The first thing you may notice as you enter the dueling arena for your afternoon Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson is that nothing is set up. This is a different sort of lack of set up from the kind you're used to when the class is filled with theory. In fact, only the lights closest to the Headmaster up by the stage are lit.
Speaking of, the man is currently leaned against the stage with a few papers in his hand. He scans the documents carefully, brows furrowed in concentration.
The little board usually for notes is left over in the corner. The dummies are in their right place along the walls. The windows are barely open, leaving very little natural light floating into the room.
....Come on in?
OOC: Welcome back for another DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

The Slytherin was pleased when the Ravenclaw decided to go ahead with the Patronus Charm. All she needed was to think of happy memories. There were quite a few: finding her first real friend in the form of Bernadette, her quiet times that were spent sketching, those times at the Barn among all those creatures, the moment Williamson had agreed for her to care for said creatures, and of course, last Christmas. But which memory was the strongest?
This was the question in her mind as she watched Heath give the charm a shot. Claudine also wondered which memory he used. Probably he needed to focus on it more for she saw nothing at all. Not even the slightest wisp in result. The girl shook her head. “Try focusing a little more on the memory,’’ was her suggestion as she tilted her head up at him. In the meanwhile, she’d give it a try.
“Expecto Patronum.’’ As usual, Claudine’s tone was a commanding one, the one she used with her spells. Circle-ish wand movement? Check. Silvery stuff? Not a bit off it. Maybe she needed to take her own advice and focus more on her chosen memory.

This was really useful stuff, Violet had heard of this charm but had not yet been taught to do it, and she figured she could use all the help she could get.
Apparently the wand movement involved making circles with your wand and eventually pointing it outward, but the real key seemed to be focusing on a really happy memory. And that was the difficult part, too--picking which memory and making sure to focus on it. Violet watched carefully--wow, Claudine had managed a silvery mist from the end of her wand, that was really good!
If Heath had known what Claudine was thinking, he would’ve assured her that he did know she didn’t need his protection, but he was doing this for his own benefit as much as hers. Seeing her hurt hurt him too, more than anything Headmaster Trent could possibly do to them! If that happened, he knew there was no way he’d be able to hide his emotions, and he didn’t trust that the headmaster wouldn’t use that against them both if he saw it.
Since he had no idea what was going through her mind, he remained focused on the patronus charm. He was mildly discouraged to learn that his first attempt didn’t do anything, but he supposed that was to be expected. It was a notoriously difficult spell, and he was only a fourth year. He noticed Claudine looking at him and, inwardly cursing his height, tilted his head down so she wouldn’t have to look up so far. “Good thinking,” he replied, smiling slightly. Come to think of it, he had been a bit distracted last time trying to keep quiet so as not to rouse the headmaster’s wrath.
As Heath watched Claudine attempt the spell, he couldn't help but wonder what memory she used. Was it the same one he did? He was dying to know, but now wasn’t the time to ask. Instead, he focused on his own spellwork. Pretend Trent’s not here, Heath thought. He was never going to get this spell right with his focus divided! Blocking out everything else around him, he let his mind wander back to that night just over a year ago. Holding on to the memory in his mind, he cast, “Expecto Patronum!”
That time, a silver wisp escaped from the tip of his wand. It was tiny, but definitely there! Heath looked at Claudine, curious what her reaction would be. Then out of the corner of his eye, he noticed another girl (Violet). Oh, no, they weren’t bothering her, were they? If they were loud enough to disturb her, they were probably disturbing the headmaster too! “Hi. Violet, right?” he greeted quietly. “Were we disturbing you?”

Whatever Heath may be thinking of his height, that said height never once bothered Claudine. It still marvelled her that someone could be that tall but she was used to it. Never once was she bothered by having to lean or tilt her head back to meet his eyes. As for the memory, she had chosen the one with Williamson giving her permission to work under his guidance by caring for the creatures. That was one of her strongest and happiest memories.
Her face lit up seconds later. Heath had made something happen! “Did you see that? At least that’s something.’’ A lot more than she could say for herself. “Let’s practice together. I think if nothing happens with the memory I’m using, I’ll use another.” She smiled mysteriously and was about to say more when Violet joined them. “Hi, Violet,’’ Claudine greeted the younger Slytherin. “Need any help?’’ As much as Claudine disliked being disturbed, she wasn’t that rude to shoo Violet, or anyone else, away.

