 After descending a narrow spiral staircase accessed through a door on the left side of the Entrance Hall, you can immediately sense a change in temperature. In spite of the numerous torches that are scattered along the stone corridor, the warmth emitting from the flames isn't enough to keep those goosebumps at bay. Movement is your best source of heat down here, so you had best keep on walking forward at a brisk pace.
Going further down the long, gloomy stone corridor branches off to a web of more corridors that are just as long and even gloomier. Portraits depicting the most esteemed pure-bloods of the past adorn these walls. Some are covered with cobwebs, but others will follow your every move with judgmental eyes -- if you are not of a worthy blood status or a Slytherin for that matter, many of these portraits will shout out snide comments at you. Pay no attention to them, however; you have better places to be and things to do, such as exploring the underground chambers or attending Potions class.

The Slytherin found herself in the corridor of the snarky portraits, as she called it in her head. It was surprisingly empty, and so she was pleased. She shrugged her robe off her shoulders, letting it billow to the ground with a rustle. Her wand was drawn, but she had grown into the habit of carrying it clutched in her hand as of late.
With a memory in hand, Aboli gave her wand a flourish. "Expecto Patronum!" her voice was loud enough to echo in the empty, dark corridor, but she hadn't yelled. A sheet of mist and cloudy, swirling smoke emitted from her wand tip, and she pulled her wand back as she huffed in frustration. The smokey substance seemed to dance down the corridor before evaporating completely. How could she possibly ever manage this when she felt so utterly miserable?

Hufflepuff Fourth Year | Mamie was going to go looking for Aboli anyway, so... Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!
Mamie was trying to find out where the entrance to the Slytherin Common Room was. Not because she wanted to go inside, no, but because she needed help with her homework, and Aboli had offered once to help. And Mamie didn't want to be a burden, but...she also wanted to pass all her classes. She didn't want them to use her grades as proof that Muggleborns didn't deserve to be at Hogwarts, or something.
She heard something echoing down the corridor, and tried her best to follow the sound. Surely someone wandering around down here meant she was getting closer to their common room, right? She gave a smile when she turned the corner and spotted Aboli with her wand out.
"Aboli!" she said happily, hurrying over to the girl and holding up her Defense Against the Dark Arts notebook. "Can you help me?" | |

Once the sad patronus was gone, she tried again. Maybe she had to think of her recent "date" with Noah. The one that when she thought about, it made her cheeks go red. It was with those burning cheeks that she let out another "EXPEcTO PaTRONUuuuM!" The mist that shot out from her wand seemed thicker, more solid than before. Was that the HEAD of an animal?! Maybe??? Was she just HOPING SO HARD to see a shape that she was making shapes of nothing more than lifeless mist?!
The voice rang out, and Aboli turned with all the quickness of a paranoid seventh year Slytherin student. "Levicorpus!" she cried, the spell aimed right at whoever had disturbed her peace. Her eyebrows furrowed, and her face was hardened stone. "Who is spying on me?!" she called out before realizing..
GOODNESS.
IT WAS MAMIE!

What was that spell Aboli was learning? Why was she making mist? Mamie wondered if she was learning a spell so they could make the Neo-Alliance unable to see---
WAHHH! Mamie yelped as she was yanked off her feet by Aboli's spell. Up..upside down? She was upside down! Mamie shrieked once she realized what was happening. Et tu, Aboli!? What a betrayal! Mamie thought they were friends! Had Aboli decided she hated Muggleborns too, now?
"WHYYY?!" Mamie screamed, dropping her notebook to the ground and waving her arms in an attempt to right herself. She shrieked again, not at all liking this whole...dangling upside down thing. | |

Aboli almost IMMEDIATELY ran underneath Mamie and undid the spell so that she could catch the girl when she fell. And when Mamie DID come crashing down, Aboli fell as she caught her.
"AAAHHHHHH!"
Her AHHHH echoed up and down the corridor, some of the portraits holding their ears as it did so. Some of them had also begun to notice Mamie was a Hufflepuff and were sneering at her audacity in showing her face here. Aboli hadn't noticed, though.
No.
"Are you okay?! Did I hurt you?!" she sat up, patting Mamie's sides in a worried manner.

