Default Office of Professor Schmoe

If one were to walk a few paces to the right of the class bulletin board, they'd find an actual office, where Professor Schmoe resides (sort of)! It's far more comfortable and spacious than the repurposed broom closet he had at Beauxbatons, don't you think? Ah, the sweet joy of being the only school in your school.

Once you've been welcomed in, you'll notice that you can actually stretch your arms out to their full stretch capacity. So go on, give yourself a nice stretch! Professor Schmoe encourages it. Good for the joints.

Your professor has a simple, wooden desk (from, you guessed it, IKEA!) at one end of the room. On top of the desk, there is always a pile of books, papers, a framed photo of Alina, and random muggle gadgets 'n gizmos. Puzzles! Rubik cubes! Fidget spinners! Forks (in case he is having office dinner)! He sure loves his things. Behind his desk, there is a HUGE bookshelf. With BOOKS. Lots and lots of BOOKS! In front of his desk, are two beanbag chairs for you to sit in. Careful, they slump down more than you'd think. And finally, on the wall near all of the strange (vintage!) (muggle!) band posters (re: backstreet boys, one direction, NSYNC, BTS), there is a moving cat-clock, whose ticking echoes quite loudly.

The office is a little more crowded this year, as if someone had taken all of Schmoe's belongings from his home and placed them all over the office. It's fine. Everything is fine. He's got it all in a series of stacked boxes, so hopefully it's not distracting. Er. AnYwAy.

If you'd fancy a chat, just knock on the door! .... Or don't. But uh. He probably won't know you're here if you go that route.

OOC: Hello! There's no separate thread for a waiting area, so you can start here. Feel free to start a seperate timeline, even if others have posted before you. You can assume that his door is locked because that's what a responsible professor would do.

be curious, not judgmental

Look, Teddy wasn't a brown-noser, but he did care about people enough to unashamedly be standing outside the door of Schmoe's office with the intention of checking in on him. Just. To see how he's doing. How he's holding up. If he needed help in any way, maybe, to sort through things that may have been destroyed, if there was anything left. Or just... you know, try to help put to ease the eccentric man who had already been jittery enough before all the horrors of the last year. The Ravenclaw hoped he'd be surprised with the state of his Head of House - maybe he'd had a wonderful summer, engaged in some therapy, picked up some new rewarding hobbies - but truthfully, he wasn't counting on it.

The sixth year knocked on the door thrice and waited.

Though Finneas had arrived at Hogwarts a little earlier this year, his office was still a mess. A mess he intended to clean... eventually. And what better time for eventually than, er, right this moment! Was he looking for an excuse just to keep himself busy? Pffffffffffffft. Of course not!!! If he wanted an excuse, he'd pick up a Rubik's cube.... Not that he knew which box he was storing those in.

Er.

AnYwAy.

Giant box in hand, he nearly jumped when he heard the knocks on his door. It only took him a moment to remember that behind the door, he likely had a student visitor. He hadn't had one of those in a long while. Er, not after the majority of his students were locked away in that horrible Room. "C-come in," he called out, loud enough to be heard from the other side of the door. Fortunately he hadn't locked it today because, er, his hands were full of... box at the moment, and Finneas hadn't yet decided where he wanted to set this one down.

With permission to enter granted, Teddy was a little hesitant to enter, anticipating the various states the man could be in - but when he entered, it was about what he expected, truthfully. Schmoe wasn't crying, which was good, and while the office was in a state of disarray, it didn't faze Teddy.

"Hi, professor," was his chipper greeting, perhaps a bit too chipper for the occasion. That was just Teddy, though. "Just wanted to stop by and... check in on you." He shrugged. "Not really a secret that last term was hell, and perhaps more so for you than most." They all suffered, but the torment the Muggle Studies professor was put through was... a special brand of torture. Teddy could rationalize the man's morale being at an all-time low, but he hoped things were looking up in that capacity. "I wanted to offer my services, for anything you might need. Cleaning, re-organizing, moving things... whatever seems like a lot right now. I mean, everything is a lot, for everyone, but your Ravenclaws will do what they can to help, if you just ask." Did he know? "My sisters, too, and likely countless others."

