Default Herbology Lesson 1

The sun is hiding behind the clouds, it's bleak around the castle, the weather is cold - and it's around the time you would have been planning your winter holidays if things had been....different. The doom and gloom is continuing, and despite the weariness Professor June felt over it all, she is waiting for you in Greenhouse One with a warm smile. Behind her is a table full of different vases with beautiful floral arrangements, and a tray with cups of hot cocoa.

Come on in, grab a cup, and settle down. Class will begin soon.

OOC: HELLO! And welcome to Herbology Lesson 1. IC - it will not be the first class your character would have had with Professor June. Please keep that in mind before posting. Oh, and hope you have read the rules!

Greetings + Question 1

It was cold and Lilith would much better be in bed, all cuddled up in her blankets, with a hydrating mask on and some tea. She'd even paint her nails.

SIGH.

It was time for Herbology, though. Lilith made her way to class, her hands gloved in charmed leather gloves her dad had given her one Christmas. Lately, she liked to imagine it was his warmth that held her hands. It made some days easier than others.

Today they were greeted with hot cocoa. Taking a cup, Lilith went to a spot on her own. Inwardly she focused on being grateful her matte mauve lipstick was smudge resistant instead of the impending doom of the hooded people invading their class.

Bernie's blue eyes flicked over to Pheebs and then back to Atlarries or whichever one this was, then back to Pheebs. She had no comments about the house-elf detention because, honestly, as she'd claimed in the armour gallery, she was on Dusting Duty.

Also, she was a bit miffed at Phoebe over that whole fiasco still. She knew if she commented on it, she'd get all in her feelings again.

And when had everyone all gotten hot cocoa, huh? Bernie missed some stuff sometimes, honestly. Blame it on the ODD.

BACK TO THE FLAMS---

She sputtered and blinked at the sudden shower, grabbing the proferred handkerchief and wiping down her face with it. NOT ONLY WAS FLAMSTEED SPITTING ON HER, but one of the other Muggleborns in this school, like her, had laughed so much that he squirted cocoa out his nose. Really, Quinn?! Where was the solidarity? To add insult to injury, IT WAS TOO MUCH, frankly. She had run all the way here just to be treated like THIS?!

AND THE PROFESSOR WASN'T EVEN HIS MUM SO REALLY SHE HAD TAKEN THAT SPIT-UP TO THE CHIN FOR NADA?!?!?

"I--- I'm done. That's it. I canNOT with these kids anymore."

She stood up in a rage, her hands balled into fists, her jaw clenched, beads of cocoa still dotting her eyelahses. Bernadette could have FLIPPED the table, honestly, she was SO STEAMING MAD, and MARCHED RIGHT OUT OF THERE, AWAY FROM THESE MADDENING PEOPLE.

someone stop her!!!!!!!!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Maybe Claudine was feeling very sorry for the rough time the Muggleborns were having that year at Hogwarts. Maybe it was because she had become somewhat outgoing. But was pleased when Minjae didn’t seem mad at her. A small smirk crossed her face. “Is it? I might have forgotten that fact.” Of course not. Claudine just liked referring to him as ‘Rich boy’. “It’s excellent. I don’t think it’s too late for you to grab one.” And there was the next seat on her other side being taken. “Great cocoa, isn’t it?” came the question to her dorm mate. Sensing movement on Minjae’s other side, she looked around. Mamie got a smile. Heath got one too and Claudine hoped he’d sit nearby. And the drama going on? She watched all the happenings with interest and a hint of boredom.

Avalon usually enjoyed the walk to Herbology—when it wasn't raining, of course. Traipsing across the grounds always refreshed her mind and cleared her head. But now, even that was ruined, as the Neo-Alliance had taken over practically every spare part of the castle....including the outdoors. Now, she hurried to class nervously, keeping her hand firmly grasped around her wand in her pocket, just in case. Her eyes darted back and forth for any sign of danger as she shivered all the way down to the greenhouses.

Normally, the flowers and hot cocoa would have done much to brighten her mood. But things just seemed so bad lately. She smiled half-heartedly at Professor Flamsteed as she entered and grabbed a cup, not wanting to come across as ungrateful. At least the professors were trying to make things more hospitable. "Hello, professor," she said with a wave before taking a seat by herself. She just didn't know if she had it in her for any pleasantries today.

