Once you've tickled the pear and turned the knob, the Hogwarts kitchen will be revealed to you. Located directly beneath the Great Hall, the kitchen is a high-ceilinged room with five identical tables to the ones in the dining room above. Unlike the room situated above however, heaped around the walls are large quantities of pots and pans. On one end of the room are shelves of plates and utensils, stoves, sinks, and a large brick fireplace.
Here numerous house-elves are working on the castle's next meal when they aren't tending to their other duties as employees of the school. The team of house-elves have specific assignments to accomplish inside the kitchen, whether it is to cook, wash the plates and cutlery, keep the pantry stocked, place more wood into the fire, or set the tables before everything is summoned to its exact replicas overhead. Though the house-elves are incredibly busy, they will surely serve you a snack ... if you aren't asking Algamus. Or you can, of course, make your own food. Just don't leave a mess behind!

Since their DADA lesson this morning, Heath knew he had to do something for Claudine. It had taken him most of the day to think of something he could do to cheer her up, but he finally got the idea to try to make her a caramellate. The dark-haired Ravenclaw felt a strange sense of deja vu as he walked into the kitchen. This reminded him a lot of last term when he made soup for her, except there were two key differences this time. This time he thought ahead and wrote the recipe down - he even found one for caramel sauce too, just in case the house elves didn’t have any on hand, and even if he hadn’t, he would be in a better position to recall it without the memory issues from last term.
His eyes momentarily flicked toward the door as he set to work gathering the necessary ingredients and turning on the stove He wasn’t sure if Claudine would meet him here or not, and part of him couldn’t blame her if she didn’t. A fresh pang of guilt gripped him at the memory of his failed attempt to protect her. The guilt soon gave way to anger, but more than anything else, he felt betrayed… and like his namesake, this Heathcliff did not handle betrayal well!
He distracted himself with the mixture of caramel, milk, sugar, and coffee in the saucepan in front of him, watching it swirl around like the storm of his emotions as he stirred.

It had been a terrible start to her fourth year, with DADA. It was official: Claudine loathed Trent and his lessons were by far her worst. Even Muggle Studies was better for her, and that had started off as the worst one given her limited knowledge on Muggles. The rest of the day had improved slightly with the other lessons; the other professors were more tolerable. Still, she felt terrible because Heath’s wand was in her possession the entire time. Poor Heath. Stupid Trent with his stupid lesson activity.
Claudine, still somewhat down, had still agreed to meet Heath in the kitchen after classes. She had no idea what he was planning but the place seemed to be ‘their’ space. The girl didn't mind this one bit; the kitchen was always a good place to relax. Maybe she would ask the elves for some cookies… rainbow cookies if they had any.
Stepping into the kitchen, she immediately spotted Heath. To her, he seemed lost in thought. Claudine hesitated a moment, hovering slightly away from where he stood. Should she disturb him? I should, she decided almost immediately, especially if he might burn whatever it is he was making. “Hi, Heath,’’ the girl said softly, not wanting to startle him. “I’ve got your wand with me if you need it to help you cook.”

I should, she decided almost immediately, especially if he might burn whatever it is he was making. “Hi, Heath,’’ the girl said softly, not wanting to startle him. “I’ve got your wand with me if you need it to help you cook.”
Heath was so lost in thought that he didn’t notice Claudine come in until he heard that familiar voice. Still stirring the pan of caramellate, he turned his head to look at her. “Hi,” he whispered, smiling slightly, though his eyes reflected every bit of guilt and anger he felt. ”I wasn’t sure you would come…” For what was probably the thousandth time today, his thoughts wandered to that travesty of a DADA lesson and all the trouble he caused her in it, but her next words jerked him back to the present before he could fall too far down the rabbit hole of self-loathing.
He shook his head emphatically, spilling his dark hair into his face. “And you’ll keep it until the week is out,” he said firmly. She already had a detention because of him; he would not be the reason she lost her wand too! He trusted her with his own wand a lot more than he’d trust Trent with hers if he found out she’d given it back. In fact, she was the only person here, other than his sister, who he would trust with his wand! Was it weird to tell her that? It seemed weird, but who knows? It might cheer her up. “I trust you with it.”
The caramel-y smell wafting through the air reminded Heath of the mixture simmering in the pan, and he turned his attention back to the stove. How long was that supposed to stay on? He glanced at the recipe he’d written down. It said three minutes, but the problem was he’d lost track of how much time had passed since it started simmering. Only one way to tell if it was done! He grabbed a clean spoon to taste test it. Oh yeah, that was definitely done! Any longer, and it might’ve burnt.
After turning off the stove, he started to reach for his wand to summon a couple of mugs and… Right, he didn’t have his wand anymore. Never mind, he’d just get the mugs out of the cabinet himself. He soon found two tall glass mugs and filled them with hot caramellate. “Here, I thought you could use this,” he said, setting one of the mugs on the table in front of Claudine. After a day like this, he imagined everyone could use some cheering up… well, except the headmaster and his new star pupil Upchuck Upstead. Those two took too much pleasure in their own ruthlessness to need cheering up from him! “It’s not as good as Expresso Patronum, but it’s something…”

