If it is your life's ambition to explore every nook and cranny of the school, then odds are you have made the long walk up one of the tallest towers of the castle and stumbled upon a door with no knob. On it is just a simple bronze eagle knocker. This may be a disappointment to some because all of that climbing had been for nothing. Ravenclaws, however, know that this door is very special because behind it is their very airy common room.
Anyone can, of course, approach the knocker and try to get in. After all, to get by you only need to provide an answer to one of its riddles. This will only cause more disappointment to the overconfident non-Ravenclaws who think they can break into the common room at any time. The riddles that the knocker is awaiting answers for aren't exactly easy. Those belonging in the house of Rowena Ravenclaw should be able to answer with ease. Regardless of who answers, if the answer is incorrect the door will not open and you'll be left standing outside until someone comes along with the right answer.
Well... this was certainly embarrassing. His mind was far too distracted as of late, and he'd somehow managed to give an incorrect response to the riddle for his common room. Most unfortunate, considering he was then so flustered there was no way to come up with the correct, until eventually he just managed to give up and plop himself down beside the door and pulling his books out and into his lap.
Evan's intent was to study until someone came along and he could slip in behind them, and yet he found he was more focused on the fact how obvious it was why he was sitting on the floor outside. Was there a way to brush it off? He loathed the idea of looking incompetent, particularly to the younger years. Maybe he could say he was just studying outside like a good Samaritan, in case anyone else got locked out?

As if anyone would believe that.
It was late afternoon and Arlo had finished his lessons for the day. Luckily his last lesson had been in the Astronomy tower and it didn’t take long for him to travel back to the Common Room where he was hoping to settle in for the night with a comic book and maybe a little bit of his homework. He felt sorry for the Slytherin kids down in the dungeons who had to traverse a million steps to get to their beds. But then again it was equally annoying having to walk all the way up after a decent meal in the Great Hall. He wouldn’t say he was unfit at all but he did often get a stitch from sprinting up the staircases after stuffing his face with food at dinner. Hadn’t they ever heard of elevators?!
Walking along the corridor he stopped just by the bronze knocker when he saw a boy, maybe a little older than he was slumped against the wall seemingly pretending to be studying or something.
Ha.
He might’ve been the new kid around here but Arlo was more than aware that people sitting around in the corridor outside the Ravenclaw Common Room meant that they were clearly stumped by today’s riddle. “Is it a tricky one today?” he grinned at the boy knowingly.

It would be so much more useful if instead of worrying how silly he was going to look, he could simply just focus on the pages in front of him and the information he was meant to be absorbing. He was pretty far ahead of his study schedule for the term, but how he loathed down time and doing nothing.
And while he felt like he was waiting an eternity, it honestly was only 5 minutes or so before he could hear foot steps coming down the corridor. Evan tried to look up, to appear as nonchalant as possible, but the facial expression on the other claw was proof enough he'd already been caught. He made the split decision to be... un-Evan, and hopefully more like new Evan and not groan and fold into himself. Instead, he offered a half small in return, sheepish is nature. "It's probably simple. I just got flustered."
Is it just you, or has the Ravenclaw Common Room entrance seemed a little sluggish recently, perhaps taking a few seconds longer than usual to respond to the riddle answer it's been given?
No. Not just you. All at once, the bronze knocker has become unquestionably unreliable. At times, it works fine, perfect working order, while at other times it will leave you stuck outside the common room for ten or fifteen minutes at a time before suddenly springing into action. Occasionally, it will ask its riddle in gibberish; good luck solving that one. Whatever enchantments maintain the entrance are undeniably on the blink.
If you're lucky, someone might just happen to force the door open from the inside, where a password isn't needed, otherwise you'll just have to be patient.
Ash was having a frustrating day. She wanted to go to her dorm and lie there. Forever, or at least until all the mean people disappeared. Or until she got bored and started painting. But this RIDICULOUS KNOCKER. Ugh.
She had been trying for 13 minutes to get the door open. ALL THE QUESTIONS WERE NONSENSICAL. Or the door didn't work at all! Ash hated this place. Also, she hated everything. She just wanted to lie in bed with her cat(who was unfortunately on the other side of the door). And it was. not. working.
On the 'verge' of tears(ok she was already in tears and looked a mess), she gave up and sat there, hoping somebody else would open it for her.
Of course he'd managed to forget one of his texts in the dorm, which meant he'd had to sprint back up the stairs in order to try to get it for the next study session. Well, sprint when there was no one to see him do so, given he was not looking to get into any sort of trouble. Reaching the seventh floor and heading towards the Bronze Knocker, Evan slowed his steps and worked on controlling his breathing when he noticed a figure sitting by the entrance but... not going in. Was someone waiting for a Ravenclaw? Or perhaps he was not the only person who forgot a password this term?
As he neared, he noticed it was Ash which calmed him slightly, but then as he got even CLOSER he noticed the current state of Ash and went to concern instead. And once more pace quickened. "Ash? Everything okay?" If she forgot the password, it wasn't THAT big of a deal. And he could help and no one would need to know!
Except... when he turned towards the door the riddle was just a bunch of gibberish. "Um. What?"

