The fourth-floor balcony had by far the most magnificent view over the grounds and the first-year Hufflepuff was glad to have discovered it some time ago during his exploring of the castle. Having finished his homework for the day, Daniel had spent the majority of his remaining free time in the library under the guise that he was there to read. He had been reading but his main focus had been trying to find out how to get into the Restricted Section.

Realizing that he wasn't alone on the balcony, Daniel directed his attention to an older girl standing on her tiptoes at the railing and quietly moved to stand next to her. "What are you looking at?"

She looked over at Daniel while standing on tiptoes. “Everything!’’ came her enthusiastic reply. “I mean, look at it all. So peaceful… so…” The sixth year struggled to find the right word. “Breathtaking.” Yes, she really should have brought her sketchpad.

But enough about her.

“Having a good first year so far, Daniel?” There were some questions she wanted to ask about Minjae too but there was a sense of responsibility that always came over her whenever she saw Daniel. It was as though she wanted to keep him safe from any dangers Hogwarts wanted to manifest and she wanted to do that because of Minjae. Claudine missed him terribly.

Maybe that was all why Claudine wanted to ensure Daniel was not having any difficulty in any way.

Everything...

Daniel shrugged and began softly kicking the railing on the balcony with his feet. "I guess" He said and turned around and leaned against the railing now. So far he had made two friends, Lisa who was in Ravenclaw and Alfie who was in Slytherin and he was currently plotting with them to give the librarian a sleeping potion so that they could sneak into the Restricted Section but uh...Claudine did not need to know unless she knew of a way that could help them out. And an older Slytherin had helped him out once when he had been practising the shield charm. They were nice too.

But Victoria Gellar. Just the THOUGHT of her made him feel annoyed so better not think of her. Oh and Atlas? Did not like him either. "Classes are more difficult than I had thought it would be though"

Claudine didn’t care if Daniel didn’t share her enthusiasm. She understood all too well that everyone felt differently about things. Anyway. “Of course I know you,’’ Claudine replied, eyeing Daniel as though he were being silly. “Why wouldn’t I know you? You’re Minjae’s brother. Well… you’re Daniel.” The sixth year didn’t want him to get the impression that ‘Minjae’s brother’ is all that she knew him as. He was his own person.

She observed him out of the side of his eyes as he scuffed at the railing. Was Daniel not much of a talker in general or was it because he didn’t know her? Claudine reckoned she’d find out soon enough. “Classes are usually like that, especially if you’re new to magic. Truthfully, it doesn’t get easier as you move through the years.” She herself still struggled with certain spells. “Just keep in mind that you’ve got to keep practicing.”

Daniel did not like the way Claudine was looking at him as if he were being silly for asking how she knew him. "Are you a friend of my brother?" he asked as he raised one of his eyebrows. It was funny that some of the persons you disliked at first turned out to be your very good friends. The girl had written once to Minjae, shortly after Daniel had mentioned the nightmares the other boy had been having. Was she offended that Daniel didn’t know her? Not in the least. “My name’s Claudine. Your brother and I never really got along until recently so he probably didn’t ever bother mentioning me.”

Talk about determination, Daniel! “You got there in the end,” the Snakette replied, impressed. She hadn’t the heart to tell him there would be times when some spellwork would take way more than a week or two. “Sure! Let’s see what you got.” The Hufflepuff had Claudine’s full attention.

Lisa had been mulling over her reaction to Jasper and V’s interaction at the Big football tournament. He had said hi to her first. Probably because V was very pretty and had BRIGHT blue eyes. Lisa’s were boring.... Muddy brown coloured in fact. She sighed.

Today, for once, she had wanted to feel pretty so she painted her nails ballet slippers pink. She wanted to be like a lady so she tried to curl her hair but it failed miserably so her hair was as straight as a reed. Not having much success, she walked along the corridors until she reached a secluded area where she could think.

