| | Balcony The balcony located on the fourth floor is one of the few balconies in the castle. In an opening along the corridor, on the opposite side of the castle from the library, is where you can find this particular balcony. If you ever need a break from doing that lengthy Arithmancy homework or need a place to relax with a friend, this balcony is a great place to get a few minutes of fresh air before getting back to work again.
You will notice that you are approaching the balcony when you can feel a slight change in temperature. During the autumn and spring seasons, the breezes that come through this opening are inviting. The winter months, however, bring forth a chill, even with the nearby torches being lit. No matter the temperature, the fourth-floor balcony always provides some of the most breathtaking sights of the grounds below and mountains beyond as well as a clear view of the Whomping Willow in all of her glory. Keep note that it does get a little wet here when it rains, so make sure you conjure an umbrella.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Brandon Fox Hufflepuff Fifth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Phoebe Calypso [s]Dupont[/s] Slytherin Third Year | Which came first, the phoenix or the flame? Ash loved this balcony. The view was beautiful (and it was a good place to cry and feel better). But Ash was not, in fact, here to cry (Surprising). She was actually here to get pictures. Not moving ones. She dragged her stuff over, then started to set it all up. She was also going to paint it, if possible. Just to get as many versions as possible. Maybe sketch it too. Maybe she'd stay here all day. It made her feel happy and free to be out here. It was open to the outside, and cool, and the view was amazing. Ash felt like a phoenix flying through the air. But not actually, because she was a person and people didn't fly. Perhaps she could come here when she felt really sad. It had a calming effect on her. Seriously. |

She was meaning to go to the library, but the stairs started moving, and she didn't want to ask for help (she had seen another first year being made fun of by a group of fourth years for asking for directions - that is NOT what Ollie needed).
She wasn't upset that she had found her way to this balcony, it was very pretty. She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. There was a nice breeze and it calmed her a little. When she opened her eyes she noticed a familiar silhouette. She walked a little closer to the girl setting up what looked like photography equipment. "Ash?" Ollie said, not too loud just in case that wasn't the girl she had met at Diagon Alley. |

Ollie said, not too loud just in case that wasn't the girl she had met at Diagon Alley. Ash turned slightly. Oh- it was just Ollie. Ash didn't want to make assumptions, but she thought of Ollie as a very nonthreatening person. She was smaller, younger, and never quite seemed to know what she was doing. Still, you could never make assumptions. But if Ash thought there was anyone in the school who would push her off a balcony, it would be Cambridge, not Ollie (Not Upstead either- they were too smart for that, and too calm). "Hey Ollie. What's up? How do you like Hogwarts? Personally, I find it confusing, but nobody else seems to. Eh, confusing is better than bad." Ash responded to kindness with confused distrust, but she responded to cruelty with unbridled rage. Confusing but good was infinitely better than familiar and bad. "I was just setting up my stuff so that I could get some pictures and some drawings of the view here. You can be in them, if you'd like." It was good to put people in her art. People found it moving. Seeing a random laundry room or a pretty view meant nothing, but if you put traumatized kids in the scene, they cared a hole lot more. Even if the kids weren't traumatized. Kids in general made people care. |

Kids in general made people care. Ollie perked up. Being in a model for some drawings? How exciting! "Oh I'd love to!" She nodded her head. Ollie had tried to get into drawing, but after many, many, many failed attempts, she decided to give up. But to be a model in one sounded so fun. She moved closer to Ash's things and looked at the interesting bits and bobs she had gathered together. Many of these things Ollie had never seen before.
Now it was time to answer the other question Ash had asked. What did Ollie think about Hogwarts? "Well... It is sooo confusing" She let out a deep breath. It was! "Let's just say I was supposed to end up in the Library, but somehow I ended up here. This is like my third time getting lost today! And I got sorted into Slytherin and I can't figure out why!" It felt really good to let go of some of the things that were pent up inside. She hadn't really talked to anyone else since she arrived. Plus she was really missing home and her dad. |

It felt really good to let go of some of the things that were pent up inside. She hadn't really talked to anyone else since she arrived. Plus she was really missing home and her dad. "cool. I'll paint you in then." Ash wondered if Ollie thought she had to sit there for like five hours. She didn't. Ash could remember a picture in her brain. Should she mention that fact? Nahhh... it would probably be fine. Ash took a mental snapshot and filed it away. Done. Now she could paint it. "Oh. I guess we find different things confusing then. You're confused by all the physical stuff like houses and staircases, and I'm confused at how nice everyone is being! That's funny." It wasn't really funny at all, but Ash had a weird sense of humor. Besides, it was good to know that someone was also being afraid. "Well, I think you're on the right floor for the library. Wrong side of the castle though." Well, Ash thought so. She never paid attention to directions, she just instinctively knew the route. "And houses- they're complicated. Very few people have their personalities set in stone as a first year anyway, and there is lots of individual variation. And some people's houses don't seem to make that much sense. I was a different person when I was eleven, and the only thing that makes me a Ravenclaw is that I think about the consequences of my bad decisions before I make them." She laughed. "It doesn't really matter though. A bad decision is a bad decision. And there are good and bad people in every house, so sorting people based on one trait is kinda arbitrary. I don't know why Ravenclaws have to answer riddles to get into our common room. Not very secure, and just because I'm supposedly in the 'smart house' doesn't mean I wanna answer riddles all the time." She rolled her eyes. They should just ask for fingerprint scans instead. They could pretend that they were secret agents in a secret hideout. And the common room would be protected from people in other houses who were just really good at riddles. "You're a Slytherin, then? Have you met Claudine yet? She's my favorite." Her most favorite mom friend. Ollie was lucky she Claudine in her house. Super lucky. |

