Nem could have easily spent the rest of the lesson exploring memories - there were certainly plenty of them to pick apart, maybe they'd try to get their hands on a pensieve - but continued keeping an ear out to see what they were doing. Mention of the Freezing Charm almost sent them back into their own head again, but then something made them stop, and instead provide an answer. Sort of.

"If you wanted to turn someone into a decoration for a building," they said, voice flat. Not even deadpan, though this would have been the moment. "You could frieze them."

The melancholy in the 11-year-old's body sort of shot out of his gangly frame as the professor moved things along. Was this a hint about things? Or did the professor just REALLY like the Freezing Charm because she was suddenly talking more..spiritedly. Blinking a few times, Atlas diverted his attention again towards the older Ravenclaw girl and then followed her gaze towards Kinsay who...he still was not entirely sure how he felt about. The Gryffindor was finding out that he knew how to hold a grudge pretty ferociously...but also it was hard to hold a grudge against someone who was being locked up like she was.

His morals felt all over the place. ALL over.

And then the slightly older lioness spoke, addressing something the one crass Ravenclaw had said about sharks, and he found himself a bit dumbfounded. But in a good way? Unaware of his own brother's intentions, Atlas promptly decided that he had moved on to his next unrequired crush. The noble defending of sharks...which then derailed Atlas from the whole topic of the lesson despite the professor having his attention only a few moments earlier thanks to her enthusiasm on the subject. "Also, sharks aren't attacking you. They are mistaking you for their natural prey, like a fish, because you are invading their natural habitat. Cows are more dangerous! They will coordinate group attacks!" Oh right. Lesson. But someone had already mentioned about freezing animals that were charging at them so...he was simply offering up an example of that.

Obviously.

Aboli slowly raised her gloved hand. "If you're being attacked by an unfriendly animal. You can freeze it to get away," Aboli offered, thinking of the Dragon field trip debacle recently. :|

And that was that. Aboli grew quiet again.

"Good example, Miss Song. Creatures are not always approachable and if you find yourself faced with one who is trying to defend itself, its young, or its territory, you might want to keep this spell in mind."

She probably couldn't, given she never had her wand outside of class. As to when the freezing charm would come in handy, Mamie knew that one immediately.

From experience.

"The Whomping Willow," she said, hand raised. Though she probably couldn't cast it on the whole tree. Maybe even just a branch that was coming your way could be frozen, so you could get out of the tree's reach.

This was the answer she'd expected and Neva nodded in approval, glad someone had mentioned it. "As anyone who has ever watching the whomping willow would know, that particular tree's movements are unpredictable and dangerous. This spell can be useful if you ever find youself standing too close. Good."

It was one of many skills she picked up when being taught by her mother over the years, last year especially. So when Kinsay focused her attention on Tavie the older girl reciprocated, offering up a small smile to her friend.

She missed her friends so much that it crippled her when she thought too much on it. So much so that just the simple act of opening up her heart enough so that Kinsay would know that she too was dearly missed, was almost too much.

It was why she missed the first question and why she couldn't give a response for ways to use the...freezing charm? Something. Whatever.

Miss Stark was awfully quiet today and Neva took note as she walked by the fifth year's desk, tapping on the top gently. Quiet was okay as long as she could manage to pay attention.

As for the next one... It didn't take long to think of a situation this spell would be useful. She raised her hand. "If someone's about to attack someone else, the Freezing Charm would be useful for stopping them before they can."

"Exactly. This spell would be useful in a duel with a friend, or in a dangerous situation with a foe. Its one you want to learn and practice so that you've got it mastered. Good."

The freezing charm was a weirdly aggressive one, in the Gryffindor's not-so-humble opinion. And the horrible gut feeling in his tummy just knew it'd be twisted later in the lesson as some way to punish adversaries and more specifically Muggles.

So, he opted not to play into that hand yet. Like his tickling charm answer, Kale answered, "Firework goes off. Looks fantastic when it first bursts but kinda wimpy as it fades away. Wonder if you could freeze it when it first explodes to sorta keep the burst of light in the sky longer."

Neva couldn't help but smile a little. There was an innocence to this answer that made her a bit wistful and she nodded her head. "Creative, Mr. Trent. I can't say I'm aware of anyone who has tried this, but I imagine it might work, yes."