Lisa took a seat, eying her hands, as she thought through those inexplicable reactions. It wasn’t like her to get so green with envy. It was rather silly. She had never been jealous over another friend’s friendship with someone else and it irked her.

Misa was once again accidentally taking the long way. Auggie promised that she'd eventually get the hang of it and know her way around, but, alas, that time had not yet come.

It was a little eerie how empty this hall was.

Relief washed over her as she saw a familiar face. But that quickly got replaced with more eerie because...

"Lisa? Why are you looking at your hands?"

Lisa was pulled from her thoughts by a familiar voice. It belonged to her fellow housemate and name rhyming twin. “Misa… hi,” she spoke glancing up from her hands and pursing her lips. She toyed with making a dramatic reference to a play with a Scottish King in it. Out out damn spot! Life is but a shadow… a player that struts about on stage until it is heard no more… well it went something like that, she mused.

“I…. I don’t know. It was the easiest thing to focus on because I didn’t want to look up and catch someone’s eyes…. I’m upset…” she huffed before releasing a LOUD sigh and then abruptly added. “At myself. I’m jealous…”

It was an ugly word to say aloud.

He was secretly starting to get irritated with his older brother and the Hufflepuff was about to roll his eyes when the Slytherin stunned him with her next set of words. "My brother and you didn't get along at first?" he recited, his eyes seeming to light up as he stared wide-eyed at Claudine. "I like you!" he grinned. "I mean, I don't hate my brother" he loved him "But a lot of people seem to really like him and I'm just..." jealous? perhaps. He let out a sigh as he looked down at his shoes but then looked back up when she wanted to see his spell work.

"OK!" he was quite proud of this spell. He had been practising every day to perfect it but it wasn't as powerful yet as what he wanted it to be. Putting a pillow in a bubble was cute and all but trapping Gellar in one when she was being mean to him again? Priceless!

He bounced lightly on his feet as he took out his wand from his expensive wrist holster and....scratched the back of his head with his free hand. He didn't have anything with him to perform the spell on. "Uh.... do you have something I can use?"

Daniel’s reaction to her words made her laugh. “I like you too, don’t worry.” Claudine amazed herself by hearing herself say those words. Usually, she was much more reserved but she supposed that was an old version of herself. “It was actually my fault that we didn’t get along. I used to call him by a name he didn’t like and it used to irritate him.’’ Not to mention she hadn’t really cared about making friends back then. She chuckled, reminiscing on those times. Claudine also thought that she understood Daniel’s unspoken words. “Hey, I wouldn’t worry. Soon enough, you’ll have a lot of friends too. I can be one of them.”

The Snakette wasn’t about to ruin this moment for Daniel by not being interested in his spellwork. She really was. That was why she felt in her pockets for an object. Hmm. What would be ideal? She held out her findings for Daniel to choose. “It’s not a pillow but I suppose one of these could be used.” In her hands were an unopened pack of dead flies for Sammy, a chocolate frog and an unsharpened pencil.

Misa blinked several times at the younger girl as she explained... vaguely... and... in the longest possible way.

"Upset?" she said, immediately concerned. "Why? What happened?" And, more importantly, what could she do to to make it better?

Wait. Whaaa? That was even more unexpected.

"What are you jealous of?????" ? ? ? ?

But for how long would she like him? Because Daniel tended to make people second-guess their friendship with him. The last person had been Jasper who had confronted him in the dormitory about V. It had been a stupid fight but Daniel refused to apologize when he wasn't even the one who had started the fight and yet he was depicted as the 'bad guy'. It was unfair. "What did you call him?" he asked with a laugh to distract himself from his thoughts.

As Claudine mentioned that he would have a lot of friends soon too, Daniel shook his head. "I don't want a lot of friends" he said matter of factly. Although he appreciated the company of the people he could tolerate he still prefered to be alone at the end of the day. "I want to be better than him" he said. "In magic" he added in case that it wasn't clear yet. He had come to this conclusion to become better during the very first Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson.

