The first thing you may notice as you enter the dueling arena for your afternoon Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson is that nothing is set up. This is a different sort of lack of set up from the kind you're used to when the class is filled with theory. In fact, only the lights closest to the Headmaster up by the stage are lit.
Speaking of, the man is currently leaned against the stage with a few papers in his hand. He scans the documents carefully, brows furrowed in concentration.
The little board usually for notes is left over in the corner. The dummies are in their right place along the walls. The windows are barely open, leaving very little natural light floating into the room.
....Come on in?
OOC: Welcome back for another DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll
It was all Heath could do not to roll his eyes at the headmaster's harsh words, especially when he compared that Gryffindor girl (Serena) to a sack of potatoes. Better to be a sack of potatoes than a Venomous Trentacula, he thought bitterly. For someone who disliked unnecessary chatter, Headmaster Trent was certainly prone to it! Did he honestly think they could forget that he thought of them as a disappointment when he reminded them practically every lesson?
Blink, blink. Heath did not like the direction this conversation was going! What kind of weird question was that?! Trent was the headmaster of this school; he should know what was the worst that could happen in the Forbidden Forest! More importantly, why was he so obsessed with the forest today? The more Heath thought about it, the more panicked he became. He's going to make us go in there alone, isn't he? he thought, and now he didn't think he could trust Headmaster Trent to keep him safe.
Despite his worries, no emotion showed on Heath's face as he raised his hand. "There are acromantulas with a known taste for humans in the forest," he said, "so the worst thing I can imagine happening is being eaten by one of them." Merlin, he hoped that answer would make the headmaster come to his senses!

Just when Bernie had started getting the bubbles working, thanks to the spell in her book, Trent had to end the fun. What a bummer. He had been a real disappointment this year, did he know that? Had she told him that yet? She should probably make an appointment to speak to her Head of House soon, so she could tell him that he was being mean and grumpy and no fun and she did NOT appreciate it.
Like this Forest stuff. Was this a test? A joke to him? Bernie knew full well that he remembered their trip to the forest, and that she and Claudine had been inside. Heck, he'd had to save them and Fuller and Fuller's dogs (well, most of the dogs, anyway) way back when they were second year babies. Bernie glanced to Claudine to see if she was going to REMIND old man geezer brain Trent about this trip, but when she didn't, the Lioness clamped her mouth shut too.
She stared at him, though, as though he were WANTING them to go into the forest, and when Heath piped up, Bernie had to nod and verbally agree. "I second what Heath said. I know you know this, sir, and you're just testing us..." Though she was growing doubtful of the truth of that with every minute that passed... "But the acromantulas in there have had a taste of us, of you, and me, and Claudine, and I don't think they'd take kindly to us coming back in. They're near the edge of the forest these days, I think. ESPECIALLY at night. And they're always hungry."
She gave him a long LOOK again, and waited for him to call her an idiot or worse, as he was prone to do this year. It was fine. She could take it. She had even overheard Kizzy try to share a secret with Phoebe, without her, and she hadn't even cried. Not even a little. Bernie was tough and she didn't need ANYONE, not even the Headman.

Whereas Heath refrained from rolling his eyes, Claudine actually did roll hers. Merlin, Trent surely was getting worse in terms of his attitude, wasn’t he? She half expected to receive another essay as punishment for not answering but was surprised when she, and the others who hadn’t volunteered to answer, got assigned none. But who knew if Trent would change his mind? The lesson was still young, after all.
Them a disappointment? Claudine resisted a snort. Trent was the biggest disappointment there was in the world; the biggest disappointment for a human and headmaster. The fourth year caught a movement and before she could stop herself, looked over to see Bernie looking at her. Claudine shrugged at the girl without knowing exactly why she did so. But it did make her temporarily forget that she and the other girl were no longer friends.
The next question was one Claudine would also not be answering. As it was, Heath and Bernie had summed what she would have said. Instead, Claudine just clenched her jaws and stared at the wall opposite to her. She hated having to relive that experience, even if it was just by memory.