Kinsay wasn't usually running late, but the House Elves had her on dish duty in between lessons. It was actually kind of fun and she didn't mind getting her hands all soapy (as her skill with magic was still... questionable), but it made her days feel SUPER rushed. Especially when she had to run from the kitchens to the grounds(!!!). Like TODAY! Maybe next time she'd ask real nice and the elves would let her leave a few minutes earlier. They probably wouldn't say no. The elves were real nice. Kinsay just felt bad sometimes asking for shortcuts because it wasn't fair that they had to do the chores all alone.

As she approached the greenhouse (panting a whole lot because she had just RUN all the way down here), she noticed Bernie marching out. "Psssssssst," she gave the older Gryffindor a pointed look. "Class is inside." See? Kizzy was helpful.

She also didn't want any more trouble with the Hoods(TM). Bernie was a muggleborn. Kizzy knew. And even though the older Gryffindor was horrible and mean, no one else could get hurt. This was something Kinsay had decided in her heart of hearts. So instead of letting the older Gryffindor pass by, Kinsay reached for her arm and began an attempt at pulling Bernie back into the greenhouse to join everyone else. "Did you just take a shower?" Her hair was wet. Did she know?

Bernadette COULD NOT BELIEVE her luck! In storming off in a strop, she just HAD to run into THE WORST OF THE WORST! Actually, scratch that, Atlarry was at the top of her list now for SPITTING COCOA ON HER! He had NO RIGHT! NONE! Never mind that she'd done that exact thing once before when she was around his age. HOW DARE THEY! THE YOUTHS! TAKING HER BEST MOVES AND USING THEM ON HER!

She opened her mouth to raaaaaaaaage at this kid, Kinsay James, may Merlin have peace on her soul after Bernie blasts it to smithereens with her favorite spell, when... well... she just cracked a little. She got all choked up. There was something in the way Kinsay was tugging on her sleeve/arm and asking if she'd showered... and even though KINSAY WAS PROBABLY TRYING TO BE MEAN TO HER, this... the whole little kid thing...it... it reminded her of her annoying little sister. Because it was also kinda mean and yet also kinda caring.

Bernie felt her big eyes welling up a little as she looked at Kinsay now. "Are you saying it LOOKS bad?" Her hair looked TERRIBLE, she could TELL IT DID. She anxiously reached up to pat-pat at it. Bernie didn't leave though, she did come back into the greenhouse and loitered by the door with Kinsay James. She dropped her voice to speak in a nervous whisper, her back to the rest of the class.

"Does it really look like I just took a shower because Atlarry Flamsteed spat his cocoa all over me and I think it's disgusting and----" She nearly put a hand on Phoebe's sister to lean in and cry, BUT DIDN'T. It wasn't her fault, was it?! She didn't deserve to be subjected to Bernie!TEARS. She WAS NOT SCHMOE!

Kinsay wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but she was on a mission to make sure that no one else got hurt and that was that. Sort of. She was usually the tugee and not the tugger. It was all very new territory.

Also new territory? Teary-eyed Bernie Grantham.

Kinsay was NOT expecting this. Not at all. It tugged on all of her heartstrings and the smaller girl found herself shaking her head profusely. It honestly didn't look bad. It was only the front parts of her hair that were wet. Also, if Bernie cried, Kinsay might cry too. She didn't know why she'd be crying, but sometimes seeing other people sad made her feel a certain sad way too. This is also why she momentarily forgot ALL the ill feelings she had towards the older Gryffindor. And because Bernie had dropped her voice to speak in a low whisper, Kinsay did the same.

"It doesn't look bad, I promise." And Kizzys didn't lie. In any case, Kinsay had an idea, evident by the gleam in her eyes, and began making quick work of undoing her Gryffindor tie. "You can use it as a headband. I think it'll help." Not only would it be a stylish fashion choice, but it'd also hide the wet parts of her hair. See? Inventive! Also. "Who's Atlarry?" It sounded like a combination of Atlas and Aries. Did she have trouble telling them apart too?

Even though Bernie was horrible and mean (yes, the kid held a grudge), she didn't deserve to be spat at.

Uhm.

Ilya was here, huddled in his perfectly pressed cardigan and wool trousers, his both hands wrapped around his cocoa cup (which was much appreciated). He didn't enjoy Herbology much, he found having to deal with dirt and--well, just this dealing with dirt, he found it unnecessary and anti-civilisation. Dirt is supposed to stay under your feet, preferably while wearing perfectly clean and high-end shoes. He was here for the cocoa.

... the cocoa and Bernie's dramatics. The older they got, the more interesting and attractive she was getting. Attractive in actions, not in looks (PFT, as if).

