Default Potions Lesson 1: Developing Solution

It's a frosty, overcast December day at Hogwarts—and you may feel the chill in the air as you make your way to the dungeons for your afternoon lesson. Not to worry, though. The Potions classroom is warm and cheery, brightened up with enchanted candles, pine garlands, and poinsettias for the upcoming holiday.

While the usual workstations remain, the perimeter of the classroom has been transformed into what appears to be a photography studio. In the front, a magically-changing photo backdrop is illuminated by several umbrella lights. In the back, black curtains enclose an unidentifiable area.

Professor Varma sits on a stool in the middle of the classroom studio, sporting a pair of festive red robes. She flicks her wand every so often at the backdrop, changing it to a new scene: first a snowy forest, then a tropical beach, then a bright meadow.

Please come in and take a seat at a workstation! Class will begin shortly.

OOC: Hi everyone! Thanks so much for coming. Please remember that although this is our first OOC lesson together, your students have had classes with Shreya for several months now. Feel free to check out the classroom rules before you post.

Lesson Progression:
Q1: What are some ways that we can preserve memories?
Q2: What do you know about how pictures are taken or developed?
Mini Activity: Brew the developing solution.
Main Activity: Develop your own photo.

Atlas knew exactly where his answer was going before the professor had even finished asking the question. Unfortunately his reflexes had be a little slow and his hand shooting up had been somewhat delayed, therefore the introduction to his concept of choice was already voiced...and by Daniel of all people. They said great minds think alike, but Atlas preferred to think of it as a copycat. How could Daniel copy him when Atlas had not yet spoke? A true mystery of the universe.

"With a pensieve," he began. "To elaborate off what he already said." Atlas then pointed at Daniel. "But memories can be altered or skewed too, so accuracy of the memory extraction through the extraction spell compared to the events that actually happened may be questionable. It's kind of all up to the individual to decide how authentic and real they want to be with the preservation of the memory." Which went across all platforms, really.

Anyway.

Atlas had a few memories he would like to remember differently, that was for sure.

Noah busied himself with his notes as the first question was raised. Indeed, Christmastime was a nostalgic period for most of them, and after the events of last term, well, he was sorta-kinda excited to go home with his crazy family. He even looked forward to the annual Mordaunt luncheon that was surely going to be filled with good food, adult chit-chats, ludicrous gift-giving, and seeing his dad get wiped out in chess either by his great gramps or Kiara. As always, it was a sight to see. What may be more interesting was to see Mackenzie join that fray. It was crazy scary how similar his younger brother was to his dad...or even their great gramps.

Anyway, memories. There were a couple of ways to preserve them, and Noah took it to his notes, letting the others contribute verbally.

Developing Solution (???)
  • Ways on how to preserve a memory:
    1. Photography/Photographs
    2. Journaling/Scrapbooking/Diary
    3. Pensieve
    4. Paintings/Drawings/Music
    5. Archiving Materials (??)
Pretty much that was all that he got for now, and was surprised at this point that no one has addressed the elephant in the room, so to speak. Photography, people.

Lia smiled. Maybe they would be working on a potion memory potion today? Why they need for all the props then? Whatever they were going to be doing, she hoped they got started soon. Waiting was always the hardest part.

Hearing one of her nicknames made her cheeks flush pink and another smile form on her lips. "Hey, Tad. Maybe? Otherwise what's the point in the setup?" She shrugged her shoulders a little as he took a seat beside her at their usual workstation.

As the lesson began, Lia quickly started taking down notes as she normally did. Today's choice ink color being a lively shade of sparkly green.

Ooooh!

Lookit the twinkly lights!

Dahlia was momentarily mesmerized by the lights and had trouble looking away. It wasn't really her fault though. The lights were really really pretty! Blinking a couple of times she finally managed to pull her gaze away from the sparkly lights and back onto her note taking and the current question being asking.

"You can make a scrapbook filled with different things for that specific memory. Drawings, ribbons, photos, cards, you can write little messages too." She had waited to be called on with her raised of course.

Lisa figured they needed some festivity so the cranberry red robes were delightful to her. Before she knew it and was settled in, class began. This time.... with a question? She paused, putting on her imaginary thinking cap. So.... how do we preserve memories? Journals, memories, scrapbooking.... Her eyebrows raised when Daniel mentioned a memory retrieval system which Atlas went and explained further. Ah a pensive... but what happened if said memories were not accurate??

Aaand Atlas went to the next logical and appropriate step to further explain.

I was going to say pensive too as an option.” Lies. She probably would have mentioned storing memories in a potion vial using a spell as a way to take or copy said memory. “Atlas mentioned that memories may not be as truthful as we thought and can be altered. And I think I remember reading something about a forgetfulness thing or something in the library.... but....Is there a way to make your memories clearer? Like almost clean the lens of the camera so you can see all the fuzzy parts of it?” she asked curiously, relating her answer to the topic of cameras and photography which made her feel thoroughly clever.

