| | Laundry Room Ever wonder where your dirty underpants wind up? Just down the corridor, not terribly far from the kitchen, the door to the laundry room can be found. What you will find in this room will, likely, not be a surprise. Within are no Muggle washing machines or dryers. Instead, front and centre, are large tubs with accompanying wash boards and sticks. A bizarre system of clothes lines fill the back of the room, beside which tables and large hampers await.
If you happen to wind up here on your House's laundry day, you will see your clothes -- hopefully labelled -- and the clothes of your fellow housemates being washed and dried by a team of house-elves. It is not uncommon to hear them bickering with each other or joining together in a motivational song to help make the job get completed quicker. First the clothes are scrubbed squeaky clean with soap and steaming hot water. They are next hung to dry and then neatly stacked on one of the large tables to be folded and placed back in the hamper to be returned to their owners.
Students are always welcome to be proactive and do their own laundry or at least lend the house-elves a hand. There sure is a lot of laundry to do!

She was pulled away from her old life to go to a boarding school where she was constantly in danger. It was dumb. ”I consider myself to be family-oriented, considerate, and trustworthy. I’m not sure that those traits would be super stereotypical for any house.” None of those traits really had a particularly strong association with any one house as far as he knew. He nodded in agreement about how dumb the stereotypes were. ”And that thing about Slytherins being purebloods. Maybe that was true in Salazar Slytherin’s lifetime but it’s certainly not true today.” Having one house that was originally centered around blood ‘purity’ was dumb anyway, epecially when the other founders had chosen other methods of pupil selection. The original Hogwarts students could have been both pure-blooded and intelligent, and they probably didn’t even have the sorting hat yet for that inaugural class to make the decision for them so maybe the founders would have had to duel over a student that two of them really wanted in their house. ”I don’t believe muggleborns are any different than the rest of us. The idea of blood purity is so dumb. It’s our talents and unique abilities that bring us here to study magic together, not our heritage. Besides, you probably had a magical ancestor somewhere way back in your family tree and I’ve got muggles mixed into mine. There’s no such thing as being a true pure-blood these days really. Pretty much every witch and wizard has muggles in their family line somewhere, even if you have to go several generations back to find them. So, in addition to the obvious injustices it’s just dumb to hate muggles because they’re just as important to our community as other witches and wizards. You know, people’s mums or dads or aunts and uncles or grandparents or great-grandparents or friends, and hurting those people who we love hurts us too.” Merlin, he was going to get killed for saying that, wasn’t he?

She learned that in science class. "Plus, if your parents are both muggleborns, that makes you a pureblood, I think. It's confusing." Ash liked this kid. "I don't hate muggles either. "I don't like muggles either. They don't use magic, and that makes them bad, and... um... bad, and like, not as good and stuff." She said it loudly, just in case. "Nice speech." Devin couldn’t help but smile back at Ash. This weird girl was really growing on him, and honestly he didn’t mind the weirdness too much. Everyone had their quirks that made them unique. ”Oh yeah, they’d be horribly inbred. I’m pretty sure some of the old pure-blooded family lines died out from all the health issues that they got from their inbreeding. Funny how their own beliefs on how they should continue their family line were what ultimately ended it.” That was karma if he’d ever seen it.
Honestly, Devin had no idea what the difference was between purebloods and halfbloods now because even those who claimed to be pureblood had muggles in their heritage. He knew his mum and dad were both magic, but neither of them came from any of the old blood lines so that meant he couldn’t be a full pureblood, right? Blood status wasn’t something his family cared about, so he hadn’t really thought a whole lot about how he identified in that department. It was all rather complicated and confusing. ”The pureblood supremacists who look down on muggles wouldn’t consider that to be pureblood, but they’re wrong to think the way they do about muggles and as we’ve said complete purebloods don’t even really exist anymore so I don’t really understand how we classify purebloods in modern times. It doesn’t matter anyway because blood status doesn’t mean anything. The only people I’ve ever heard about who cared about blood status were people who used it as a justification for discrimination and hate against muggles and wizards who married muggles. I’ll have to ask Professor Recard some time about how all the blood status stuff relates to modern society.”
Rescue was such a hopeful word, and a welcome one. ”I hope someone will find out what’s happening and send people to help us. No help will come if no one on the outside knows about it though. Whatever they’re telling our parents about why they haven’t gotten any owls from us this year, I’m sure it’s not the truth. Do you think they’ll even let us go home for Christmas?” Because evil masterminds never revealed their plans until it was too late to stop them. If his parents knew what was happening, he would be home by now and concerns would have been raised to the board of governors and the ministry. Nothing stopped headmasters from hurting students or implementing controversial policies like a mob of angry parents. Realistically though he was sure that no one would be able to stop Rosier and his followers until about a week before the end of the school year, just in time to send the survivors home for the summer holidays so they could enjoy their freedom before next year’s disaster.
Say what now? Oh, yeah, trying not to look like suspicious muggle sympathizers. ”Uh, yeah. We have magic and that makes us better than muggles. And muggles used to burn witches so we should be angry at them for that and, uh, burn the muggles too.” He played along with the cover in case Mr. Scary Headmaster and the hoods heard them.
Devin blushed sheepishly as Ash mentioned his so-called speech. ”Oh, thanks. It, uh, wasn’t really much of a speech, I don’t think. Real speeches have much more of an audience and don’t have to be whispered in secrecy.” He really hadn’t intended for his thoughts on the matter to be a whole speech.

