| | |  HoM Lesson 1 - Ancient Greek Mythology
 Upon entering the History of Magic classroom on this crisp fall afternoon, you'll notice a couple of pictures on the board, probably hinting at the theme of today's lesson:
Or...maybe not? Seems like an odd assortment of pictures...
Either way, the classroom is laid out the same as it always is, in neat little rows with room for Gabi to walk around as she's lecturing, like she always does. The blonde is sitting on her desk in the front of the room, but even though she's smiling, she seems...tired. She's been that way for the last few lessons, actually. Perhaps having your work place taken over by a hostile group intent on muggle destruction isn't great for one's sleep schedule.
"Good afternoon class, come in and take a seat," she says cheerfully as the class begins to file in.
OOC: Hello all! Welcome to your first HoM class of the term! Remember, IC there have been MANY HoM lessons that your character has already attended, so they are already familiar with Gabi and how she operates. Ash walked "boredly" into the room. Looking bored is what you do when you don't feel emotions, right? Well Ash was feeling emotions, but ignoring them. The only giveaway to her discomfort was her face paling to an extreme degree when she entered the room. "Hello professor." Today is a bad day. Just like every day is. "Are we learning about how muggles are horrible and dumb? Because that sure looks like what we're learning about. Just like we learn every day." And honestly Ash couldn't care. Caring was for people who wanted to feel pain. And Ash didn't want to feel pain. She slouched into a random chair in the front and stuck her hands in her pockets. Were they learning about how muggles were blind or how muggles were dumb? She couldn't decide. And it didn't much matter.

Quinn walked into class clutching his History of Magic textbook. He had already read through decent portions in an attempt to glean some information about the situation at hand—and he did gain some information, but doesn't understand the big picture as of yet. Regardless, he's been able to participate in class a fair bit due to his reading ahead, and he wouldn't be surprised if today was the same.
"Good afternoon, Professor Recard." Quinn said as he sat down in one of the desks. A thought popped into his head as he did—Professor Recard was also the nurse so... perhaps he could pop by and see her sometime to ask about healing magic? Quinn had read up on that, too, though he hadn't been able to practice any. His wand was supposed to be especially good at it, and perhaps with the help of the Professor he would be able to practice and get at least fairly decent at some of the spells. It would be helpful if... something were to happen.
Quinn looked up at the board—a cyclops, the Loch Ness Monster and pegasi. Would today's lesson be on magical creatures that Muggles knew about through myths and legends? That's what it seemed like, at least.

Violet arrived at History of Magic in plenty of time. Since the rocky beginning of term, she had settled into a routine that worked well enough--and that bothered her. She didn't want for this new Hogwarts to start seeming normal to her. Having recently turned fifteen, she felt like she should had suddenly developed maturity, but in reality it seemed the other way around--her moods changed by the minute, and it was hard to keep her emotions under wraps, which she needed to do with these Inquisitors or whatever they called themselves always lurking around.
"Good morning, Professor Recard," she said automatically as she entered and seated herself. But on looking up at the pictures at the front of the classroom, she had to check for a moment to make sure she was in the right class and not in Care of Magical Creatures.

"Sup, Professor," Morgan greeted Recard as he entered the class. It was a cheerful greeting, though maybe a little more subdued than usual. It was hard to keep a Morgan down too long, but circumstances really were making a go of it.
He soon took a seat and leisurely sat back in it, his eyes finding the pictures on the board. "Oh, cool," he blurted out, mostly to himself. But maybe class would be interesting if they'd be talking about abraxans, kelpies, and... some sort of troll with one eye? It was no care of magical creatures class, but history of magic could be cool too, depending on the subject of the day.

Dahlia entered the room with a few minutes to spare. She had a thing with being early whenever possible. Especially now. Being late would definitely not have a good outcome. Not that she had to worry about it since she was early.
"Good afternoon, Professor," she greeted the women as she found herself an empty seat. Slipping down onto the chair she quietly took out her textbook from her bag and set it on the desk along with some parchment and her quill. If she would need them, she didn't know but they were there if she did.
With her things laid out neatly on the desk in front of her and her bag placed beneath her chair, Lia finally looked at the photos on the board. Interesting. Right away she was curious about the lesson but she tried not to let her thoughts get to far ahead of themselves.