Teddy knew he didn't have any real authority to speak on behalf of the whole student body, but he figured Schmoe would get the point: his students were there for him.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash kept feeling uneasy. The unease came from a nagging feeling that maybe she was wrong. About everything. Ash could be blind sometimes, but she wasn't blind to other people's opinions about her. She was well aware that most people thought she was unable of making decisions. She couldn't understand why. Sure, she made stupid decisions, but she knew what she was getting into when she made them and understood the consequences. She wasn't reckless, she was just... willing to ignore the consequences. Reckless meant you didn't think about the consequences. Ash thought about them all the time, she just didn't care.

But she still felt uneasy about this. Hence why she was knocking on Schmoe's door. If anyone could reassure her that being defiant didn't make her an idiot, it was Schmoe. She was pretty sure she trusted him. He'd suffered consequences too. Did he regret defiance? That was Ash's big worry at the moment. If an adult she respected thought that everyone should just stay out of trouble and stop speaking out, then maybe she was doing something wrong. Maybe she was hurting other people with her actions. Maybe she should just... be quiet for once and stop standing up to superior forces that she couldn't beat. But she wouldn't believe it until she heard it from Schmoe. Her would know the right answer to her question.

Do you regret standing up?
Should I?

"Mr. James," Finneas greeted the young man with a awkward sort of smile that still managed to exude qualities of warmth. It was the Schmoe way. "That's, er, that's very..." Finneas was touched, to say the least. He had gone soft. Can't spell Schmoe without EMO. "That's very kind of you, Teddy." Schmoe looked down at the box in his hands for a moment just to focus on something else, before looking back up to address the sixth year.

Teddy had been just a first year when Finneas started teaching at Hogwarts. It was ... so strange how quickly time went by.

"I, er, I suppose I could use some expertise on organization, if you have any advice to share?" Heh. It was no secret that Finneas wasn't the most put together professor in the castle. He didn't even make the top 12.

Heh, AnYwAy, where were his manners!? "Would you like some tea? Or I, er, I also have hot cocoa?" Yes, let him get on that. He'd just set the box... Over in this corner. That seemed like a good place for a box. Whew! His arms were SORE.

Finneas was just preparing some tea when he heard the knock on his door. Setting the kettle down, he moved to open the door in that bumbling way of his. "Hullo, Ms. Fox," he offered her a warm smile as he opened the door in full. "Would you, er, would you like to come in?" He hadn't the faintest idea as to what brought her here today, but he was pleased to see her. Finneas had been meaning on checking in. Last term was a rough one for her, particularly.

Schmoe gestured to welcome her inside. Luckily, he had managed to... somewhat organize the place and the beanbag chairs were extra inviting today - he had taken a quick break to sit in one earlier today. "I've just prepared some tea." He had an assortment of tea bags if she wasn't a fan of the chamomile he had prepared with loose leaves. Many options to choose from.

Ash read something in a book one time. That when you were walking into a haunted house, you must cross over fast or risk panicking and being unable to move. Same principal applied for this visit. So Ash stepped in and clasped her hands. "Thank you. Can I sit down in one of those beanbags? No thanks on the tea. You can have it."

Tea?
I don't drink tea.
What do you drink?
Not tea.

Ash suddenly needed to know the answer right now. Because she wanted to run away, and if she did, she'd never have an answer. "Schmoe... would it have been better if I didn't... you know... fight all the time?" She blinked fast so that no tears could even consider falling. "Wouldn't it be worse if I didn't?" She didn't understand why people wanted her to shut up and stop drawing attention. Did they think she would be safe if she didn't speak out. She wouldn't. She would be dead, right next to all the other muggleborns. Maybe they could live happily ever after in silence with a whole group of people suffering right next to them. WAS THAT WHY? WAS IT? "It's not fair... they don't get it... because being quiet would get me hurt anyway even if I didn't do anything." Ash could feel the floodgates of tears coming on. Great. How long had she been in here? One minute? Five?
Well. This was not optimal.

"Er yes, of course," he gestured to the beanbags. Finneas wasn't entirely oblivious to the urgency with which she stepped inside, but he politely refrained from inquiring. He had a feeling she would address the matter soon enough, call it professor's intuition. Or, er, something like that. "I, er, also have hot chocolate if that interests you." He'd pour a cup of chamomile just for himself then.

