| | Map of Argyllshire Hanging in a spot on the second floor is a framed map of Argyllshire. This old, out-dated map features the Scottish county and surrounding areas before they were abolished in 1975. It isn't clear why the map was originally hung up at Hogwarts and many still don't understand why it is still featured in the second-floor corridor today. If anything, it makes for a good conversation starter or an easy-to-find place to meet up with someone.
Even though the map's purpose at Hogwarts isn't clear, you might find looking at it worth your while anyway. The map reflects the weather that is occurring outside -- if it is raining, a thick and dark mass will cloud the map until it clears; the landscape of the map will turn green when bright and sunny; during autumn the landscape changes colour; and the map gradually starts to turn white and freezes the rivers, lakes, and lochs on the map when snow begins to fall outside. When it is nighttime, the colours on the map dim except for where the towns are. Pretty cool, right?

Usually one only looked at a map when they were lost, but she was looking at this map because it showed the weather. She wondered if this meant wizards didn't need meteorologists to predict the weather. Or were there wizards meteorologists who had made this map?
And could they predict the weather with magic? Or was that divination? Were magical weatherpeople just seers?
She was looking very closely at the map in order to read all the names of the towns and bodies of water. A breeze or a small bump from a clumsy passerby would definitely be enough to bonk her nose against one of the lochs on the map.

She was looking very closely at the map in order to read all the names of the towns and bodies of water. A breeze or a small bump from a clumsy passerby would definitely be enough to bonk her nose against one of the lochs on the map. Lisa was busy doing research on sleeping and polyjuice potions. With her nose stuck literally very close to a textbook, she walked down the second floor corridor as she made small notes in the textbook of what to go pick up with her pencil. She had recently started up this habit of walking around the corridors with a book when studying. It just helped her focus better than in the library because every time she was in the library, she’d get distracted by the Restricted section and the plotting that Daniel, Alfred, and her were doing. The plotting just made her even more excited so she tried to limit her trips to the library.
Taking a pause from her “studying”, she stopped in her tracks and spotted Margaret down the corridor very, very close to what looked like a .... map? She hugged the textbook closer to her chest and wandered down the corridor until she was close enough to talk with her. “ Hi! You look super focused.... Whatcha doing? Finding a secret treasure?” she asked with her eyebrows raised.

Which wasn't true at all. It was just the first year, though, so she grinned. "No, no treasure," she said with a little laugh. "This map shows the weather!" She stood aside so Lisa could see.
Lisa was Muggleborn, right? Surely she'd appreciate how cool it was to have a map that updated itself, without any need for meteorologists who were frequently wrong. |

…..Oh.
Darn.
Lisa pursed her lips a little disappointed that there was no treasure. She then proceeded to arch her eyebrows in confusion about what Mamie was referring too. Wait. Say that one more time. What had she just shared with her? A map that showed the weather… impossible!!
She blinked, reprocessing what Mamie had shared with her. A MAP that showed the weather? How perfectly… bizarre. Her eyes glanced to the map in front of her and Mamie was right. It was showing the current weather outside which was cool with a winter breeze and gray.
“ WOW! That’s so cool!”
Lisa turned to Mamie. “ How accurate do you think it is?” she asked tilting her head. It seemed fairly accurate.

Merlin, she had forgotten how cool magic was! She almost wished she was a first year again, so she could just...forget all the horrible things magic could be used for. And just see the amazement at how much easier it could make life, at how...magical it all could be.
She shrugged, looking back at the map. "I think it's correct, at least here. Maybe the edges are less accurate??" After all, did distance matter to a...spell? Charm? Whatever had been done to this map? "I've never seen it be wrong for the weather at Hogwarts." |

Whatever had been done to this map? "I've never seen it be wrong for the weather at Hogwarts." Lisa also turned back to the map when Mamie did. She nodded at the older girl’s thoughtful observation. Maybe the edges were inaccurate? That could be a possibility “ So you’re saying that there’s a weather spell effectiveness radius potentially?” she mused, titling her head to the left and stroking her imaginary beard. “ Is this the centre?”
She nodded after Mamie’s next statement about her not seeing the map ever being wrong. “ So it HAS to be right. I’m sure if the weather people knew this existed that would make their job much more easier.” Lisa found weather like horoscopes - up to interpretation in the Muggle world and there wasn’t much concrete science (or maybe there was?) associated with it.
“ Does Hogwarts have a radio show? Cause we could have our own weather section with this..” she mused with a scheming smile on her lips. The clocks were turning in her mind and she was getting excited.

“Does Hogwarts have a radio show? Cause we could have our own weather section with this..” she mused with a scheming smile on her lips. The clocks were turning in her mind and she was getting excited. A...weather spell effectiveness radius. Margaret stared hard at the map while she tried to process the first year's...summary? Of what she'd said?? Weather spell...was clearly referring to whatever spell the map was using to show them the weather. Effectiveness...like whether the weather was right? And radius...wasn't that like, a circle? Margaret put her hand up to rest on her cheek so Lisa couldn't see how confused she was. "...Yes." She finally replied, trying her darnedest not to make the yes into a question. "I think the WWN and Daily Prophet weather people must use the same thing," she said, nodding. Maybe? She had never actually checked the WWN or Daily Prophet for a weather report...or forecast. When she was at Hogwarts, she had...the map. And when she was home...Muggle weather predictions, which were...usually right. Her Pa had tried to explain why they were wrong sometimes...something about blah blah complicated, blah blah butterflies, blah blah human interaction. She didn't always listen when her father talked science (or science fiction). "I don't know, uh...last year was...weird, and I was just trying to keep up with school my first year," she admitted. Had there even been radios around last term, or had they been confiscated with the mirrors? She'd never had a radio, so she hadn't noticed. "Do you think being a radio weather person is something you'd like doing?" She thought it sounded horrible, personally. |

She did wonder ever so briefly what she would say to her question and then she got an answer. She nodded. Of course Lisa Nam’s hypothesis was directionally right. She took Mamie’s agreement as an indication that she, herself, was very bright.
Multiple sources using the same map? “ Wait. You mean this map? They use this map at Hogwarts or do they have the same technolo- magic at their location?”
When Mamie mentioned last year, Lisa paused. She was hoping to hear more but then she stopped. No one talked about last year and she hit her lip. “ Mamie… last year sounded tough,” she said as she dug her fingernails into her arm because she was trying her hardest not to ask about what happened last year. She still didn’t have the big picture. She had breadcrumbs here and there but not the full loaf…. The question she asked next distracted her. Uh… did she look like someone who liked to talk in several degrees of error? She shook her head. “ Uhhhh no… but i think running a radio show could be an interesting business? And I like money, business, and pranking. Y’know the hustle.”
Le shrug.
Beat.
“ Aaaaand… What about you?”

“Aaaaand… What about you?” Margaret blinked. "No, same magic," she clarified. "Probably a bigger map, or multiple maps? Because they care about more places." Right? She didn't know. She was making things up and hoping Lisa was enough younger that she wouldn't catch on for...a year or two. Or maybe Mamie was making things up that were actually right. WHO KNEW?
She nodded at Lisa's comment. Last year was rough. She did not want to think about it, much less talk about it. Andd Lisa was very bright, given the kid didn't press the subject and just switched back to the weather. "Yeah...I...would not...want to talk on the radio," she said, very slowly. Not when she just barely managed to get through her classes without stuttering on the regular. Talking that much, on a radio? It would make her too nervous. She didn't want that. "What sort of pranking?" Hopefully not anything that would get Lisa into trouble. She seemed like a nice kid, and she didn't want her to get detention or anything. |