Ilya watched her storm away, his eyes moving from the kid to the professor. Ilya felt an urge to hex the little clumsy kid, it was a surprising reaction to the spectacle even to himself. But he swallowed down his irritation and dropped his eyes to his cup. Though his eyes turned reddish-brown instead of the calm blue, and the tips of his hair matched Bernie's momentarily.

Quinn had done his very best every time he came to class; having knowledge of mundane plants actually helped him with care for magical ones. They had a lot of similar parts, it's just a little bit more tricky to handle depending on the plant. But Quinn was always up for the challenge!

As he entered the greenhouse, Quinn smiled brightly at the professor. He made his way over and gingerly grabbed a cup of cocoa. "Nice to see you, Professor! Thanks for the cocoa!" he said, sipping on it a bit before grabbing a seat towards the very front. He glanced towards the flowers behind the Professor—would they be making their own arrangements today? Quinn bounced in his seat with excitement.
June's doom and gloom thoughts were slowly creeping in again, but as soon as the first student stepped in - she straightened herself and tried to be in a better mood.

"Hello! And not at all - be careful, it's rather hot"

Oh so it was definitely working. Smiling softly, June gave the girl a nod.

"I am glad you like it, Miss Fox. That was definitely what I was going for"

"Hello Professor Flamsteed" he greeted, still wondering if she was family from those gryffindor boys or if it was a mere coincidence that they shared the same name. He gave her a tired yet friendly smile before his dark brown eyes looked behind her at the beautiful floral arrangement.

He was not in the mood for a cup of cocoa though. He nodded his head at the Professor to show that he appreciated the gesture before he found a place to sit, giving a friendly smile at Ashley (and Quinn as well since they were seat mates) as he passed their seats and sat down by himself.
Oh? This one was not a fan of hot cocoa? They had something in common then.

Smiling still, June gave the boy a nod, "Hello"

And no, she was not going to insist on the hot cocoa - because merlin knew they were already being. made to do things they didn't want to.

Look at that smile. It made June smile too.

"Just waiting on you lot, Mr McCarthy" And he too got a nod, "Be careful, it's quite hot"

“Rich boy,’’ the Slytherin muttered by way of greeting. Only this time, calling him a ‘rich boy’ didn’t come out condescending as before when she called him that. Her tone was friendlier. “Not in the mood for cocoa?’’ And that was all she would say to him for now. Didn’t want to overdo the chatter, did she?
This one too got a small nod and a smile, "Hello, and not at all. Enjoy yourself"

But no, they were stuck in this horrible, dangerous place and who knows what new horrible things these people were planning. Violet was tired, tired of avoiding the skulking, hooded figures, tired of hearing professors and students insulting Muggle-borns, tired of the resentful looks on the Muggle-borns' faces, and tired to death of having to watch every single thing she said or did for fear she would get in trouble. Most of all, she desparately missed keeping a journal--this was the first time in her life she hadn't since she was old enough to write, and it had cut her to the heart to have to burn the one she'd brought to school at the beginning of the year. But this year, she didn't dare--she couldn't risk someone seeing what she really thought, and she refused to write lies in her journal.

Would they even celebrate the holidays at all this year? Probably in some horrible, bigoted, frightening event that Violet couldn't even imagine. But at this point, Violet was shaken out of her gloomy thoughts by the sight of the flowers and cocoa that greeted her as she entered the class. She couldn't help but smile a little as she greeted the teacher. "Hello, Professor Flamsteed--brilliant idea," she remarked, raising the cup she'd just picked up in the teacher's direction before she made her way to her place.
And this was exactly why June had made the small gesture of hot cocoa. Noticing the slight change in Miss Blackthorne's smile, June simply gave her a gentle nod too.

"Thank you, Miss Blackthorne. This weather certainly called for this lovely drink, didn't it?" Other things did too, but they were not going to be mentioning that at all - at the moment.

If weather was her only issue though, the dark haired Ravenclaw would have had no issue but with everything else going on, she simply had a look on her face that was middling. Not quite happy and not yet sad. Sure, everything was just doom and doom but she at least was trying to not let it get to her completely.

Upon entering Greenhouse One, Ingrid returned Professor June’s smile with one of her own and a friendly “Good morning Professor”, her eyes briefly passing over the vases for a moment before resting on the cups of hot cocoa. Taking a cup, her hands cupping around it instantly, she went and joined the rest of the students, unsure exactly who most of them were.
"And a good morning to you" More smiles! June was slowly forgetting alllll her worries - even if only for this particular class.

