Default Charms Lesson: Healing Spells

Early March you find yourself headed to your Charms lesson after lunch to find the windows cracked open slightly to let in some fresh air. Your Professor is seated criss-crossed atop her teacher's desk casually flipping through the latest copy of Healers Monthly Digest, whilst looking up to greet you and take your seats.

In the front corner of the room there's a large box, but don't bother trying to ask Professor Mancini what's in there as you should be well aware by now that she will not disclose such information until the time is right. Also, don't bother trying to peek inside unless you wish for a tattoo of an unpleasant name on your forehead.

ooc: Hiii everyone!!! Even though this our first (and only) charms lesson, IC your characters should know Professor Mancini well. Also, don't forget to read the rules if you haven't yet.

Lesson Progression
* Q1: Common Healing and Charms Misconceptions
* Mini Activity: Practicing incantation/Wand movements
* Main Activity: Baby Doll Injury Simulators
* Q2: when you might find use for these charms

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Aria let her quill-wand continue the movement. Or rather, her hand continued the up-down movement idly. Had she dozed off with her eyes open, which happened to be string off into the distance? Almost. If it hadn’t been for her quill falling out of her grasp, Aria just might have. The sudden absence of the quill between her fingers made her jerk out of her trance. Quickly, the quill was scooped up again with her pretending that she just didn’t zone out.

“Right! Next spell!’’ Ms. McLeod said to herself, nodding her head as though she hadn’t just zoned out. The next spell was the Wound Healing Spell which sounded SO complicated. “VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour. VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour.” Trace the wand over the wound as the movement? That was easy. Aria casually moved the quill around in random patterns.

There. Practice was all done.

Delilah nodded, but she was still standing by her belief that if she was ever in any really danger, she hoped their was somebody other than a student around. A student with a wand was better than nobody at all, though. Or...a student who'd practiced the charm with their finger, in this case...

So she guessed she was considered one of the younger students. She had a few more years to go with that prestigious title. She started with the incantations. "eh-PIS-kee. eh-PIS-kee," she said, trying to mirror the professor's words. "Episkey." Incantations were always easy. Unless the professor wanted something like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, most incantation were a no-brainer.

"ah-nap-nee-oh. ah-nap-nee-oh," she continued. "Anapneo!" Alright, so was she okay to start waving around her wand now? Or...her finger?

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

"F E R U L A. Fe- Fer- oooh- la. No, fer-rool-lah, fer-rool-lah, ferula. Ferula." Maybe one day she'd be able to do nonverbal healing charms. Ooh. She traced her finger down, up, and down again like it was a wand bandaging her right arm. Then she traced it with her other hand for good measure(what if she hurt her wand arm?)

Vulnera Sanentur sounded like a very cool spell. Ash had to remind herself that magic couldn't fix everything. "V U L N E R A S A N E N T U R. VUL-ner-ah... um, VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour. Vulnera Sanentur. Vulnera sanentur. Vulnera Sanentur." That was a lot of syllables... Ash was glad she knew some of the latin roots. She traced imaginary wounds with her fingers, visualizing the healing. She'd seen the spell used before, so it definitely helped with that. Ash was pretty good at visualization anyway. She spent a couple moments imagining what the spells would look like and refining the movements.

That hadn't been entirely how Milo had intended his answer, but as a part-time riddle-speaker he was fairly content with the fact that the things he said were up for interpretation - unless, of course, there were things he really did want to communicate, but couldn't. In the spirit of not elaborating, he kept quiet.

Until, at least, the practicing bit. Because Milo knew how to point his wand and make circular motions, and because they weren't even practicing with wands anyway, he just said the incantations. "Episkey." Easy. "Ah-nap-nee-oh." Also easy. "Episkey. Anapneo. Episkeyanapneo. Episkanapno. Episkano. Epineo. Spekaneo. Ssssspeeeak." The focus of the activity was getting away from him, as was his focus altogether, tenuously held as it was most days. On the other hand, perhaps any one of these words had the potential to be attached to a new spell, or something even more important. "Epiksnees."

Delilah still thought it was super childish to be using her finger as a wand, but she guessed she was going to do it anyway. Did she even have a choice? Something told her the professor wouldn't be too happy with her if she actually went through with the charm.

