| | Second-Floor Corridor Arithmancy and the Headmistress' Office are the primary features on this arguably boring floor. Of course there are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore here, though the doors that fill the second-floor corridor, for the most part, open up to storerooms and vacant classrooms or offices. At least there are plenty of statues and portraits and a few suits of armour scattered about to make exploring a little more interesting.
Not far after stepping onto the second floor, the corridor opens up to a large, high-ceilinged foyer that branches off to the rest of the corridors on this level of the castle. One corridor containing a portrait of Bridget Wenlock will take you directly to the Arithmancy classroom; a large stone gargoyle can be seen in the distance down the middle corridor; and the other corridor will lead you toward an antechamber and, further down, the girls' bathroom. This part of the castle is not carpeted because of Moaning Myrtle's frequent habit of flooding the bathroom.

She was surprised Ashley wanted to be a streamer. That was a Muggle job, she thought. And what would she stream? Mamie didn't think she (Mamie) was interesting enough that anybody would want to watch her, but Ashley was much more interesting. "I...I don't know," she said after a minute of frantically trying to remember possible professions. Did she know what she wanted? Had she ever known? Mamie thought she had known what she wanted to be when she grew up, as a Muggle, but now she was at Hogwarts and there were so many more options! "Maybe play Quidditch?" She didn't have to get outstanding grades to play Quidditch. She did have to get better at flying, though...and that was hard without practice. "Quidditch is cool. I love sports so much. If I played quidditch, I would be a beater. Which is why I don't play quidditch." She looked down. Her thoughts swung back to all the things she had destroyed, all the destruction she had been on the receiving end of. She was burning down a forest. She was burning down a house. She was surrounded by acromantulas. She was being blasted off of her broom. She was being dragged through the air by her ankle. Someone was shoving her, and calling her a mudblood. There was a wand to her throat. She looked up. "I'm too afraid to hurt someone." Ash was by no means a pacifist. She had gotten in her fair share of duels and fistfights and verbal arguments. She meant hurting someone who didn't deserve it, by accident. She didn't want to do that. Too scary. |

"I think Professor Aguilar was a beater, and he doesn't seem like he'd want to hurt anyone either," she said quietly. Maybe if they got through this year and were ever allowed to fly again, they could play Quidditch together. Just for fun, nobody getting hurt. "I want to learn aaalll the positions!" she said, cheerful for a bright moment before she remembered. She wasn't even allowed to fly anymore. She let out a loud breath. It would be a lot easier to go along with the Neo-Alliance's "abandon all Muggle things" plan if she was actually allowed to do fun wizard things. |

I bet he's brave and stuff." NOT that Ash wasn't brave. "How else could you handle a class full of flying kids and try and stop them from dying horribly?" You probably had to be brave to be a professor. Was the real Trent brave? She had never met him. He was probably dead anyway. "Keep chasing that dream Mamie. If you learn all the positions they are more likely to hire you. Plus then you can flex it." If there was one thing she enjoyed this year, it was making pureblood supremacists feel insecure. And her favorite way to do that was to be better than them at everything. |

Aguilar was definitely brave. And smart. "Learning to fly is definitely dangerous," she said with a nod. Everything was dangerous, though, even eating.
She snickered at Ashley's suggestion that she "flex it." Like...she knew what the girl was talking about, but put in such a context...it just gave her a gut giggle reaction. She gave a sad smile, realizing she hadn't really laughed much this term. "I don't like showing off," she said. Showing off meant drawing attention. Mamie did not want attention. |

Which probably means that you shouldn't do it." It was fun though. Many people hated Ash, but nobody could deny that she was fascinating to be around. Sometimes, "fascinating" meant funny, interesting, smart, and kind.... and sometimes it meant "an interesting psychological case". But either way, it was fascinating. "What are you good at Mamie? Other than flying, apparently." |

Mamie had plenty of fun improving in private, and not showing off. It was why she liked choir, and why she had never tried to be the lead ballerina in her class shows. She did not want to be in the spotlight. "You're good at a lot of things," Mamie agreed with Ashley. She was not going to tell her friend that she got into too much trouble. They both knew that already.
The Hufflepuff shrugged. "I'm good at spells, after I practice them," she said. As long as she didn't have to learn them from a book, that is. |

The Hufflepuff shrugged. "I'm good at spells, after I practice them," she said. As long as she didn't have to learn them from a book, that is. It was true. Ash was good at EVERYTHING. Everything, except decisions. Financial decisions, she could do. Friendship decisions, she could do. High-pressure decisions, she could do. But there was a certain situation, one where it was dangerous and Ash wasn't scared yet, that she could not handle. That was what caused the most problems. If she had a wand to her neck, she could make the right choice from there. But she couldn't do the right things to avoid a wand to the neck. And that was her one weakness. And it caused SO MUCH PAIN, it was ridiculous. "Cool." Being good at spells always came in handy. Even if you were afraid of magic. "I like spells. They're good for when you are in tight situations and have exhausted every other option." When she was in a fight, her first choice was a fistfight. Doing chores, no magic. She only really used magic when she needed to, which was a lot. |

Turning people into ferrets, magic. "I should probably get back to the common room," Mamie said quietly, tucking her hands into her pockets. They had been standing here for a bit now, and she was always nervous about being in the hallway. You never knew how far away the Hooded Folks were. It was usually not far enough. And with them both being Muggleborns, she didn't want them to look "suspicious" even if they were really just jibber-jabbering away like two normal twelve-year-olds. |

Ash had a target on her head. Waiting for a reason. And dragging Mamie into THAT was a bad idea. And also, being in a hallway was a bad idea. BAD PEOPLE LURKED IN HALLWAYS! She'd said it time and time again. "See you Mamie. Keep safe, will you?" And with that, she made her dramatic exit. Right side up this time. But still equally cool, calm, and collected. Unsuspicious, etc. Not someone who needed to die or get crucio'd. Nope. Just a normal twelve year old. Nothing to see here. |

"Bye, Ashley." She gathered herself and headed off towards the basement, trying not to walk too suspiciously fast, nor too suspiciously slow. A real unsuspicious Goldilocks pace, for her. |