Aboli had to constantly rewire her thoughts so she didn't carry a completely and abysmally miserable aura around herself. She did NOT need people feeding off of her energy in a negative way. This term had brought about a LOT of meditation in Aboli, more so than she had ever done before at school. And LOTS of practicing...without her gloves on. It was not going well without the usual contact she kept with her mentor, but alas. It would be fine, right?

She approached Herbology, her face drawn to a blank, her lips forming a straight line | and her eyebrows furrowed ever so slightly. It was cold, she was shivering, and she was not looking forward to Herbology today. She didn't know why, but she just...her heart....it wasn't into it. She eyed the hot cocoa, making a split decision to skip it for now. It was thoughtful of Professor June, but...eh.

She didn't feel like drinking something so sweet right now. She also tried to stick to a corner by herself. Aboli Song was not in the mood for conversation.
June had not been expecting to change the world with her small gesture, so this - she wasn't entirely taken aback by one Aboli Song. Nonethless, June offered her a warm smile, "Morning, Miss Song" There was no rule that said the professor's couldn't greet their students.

A quick pop into the kitchens to ask the elves for food and that was that. She still didn’t trust that her halfblood status held any sort of protection for her, after all. It was taking a lot of distractions by way of tumbling or yoga to keep from looking absolutely haunted.

The weather wasn’t helping, but it wasn’t hurting either. She’d just wrapped herself in a cozy scarf before heading out to the greenhouse for the Herbology lesson, since she knew the interior would be warm. It was just the trip there she needed to stay bundled up for. Plus, she was fairly certain Professor Flamsteed wasn’t someone she needed to be wary of, aside from maybe when it came to the actual plants.

Either way, the flower arrangements had put a genuine smile onto the Hufflepuff’s face as she unwound her scarf. These days, an actual genuine smile was rare. “Hi Professor Flamsteed! Thanks for the cocoa,” she added, taking a cup before going over to a seat not far away from squirrel boy (Morgan). No real reason, either. Maybe safety in numbers, but she’d merely taken a sip from her cup as she settled into her seat.
B]"Hello! You are most welcome, Gracelyn"[/B] So far so good. "Settle down quick, we'll be starting soon"

Uneventful was all June wanted.

So she had her fingers crossed too.

"Hello," she greeted the girl, before gesturing at the cups, "not a cocoa person?"

Luckily the greenhouse was warm! And there was hot cocoa! She pocketed her gloves and gently seized a cup with both hands. "Hi, Professor," she said shyly. Only shy because of being a little embarrassed of how grabby she had been with the kindly provided beverage. She took the tiniest of sips, so as not to burn her tongue if the cocoa was too hot. "The cocoa is tasty, thank you very much."

See? Mamie was polite.

She took a seat by Minjae and a couple of Slytherins. They looked older. They'd protect her if the Hooded Squad showed up.
June, on the other hand, thought nothing of her grabby behaviour. She instead smiled at the girl, and encouraged her to take two, if she must.

"I am glad you like it, Miss Turov"

"Hello, Professor. Thanks for the cocoa. It is CHILLY out there." She huddled over her cup. "What have the house elves got you doing, Bern? I've been polishing door knobs and it is pointless because every darn person in this school has fingerprints to leave everywhere."
Oh look, it was her star student. The older James.

"I know, right?" June nodded, looking out the window. "It was quite a task just getting out of the comforts of my blanket this morning" June had never been a fan of the cold. It made her lazy. And she hated it.

Not something they could solve now, of course. Not with Herbology to attend. Joy of joys.

Pausing just inside the door of the greenhouse to rub some warmth into their fingers (fingerless gloves and all) and pull off their hat, Nem gave the place a quick once-over and waited to be rid of the chill that had hold of them. Didn't appear to be happening.

"Professor," Nem greeted the Flamsteed Singularity, disregarding the cups of cocoa entirely. Zeroing in on a free seat, they strode across the greenhouse to sit a short distance from Song, seeing as she seemed to want to distance herself from the rest. Nem didn't acknowledge her with any more than a brief look, and simply sat with their fingers tucked into their bespoke crocheted hat as it rested on their lap.
Speaking of star students, June smiled as Nemesis joined them - only to go find a seat next to Miss Song.

Were they sharing certain energies today? It sure looked like it.

Nonethless, they too got a small smile, before June turned to look at the time.

Five more minutes.

He walked over to the other side of Aboli unconsciously. He too wanted some distance from others for now.
June would clink his cup with hers, if she liked hot cocoa. Alas - she simply smiled instead.