Claudine gave Heath a withering look. “Why wouldn’t I?’’ Didn’t he know her by now? Didn’t he know that he was one of the rare few persons that she’d make an effort for? Unless the Ravenclaw was referring to her being tired and off because of how her day went down, then she’d understand. Still… she was here, making the effort for him. In relation to his wand, had Claudine expected him to want to take it back? The answer was no. But she had hoped that he’d want to use it for a bit. “If you’re sure,’’ the girl replied with uncertainty but almost immediately, was cheered slightly by his other words. “In that case, I’ll be sure to take very good care of it.’’ Indeed she had been and would continue to do so.
Wand situation sorted out, Claudine, for the first time, actually paid full attention to what was occupying Heath’s attention. Other than herself, of course. “Is that…? Is that caramelatte?’’ came her unbelieving question. Her dark eyes followed Heath to the cupboard as all the emotions roared inside of her. He cared about her so much that sometimes Claudine hardly dared to believe it. In that moment, she felt an unexplainable rush of feelings for him, the notable being affection.
“Thank you, Heath. This means a lot to me.’’ The latter was mumbled because she was not used to admitting her feelings. “I’m sure it’s just as great.’’ Claudine held her mug and led the way to a corner in the kitchen where they could sit. “It’s been a tough day,’’ the girl admitted softly. Trent and his lesson especially had messed with her head but now, as she looked over at Heath, she could feel the wariness, the frustration and the other negative emotions fade. “But this makes everything better." Smiling at him, the cup was raised and she carefully took her first sip. The caramelatte was rich and chocolately. “This is great,’’ came her enthusiastic review.

Heath was already beating himself up for getting Claudine sent to detention, but that withering look sent his emotions into overdrive. He didn’t even bother trying to hide the remorse written all over his face as he looked at her. “Because I got you into trouble,” he said. It was all he could do not to launch into a longwinded apology right then, but he willed himself to wait and gauge just how angry she was first. He knew she wasn’t afraid of detention, but the fact remained that she wouldn’t have one if it hadn’t been for his misguided attempt at chivalry. He wouldn’t blame her if she wanted nothing to do with him after that… yet she was still here with him.
He couldn’t help but notice the uncertainty in her next words. “Positive,” he replied, a look of determination in his eyes, but his expression darkened as his thoughts turned to the headmaster and his erratic behavior in class. “Honestly, the way Headmaster Trent is acting, I wouldn’t be surprised if he snapped both our wands in half if I took mine back…” he mumbled. And he could not allow that to happen, for his own protection as much as Claudine’s! Before he could dwell on the headmaster’s sudden face-heel turn for long, Claudine’s words had him smiling slightly. “I know you will…”
Heath was so busy looking through the cabinet that he barely heard Claudine’s question over the clatter of dishes. “It is,” he confirmed, only looking back at her once he found what he was looking for, “and don’t worry, I didn’t try to do it from memory this time!” He laughed a little, his thoughts turning to the soup he made for her last term. “I looked up a recipe before I got here…”
All Heath could do was stare, at a loss for words, as he caught the words she mumbled. This meant a lot to her… Could that mean he meant a lot to her too? No, he shouldn’t let himself get his hopes up too high; it was only setting himself up for disappointment! “I, uhh… You’re welcome,” he stammered as he picked up his own mug and followed her to the seating area. He set it down with a soft clunk. “That’s an understatement,” he muttered, willing himself not to get caught up in his own feelings of confusion and betrayal at Trent. This was not about him. He was supposed to be the one comforting her, not the other way around!
Blink, blink. Wait… she said this made everything better? He returned her smile, though his eyes reflected some unreadable emotion. Oh, Claudine, now you have some idea how you made thing better for me last term, he thought.

If it were anyone else, Claudine would have lost her patience and snapped at them. But Heath wasn’t just ‘anyone else’. He was sensitive but most of all, he always cared for her. “You didn’t get me into trouble,’’ she tried to reason with him and trying her best to choose her words carefully so as to not hurt him. “Heath… you’re not responsible for me. I make my own decisions. Honestly, I don’t mind being in detention so please don’t blame yourself.’’ Even if detention meant more time in Trent’s presence. So, Claudine was very understanding when Heath mentioned the Headmaster possibly snapping his wand. “Yes, he’s gotten crabbier.” And while that bothered her, she didn’t care to really talk of the man right now.
Okay, was she done being awkward?
Maybe.
Claudine settled back into her seat, feeling her mood improving a considerable deal. The latte was so good that it took every ounce of her strength to not down it all in one go. For now, she delved into sips. “I hope your day was at least slightly better than mine.’’ The Slytherin tilted her head questioningly at the boy.

