The sky is overcast and the weather is drizzly with the kind of inconsistent rain that can't seem to make up its mind whether or not it wants to fall, or how heavily. About thirty feet above the ground, a giant bouncy net is stretched across almost the entire Training Area, leaving some room to fly up and around it to get to the sky above. Again, there are spare brooms here for those who forget to bring or borrow their own - Kamran has been having quiet words with those who make a habit out of it.
The bread is here too, in a levitating basket off to the side. The basket is unlabelled and Kamran makes no reference to it - it's been present in every lesson since the presence of bread was made mandatory, you know what's in there by now. You can take some if you wish, but be sure to replace the lid once you have some. To keep it fresh. And protected from the rain. Yes. Certainly not a subtle effort to keep it out of sight, out of mind, and out of mouth and nose for his lesson.
Professor Kazmi is stood at the usual place on the edge of the area, waiting for the students to arrive. As you approach, Kamran greets you with a "Think fast," or a "Heads up," and suddenly tosses a ball - about tennis-ball-size or so, appearing as though out of thin air - your way. Whether the ball is caught, or fumbled and needs to be retrieved, he follows up with, "Throw it back to me."

Falling was fun sometimes. But only sometimes. Just not when it involved a catastrophic meeting with the ground. Those were not so fun and Kins would appreciate avoiding those kinds of meetings if they could.
Not learning from her previous attempt at answering a question with her mouthful, Kins took another bite of her banana bread and raised her hand. Maybe she ought to go for a round of seconds before Mr. Kazmi made them mount their brooms. There's no way she could eat bread and fly at the same time. That's probably where the catastrophic meetings came in. See? Super responsible.
Fortunately she had finished chewing by the time it was her turn to contribute and she answered right away. "Do they make special helmets for flying?" Those could help with catastrophic meetings.

"If you're not very good at flying" (like her, Violet thought, but didn't say out loud), "then it might be a good idea to avoid flying alone. Go with a partner or friends, so you'll have help in case you run into trouble."
How to prevent a fall? That was easy, Mamie thought. Just don't let go of your broom. She raised her hand. "You could wear gloves with sticky fingers to help you not let go of your broom accidentally," she said.
And Ash's answer...was a really good answer, she thought. She started to give the other third year a big thumbs up, then remembered... Ash didn't care anymore. So...she redirected her thumbs up to Violet, instead. Was it a little awkward to give a thumbs up to someone she didn't know well? FOR SURE. But she agreed with the fourth year. Flying with a friend was more fun anyway!!

It sounded like something her mum would say. Or probably had said at some point, even if Ivy couldn't remember off the top of her head. That saying of getting back on the horse after a fall. She used to ride her mum's miniature horses when she was reeeeally little, and she was sure she'd fallen off them at least a few times when she'd first started riding. But she also couldn't remember ever being afraid of them, and maybe that was 'cause of her mum.
It was quite a bit different than flying, of course, but similar concept anyway.
As for ways to prevent falling? "I guess you could use a Sticking Charm," she began, raising her hand, "to stick yourself to your broom, so you can't fall off no matter what." Assuming the person trusted their ability to cast charms. "Just a regular charm though, not the Permanent Sticking Charm." Unless someone wanted to walk around stuck to a broom forever. But she was pretty sure no one would want that.

Victoria didn't think she was being RUDE to Mamie at all, pfft. If she was being rude, the world would know.
But people were giving some really off the charts answers. Sticking charms? Potions? She tried not to make judgmental faces, though, since she didn't have any better ideas, either.
Think, think, think.
"But a sticking charm won't help if your brooooooom goes FLYING! It might actually HURT you!" she said suddenly, not able to hold it in any longer. "Maybe when you fall, you can train your body to fall a certain way. Like, everyone knows falling on your bum is the best place since it is basically our ALL NATURAL CUSHION!" she smiled brightly. She didn't have MUCH cushion to speak of, but she supposed it was better than nothing.

The Snakette eyes Kazmi. Was he trying not to laugh at her? For she saw those twitchy lips, Professor. Yes, she did. Regardless if that happened to be the reason for the twitching, she bobbed her head. Kazmi’s words helped put her to ease. Yes, she’d continue to do her best to avoid panicking around obstacles of any form.
There were some very interesting answers being given but for some reason, Claudine’s brain kept zoning in on the ‘minimising the danger’ aspect of what seemed to be today’s topic. “The Cushioning Charm can help ease the effects of a fall,’’ the girl said, wiggling the fingers of her raised hand.