To add insult to injury (no pun intended), both wand motion were extremely basic. Delilah pointed her finger forward. That was it. Just a point forward. At least the second charm had a little more to it. Delilah moved her finger in a circular motion around a pretend injury. Alright. She thought she had it all down pat now.

"Anapneo!" she said again. "Episkey!" Yep. Definitely had it all down pat. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all to have a student come to her aid if she was ever injured.

"Fer-rool-lah...Fer-rool-lah... Violet had been murmuring Ferula and making the repetitive down and up and down movements so many times that she felt she was almost entering a trance state. The buzz of all the other students, each chanting a different charm, in the background didn't help matters, either. Violet shook herself slightly and leaned back, folding her hands in front of her and awaiting the next step (because she had definitely had enough practice for now).

Though Kinsay wasn't super interested in the topic of healing magic, she did want to learn the spells so that she could show Phoebe. Fi was going to be a healer one day. The best healer. No offense, Professor Macini. Kins was sure she was great too. Probably. They wouldn't let a bad Healer at Hogwarts after all the terrible things that happened here year after year.

But enough about that. She had spells to practice. Quietly, she said each cantation under her breath a few times. Just to get used to them. Fer-rool-lah. Fer-rool-lah. Fer-rool-lah. Fer-rool-lah. And then again with the second. VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour. VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour. VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour. VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour. VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour. VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour. While she didn't thinking practicing wand movements was ever entirely necessary, she did that as well, using her quill as a wand.

Down, up, down for the bandaging charm. The motion was almost hypnotic. And she wasn't paying as much attention to it as she ought to be.

Professor Mancini knew that some of them might think it ridiculous to just use your finger to practice the wand motions, but honestly, she was always one to err on the side of caution. Also, if the younger students (looking at you Daniel), really felt they could do more advanced charms, they were welcome to come chat with her about it. She was definitely open to third years attempting more complex charms if they talked to her, or even fifth years doing the easier spells.... First, second, sixth and seventh years were stuck though !!

She surveyed them approvingly as they seemed okay in their pronunciations ... only, what ... was Milo combining the two spells??! She glanced over at him and was about to scold him when she reconsidered. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing ... he was just trying to think outside the box, wasn't he? Because that's what Ravenclaws did? "Mr Evans, they're two different spells... eh-PIS-kee and ah-nap-nee-oh," She said simply as a clear reminder. Perhaps a lesson on charm inventing though might be in order for the future. Not today though. But enough of this practicing because this was boring and likely to put some of them to sleep if they just practiced their enunciations too long.

"So inside this box, there's some fake baby dolls with injury simulators. Your task will be to play doctor and heal the babies using the spells we've just practiced pronouncing. They'll have ailments from the sniffles or runny noses, to broken arms or legs. I'll place one of the baby dolls on your desks and you may begin."

ooc: soooo sorryyy for the delay !! work and then allergies which mimicked cold symptoms decided to drain my energy to post, sooo apologies and thank you for your patience!!! <3 AnYwAy !!! MAIN ACTIVITY TIME. Professor Mancini walked around placing a baby doll on your desk at random (but appropriately suited for the two healing charms that your character's grade level is working on). Your job is to first take note of WHAT'S WRONG with the baby doll and to use the spell to heal them. If the correct spell is used, they'll magically heal. You may also work with a partner if you chooooooseeee ... and uh, hope this all makes sense BUT if not, DM/VM me, or ask IC here ... okay, thanks. Have fun !! Take as many or few posts as you feel you need.

Was it just her or was there a weird vibe in this class? Maybe it was just her. But Celyn couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Maybe she was just having an off day. Feeling scattered for the hundredth time this week, the seventh year tried to focus on today's Charms topic.

She was fairly familiar with at least a few healing charms. They were necessary when working with rescue creatures as she often helped out at her brother's sanctuary. But she was careful to use only the ones she knew well as she was not a proper healer, for example the bandaging charm. She did not feel necessary to practice that one in class today as she thought she was adept at that one, but the wound healing charm held a little more appeal.

It was a little weird just using her finger in place of her wand, but she understood the reason why. Her forearm was the easiest place to pretend she had a wound and the seventh year traced a line over her arm as she repeatedly whispered, "VUL-ner-ah sah-NEN-tour."