Ollie's lip formed a pout "I'm really good at riddles" She kicked a small rock that was under her foot. It just seemed so unfair to Ollie that she wouldn't get the chance to change her house! What if she completely changes? Well that wouldn't make sense since she was sorted into Slytherin and to her understanding she wasn't one. She debated confiding in Ash about what Remy had said. After all, Ash seemed to give her honest opinion no matter what. "No I haven't really met anyone in my house. Well I know V, but technically I met her before the sorting." She paused for a moment. She didn't want to get on Ash's bad side if she worded the question wrong. She was considered Ash a friend and hoped she felt the same. "Is there supposed to be something wrong with Slytherins? A girl I rode on the train with said her father was one and made a face. And my father refused to tell me about the house. Are Slytherin's often bad people?" She prayed the answer was no. She was sorted into the house. |

Why couldn't they have fingerprint authorization? It was cooler and more secure.
Ash bit her lip at Ollie's next question. Her mind flashed immediately to Claudine. Then Serena, who Ash was pretty sure was a Slytherin. "Nothing wrong with Slytherins. Claudine is a Slytherin." Therefore, Slytherins couldn't be inherently bad. They mostly just reminded her of sassy Hufflepuffs. "There are bad people in every house anyway." True. Cambridge called her a mudblood several times, and she was a Gryffindor. Logical reasoning. "That girl probably just hates her father. Well, my father's a muggle, and he isn't a good father. That doesn't say anything about muggles, does it now?" See? Logic. |

Ash seemed like she was. "Sorry, I just wasn't sure if there was a stereotype that I would be labeled by. I don't like when people think bad of me. My mum's a muggle too... But I don't know if she's a good person." Ash would be the first person at Hogwarts to learn of Ollie's mother. "Do you mind if I ask about your dad?" She was curious but didn't want to pry if Ash wasn't open to answering. Ollie definitely got irritated when her friends asked about her mum. But in Ollie's cause, she didn't know anything about her mum. |

Anyone sitting high up on a "pedalstool" thinking they were better than everyone else deserved to be taken down a notch or two. "Sure you can ask about my father." Even though she didn't know everything about him. "Just don't ask about my mom or stepmom. they're both dead, and I couldn't tell you anything about them." She didn't know anything. Her mom died when she was young, and she had hardly seen her stepmom. |

Ollie wished she never thought of her father as a bad person, she adored him! What could a father do to have their child dislike them? Maybe if they leave like her mom... But Ollie didn't hold that against her. She daydreamed that her mother was part of a secret alliance that forced her to leave. But she wasn't stupid, she knew it was her mum's choice and if she really, truly cared for Ollie, she would have found a way to stay. |

"He lets me do whatever I want as long as I don't tarnish the family name. I like it, but I'm pretty sure that it's objectively bad parenting. Because like, it won't prepare you for real life, and you stop your kid from doing stupid stuff." Ash sighed. "I guess I'm pretty lacking in the good decision-making department. And the respecting authority department. And the understanding consequences department." And a lot of things, really. But she couldn't hold it against him (which was another problem). She liked being free, and he was probably just sad because his wives kept dying. "People keep wondering why I act the way I do- well, that's why. My bodyguards can't control me without backup from him, and that backup isn't coming." How could you impose consequences on a person who was as scarred as her and very used to doing whatever she wanted? They couldn't exactly torture her, and compared to crucio, getting yelled at was nothing. |

She had a father who did all the things Ash's dad didn't do, and Ollie felt like she wasn't prepared for real life either! Maybe there was a missing middle ground there. A parent who didn't care too much, but still cared. "Maybe its not all that bad. My dad cares too much. He always wants me to follow in his footsteps and think about making decisions for my future. Every thing I do has to be talked over with him, and if I don't I get punished." Ollie frowned. She didn't mind that he was over bearing, she just wanted to have fun sometimes! Maybe that was why she day dreamed so much - a distraction from the boring world. "Sometimes I wish I had a different dad. But then I remember this TV show I watched, this princess and a girl from town traded lives and hated it. So I guess I'll keep him." She giggled, they had watched that TV show together, on the weekend though, TV wasn't allowed on school nights. |