Heath wasn't sure whether or not his answer to the last question made sense - mainly he was just trying not to be repetitive - but he was pleased that Professor Kazmi seemed to follow his logic. He listened carefully as the lesson moved on. So they were talking about falling… Well, now the net sort made sense, but he still had no idea how the balls from earlier tied into things. Oh well, he supposed all would be revealed soon enough!
For now. he focused on the next question. Ways to prevent a fall or to mitigate injury once a fall has already happened? The first thoughts that popped into his head were spells like the slowing charm and the cushioning charm, but he couldn't think of anything else to say about those spells that his classmates hadn't already. As he thought about those two spells, an idea occurred to him. What if instead of using a spell to create an invisible cushion over the ground, one used Spongify to soften it? Would that work to prevent injury? It stood to reason that it might, but it sounded out there… maybe a little too much so. Not feeling particularly confident in that answer, Heath kept quiet for now.

Lia listened quietly and took mental notes to everything before said, which was a lot in the the eyes of the twelve year old. So much being said and she was standing here in a position where it was a bit tough to take proper notes. Why that always seemed to happen during these types of lessons, she didn't know but it really bugged her. All she could really do was listen intently for now and write everything done the moment she could after class.
All of these questions were starting to concern the second year. Why would people avoid flying. How to prevent falling. Minimizing danger or stopping a fall. Were they going to be falling today? Was that what the net was for? Honestly she didn't need any help with falling.. she had that down pact. She could fall perfectly fine all on her own, thank you very much. No help was needed.
She raised her hand though. "If you're a beginner flier you can stay low to the ground and away from anything that you could crash into." That way if you did fall you wouldn't be falling very far.

Oh no. He did not like where this was going. From the sound of it they were going to have to intentionally fall off their brooms today. Survival instincts did not make that easy. Despite being a Gryffindor, Devin still had at least some self-preservation instincts.
Devin pointed to the net above them. ”This net is, I assume, one way to minimize damage from a fall. A net is a good solution to prevent injuries in controlled environments like this class where there are lots of people who might not be experienced fliers and might be at higher risk of falling, but it’s not a practical solution for someone who is traveling by broomstick because the whole world isn’t surrounded by a giant safety net.” The idea of a giant net around the world was kind of funny. As for how to avoid falling off in the first place, well, his answer would be to just not be on a broom in the first place but he didn’t think that was the answer the professor was looking for.
Kamran glanced up, making a non-committal gesture of the head. "It's a learning tool, you're right about that; you'd be hard-pressed to find a flying situation where there's a net below, outside of the learning environment." Really, it would make things dull. Charmed grounds were usually about as far as Kamran was willing to go, and that was because he'd spent a lot of time teaching teenagers who simply did not recognise danger half the time. Personally, he'd always preferred flying when the ground beneath was not charmed to within an inch of its life, but he had long since reached emotional maturity. "My aim is to get you all to a point where you're not relying on nets or charmed surfaces, as it's rare you'll be flying over these outside of school. But it's necessary today." Spoilers.

If people were mean to them, her response would be quite different.
Okay, so this next question was pretty safe. It wasn't asking about her personally, so people were unlikely to laugh at her or call her crazy when she answered. "To prevent falling, I guess you should know your skill level. Like if you are super new to flying, it wouldn't make sense for you to fly in bad weather." To be completely honest, she didn't really know how to minimize the danger. She'd been living as a muggle for 11 years, and she missed a whole year of flying. Her approach to falling was 'hope for the best and try to hit the ground with your arms and not your head.' She didn't think Kazmi was looking for that. And people would laugh if she said that answer, even though it wasn't funny and she wasn't joking. So she'd just... keep it to herself.
This time, when she looked into the distance like her mind was far away in some other place, it was real and not a facade.
"Absolutely. Thank you, Miss Fox." She'd touched on exactly why they were here, after all. The whole point of Kamran's job. "An awareness of your abilities mean you're less likely to get into a situation that's out of your depth." Not to mention it would lead to knowing how to improve their abilities, which led to confidence, which meant less falling to begin with. Confidence was key.

“There is a spell, The Slowing Charm, that can prevent a fall from being too dangerous.” It required quick thinking, of course. Remy did a lot of reading about spells like these, they all sounded so cool!
The first to start veering towards the destination of this lesson. "Excellent, Miss Gaeltheos. Arresto Momentum is really an invaluable spell for flying." Also in general, depending on how dangerous a life a person tended to lead. Regardless, one to know. "It will take the velocity out of a fall, if you time it right."
They'd come back to this shortly.

