Transfiguration Lesson 1: Ferret Out the Competition As you step into the Transfiguration classroom on a cold November afternoon, you may notice that the room setup more closely resembles a hockey rink than a classroom. Black lines mark the perimeter of the room, and another line divides the room down the middle. There are no desks today, only long rows of benches behind the perimeter lines on the left and right sides of the room. The sporty setup isn’t the only thing out of the ordinary, as Professor Carton is nowhere to be seen. Standing in his usual place at the front of the room is a large brown dog. Some observant students may notice the dog’s blue-green eyes and the scar across its forehead. The following message is written on the blackboard behind the dog: Quote:
Lesson Progression Question 1: Name a spell or type of transfiguration that involves animals Question 2: When is it useful to transform something or someine into an animal? Mini Activity Main Activity |
They were in november and Bella was not liking the cold one bit. She felt cold inside and out no matter how much clothes she wore under her robes. With no way to write home she was glad at least to have learned some heating spells. Trying not to visibly shudder Bella entered the transfiguration classroom, stopping to stare mid step at the brown dog at the front and the ice rink that filled the place, where there should have been desks. Blinking she mumbled "Cute dog," to herself before she made her way over to sit down on one of the benches on the left. Getting her supplies out of her backpack she wondered where Professor Carton was hiding. If he was like her great grandmother than maybe he was the dog... |
Ash was being on good behavior in this class today. Walking in, the professor wasn't there. She took a spot on the bench that was close to the door. She also nodded at the dog. it had a big scar. Just like her! She looked at the dog nicely. Who knew, this was transfiguration. It could be the professor. Same eyes. Helping her being good was the fact that she was being chill today. Her attitude could change quickly though. |
Was it chilly???? Cal hadn't noticed. Nothing a jumper under your robes couldn't solve. His mam had always told him to bring a jumper. And what did you know??? It worked! Cal walked in, immediately in good spirits when he saw the DOG!!!!!!!!! "DOG!" He went over to pet the dog, but noticed the blackboard just in time and took a step back. Maybe later. Where was the Professor anyway?????? Cal looked around but saw only some other students, so he gave them a quick wave before deciding where to stand. He took a spot near the front of the class, this looked like it was going to be good. |
hi Bella! Transfiguration was a subject Aboli found herself good at, but she didn't necessarily enjoy it as much as others. At least she didn't absolutely loathe it "Good day, Bella," Aboli said simply before giving the dog a cursory glance. |
DOG. DOG!!!!!!!! DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first thing Kinsay wanted to do was run and hug the dog. Naturally. So she obviously went out of her way to walk right up to it. That's when she noticed the instructions on the board. The instructions on the board that explicitly said 'do not pet the dog'. And while the instructions were very clear, there's something one ought to know about blackboards that tell you not to do things. These kinds of blackboard notices only makae Gryffindors want to do that something even more. So instead of moving to sit down or moving to pet the dog, Kinsay just stood there NEXT to the dog. Trying to resist the urge to pet it. Buuuuuuuuuuut the sign didn't say anything about hugging. Could she hug the dog instead? There were so many things to think about. Like, why was there a dog here and not their professor. UNLESS!!! Was the dog their professor???? Kinsay gave it a good SQUINT to assess the situation. |
Brrr. It was cold along the corridors. The setting of the classroom distracted her though. It looked like something out of the Muggle Studies textbooks, something about sports. Claudine shrugged. Sports wasn’t exactly her thing but there was- OH LOOK. A dog! Such a handsome boy. She wished she could give it a pet. Or maybe not. Those eyes and that scar looked way familiar. “Hi, doggo. Or professor?’’ Grinning, the Snakette made her way over to Bella and Aboli. “Hi, fellow Snakettes.” Claudine sat down next to Aboli and busied herself by preparing her supplies. Yes, she was in a good mood. |
Kizzy <3 "Hello Pro-awww!" Cece had finished securing the plait in her hair, looking up to find that the professor wasn't actually standing in his usual spot at all. The dog in his place was a pleasant surprise and the blonde grinned a little, wiggling her fingers at him. Was it a him? Hm. Gaze shifting to Kinsay, she could almost HEAR the thoughts inside of her head. She got it. The URGE to squish the dog. How could anyone NOT want to? Still, the board was PRETTY clear about what they shouldn't do and touching was off limits. "Hey Kiz? Come sit by me, okay?" She offered the younger Gryffindor a grin and headed towards the benches in hopes that she'd follow suit. |
Eden always took special care to look put together. Before Transfiguration, however, she took extra special care. She was proud to have mastered the ironing spell and it was a rule to look presentable, okay? Oooh. A dog. Something about it seemed a little off, but Eden wasn't going to stand in its face and try and get to the bottom of it in front of the whole class. The now 12 year old was trying to become a more serious student. She would have liked to sit in the front row, but didn't feel safe doing so as a muggleborn. It was better to be in the middle, that way no matter where the Hopefully she'd get something done in class today instead of having to zone out into her now very developed Happy Place. Only time would tell. |