Ummm.
Cecelia wasn't sure what to make of this whole being left to her own devices thing. The headmaster knew this could be dangerous, right? Like...a room full of students, many of them lions like her, practicing spells on their own. ON THEIR OWN! Clearly NOTHING could go wrong here.
....
She'd gotten better at the whole spell casting thing, at least she thought she had, but she still stuck to the ones she had perfect just in case any first years stumbled into her path while she was practicing. Safety first wasn't exactly her motto but she didn't want to go making THIS weird version of her former favorite professor and headmaster upset.
“Hi. Violet, right?” he greeted quietly. “Were we disturbing you?”

Is this a trick question? Well, the Headmaster did say it wasn't a trick question...But really?? It kind of feels like a trick question! The place is called The Forbidden Forest! Who goes into a place that had the word 'Forbidden' in its very name??
'Gryffindors...probably'
Serena blinked owlishly as the Headmaster waited for students to respond to his question. Seriously though...was he expecting anyone to answer? She had personally had never set foot on the forbidden forest, or even on any of the areas around it, so she wouldn't be a great source of information anyway.
And she had the feeling that the Headmaster wasn't really looking for any jokes or sarcastic answers right now.
He looked like he was going a little crazy to be perfectly honest.
“Alright, alright, enough of that.” He said, gesturing with his hands for them to be done with whatever nonsense they’d gotten on to. “Eyes here, this is important. Violet stopped her conversation with Heath and Claudine immediately when she heard Headmaster Trent's voice calling them to attention and turned to listen to him with what she hoped was a respectful and attentive manner. But as she heard his words, her eyes gradually widened and her mouth fell open. The Forbidden Forest! Galloping Gargoyles, what would a bunch of kids know about that that the Headmaster didn't already know himself. Unless...maybe he was trying to trick them into revealing any wrongdoing. Either way, it didn't matter--Violet was only partway through her second year at Hogwarts.
"Uh, sir... she added meekly, slowly raising her hand. "I've never been into the Forbidden Forest. I mean, it's....forbidden to students, isn't it?" Not that that would have stopped her if she had really wanted or needed to go there, but so far, Hogwarts itself had been enough to cope with.
It was moments like these that Catherine was reminded with no shadow of doubt that the Headmaster had been a Gryffindor when he attended Hogwarts as a student.
She was very much suspicious of his motives for questioning them about the Forbidden Forest right now. He could either be trying to create some sort of bait to catch the simpletons who admitted having been there or he had other intentions. Catherine did not like the idea of the latter.
That was not why she remained quiet, however. It was her custom, and although Catherine didn't care for tradition for the sake of tradition, she kept this one and did not reply.
Also because she herself had never been there before. It was forbidden for a reason.

Cecelia jumped a bit when the Headmaster suddenly called out, wondering if he was annoyed by their defense attempts or something else, something having to do with whatever his mind seemed to be on. Either way, the man had startled her. MERLIN!
Also, was this some sort of trick? Headmaster Cranky-Pants Trent wasn't exactly the person she'd want to be confessing to, especially about going into a place with forbidden IN ITS NAME, but you know... "Mostly I've skirted the edge of it..Just looking for creatures and stuff. With my eyes only. Didn't step a toe over the edge or anything, swear it." She crossed her heart and everything.

Maybe Ivy should be used to the strange behavior of the Headmaster this term, but it continued to baffle her. It was just...really weird, y'know? But there were lots of weird things about Hogwarts. Maybe she'd get used to it by the time she was a seventh year.
She'd flipped through her textbook for a spell to practice when he'd told them to do anything. By the time she'd decided on one though, the sudden outburst from him jolted her out of that task, and...he was asking if any of them had been in the Forbidden Forest???
He said it wasn't a trick question, but surely it was, right? Not that Ivy could be tricked - she hadn't ever gone to the forest. Hadn't really wanted to so far, quite frankly. She didn't have much of a desire to risk life and limb just to go in there when there were plenty of things to do everywhere else.
And it seemed so far no one else had gone either. Or at least were smart enough not to get caught by straight up telling on themselves. And someone was asking to get the Healer?
"Yeah, you always tell us never ever to go in there," she added after Violet's answer, raising her hand, "or we'll get eaten by acromantulas or something."