This child and the bread. Kamran was not concerned, but he was a little unsure. A little doubtful. A little more likely to keep an eye on James to make sure her reflexes were in good order as the lesson went on. There were suspicions, that was all, nothing major, but flying was not the best time to be zen.
He was unsurprised when she answered his question with a question. "They do," Kamran replied, with a nod. "There are Quidditch helmets, which you might have seen players wear. Beyond that, general flying helmets have been on the market for some time too. If you can think of it, someone's probably tried to corner the market for it." And sports gear was one of the big earners. Giant price tags were seldom questioned, especially if the buyer thought it guaranteed their safety and perceived professionalism. "Safety gear, then. Good, Miss James."

[Kamran was ready to be unimpressed with this at first, but only for about a half a second, when he thought Blackthorne was going to stop after the words 'avoid flying'. While true, it was not what he wanted to hear.
Luckily, that wasn't an issue, and when the rest of the answer came, he approved. "Yes, Miss Blackthorne. This links back to what Miss Fox said about knowing your skill level too." Knowing one's limits, etc, etc. "Flying alone when you're not confident or know that you're likely to run into problems would be extremely unwise." Sometimes unavoidable, but still.

This answer was slightly more out of the box. Kamran nodded.
"I'd say so, Miss Turov. Provided the gloves are not too sticky, and as long as they help more than they hinder." He paused, thought for a moment. "Also worth noting that such an item is likely to be banned from sporting events, especially those that involve catching a ball, as they give the individual an unfair advantage. But in general flying, something like that could be beneficial."

I would even say that gripping charms are better than sticking charms. In some situations it might be necessary to part ways with the broom, and if you were stuck to it, you may run into issues. That's unlikely to be an issue in my class, however." Even so. Paid to be prepared.

That point reiterated by Gellar over here. Kamran gave her a small nod, and then another to the rest of her answer. "Very good, yes, and something we'll soon cover." Not today, but soon. "As with anything, the context of the fall will make a difference on the best way to fall safely. For instance, from a great height on a broom, that might not be the best method. At a certain point, it's less about cushioning and more about absorbing impact by bending your joints, and protecting the spine."
Pratfalling from one hundred feet was not likely to offer such protection. But otherwise, she had the right of it.

Another one who was fairly on the money regarding Kamran's plans for the day. He nodded once again. "Precisely, yes. In fact, as the Training Area here is a learning environment, the ground is charmed to allow more give if and when an high velocity impact were to happen. I prefer that none of you learn to rely on this, and instead learn to react quickly." He'd been through all this, but it was worth saying again. "Thank you, Miss Blaze."