He moved over to do just that, but paused to look up as Ashley spoke again. The tea could wait. Ms. Fox posed an interesting question. It was one that Finneas wasn't sure he had the ultimate answer to, but he did listen as she continued to elaborate. Sometimes, when you remained quiet, a student would come to their own conclusions. Often times, it helped to allow them to marinate in the question they posed for themselves. Or maybe it didn't. At least this way he could buy himself some more time when he needed. It was easier to converse via owl, when you didn't have to give instantaneous replies.

He stood reverently (aside from the occasional twitch), only speaking when he was sure she was finished sharing her own thoughts. "I'm, er, I'm not sure there's a right answer to that, Ms. Fox," he replied honestly. "You did what you could with what you had and with what you knew at the time." As he began to elaborate, he felt he was saying this just as much for himself as he was for Ashley. Perhaps one day, he would be able to internalize this. But for now, he felt the guilt full force. Was he doing all he could by staying here? By teaching? "That's all we could do. You did what you thought would protect you." And perhaps it did not work in the way that they would have hoped and, perhaps, it did hurt more than it did help, but the information they had was limited. Schmoe found that clarity often only came from hindsight. "Do you, er, do you feel it would have been better?"

Ash absolutely was not interested in crying in front of anybody ever. So she sniffled really loud to suppress the tears. The tears were ready to fall, but she was not going to let them. They could fall when she got back to the dormitory, or the treehouse or a closet, or even the laundry room. Somewhere where they could fall alone. The tears and the girl. "Yes, please. I'd have some hot chocolate." Hot chocolate sometimes burned her tongue. But that was okay. Ash didn't mind those burns. They weren't even close to the feeling of real fire. And hot chocolate sometimes had whipped cream and marshmallows. Ash did not think there would be either. And she was too afraid to ask. But hot chocolate was hot chocolate. It was mostly good. "Well, the headmaster asked how we liked to handle situations. And I said just go into the situation with what you have and make the best decision you can, and he did NOT think that was safe." Or something like that. And an angrier version of Ash would have said that that's why they had a war where everyone almost died. And that nobody was safe and they were all gonna die in the end anyway. Ash HAD said that before. Actually not very long ago, at that mandatory therapy thing... but she did not feel like saying it now. Maybe she would later. It was still true. "I don't see any other options though. Doing nothing usually seems like the worst option to me." Because what if you did nothing and someone got hurt because of it? If they got hurt because of your actions, at least you had tried, right? Sure, a pureblood supremacist could get upset with her defiance, but they were also upset with her existence, so it didn't really matter. Ash wished that the other people at Hogwarts would understand.

Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced. Ash remembered that quote. It was taped to the wall at the muggle school where she used to go. It made so much sense to her now.

This was likely for the best because... er... well... er. Finneas wasn't ever good with crying. Consoling students was difficult enough on it's own, but when tears were involved? The biggest of yikes. This was not something he'd ever know how to navigate. Emotions were not his forté.

He was quite glad that she took him up on his offer of hot chocolate though. That'd keep him busy whilst he navigated this feelsy conversation. Er. AnYwAy. He mozied his way over to his little beverage corner and poured himself a cup of tea, before moving to prepare a cup of hot chocolate for the young Ravenclaw. "Ah, I see," he replied thoughtfully. But did he see? Did he ReAlLy? Maybe not. But he could try to understand. That's what Schmoes did. Try.

"Perhaps in some cases," he began, not entirely certain if they were still speaking of the events from last term or if they were speaking more generally now. "It is, er, it is worthwhile to to pause and give a situation some thought?" He offered gently as he turned around to hold out the cup of hot chocolate for her taking. "That is an action in it of itself, er, is it not?" Just some food for thought. Also hot chocolate for thought.

Sure, pausing to think was an action. But that wasn't what the ministry was doing while she was being tortured and kidnapped and threatened. Oh, no. They weren't 'stopping to think'. They weren't thinking about all possible routes to save her. They weren't even 'being cautious'. They were doing nothing on purpose, and they were actively helping the perpetrators in doing so. And that inaction was an action in and of itself.