Ash wiped her tears on her sleeve as Evan approached so that he wouldn't see them(it didn't work). She pulled her knees to her chest and rested her chin on them. "I-" (sniffle) "I- I'm having an awful day and the knocker won't work and I want to lie in bed with my cat but I can't b-" (shaky breath) "because of the stupid door." It wasn't working for him either??? She understood why a door would hate her, but... Evan??? Evan was a very worthy Ravenclaw. Why wouldn't the door open for him?
She slowly got to her feet and tried to collect herself. "What................ what do you think is wrong with it?" She could do this. They could think rationally(or irrationally, as the case may be) together. She could keep it together so that nobody would see her sobbing in the corridor. Hopefully. "We could blow up the door. Or... no, that's a bad idea with all the cracks. We could, um, cry get the... the headmaster. K..... Kazmi would know what to do, even if he doesn't know what's wrong..." She respected him a lot. And he probably wouldn't yell at her if she started crying. So.

Concerned eyes roamed from the door to Ash and back to the door again. Their animals WERE all on the other side of the door. What if they couldn't get back in at all in order to take care of them!? He wanted to focus too on the awful day, but this didn't seem the best time to try to be comforting. Maybe once they could get back into the commons. "I don't know what's wrong with it...." The riddle didn't make sense. Could they just use old answers?
Once she got to her feet, Evan did give small pause to give Ash a quick one armed hug - upset to see his friend likewise so upset. "I'm not sure... There has been some weird foundation issues with the castle. Maybe there was one in the common room and it made a bookshelf fall in front of the door?" No, because that didn't explain at all why the door was asking gibberish. "The magic isn't gone at least it's just.... malfunctioning. Is that something magic can do?" It was in these moments where he realized how much he just didn't understand about the world he now lived in. It frustrated him. "Either Headmaster Kazmi or Professor Carton, as our head of house. Maybe we should start with him since he should be aware?" It might also be something Carton could fix before they needed to bother Kazmi, since he was probably dealing with the other odd foundational issues.

Ash almost started crying again when Evan hugged her. Because she was pretty sure he didn't even like hugs but he was trying to make her feel better and AHHHHH. He was her best friend and she would do anything for him, ok?
Ash spoke softly, gently hugging Evan back before letting go. "Of course magic can malfunction." Wands malfunctioned, spells malfunctioned, enchanted objects malfunctioned... sometimes the magic inside of someone got messed up. "There are a lot of ways for things to go wrong." Ash, being Ash, was inclined to believe that tampering or foul play was involved. But maybe that was just her? "Maybe the enchantments are just old and going haywire... or maybe someone is breaking things on purpose?" She touched to door. "Please let me in." It was worth a shot.
"We should ask BOTH of them. Because Carton is in charge of the Ravenclaws, and Kazmi is in charge of everywhere. I wanna know what they are doing to protect us. We can ask Carton first." She trusted them, of course, but she liked (repeated) reassurance. And that wasn't out of line, since, um, the castle kept breaking and trying to kill them. And because, um, Hogwarts had never been a safe place. just pointing out the facts.

Generally hugs were not Evan's favorite thing, but he didn't mind it so much when he was closer to a person. Close friends and his family were the exceptions to the rule, Ash included. Besides, he knew how much she DID like hugs and if that could comfort her when she was upset, he would absolutely do that.
"Fair point." Spells were the most common, as they backfired a lot. He'd been lucky enough to never experience a large misfire, it was usually just.. his magic didn't work or was weak, but he'd certainly seen it enough. Besides, even here at Hogwarts hadn't they seen magic malfunction before? Or... at least heard about it, in the case of that term where his brother just... disappeared. "Who would have had access to interfere? Thankfully it's not like Board of Governors was invited here this year.." bless Kazmi for that, "so tampering seems unlikely... unless... wasn't it mentioned at the beginning of term there'd been cursebreakers cleaning up after the vine fiasco? Could maybe one of them just.. messed something up with the entrance?" He wasn't jumping to intentional, though... if it had been it didn't seem worse than just a prank.
Talking to both seemed the best plan, so at her suggestion he found himself nodding in agreement. "Let's go to Professor Carton's office then. Doesn't seem like we'll be getting anywhere with the door anyways..." but maybe their Head of House could help them get in quickly so Ash could cuddle her cat. "Do you want to go together? Or should one of us stay here?"