Coby was enjoying this lesson. 'Lesson'. He'd found his little corner and had been happily practicing his wand movements when the Headmaster yelled, which wasn't all that surprising anymore, and then he decided he actually wanted to teach them something. This made Coby sigh. Usually he loved learning, but Coby already had lots of homework lined up for the rest of the week. Plus, the Headmaster was a little off, more so than usual. A lot off even.
Like right now. This was way off. The forest??
Jacob Ezra Rider-Mae had never once ventured to the Forbidden Forest alone, and the fourteen year old even felt a little indignant that the Headmaster would think otherwise. It had 'forbidden' right there in the name! Coby remained in his corner, and began shaking his head. Absolutely not. Never. Not once. But while they're on the topic, he had excellent presence of mind. This was one of the reasons why he wouldn't go to the Forbidden Forest, there were way too many things there that might be interesting and it's better to just stay away from scary but interesting things. He didn't want to spend the rest of the term in the hospital wing and both Mum AND Benzi said going to the forest would end with him in the hospital wing. Or St. Mungo's. He had too much homework for Mungo's.

Valencia kept focused on the book in her hand as she finished up the last of the Latin verb conjugation variations on the spell she was reading about.
She looked up at the Headmaster, confused by the question and how... frantic? he looked.
She shook her head, still on her spot on the ground against the wall. She hadn't been into the Forest except when escorted on special lessons.

Oh look.
Was he finally ready to actually carry out a lesson? Claudien shifted her gaze from Violet and Heath to Trent. His question had Claudine blinking. The Forbidden Forest? The Forest where they were forbidden to visit? Of all the places he was asking about, it had to be the Forest? Claudien was suspicious. Why the sudden interest in it? Why did Trent want to know if anyone saw anything unusual?
As a matter of fact, the Snakette had not entered the Forest since her second year. Aside from the facts that she had nearly been killed by Acromantulas {after which she developed a fear for those particular creatures} and lost her friendship with Bernadette because of the entire episode, Claudine very much wanted to complete her education at Hogwarts. Any repeat of her second year Forest venture {or anything in the same magnitude} would surely get her expelled as Trent had warned her.
Surely he would remember that? For this reason, Claudine said nothing at all.

Seeing Claudine’s face light up made Heath’s heart flutter. Did she have any idea how adorable that was? He almost told her, but he remembered they were in class with the headmaster and lots of other people around. “Good idea,” he said, running a hand through his hair as he smiled at her. He was going to ask Violet if she wanted to try practicing the patronus charm with them too instead of just watching, but before he could speak, Headmaster Trent’s voice startled him.
What did he mean, “That’s it!”? Did someone set him off by being too loud? Probably not, given the fact that he wasn’t verbally assaulting anyone at the moment. Heath’s confusion only grew when he heard the headmaster’s question. Did he forget that he told them at the start of every term not to go into the forest? Hmm… maybe this was an introduction to a lesson about a dark creature that lived in the forest? Heath hoped it was that, and they weren’t actually going into the Forbidden Forest! It was still a weird question, whatever the reason for it!
Heath had nothing to add on this subject. He was no Gryffindor, as his family never tired of reminding him. He wasn’t one to place himself in unnecessary danger, so it was safe to say he’d never been in the Forbidden Forest. Pointing that out to the class seemed like a waste of everyone’s time, so he remained silent. Sorry, Headmaster! No defiance intended.