Ash didn't believe for a second that the government had come to save her. They had come to save the purebloods. They had came to save face. They had came to save themselves from the backlash they would receive when their involvement with the pureblood supremacists became public knowledge that everyone could see. But her? No. If her suffering was the only reason to come, they'd have left her there to die. They'd have left her friends and family to die. Enough of this 'Be grateful! All the adults came to save you!' nonsense. She was sick of it. It left a burning taste on her tongue.

"Pausing is a decision. An alright one, I guess. But half the time, 'thinking' is a cover for ignoring the problem." Wasn't it sickening? How all these people could feel guilt, feel it weighing on their conscience? They felt bad as they watched an entire group of people get hurt like this, Ash was sure they did. Then why. Did. They. Not. Do. ANYTHING.

Now would be a great time for that hot cocoa. It was soothing. Soothing enough to stop her from having another moment of screaming and running? Maybe. Maybe not. Only time could tell.

Finneas could understand why it felt like this. Even he was disappointed in the lack of immediate response, but errr... Perhaps there was more to the story than either of them would ever know. And, er, perhaps Finneas Schmoe liked to give people the benefit of the doubt, even when it was often times unwarranted. But, well, aNyWaY.

"That can, er, that can also be true, yes," he nodded, twitching whilst the cup of coacoa was in his hand and nearly spilling it all over his floor. Fortunately, he only spilled a little bit on his hand, but er. It did burn and he did pull a face in reaction. Perhaps he ought to magic the hot chocolate towards her, but then again he was Schmoe. Schmoe, he carried it all the way over to her instead, his hand shaking a little as he held the cup out for her.

And for what it is worth, "I'm proud of you, Ms. Fox. No matter what was said, despite anyone's false narratives, you belong here." Maybe more than some of the rest of them did.

Her words got him to thinking though - not a new thought, but one that had been floating around in his head for quite some time now. One that made him debate the decision to come back to the castle this year and one that kept him up at night, debating whether or not he ought to return next year. Was staying at Hogwarts inaction on his part? He, er, he wasn't sure. Despite the outcome of the war, the ideologies revealed though the previous regime were here to stay. They had always been present, of course, but they weren't hidden any more.

The wizarding world still needed people to be fighting the good fight. Maybe Schmoe needed to be fighting the good fight too.

Ash looked at Schmoe dubiously. UM. Did he need help with that hot cocoa? She was trying to monologue internally (and maybe externally) here. She was Explaining Her Motivations here, just like the villains always did in movies. She was very unimpressed with this take. She'd never be a supervillain now. How was she supposed to give cool supervillain speeches while he was spilling hot drinks on himself??? UM??? Although it might be for the best that she was never going to be a supervillain, and relieving to see that Schmoe was almost the same as before. She took a long sip of hot cocoa. Was it hotter than she would have liked? Yep. But Ash always said that temperature could only be felt in reality, and it had been true so far. So at least she knew she was in the real world because of the burning sensation on her tongue. She took another sip.

"I'm only really here because of that stuff. because I deserve to be here. Because like, stick it to the man, I guess." The man being Lucien Rosier's dead body. "'Do I deserve to be here' is a much simpler question than 'do I want to be here'." THAT was an admission. Ash was 100% sure that she had every right to be here. But she was not always so sure that she'd be better off. Mostly, she was here because she felt that some people didn't want her to be here. And the more they tried to make her leave, the more she tried to stay. So yeah. That was a thing. A Big Thing. That she thought about a lot.

Every action has an equal opposite reaction?

Everything was FiNe. His name was FIN(N)Eas Schmoe, after all. Just a little hot chocolate spillage, aisle one, nothing he couldn't clean up later. What mattered was that Ms. Fox had her hot chocolate and Finneas had a cup of tea waiting for himself on his desk and now he could sit down and not be a safety hazard to everyone and everything around him. All was well.

Sort of.

He bobbed his head as Ashley spoke, hoping to show he was listening attentively. Stick it to the man. What an interesting notion. One Finneas could understand the merit of, but he certainly hoped there was more reason to be--

Ah.

"A much simpler question indeed," Finneas blew on his tea, hoping to cool it down as he thought about the question. For Finneas, the question of wanting to be here was simple. The question of 'Should I be here?' was the more difficult one. "Is it, er, is it a question you hope to answer?"

ok then. The hot chocolate problem seemed to be over. Pity, maybe, because Schmoe try to listen and be well-coordinated at the same time would never get old.