She raised her hand though. "If you're a beginner flier you can stay low to the ground and away from anything that you could crash into." That way if you did fall you wouldn't be falling very far.
"Good, yes. I encourage beginners, and those still working on confidence, to start flying low and gradually build their height," Kamran said with a nod, unfolding and refolding his arms across his chest. "Aside from skill level, when you're starting out with flying there can be a lot to think about, and awareness of incoming obstacles can suffer. Better to work on that when you're still flying low to the ground."
Better for some, at least. Some flyers just nose-dived right into it, and Kamran couldn't begrudge anyone that. One way or another, they would learn.
Anyone else? No? Moving on, then. Kamran glanced up at the sky as it darkened slightly; the rain had stopped again, but the clouds suggested it would not stay like that for long.
Back to the students. "Let's think specifically about the fall itself. Some of you mentioned spells. The Slowing Charm, Summoning your broom back to you, Softening or Cushioning Charms on the ground, these are all good strategies to use once you've already fallen. Flying with a wand is necessary for this, and it's important that you are confident in the spell you attempt, because there are limited chances. Non-verbals are quicker and will give you more time and opportunity, but are also more advanced, and especially difficult in a stressful situation." With all that delightful information out in the open, it was time to get flying.
"Today, we're going to focus on these magical options for what to do when you can't prevent yourself falling, but aren't readily willing to hit the ground, and are able to do something about it. I won't be teaching you the spells themselves-" Not his division, they were all spells in Peralta's, or maybe Trent's, curriculum. "-but working on your reactions and technique, get you in a position where you are prepared to think quickly. First thing's first, let's get warmed up. Everyone mount your brooms, and get into the air."
Kamran grabbed his own broom, mounted up, and hovered a dozen feet above the ground, waiting for the students to do the same while he continued his instructions, raising his voice further to reach them all.
"For the next ten minutes, you're going to free-fly around the training area, but stay below the net for now. I'll be releasing a batch of enchanted foam balls. These will fly around and at you, not intended to injure or unseat, but to try and catch you off guard. Getting hit may sting a little, is all." There were plenty more ways they could cause problems, but Kamran was not even going to go there right now. They'd cross that bridge if they came to it. "Fly around at whatever speed you like, have fun with it, but be mindful of others. Weave in and out of each other, and try to avoid or catch the balls if they come your way. If you catch one, release it or throw it at someone else. Shouting a warning in advance is not necessary unless you're throwing it from close range, in which case, it should not have much force behind it. This is just a warm up, the aim is simply to practice thinking quickly while other things are happening around you, and while staying focused on flying. I won't tolerate any spitefulness." Ditto regarding collisions.
Not that Kamran really thought he had too much to worry about with this batch of students. Still. You never know.
"I'll be flying around keeping an eye on things. If you're not comfortable with this activity or cannot partake for any reason, you may fly around the perimeter of the area or remain on the ground - the safe zones - and watch, and we'll talk later. Everyone else..." Kamran blew his whistle. The cue to get started. He'd wait a couple of minutes for them all to get going, then send the balls out.
OOC: Activity is up - apologies this post is later than billed, and possibly awkward to read, I had a procedure this morning and did not judge timings/wakefulness very well. Kamran is here to answer questions and I'll be checking in and posting.
- Your character should stay below the net suspended above
- If they choose to sit out or fly around the perimeter instead, nothing should fly at them (throwing something at a student in the safe zones will mean a Very Unhappy Kamran)
- As for the balls zooming around, you can RP these for yourselves - go ahead and assume they've been released already
- If your character throws a ball at another, don't RP the outcome of the action, leave that to the other RPer to decide
- Ultimately it's just a simple warm up; all your characters are doing right now is flying around, avoiding being hit, or catching the balls and maybe throwing them at each other (NiCeLY)
If any of this is unclear, send me a VM or a PM and I'll try to clear things up asap. The lesson will move on no less than 72 hours from the time of this post.

Kazmi was slowly becoming one of those professors who Claudine believed that she could trust. It was just a vibe she picked up now that she’d grown accustomed to his presence. If he really could be trusted, she just hoped he didn’t leave Hogwarts; at least until she graduated. Claudine nodded, a confirmation that she understood what he was saying. “You’re welcome, professor.’’
At the mention of non verbal spells, Claudine automatically glanced at Heath. He was trying to teach her to master them but she dejectedly admitted that she was rubbish with nonverbals. Kazmi’s techniques would definitely come in handy should she need them. The Snakette grabbed the borrowed School broom and got into the air with no problem.
Was she flying below the net? Yes. Claudine wasn’t going at breakneck speed. It could be described as her cruising. She wasn’t even bothering to keep an eye out for the balls. What would be the point if Kazmi wanted to catch them off guard? So, for now, Claudine was simply enjoying the bit of breeze hitting her face.

Lisa had nodded along to SHOW that she was paying attention. Yes, active listening. She even SHUDDERED when V mentioned a sticking charm. Oh yes, that had been a visit to the Hospital Wing with Atlas Flamsteed. How events had turned rather quickly. First holding hands (this brought a blush to her cheeks and weird tummy feelings) and then they couldn’t unstick their hands!!!
But they had both survived to tell the tale.
Lisa was improving at stopping. Falling seemed scarier. After all, you are hurling yourself towards the grounds and potentially… KA BOOM! CRASSSSHING into the ground. She winced. Ouch. It sounded painful. She grabbed her right arm with her left and rubbed it gently as she listened. It was a habit to hide her nerves… She needed to ask Jasper about this after class and get more pointers.
After the instruction was given, she whipped her head around and glanced from side to side. Well… Was anyone not going to do the activity? She eyed the older students. She particularly didn’t want to do it buuut she didn’t want to be the only one sitting out. That was lame! Lisa had always been a victim of peer pressure- it was quite effective. They had to go up and fly. She could lift off the ground. Loosely gripping the broomstick, she willed herself off of the ground slowly and floated. Alright. No passing the net. She had no intention of passing it.
For right now, she’d stay at a nice slow pace which any highway driver would despise because she certainly was being the driver that went ten below the suggested speed limit. Her eyes were peeled for the balls. She slowly moved her way out of their direction before flying towards Claudine. “Hi!” she called out, raising her hand up into the air to wave and almost losing her balance. Maybe she’d wait on waving.