Kizzy was reluctant to agree. VERY reluctant. But Phoebe made good points, so she nodded with a little sigh. "Okay," FINE. Fineeeee. She could be incessantly polite. She still didn't like Bernie though. Those were facts.
Just as she started practicing her high kicks, Headmaster Horrible Trent started yelling. Kinsay hated yelling, so he got an upset look thrown his way. Kiz also wasn't super keen on going back to learning because they had made PLANS to destroy bubbles. It was all very exciting up until the moment when they got stopped to..... answer questions about the forbidden forest?
She hadn't ever been inside, but she had taken peeks from the OUTSIDE, so when Cece answered the same, Kinsay's hand shot up in the air. "Me too!" She chimed in very helpfully and also crossed her heart. But last time she had gone to peek, Zayn had interrupted and an entire conversation took place. This is an important detail because conversations typically lead to questions. Questions that Zayn couldn't answer because he was all around a little useless. So of course, Kinsay took this moment to shoot her hand up in the air AGAIN. "How come they built a school next to a dangerous forbidden forest?" Counterintuitive. This was the question that Zayn couldn't answer.
She lowered her hand once she asked, before it shot up one more time. "Has anyone died inside?" This was another question she had that Zayn couldn't answer. Might as well ask all the questions now because lessons were for learning. These were the things Kiz was most interested to learn about.

Avalon was in the middle of building up a fairly impressive protective shield when the Headmaster finally decided to call the class back together. But his next question only perplexed the Prefect even more. Trent, who would normally give out detention at anyone who even looked at the Forbidden Forest, let alone go into it. Who in their right mind would even admit to venturing inside?
She had never been into the forest, nor had she even been properly tempted. There were too many horror stories of terrible creatures, not to mention the amount of house points she would lose if she got caught. The Ravenclaw furrowed her eyebrow as she responded, her voice laced with confusion. "I've never been into the Forbidden Forest. I was under the impression that it was forbidden," she said. Hence the name. She was tempted to add, "You might want to ask a Gryffindor," but she restrained herself.

"The forest protects us," Phoebe reminded her little sister as she swatted away the last of the bubbles. They'd barely had a chance to really practice something before being interrupted, and it seemed unlikely the Headman was really prepared to teach them today.
So everyone should just pretend that this was a real lesson that he had prepared and everything? Answer questions that would lead to some silly little fake activity? Bah. Either way, she was proving as useless as the others. This was fast becoming a trend among the children in general. It was a wonder anyone got anything done.
SPOILER!!: Summers

Also, was this some sort of trick? Headmaster Cranky-Pants Trent wasn't exactly the person she'd want to be confessing to, especially about going into a place with forbidden IN ITS NAME, but you know... "Mostly I've skirted the edge of it..Just looking for creatures and stuff. With my eyes only. Didn't step a toe over the edge or anything, swear it." She crossed her heart and everything.
"Boring and useless." Was there a worse combination in the moment?
Probably not.
The Headmaster didn't care what happened along the edge of the forest. It was what lay hidden on the inside that interested him. Summers hadn't been in there. Her use likely went no further than bait as well.

"Yeah, you always tell us never ever to go in there," she added after Violet's answer, raising her hand, "or we'll get eaten by acromantulas or something."

facepalm.
"Right, of course. How silly of me." The man replied dryly, now thinking he may not get anywhere with them at all. Wasn't there a single useful student in this bunch?
The goal was so close.

The shake of the boy's head caught the Headmaster's attention. It took everything in him not to roll his eyes.
"I suppose you're also going to tell me you eat all your greens at dinner and look both ways before stepping out into the corridor."
The pansy children were proving exceptionally useless today.

Right. Of course. More silence.
More children who were giving him no choice but to force them into good use by some other means. You'd think they understood well enough when he said it wasn't a trick question. The man needed answers, not a stone wall of silence.

Live bait.
The Headmaster's mind was made up. These students would be live bait. One after the other, they'd proven that they served no other purpose and the man didn't have time to waste.
The answer was right in front of him. The opportunity had been perfect before they walked in. He would not be derailed.

"How come you ask so many questions no matter how many times I repeat the word "incessant" to you?"
Hint. HINT. H I N T.
She was as useless as her classmates. There was no need to add insult to injury by having her throw questions at him. As the Gryffindor could see, he was very busy at the moment.

What was Trent getting at here?
"Useless." The answer came the second the girl got through with her declaration.
He was getting tired of using the word but there wasn't a useful one in the bunch. They'd barely done any job of keeping themselves busy while he read and now they'd never been in the forest. Not even the Gryffindors.
It was a disgrace.

