure out what to try next. "Maybe just a gentle pet on the back?" she offered. She knelt down beside her canine friend and began petting Lola's back.

Was it the weird creatures running around making them nervous? Lola crouched down and gave a couple of menacing growls, accompanied with a few barks. Should she chase? Would the girls feel better? She looked over at the elder waiting for the command.

Ugh.

Delilah did not really want to deal with the actual nogtails. Demon or not, they still seemed creepy to her. On that note, she literally had no idea what to do. All she'd ever done is pet Lola, and even then, the professor had moved on to another activity before Delilah had a chance to see if her technique had worked. She looked toward Violet, but unless she was getting the complete wrong impression, Violet didn't seem to know what to do either.

"I...I don't know what to do," Delilah said, slightly panicked. She fumbled around for some of her treats. Maybe Lola would jump into action for a treat or two? Delilah ran her hand gently down the dog's back. "Come on, girl! You can do it!" she encouraged. She stood back up on her feet and offered the dog the treat.

...Apparently it was a thing, as the boy used a slightly different tone with her and then… was perched on the ground? She tilted her head, blinking at him and licking her chops from remnants of dog biscuit. Was she supposed to lay in his lap? Jump on him? Did HE want affection now!?

Bess hadn’t the slightest idea, so she went with the easiest answer and just… moved her bum to sit on the ground like the boy was doing. Was this what he wanted?

Her eye was caught by weird pig like things running around a bit from the dogs. Did it want to play? Could she go play? She looked back at the boy expectantly.

Had he confused Bess? Jude hadn’t meant to! Usually, this was exactly the way he would be with Ned. Then again, Bess wasn’t Ned, and Jude recalled just how reluctant Ned was to follow his commands at the initial stages of their friendship. He watched Bess watch him as he wondered how best to convey his command to her. The Hufflepuff was just about to pat the ground beside him in another gesture of encouragement when Bess suddenly sat. “Good girl!” he said enthusiastically, and reached to pat her head.

“Desiree, I hope you can channel your inner Snow White because it seems I’m not really good at commanding.” Maybe Ned just humored him by following his leads. Jude followed Bess’ gaze to see all the nogtails on the loose. Was he afraid of them? No. Not when Amstern had been so reassuring about the students being safe. “Um… how do we do this?” Jude climbed to his feet and turned to Desiree. “Do we just say ‘chase the nogtails’? And offer a treat at the end of the activity as a reward?” Jude lifted his shoulders in a thoughtful shrug. “Want to give it a try?” Since he wasn’t the commanding type apparently, just a simple, carefree soul instead.

Desiree giggled as Bess let her tongue loll out. Was she going to lick her? Dogs could be so licky sometimes! Cats too, come to think of it. Her dad used to have a cat that would lick everything, but that was beside the point. They were working with dogs, not cats! More giggles followed as the cute little doggy gobbled up allllll the treats and did a lap around them. So cute!!!

Hearing Jude’s question, she shrugged. “I don’t know, but if she likes them, maybe they’re good.”

Aww, look at that little head tilt! “Does the world look better from that angle, Bess?” Desiree said. She tilted her head in the same direction to find out. So far things didn’t look much different, but maybe Bess saw something she didn’t.

Oh, so they were going to try giving commands now. Desiree blinked, her blue eyes darting from Bess to Jude. Wait, why was he sitting? The command was for Bess, not him! Was that how dog training was supposed to be done? Did you have to do the trick yourself to show the dog how? That wasn’t how her grand-père did it! He would just give the command and give his dog treats or pets when they did it right, but who knows? Maybe he was doing it wrong all this time!

Was Bess just as confused as she was? Desiree glanced expectantly at the little doggy, waiting to see what she’d do next. The thought crossed her mind that it might help Bess if she sat down like Jude, but she was not looking forward to sitting on the icky ground! Luckily, it wasn’t necessary, as Bess figured it out for herself. Desiree beamed. “Good girl, Bess!” she said, joining Jude in giving her head pats. “Oh, you’re such a smart doggy!”

She reluctantly stopped petting Bess and looked up as Amstern started speaking. Hearing that the nogtails couldn’t curse anyone put her mind a little more at ease, but she still didn’t think she wanted to encounter one! She shuddered slightly, taking an automatic step back as the scary pig-things appeared. Part of her wanted to hide behind Jude again, but there was a job to do.

Desiree smiled at the Snow White reference. “I can try,” she replied. Matter of fact, she’d been trying to channel her inner Snow White all along! She thought for a minute. “I think treats are a good idea, but that command might be too long for her. Amstern said the dogs only know basic commands…” An idea occurred to her. “Maybe if we tell her to go and point her in the right direction, she’ll catch on.” It was worth a try anyway!

“Okay, Bess. Go!” she said, looking at the doggy once more. She pointed toward the nearest nogtail and took a small cautious step in that direction. Would Jude follow her? She didn’t want to get closer to it all by herself!

"Or July," Milo said to Celyn, eyes on Leo the Fire Demon as he capered away and returned with the stick. But he didn't know, he couldn't have even guessed when their fire demon had been born, so he left his response a non-committal one.

He reached forwards to inexpertly scritch at the puppy's ears. "I do that sometimes," Milo said, neglecting to specify that he meant the abandonment of one stick for another, except in a different context. "It makes Mercer's head spin."