Lia smiled lightly as she listened as she listened to the instructions for the warm-up activity. Try not to crash or get hit with any of the foam balls that would be flying around. This was either going to be epic or a complete disaster. Which one could only be determined once she was up in the air.
It didn't matter to her what anyone else chose to do. If they wanted to sit out they could. She wasn't going to. Flying wasn't her favorite thing in the world and she wasn't great at it but it beat sitting around doing nothing. The view from up off the ground was indescribable. How the wind felt against her face. It was a whole new type of adventure. One she wasn't going to pass up today.
So the moment that whistle blew, Dahlia mounted her broom and kicked off firmly. Remaining below the netting, she flew around keeping the foam balls in her sight as best she could as well as anyone else flying around. For now she was simply keeping at relaxing speed, nothing at all fancy. All she was doing was getting a feel for the activity.

V smiled at the professor's response to HER response. Really, flying was just her favorite. Chill. But at the mention of magic maaaaybe coming into play, Victoria clenched up.
She would be terrible at anything magic related, she just KNEW it. Rubbing her elbow nervously, she listened to the instructions, or trying to. Normally she would tune things out that were too long or boring on purpose - but right now, her brain wouldn't stop telling her how much she would do poorly if they had to do a spell FROM ATOP A BROOM.
But the instructions didn't seem to include that, now that V was tuning in at the end of Kazmi's talking. The foam balls didn't look that hard, so she was glad about that. The idea of humming one at Daniel did cross her mind, but she didn't want to get in trouble today. So if she stayed away from the Hufflepuff, she thought she'd be able to resist that temptation.
Hopping onto her broom, she whizzed as quickly as she could after Lisa, immediately getting a light hit from a ball on her elbow. "LIIISAAA! Claudine!" she said loudly, smiling and waving as she flew. "HIIII!" and that's all she said before getting bopped on top the head with another ball. When she TRIED to catch it, she just fumbled and nearly lost control of her broom, so she SQUEAKED and felt her hands clench around the wood hard.
WELP.
She was NOT going to try that again.

So far, there were no balls heading her way though Claudine knew that they were released. Yes, she could see a few zooming around. Unbothered, she continued zooming about, mainly enjoying the breeze in her face. Good thing that she had tied her hair up otherwise it would have been such a bother. That’s when she saw little Lisa heading her way. “Hi, L-” she started to say. Woah. Claudine’s heart did a bit of a flip-flop when it seemed that Lisa would have fallen. “Better keep those hands on the broom,” Claudine called.
“Hi, V!’’ Only… Violet seemed to have brought the balls this way? The sixth year suddenly was attacked by one directly on her nose. “OW!’’ That was more of a reflex of being startled than an expression of pain. Then there was another heading for her forehead. Instinctively, she reached up and grabbed it with her right hand. “Violet, the balls followed up here!’’ Laughing, she gently tossed the ball to Lisa.

Lisa gave a half smile to Claudine and gripped her broom a little more tightly after her near fall. “Yeah probably a good idea,” she chuckled before focusing on her balance. Before she could ask Claudine for some tips, V had appeared with some more balls. She winced as she saw the ball hit her friend and then heard the squeak. Oh dear MERLIN!
“You okay?” she asked as she reached her hands out to catch the ball. She missed the ball but maintained her balance this time.
Claudine’s catch was so graceful. “How did you do that?”
She blinked at V too. “Your name is Violet?” She had thought it was something else. She flushed. Perhaps she was wrong.
YES. Flying time. And baby bludgers? Mamie had...not completely listened to instructions. She was a little distracted. But she had heard... stay below the net. And basically, play dodgeball?
That was the gist of it, right?
She mounted her broom and kicked off, meandering through the air until she was just below the net. Out of the way. But, uh, a fluffy bludger followed her, so she caught it and tossed it toward Dahlia.