Sorry to be late, been dealing with post-storm issues IRL (could use some magic myself this week)

"Good thinking." Neva nodded enthusiastically. "This spell would certainly come in handy against, say, a swarm of bees coming your way. Buying time in situations like those could be the difference between life and death, depending on how many creatures you were dealing with."

Apparently Immobulus was the spell of the day and the professor wanted to know what the spell could be used for. What Cam would like to use it for was to stop the bad guys in their tracks. There were more students and professors than hoodie guys. How she wished that they could just Immobulus them all.

Snapping back to reality, Camryn raised her hand and began to give her alternate answer. “You could use the spell if someone threw an object at you. You could stop it with the Immobulus and keep yourself from possibly getting injured.” Of course Protego might be the best way to go in that situation, but it was always good to have options.

"That could work, yes. You'd need to be quick with your wand, but it would defintely be worth a try." She smiled a little and nodded.

Looking up wearily at Peralta, as though expecting she was in some form of new trouble with The Hoods. It took her about five seconds to fully register the words and the fact that they were focusing on the Charm she had named. Claudine went from weary to delighted. She loved this particular Charm!

A hand went up. “I know it can be used to render Muggle burglar systems useless.’’ She lowered her hand as she hastily added, “That’s another inferior and silly device they have created since it’s no match for witches and wizards.’’

Neva was a little worried when Miss Blaze mentioned the muggle device, but Claudine seemed to recognize the danger there and managed to save the Charms professor from having to step in. "Precisely, yes. Thank you." For the answer and for preventing herself from getting hexed.

But in case she ever needed to defend herself in the corridors, these were good to know.

"If someone was falling, you could use Immobulus to stop them. It'd be particularly helpful if you could freeze them with it right before they hit the ground. To absorb some of the shock." Not the best spell to use in that situation, but if you were in a pinch, it could be useful. "Arresto momentum would probably be a better choice, but if you needed a minute to think or prepare a better landing spot, a freezing charm could work."

"It's always good to have lots of spells in your repertoire, especially in stressful situations where you might not be able to come up with the ideal spell in the moment. A backup or substitute can certainly be useful."

Had to keep throwing her brain at the books and hoping some small something would stick. Enough that made this whole thing worth it.

"Um. If you're asked to herd Muggles during Defense and they all start panicking and won't be herded, you could just drop them with the spell and move them physically."

This...yeah. Neva had heard about that horrible lesson and those poor muggles and she was just thankful she was good at keeping her expression neutral as the hoods would surely have something to say about a furrowed brow or frown.

"This spell would come in handy in a situation like that, yes. Thank you, Miss James."

Still wimpy and fearful of just about everything that could happen to him in this school but...eh...might as well. He probably wasn't going to make it. "You could freeze your Alarm Clock and get some more sleep." What a dumb answer! If he was still sleeping in a bed he usually kept his wand at his bedside table next to some clock. Why not just hit the clock. It's extra work to use magic. Magic was terrible.

This was along the same lines as Miss Blaze's answer and Neva nodded. "This would stop the alarm, yes. At least for a while. Good."

SPOILER!!: Shark bait hoo haha Friends and reply
Miss Fox was pushing her luck and Neva had to bite her tongue to stop herself from saying something that might call the hoods' attention to the girl. Her patience was certainly waning, though. At least she'd put the marker away. For now.

While she hadn't planned for a class debate, it seemed like both Miss James and Mr. Flamsteed had strong opinions about Miss Fox's answer, so she let their opinions be heard. Maybe a better conversation for creatures class, but at least they were actively participating. She'd take it.

No. She was powerless, then. Probably. Feeling the professors gaze, she put away her marker. Then she rested her hands on top of her chin and stared right back, her right arm now covered in marker. Hi, professor. "If there was a shark chasing you, you could freeze the water around it and it would be stuck." She flushed. "It's a feasible situation if you live on the coast." It was true. Ash had seen sharks before. Most of them weren't that scary. They were little. But some of them were big and scary and fast and could take your limbs off or worse. It was a feasible scenario for her. "Or if a person was chasing you in water or a boat, you could freeze them too." That was especially feasible.