She bit her lip, trying to stop herself from asking her NEXT question. “ALSO... just curious. If you use a pensive, are you completely submerged in the memory or are you just observing?” she asked curiously, looking to Atlas and then Daniel (maybe they’d know) and then about the classroom.

Like most people, Nem had plenty of memories associated with the holidays, though they would not use the term 'nostalgic' to describe them, or any others, or the holidays in general. Just markers, really.

Little did Varma - or anyone else - know, Nem had been tinkering with the subject of memory for the past year or so. Potions did occasionally come into it, depending on the idea they were exploring, but nothing to do with what they figured this lesson would be about. Not that that would have stopped them providing an answer, if they felt so inclined.

Speaking of which: Occlumency. Given what they'd been looking into, that was a fairly obvious one for Nem. Shore up your defences and you could protect your memories from being tampered with not only by outside forces, but even your own subconscious trying to rewrite the details. Similarly, someone else might be able to draw the real memories out, using the opposing(or complementary, depending on perspective) technique of Legilimency, and a not inconsiderable amount of skill. But that was less about preservation, and more about recovery, and there were all kinds of studies into reliability and accuracy, given the complexity of the brain, especially with the influence of magic.

Nem didn't say anything. It was the wiser and therefore their preferred course of action - just in general, these days - but mostly, they simply didn't want to. Just sat there, still and silent, unobtrusive.

Even a few minutes early! So he settled into his seat.

And turned to smile at Kinsay when she slid into the seat next to him. "Hey. Any preliminary guesses on how this will all tie in?" Sometimes it was fun to guess at the beginning of class where the Professors might be going. He was almost always wrong, but that didn't really make it any less entertaining.

But class was starting, so he turned his attention back to the front. He was not looking forward to Christmas and the conversation he had promised to have during it. He had half of a mind to just stay home during the break and ignore it all. And truthfully, he still might. Thankfully the decision had not had to be made quite yet, but it was getting awfully close. But for now, class meant he didn't have to think about it. So he pushed all thoughts of home away while listening to the posed question and raising his hand to offer an answer.

There was the obvious answer of photographs, but frankly he wanted to try to go for something less so. He waited until he was called on to provide an answer. "Journaling is a good way to preserve memories, and capturing the exact emotions felt during the memory." After time a photo would bring nostalgia, and maybe joy, but with a journal entry one would always know exactly what they'd been feeling at that time.

Ahhh, the dreaded forgotten book. Shreya particularly felt for the Gryffindors and Ravenclaws when that happened—they usually had the farthest to trek to retrieve said item. Living in the tallest towers of the castle had its perks, as Shreya recalled from her own time in Ravenclaw, but the staircases to get there were not one of them.

"Very good, Evan. Journaling has the added benefit of helping you process emotions and feelings as you are experiencing them. And notebooks are wonderful keepsakes to look back on," Shreya replied. They certainly had a tangible, lasting nature.

Christmas was the best time of year. Eyes fixed on that garland and the lights, the girl couldn’t help but agree with Varma. She’d had so many good memories with the people she once called her family. The fact that she no longer wanted anything to do with them did not prevent that sharp stab of longing for a few of the members though. Claudine missed them but how could she live in that mansion among killers, even if her entire family didn’t fall into that category?

But there were happier memories, like the ones she had with Heath. This December made it two years since they’d been together as a couple. Claudine glanced yet again at the setup of the room but chose to go in another direction with her answer. “Using complicated bits of magic that allows you, or others, to revisit events that happened and observe them. Even though you’ll be invisible to everyone present at the time the memory took place.” Her answer was a reference to the method a particular Dark Lord had used so many years ago.

"Yes, Ms. Blaze. There are plenty of spells and methods to preserve memories magically." Unfortunately, Shreya's mind also went to dark magic. Such methods were easy to turn to the dark arts. She considered making a mention of it, but she wanted to keep today's lesson upbeat. The students had seen enough dark magic last term.

It could be that she shut down all of her emotions so that she could handle being in... this class. Specifically. Was feeling nothing really fine? Maybe not. She smiled at Noah. She smiled at Eden, who looked very pretty today. Ash wished there was someone to do her hair and makeup that nice. It was one of the few things that she was not skilled at.

... Ash wasn't sure she liked where this lesson was going. Why would you want to preserve all your memories? Ash was already struggling with not wanting her photographic memory. She wished she could wipe the memories of potions class away too. And flying, and DADA, and muggle studies, and CoMC, and HoM, and basically all of the classes she had. All of the memories she had made here. She didn't want them.

Another thing Ash didn't like was that this class seemed to be a class on making photos move. Ash didn't want to make her photos move. She wanted them to stay still.

And now dread was filling her mind. Tasted like... rot.

Ash was not going to say 'moving photos' as an answer to the question. She wasn't going to say it, even if it was the right answer. "You could preserve your memories through art." And there was an interesting tone of voice she was using. It was almost defiance, but maybe it was more like disappointment or unsurprise. Perhaps resignation. Maybe just not-enthusiastic.