Did Schmoe know that she didn't know how to do anything but fight? That might be relevant information. Ehhh, he probably knew it already. It was obvious in her every action. In her constant equal opposite reactions. Or whatever. Something like that.

That was why she was here. Going home or getting hurt too bad was defeat, and Ash never accepted defeat, like, ever. "I only want to answer the question if the answer is yes. If the answer is no, then I'm not going to answer it until the answer is yes." Because what would saying "I don't want to be here and I need to go home" mean? It would mean defeat. And she didn't survive this long here to fail now, when everything was calm.

She took a big gulp of way-too-hot-cocoa, completely ignoring the pain. "I'm not going to leave if I made it this far." Especially when that was what everyone else seemed to want her to do.

Bernadette was a lost little soul, but she was here to visit her BFF Schmoe.

Because she had to. It was obligatory. It was part of her yearly routine.

She knocked on the door thrice, and then straightened her ponytail, her mouth slightly downturned while she waited on him to answer her request.

Schmoe knew better than to believe that all Ashley knew how to do was fight. Not only would it be unwise to believe such a thing, but it would also be incredibly limiting of everything the Ravenclaw was capable of, even if fighting did play a big part in that. It wasn't inherently a bad thing; perhaps Finneas needed to take a page out of her book and fight some more. It was certainly something on his mind.

Finneas took a sip of his tea, hiding his proud smile behind his mug. Or, er, trying to anyway. "Your determination in the face of adversity is, it's er, very admirable, Ms. Fox." A sense of determination they all ought to adopt.

Finneas was sat inside his office, as one does. Feet propped up on his desk, a cup of tea in one hand and a letter in the other. He had read over the letter several times now and he wasn't reading over it now. He was simply staring into The Void (TM) and thinking the Big Thoughts. Decisions were never one of his strongest skills and his friend was asking him to make a big one.

But, er, thankfully he had time to decide annnnnnnnnnnnd what better way to put off the decision than to answer the door.

He nearly jumped out of his socks (whew!), when he heard the knocks. It took him a few seconds to put his feet on the floor (splashing a nice pattern of tea on his button-down) and put away his letter, but once he did all that, Schmoe flicked his wands towards the door. "Come in," he called from the Inside.

"Er, ah, hello, Bernadette!"

Time for the yearly pilgrimage, already? "Tea?"

But it was true. Ash really didn't know how to do anything but fight. The fighting might be subtle, or not. It might be losing battles to win the war, or refusing to lose at all. It might be secret fighting. It might be out in the open. It could be verbal or physical. It could be internal, with Ash fighting herself. She could even fight using preplanned tactics. But there was never a point where she wasn't fighting. Ash vs. Cambridge. Ash vs. Rosier. Ash vs. Healer Poppy. Ash vs. the government. Ash vs. Atlas. Ash vs. her remaining friends. Ash vs. herself. Ash vs. the universe. Ash didn't know what it was like to feel satisfied or peaceful. She always wanted more. The war being 'over' was not enough for her to calm herself. And besides, what did 'over' really mean? People celebrated at the 'end' of all the wars about blood status. But the wars couldn't have ended if there were several of them on the same subject. That didn't even make sense. In Ash's opinion, it was all just a never ending struggle, where she won ground and lost it as she went along. Like climbing a really steep hill. Like that one guy in the underworld who had to push a rock up a hill and it kept slipping.

Ok, it was true that Ash DID know how to do more than fight. A better way to phrase it would have been that she did not know how to stop fighting, and she wasn't sure she even wanted to.

Ash didn't think she was very brave. It was just... when you were trapped between a tall cliff and an evil BBEG, there was only one way to go that gave you a chance of survival. And Ash didn't fight for herself because she wasn't scared, she fought for herself because the alternatives were worse. She was just surviving. But hey, at least Schmoe could appreciate that 'bravery'. Lots of people... they didn't understand how she only had one option.