Oh. Protection. That made sense. Kiz gave her older sister an appreciative smile, which then quickly faded when Headmaster Horrible Trent addressed her. He was very mean, did he know? ”Smart people ask questions.” She answered without any hesitation. Her teachers at Stark school never said her questions were incessant. Questions were supposed to be good things. It meant she was interested in learning.
He received another frown for telling Fifi off like that. Pheebs was the best example.
”We could die,” she offered simply. Everyone else was getting at it too, but no one said the word. The word was important. Kinz had no qualms in addressing it either. She wasn’t very good at beating around the bush. But also, everyone else’s answers were making her a little uneasy, especially the one the older Slytherin (Serena) offered. It’s not proper to call the creatures monsters. They’re just misunderstood. That’s all. Especially the giants. They probably wouldn’t appreciate being called ‘uncivilized’.
Trolls and giants just wanted hugs. Kizzy had learned that in Care of Magical Creatures and Mr. Williamson would be so proud that she retained that bit of information.

Valencia looked at the Headmaster curiously. What had gotten in to him? There was a clear disregard for... normalcy, but, alas, the Ravenclaw heard a question and was going to answer it.
She raised her hand. "There are both magical and non-magical creatures in the forest. I'd say if you remained far from centaur and acromantula colonies the Forest is probably relatively harmless." Really, the Forbidden Forest couldn't be that different from other magical forests.
She glanced at the book in her hands. Learning was her idea of adventure, thank you very much. "Although..." she mused "it was a hideout during the Second Wizarding War during the Battle at Hogwarts. I doubt everything was properly cleared out afterwards. There is a possibility of tripping an old ward or curse from either side."

An example to her sister? Phoebe gave Kizzy a huge smile and wink, because she hoped she was an example to the rotten baby child. Follow us, sis, because being a James was an exercise in exhausting adults who thought they had the upperhand. Incessant? Not even started yet.
"The worst thing that could happen to us would be disappointing you, sir." Phoebe flashed a wide smile. "It's just a forest with big mean things that can eat us, or want to kill us, or want us to leave. There are unicorns. Thestrals. Buried treasure."
Why was Trent asking them so much about the Forest? And why did he seem so impatient to get answers? Shouldn't he already know what was in there?
Avalon simply shrugged at the Headmaster's terse reply to her. What, did he want them to admit to sneaking around in the Forest? Even if someone did (which, if she may point out, Avalon most definitely did not), why would they be stupid enough to admit it? They'd just be buying themselves a month's detention.
At his next question, the Ravenclaw remained quiet at first - both because she was annoyed at how this lesson was going and because she didn't really know what was in the forest. There were lots of legends and speculations about it, but not a whole lot of people had been inside. "Voldemort was in the Forbidden Forest at one point. So I suppose there could be a dark wizard hiding in there." That was definitely the worst-case scenario. Although coming face-to-face with an acromantula wasn't too high on Avalon's bucket list either.

The worst that could happen if they ran into the Forbidden Forest later today? It did not take Mamie long to come up with that, she'd been imagining the horrors of the forest since she first heard what it was called. After all, surely there was a reason it was forbidden.
She raised her hand. "The worst that could happen, is-is-is we could get eaten by bears...or trolls, and our bones trampled by centaurs, and nobody would ever know what happened to us," she said. He did say the worst. And imagine. Nobody said their imaginations had to be rooted in reality. Obviously this first year had a very active imagination. Mamie was wondering why they were talking about this...would they go over strategies to protect themselves in these worst case scenarios? She sure hoped so.[/QUOTE]

"...Right. I suppose those things could happen. Yes. Not so much bears." Those things wouldn't stand a chance in a forest full of everything else.
No one finding them was hardly a worst case scenario.

Like that one time a long time ago when a death eater kidnapped and impersonated a real professor? Because you couldn't be hired if they thought you would feed students to dark creatures.
"I....doubt there's someone in there waiting but if that's your worst case then I think you should be fine."
If she was worried about people, it was likely she wasn't worried about the big spiders. Good. He didn't need anyone running off and screaming before the distractions were needed.