Celyn was in the middle of that practice when the professor stopped at her desk and gave her a baby doll. "Oh thank you, Professor," she replied with a smile as she took the doll from her and assessed it. She reminded her of Bria, or what Bria probably looked like shortly after she was born. She missed so many of those months when they had no contact with the outside world and she had gotten so big when she finally did meet her. And now she was getting sad... but the doll was crying now and it helped bring Celyn back to the present and focus a little better.

She gently bounced the baby in her arms as she looked her over. Celyn didn't see anything immediately that looked like a wound, so maybe... broken bone? They weren't always as visible. She gently ran her fingers over the doll's limbs, soon finding one of the arms was not at a natural angle. So, broken arm then.

or the record, Aria did not think it was silly to use fingers for practice. Healing Charms could be complicated and no one wanted to accidentally remove anyone’s bones, right? Aria certainly did not want to. OOOH! Dolls! The perfect subjects to practise on! The Slytherin surveyed the doll when it was placed on her desk.

The doll’s wounds jumped right out at Aria. “Poor baby,’’ she crooned softly. “However did you get those cuts? I bet they sting.’’ Speaking of which… she now had a question. “Professorrr!’’ Her fingers wiggled in the air. “In real scenarios, is it necessary to use certain potions to clean out the wounds before we mend wounds? Or does the Charm naturally do this?”

Delilah diverted her attention to both the professor and the boxes. Babies...with injuries? Sounded terrible to look at. At least that'd be motivation for her to start healing things. She'd been super hesitant about students using healing charms before, but this might change her mind.

Those were the thoughts running through Delilah's mind as the professor placed a baby doll in front of the first year. Delilah winced as she looked down at the doll A broken leg? REALLY? It was hard to look at a baby with such an injury. Then to add insult to injury, the poor baby was sniffling.

She decided to try and cure the broken leg first, because let's face it--a baby with a broken leg was just awful. She would deal with the sniffling later. She'd console the baby and maybe even give it a little hug, but it was fake, so no. She pointed her wand toward the leg and made a circular motion around it. "Episkey!" she said. It literally happened within seconds. The snapping back into place was like a blur, but the leg was literally healed. As a first year, she wouldn't normally expect to get it right so fast, but they had just done a lot of practice.

At first, Cooper found this whole activity to be right within his wheelhouse. With three younger siblings, one of them Mercer, to help look after...he had plenty of experience patching up boo boo's and the like. However, when the professor went on to describe broken arms and legs...well...it had his stomach twisting in the sort of way that made him wish he had not had such a hearty meal earlier in the day. He could handle all this sort of thing with creature, but when the line crossed over to mending people...well...he just hoped the doll in his care was one with minor discomforts...

And speaking of discomfort, Celyn was looking a little worse for wear at the moment. Maybe she was thinking about Briallen? Or...where his own thoughts had gone...the healing areas during the battle at Hogwarts? In any case, Cooper was moving himself over closer to her (which his own baby doll cradled in his arms with extra attention being given to supporting the neck - old habit) just as she completed her examination of her baby doll which...er...was...yeah...arms were not meant to bend that way.

"Hey...want me to help hold your baby steady while you fix that?" he asked while shifting his baby doll into just one of his arms. He did not want to outright ask if she was okay (she was clearly not entirely) and instead went with providing a solution. Something to do and accomplish in the situation. His own baby doll was wailing a bit, one hand more swollen than the other - particularly in the finger region.

Perhaps they could have used this spell knowledge a few years ago, but there wasn't anything that Le could do about that. Although some of the tragedies that had occurred were nothing that a healing spell could fix, sadly. She quietly observed Delilah fixing the baby doll's broken limb, nodding in approval. The nice thing about practicing on baby dolls is that they were real enough to simulate the injury, but fake enough to know that they weren't ... real humans.

But the way Celyn was bouncing the baby had Le almost forgetting for a moment that they were fake. And Cooper offering to assist her was sweet and definitely part of the exercise of 'playing healer'. Her attention was pulled by a young girl asking her something...