One full lap around was taken before any speed was gained. Then it was only enough to have a little bit of fun with flying around. Nothing that would make it too hard to stop should anyone suddenly cross paths with her.
Lia flew in a somewhat weaving pattern around the pitch, her blue eyes following one of the foam balls while trying to keep away from all of the others. It was as if she was playing Seeker and Dodgeball at the very same time. Up and down, left and right, zig-zagging here and there across the pitch. "Hiya, Margaret!" she called out with a grin spotting the slightly older Hufflepuff flying not to far from her.
Huh?!
Dahlia lost sight of the foam ball she had been following when she saw the one Mamie tossed her way. "I got it!" All she needed to do was go a tiny bit faster, reach forward and.. GOT IT! "Back to you!" Calling out a warning, she tossed the ball back to Margaret so she could get both of her hands back on the broom before she lost her balance or something.

After NEARLY DYING V was glad she hadn't, and she continued to follow Lisa and Claudine. Only she looked AGHAST at being called VIOLET. Victoria was NOT VIOLET. Her eyebrows FURRRRROWED and she GLARED at Claudine, then snapped at Lisa - "NO. My name is VICTORIA, remember?!" How could her best friend not know her real name? She ALWAYS introduced herself as Victoria, but you can call me V!
She was irritated, now.
And there were more foam balls, as Claudine had said, so Lisa flew a little higher than her and managed snag one of the ones NOT headed right at her. She could catch if it wasn't being thrown at her - wonderful! - and THREW it right at Claudine. Angrily.
Annoyedly!

Flying helmets were not something Kinsay was interested in. She didn't want to be extra bulky and she trusted her ability to fly, which was convenient because she didn't trust her ability to cast safety spells. Thankfully she wouldn't need them. Hopefully.
After having finished her bread, she wiped her hands on her trousers before mounting her broom. No sticky hands for the KinzKid, Professor! Following the instructions proper (she could do that sometimes), Kins set off flying around the training area (below the net!!!). It was just warm up, so she didn't overexert herself, but she did try weaving her way around everyone else, as suggested. It was more challenging that way. Plus, it helped her avoid all the balls.
......... Except for when she flew right past Claudine, just in time to take the direct hit from that first year (V). "Meeeep!"
There wasn't enough time to dodge it, so she took the hit straight to her gut. And despite the fact that it didn't actually hurt, Kins still glared in V's general direction. As one does. What was that for?!

The Gryffindor beamed (at herself) showing satisfaction with her answer she had given. She was getting good at this whole class thing, but wahoo, her favourite part, they were about to take off into the air.
Welp, this task sounded a little… terrifying.
Remy waited for others to take off before taking the plunge herself, knowing that she’d only miss out if she decided not to get up there. The professor’s description of how much the balls could hurt you was… yeah, terrifying.
Her feet lifted off the ground and she reached a height, just below the net. Her eyes darted left, right and centre towards the balls flying all over the place. She noticed a few familiar faces getting hit/almost hit. She was terrified but before she could try and hide… a ball was heading straight for her.
Her natural instinct was NOT to catch it, especially when her brain as not letting her take her hands off her broom, so she ducked instead. Amazingly, Remy managed to hoist her broom up before hitting the ground. Was… was that SKILL???

Claudine didn’t think her catch was graceful at all. She thought of it as a lucky, fumbly catch. Sort of like Ron Weasley kicking the Quaffle away from the goalposts with his foot when he almost fell off his broom. She shrugged at Lisa. “Luck,’’ she admitted. “Better keep your eyes peeled, Lisa. You don’t want to get knocked in the head.” Even though it wouldn’t really hurt.
Woah. Did VICTORIA have anger issues? Calling the first year that particular name had been a complete slip of the tongue. After all, there was a Violet in Slytherin House. Claudine rolled her eyes but being who she was, made no effort to clear up her mistake. “Revenge for telling me that my name is an old lady’s name earlier in the term,’’ the sixth year called coolly. Inside, she was dying with laughter and amusement. Claudine continued cruising, motioning at Lisa to follow her. Perhaps they could dodge those balls togeth-
Oooh!Kinsay took a hit with that one meant for her! The third year seemed to be okay though, and Claudine really appreciated the glare Kinsay threw to VICTORIA.