Before the events of their first Care of Magical Creatures lesson, Kinsay James often went back and forth on how she felt about Professor Recard. On one hand, she never wanted to answer Kinsay's questions, but she was really nice (except for that one time she made Emm cry). Everything was different this year though. Professor Recard SAVED her sister and for that, Kinsay James would be forever grateful.
With that in mind, she always felt a little less on edge when coming into the History classroom. Professor Recad would keep them safe even if Kizzy could tell she looked sleepy. To be fair the only reason why Kinsay had been able to sleep the past few weeks was because of the mega-bed she had made with Emmerson in the dormitory. Did Professor Recard have a best friend? Maybe Kizzy would suggest she make a mega-bed with Professor Varma.
Stopping just in front of the board, Kinsay looked up at the photos for a moment or two before moving to a seat. "Hi." She liked the first picture best. What a silly looking cyclops. "Are we playing a game today?" That would be nice.

Two hooded figures stood at the front of the room, one on each side of the professor's desk. For now, the pair silently waited, watching.The one at the far end of the room scribbled something down on a piece of parchment while the one closest to the door tapped a wand (twelve inches, yew and dragon heartstring) against their hand menacingly, as if daring the arriving pawns students to give them a reason to use it.
The wanded one soon found that reason in the form of one insolent little mudblood (astrocat). The way she talked, one might think she didn't want to learn why muggles were "horrible and dumb". Then how about a manners lesson instead? A jet of light shot from the tip of the hooded figure's wand, and the child would soon find her tongue glued to the roof of her mouth. She would learn to hold her tongue one way or another. It was for the greater good.

It was unfortunately a routine that Valencia was now used to.
"Hello Professor." she greeted as she entered. She then glanced at the hooded figures and took her seat. She dated a parchment for her notes and left two little dots by the date. She wished she knew more about wands because it would be helpful to know if these were people she'd seen before.

Aboli quietly made her way to History of Magic. Recard's exhaustion was duly noted. Aboli felt only emboldened by it, like as a seventh year Slytherin she had to be strong for them. Recard deserved to feel tired - she probably had a lot more to deal with than any of them did.
She also wondered if she had had a chance to talk to Headmaster Rosier yet. At the sight of the hooded figures, though, she decided not to ask and merely gave her a polite bow of the head instead. "Good day, Professor Recard," she said in a stately manner before taking a place near Morgan, who greeted Recard in a way that made Aboli nervous, given the hooded guys nearby. "Be careful there, McCarthy," she offered gently, but without looking at him.

She actually hesitated for a moment to get a grip on herself. “Good afternoon, professor,’’ came the soft greeting, her gaze pointedly on the Head of House as opposed to the hooded figures. Claudine hurried away to select a seat at the very back of the room as usual.
Only then did she take a look at the pictures before the room. Bewildered, she studied them. What in the world were they learning about today? | |

Into the History of Magic classroom strolled Nem, tucking a book away into their bag as they went. "Good afternoon, Professor," they said politely, as they found a seat by the back corner of the room and got their things all set up for the notes they were unlikely to take. Nothing too out of the ordinary in their inscrutable demeanour today, no different from the rest of the term, which was in turn no different from the previous term. They'd noticed, naturally, that the Hug-a-Hoodie brigade were present, but that was hardly surprising at this point, and after spotting them out of the corner of their eye, Nem had gone on behaving like they weren't even there.
Act like you don't see them, but remember they always see you. A general guideline Nem was ostensibly operating by, and one they had seen fit to pass on to their little brother as well, though it probably hadn't been all that necessary. Couldn't be too careful though; the kid was a liability.
With their writing equipment all ready to go and textbook set to one side, Nem looked, not up at the pictures on the board, but in the direction of the window, and waited.

History of Magic.
Not sure what would come of today as she made her way into the classroom for today's lesson. The fifth year kept her composure together as she took a quick scan of the room. Her blue eyes immediately noticing the two hooded men sitting on either side of Professor Recard's desk as she waited for everyone to arrive. Her eyes not lasting on them for more than a mere second, not changing her calm expression as her attention was back on the professor to greet her, "Good afternoon Professor.."
Immediately occupying a seat for herself as she waited for the lesson to begin, noting that she was not too far from her friend Morgan, but did not greet him as she normally would have.