"Enjoy, Mr Fuller"

The barn to the greenhouse was much closer than anywhere she could have been inside the castle but she still had to run a small portion of the way. So when she finally arrived, on time to her own surprise, her cheeks were flushed pink and she had long shoved her hat and gloves into her bag. Her scarf was untied around her neck.

Don't mind her as she caught her breath, making her way into the greenhouse. Oooh, was that hot cocoa! It wasn't needed right now but Lia gladly took a cup from the table with a bright smile directed at the Professor. "Hello, Professor Flamsteed, thank you for the cocoa," she greeted warmly between deep breaths, adding quickly, "How is Nina doing?" Since the very first time she had stepped foot into the Professors garden studio and had met 'Nina' the plant, Dahlia had taken a great interest in her.

With a cup of cocoa in hand, the first year slipped down onto the seat of the first empty chair near her. The cup was set on her table and her things for the lesson were taking out and placed nearly on the table as well.
Oh look at that, it was her little helper.

"Hello, Miss Donovan - how are you this morning?" she greeted the girl. "And Nina is doing great. Thank you for asking" It sucked that she had to have such a horrible first year, but at least she was smiling right now.

Something he couldn’t block out? The sight of flowers and hot cocoa as he entered the greenhouse. That got a very slight smile from him. It wasn’t often that they had treats in lessons. Come to think of it, he couldn’t remember it ever happening before! Then a thought occurred to him. Was the cocoa actually part of the lesson? It couldn’t hurt to ask. “Hello, Professor Flamsteed,” he greeted. “Thank you for the cocoa. May we drink it now or do we need it for the lesson?”

He picked up a cup of cocoa but didn’t drink it yet, just in case he wasn’t supposed to, and took a seat. After arranging his supplies on the table in front of him, he was ready for the lesson to begin.
On a normal day, June wouldn't have offered them this drink - especially because of her no food in class policy, but times were tough - life was tough. Rules barely made sense these days.

"Hello, Mr Jones. Please feel free to drink it now. It is merely to warm you guys up - since the weather is so cruel today" And other things, but they were not going to mention it. Nope.

A quiet one? No matter, she too received a smile - as June finally got up to close the class door.

"Just in time, Miss Sinclair" June smiled at the girl. "Doing alright today?"

But, that was besides the point.

So he had made his way at a light sprint down to Herbology today and entered the greenhouses with a smile on his face. His smile faded just slightly seeing Quinn was already occupied with seating, but it was hardly enough to dampen the lightness he felt in seeing Auntie June Professor Flamsteed. "Hello!" he chirped with an almost giddy tone and bounce to his step before making his way over to a vacant space juuuuuuuuust adjacent to Quinn and company and near an older Gryffindor boy he...was pretty sure was called Morgan.

And it was ONLY because this was Auntie Jade and they had a signal to alert him that she was who she claimed to be that the first year had taken a cup of hot chocolate. Because he knew that it was safe. Though, for now, he just held it in his hands and let the warmth tickle his palms.

Bernie fell into the empty seat beside Atlas with a SIGH. "Jog much?" she wheezed at him. She should probably start exercising regularly for reasons such as how would she ever be able to outrun a first year on a school trip buuutttt maybe next year. Anyway. Bernie also waved to MF and Quillnn before she actually poked Flamsteed's arm.

"So since that's your mum teaching us, can you help me get an E or what in this class." Well it was meant to come out as a question but Bernie was NOT an idiot, okay, she knew they were related. Except sometimes when she was.

How humiliating. Again.

"S-S-S-Sorry...it...hot...I...uh..." The cocoa. Obviously. Yes. His hot chocolate had been too hot and that was why he had spit it out in her face...it was a good story to use and he would stick to it for now. Reality was that his face was hold, scalding, thinking about Auntie June as his MOTHER. It made him miss mum terrible...because if mum were here she would have taken out at least half of The Hoods™ by now...because she was that skilled. She had taught Defense Against the Darks Arts, REAL defense against the dark arts and not these anti-muggle studies masquerading around as the subject this term, and was one of the stronger women he knew. "Auntie...I mean... P-Professor Flamsteed isn't my mum...she's m-my auntie. H-Her dad is my dad's dad's brother..." He was patting his pockets looking for something, anything, to spare himself a bit of bad mojo and thankfully was able to produce handkerchief for her to clean her face with. He DID catch Quinn's wave and smile while he was wallowing in his discomfiture and offered a sheepish one in return.

While June was terribly fond of her nephews - they could be real idiots. A point Atlas just made as he spat all over Miss Grantham. What in the world? The class hadn't even started yet, and there was hot cocoa in someone's face. Before she could intervene though, the older girl was storming out.