Ash didn't want any moving pictures of herself.

Shreya couldn't help but pick up on Ashley's glum attitude. The typically energetic Ravenclaw seemed a bit out of sorts today. Hopefully nothing was troubling her too much. "True! Whether you are painting, drawing, knitting, or using some other creative technique, art is a great way to preserve a memory. Some might create a specific scene in their art, or simply preserve the emotions of a memory with an abstract piece." Art was another method, like journaling, that often helped people process the feelings associated with memories in the moment. It was therapeutic, in a way. That was one of the reasons why Shreya loved painting.

The lights, the curtained-off section in the back, all of it was quite familiar to her, having spent lots of time around her dad's studio setup at home, but her feelings about it all were...complicated, to say the least.

Once, she would have been thrilled by the clear focus of the day's lesson. Photography had been such a passion for her, something she'd shared with her dad and her friend Cooper. She'd loved capturing little moments and random details about things. She'd loved finding ways to improve and to take more interesting photos each time she pulled out her camera. Every day was different, and so there was always something new to see and to learn.

But the past several months...well, they were different. Taking a bad photo had never bothered her before - she wasn't striving for perfection, only to have fun and to learn something new each time. But now everything she took just looked...horrible to her. She could find a flaw in anything. And even though she appreciated the photo scavenger hunts Cooper had setup, and they were fun in the moment...they didn't seem to bring any lasting changes to her feelings. No matter what he said, she didn't like a single photo once she reviewed them.

And it was...frustrating. Something she'd once loved felt like nothing to her now, and she had no idea how to fix it.

Feeling a bit lost in her head, Ivy pulled out some parchment to take notes on this first question and the answers the other students gave. She didn't feel up to giving an answer of her own, and it probably wasn't necessary to write down the answers almost word-for-word, but it helped keep her mind off all the feelings she didn't want to think about.

Another Ravenclaw who seemed a bit out of sorts today. Shreya wondered what was troubling Ivy. Perhaps all this talk about memories brought up some negative emotions for students. Nevertheless, she appreciated that the fourth year was still paying attention.

When he saw Professor Varma peeking her head outside of the classroom and he knew that it was almost time to begin.

While he was listening to the question, his eyes looked around the room again. He had never had a photoshoot before and he wasn't certain if he would like to be photographed or be the photographer. He had read that there was a special potion that made images move, was that what they were going to be learning today? Cause if so then he was excited!!

While the most obvious answer was a photograph, Daniel's hand shot up in the air and wiggled his fingers a little bit. "I read about a memory extraction spell" he said as he lowered his hand. "You can keep it in a potion vial and watch an old memory again"

Daniel may not know that he was sitting in the spot of his older brother's disappearance, but Shreya certainly did. The sight was a bit jarring, and Shreya had to do a bit of a double-take to make sure her eyes weren't deceiving her. Once she was sure that it was simply Minjae's younger brother, she gave the first year an encouraging smile, trying to rid her mind of the memory. "Yes, Daniel. That spell is probably the most accurate way to preserve memories, since it involves every visual and auditory aspect of the scene." But it was a complicated spell, too—and not one that everyone particularly wanted to use. After all, some people didn't want to remember every moment of an event.

Preserving memories, hmmm. Without even thinking of a magical, potiony option, Remy shot up her hand and she said, “I - writing in a diary.” Almost letting slip to the class that SHE, in fact, had a diary. Didn’t want any certain Gryffindors getting their hands on that. AHEM.

"Wonderful, Remy." It was similar to the journaling answer, but Shreya didn't mind. Writing things down was a great way to remember things. It was thanks to writing that early historical events were preserved, after all. The Gryffindor received a nod of approval.

Shreya nodded at both Atlas and Daniel in response. "Excellent, Mr. Flamsteed. A pensive is a useful tool for viewing extracted memories." If she remembered correctly from students' stories, some of them may have had the experience of looking into one during a previous Care of Magical Creatures lesson. "You make a good point. How an individual perceives an occurrence can have a big impact on the type of memory that is stored. One would be wise to keep that in mind when viewing a memory." Very good thinking from the young Gryffindor. He got an encouraging smile from the professor in admiration.

There were plenty of decorated pages documenting time in the Varma household. And indeed, they were a lovely way to look back on old times.

Shreya appreciated the camera metaphor, as evidenced by the broad smile that spread across her face at the Ravenclaw's answer. "There are a handful of memory modification charms that have different effects. Some erase memories, some alter memories, and some are said to clarify them. But such charms can be dangerous. One wrong move, and the memory could be stained unintentionally." She didn't want to get too much into the discussion of memory charms, as it wasn't exactly her area of expertise. But she did try to at least satisfy her students' curiosity. In Shreya's opinion, there was nothing worse than getting shut down by a professor if you had a question. "When you are viewing a memory, you are simply an observer. As it is only a memory, your presence cannot change or alter the events in any way." One would need a time turner to do that. But that was a discussion for another day.