Mamie sniffed as she sat up, trying to recover a hint of pride from both having been unceremoniously yanked upside down, and unceremoniously...dropped. Right onto Aboli, apparently. Was that the best way to get her down? It must be, because Aboli was very smart. So if Aboli hated Muggles and Muggleborns...oh no, that meant there was probably a reason. If Aboli agreed with them, that meant the headmaster and the Hooded Folks were right. So caught up in her spiraling, Mamie didn't actually hear Aboli's question or notice her concern. She was a little bruised and flushed, but the emotional pain was worse.
Anywayyy, she sniffed and crossed her arms, trying to scoot away from Aboli's patting, along the cold dungeon floor. And...now the portraits didn't like her, either? She stuck her tongue out at one of the portraits. Take that.
"I-I-I thought we were friends," she whispered, absolutely crushed that she had misread Aboli's many previous kindnesses. Had that been before Aboli knew she was a Muggleborn? She supposed the Slytherin knew by now. And Mamie had really thought Aboli was on the side of everybody has value, but noooo. Aboli, Big-Sister-She-Never-Had-Aboli, had hexed her. There was clearly only one explanation for what had just happened.

"What?! Of course we're friends! That's why I feel so bad!" she determined that Mamie was all right and tried to...detach herself from the Hufflepuff. "I thought you were....one of the other students coming to spy on me. Like....people who might be with the hooded figures," she lowered her voice, looking around nervously. She had no idea what all was going on in Mamie's poor little head right now!
There were just certain students she noticed seemed all too keen to buy into the agenda Rosier and his goons had brought in with them. And she was nervous around some of her peers because of this. "I'm glad it's you. In fact, I can even show you some stuff if you wanna' stick around." She brushed her own hair flat since catching Mamie and falling to the ground had sort of...messed it up.

Oh? They were friends? Aboli didn't hate all Muggleborns? Mamie stopped pouting immediately and gave Aboli a grin instead. "It was an accident," she said, finally nodding in understanding. Accidents were immediately forgotten and soon after forgiven. No. Wait. Other way. Immediately forgiven, soon forgotten.
She squinted her eyes as she tried to understand why Aboli was worried about people spying on her, though. What was Aboli doing that she was worried about being caught? Mamie wasn't sure she wanted any part in something dangerous. But...she had come down here to find the older girl. And she did need her help with...something or other. Mamie's notebook was behind her on the floor, out of sight and mind.

Mamie was precious. Aboli wanted to protect her at all costs. Literally.
"Of course it was. I wouldn't levitate you for nothing." She shushed the nearest paintings being RUDE and gave them a GLARE. Hufflepuffs were great, honestly. If anything, Gryffindors were the troublesome ones. Except Noah. And even then, Noah COULD be dumb.
"Maaaagic. Helpful magic should you ever get in a bind," she grinned and held up her own wand. "I figure you should have a chance to practice. Since..." well, she looked around at the portraits. "Since our defense class looks a little different this term is all." She tried to play it off as suuuuuper casual.

Mamie gave a skeptical glance toward the portraits that were being rude, that Aboli shushed on her behalf! If the older girl was worried about students spying, why wasn't she concerned about portraits spying? Especially after what had happened with Bernadette and the non-pureblood portraits upstairs? Did Aboli remember them almost dying, hmmmm?
"Do we have to do it here?" she asked very quietly. She would practice here, but...maybe there was an empty classroom or something where they wouldn't have to worry about people sneaking up on them or portraits being obnoxious. The music room, maybe? It was soundproofed. "I'd like to practice."
She couldn't very well turn down this offer, considering Aboli was right, she hadn't learned many new defensive spells this year. And--she spotted her notebook and grabbed it back--considering she had come looking for Aboli to get help, with defense class things. "What was that misty spell you were doing?" Could she teach Mamie that? | |