"Atlas Flamsteed, what did you just do? And Mr Kingsley, I fail to understand why you think blowing cocoa out of your nostrils is so amusing" she stated, completely at a loss why her nephew would have done such a thing, and boys in general were so gross and found gross things so amusing, "Mr Kingsley, clean yourself up, and Mr Flamsteed - go out there, apologise to Miss Grantham again and bring her back - " but whatever she had been saying, it all got cut off when the older girl returned - right with the younger James.

The exchange between the two didn't go unnoticed either. It was the sweetest thing. It warmed her heart. A thing she wanted to achieve in her lesson today too. "You look lovely, Miss Grantham. Please stay." she said softly, before looking at Kinsay with a smile - clearly appreciative of the girl's thoughtfulness. "Thank you for joining us, Miss James. Please grab yourself a cup of cocoa, and settle down so we can begin"

Moving on, June turned to face the rest of the class.

She assumed other than the incident of boys being idiots, the hot cocoa had done it's job. They all looked warmed up, and a little red in the cheeks too.

"Alright, class. Now that everyone is nicely warmed up," she started, "what can you tell me about floral symbolism?"

Ilya raised his eyes from the cup upon the professor's question and light scolding. Pft, she basically did nothing. He wanted to roll his eyes... and he did so, eyes still reddish-brown.

Floral symbolism? He spoke from over his cup, the steam going directly into his nose with the lovely smell of cocoa, without raising his hand though. "Just like any kind of symbolism, I believe. Analogies with a mental twist. Flowers and humans. Flowers and runes. Flowers and elements. So on and so forth." And just for giggles, he focused to change his straight hair locks to small curly ones resembling a flourishing tree, only for a moment.

He totally didn't know if his answer was correct or not, and he didn't care much for providing a correct answer as much as he cared for speaking out his mind.

Delaney had always enjoyed Professor Flamsteed's lectures. She enjoyed them even more when hot chocolate was involved. Who wouldn't. Extra points for the unexpected free entertainment involving Gryffindors being spat on.... Well back to the lesson!

"Doesn't that mean that like different types of flowers have different meanings or messages? My Grams used to say that you could use flowers to speak a whole other language if you were smart enough," Delaney didn't know much about flowers. They were never interesting to her; pretty to look at for a few days until they started rotting and left a mess all over the tabletop. But she did know that even Muggles used flowers sometimes to leave different messages...

Cece tried to channel Cappi’s insane plant skills in pretty much every Herbology class ever, so it was with great restraint that she didn’t insert herself into the Bernie situation, which was hard seeing as her dorm mate was very clearly upset and in need of some quick hair care repair. Her poor hair. Instead she sat quietly, trying to remember all the plant things while also wondering why on earth that little Flamsteed dude had spit his hot chocolate all OVER the Bern.

Plant symbolism. Plant symbolism...OH! Hey, she did actually know something about this. The color of the flower you give to someone can be symbolic. Like roses, well, a red can mean ‘I love you’ and a yellow can represent friendship.”

"I'm doing well, thank you." The day hadn't gotten to much underway as of yet but she had seen all of her siblings and cousins at breakfast and managed a quick trip to the barns. So as of this very moment she didn't have much to complain about. Hearing that Nina was doing well made her smile and brightened her morning up a touch more.

Dahlia tried not to focus too much on whatever was happening with the cocoa or whatever. She had completely missed where Atlas had unintentionally sprayed cocoa in Bernie's face and Quinn shot cocoa out his nose. Therefore all she had to go by was bits and pieces of conversation that she was able to pick up on. Not that it was any of her business at all but she just hoped no one had gotten burned with the cocoa.

Speaking of which, Lia picked up her cup cocoa off the table and took a small tentative sip. Yep. It was perfect. Exactly the right temperature to warm her up from the inside out and not scold the top of her mouth. With a few small sips warming her up even further, she set the cup down again.

Floral symbolism. She knew what flower symbolism was. And floral had to do with flowers and how they were placed together, right? Lia gave the question a few moments consideration before raising her hand. "Flowers have different meanings and so does the color of flowers. Certain types of flowers are best for certain occasions. So... if we arrange different types of flowers together in a group we would be creating a more specific meaning for them?" Her answer wasn't supposed to sound so much like a question but there it was.

Is that what they were going to be working on today? Flower arrangements?