Personally, Ash liked her own dad better, so she was fine not trading lives with the girl from town. She scrunched her nose. neglect was bad, but she personally preferred it to having someone who was a micromanager. "He doesn't hate that you're a Slytherin, does he?" If he did, she had some (un)kind words for him. "I wouldn't trade him for the world though- I might end up with someone strict or mean." And they all knew what happened when someone forced her to do stuff she didn't want to do. She exploded in a fiery ball of rage. Not a desirable outcome at all. |

Ollie could feel her eyes fill with tears. This was embarrassing, she's crying at school again already?? Don't cry Ollie... Don't! she thought to herself. "No.. Well I don't know. I thought he would send me a letter but nothing so far." Deep inside she knew the truth, he didn't want her to be a Slytherin. But Ollie didn't want to face the truth: She had disappointed her father again. She was really fighting these tears now. She did NOT want to seem like a little kid in front of her older peer. |

Oh, jeez. Was the first year gonna CRY? Ash didn't know what to do with CRYING FIRST YEARS. She cried a lot, but only in private. She didn't know how to HANDLE this stuff. It was all Ollie's dad's fault... if she ever saw him, she was gonna fight that dude. "Hmph." That wasn't nice of him at all. "Well, you are a Slytherin, so sucks for him. Too bad, so sad, etcetera. Plus, it's your life, not his." Just because Ash didn't HAVE overbearing parents didn't mean she didn't HATE overbearing parents. They fell firmly into the category of BAD AUTHORITY. And Ash was against BAD AUTHORITY. |

"Sorry, but I'd rather talk about something else, if you don't mind" She sniffled. Ollie liked Ash, she didn't realize she gave good advice, but she did! She hoped Ash didn't think she was a baby after this. She had to change the subject and fast. "How'd you get into drawing?" None of her friends were interested in drawing so Ollie never knew someone into it, other than when she had tried for herself. |

It was time for a subject change. Ash was getting all worked up anyway. "I have a lot of time on my hands, and I wanted to remember stuff. So I just drew people until they started to look right." Long nights alone in her mansion, she'd draw Theodore and Brandon and what she thought her mother looked like. So she would remember. |

She had definitely spoiled the mood. How embarrassing! She started chewing on the inside her cheek. "I should probably try to get back to the library..." she looked back out to the nice view she had stumbled upon. "Thanks for letting me be in one of your drawings" She wasn't trying to cut out on Ash but knew that the area had a weird tension surrounding the two girls. |

It wasn't even possible to ruin Ash's mood. She was in a perpetual bad mood, sooo... "No problem. I'm trying to draw everyone I find. If you see any friends who would be interested, let me know." Wait. Was Ollie trying to ditch her? Eh. Didn't matter. She wouldn't be the only one. But. "Do you know where the library is?" Because might as well not get lost while ditching her. Ollie might bump into her again on accident. |

"Not really, no" she gave a little, awkward laugh. Maybe staying here with Ash wasn't a bad idea. She wouldn't be lost if she stayed. But she still felt like there was a weird tension. "How long did it take you to learn your way around the school?" A real question. Ollie wasn't sure she would ever be able to memorize her way around the school, but maybe Ash could give her some tips before she headed off. |

Ollie was trying to go, but she didn't even know where to. Awkward. "I have a photographic memory. And a good sense of direction. I can give you a tour sometime. Show you all of the good hiding spots and stuff." There were some really good places to cry around here. |

Great, now Ollie's teary eyes would be stuck in Ash's head forever... right? Was that how photographic memories worked? "Never getting lost, must be nice" She tucked her hair behind her ear awkwardly. She really should get going, she did want to study! "I'll take you up on that offer of a tour sometime. Guess I'll try and find my way to the library now." She offered another weird, tight smile and turned back the way she had come, walking toward the entrance (or was it technically an exit now?). Before leaving for good she turned back to Ash and waved. |

Before leaving for good she turned back to Ash and waved. Ash remembered a lot of other people's teary eyes too. "Byeeee! Have fun trying to get there. If you need directions, you can always ask someone. The library's on the other side of the building."
Unless she ran into Cambridge. Then it would be a better idea to NOT ask for directions.
Ash went back to painting. People came, and people left. At least this goodbye was temporary and didn't involve punching anyone. |

| Linds/Daniel <3 ~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes. Claudine always loved being on this particular balcony. Why, you many want to ask? Because of the view, of course! Hello, no matter the time of day, there was always something pretty to see. The best views happened in the early mornings or late afternoons. Claudine figured that was because of the way the sun cast its shadows on everything below it. Or something like that. Whatever. The views were just heavenly, okay?
The girl stood on tiptoes, hands on the actual rail of the balcony as she peered around. It was as though Claudine was trying to get a view of all the sights. She actually was trying to do just that on this fine afternoon. Too bad she hadn’t brought along her sketch pad. |