It wasn't at all surprising that Nemesis didn't contribute an answer—Shreya had gotten used to it, and it genuinely didn't offend her. For some reason, she always knew that Nemesis was at least paying attention. But as her eyes swept the room, they lingered on the Slytherin momentarily. She found herself wondering what type of memories Nemesis might be grappling with, if at all. It occurred to her that she didn't know much at all about their home life—another thought about Upstead that both intrigued and worried her.

Shreya was a bit surprised that no one had pointed out the elephant in the room, but perhaps her classroom set-up had just made it too obvious. Nevertheless, she appreciated that the students were thinking outside the box. It would get them into the right mindset for today's lesson.

"Great answers, everyone! As you can see, there are plenty of ways to preserve memories, both mundane and magical." As to why it was important to preserve them, that was a whole other discussion. But hopefully Shreya's reasoning for today's lesson didn't need to be put into words. The events of the last term still troubled her, but they had also showed her the importance of friendship, compassion, and happiness. She wanted to focus more on cultivating positive experiences this term—and she hoped some of the students felt similarly. And what better way to preserve the memories than with pictures? "Today's lesson will focus on a mundane-turned-magical method to preserving memories: photographs."

She gestured to the various pieces of photo equipment scattered around the studio, although she figured most of the students had determined the purpose of the lesson already. "What do you know about how pictures are taken or how we develop them? Both mundane and magical methods are fair game to discuss."

Violet was at a loss. She had seen and possessed photographs, of course, both magical and Muggle, but she really didn't know anything about how they were made. Her method of remembering things, analyzing things, thinking things over, and creating things had always been to write them down. She thought of her current journal, tucked into a secret pocket of her school bag, and felt a sudden rush of happiness that she could carry it with her again and not worry about it getting confiscated by the Neo-Alliance.

But back to the discussion at hand...photographs. "Well...I think it has something to do with...developing fluids of some kind. And you have to keep them dark while you're working on them." And that was about all Violet know about photos. Except that she always looked quite dreadful in them.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash was going to focus on muggle photo development. "Muggles take photos with cameras. Muggle photo developing involves something with chemicals. I think you use chemicals to make negatives, and then do something with light and photo sensitive paper and the negatives." Did Theodore tell her that? Maybe Dustin or Alex? Hmmm. What even was a negative? "I'm not too sure. Most of my pictures are on electronics, not like... printed out." And no, she was not going to mention moving photos. She absolutely did not like moving photos. Nope, no thanks. She'd stick with the muggle version.

Ashley Fox remembered everything.

She didn't need a moving photo to remember.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

The Snakette had never thought about all that number of ways memories could be preserved. It was intriguing, really. Still, it was noted that no one mentioned the obvious method. It was possibly the most common one, after all. Anyway. Her gaze once again went over the classroom’s set up as Varma continued.

Claudine thought about her reply, raised her hand and waited to be called upon. “I think with our moving photos, a special potion is used to achieve that purpose.” She reckoned that the pictures had to be drowned in the potion. Or was it the negatives? It was all sort of confusing.

Oh, PICTURES. Sure, sure. Phoebe tried not to look at Cooper, who was probably vibrating in excitement in his seat. That kid could explain the whole process to them. In detail. Excruciating detail. So, just to make sure she had a chance to answer the question before he answered for them...

Her hand shot up. "My Uncle Mo, that's Coop's dad, he is a photographer. Like they pay him to do it and everything. And he has a dark room for developing the pictures, only it's not totally dark in there. There's like a red light? It's a murder room."

Evan was kind of amused that none of them had actually stated photos as their answers, given how obvious it was that was the topic of discussion. It certainly made things more interesting, and it was nice hearing about what people did to preserve their own memories. He had tried to keep a journal a few times, but he seemed to have a hard time keeping up with it. He preferred to save newspaper clippings from days of important and associate them. Which hadn't been offered as an answer either.

Moving on.

He knew very little about the process of developed photos, other than the fact that it seemed complicated. He much preferred old polaroid's which just... popped out the photo. He raised his hand, though he didn't have too much to process. "It seems like a particularly complicated process. Unless someone is like an actual photographer, they don't usually try to develop photos themselves. Opting for either a digital camera where it can all be done electronically, or sending their film elsewhere to be developed." More commonly option number 1 though now.

Lisa was all ears has she heard the Professor offer her even MORE pearls of wisdom. She scribbled them down into her notebook. The curious hunger was satisfied for now and she offered the Professor a satisfied nod.

So the topic was developing photos..... Lisa has no clue where to start with that question for she didn’t know too much about the camera and developing process. Her cousin, Cora, was a photographer but Lisa spent most of her time IN front of the camera and not BEHIND it. The Ravenclaw, surprisingly to some perhaps, was the model and the beautiful Aphrodite in their family..... She would have flipped her hair for effect but it was in a low ponytail.

I don’t know much but it IS in a dark rooms so I assume you can’t show them light until the process is completely finished. Will we have to brew the solution or thing in the dark? I guess the night vision charm could come in handy.” She murmured the last part, thinking through how exactly to approach said issue.