And though Kiz still wasn't feeling up to answering, she still wracked her brain for something worthwhile to contribute. Just incase. She didn't want any trouble, she really didn't. It wasn't until Ashley spoke that Kinsay felt brave enough to raise her own hand, this time wearing a DEEP frown! "A shark wouldn't chase you just because," she pointed out defensively, turning to face the other second year. It was important that she knew. "Sharks are only misunderstood, Professor." She nodded adamantly, turning back to Professor Peralta now. "People are only scared because they don't know. But sharks don't like to hurt people usually, not unless you're horrible to them first." It was really, really important that they knew. People always thought sharks just like to attack, but they really didn't! You were more likely to die in a vending machine accident than by a shark attack!!

She was going to suggest using immobulus for playing games like Freeze Dance! But she was already feeling a little embarrassed for speaking earlier, so she stayed quiet instead.

Obviously.

"To stop the movement of the ocean would require a very powerful witch or wizard. I do think using the spell on the shark itself might be more useful to you." And yes, it could be used to stop the motion of a person or boat. She nodded her head.

"As for the points Miss James and Mr. Flamsteed bring up about the nature of sharks and why they act the way they do, I have to agree, though I don't think this is the right venue for such a discussion. I like that you're both thinking, but let's try to stay on topic." She offered all three a small smile before moving back to the center of the room. It was time to move on.

"Thank you for your answers, everyone. As you can probably tell, there are many uses for this spell and it is an important one to master. Now we're going to do a bit of practice. The incantation is immobulus, said like Ih-Mo-byoo-luhs, and the wand movement goes like this-" She raised her wand, demonstrating so that everyone had a clear view. "Now to practice this spell, you're going to need someone to practice on. I'd like you to partner up. Practice the incantation and wand movement a few times before taking turns casting the spell on each other. Please use Finite to put an end to the immobility once you've successfully frozen your classmate." Simple enough, right? "If there are no questions, you may begin."

OOC: Hello hello! We're moving on to the practice portion of the lesson. For this, you simply need to have your charrie 1. Partner up with another classmate and 2. Practice casting Immobulus! If anyone has any questions or needs Professor Peralta, please let me know in the title of your post! Class will be moving on to the main activity in about 48 hours

astrocat 03-01-2021 11:54 PM

Ash shrugged. "Of course sharks don't chase people usually or on purpose. Who said that? If it were trying to bite your arm off, it would be unusual. There are lots of unusual things that still happen. Like getting... like being..." taken hostage. She broke off and turned away. Getting possessed was unusual. Being an arsonist was unusual. BEING TAKEN HOSTAGE WAS UNUSUAL. Most people didn't worry about being brutally murdered every second of their lives. She walked over to the corner and said rather flatly, "Whoever wants to be my partner can cast on me first." She certainly didn't care. Could you cry when under the effects of this spell? Let's try it. She certainly couldn't punch anybody. Maybe it was better that way.

With death avoided, Claudine listed out uses for the spells that came from her classmates. It always blew her mind just how many possible answers there could be, some of which she never thought of herself. The shark answers really did amuse her but she carefully kept a neutral look on. Didn’t want anyone, aka The Hoods, to think that she was enjoying herself way too much, did she?

Not that it would matter now for here came the practice time. The Snakette really felt as though there was no need for her to practice but she’d go along with the instructions. Oh, and she’d need a partner, which she supposed would be one of the Room folks. Luckily, the younger Ravenclaw beside her spoke up. “I'll be your partner, Ashley."

“Immobulus. Immobulus.’’ The incantation just flowed off of her tongue. As for that wand movement? It was practiced exactly as Peralta had demonstrated; once, twice, thrice.

Right.

C was all set to practice on her lucky partner.

Waddles 03-02-2021 12:11 AM

Mamie was also confused by the shark talk...why were they worried about sharks? She did not plan to go swimming anytime soon, much less in an ocean. She watched closely as Peralta demonstrated the spell and emphasized the syllables for their pronunciation. And then...they got to practice! Mamie's favorite part! She was fairly certain she could get this spell quickly, even though her parents were Muggles.

She hopped up from her seat and looked around to see who would want to practice with her. Ashley? Nope, Ashley was taken. "Anybody?" she asked quietly.