And he was rude too! She was certainly prettier than a sack of potatoes!
Serena crossed her arms and glared at the headmaster. Let him give her detention or whatever. He was rude to her in the first place any way! "I heard there were monsters in there. A lot of really undesirable creatures that you wouldn't want to meet anyhow. Like uncivilized giants, and acromantulas and centaurs that don't care much if you get lost in the woods" She replied stiffy, crossing her arms even tighter.
Why was this even a topic? Someone please, any actual grown up please rescue them from this class.
"That's a lot of creatures to be looking out for at once."
He'd have to put the children in different formations to make up for that. If the Headmaster could have them lined off just right, he wouldn't have to worry too much himself during his search.

Besides, not everyone had nothing better to do in their lives than go racketing around in a dangerous forest in their free time--some people had other complications in their lives.
Violet almost didn't answer this time, but she just couldn't help herself and her hand was up before she knew it. "Well, it's known there is a herd of Centaurs in there somewhere who regard their part of the Forest as out-of-bounds to humans. And I've heard...I've heard there are werewolves, and giant spiders in there." And some really rare potions ingredients, Violet bet--hmm, maybe she should explore that place one of these days.
"I suppose we'll have to ensure we don't get to their side then, won't we?" It was on the map, surely. If not, he had quite a few students at his disposal. Wouldn't be too difficult to find what he was looking for while avoiding the problem areas.

And the worst thing that could happen? The person who was stupid enough to go there on their own could easily get lost and torn apart by a wild beast, which was one of the worst kinds os deaths. Slow and horrible. No, thank you.
Her look now conveyed the skepticism she was feeling, because something was definitely up and she did not like it one bit. That and the thought that the so-called Headmaster of the school didn't know how to safely go in and out of the Forbidden Forest didn't sit well with her. At all.
Still nothing out of this one.
Was there ever anything out of this one? The man supposed she could be a part of the silent bait. The group looking for the centaurs, perhaps. However he went about it, he was nearly confident she wouldn't scream when worst came to worst.

"While I don't want to disagree with such an accurate statement, I suppose I can think of a few--very few things--worse than you lot disappointing me when we head into the forest. O for effort."
The most disappointing of them could go first. Now there was an idea.
"Alright, I think we've gotten about all we can get. Leave your things where they are but take your wands." They would very likely need them. "This way, move quickly, I need you all out of the classroom quietly." He said, himself heading out. The Headmaster waited only long enough for them to do as they were told before leading the group of them out of the duelling arena, down the moving staircases, across the grounds and to the edge of the forest.
"We're going on a bit of a ...treasure hunt today." Someone had mentioned treasure. They hadn't been entirely wrong.
The man led them beyond the trees, explaining while he walked. He didn't stop until they'd come to a clearing of sorts.
"Buddy up, don't get eaten alone. You may be needed to put up a bigger fight before you go. Just....explore. See what you can find. Come show me whatever you find. 100 points to anyone who brings me something exceptional. Winner also gets to take 200 points from any house they choose."
See? Incentive. Many eyes were better than two. If he had them looking with him, something would surely turn up. It would surely turn up.
"Get to work, we haven't got all afternoon."
OOC: Main activity time!!! Have them looking around inside the forest, the Headmaster hasn't said what for. I'll be...ahem...hopping on a few accounts as we go through this little exploration class will end on Saturday, October 24th

Ok, so now they were in the Forbidden Forest. The forest that was forbidden. The forest where students were not allowed because it was filled with wild, and untamable creatures that could kill or harm or maim you or all of the above, if not approached carefully.
Yes, that forest. Oh goody. She didn't want to die. Not today and certainly not in this stupid forest! So she needed to be smart about this and not just head straight into the forest and risk an untimely death. Ok, think Serena, why were they here? The headmaster obviously needs to find something. But what? Maybe whatever it was left traces? Everything magical had a magical signature! Maybe she needed to trace that!
The blonde Slytherin closed her eyes, and took a deep calming breath. She set her mind onto focusing on finding whatever it was that the Headmaster was looking for. After all, she had just learned in Charms that the key to every successful charm is intent - and she fully intends to get out of here as fast as she can!
She then moved her wand around a wide arc across from her and said "Appare Vestigium" She watched as gold swirl, in an almost powdery texture emerged from her wand and scatted around the area of the forest near her.
Then she waited. If she had done it the way her mom taught her, she would soon see a golden trail of whatever it was that the Headmaster wanted to find. If it was alive at all.