Interesting.

Yes, Evan, Kinsay had LOTS of preliminary guesses on how this would all tie in. Most of them had to do with photography, something she knew about (sort of) thanks to Uncle Mo and Cousin Cooper. They were the best photographers Kinsay knew. And even if Kinz didn't understand all the intricacies that went into taking pictures with the fancy lenses and vintage cameras, she knew how to point and click. That was half of it anyway. Just as she opened her mouth to offer up her many preliminary guesses, Professor Varma began the class and Kinz had to turn to pay attention.

Big sigh.

Kiz listened super respectfully as everyone offered up answers, but once Phoebe mentioned Uncle Mo, Kiz couldn't think about anything other than CHRISTMAS. Because hopefully Uncle Mo and Aunt Cat would come for a proper visit during the holiday. Riverwalk Cottage was always so much better when they had company.

"I don't think anyone has actually gotten murdered there, Professor" she chimed in right after the Pheebs, incase Professor Varma was worried about it. "Uncle Mo would tell me if there was." She was sure of it. Maybe she'd ask him during the holidays.

Still just sitting quietly in the back corner of the room, Nem was watching their hand as they listened to the lesson. They'd taken one of the metal matchsticks from their pocket and were walking it with preternatural precision over their fingers and knuckles, with only the slightest of finger twitches now and then.

Nem could not claim any expertise about photography itself, or the process of developing photographs. They'd never been particularly interested in being behind the camera, or in front of it; it was such a niche and, as far as they were concerned, unimportant area that they'd also not bothered to learn anything about it. Most of what they knew was information that had filtered through during everyday life or the context of other pursuits, largely unintentional, like this stuff about dark rooms, and the potion to develop magical photographs. Nem knew all their school textbooks cover to cover, and then some; it was no surprise they ended up knowing things they had not set out to learn. All things considered, there was nothing they wanted to add here, even if they felt like speaking up.

As they watched the small metal shape balance, tumble, and roll end-to-end over their fingers, Nem recalled the last time they'd been home and had happened to note some of the family photos around the house. Almost every recent photographed version of themselves had abandoned the scenes, especially the group scenes - it was interesting to note the parallels, or maybe the foreshadowing. Jake and Becca, of course, had always kept regular muggle photos around as well, so it was hardly an issue.

But it was an indication that, in some cases, it was better to not have moving photos at all, if it was memories you wanted to capture. The subjects could bail out just as easily as their real life counterparts. Conversely, it was better if someone magically developed a photograph of you, if that version of you was likely to act appropriately and walk when the time came.

Which led to the question of exactly how and why that occurred, what kind of magic was picking up on what aspects of a person's behaviour. How much of the subject they could see.

Nem's hand stilled. The metal matchstick fell from their fingers with a tiny clatter, and they stared without really seeing it.

SPOILER!!: catchup
Christmas had always been special for Heath, but the holiday took on s different meaning over the past few years. This Christmas marked two years since he started dating Claudine and three since he fell in love with her. Seeing the festive decorations instantly brightened his mood, but it was the photo studio setup that piqued his curiosity. Were they doing a Christmas photo shoot? That sounded fun… also sort of sounded like something his brother would set up for the family to do.

He was already reminiscing about Christmas before Professor Varma mentioned nostalgia, and as he thought, he realized he didn't have any bad Christmas memories, not really. The worst that had happened to him was not getting the present he wanted or doing something awkward in front of the family, like accidentally breaking an ornament or singing the wrong lyrics to a Christmas carol. Even last Christmas stuck here at Hogwarts wasn't completely terrible! Thinking of the holidays with his family hit a bit different now that his experiences last term and the war in general changed the dynamic of his family relationship. What was Christmas going to be like now?

Pushing the thought out of his mind, he focused on the question. Judging by the classroom setup, photography seemed the most obvious answer… maybe a bit too obvious. He also thought of things like pensieves, art and journaling, but those had been said. Maybe he needed to look at the question from a different angle. He considered what he himself did to preserve memories, and his thoughts turned to the collection of theatre programs he kept from every play he was ever in and every play he saw with his dad. His hand went up, and he said, "Some people preserve memories by keeping objects associated with specific memories."

Heath was not the slightest bit surprised when Professor Varma zeroed in on photography. With a setup like this, where else could the lesson possibly go? With the next question in mind, he considered how pictures were taken. Having grown up with a brother who dabbled in photography, he'd picked up a few tidbits of information along the way. He knew photo development was done through a series of chemical baths. He knew there were multiple methods, and each one involved different chemicals and steps, though he didn't understand the process enough to come up with any specific examples. Ugh! He hated no knowing what to say in class! If only Fiyero was here to help him with this question!

As Heath's thoughts turned to his brother, he remembered a specific camera he once used. Not a digital or a magical camera. It was a big boxy-looking one that spit the photos out when it took them. What did Fiyero say about that camera again? Raising his hand, he said, "There's the instant camera, a type of muggle camera that, as the name suggests, develops photos instantly. It uses a special film with the chemicals needed for development already included, and the camera develops the pictures itself. I don't know how it works exactly."