"Great." The amount of emotion that was not in that sentence was insane. "Let's practice, Claudine. You can try the spell on me, and then leave me here forever. Great? Great." She stuck her hands in her pockets and just kinda stood there, waiting for the spell. Could they hurry it up please? She wanted to be immobile already. Forever. Life would be so easy if you didn't have to move. Or think. Or talk. Or interact with annoying people. Or go to this class. Or ever meet another professor, hood, or annoying student ever again. H U R R Y U P. Please. Pleaseeeee. Why couldn't she have a different life? As a muggle, preferably. Then she would actually be with people who cared. Well, person who cared.

Violet looked up as she heard Mamie's low voice, and figured she might as well partner up with her. "I'll be your partner, Mamie. You can even freeze me first, if you like. Though I guess we should practice a bit first." Violet had taken out her wand (which felt so good back in her hand!) and made a few passes of the three-step wand movement the Professor had demonstrated.

Aweeeeeesome. Practicing spells. Cool cool cool. Aboli didn't wanna.

After watching people pair up for a moment, she tucked some of her hair behind her ear, making it a little frizzy from the material of her gloves. How irritating. She glanced around for a partner, though, and felt her stomach bubbling with....nerves. Nerves from her recent inability to produce decent magic. What good was she without it? Just some booksmart seventeen - ALMOST EIGHTEEN - year old with a stupid gift she didn't even want?

And then, she immediately felt guilty for thinking that magic made a person valuable. Because...well, that wasn't true, and it was just the line of thinking that the Neo Alliance had planted in everyone here. It was scary; damaging, and scary.

"Anyone...want to pair up?"

Mamie was relieved to pair with Violet and not somebody too, too much older. She smiled a bit at the girl, then also practiced the wand movement Peralta had shown them. "Immobulus," she said, relaxing her pronunciation to allow the yoo vowel. She repeated it a few more times, then looked back at the third year.

"Are you ready?" They had talked about consent in transfiguration, so she wanted to be sure Violet was comfortable being frozen before she cast the charm. She was...only momentarily distracted by Aboli looking for a partner.

Didn't Aboli already know this charm? Didn't Aboli know every charm? Nope, her focus was on Violet. Totally focused. Ready to freeze her. When the older girl said it was okay.

Phoebe wasn't sure how the littles had the passion to argue about sharks at the moment, but she sort of appreciated that Kizzy wasn't broken. She was still Kizzy, and the other ones piping up around her in defense of sharks were still themselves too. That was good, right?

But Phoebe wasn't feeling very unbroken at the moment, and she found it hard to shift herself to find a partner for this activity. She'd get to use her wand! That was... nope, not enough to stir her enthusiasm. "I'll be your partner, Song. Might even be an even match for you, and if not... I sort of fancy a nap." Getting cursed seemed more appropriate at the moment, but she suspected taking a tumble without being able to catch yourself was still pretty unpleasant.

anyone want to partner up?

There weren't a lot of things in this world that could've pulled her out of the big sadness that was their lives right now, but sharks were, evidently, one of the few things that could. Kinsay wasn't trying to debate though. She really wasn't. There were just somethings wrong with what Ashley said and it was important that she knew. Kinsay didn't expect someone to jump in and add to what she said though, so when Atlas (Aries? No, Atlas) did, she wore a look of complete surprise.

Especially seeing as... things between them were... y'know.

She gave him a tiny smile, before turning her attention back to Ashley who received an unimpressed sort of look. Her point made no sense! Kiz had more to say on the matter, but it looked like they were moving on to partner work and Kinsay didn't really want to fall behind. So instead of saying anything else about sharks, she looked for someone to work with. She was kind of hoping to work with Phoebe, but when her sister joined Aboli, Kiz instead looked over towards the side of the room where Tavie and Atlas were sitting.

Look it wasn't because William was suddenly feeling like he could finally confront Kinsay or anyone else for the matter that he took this chance. They were in class. He needed a partner to practice magic with even if he didn't want to cast any magic at all. This was charms class they were expected to do it weren't they?

He walked up behind her and tapped her on the shoulder. "Hey, you can practice with me. Okay? I'll let you cast first." He said nothing else. He just had his wand out and was trying to run through the incantation in his head now. Looking at his wand while he could still be allowed to hold it during class and would only make eye contact with Kinsay if she responded and wanted to partner with him.