She looked over at Aria, worried first that maybe something had gone super awry, but alas the girl just had a question. "Ah... that's a good question." She noted. "With muggle healing, you may have witnessed cleaning everything and while in magical healing we try to keep a similar sterile environment, fortunately we don't have to be as neurotic about it. So to answer the question, in a real scenario you'll definitely want to make sure there's nothing obstructing the wound, but otherwise the charm is safe to use."

"While you're assessing and playing healer, I'd like to just dial it back a minute and discuss when you might find use these spells. Just one of the spells and one use is okay. We still have a little time to continue practicing."

ooc: HI! So another question to discuss when to use these... could be specific or generic as your character likes. ALSO, still time to practice the main activity, but the lesson will be closing Tuesday afternoon (probably around 3-4pm CST).

That made sense. Since they were magically fixing the wound, it helped that that spell would do more than mending. “Got it! Thanks, professor!” So, she just had to make sure nothing was blocking the baby’s wound. She examined the deeper of the gashes, which happened to be on a rather thicc leg. There seemed to be nothing there. “Alrightey, little one! Let me patch you up. It’ll be over in a second, at least for this wound.” Aria held her wand to one end of the gash. “Vulnera Sanentur!’’ She began moving her wand over the wound.

“See? Told you I’d get it fixed!’’ Most Charms were easy enough for her to learn so having this particular one work on the first try came as no surprise. But now, she could brainstorm Mancini’s question. Hand up again, and with fingers wiggling, the Slytherin volunteered, “Episkey can be useful should a bludger break someone’s nose.”

Violet was not enthused about practising magic on a baby doll (this was worse than using a finger for a wand). Violet had never been a baby-doll person, even in her childhood, and she certainly had no use for them now. She noted some classmates crooning and rocking the things like they were real, which they most definitely were not.

Looking down at her doll, Violet saw a number of injuries, which on closer examination looked like shallow scrapes. These didn't seem the kind of deep wounds one used Vulnera Sanentur for, so she opted to use the bandaging charm. She first pointed her wand at the desk and tried the charm, Ferulah, to see if she could get some loose bandage, which actually seemed to work (even if it produced a bit of a tangle of bandages and much more than she needed). She used Aguamenti to moisten one of the ends and gently sponged off all the scrapes she could see, then pointed her wand at the doll's 'injured' leg and cast Ferulah!, and was pleased to see a nice, neat bandage wrap itself around the affected area. There, that looked like it would do it!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

While her classmates volunteered their answers, Aria continued to survey her doll. There were two minor cuts and she figured that maybe bandaging would work. Wouldn’t it be better to simply use the Wound Healing Charm though? Since this wasn’t an actual medical situation, and she wasn’t a real Healer, Aria decided that she’d use the Bandaging Charm for practise’s sake.

This time around, however, the Slytherin took more time to get the spell going. The first three tries were duds, the fourth had lengths of bandages shooting out of her wand but missed the doll completely. It was only on the fifth attempt that she succeeded. “Ferula!” The wound was bandaged, yes, but it was done clumsily. Clearly Aria needed to do more practise. The second wound was bandaged a lot neater but still not to her satisfaction. Aside from that, she seemed to be getting there with this charm.

Now that she was satisfied with her bandaging work, Violet volunteered an answer to the discussion. "Vulnera Sanentur would be useful if someone was badly injured in a situation where you couldn't get them to a Healer right away. Well, most of the charms we learned today would, for that matter."

When Aria had no further questions, Professor Mancini took to observing the remaining dolls in the box. There were ones with different injuries in there and she could always magically induce some more fake injuries if they wanted more practice.

As far as the question she had asked, she nodded at Aria. "Yes, or not even a bludger since quidditch injuries can be quite severe sometimes and have more to it than just a broken nose." She wasn't sure that made sense, but well for the quidditch players in the room, it probably did.

She noticed Violet's lack of enthusiasm, but honestly she hoped that she would understand that practicing on 'dolls/dummies' was one of the safer ways to practice charms. At least for this particular lesson. She was pleased however, to see her successful charm-work. "Yes, all the charms today would definitely be useful if there wasn't a trained healer around as a way to temporarily bandage someone up. They're not terribly complicated healing charms and may just save a life. Good."

Would you look at that though? "Anyway, thank you all for your efforts today, but it seems we're out of time. If you'd like to continue practicing these spells or would at a later time, the dolls will be available in the charms practice room."