Ashley needed a partner. No way was she doing this alone. Where was Ivy? She had definitely been lying. Where did she really go? She needed a partner right now, so she latched on to Serena, who looked like she knew what she was doing. "Can I be buddies with you? I don't have a partner." She looked sort of pleadingly at the older girl. She didn't know any helpful spells for this, but she supposed she could search manually. She squatted down and started to look for anything out of the ordinary. She kept her wand out, in case she needed to blast something with diffindo.
Violet had been just about to ask her new friend Serena if she wanted to partner up when Ashley, that first year with way too much confidence, jumped in ahead of her. Drat! Now Violet would have to go looking, a thing she hated given her awkward social skills. But she was not eager to enter the Forbidden Forest alone. In fact, she was not eager to enter the Forbidden Forest at all! But Trent had already led them out here and Violet had more nerve to enter the Forest than to defy the Headmaster.
So now she needed a partner, preferably a student a year or two ahead of herself. She spotted Avalon near her--the older Ravenclaw was smart and capable and seemed to know what she was doing. "Uh...Avalon? Would you...maybe like to be my partner?" Violet asked her.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Claudine already knew what was coming before it did. And at the same time, she realised something: Trent wouldn’t have taken them to the Forest, not when he had been so determined to keep his students in out of it, and especially not when he had rescued her and Bernadette two years ago and punished them for their actions. So why was this Trent so eager to take them there? The Snakette stared hard at him as though the answer would pop right out of the man’s mouth. Naturally no such thing happened.
The girl watched further as Trent and most of her classmates started leaving the room then she turned to Heath. “Are you going?’’ Claudine honestly wasn’t feeling up to it given her past experiences but her realisation about Trent made her very curious to find out why he was so eager to visit the Forest. Not only that, but she also wanted to observe him further. Her third reason was that she refused to stay behind if Heath went. Absently, Claudine glanced towards Bernadette, wondering if the Gryffindor would be going as well.

Valencia grabbed her things. If they were going into the forest she may need to look up a spell, which she figured was more important than leaving her things behind. She slung it over her shoulder and followed the Headmaster and the rest of the class into the Forest.
She looked around. Partner up? She automatically looked for Aboli because... well... Aboli was also fairly smart and was the least likely to get them into trouble or chaos.
It certainly wasn't because she was used to pairing up with her former friend. No. Who had time for people that didn't consider their friendship something trustworthy and who said horrible things about you?
She continued to look around. Maybe she could just follow behind a group? Or remain nearish to one? She looked out the ground and took a few steps toward what looked like a well worn animal path. That should be the safest thing, right? If animals used it, there wasn't any magical traps at least.

For some reason, it didn't really surprise Avalon that they were heading into the Forest. Trent had been acting bizarre all lesson, so she was expecting an equally bizarre activity. The weird thing was that the Headmaster seemed to want them to do the dirty work for him. But what were they supposed to be looking for? He didn't even give them any clues.
The Prefect was scanning the crowd gathered in the clearing for a partner when she was approached by Violet. Even though she was young, it might be good to have a Slytherin on hand. They were known for being resourceful, right? "Sure," Avalon replied. "Wands at the ready, then?" She clutched her own wand tightly in her hand, glancing at her partner to see if she was ready before heading off to the right of the clearing.
The smell of wizards was hard to miss when such a group entered the forest. So many little wizards and witches, bite sized and there for the taking.
The herd of acromantulas, led by their leader, slowly crept through the forest toward the group. They stuck to the shadows of the trees but there was no denying the soft sound of clicking as their pincers snapped together in anticipation.
Where oh where were the little human snacks? They could almost smell them though they were still not close enough to see them or be seen.
Mamie grabbed her wand as instructed, following the headmaster and the rest of the class into the forest. When told to partner up for being eaten, she looked around for an older student. She definitely didn't want to partner with another first year, because then they might not be able to protect themselves from whatever was in the forest that was not bears.
She spotted Valencia and walked over. "Would you be my buddy?" she asked, before looking nervously over her shoulder. "Did...did you hear that?" she whispered loudly, holding her wand up in front of herself like a shield and taking a step closer to the sixth year.