Violet was feeling better than usual this morning because she was enjoying the colder weather. And she rather enjoyed Transfiguration--not quite as much as Potions, but it was becoming one of her favorite subjects. "Hello, Professor..." she started to say as she entered the classroom, but stopped in her tracks. There was no professor, only a dog--which would have been nice, only there was also a sign saying not to pet it. But what struck Violet with dismay was the arrangement of the classroom--like some sort of sports rink. Violet disliked sports at the best of times and was still getting water out of her shoes from the snitch-catching exercise over the pool in Flying Class. She had quite enough of wizarding sports as it was, was every class going to involve them? Sighing to herself, she headed to a bench on the left side of the rink, got out her things, and prepared to wait. |
@Cece @Kizzy Bernie walked in and saw the dog, and like Kinsay James, she really really wanted to pet it. If anyone asked her, she'd deny this till she was blue in the face, but the two were more alike than they let on. It was true that the warning to NOT pet it just made the dog all the more tempting, and had it been any other year, she might have just ignored it and pet the dog anyway, but... alas. This year was the Goon Squad year so she stuffed her hands in the pockets of her robe instead. She murmured a greeting to the prof-dog, trying her best not to talk in a baby voice because it was soooooo cuteeeeee, and came over to sit by Cece and Kinsay. Gryffindors had to stick together, right? Bernadette made sure that Cece's desk was between them, though, on account of how Lil James could really really get on her nerves sometimes. Regardless, she whispered, "Hi," to both of them. |
(Joining Bella, Aboli and Claudine) Fiona entered the Transfiguration classroom and immediately she raised an eyebrow at the unusual layout. Her eyes then fell upon the large dog which gave her a sense of familiarity. Fiona gave a small and polite nod to the dog. If her intuition was correct then she was just being respectful, right? Heading for the bench where three of her fellow Slytherins were, Fiona sat down next to Claudine. "Hey, Claudine, Aboli and Bella," she greeted as she extracted the necessary supplies from her bag. |
sitting by Cal! Mamie was not chilly, as she had donned an extra pair of socks this morning. They were warm, they were cushy, her feet would not be hurting from climbing all the stairs, even if she went all the way from the Hufflepuff common room to one of the tower classes all in one go. She was a bit surprised by the dog in their classroom. Were they allowed dogs as pets at Hogwarts? She didn't think so. She took a seat on a bench near one of the Hufflepuff first years, Cal she thought his name was. "Hello," she greeted warmly. |
Phoebe could spot a problem from outside the classroom. The name of the problem was Kizzy James, and the face of the problem was a dog that she was NOT SUPPOSED to pet that she was obviously very keen to love on. It wasn't surprising, since it was a dog, and dogs were a mortal weakness no matter who you are. Phoebe dropped into a seat next to Bernie and snapped her fingers at her sister. "Kinsay Cassandra James, get away from that dog. Get over here." No no no no no. |
It took approximately three seconds, from the moment they entered the classroom, for Nem to reach their limit. Three seconds was all it took to assess the situation, and come to a conclusion they felt both confident and irritated with. After taking another three seconds - maybe four - to zen, Nem wordlessly headed for a free spot on one of the benches that lined the room, and settled onto it. They dropped their bag onto the floor at their feet, but didn't take anything out of it yet, only leaned their arms on their lap and propped their chin in their hand, staring impassively at the wall across the classroom, and nowhere else. But if an obstacle course or something similar appeared in order for the dog to start showing off, Nem was out of here. |
It was getting chilly, wasn’t it? He really needed to start pulling from his winter wardrobe when he got dressed in the morning. The first thing Devin noticed when he entered the transfiguration classroom was the rather unusual classroom setup. Although, what was ever usual at Hogwarts anyway? The second thing that Devin noticed was the dog. Devin looked at the dog. ”Professor?” One could only assume that their transfiguration professor was an animagus. After his somewhat of a greeting to their professor?dog, Devin slid into the next available spot on one of the benches. Now, what was this setup all about? It looked to be a sports pitch of some kind. |
Kale had some questions the moment he entered the Transfiguration Classroom. Some of them were about the location, others included the lack of a Professor heading the classroom, but the most pressing was the dog. And he noticed he wasn’t the only one. Some of the Stark kids were fussing near the dog. The Stark kids were among some of the smartest and most accomplished kids at school and so, like, Kale figured once they worked out the dog situation he’d get a pet. So he patiently waited his turn at a nearby bench. Heya Pupper! |
It was a cold day and Camryn was glad that she had worn an extra layer today. She arrived at the Tranfiguration classroom and took a deep breath before she went inside. She was expecting to see the dreaded guys in hoods and was temporarily relieved that they hadn’t arrived.......yet. About to say hello to the professor, Camryn realized that there was no professor to be found. She gave a small smile when she saw the big dog sitting in the room. Cute, but apparently they were not allowed to touch. Instructions noted, Cam went to find an empty space on a bench and sat down. She gathered the things that she needed for class and sat back to wait for class to begin. |