Heath blinked, unsure what to make of Claudine’s words. Did he somehow imply that he didn’t think she could make her own decisions? He had no idea how, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d just said something very wrong. Now he was sort of glad he didn’t launch into an apology! He wasn’t exactly hurt by her words, just taken aback, and more than anything, he was conflicted.
Deep down, part of him knew Claudine was right, but there was no way he could not blame himself for what happened. The fact remained that she wouldn’t have been in a situation to make that decision if it hadn’t been for his misguided attempt to protect her. He knew she didn’t need his protection, but he couldn’t have sat by and done nothing after Trent was so awful to her. Doing so would go against everything he knew, just as being okay with causing her misfortune (no matter how minor) did. But he didn’t want to argue about it, especially since she seemed to have already moved on. “I know,” he replied, nodding slightly.
Heath absentmindedly stirred his caramellatte as he tried to think of something else to say, but he didn’t have much time to think before Claudine spoke again. He wouldn’t know if his day was better or worse than hers without more details for comparison, but he wasn’t sure whether or not he should ask about her day. He knew she wasn’t the type to pour her heart out, and if something bad besides the DADA lesson happened, she might not want to talk about it. “Thanks. It’s a lot better now,” he said with a small smile. “Sorry you had a tough day.”

Somehow, as she reflected now, Claudine doubted that her words were comforting to Heath. Humans were so difficult to interact with. She almost face-palmed herself but in typical Claudine fashion, she decided to stay silent since she was one hundred percent sure that she was going to say all the words in the wrong way. She honestly wanted to say Heath, it’s not your fault, I promise. But no, the words wouldn’t come now even though she felt that the moment hadn’t passed as yet. Even though Heath had acknowledged he was not responsible for her, she wasn't sure she had chosen her words carefully enough.
Their little conversation was enough to distract her somewhat. “Well, that’s something,’’ Claudine said, smiling and feeling legitimately happy for Heath. It seemed like both of their days had improved and that was something. She shrugged then. “Bad days happen. I just hadn’t expected it to be on the first day back.’’ The girl forced herself not to think of Trent. “Maybe the rest of the week will be better. Just not with homework…’’ There was a small chuckle at her latter remark. Claudine raised the cup to take another drink. “I might bug you to make caramelatte often for me,’’ came her warning immediately after.

It was times like this that Heath wished he was a legilimens! Until then, he thought he was good at reading people - he had to be to survive years in a muggle school full of bullies! But try as he might, he couldn’t guess what Claudine was feeling in that moment, and if he couldn’t guess her feelings, how could he make things better? He remained silent, lost in thought for several moments. “I’m still sorry you got a detention, no matter who is responsible for it,” he said when he finally found his voice. Should he leave it there or…?
If he couldn’t read her emotions, maybe cluing her in to his was the next best thing… Or maybe that could backfire completely and scare her away, he thought, but he’d never know unless he tried. With a sigh, he forced himself on, “I can’t stand seeing anything bad happen to you because…” He allowed his voice to trail off, stopping himself from saying the “L” word just in time. Telling her that again would make him seem weird and clingy; he would wait until he knew she felt the same toward him. “You know why.”
Heath looked up from his untouched drink, smiling slightly at Claudine’s words, though his expression soon changed. “I don’t think anybody expected that,” he replied, feelings of confusion and betrayal once again flaring as his thoughts turned to Headmaster Trent. Maybe he had a bad day too, and that was why he acted so… off? Never mind, it didn’t matter… there was no excuse for the way he treated everyone, so what was the point in guessing? He turned his attention back to Claudine, willing himself not to think about it. “It will be better,” he said firmly, the words meant as a promise more than a pep talk. It would be better because he’d do everything he could to make it so!
Claudine’s next words had him laughing out loud. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you only kept me around to be your personal chef!” he joked, chuckling to himself a little. He was just kidding; she knew that, right? Just in case, he added, “Jokes aside, it’s not bugging me. You can ask me anytime.”

Now that she thought of Heath’s word of him being sorry that she had gotten detention in general, she was more relaxed. At least she was happy to leave it at that; it had been no one’s fault, especially Heath’s. Even if it had been, there was no way that she’d hold it against him. A sudden dull but noticeable blus graced her cheeks at his next words. “I know,’’ was her reply, unable to meet Heath’s eyes at the same time. But there was a hint of a smile as her the ends of her lips were curled upwards slightly.
Claudine nodded. She agreed. Hardly anyone would expect their first day back to be so… stressful. She was looking forward to heading down to the barn to see the creatures there. They would no doubt boost her mood further. “It’s already starting to be, thanks to you.’’ The girl took the time immediately afterwards to take a long drink of the latte.
When the mug was lowered, she was laughing. Actually laughing. No, Heath’s talent with caramelatte was not the reason she kept him around. “You might regret those words after I take advantage of your kindness, Heath.’’ But he already knew that she’d never do that. Heath always knew her better than anyone else.