I want to see my mum and my dad and my sisters again. My sisters are great.” He smiled, thinking about his little sisters. What were Nicole and the twins thinking of all this? Did they have any idea that the school had been taken over, and even if they did would they understand what that meant? At the very least they would have noticed that they weren’t getting any owls from him like they usually would. "And that's why bad things are coming for the muggles." Oh, he still needed to actually get the stains and smells out of his shirts. Whoops. He had gotten so engaged in conversation with Ash that he had entirely forgotten the purpose he came here for. He didn’t mind though; he had made a new friend. Should he get back to doing that while they talked? Now that he had spent more time talking to Ash, he was in no rush to leave her here alone again as soon as he could like he had earlier considered. He was quite enjoying her company. There was something comforting in the fact that other students shared his beliefs on muggles and the school situation when there was so much pressure from the school authorities to think otherwise or at the very least comply with their beliefs. Ash seemed like an interesting person, too.

Hah. Friendship with this kid: level one. Good mood for myself: successfully achieved. Quiet acts of defiance: check. Avoidance of looking crazy or weird: yup. ”Do your friends from home know that you’re here?” How unfortunate it would be if Ash were to be hurt or worse by the neo-alliance and no one back home would ever really know what happened. Devin was worried enough that his parents would never know the truth if anything happened to him because there would be a neo-alliance coverup, but what the muggleborns had to go through was clearly worse. He hadn’t even considered before what communications (or lack thereof) the parents of muggleborn students might be receiving about the situation at school. Even in a normal year, could muggleborns receive mail from their parents if they didn’t own an owl? Was there a way for muggles to send letters in the muggle post to the owl post office or a certain division of the ministry so the post could get forwarded by owl to Hogwarts? Or if their child had an owl at Hogwarts could the parents send a letter back with it after receiving one? If anything was being received by the muggleborn students' families, it was probably death threats from the despicable crooks who had the school under their control.
Ah yes, time to get back to his laundry so they didn’t look too suspicious just standing there whispering. ”Yes, of course I know the spells because I’m a wizard and doing laundry without magic is for muggles.” He couldn’t have done it without Ash’s help on the water and remembering which spells to use though. Really though some of the machines muggles had invented were just as impressive as magic, if not more. ”It really is amazing what muggles have invented to do things we do with magic, and even things most wizards wouldn’t have dreamed of.” Just think of all the things witches and wizards could have if people stopped being so anti-muggle and instead drew inspiration from muggles. Television, for example, felt like a large missed opportunity for wizarding entertainment. Living with the same technologies that muggles had hundreds of years ago but still claiming that wizards were somehow superior was such a backwards way of thinking. Oh, yeah, laundry. His shirts had been soaking in the tub for a while now. He had said he would use scourgify next, yes? Picking out the shirts with the worst stains in particular, Devin aimed his wand. ”Scourgify.” Hey, look at that. It was working to get the soup stain off his shirt.

He wasn’t sure that fancy was how he would describe Hogwarts though. Sure, the castle was nice, but he was fairly certain that a proper posh school wouldn’t be run by criminals and wouldn’t constantly put students in mortal peril. ”Witness protection?” That was not a concept he was familiar with. ”Muggle machines are a bad attempt at replicating magic. Real magic is far superior.” No, that just felt wrong to say. The disgust at having even said that was clear on his face. ”I don’t understand how people can look down on muggles. Muggle technology is quite remarkable, and muggles are people deserving of equal respect and dignity. No one deserves to be treated as inferior, regardless of magical abilities. The same goes for other things people get treated badly for too, like disabilities.” He learned that bit about everyone deserving respect and dignity from his mum. "There's a lot wizards could learn from muggles, too."

Yeah, those needed to be dried before he could really call the laundry done. ”Looks like it’s time to dry them.” Was there like a clothesline or drying rack or something he could move them to and blast some hot air on them? Or a way to vanish the water without accidentally vanishing the shirts along with it?

Duh. ”Yeah, um, good idea.” Devin moved his wet shirts over to one of the empty tubs where it would be easier to dry them. He was still slightly terrified that he would somehow mess up in a way that left him with no uniform shirts. Seeing as he couldn’t owl his mum to ask her to buy him new shirts and assuming students wouldn’t be allowed out to Hogsmeade this year either, accidentally destroying every single one of his shirts would not be an ideal situation. Given who his head of house was, he particularly didn’t want to have to explain himself to the man should such a situation occur. Hello Mr. Headmaster, I don’t have any uniform shirts anymore due to a laundry accident and you seem to have blocked off any way I could possibly get replacements so that’s why I will be out of uniform for the rest of the year was NOT a conversation he wanted to have. First up: ventus. Devin picked up one of his sopping wet shirts in one hand while pointing his wand at it with the other. ”Ventus.” Was it working? Maybe the spell just hadn’t been powerful enough, but it still felt kind of damp to him. ”Uh, maybe tergeo could help siphon off some of the excess water and then the air would work better?” See, he could have problem solving ideas too sometimes.