Comparing the topics covered in History of Magic to Muggle history class was probably the only time Mamie would agree with the Neo-Alliance that magic was better. She briefly hoped for just one class without the hooded scary folks, but was not surprised to see them as she entered the History of Magic classroom.
"Good afternoon, professor," she said, taking a seat next to Quinn.
She eyed the pictures on the board. The Loch Ness monster and...a one eyed ogre or cyclops or something, and some flying horses. What a way to get everyone wondering what they'd be talking about today. Magical creatures in history...could be discussing the Statue of Secrecy. Reasons to abolish the Statute of Secrecy and take over the world, probably. | |

Phoebe was feeling VERY fondly toward the Professor, who had managed to heal her so thoroughly after her last encounter with the goon squad. She smiled broadly at the woman, who actually managed to look casual and relaxed in the face of a very bad term. "Good day, Professor. Wow, Kiz, check it out! She has a picture of you up there," Phoebe pointed to the one eyed cyclops on the board.
And then she spotted the good squad lurking, and Phoebe's shoulders went up as she slunk toward a seat near Morgan. "My apologies for speaking out of turn, Professor." Just learn to shut up already, James!

Was she tempted to just skive off from lessons because of how uncomfortable the hooded figures were making her? Absolutely, but Gracelyn felt responsibility for making sure her friends stayed safe too, and that was what had led her to the next History of Magic lesson. There might’ve been a tiny hope that this would be one of the rare lessons not invaded by the Neo-Alliance. Which, she wasn’t entirely sure she understood what was so new about it, since the beliefs seemed the same as what she’d learned from previous HoM lessons or just idle reading. What with it being OWL year and all, although she was questioning if those would be normal now too.
In fact, she wasn’t surprised at all to see the two hooded figures flanking Healer Recard at her desk. By now, the hope was just the spark that kept her going, not a true expectation. “Good afternoon, Professor Recard,” she greeted, also like usual and accompanied by a polite smile, before she found a seat near Faye and therefore also Morgan. The latter of which she silently agreed with Aboli about. The hooded figures seemed to take everything very seriously after all. Keeping their heads down was much better. She’d much rather just learn whatever the healer wanted to teach them, what a cyclops ogre, a kelpie and the Beauxbatons Abraxans had in common.

Bernie came a little ways into the classroom and stopped to read the board/see what clue Recard had for them today. She did enjoy these little hints, and of course the picture of the CYCLOPS!! had her excited. She nearly opened her mouth to make some cheeky rhyming pun about mythology and Homer-runs and riding kelpies all the way to Beauxbatons, but then she saw them.
The hooded figures. Fun ruiners. Big snitches.
Well NOW she couldn't go and say ANYTHING even vaguely Muggle-ish, lest she acquire some stitches from the snitches. Her mouth now set in a firm line, Bernie settled for a mumbled, "Hello HealerProfessor," and went off to find an inconspicuous seat far, far away from the snitch brigade.
Her seat happened to be in the very back, directly next to Nem. Perfect. She might even be able to get a view of their parchment if she angled herself and slouched just right. Who needed to steal answers from Eiji Rasting when Nemesis Upstead, darling little angel-demon, beloved pet of the new headmaster, was available? Bernie even set up her desk JUST LIKE THEM.
What was the saying about imitation and flattery? Ah yes, it was essential to survival at Hogwarts.

Cece wasn’t going to say that history of magic was boring, because it definitely wasn’t always, but she ALSO wouldn’t say it was her favorite class. It was just that as a kid that was SUPER prone to daydreaming, particularly during the lecture-y part of lessons involving history, this environment didn’t exactly inspire lots of paying attention.
...What DID inspire her to do more of that were those hooded hexers who she was PRETTY sure didn’t have hearts. Yeah, she’d pay attention to avoid being on the other end of any spells they had in their arsenal and to make Professor R look good in the process. She was a gem. A GEM. And she’d helped Feebs, so Cece would keep her.
”Hello Professor.”
Finding a spot by Kizzy, the blonde offered her friends in the room a small-ish smile and waited for class to start.