According to Mr Amstern, these were not the demons in question, but Leo would always be a Fire Demon to Milo, who pushed himself to his feet and immediately became more conscious of the frigid air. Leo, who was what Milo recognised as a herding dog, might be able do the job on his own much better than if Milo tried to direct him. Celyn seemed the type of person who could have more success. But what it really was, was that Milo didn't really want to try, and seemed to believe all instructions given in a lesson were optional; he wordlessly handed the stick and the canine authority to Celyn, and shivered.

"Zeus is the smartest and best..." Mercer wiped dog spit off his face and sat up while Cooper easily got Zeus to 'come'. So he could sit and he could... flop on people like a fish, and he could come. Those were good tricks, but were they useful at all in herding nogtails?

Mercer's attention was totally drawn in by the release of the nogtails, sort of horrified and fascinated by the proportions of their little piggy bodies. They were interesting, alright, and it seemed a shame to send the dogs to terrorize them. Or was it like, the dogs knew their jobs and the nogtails knew theirs, and no one was scared?

Time to do the herding. Mercer hopped to his feet and raced toward the nogtails. "Come, Zeus. Get the piglets back into the barn."

sweetpinkpixie 02-16-2022 08:24 AM

sheeeeeesh...SS finally loaded!

Truth be told, Cooper had half expected Zeus to need to shadow Mercer in order to complete the command...so he was pleased when the dog followed the request with ease. "Good boy, Zeus," Cooper offered in a cutesy voice yet again and, as the pup so desired, a good hearty scratch behind the ears. "Such a good boy!"

And then it was off to the races, literally, with Mercer taking off towards the nogtails that the professor has just unleashed. The seventh year looked down at their furry white companion and, honestly, felt bad for the nogtails...who surely had no idea what was coming to them. This was going to be a blast and Cooper's lips spread into a wide smile.

"You heard him, come on then Zeus," he chuckled before giving a bit of a whistle and taking off at a job after his little brother. However, he soon veered off towards the barn as a visual indicator for Zeus. "Mercer, he likes to shadow you so ... try and be his fellow Great Pyrenees."

Come was one of the few things he did know from previous trainers, besides he needed very little convincing to STICK to this human like glue. As for chasing the weird things running around? A much harder task to request. That meant LEAVING. And who would PROTECT!?!?

So while pup moved to her side, he placed himself half behind and GROWLED at the things running around - which were all too content to avoid him like the plague.

TAKE THAT PIGGIES.

So when one of the weird other creatures cut a little close, she was off and in action, running after it and chasing it all the way into the shed it had come from. She gave one last victorious bark at it after it had run in, before trotting herself back to the girls and looking around for anything else she’d need to protect from.

She’d certainly take that offered treat now.

As humans talked back and forth, Bess just alternated between observing them and watching the weird things running around. She could see other puppies following after them, and everything in her body said to go too but… these humans were giving her treats and pats. How could she give that UP?! So she leaned against the boy while he patted her head and she kept her bum on the ground, looking at the girl too whenever she heard her own name mentioned.

She could feel from their energy that they weren’t THAT anxious about the black creatures, which made her all the more anxious to leave their sides and go RUN. But she was waiting. She was a good girl.

Which.. They must have known she was waiting, as the girl called her name and pointed towards the pig like things giving her the easy command - ‘go’. That was one she knew.

And she didn’t need to be told twice. Off like a rocket, Bess went around chasing the weird things. Her methods were random, and she had a hard time sticking to one, but she did eventually get one into the shed.

He WAS a good boy, thank you both for noticing. Zeus gave a happy bark at both the boys, his back leg thumping against the ground when he was rewarded with head scratches by the older of the two boys.

But then there was an addition to the gathering in the clearing, weird things that felt like FARM, and his interest was immediately piqued. Even MORE so when both his humans for the day took off towards the things, which left the puppy jumping up to follow - especially when one called his name, like an invitation.

Instinct soon took over, and he started chasing after the creatures with the spindly legs, running them this way and that and slowly leading them back towards the open shed across the clearing. One in!

__________________________________________________ _______________

[color=#4B5445]Cyril watched the students and the unclaimed dogs chasing the nogtails around the clearing; the group of demons unleashed slowly dwindling as they were chased into the shed one by one. He noted varying levels of success among the students, as somes dogs had been successful, some at least were ready to attempt, and others at least had completed the bonding. Taking a glance at his watch, the man noted they were already out of time so he gave a loud clap of his hands to get the attention of the students. “Alright guys, that’s about all the time we have for today.” He should have managed better earlier so they had more time to herd, but he’d gotten just as distracted as the students by the puppies. “Our little four legged friends will be here for the remainder of the week, so feel free to come visit them in the barns.” He was sure they’d all appreciate the company.

“For your homework, please refer to your textbooks about more creatures in the demon category and write a short essay about your favorite explaining the benefits and negatives the creature can have.” There was always pros and cons, in his book. “Thank you for attending today’s lesson, I appreciate your participation! Class dismissed.” And with that, he let the dogs get the remainder of the nogtails chased into the shed and locked that up.

For the puppies, he’d let the kids say good bye and then usher them into the barn where they’d have a little more space.

OOC: That’s a wrap! Thanks for coming folks!! I hope you all had as much fun as I did! I’ll leave the thread open until tomorrow for everyone who wants to post their kiddos leaving.