It was a good start—and Shreya was not at all surprised that the talented Potions student picked up on the chemical combination part of the process. "Very good, Ms. Blackthorne! Traditional film photographs must be processed with three separate solutions: a developing solution, a stop solution, and a water bath." Her eyes briefly flitted to the black curtains at the mention of keeping the film in the dark. "And you are correct: Most photo paper is light sensitive, meaning that you must develop your film in the darkness." There were certainly digital and wizarding solutions to the issue, but traditional developing was still a treasured skill.

"Excellent, Ashley. The developing solutions that Violet mentioned previously are composed of various chemicals. The chemicals activate the light-sensitive photo paper, allowing the picture to appear." It really was a tricky process, one that required precise timing. Digital photographs were certainly easier, but there was a certain charm that came with old-school film development.

Shreya couldn't help but break into a smile at the Slytherin's response—she had hit the nail of today's lesson topic right on the head. "Absolutely, Claudine. The developing solution is one way to make wizarding photographs move." Of course, there were special types of wizarding cameras, film, and spells, but the developing solution was the traditional method. The students would certainly be learning more about that next.

Red light is the only type of light that won't prematurely expose photo paper, which is why that color is used. It's referred to as a safe light." Though a part of her really hoped that it wasn't actually a murder room. That was just a joke, right?

Digital cameras can often be an easier and more convenient option." Or sending the film elsewhere, though that could cost a pretty sickle. "But you have to admit, developing a photo on your own gives you a great sense of accomplishment." Or so they'd soon discover!

Her eyes twinkled a bit at the young Ravenclaw's curiosity. So bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. It was refreshing! "Yes, Lisa. You are correct that it must be dark to develop a photo. The only time photo paper can be exposed to light is when you're transferring the film negative onto it and after the paper has been through the developing solutions." She chuckled a bit at the question about brewing the potion in the dark. "Not to worry. The potion does not need to be brewed in the dark."

But something about the Slytherin seemed particularly contemplative, and Shreya couldn't help her mind from wandering in curiosity. What were they thinking about? It was unbelievably hard to tell, and that frustrated her.

The professor was making a round around the classroom, listening to other students' answers, when the matchstick fell to the ground. But she wasn't close enough to their workstation to see what it was.

Shreya was glad that someone had brought up an instant camera. Such a convenient way to capture memories, and a charming one, too. "Wonderful, Heath. There are even some wizarding types of instant cameras that produce moving photographs—no developing solution needed." She had considered bringing some today, but she wanted the students to get the experience of developing a real picture from scratch.

Shreya had started to make a move toward the chalkboard, ready to jot down a couple of notes, until she figured that it wasn't really relevant to the subject at hand. They were talking about the developing solution today, not photography as a whole. But at least it was a fun discussion—no need to spoil it with notetaking. And by the looks of it, the students had already learned something new.

"There are a variety of methods we can use to develop photos. Some digital and instant cameras can do it immediately: no special processing methods or spells needed. Other methods, like the one we will discuss today, take a bit more time." She returned to the stool and took a seat. "But there is one distinct difference between mundane and magical photographs: Our photos can move." Whether that was a good or bad thing, she would leave to the students to decide for themselves.

"While there are several magical methods that can be used to enchant a photograph, such as special cameras and spells, we're going to be focusing on the most traditional method: the developing solution. This potion will make a moving picture." She gestured to her own cauldron in the center of the classroom, which contained a thick, ebony concoction. Although nothing was stirring it, it continued to slosh around.

"We're going to capture and develop our very own pictures today. But the first step is to brew the potion." With a tap of her wand toward the chalkboard, the instructions appeared. "You'll start by combining some liquids in your cauldron. Then, you'll need to crush some dransul leaves and proceed from there."

SPOILER!!: Instructions

Ingredients:
2 cups water
2 cups elf-made wine vinegar
3 Dransul leaves
3 billywig stingers
1 snargaluff pod (to expedite brewing)

Instructions:
1. Fill cauldron with water. Heat over a low flame until gently simmering. Add elf-made vinegar.
2. Crush Dransul leaves until acid forms. Using a dropper, add 3 drops of acid to the cauldron and stir counter-clockwise 3 times.
3. Add billywig stingers. The potion should turn a dark burgundy color.
4. Point wand at potion and move it in a spiral motion while casting "Agitatum." Once the potion is moving, add the snargaluff pod.
5. Cast "Glacius" or extinguish the flame manually and wait for the potion to cool. If brewed correctly, the potion will turn black. It will continue to move within the cauldron. Let potion thicken for approximately 30 minutes.

"Keep a close eye on the color of your potion. It should start clear, but transform into burgundy, and then black as you complete the process." With a clap of her hands, she sent the students off to prepare their cauldrons.