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash hid a smile ad the hot cocoa incident went down. It was funny, but she couldn't show it because then Bernie would be sad. She distracted herself with "floral symbolism" and stuff. "If you really didn't like someone, you could send them a bouquet of 'I hate you flowers' or dead flowers I guess. Personally, I would send black roses. To show that they are dead to me. But some people like to- y'know, put toxic stuff in their I-hate-you bouquet. Toxic like aconite. I find that a little extreme." A bit darker than the previous answers, but perfectly valid.

Avalon was relieved that the hoods were nowhere to be found, because she had a bad feeling that they would be all over punishing this Bernie-Quinn-Kizzy-Atlas mess. And she did feel bad for Bernadette. If that had happened to Avalon, she would have been mortified. She considered sending some sort of hair-fixing spell over the Gryffindor's way, but it seemed like Kizzy had it covered with her tie. Not exactly Avalon's choice of fashion statement, but it was a nice gesture.

Now flower symbolism was something that Avalon knew quite a bit about. Her grandmother had a green thumb, and all the hours spent in her flower garden resulted in a wealth of knowledge about different blooms. She decided to build on her classmates' answers by giving some examples. "Some people call it floriography, which means the language of flowers. It refers to how you can convey a certain thought or emotion to someone by giving them a specific bloom. For example, camellias are often flowers of admiration, while hydrangeas are flowers of gratitude. And sunflowers are flowers of joy." Whoever came up with those meanings in the first place, Avalon didn't know. But it seemed to make sense. Sunflowers were so cheerful and happy, no wonder they symbolized joy.

Don't irritate me... Curtis stared back at her, expressionless. It was no secret that he liked when she took her anger out on himself. But that wasn't always on his mind around her, especially today. Seeing that Nem kid on the other side of her reminded him of a previous situation he had himself involved with. A hint of a smirk appeared briefly if one were to pay close attention to his looks before being covered by the cup of cocoa he sipped after turning to face forward... Still bland, but refreshing.

Now, what was going on with Bernie and the other kids? He sipped more cocoa.. Shame she was muggle-born, the worst of her luck never seemed to cease. Curtis took his wand to wordlessly re-fill his cup before the Professor asked the first question. Easy.

"Floral symbolism derives from way back before the 1800s when flowers were used to help convey messages that couldn't be said aloud and today still does so." Curtis answered, "It's not something many think about until you wonder why red roses make you think of romance firstly. Every flower has been given some sort of meaning and are used for many designated occasions over it."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Drama Llamas, that’s what that lot were. Whatever. At least it didn’t involve her. Claudine continued to enjoy her cocoa and the company of the few persons she had around them. Mamie, Minjae and Fiona weren’t receiving judgy looks from her. Anyway, she eventually busied herself by retrieving the writing materials that would be used today. Not a moment too soon for things were getting started on the professor’s end.

Dark eyes flashed towards the arrangements behind Flamsteed. The question slightly explained the arrangements’ presence. Claudine’s understanding of the said question was exactly as the answers that came in. “Giving someone flower arrangements is usually a gesture that aims to portray the giver’s feelings for the receiver during a particular situation. Like during the loss of a family or at an anniversary time.’’ Yes, the Snakette’s hand had been raised though it had been lowered the moment she started to provide her answer.

Watching the drama abruptly unfold between Bernie and Atlas and Quinn, Ivy was at least glad Kinsay showed up just in time to help Bernie out.

But then the lesson was starting, so she quietly sipped her hot cocoa as she listened to the question and the answers the other students provided so far. The language of flowers and their symbolism was actually a pretty interesting topic, at least to her.

"I've read that sometimes it's not only the types of flowers and their colors that convey meaning," she said, raising her hand, "but also how they're worn. Like, if someone wants to date you and they give you a small bouquet of flowers indicating that, then depending on how you wear it tells them whether you like them back or you just see them as a friend."

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Minjae had moved his position from leaning his chin on the table to crossing his arms and leaning back in his seat. He shook his head no at Claudine’s suggestion to grab a cup of hot cocoa as well and instead greeted Fiona and Mamie as they took a seat near him as well.

While he waited for the Professor to start the lesson, the Hufflepuff watched with mild interest as the drama unfolded itself in front of him. He might have thought it was a brilliant scene seeing Atlas spitting his cocoa out in Bernie’s face. He wondered what the older Gryffindor had said to not only get the younger Gryffindor to spit out his cocoa but also for Quinn to fall in a fit of cocoa spilling laughter.

Had things been different at Hogwarts and he hadn’t been tired both mentally and physically he might have laughed along but… He looked at Claudine instead for a second and rolled his eyes. Drama Llamas for sure.