So when Claudine agreed to watch the little jinx he had learned he eagerly waited for her to grab an item from out of her pockets. "I hope those are for potion class or a pet or else I will judge you for carrying that around" he pointed at the unopened pack of dead flies before grabbing the unsharpened pencil and placed it on the railing of the balcony. Daniel was overthinking. Claudine would have told him that much, and she would have also offered a bit of advice: it didn’t matter how many friends he winded up having. All that mattered was that he had a few good friends who really cared for him. A grin spread across her face at the question. “Rich boy.” Claudine chuckled. “He certainly hated that name.”

Then Daniel cleared up the slight misunderstanding she’d had of him Oh! So that’s what he wanted to be better at. She nodded in understanding. There was obviously a bit of sibling rivalry between Daniel and Minjae, whether it was on Daniel's part alone. “I can always help you with Charms if you like.” It was one of her strongest subject areas. There was a genuine curiosity about her when she hesitantly asked this question, “Is Daniel your real name? I mean, your brother has a Korean name…” Claudine trailed off awkwardly.

The Snakette laughed. “No. These are for my pet rat. It’s become a habit carrying a pack of these flies around. I’m not even sure why he likes flies as treats.” Listen, Sammy was a little weird. With the pencil selected, she repocketed the other items and gave Daniel her full attention. The only issue was nothing happened. Claudine was calm and cheerful. “No worries. I think you should try again.’’

“It’s stupid…”

Really it was but then again it wasn’t. She felt well within her right to be upset but she felt GUILTY for it.

Lisa bit her lip, drumming her fingers against her arms. She was not going to break and tell anyone how she felt but it was Misa and the look of concern broke the flood gates. All words came hurling out of her mouth next. “Well I have a really good friend. Jasper, yeah? And V is perfect. Also a good friend. Bright blue eyes much better than my own dark poop coloured ones. She’s a good friend of mine too. She’s pretty and sweet and really bossy. We’re working on the bossy thing. Not everyone’s perfect like us, Misa buuuut…. Anyway. Jasper said HI to her first at the football thing and it made me feel all sorts of ways.”

She wrapped her arms lower around her stomach. “My tummy did these weird floppy flippy floppy things and I got mad. Really mad and I didn’t like the way he paid attention to her. AND THEN! I told him that she looked cold cause I’m a good friend and then he gave her his sweater!!” she gasped.

“I guess I’m jealous of Jasper and V….”

She paused with big cruppy eyes, she looked at Misa. “But you can’t tell anyone promise?? I like them both I just…. Guess I don’t like them together.”

Misa couldn't help but smile. Was this Lisa with her first crush? It certainly seemed that way. She was a little giddy about that. (Especially since Lisa trusted her enough to tell her!)

She nodded as Lisa spoke. "Okay. First off, never hate your eyes. They set you apart. They're warm chocolate that any guy would be lucky to swim in." Yes. Okay. Good.

"As for the jealousy thing... that's normal. I get jealous all the time when people aren't paying attention to me." It was hard to have such gorgeous friends too. But in the end, her friends were more important than a small momentarily lack of attention, right?

Right???

Ahem. This wasn't about her though.

"You want to be more than friends with either of them? Or do you like being the center? I think it's the most important to decide what you're feeling and then go from there." she explained in a very wise older woman sort of way. Because that's what Misa was.

"I think it's fair that you want alone time with them individually though. I do that with Auggie. He has a lot of friends and sometimes I just want to be singularly important for a little bit. If that's what you want then you should say something."

Daniel had thought that Claudine had called his brother something awful for him to hate it so much. "But it's true?" he asked, confusion written on his face. "I think it's stupid that he disliked the nickname" he shrugged. He had gotten the nickname Batman from Lisa and even though he did not even like Batman he liked the nickname. Nicknames were fun.