Problem solving was essential. Because the world they both lived in was a big lump of problems. No good things had happened to Ash in the wizarding world. Either the universe wanted to spite her, or the universe made a mistake. She was in the wrong place. Maybe the universe decided she was too happy with her life and decided to give her some *life experience*. |

Either the universe wanted to spite her, or the universe made a mistake. She was in the wrong place. Maybe the universe decided she was too happy with her life and decided to give her some *life experience*. Of course he remembered his very first impression of his fellow Gryffindors from the feast last year. ”Who could forget being sorted into a house of students who had managed to lose at least 15 house points by the time I even reached the table?” His housemates did seem to be quite a rambunctious crowd, often getting themselves into trouble. Naturally his first thought on arrival at the Gryffindor table was to wonder if they were always this rowdy. Turned out the answer was yes. No wonder the real headmaster had seemed like such a stickler for the rules when he had all the Gryffindors under his care.

Nobody wants to be in a house with me, I bet. Hogwarts houses or like an actual room. I am a cause of soooo many problems." She put the words "rotting the food" in air quotes. Because she didn't rot the food. She didn't know THAT much magic. Ash was just a magnet for trouble. It walked in the room, looked at her, and thought 'aha! My purpose in life! Make this child SUFFER! ahahaha...' Ash shut down that strangely unnerving thought real quick. |

Oh, so that one had been her too. What a year that had been. ”Spectral possession is hardly the fault of the possessed. It was terribly unfair for the headmaster to blame you for that.” He really didn’t consider that incident in particular to be Ash’s fault. Clearly the ghost was to blame, and Ash had merely been used as a puppet. ”You’ve been a real help in solving my problems today. In fact, I’m quite enjoying being in the same room as you.” Devin smiled at his new friend.

Ash was no longer possessed, and the headmaster was no longer hiding. No Ash was the one hiding. AHA. A joke! OR A COMPLIMENT! OR A REFERENCE TO PREVIOUS PARTS OF THE QUESTION! unclear. She laughed, and then gave a brilliant smile. "I would say that's the highest form of praise ever." Up there with being a good musician and being a tolerable person and being good at art. I enjoy being in the same room as you. THE FRIENDSHIP LEVELS! Ahhhhhhhhh. You know someone is friends with you when they know all the things about you and don't run away. True for muggles and wizards. |

I wonder how long they’ve been hiding.” Last year had he ever even known the real headmaster? It was concerning, to say the least, that Hogwarts had been infiltrated like this. The safety of the place where nearly every wizarding family in Britain sent their children to be educated had been compromised. From his limited experience though, these sort of things seemed to happen an awful lot. Last year it was an angry ghost, this year it was a cult. This was clearly something more malicious than the usual craziness that Hogwarts seemed to get away with without investigations, but Merlin did the school need to invest more in security. Devin smiled back at Ash, and couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle. This kid was someone he wanted to see more of. ”So, um, what sort of things do you like to do when you’re not in class or helping inept fools such as myself?”

There was all that graffiti in Diagon Alley. Plus the suspicious behavior from the headmaster last year." Ash had been doomed possibly from before she even got her letter. She did not like that thought. But now Devin was asking something about what she liked to do. Good distraction. What did she like to do? "I like to do sports, and hang out, and do art, and do music, and play video games, and work. Full schedule. I don't think you're an inept fool, by the way." It would be rude to let that comment slide, wouldn't it? She 100% needed to correct him on that one. He had avoided making Ash angry, and managed to calm her down somewhat, so he couldn't be that dumb. And you couldn't just let your friends refer to themselves as inept fools. That would be mean. |

Honestly Devin hadn’t associated the headmaster’s behavior with the events of this year until Ash pointed it out. ”I just thought Headmaster Trent was a bit odd.” Without any frame of reference for how the headmaster normally behaved, the headmaster’s strange behavior had gone right over his head. There had been some more concerning issues with the angry ghost at the time that had taken his attention. Ash didn’t think he was an inept fool! That was a compliment… probably. A grin spread across his face. ”Thanks. What kind of art mediums do you work with?” THE FRIENDSHIP!

People told me that he was normal the year before we showed up." She had actually wondered if it was polyjuice, but had dismissed the thought. Plus she wasn't exactly doing great mentally(being possessed), so she could be forgiven for not paying attention. She smiled. Fun question. SHe really, really wanted to say 'the BLOOD OF MY ENEMIES' or 'my own TEARS' but didn't really think that would make her sound normal at all. "I like marker, and pencil, and paint, and oil pastel, and lots of other stuff." ALL THE THINGS. "What do you do in your free time?" Wait. "Did I ask that already?" One of the few times she couldn't remember stuff. |