Sneaking was so easy. She was practically professional at it now, with all the sneaking she did after dinner before bedtime.
Sneak. Sneak. Sneak.
Perhaps one would find this surprising because Kizzy usually followed the rules. Well, she usually followed most rules. WELL, she usually followed the rules that felt important enough to follow, BUT that's only because some rules are arbitrary and don't make any proper sense. Those were the kinds of rules she purposefully broke. To prove points, you know? But sneaking out past curfew was a rule she didn't break very often. Not unless it involved Emmerson or Matty. She didn't mind breaking the rules for them.
There are always exceptions.
That's why she had absolutely NO worries about sneaking to the kitchens past curfew now. It helped that Emm made her feel invincible. They could do ANYTHING and come out unscathed (probably). Besides, she could never say no to a genius Emmerson idea. Those were always proper fun and if she said no, maybe Emm would find someone to replace her with. That is nightmare scenario. "You should be the one to tickle the pear," she grinned, looking over at BEST FRIEND.

Emm was used to staying out past curfew. It was usually the only time she could have alone in the music room to get A N Y dance practice in. There were kids who sucked at the piano, kids who sucked at the violin, kids who sucked at playing the guitar AND the drums. Know what they all had in common? They thought they had more right to the music room than she did. Often enough they were bigger than her, too and knew more spells.
You could say Emmerson Cambridge was forced into the role of a rule breaker, by dEfAuLt.
Now she was done dancing and positively wired which meant a top super secret trip down to the kitchen with Kizzy--another place it was better to visit after hours.
Was no one going to do anything about all these kids walking around the castle and hogging the places she liked?
"Okay!" Emm whispered loudly, giving an eager little wiggle before stepping up to the portrait and giving the pear a fine tickle. Once the entrance opened up, she tugged the bestfriend inside, not wanting them to linger out in the corridor where they could be caught. "Let's make a huuuuuuge sundae. You go grab toppings. I'll get the ice-cream."

Quirly was busy cleaning up after dinner. Right now Quirly was working on the dishes. Well, Quirly was taking extra special time extra cleaning the very bestest spatula in the entire kitchen. Clean, clean, clean. Soap bubbly clean.
After a minute Quirly realized that there was a loud whisper. "Studentsies!" the house elf exclaimed before quickly drying the spatula and hurrying over. "Baby studentses in the kitchen. Why are they here? Do they need help?"

And where there was a rule breaking Emmerson Cambridge, there was usually a somewhat hesitant (but otherwise eagerly cooperative) Kinsay James following close behind. She wasn't even scared that they'd get caught because nothing bad ever happened when they were together (read: invincible). Emm's confidence was contagious.
So she waited patiently as her best friend took a moment to tickle the pear. Luckily Phoebe had shown her the kitchens WAY early in the term. Kiz almost always didn't get enough food eaten during actual meal times, so this place had quickly become an essential stop always. When the entrance opened, Kinsay followed in behind her accomplice and grinned BIG at her proposal. "That sounds amaaaaaaaazing," she sighed with delight before nodding and immediately making her way for the cabinets.
Not knowing whether or not this particular cabinet housed ice cream toppings, Kiz flung it open anyway. Now that they were inside the kitchens it didn't matter if they made lots of noise, right? Oh! "Hi," she grinned at the little house elf, looking at it with warm eyes and a small, bashful, grin. "We're making sundaes. Do you want one?" She offered before looking over to Emm. Was that okay?

Ice-cream, ice-cream, ice-cream! Emm yanked the door to the freezer open and gazed on at the many flavours available. It wasn't exactly like a rack straight out of Florean's but there were more than three flavours to choose from and that was a good enough start.
"Let's have some of everything." She decided aloud.
In all honesty, Quirly startled her enough to make her jump. When you were sneaking around after curfew, any noise that didn't belong to your partner in crime was enough to make anyone on edge.
Thankfully, Emm did calm down and when she did she gave her most dramatic gasp. "This is [i]perfect!" Will you help us make the sundae? You can use magic to make an EXTRA big pile!!"[/b] They'd be uncomfortably stuffed after but that was half the fun.
The First Year turned back to her friend. Now that they had help, she didn't have to do as much.
"How are things moving with Matty? I want us on a huge double date this summer and it'll be better if he knows he's your bofriend now." Like Sammy knew even when he liked actin' like he didn't.