"YOU WOULD?!" he hadn't meant to raise his voice but her offering to help him out with Charms excited him. Any chance to learn more spells was an opportunity that Daniel wanted to grasp."Yes! can you teach me the dancing feet spell?" he had wanted to learn this spell for a while now. even though it was technically a jinx and not a charm but...whatever. It would be awesome to use it on an unexpected victim *cough* Victoria *cough*

Her question about if his name was his real one was a bit odd. The boy looked up at the older girl and then shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe...maybe not" he teased. "Well, my brother was born and lived there for a few years before my family moved here so..." he'd have a Korean name, obviously.

"Your rat is weird" he replied as Claudine went on the explain that the package of flies was for her rat. "Do you have your rat with you? I wanna pet them"

At her words of encouragement, he tried again. "Ebublio!" he said, using the wand movement and aimed at the pencil. This time, it had worked. The pencil was inside of a small bubble and he GRINNED with pride at the older Slytherin. "Told you i could do it"

Lisa had spent a few classes trying to research how to charm her eyes like her eldest brother’s girlfriend. Her bright blue were pretty- almost as pretty as V’s eyes. She DID listen to Misa’s counsel. Chocolate eyes. Yeah, they were chocolate coloured. She didn’t know how to feel about the second part of the sentence. “Swim? In my eyes?” Uhhh she wasn’t following. But maybe that was a phrase for special friends and mistletoe.

Misa got jealous too?!? Yes. Lisa also got jealous when people didn’t pay attention to her. She was the youngest in the household and practically demanded attention wherever she went. She supposed that this was normal. And felt relieved when Misa said it was. “Why does jealousy feel awful and why do I feel guilty?” Chocolate hazelnut eyes looked up to Misa wide as saucers.

Her next question stumped her. It was one that was harder than what some of the Professors had asked because it wasn’t a textbook answer. She bit her lower lip. “I…” Wasnt entirely sure what she wanted just yet. She liked V as a friend aaaand Jasper she liked as a friend too. Though V and her did have a conversation about guys that were cute that started making her think some of her friends were cute. Even Daniel had NICE eyebrows which would be sad if V and Serena removed those eyebrows…. But he wasn’t in the conversation right now…. “I think a little bit of both. I’m jealous of their friendship and that he offered her a jacket…. But I suggested it…. He didn’t offer it to me and he said hi to her first….. Maybe I’m just competitive too about friendships.” she did like to be first and in charge.

Auggie? He was the blonde bloke with the nice swoopy hair. Kinda like Kale Trent but different? Both were blonde. She nodded, wondering what Misa’s feelings were towards Auggie. “Is he your special friend??”

The Snakette shrugged. “I gathered as much but I thought that he probably didn’t like everyone knowing that he’s rich.” Daniel didn’t seem to mind though and if her observation was true, then this was a difference between the brothers. Claudine grinned. “Of course. We can start with that particular spell. Just let me know when you’d like to get started and you can consider it a date.” Had she known that he planned to use the spell on Victoria, Claudine would have heartily agreed. That girl was rude. So rude.

Oh, well that explained why Daniel’s name was what she considered normal; not an exotic one. Claudine chuckled. “No, he’s not with me right now. Actually, I left him snoozing in my dorm. Tell you what, I’ll bring him down to the Great Hall at dinner time. You can meet him then.” Samm sometimes hid in her pockets and she’d feed him bits of food from the Slytherin Table. That weird rat enjoyed bread and butter pudding more than anything else. Don’t ask. The reasoning was beyond Claudine.

Was she excited? Yes, the girl certainly was. She even clapped her hands. “Quite the skill you’ve got there.” Honestly, it was always great to see anyone succeed in their spellwork. “That’s pretty neat.” She gestured at the bubble. “Learnt that by yourself?”

Misa smiled. "Yes. You'll like that one day. I promise." she said with a nod. Hopefully not any time soon though. Stay ickle, pls.