Since he hadn’t drank the cocoa he was not nicely warmed up. But he had an idea. He took out his wand from and with a complicated wave he non-verbally casted the hot air charm to warm himself up.

Floral Symbolism. This was something his mother was in to. Every time she received a bouquet of flowers from a client in her prosecution office she would check the flowers to see if they were thankful or not. Minjae had never understood this because a lot more people picked out flowers to give because they were pretty and not because they had a “meaning” ”The color of the flower is probably more important than the flower itself. Because they say it conveys the emotions of the one giving the flowers. For example a red rose means “love” but a crimson red rose means “mourning.” he said after raising his hand in the air. Seemed like he had picked something up for a change.

Default been here all along
it's either adhd or wrackspurts <3 <3 lily luna's mom has got it going on

Herbology wasn't where Eden excelled. She just wasn't the nurturing type, and the few times she'd attempted plant parenthood had resulted in death and destruction. It was worse now that her and Quinn were on awkward terms - before, she'd felt comfortable coming to him for homework help.

Now, however, it seemed like he'd moved on to hanging with boys and doing gross boy things like squirt hot chocolate all over innocent bystanders. Not that Eden didn't chuckle herself.

Cup of hot cocoa in hand (Professor Flamsteed was the only reason she didn't loathe Herbology), Eden tried to come up with an answer that would satisfy the teacher. Some of her classmates had some...fun...answers, but Eden's mind was blank. "When you get married, whoever catches the bouquet of flowers is supposed to get married next..."

"There's this whole, organized language of flowers in a lot of times and places--one of my uncles told me about it. He called it Floriography, it's like this whole secret code where the kinds of flowers and the way you arrange them can convey messages to someone else," Violet answered.

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie's eyes widened as that Flamsteed first year spit hot cocoa at Bernadette (what a waste of cocoa!) and then the older Gryffindor stormed off. It was a really good thing the Inquisitorial Squad wasn't in class today. Luckily everything got calmed down and Professor Flamsteed started class.

And they were talking about flower messages or something? Mamie sipped her cocoa and listened to everyone's answers. She didn't know you could send a message with flowers. Those Hooded Squad People weren't here to learn about flowers...she wondered if they could use them to send s e c r e t messages. Or to secretly learn things. Mamie felt like everyone had a lot of secrets lately.

She frowned at Minjae's answer, though. Weren't crimson and red the same thing? Mamie raised her hand. "Professor, if flower symbolism is so sensitive to color, what if someone can't tell the difference between two colors and misinterprets the meaning of the flower?" she asked.

Phoebe watched in horror as Bernie tried to leave the classroom, and then... confusion when her sister managed to stop the storming off. Kizzy and Bernie were not a good mix on even the best of days, but they were speaking the same language today. Apparently.

She sipped her cocoa and hoped Bernie would sit back down... what was this about flowers? "It's just sentimentality, professor. Like those flowers mean something to someone because we've assigned that meaning, but they don't have an inherent meaning of their own. Or maybe more like... secret codes. They're a way of communicating because people didn't always have the ability to just say what they mean."

Bernadette was NOT going to cry, alright, she was not not not not going to cry.

She was, humbly, going to accept Kinsay James' tie, wrapping it around her DisGosTinG hair so it looked more like a headband, nodding at the younger girl (again, humbly, a strange feeling for her to be sure) and then making her way to a seat. She left the one beside Atlarry and Phoebe open because she didn't particularly want to sit by either of them in this moment, and also because maybe Kinsay would rather sit there.

Look at this.... consideration from The Berns. Increds. Truly.

She settled into a seat near Merlin Knew Who (pls, feel free to claim her). Bernie didn't even look at the people near her new seat as she kept her eyes down, subdued. Very in her feelings. And look, the topic being discussed didn't exactly help. Curtis' answer? Wow. Good, but so romantic. Gag. Avalon's answer? Brilliant, but when wasn't she? Even Minjae and Phoebe had good answers, but all Bernie could think of was the color yellow and how it represented friendship. And someone had probably already said that, hadn't they? She'd stopped listening, unfortunately.

A Poop * k8 *

Curtis' glance in her direction was enough to make her want to hex him. It was just that sort of mood she was in. She tightened her fist, her gloves makin that scrunchy, leathery noise as she did, and she did NOT raise her hand.

Flowers.

Right.

She didn't know anything. And even if she did, she didn't feel like raising her hand. Lots of other people were bringing up good points. It DID make her think about color changing roses, though, and how she didn't know much about them in general even if she had seen them countless times in the greenhouses.