She flashed a big smile at Claudine as she mentioned it was luck and heeded the Slytherin’s advice. She was about to ask a question when Victoria happened.
For the record, Lisa had KNOWN V’s name was Victoria but hadn’t wanted to be RUDE or made Claudine feel uncomfortable. Also mistakes happened….
And then V was just plain RUDE to CLAUDINE. And even threw something at her.
If this had been the first time that Lisa had witnessed V freaking out or being loud in general, she would have winced. The outburst didn’t phase her. It was an expected reaction from V. She turned to Claudine after the outburst and shrugged before seeing a ball hurling towards Claudine. She GASPED (gosh she was gasping a lot these days) as she was surprised that V would throw something at Claudine. If Claudine had been Daniel, then it would have been inevitable that she would have been hit or knocked off the broom.
Poor Kinsay took the hit. She had just been minding her own business and SMACK.
“V! That wasn’t nice. People make mistakes!” she called out, wanting to throw a ball directly at her friend for throwing a tantrum but then she’d be stooping to her level. She dropped the ball that she had in her hand.

Heath listened intently to everything Professor Kazmi had to say. Like DADA, this was a class where things could go very wrong if one didn’t pay attention, and he wanted to do all he could to avoid that! Out of the corner of his eye, he caught Claudine’s glance. He still couldn't believe she wanted him to teach her nonverbals, despite the fact that he was still learning himself. Wait, they wouldn’t have to do nonverbal spells today, would they? The thought gave him an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. He could do all but the most advanced spells nonverbally, but he didn’t know if he’d be able to do them under duress!
Still nervous about the activity, he mounted his broom, hovering midair just as instructed. Oh… so that explained the balls! He breathed a silent sigh of relief upon hearing they were only dodging balls. That sounded a lot less dangerous than trying to stop oneself from falling with magic. At the sound of the whistle, he took off at a medium pace - fast enough not to be an easy target for the balls whizzing about but still slow enough for him to react in time should anything (or anyone) come at him. For now he was going to focus on avoiding the zooming balls as opposed to throwing them. That seemed a little mean, didn’t it?
He saw a ball coming toward him and swerved to the right… just as he heard Claudine say “OW!” Merlin, was she okay? Momentarily distracted, he turned a fraction of a second too late, and the ball hit him in the side. He gasped, more from surprise than pain, but kept his balance. As he continued dodging and weaving around the balls, he noticed a first year (V) throwing a ball at Claudine. Wow, that throw looked awfully hard… and angry! He quickly reversed course, worried that she might be hurt if that ball hit, but he didn’t get there in time. He approached just in time to see the ball meant for his girlfriend hit Kinsay.
What the Hoth was that about?! He caught a ball headed straight for him, and he had half a mind to throw it at the angry girl. Had it not been for Kazmi’s warning that spitefulness wasn’t tolerated, he definitely would’ve. Instead, he settled for giving the girl a look that said, I'm watching you. “I thought spitefulness wasn’t tolerated,” he mumbled under his breath as sped away, weaving between the balls.