Just in case anyone was WONDERING, Atlas had taken a trip to the loo before arriving and had cut down on his usual number cups of orange juice (five) at breakfast (to one). And it was a good thing too because the moment the Gryffindor stepped into the classroom...he wished he hadn't.
Atlas had not been the same since the incident with the jarvey and the vacuum that had made a home in his chest only expanded and intensified every time he saw them in class. Which...well...was very unfortunate since it seemed like The Hoods™ had literally nothing better to do than terrorize everyone's learning experience.
So Atlas did not greet the professor, he couldn't even open his mouth, and instead made for a seat in the classroom that positioned himself the furthest way from the Neo-Alliance members as possible. Even if it was only temporary, because you couldn't be menacing and imposing if you just stood in one place, it gave the Gryffindor a moment to breathe. A moment to not see a blinding jet of green light.
Head down, the blonde set to getting his things out and arranging his inkwell and quill on his desk just so.

Like the Headmaster says, it's for the greater good." Could you tell she kept sneaking glances at the hooded bullies? She was stealing glances at the hooded bullies. So much so it looked anything but natural.
Emm sank into the first seat that caught her attention, her feet unwilling to properly take her over to the one she usually had by Kizzy.
Don't draw attention and you don't get hexed like Ashley who still didn't learn anything. Only agree and never make it sound like you didn't mean it. "Professor, I dreamt I kicked a muggle in the shin." Emm continued, still eyeing the hooded men....women.....ducks? Seriously, what was under those hoods?
"It was satisfying--I blew them up, too." She added, eagerly. Totttaaalllllyyy not made up at aaalllllll.

Devin fleetingly glanced at the hooded figures at the front of the room as he entered, then shifted his gaze to the professor and pretended like the hoods weren’t there. ”Good afternoon, professor.” He sat down rather rigidly near Ash, clearly uncomfortable with the presence of the hoods but trying his hardest not to show his fear. They were watching everyone in this room, just waiting to pick them off. He was sure of it. With his mum and dad both being in perfectly respectable wizarding careers, as a healer and dragonologist respectively, he knew he didn’t have nearly as much to be afraid of as his muggleborn classmates, but he was still absolutely terrified. Devin looked at the pictures, each of which seemed to be a magical creature. Not just any creatures, but ones that had made their way into muggle lore. So, maybe this lesson was supposed to be about how muggles got everything wrong in their accounts of these magical creatures? He had come to understand by now that Mr. Scary Headmaster was making all the professors teach them about how bad muggles were. Morally he knew that he wasn’t above muggles, but he had seen what the hoods were capable of and what they were willing to do with students who dared defy them. For now he was going to hold his tongue, and he was certainly not going to suck up to the hoods like his housemate Emmerson seemed to be doing.

Avalon was no longer surprised by the hooded figures gracing each classroom with their presence. They seemed to be at every lesson nowadays. She found herself wondering why they didn't have anything better to do. Or perhaps they just enjoyed attending each lesson so they could inflict torture on anyone who dared to speak up.
"Good afternoon, Professor," she said tiredly, noting Professor Recard's apparent exhaustion as well. It seemed like everyone at Hogwarts was having trouble sleeping lately.
Avalon took a seat near Aboli and Morgan, giving her fellow classmates a nod. If they weren't standing right in front of her, she would have offered a sarcastic comment about the hooded figures to her friends. But alas, doing so could get her mouth taken away, or Merlin knew what else, so she settled for a halfhearted wave instead.

Yo, Kale didn't have anything to say to these hooded dudes. He wasn't going to be rude, he'd learned that lesson pretty thoroughly in DADA, but he wasn't going to acknowledge them either. They didn't even get a look from the fifth year. And it was obvious that he was ignoring them.
He shot a grateful smile at Recard who had been such a lifesaver in CoMC. He'd seen. He was pretty sure the whole school saw what she had done. "Hiya, Professor," he said quietly.
He managed to slip into an empty seat without looking at the board or the two hooded dudes that were hanging around like a bad hair day.
