| | Professor Rae opened the door to her classroom and went first to the window. The weather was wet, dark, and gloomy, and she was glad they were spending the day inside, instead of wasting a beautiful afternoon like the previous class period. She pulled the drapes closed across the window, shutting out the dark sky, before turning and lighting all the candles in the room with a wave of her wand. They winked cheerily, but it was still a bit gloomy.
With another wave, the professor moved all the desks to the back of the room and replaced those seats with squishy poofs and cushions reminiscent of her days in Professor Trelawney's classroom. At last, she laughed to herself, she had found a real use from those long hours. She turned to her desk and whisked it clean of the cluttered paperwork before perching on top of it to wait for her students. |

So if you use it, (Morsmordre, not Imperio) everyone knows you're a Death Eater anyways, so you get sent to Azkaban.

| Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee Professor Rae decided to deal with the Morsmordre question first. "Aph is correct. The spell itself isn't what would send you to Azkaban, its the fact that only Death Eaters know how to perform it. If you are caught making the sign... you'd have some pretty fancy explaining to do. There are other things that will get you sent to Azkaban, or at least invite a visit to the Wizengamot. If you perform magic in front of a Muggle, random and hurtful cursing or hexing of any variety, and dueling in a public place are all punishable, but only using the Unforgivables is automatic and immediate life-sentencing. There are people for whom it is okay, as we said in a previous lesson. Some Aurors choose to use the Unforgivables, and they are legally permitted to do so."
"Now, what is the incantation for the Imperious Curse?"

"But professor, aren't there a few people such as the dark lord, that anyone would be permitted to use the avada Kadavera curse on? After all, there is no reason for someone to question him. We all know who he's killed, what he's done."

Yeah, if you use the Avada Kedavra curse on someone evil such as Voldemort, I think you won't go to Azkaban, you've helped the rest of the world, and subtracted the amount of Death Eaters by one!

Nods "That's what I was thinking....It's the same way in the muggle world....there are a few people who anyone is permitted to kill, without punishment. I was thinking it would be the same in the magical world. You probably wouldn't be punished for using the Curciatric curse on him either...but you would't be arround long enough to be punished anyway..so it would be pointless."

"I would say using the Killing Curse against someone such as Voldemortist, you MIGHT be justified, but this law is in effect to keep common people from trying to determine who does and who does not deserve to be Avada'd at their discretion. There are SO many alternative ways of taking control in a dangerous situation. Five points if you can name a spell that would assist in such a situation."

I agree. But using Imperio on Lord Voldemort would be useless, as he would be resistant to the spell. Crucio may not have much effect either.

| "The incanation is imperio, and professor, what would be the sentence for using the 'death' curse on Voldemort? Meaning that yes, your killing a death eater, but should someone be running around trying to kill someone? Yes he is the most wanted wizard criminal, but who knows. Also you would need a very strong desire to want to kill him because, I remember someone saying that you could just say the incantation, but hardly anything would happen, just becuase you really didn't mean it".

"Well I'm only a third year...so i lack any name for a spell that would help..but I'd say that a spell that would draw someone elses attention would probably be a good thing. That way you wouldn't have to face it alone. You could probably get the help of another witch or wizard."

But yeah...you would have to really want to kill him for it to work. He's really powerful anyway, it would take an extremely strong will for it to work."

| "Well, there is immobulus, but this is probably a very basic spell, I don't know how well this would work against such a powerful wizard, how about incarcerous to wrap someone like Voldemort, once again this is a more basic spell, and might not work against such a powerful wizard but in other cases this could be very helpful. There is also petrificus totalus, to freeze someone."

Yeah, perhaps. But Lord Voldemort would kill you anyway, before you had a chance to defend yourself, probably. You might get one or two spells out and that's it, you'd probably either get killed or tortured to insanity like the Longbottoms, it's hard to decide which I would prefer. But if that was the case, and I knew about the prophecy, you'd be crazy to even bother going after Voldie.

Thinks for a moment. "Or a disarming charm would be really helpful."

Or perhaps Locomotor Mortis, but they can still use their arms then, so that wouldn't be much use.
I suppose the Shield Charm may be OK, but not if you are dealing with Avada Kedavra and the like. A disarming charm may be handy too.

"The first thought that really comes to mind when talking about this kind of situation, I think of getting myself out of there. But then i realise I wouldn't want to let whoever was attacking me get away. The next theory that everyone seems to have gotten to is get their wand away, or get them in a situation where they can't use magic. You'll probably want to get help too...as I said before...."

A Patronus is also a very good way of dealing with such a situation - if you can conjure it. Speaking of Patronuses, mine is a hippogriff.

Jill raised her hand.
"Would Hex-Deflection help, although I doubt that would work against an Unforgivable - Protego is a hex-deflecting spell. Expelliarmus is a good disarming spell," Jill answered.

| Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee "Five points each to Jill, Aph, Kay, Star, MadEye, and ronslilpyro. Those were really excellent suggestions. I see there's some confusion that I'd like to clear up. First, don't dismiss a spell as not useful based on the fact that it wouldn't stop Voldemortist. It WOULD stop most things or people who get in your way, or be effective in slowing them down so you could escape, get help, or perform another spell. Second, I don't know why you keep mentioning Voldemort, as he was defeated long ago. Our CURRENT foe is Voldemortist."
ooc: reminder to all you first years, the school story is set AFTER the HP books to avoid confusion. Therefore, no Voldemort. Talk about him in the past tense... he ain't our baddie. Voldemortist is. Ask some older students about all the trouble he cuased over the past few terms.