O__O

Kinsay gasped (quietly)! The tap from behind gave her the SPOOKS! You could never be too sure with the Hooded people all over the castle. And though the tapper wasn't a Hooded figure, it was Moose, which was almost just as surprising. "You scared me," she whispered quietly, before standing up and nodding.

Except. She didn't want to go first because... what if she couldn't get the spell right? It'd be so embarrassing. "I think you should go first though." Please? Her spells always.... did things they weren't supposed to do. She used to try to practice after dinner to get a better handle on magic things, but that wasn't really possible anymore. Kinsay spent so much time away from her wand, that everytime she was given it back, she worried it'd forget all about her. Wands could tell these sorts of things, did Moose know?

The quiet gasp had made him recoil his hand briefly because he realized he probably should have gotten her attention from up front. He would have been just as shocked as her if someone did that to him now. "S-sorry. I didn't mean...I mean...I'm sorry." He was so ashamed of himself now for doing that. He was a terrible horrible Muggleborn. This was a mistake.

No no no...He can't go first. He already asked her to go first. Besides he was still trying to work on the incant.

So....two things. That one Ravenclaw girl was scary. Atlas could not pinpoint as to WHY he felt this...but he did. There was a little bell and whistle that went off whenever she spoke though and that was DING DING DINGING right now. The second was that the Gryffindor was still not sure why Professor Peralta was yelling. It wasn't...well...his magic wasn't going to respond based on volume. Trust him, maybe, because he had experimented a little with this and him yelling the incantation actually did not help. It just made the wand dysfunction more embarrassing since everyone was staring now.

BUT...this was a spell he HAD done a little bit of independent study on since it came in handy with the whole moving objects that you had summoned and maybe had summoned to you a little too fast and then they might break your face if they were to hit you so you better stop it. Ahem. And Finite he had learned from Bernie! Only, well, he still wasn't all that GOOD at it. He was better at starting things than he was finishing them, if you know what we mean.

"Immobulus...Immobulus...Immobulus...Immobulus..." he hummed to himself while conducting his wand rather casually, and lazily, while glancing around the classroom as people began pairing off. Oh...right...he needed to find one of those too. So, like a little wandering puppy including those big ol' pleading eyes...Atlas meandered in search of one.

Anyone? He...well he couldn't promise he wouldn't be a disaster but he could promise that he would try his best?????

*Looking for a partner and sees Atlas*

Fiona was admittedly quite disappointed when she found out that the class would be practicing a simple freezing charm. However, she kept her expression neutral and she began to look around for a partner. Soon her eyes fell upon walking disaster Atlas. Sighing heavily, Fiona made her way to him.

"Want to be my partner?"

Kolyander 03-02-2021 02:47 PM

Partner?

This first year Ravenclaw had been perfectly content taking notes. All these spells would eventually come in handy at some point in time. The more she knew, the better. Nothing was going to change how she felt about wanting to learn as much as she could about everything.

Learning immobulus was all fine and dandy but she wasn't completely thrilled with knowing they would be casting it on one another. Not nearly as fun as turning into a creature. Lia removed her wand from its holster and got started with practicing the proper movement first. Once she was able to get that right which took a couple of tries to truly get comfortable with it, she was ready to move on. "Immobulus, immobulus, immobulus." Over and over again until the incantation flowed easily from her lips.

Now all she needed was a partner. "Does anyone still need someone to work with?"

Snagging Dahlia

Camryn listened to the answers that her classmates gave and the ensuing.......debate. Of course people always had strong opinions, so that was not exactly a surprise. Now though, it was time to get to work. Cam wrote down the incantation and wand movement for the Immobulus spell in her notes. Then she started to practice. Since they would be practicing on each other, she did not want to make a mistake.

Starting with the incantation, Camryn said it very carefully, making sure to pronounce the word correctly. “ Ih-Mo-byoo-luhs, Ih-Mo-byoo-luhs”. Then when she thought she had the hang of it, she tried it a little faster. “Immobulus, Immobulus, Immobulus”. Finally she felt comfortable saying the important word so it was time to proceed to the wand movement. After practicing that several times, it was time to find a partner.

“Anyone need a partner? Anyone?” Anyone want to put their life in the hand of a first year? Spotting Dahlia, who also seemed to be searching for a partner, Camryn approached her. “Hi. Do you want to be partners? You can freeze me first, if you want to.”

anyone want to work with avalon?