Cece, Fifi, Bernie <3 She knew she wasn't supposed to pet it, but that didn't stop her from reaaaaaally wanting to. The only thing that managed to snap her out of the revere was her sister's literal snapping and Cece Summers. Oop. She turned once more to pout at the cute dog that she wasn't allowed to pet (for SOME reason), before quickly following behind Cece and settling into the seat beside her. Would it be rude to ask Bernie and Phoebe to trade seats? "Hi," she whispered back once finally settled, but her eyes were still on the cute dog. Could they pet it AFTER class? |
First came relief, The Hoods™ were nowhere to be found. But the relief was short lived at there was no professor present and Atlas soon found himself rolling and unrolling his Gryffindor tie for about five counts before his fingers moved on to tugging at the hem of his grey sweater vest and stretching out the seams. He didn't like this...he didn't like it one bit. Hadn't the class notice explicitly said to leave any shenanigans behind? He liked dogs well enough, Auntie Jade had two he especially loved, but this one in the front of the classroom came with the promise of some kind of a surprise and...considering how on edge he already was with potential polyjuiced adults around any corner...he really REALLY really REALLY did not need the reminder that even the creatures on the ground may not be what they appear to be. Quinnifred has joined the Edenator Quinn entered the Transfiguration classroom with a spring in his step. While he hadn't been swimming laps around other students, he had been able to keep up in this class pretty well, and it was really fulfilling for him, honestly. His mood only brightened when he saw a dog in the middle of the classroom—had it not been for the sign, he would've gone and given it some kisses. Alas, they would be saved for another dog another day. He went and scooted into the bench next to Eden with a smile and a wave. "I hope we get to pet the dog at some point during the lesson." |
Question 1 SPOILER!!: Individual replies here! The dog looked to the door once more, as if anticipating straggling students. Upon seeing that there were no more coming, he began to transform. Within seconds, the dog was gone, and Professor Carton stood in the dog’s place. Norman’s blue-green eyes, the exact same shade as the dog’s, scanned the room for any signs of trouble. So far, so good. Quiet, compliant students and no hooded figures in sight. He hoped it would stay that way, though he doubted it. Just because he didn’t see the hoods now didn’t mean they wouldn’t be watching. They could barge in at any moment or already be hiding in plain sight. In any case, he wasn’t letting his guard down! “Good afternoon. Let’s get started,” he addressed the class, pausing for a moment to allow them to turn their attention to him if they hadn’t already. While he waited, he flicked his wand at the door to close it. Closed but not locked, just in case the hooded horrors decided to make a guest appearance later. “Who can name a spell or type of transfiguration that involves animals? I’ve just shown you one. Give me another.” And please, for the love of Merlin, don’t everyone say Animagus! OOC: Class has officially started. IC late arrivals will lose points. Feel free to join in any time; just pretend your charrie has been here the whole time unless you want IC consequenses. For this question, Norman is asking for a spell or method of transfiguration that uses animals. You have AT LEAST 18 HOURS until we move on. |
Fiona's intuition had been on the money as she watched Professor Carton transform from his Animagus form to his human form. At his question, Fiona raised her hand very quickly and answered, "There's a spell that turns an object into a rabbit. Er... 'Lapifors' I think." |
don't mind us, been here a while A Hockey rink?!? Excuse her while she just would turn around and run. She was about tired of all this physical activity she was expected to be a part of this term. She just wanted to have a book and learn somewhat normally for a small change. Too much to ask? Sighing and noticing the dog at the front she shuddered but took a seat on one of the benches looking either way before waiting for Professor Carton. A small, very quiet squeak escaped her lips as she saw Professor Carton transform. Why on earth did everyone think that was the coolest transformations? She did not have a single desire to be an animal, although she might consider a cat, they were treated good. Yet, as a fifth year she had nothing to add to the discussion of spells to transfigure into animals, although she did agree with Fiona. Nodding a bit hoping that Carton would allow that to count as her answer too. |
The dog was their professor. And while that made good sense, Kinsay still didn't understand why they weren't allowed to pet him. If she were a dog, she'd want people to pet her. Maybe he didn't like being touched? These were all things she thought about as Professor Carton addressed the class. That and the absence of the hooded figures, for which she was very grateful. It was hard to concentrate when they were around. As for the question, Kizzy's hand shot up immediately. "Piscifors!" She paused for a single beat. "Professor? Can you teach us how to do it? Professor Peralta said you would." Not in so many words, but the Charms professor did tell Kiz to ask him about it, which was pretty much the same thing. |