Flying. Violet knew this was coming, but that didn't make it better. She started out keeping to the perimeter, not sure if she was ready to have things flying at her or thrown at her just yet. She had a very bad feeling about a lesson based on falling.
Hearing her name, she turned in time to hear the altercation between Victoria and some other girls, one of them Claudine. She was amused at Claudine's reaction, which she rather approved of. There was no need to get so bent out of shape at being called the wrong name--why, you'd think being called 'Violet' was some kind of an insult. That's what came of using just your first initial all the time.
Making a decision, Violet steered her broom further into the flying area, in the vicinity of the girls in question. If there was going to be a kerfluffle over her name, she figured she might as well be part of it.
As with any activity in any lesson, this could go anywhere, but Kamran liked to think the students were willing to stay on task and on track. He'd introduced the component of throwing the balls, of course, and maybe that wouldn't end so well, but being overcautious and assuming the worst would get them nowhere.
It started off fine. Kamran flew around the perimeter himself, where he was unlikely to get pelted with the foam balls, seeing as he needed to keep an eye on the students. They were improving every day, but that was to be expected from those who stuck with it. Donovan, for example, was making steady progress and doing a good job of not getting out of her depth. Turov as well, though she was always fairly at home on a broom, and he expected this kind of thing to come easily enough to her. Gaeltheos was another making improvements - sure, she hadn't tried to catch the ball that flew at her, but dodging was equally acceptable. The mini-dive that ensued was a good show of how she'd improved her skills; he made a mental note to mention it next time he had the opportunity. Nam was coming along in leaps and bounds, and it seemed as though Blaze was offering her advice too, which was always encouraged.
He had noted some decent flying all around, but soon his attention was drawn elsewhere. Kamran hadn't caught the start of the interaction - he was more focused on watching the flying, not eavesdropping on conversations halfway across the green - but Gellar's exclamation rang through the area, and Kamran still had eyes on her when she threw the ball with such aggression. It clearly wasn't supposed to hit James, but it had, and would have hit Blaze otherwise. The Gryffindor seemed to be okay - these weren't exactly dangerous projectiles - but that made no difference to Kamran.
All in all, it wasn't such a major issue, but he'd been very clear in his instructions. Others were starting to chime in, and Kamran noticed Blackthorne seemed ready to put herself into the situation, and he might have thought Jones would interject too, if he didn't know the boy to be the sort who respected instructions and rules.
Before it could go any further - Gellar was clearly the reactive type - Kamran gave a short blast of his whistle and flew into the midst of the students. "Enough," he called out, his voice ringing around the area, though in projection rather than anger. All who'd sent glares or looks or comments to anyone else received a quick look of warning, but it was the first year he spoke to directly. "Five points from Slytherin, Miss Gellar, and you will stay behind to talk with me after class. I was very clear about what I would not tolerate." And they would discuss it, but not in front of everyone else.
_____
Speaking of, Kamran beckoned them all in, ready to continue this lesson while they all hovered in the air. While he waited for the students to gather, he drew his wand and sent the balls back to the ground, then Summoned a basket from the ground, which zoomed up to hover beside him.
"Good flying, everyone. For this last activity, we'll be putting those reactions to the test." Moving onwards. Also upwards. Some of them were going to hate this, and maybe hate him for it, but that was fine. "As we covered earlier, one way of protecting yourself in a fall is using a spell, either to Summon your broom back to you, or to soften the ground, or slow your descent, plenty of possibilities. To reiterate, I'm not teaching you these spells, you won't even have to cast anything today; we're focusing on technique."
He pointed upwards, towards the next. "You're all going to fly around up above the net, and then fall or bail off your broom. Before you hit the net, draw your wand, and practice a spell that would save you - shout the incantation, and perform the wand movement, same as if you were doing it for real. For this lesson, I have fake wands in this basket so you won't risk damage to your own as you fall. You are focusing on your reaction times, and learning to think fast even while falling. It may take a few tries to adjust to it. Once you've hit the net, bounce out of the way and towards me to collect your broom, and have another go when your next turn comes."
He said it all very matter-of-factly, despite knowing how hesitant some of his students might be about this. In Kamran's experience, sugarcoating the explanation might make any number of them feel like there was something they ought to be anxious about. And there wasn't.
"If you feel confident that you can actually cast a spell to stop your fall, and want to practice, you are welcome to do so, but I'd prefer if you used a spell like Accio or Arresto Momentum so I can see the effects clearly. You'll need to use your own wand to do this, and anyone who chooses to pass on the fake wands should be know that you are taking responsibility for any potential damages." Disclaimer. Bolded, underlined, italicised. Fair warning. Not liable for broken wands. "If you'd like to up the difficulty in other ways, you can experiment with height and speed, or do some more daring flying than you're used to and try to trigger a real fall - this is a controlled environment and the net will be there to catch you. I'll be keeping an eye out as well."
Was that everything? Maybe? Maybe. Probably. "No more than two students flying and falling at a time, and spread apart to avoid any collisions. Be mindful of people waiting their turn, don't be all day about it. I'd like to see everyone fall off their broom at least once."
Hm. Phrasing.
... Never mind. "Collect a fake wand if you need one, then get up there and start falling." He gave another shrill blast of his whistle. Get to it.
OOC: Activity part the second is up. The instructions, to clarify:
- Fly around above the net (it spans almost the entire area, plenty of space), and then fall or bail off the broom
- Before hitting the net, draw a wand (fake wands provided), and practice casting a spell to slow or prevent the fall, use a verbal incantation __- For added difficulty, fly in such a way as to trigger a real fall, or experiment with different heights and speeds __- For added difficulty, they can draw their actual wand and cast a spell for real - if they break it, that's on them
- Bounce off the net if they hit it, and collect their broom from Kamran, who is Summoning them back before they fly away or get damaged (I'll be posting, but feel free to say he handed it over so you're not waiting on me)
- Repeated attempts encouraged; everyone should try once
- There should be no serious injuries, and Kamran will be watching out for any awkward falls, but beyond that have fun with it
- Go ahead and pretend it's your characters turn, no need to wait around
As always, do ask for clarification if anything is unclear. I'll be around. You'll have at least 72 hours for this (I plan to wrap up sometime on 6th July).