OOC: Mini-activity time! You have approximately 48 hours (probably a bit more) before we move on. Feel free to brew in as many or as little posts as you prefer. Shreya will be making the rounds in case you have any questions!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Ohh, what was Varmas’s smile all about?

Had Claudine’s answer been what the woman was looking for or was it something else? She’d find out soon enough. In the meanwhile, there was nothing to do but busy herself by listening to the replies, and then to Varma as she sat back down on the stool.

So. Claudine had been right. This pleased her. The girl’s gaze followed the professor’s indication to the cauldron then to the board where the ingredients and method appeared. She was excited about this particular potion and she wasn’t even sure why. Right to brewing she got.

Once the cauldron was cleaned, two cups of water were measured out and added. The burner was ignited and set on a low flame after which she kept a sharp eye on the contents. While she waited and watched, the required amount of Dransul leaves were crushed. When the water in the cauldron was finally simmering as described, the two cups of elf made vinegar were poured in.

Had Claudine crushed the Dransul leaves until there was acid? Yes. That’s why the dropper could now be used to collect some. One, two, three drops went into the cauldron. Using the stirrer, the ingredients there got three counter clockwise stirs.

Not bad so far.

Violet had heated her water until it was gently simmering, and while it heated, she began to think of the photographs she owned. There were the magical ones in her family home, of course, ancestors and such. Those were magical, of course. And the one in her grandfather's study of her mother when she was a young girl--he had recently put that out on her desk, because Violet couldn't remember seeing it there before.

And then Violet had some Muggle photos--one of her father that she'd torn out of a Muggle newspaper when Miss Howard wasn't looking, the morning that they'd left New York. And a Muggle picture of her mother that she'd nicked from her father's hotel room right before she'd run off--it was the first and only picture of her that Violet owned and she didn't feel sorry one bit for taking it.

Violet was roused from her memories by the sound of the water simmering. Hurriedly, before it all evaporated, she poured in the vinegar and picked up the bowl of acid that she'd poured off of the bowl of Dransul leaves when she'd crushed them earlier. Using the dropper, she added the acid to her cauldron--one, two three, and began to stir the potion counter-clockwise three times.

Well, yes, Professor Varma did have a point that it was probably more satisfying to develop your own photo. But Evan had never really even tried picture taking. Cora took enough for the whole family, and if he was going to assist he usually did so by like... holding a reflector or switching a back drop for her. And even that was entirely rare. This might be interesting to write to her about though, if he decided to reach out at all.

He really was bad with his cousins, outside of Chase.

Once it was time to start brewing, he wiped his cauldron out to be on the safe side and ensure no residual... something from inside of it. And he turned his attention to measuring out the water and starting the fire beneath and watching it until a simmer had been established. It did not take too long, thankfully, and soon he was able to add his elf-made vinegar and began crushing his Dransul leaves. So far so good!

He took his eye dropper, once his leaves had become acid like, and added three drops. He raised his hand for a quick question, "Professor Varma? At what stage should we start to see a color change?" Just in case it came EARLY and he should be worried about an explosion or something equally as possible with potion brewing.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Once Fiona had ensured that her Potions making equipment was nice and clean, she began to make the potion. She carefully measured and poured the two cups of water into her cauldron before carefully heating the cauldron under a low heat causing the water to simmer gently. Fiona then measured the two cups of elf-made vinegar and poured it into the cauldron.

Using her mortar and pestle, Fiona slowly crushed the three Dransul leaves until acid formed. Picking up her dropper, she extracted a small amount of acid and three drops slowly went into the mixture. Using her stirrer, the potion was stirred three times in a counter-clockwise direction. Fiona then gave the equipment that was no longer needed a clean with a quick cleaning spell.

Using her tweezers, Fiona grabbed three billywig stingers before dropping them into the potion. Pausing for a moment, Fiona waited for the colour of the potion to alter to a dark burgundy which it thankfully did.

Taking in a small breath, Fiona pointed her wand at the potion and moved it in a spiral. "Agitatum," she cast, causing the potion to begin to move inside the cauldron. Fiona then added the snargaluff pod.

The Snakette used a non-verbal spell to extinguish her flame and waited for her potion to cool down. She once again cleaned her tools whilst she waited for the potion to change colour. Fiona breathed a small sigh of relief as the swirling potion turned black.

It wasn't that Atlas flinched at Lisa's mispronunciation...but Atlas flinched a bit at each of Lisa's mispronunciation. Flinch AND mutter 'pensieve' under his breath with each utterance of the Ravenclaw's. The excellent from Professor Varma was very much appreciated, by the way, and Atlas sort of wiggled in his seat as the lecture continued and the actual to-do list revealed.

Atlas remembered the pinhole camera project dad had done with himself and Aries when they were little. Also a whole bunch of talk about the rectilinear theory of light...though by the time Atlas got to thinking about raising his hand to explain the more science-y side of everything...things had moved on. The sad this being that no one had talked about the rectilinear theory of light either. Truly a tragedy.