"I don't really see any other options, other than continuing on." She shrugged. What would it mean to NOT try to make it? There were 14 million possibilities for her life path, and only one ended well. But that was a chance, wasn't it? And it worked out fine in that movie.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

First day back from the holiday break, Margaret made her way straight to Schmoe's office, rucksack strapped to her back. It had taken some convincing on her mother's part, but she'd managed to obtain a gift for the Muggle Studies professor. It wasn't much, but...it was the thought that counted. At least, that's what she'd been told.

After just a quick peek in the "technology" lounge, she quickly stationed herself in front of the office door and gave it a big loud knock.

Navigating conversation wasn't one of Schmoe's strong suits. He wasn't very good with these things. Parties were the worst. He did enjoy office visits and time with his students, but er. It was still a daunting task for the extreme introvert he was. "Is there, er, how can I best support you in this, Ms. Fox?"

Because ultimately, that's what Schmoe wanted to do. That was his job as a professor, after all.

It didn't matter how big or how loud Ms. Turov's knock was because Finneas Schmoe was not inside his office. Actually, he was making his way towards his office just now, with a letter in hand and a decision that was still cause for deliberation.

Seeing Ms. Turov, Finneas quickly recovered from his stress-riddled posture to a more welcoming stance. "Er, hullo!" He chirped, stepping up behind her. "Are you, er, h-here to see me?" Or did she like admiring doors? Because he was not one to judge. Whoever did the staining of this one, did a right good job of it. Might good door, it was! But er, if she did want to have a chat... then that was alright too!

It was a hard question that Schmoe was asking. Ash, to be honest, did not expect anyone to support her in anything. She kinda just thought she’d have to do it alone... so she took a long sip of cocoa while she thought. “Keep being Schmoe. Like, keep trying to fix the tech lounge. I can help with that. And also try to be you. Not like gloomy after-the-war Schmoe, but regular Schmoe who wears bold outfits and carries around muggle stuff and spills drinks.” She had changed. Everyone changed. She didn’t want Schmoe to change very much. Ash wanted to preserve the happiness of anyone who still had any left.

Schmoe tried to sip his tea, but it was far too hot to drink at the moment. YiKeS. As it were, he gave Ms. Fox his undivided attention, ready to take note of what she said and put it into action. Though, er, her answer was, er, it was surprisingly, actually.

And very touching. Finneas offered her a small smile, shifting around in his seat. "Duly noted, Ms. Fox." And in true Schmoe fashion, he punctuated it with a salute. "I'll, er, I'll certainly do my best to keep being Schmoe." Not the after-the-war one, though that would be difficult to shake. He would try though, especially if it could be of any help to Ashley.

Ash thought it would be a sort of small victory if Schmoe kept being his regular self. Some symbol that they had won the war. What were they even fighting for if everyone was gonna be sad all the time? There wouldn’t be any point. Even Ash had fun. Sometimes. Not very often. But sometimes. And anyway, if fighting meant that she got to be happy for one day a week, that was better than not fighting and never being happy.

Ash laughed. She had two laughs that she used regularly. One of them was a sort of sharp breath, cold and unsurprised. The other one was bubbly, not necessarily happy but definitely amused. She was using the second one right now. Why was Schmoe saluting her? Since when was she deserving of respect... Who cared? This was funny. Ash saluted back. She was glad that Schmoe hadn’t changed too much. Imagine if he suddenly started being Serious and suspicious and sad. That would be sad. Or maybe he really had changed, and was just good at hiding it. But Ash tried to not think about that.

“I guess I should probably go soon, or whatever.” Go where? To do what? Honestly, she would probably just sleep. Or paint. Or daydream. Something fun. Ash couldn’t exactly tell Schmoe to be happy sometimes if she was unable to do it herself.

Laughter was a sign that maybe something was going right. Or, er, perhaps that things would be going right eventually. Being a Hufflepuff, Finneas knew the importance of patience.

He chuckled in response to her own salute, shifting a little in his seat. "You're welcome to stay here as long as you like, Ms. Fox," he bobbed his head. "But, er, I'm sure you have plenty to do, so I won't keep you."

Violet knocked on the office door of Professor Shhmoe and hoped he would answer. He had said she could talk to him after class. After reviewing in her mind the best member of the faculty or staff to approach, she'd picked him to approach about this (lucky Schmoe!)