"Because it kind of is awful to make ourselves the center of everything..." At least that's how she interpreted[ that feeling. "I think maybe what's best is to be open and say pretty often when people are important to you and hope they say the same thing back?" It was how Misa was trying to operate.

She considered that. "You should have special alone time with both then. Like a weekly lunch friend date. That way you can get personal attention."

As for that last question she couldn't help but giggle. "No. Not anything like that."

It was hard to find a day that wasn't raining but today was it.

With the kitchens closed, Sammy was at a loss for where to go and what to do. It was almost as if he was wandering around anywhere he could, completely lost. And the recipes? They weren't helping. What was the point in writing any of these down if he couldn't test them?

It was why, on this day, the third year could be seen wandering along the fourth floor until he came to a stop by the balcony. This wasn't a space he went to a lot, but today, ......well. Sitting down on the floor, he scooted over until he was close to the edge. A small smile started to spread across his face as he looked over the mountains and the lake.

How did he never really notice this view before?

Why was she even over here? The library was on the opposite side of the castle! And yet, here she was wandering around as though she didn’t have a million and one things to do and people to see. Mind boggling.

With a deep sigh, Ingrid wandered towards the balcony door, her eyes not really seeing the corridor but allowing her legs to carry her towards the balcony itself only stopping when she realised there was someone actually there sitting close to the edge.

Freezing where she stood, Ingrid pulled her wand out slowly because he seemed pretty close to the edge. A little too close for her liking, Ingrid shuffled a little closer to one side to see if she recognised the face and to her surprise, it was a Ravenclaw and no less a third year one. “Hey Sam. You okay there buddy?” her voice shooting up higher ever so slightly as she stared down at the reddish brown haired boy, her hands now moving to her hips as a small smile spread across her lips. Heights always freaked her out. This was no exception and Sam was a little too close for comfort.

“uhh okay… ” she said awkwardly. Someone swimming in her eyes sounded painful. Of course, she was taking the comment very literally. Hopefully that day was far, far away like in a galaxy that was very far far away. She had plans to stay ickle for now.

Misa’s answer to her question made Lisa start nodding her head. It made sense to her. “It is… I… I liked being the center of attention at home. Youngest sibling syndrome … that’s what my older siblings call it,” she offered with a chuckle before frowning. It felt socially unacceptable to want to be in charge and in the center 24/7…. Be open and tell people that are important to you..? She bit her lip, took a deep breath, wondering all the possible scenarios her little head could think up. “What… what if they don’t feel the same way?”

She nodded again (she was doing a lot of nodding) but Misa was making a lot of sense and she was giving really good advice! “Jasper and I spend loads of time together flying … it’s mostly me asking for his help! And then V and I…. I hung out at her house,” she beamed, pushing a strand of dark hair behind her ear as she talked about those two.

Eyes wide, she looked thoroughly confused at Auggie NOT being Misa’s special friend. “Whaaat!” This was almost like Mamie and Evan not being a thing. Sheesh. She was not good at this predicting relationship things…. “Are you friends?”

Misa considered Lisa's question. "Then it's best to know. If someone wants to be superficial friends, that's okay. You just invest the superficial in them." She knew people like that. It was okay. But it was nice to know where you stood with someone.

She nodded. "Yes. Exactly. Keep doing special things and every thing will be okay." Probably. Hopefully. So far it was working for at least.

"Yeah. He's one of my best friends and I think he's great." Misa loved her some Auggie.

Buddy?!

Sammy jumped and immediately looked up to see someone standing there. And not just anyone, someone he recognised all too well. "Ingrid?" Confused? He was. "Y-yeah. Yeah, of course. " There were a lot of questions going through his mind right now. Like, why she was looking at him like he needed extra help. Or why she was here.

And he wasn't going to go into the change in her voice. Maybe girls go through a voice change in their teenage years too.

"I mean," He paused to conveniently clear his throat. "Come and sit. The view is really nice right now." Pat pat for the bit of ground next to him. The ground was a decent place to sit, right?