Avalon truly didn't know how people had the energy to debate about sharks right now. Really, given the circumstances at Hogwarts, everything else seemed like a trivial issue. She tiredly listened as everyone contributed their answers, jotting down a note on her parchment here and there.

She couldn't say that she was particularly excited about being frozen in place, but she supposed it was all part of the learning process. "Anyone want to work together?" At least there wasn't a huge risk of her messing this spell up. The Ravenclaw felt pretty comfortable with it.

Kale Trent really didn't love the idea of using this spell on his classmates. This whole term was the most grotesque form of abusing magic, but at least immobulus was most innocuous. So, the fifth year wandered over to Avalon and managed to force a smile, which was getter harder and harder these days, "Yeah. You mind working together?"

He drew his wand, the one he so rarely held now, and said, "You wanna go first?" Kale didn't mind.

Kinsay shook her head, mirroring his shame without realizing it. She didn't say it to make him feel bad. "It's okay." It really was. She wasn't one of those people who said things just for the sake of saying them, incase anyone thought otherwise. Even the incessant things had a purpose, okay?!?

Anyway, Kiz was reaaaaaaaaaaaally hoping that Moose would go first with the spell. Maybe if he did it wrong too then she wouldn't feel as terribly about the inevitable disaster that hers would be. Not that she wanted him to mess up, but sometimes it helped when you didn't have to feel so alone in making mistakes. But... when he admitted that he didn't want to go first either, Kizzy deflated a little bit. Oh no.

She did have an idea though. It's called the art of distraction and what you do is avoid trying the spell at all costs and ask the Professor questions until time for the activity runs out so that you don't get into any trouble for it. Except. Just as she was about to suggest this, she paused. Usually she could just practice the spell later and it would be fine. But now that her wand kept getting taken away.... Um. "Okay... I'll go." It was a tough decision because she didn't want to look silly, but she didn't want to waste her chance at finally using her wand. So. Ih-Mo-byoo-luhs. She could do that. "You should pose so that you'll look cool when I freeze you." If she managed to freeze him.

Aboli, too, could appreciate the resilience of the younger students. She wished she had half of it. The lack of ability to understand the seriousness of situations...must be nice. She had to admit that her brother did not suffer the same optimism. Or rather, he suffered BECAUSE he didn't. Depending on how one looked at it.

She glanced Phoebe's way and simply nodded. "I dunno about that. I've not been up to par lately, James," she sighed and eyed Phoebe's hand. Her wand hand. "What's the spell? Immobulus?" Easy enough to say, and probably normally easy enough to do, but Aboli...wasn't sure she'd be able to manage it. And to think she had been worried about getting ALL the spells prior to her year level nonverbally. Pfffffft.

The discussion about sharks would have interested him if he did not have more pressing matters to think about. Now though, the shark talk made him lose focus and he stared in front of him, lost in his own thoughts and not bothering with answering questions. Why were they even attending classes? He did not see the point anymore.

Minjae only realised that class had moved on when he saw movement around him. Frowning slightly, the Hufflepuff moved too although he did not know why. Had the Professor announced a activity? Scratching the back of his head, he watched the others and tried to understand what they were supposed to be doing. Partnering up seemed to be the first step so....

Ugh he did not want to partner up.

But he had no choice with The Hoods lurking nearby so he stood up from his chair. "Anyone need a partner?" he asked the room at large , his voice sounded tired.

She wanted him to do what?! Pose? Seriously? He wasn't even sure he had any kind of gusto, moxie, zeal. Whatever. Usually striking a pose required some kind of spirit behind it. You needed to feel. There had to be emotion behind what pose you were going to express yourself with.

He ran through the incantation in his head once more trying his best to get it down while debating whether or not he should do this posing business.

....

....

Yeah he definitely needed more time. "Fine. I'll strike a pose if that means you'll go first." It was fair deal enough for William. He just needed to find the right motivation. Let's see? Immanent death if they disobeyed? Yeah...no motivation. Just do something. He placed is one hand on his hip with his elbow stick out. Spread his legs apart just a bit and outstretched his other arm pointing up and out with his wand sticking out from it. He tilted his head back a bit as though to inspect his outstretched arm. "There. Go ahead and freeze me." He looked like a Hero which was not something he would ever be, but it should suffice for a pose.
