The legendary portable swamp created by Fred and George Weasley was once large enough to consume the entire fifth-floor corridor. Needless to say, this greatly irritated the notorious Dolores Umbridge when there were no instructions on how to remove it and the then teachers didn't seem to mind that it was there. Today a small section of the swamp remains, roped off in tribute of the redheaded twins' historic act of protest.
When you are getting close to this reserved section of the corridor, you will know without question. The remaining swamp still smells like an authentic swamp, look like an authentic swamp, bubbles like an authentic swamp, and will indeed suck you in if you cross over the rope and step in it. Avoid the Weasley swamp with care is the best advice you should heed while on the fifth floor, especially if you're running late to class. While it must have been an impressive and humorous sight back in the mid-90's, just praise Merlin that you don't have to make your way across today.
He hadn't intended to go looking for the infamous swamp, but having it brought up in class a few days prior peaked the curious little Slytherin's brain. A swamp? Where there could be alligators (not that there actually would be but!! Their habitat was just as cool!!!!) and insects and... other fascinating things.
It took a bit of aimless wandering but finally FINALLY, he found it. And it..... was far less impressive than he thought it would be. Just a little roped of section and it didn't even look like a thriving ecosystem.
SIGH.
Nevertheless, the first year brunette took a seat outside of the roped area, pulling out a book about swamps and such, getting a start on reading. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe there was more to this than he thought. This was a magical school and the Weasley's were pretty sly and smart about stuff, right? Yeah.
Was it making noise?

This was not the first time that Claudine randomly stopped by the Swamp. There was something about the bubbling that soothed her and she often found herself staring at the depths of the Swamp, lost in various thoughts. These thoughts usually included her future and her work with creatures. On today’s outing. Samm the rat had decided to accompany the Snakette. Originally, he had been perched on her shoulder but without Claudine realising it, he was sitting atop her head. A rat made the weirdest hat.
Claudine wrinkled her nose as she approached the Swamp. The foul odor always disgusted her and she was careful to stop a fair distance away. Yes, the bubbling was still visible from her position. “What do you think, Samm?”

Serena skidded to a sharp stop the minute the moist swamp air hit her nostrils. Nope, this was definitely not the way to the owlery. She wrinkled her nose, both in slight irritation, and in disgust. She was about to turn around to try to find a way back to the owlery, when she noticed a fellow Slytherin standing in front of the ropes, appearing deep in thought. Her eyes narrowed at the small bump on her head, did she know she had a rat on top of her head?
"Uh" The blonde said slowly approaching the girl "You have a rat on her head." She said simply "Thought you ought to know?..."

Naturally, Samm could not reply. Not in human language but in rat language. Or at least Claudine would like to think all that chittering that Samm was doing was rat language and that he was responding to her question. She sighed. “I really wish I could understand you. And all the other creatures too.’’ The Snakette fantasised about what it would be like to understand President the Kneazle. Maybe he would tell her how much he loved being fussed over and spoiled. Maybe-
Um?
Claudine turned slightly to see Serena, her usually quiet roommate there. “Oh?’’ Startled at the revelation, a hand cautiously went up to her head to feel the furry little body of Samm. “So I have,’’ the girl said mildly. “I hadn’t realised he was there.’’ A wave of stench hit her then and she coughed in disgust. “I never want to come across a bigger swamp in my life. Ever.”

Serena chuckled as Claudine removed her pet rat on her head. But as she did so, the smell - and taste - of the nearly a century old swamp and coughed, her eyes watering at the sensation.
"Ugh. Tell me about it." She said with a shake of her, both in disagreement, and to shake off the remaining swamp smell in the air "Its a good thing we can't smell the lake from our dorm either. I bet the black lake would smell even worse" the blonde then glanced at the offending piece of marshland before looking back at her room mate "Why are you hanging out by the swamp anyway? If you don't mind me asking?" Maybe she's lost something?

Claudine now held little Samm cupped in both hands and wondered if Serena was afraid of rats. The other girl didn’t seem mortally afraid at least, or she might have run away already. She gazed at Serene thoughtfully. “You know, I hadn’t thought of that. I suppose the professors have enchantments in place to keep out leaks as well as smells. I imagine Reccard would have to constantly check on them.’’
Claudine turned back to the swamp. “I think it has to do more with the legacy of the Weasley twins and the mayhem they caused with Umbridge.’’ Cue her nose wrinkling again. “You do know the story behind the swamp, right?’’ It now occurred to her that she didn’t even know much about Serena despite them being dormies.

"I suppose so. Imagine if we all just woke up one day to our dormitory flooded, before Professor Recard forget to set an alarm for it." She agreed with a shake of her head, visualizing the unpleasant - but amusing - sight of the Slytherin common room being flooded by the lake.
There was a story about the swamp?! How come no one has ever mentioned that?! "Its not just some random indoor swamp?" The blonde asked incredulously "I've been here for nearly a year now, and I just seriously thought that it one of Hogwarts' many quirks." She admitted with a laugh "Is it a good story though? Like one of epic proportions?"

