In the months since the Neo-Alliance followers took over the sixth floor, nearly all transfiguration classes have been held outside, and this one is no exception. Today’s lesson takes place on a lovely early spring afternoon on an area of the school grounds just outside the Forbidden Forest. The weather is unseasonably warm for this time of year, so there is no need for heating charms.
As you approach, you’ll notice two rows of benches arranged in a semicircle in front of a copse of trees. A conjured chalkboard sits in the middle of the semicircle, bearing the message: DO NOT TOUCH THE BOXES! The two large cardboard boxes in question are stacked behind the chalkboard, slightly hidden from view. Professor Carton stands beside the chalkboard to greet the students. At first glance, he appears unaffected by recent events. There is no sign of fear or sadness on his face; the only thing different from his usual stoic demeanor is his unreadable expression as he watches the students arrive.
He greets each student with instructions to take a seat, though he gives no indication that the students from The Room are expected to separate from the others. An oversight on his part, perhaps?
OOC: Welcome to our second OOC transfiguration lesson! Please remember that all students living in The Room would be escorted to class. We will begin in 18-20 HOURS CLASS HAS STARTED.
Lesson Progression:
Q1: What kind of animal would you want to help you in a fight? Why did you choose that animal? Q2: What are some things to consider when conjuring? Why is conjuring an animal more difficult than conjuring an object? Mini Activity Main Activity
Mamie was thrilled when Carton brought out pinatas, but when he separated them by house and Room status, she was less thrilled. There weren't a lot of Hufflepuffs in The Room.
And Minjae was gone.
A little sadly, she trudged over to the badger pinata on the left. Remembering the awkward wing-to-body proportions of her first owl, she closed her eyes and wrinkled her nose, focusing her best on the proper wing size for the barn owl she wanted to conjure. "Avis," she said, briefly opening her eyes to make the wand movement. With a bang and a puff of smoke, she was pleased to see that, while still a little...lopsided looking, this second conjured barn owl did at least have wings large enough to fly with. She wanted to get the conjuration right, though, so she was going to practice the birds more.
Also, the more birds, the easier to pummel the presumably papier-mache badger hanging in front of her.
"Avis!" she said, eyes darting from the lopsided owl to the sky as she pictured a barn owl flying. Bang, flash, barn owl. This one was small, more of an owlet, really, but it was not lopsided! It had normal proportions, so it could fly! She grinned and exhaled in relief.
Now she was supposed to get her owls, well the two that could fly, to attack the badger? That seemed easy enough, she thought, going over the incantation in her head a few times. She pointed her wand at the badger pinata. "Oppugno!" she said with very real confidence after her successful conjuration.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Fiona saw the right-hand serpent pinata break and spill all its delicious contents on the floor, much to her delight. She scooped up a couple of chocolate frogs and a small handful of jelly slugs and pocketed them in her robes. She felt very proud of herself as she observed the other students practising their spellwork. With that sense of confidence and only five minutes before the end of the lesson, Fiona decided that no more practice was needed.

Try visualizing a different, smaller kind of bird next time, and if you still can’t do it, you can practice Oppugno on these…” He cast a nonverbal Avis, and a flock of blue and red birds appeared.
Dahlia wasn't sure what Carton was thinking upon hearing her answer but he looked a bit surprised. Why, she wasn't really sure. Maybe he has expected something more flashy or colorful from her and that wasn't the case. Not today. She nodded. A change of pace or switching to a new activity was sometimes helpful when a current situation wasn't working out as planned.
"I can give it a try." A smaller bird. Perhaps a finch or something similar in size would work. It couldn't hurt to to try. Lia smiled at the flock of blue and red conjured birds. "Maybe it would be best if I took a short break and tried Oppugno for a bit." That might be an even better idea for the time being.
Still looking at the conjured birds that weren't hers, Lia took a deep breath. Pointing her wand at them she spoke clearly wondering if this would work or not. "Oppugno!" The first time brought about no results at all, the flock of birds remaining exactly where they had been.
So she tried again. This time she really did her best to visualize the birds attacking the targeted pinata. "Oppugno!"

A second later, the macaw on her shoulder had her full attention when nipped her. It startled her, yes, but the fifth year was more delighted which might come across as weird to others. Giggling, she nudged her head against the macaw’s.
Five minutes left? Perhaps one more practice could be snuck in.
“Get ready to help wreck that pinata this time, okay?’’ Claudine told the bird. She readied herself and her wand. “Oppugno.” The birds were hopefully going to go after that left Snakey pinata that had been aimed at.
The macaw was loving every minute of the attention it got. It nudged the girl back, making happy bird noises. The other macaw, finished with its work, flew over and perched at her feet, looking up at her with a SQUAWK as if to say, What about me, hooman? Did I do good? Neither bird had any intention of leaving anytime soon, but leave they did. At the sound of the Oppugno spell, they flew to the reassembled snake pinata and began nipping at it. They made a hole in the snake pinata’s midsection, but not one large enough to break the pinata.

The two owls circled lazily above the girl’s head, splitting off in different directions at the sound of the spell. The small one hovered in front of her with a soft WHOO, as if to say, look at me! I’m so smol and cuddly! The lopsided one, however, sped toward the left badger pinata. It perched on the pinata’s head, slowly but surely pecking and tearing at it, but the poor creature couldn’t break it alone.

The blue and red birds circled, unfazed by the first spell attempt. In fact, they were so unbothered that they began singing a happy little tune. The second spell jarred the birds into motion, and they flew in a v-shape to the left eagle pinata… all but two of them. The pair that stayed behind circled above the girl’s head, still singing sweetly, while the rest of the flock tore into the eagle pinata. A hole appeared near the bottom, growing bigger and bigger until the candy finally spilled out.
Norman watched with a small smile as the Slytherins from the dorms retrieved their candy. Elsewhere, he saw the left Ravenclaw pinata burst and a lone owl pecking at the left Hufflepuff one. A quick glance at his watch told him time was running out, and he addressed the class, “Great job, everyone! That’s all the time we have for practice today.”
With a flick of his wand, he conjured a flock of birds to help the owl attack the Hufflepuff pinata, and soon an army of blue and red birds followed, swarming the other five pinatas until they were all busted. “If you haven’t already done so, come get your candy quickly,” he said, his blue-green eyes darting apprehensively toward the castle.
Please do it fast! The hoods would be back at any moment. Just in case, he placed himself in front of the students, instinctively gripping his wand. No one was getting hexed on his watch! “Once you have your candy somewhere safe, you’re dismissed.”
OOC: Apologies for the delay! There was a huge storm in my area Thursday night, and it made my internet connection very spotty for a while. Anyway, that’s a wrap. Thanks for coming! I’ll leave the thread open a few more hours for those who wish to rp their charrie collecting candy/leaving.