The ebony color of the professor's brew was really pretty though...and the Gryffindor felt a certain kind of irony in that a developing solution that produced clear images was so...not clear.

Speaking of clear, Atlas FIRST made sure that his cauldron was clean and free of any containments (his wand did enough damage on its own to not introduce outside disasters too) and then took a deeeeeeeeeeeep breath before pointing his wand inside the cauldron. "A-Aguamenti?"

Nothing.

"Aaaaaaaaguamenti?"

Still nothing.

"Aguamenti?!"

Again...nothing.

Perhaps there was something clogging up the tip of his wand? Atlas pointed the wand at his own face to inspect it when suddenly a jet of water erupted from his wand and knocked him square off his stool. Legs flailing and water shooting upwards and then raining down on others, the second year toppled over and landed on his back with a dull thud.

This would not have happened if the spell had been Bombarda.

Default Ash's question
Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash supposed it was alright, since this was potions class, to NOT actually use a photo. So she began to brew the potion. She heated her cauldron, added the vinegar and the acid, and began to stir. Wait. Okay, but wait. Ash raised her hand. "Professor, we don't actually have to use this, do we?" Because Ash was absolutely not going to. It made her uncomfortable to watch moving photos, especially ones of herself. It was as if she carried a tiny person trapped in her pocket, and that obviously brought up some awful memories. She didn't say it though. Not here. Not now. Not with people she didn't trust. "Say we brew the potion, and then let someone else use it. Say we get our picture taken- or don't- and then don't put it in the solution, because we don't want to. Are we allowed to do that?" Because if she had permission, then it was easy and they could move on. If she didn't have permission, then she'd... do the same thing without permission. Any moving pictures of her were going to get shredded with diffindo. Nobody was going to carry her around in their pocket like he did.

She finished stirring and added the stingers, then moved on to start step four. Still enough room to "accidentally" make her potion unusable, if that was what needed to happen.

"Accidentally" on purpose, more like.

Claudine glanced at the instructions. Three Billywig stingers. They were added together because the instructions did not specify if adding them that way or separately mattered. The girl watched the cauldron intently for this is where a bit of colour changing should happen. Would she have to wait long for it to happen? Did it take minutes? Secon- Oh. There it went. Dark burgundy! This meant that the brewing process could continue.

Wand. Claudine grabbed the Dragon heartstring wand, took a breath and focused. She really hated it when potions required spellwork as part of their process. Like, what if the spellwork was screwed up? This made her very concerned and her hand went up.

“Professor? If our spellwork isn’t successful on the first attempt, would it impact our potion?” Asking for herself mainly.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

wItH A PeNsIeVe

Daniel knew what Atlas was trying to do. He was trying to elaborate on his answer to get the attention and he was proven right when he went on about how memories could be altered. Which was not what this was about? The Professor had only asked for some ways how memory could be preserved and not about the accuracy of the spell.

The Hufflepuff rolled his eyes when he was done talking. 'Show-off' he thought. As the class continued, the first year finally opened up his notebook and began to copy the keywords that the students around him were mentioning about the subject on how to develop photographs. He already knew that a special potion was used to achieve the moving of the photos that Claudine mentioned but WHAT kind of potion was it? So when it came to the potion brewing part and they were going to be making that exact potion, the Hufflepuff was excited to start.

But before he could start, Atlas Flamsteed happened. He watched him attempting the water-making spell and when it did not work he...stared at the tip of his wand?! Instead of advising him not to do that cause it was dangerous, Daniel waited expectedly almost eagerly and let out a snort!laugh when the charm hit him in the face.

Idiot.

Leaving him on the ground because the older Gryffindor was not a baby and could get up by himself, Daniel turned to his cauldron and pointed his wand at it. Although it was not part of the step, he still used the scouring charm on the cauldron in case any left-over potion from the previous class was left in the cauldron before pointing his wand at the cup next to his cauldron "Aguamenti" he said and frowned when nothing happened. No! He was supposed to be able to use this spell on the first try or else he'll look stupid as well! "Aguamenti!" he said more firmly and let out a sigh when water filled the cup. He added it to the cauldron and then repeated the same spell and added a second cup. This done, Daniel lit up the heat under the cauldron on a low flame until it began to simmer and added the vinegar after measuring it in the cups twice.

While this was going he took the Dransul leaves from his workstation and began to crush them until they were acid and grabbed the dropper. He cleaned the dropper first before adding three drops of the acid to the cauldron and...and then what? He inspected the chalkboard at the front of the classroom to read the next step.

When Violet added the billiwig stingers, her potion began to turn a nice dark burgundy red, just as expected. She then pointed her wand at the cauldron, cast "Agitatum", and began to move her wand in a spiral. She enjoyed watching the potion magically begin to move in time to her wand movements--really, magic was wonderful, wasn't it?

But business before pleasure--time to add the snargaluff pod--there. And then she cast "Glacius" to snuff her flame (because really, why would she do it manually when magic was so satisfying?). Then she stood back and waited (a bit impatiently) for it to cool to see if it would turn black as expected.