Claudine hadn’t really taken the time prior to appreciate some of the professors’ and their duties out of the classroom but now that she did, she thought about Reccard with just a tad more hint of warmth. Not that she had anything against her Head of House; it was just she didn’t warm up to anyone too quickly.
Okay, it was more than clear that Serena needed to be enlightened. Replacing Samm on her left shoulder, Claudine nodded. “I suppose now it’s a part of Hogwarts’ quirks…and I suppose you’ve heard of the Weasley twins Fred and George?’’ It was no use giving a brief description of the Swamp’s history without Serena knowing who the twins had been.

Serena nodded "Heroes of the last Wizarding War, owners of Weasley Wizard Wheezes. Yup." She recited in affirmation. Ok, maybe she knew about them more because of the joke shop, but History of Magic had taught her enough. "What do the Weasley twins have to do with the swamp though? Wasn't this way after their time in Hogwarts?" The swamp couldn't be that old?! Right?
But then again, judging from the stench coming from the water - something could have very well died here a hundred or so years ago and she wouldn't have been surprised.

Great. Serena did know a bit about the twins. This made things sufficiently easier and there would be less talking on Claudine’s part. She bobbed her head briefly. “It was, in a way. During their final year, Dolores Umbridge was taking over Hogwarts slowly, and everyone hated her. Anyway, the Swamp is one of the twins’ creations and they simply set it up as a way to annoy and cause hardships for her.’’ At this point, Claudine laughed softly. “Umbridge didn’t know how to remove the Swamp and as a result, the caretaker was tasked with using a boat to transport the students across to classes.’’ She wrinkled her nose. “I reckon that was no fun because… ew.’’
Even Samm was sniffing the air again then chittering as though agreeing with Claudine. “Since then, this bit of the Swamp has been left as a sort of memento.’’ Cue a glance to the Swamp and then back at Serena, who had been surprisingly easy to talk to. “And that’s the brief history of the stinky Swamp.’’

As Claudine finished the Tale of the Swamp, Serena chuckled. "It is an impressive piece of magic to cast. To sustain a small ecosystem in a random corridor." She said thoughtfully, the reason for which was partly impressive, partly admirable, and partly frivolous too if she was being honest about it. "Wait." The Slytherin stopped mid-thought "Did you say 'this bit of swamp'?" She asked incredulously "You mean to tell me that this used to be bigger?!" The smell from this small patch of water was bad enough - imagine if it used to occupy the entire corridor!
"Do you think there are animals in it?" She asked, peering into the murky waters below them. "I wonder how deep it gets."

Claudine was inclined to agree. It certainly was impressive magic. The Weasley twins were geniuses and most likely she’d be stopping it at the joke shop this summer just to check out the latest products as well as the old ones. Claudine nodded. “Yes. I think it spanned most of the corridor.” Being transported to class might have been fun up to a time but that was only her thought.
The girl eyed her roommate thoughtfully. “You know, I hadn’t wondered that. I doubt it though.’’ Lightly she added, “We can always trick an annoying first year into finding out.’’ Joking. Claudine was only joking.

Serena laughed at the suggestion "That would be fun" She agreed "Although I doubt if we can lure anyone up here with a mere floating cupcake. The stench of the swamp itself would probably enough to drive them away." The possible detention for it would even be worth it.
The girl then tucked her hands into the pockets of her robes, glanced at the swamp before glancing back at her fellow Slytherin. "You know Claudine, its a shame we never talked much this year." She said honestly. "I'm sorry I was much too shy to start up a conversation with you before this - I feel like we would have been great friends" She hoped she wasn't being too presumptuous of course.

Claudine chuckled. She got the reference to the floating cupcakes. Yes, she did. After all, Harry Potter and his adventures were very well known even after many, many years. “True. In any case, if we were found out, we’d be expelled,’’ she added darkly. This particular Slytherin had not forgotten she was walking the fine line between life at Hogwarts and being thrown out from the school. Just seeing Trent each day reminded her of his words to her terms ago.
Well, it seemed that she and Serena had covered the topic of the Swamp. Claudine blinked in surprise at the dorm mate’s next words. Hadn’t Serena not figured out that Claudine wasn’t the most social of Hogwartians? Or noticed that she sometimes had no patience for humans? “That’s okay. I don’t socialise much,’’ the girl replied with a shrug. “I take longer to warm up to others but you’re um… not so bad, Serena.” So yes, there was a good possibility that they could be great friends.

At the mention of possible expulsion from school - Serena paled a little. "I was thinking more along the lines of detention - but expulsion is sounding a bit more likely." She said with a nod. Especially with Headmaster Trent at the helm.
The blonde then smiled at her fellow Slytherin "Thanks Claudine - you're pretty cool yourself. We should do this again sometime." She said with a smile. "Hang out, I mean - not contemplate smelly magical swamps." She added with a laugh. No, she had definitely had enough of smelly swamps for now - which she felt was growing even more pungent with every passing minute.
"Will you be heading back down to the dorms after this?" Maybe they could walk back together?