Give him something to work with. Going in blind was a bad idea. Of course, he had a bunch of disposable nuisances at hand but even then he'd have to be careful so as not to blow through them all too quickly.
Had to be careful with his soon to be bait.

The worst that could happen if they ran into the Forbidden Forest later today? It did not take Mamie long to come up with that, she'd been imagining the horrors of the forest since she first heard what it was called. After all, surely there was a reason it was forbidden.
She raised her hand. "The worst that could happen, is-is-is we could get eaten by bears...or trolls, and our bones trampled by centaurs, and nobody would ever know what happened to us," she said. He did say the worst. And imagine. Nobody said their imaginations had to be rooted in reality. Obviously this first year had a very active imagination. Mamie was wondering why they were talking about this...would they go over strategies to protect themselves in these worst case scenarios? She sure hoped so.
"The worst that could happen is someone evil is hiding there and kills us. In my opinion." Ashley was getting bad vibes right now. Was there something going on? Or was the headmaster going to feed them to dark creatures or wizards? Probably the first one, right? Or could it be both? Was this even the real headmaster? Like that one time a long time ago when a death eater kidnapped and impersonated a real professor? Because you couldn't be hired if they thought you would sacrifice students to dark magic.
"Go on then." The man replied dismissively. If she was feeling unwell, there was a good chance she'd be left behind. Left behind, there were a host of things that could go wrong and he wasn't interested in fixing them after. "Collect your things, be quick about it."
"Well? Are you going to answer or are you going to stand there staring like a sack of potatoes?" He asked the silent starer.
He did say it wasn't a trick question and he meant it. There were far more important things to worry about than children who had a death wish and couldn't follow simple instructions.
Much more important things.
"I suppose that makes you useless now doesn't it?" Came the Headmaster's near sarcastic response. A goodie two shoe. Perhaps she could redeem herself as bait later on. He would give it further thought but for now...this was not in the least bit helpful.
Yet another that proved to be unnecessarily useless with her silence. It could've gone one of two ways. Mordaunt had either gone in and wouldn't confess or hadn't and felt no need to point it out.

Potatoes?? Did he just call her a sack of potatoes?! Her parents will hear about this! Their headmaster was obviously crazy and did not at all care for his students safety! Honestly!
And he was rude too! She was certainly prettier than a sack of potatoes!
Serena crossed her arms and glared at the headmaster. Let him give her detention or whatever. He was rude to her in the first place any way! "I heard there were monsters in there. A lot of really undesirable creatures that you wouldn't want to meet anyhow. Like uncivilized giants, and acromantulas and centaurs that don't care much if you get lost in the woods" She replied stiffy, crossing her arms even tighter.
Why was this even a topic? Someone please, any actual grown up please rescue them from this class.
A small frown formed between Violet's brows at the Headmaster's sarcasm--he needn't be so contemptuous of her, and even if she had ever gone into the Forbidden Forest, she certainly wouldn't volunteer that information to a teacher, especially the Headmaster. Besides, not everyone had nothing better to do in their lives than go racketing around in a dangerous forest in their free time--some people had other complications in their lives.

Violet almost didn't answer this time, but she just couldn't help herself and her hand was up before she knew it. "Well, it's known there is a herd of Centaurs in there somewhere who regard their part of the Forest as out-of-bounds to humans. And I've heard...I've heard there are werewolves, and giant spiders in there." And some really rare potions ingredients, Violet bet--hmm, maybe she should explore that place one of these days.
The Headmaster seemed awfully curious about the Forest for someone who was in charge of the school and, in her opinion, should be well aware of everything that lived and hid in that part of the grounds.
Catherine's stare didn't leave the man as she studied him, a slight frown in place as she considered a few things. None of which were good.
And the worst thing that could happen? The person who was stupid enough to go there on their own could easily get lost and torn apart by a wild beast, which was one of the worst kinds os deaths. Slow and horrible. No, thank you.
Her look now conveyed the skepticism she was feeling, because something was definitely up and she did not like it one bit. That and the thought that the so-called Headmaster of the school didn't know how to safely go in and out of the Forbidden Forest didn't sit well with her. At all.