Phoebe was going to keep an eye on her sister AND on her Bernie, and she linked her arms through theirs to properly claim them. HELLO FRIENDS. "What exactly do you suppose exceptional means, anyway? Like exceptionally boring. Exceptionally tree-like? Exceptionally stupid pile of leaves? I don't understand what he thinks is going to..."
Phoebe paused and cocked her head, listening to the sound of her classmates breaking twigs and rustling branches. Was that just students? Just humans in nature? Or was it wild animals who wanted to eat little sisters named Kizzy?? "Exceptionally dangerous. Exceptionally terrifying." Phoebe kicked over leaves and rocks with her toes in case there really was treasure.

Uhhhhhh why didn't Bernie feel like the Headmaster was taking her very seriously? She almost added, 'And remember how you grounded me to my dorm for the rest of a term because I went into the forest?' but she DIDN'T. She didn't need to be the one to remind him that this was her first year NOT starting off in trouble.
Except for that one detention, that Fight Club one.
Her blue eyes drifted toward Claudine again, because she couldn't help but wonder if SHE was looking as alarmed as Bernie was, but then Phoebe was linking arms with her and the whole class was setting off for the Forest. Alrighty then, guess she didn't get a say in the matter. Guess she had to go FIND something.
"Bet you a sickle that it's a Hufflepuff who finds the first interesting thing," Bernie grumbled as she marched into the forest. She was only PRETENDING to not be afraid right now, mostly because Kinsay the first year was right there, and also, Bernie wasn't going to look like a wimp in front of Phoebe. "Hufflepuffs always find stuff." Even trouble sometimes.
Speaking of... what was that sound? That... that ticking... the faint hairs on the back of Bernie's neck stood up lightly, and she got her wand out and in her hand, ready just... just in case....

The ground around her glowed gold, and various trace of magic, foot prints, hoof prints and the like lit up around her. Ugh, she should have known that she wouldn't be able to get anything with it. The place was teeming with magical traces overlapping one another.
Either that, it she just didn't cast it right. Which wasn't a surprise to her either.
She lowered her wand arm, contemplating on what could her next step be, when she felt a hand literally latch onto her forearm. Jumping in surprise, the fourth year Slytherin quickly turned to her left, wand at the ready, only to find that an 11-year old had attached herself to her side, asking to be partners apparently.
She smiled at the girl kindly, lowering her wand slightly. "Sure, no problem." She was about to introduce herself when the girl squatted down on the forest floor, and started peering into the soil, as if hoping to find a coin, or maybe an earthworm. "Hey, c'mon now, no need to squat on the ground. Its dirty down there." She explained, pulling the younger Ravenclaw to her feet "Just keep your wand at the ready, alright?"

The blonde witched looked around, she had been too engrossed in her conversation with the first year that she hadn't immediately noticed that something was amiss.
Some of her other classmates had noticed too. There was something weird going on here. She could hear a soft, rhythmic clicking sounds, and from the looks on the faces of her classmates, it looks like they could here it too. She didn't know what it was, but it probably wasn't there to offer them snacks.
She draw her wand up again, then ushered her new partner (Ashley) to stand behind her "Keep your wand up, and hold on to the back of my robes. Something doesn't feel right." The girl would probably slow her down if worst comes to worst, but she was not leaving her to die in this stupid forest.
If she wanted to risk her on pointless, death defying adventures, she would have asked to be sorted into Gryffindor. It seems like the Headmaster was hell bent on killing them so early into the term.

Ashley was grateful. This older girl would probably not abandon her. "I know, but I don't know any other ways to search." She still stood up. She stopped searching. There was something wrong. She couldn't see it, but she could hear it and sense it. "The only spells I know that would be useful in a fight in a forest are the jelly-legs curse, diffindo, reparo, ascendio, aguamenti, and glacio. I know incendio too, but that would be a stupid thing to cast. Nearly burned my arm off once. Actually, those first spells might not be too bad." She just needed to get creative. She stood slightly behind Serena, able to be protected but not completely hidden away so that she could still do stuff. She took a deep breath and pulled out her wand. "Hopefully, we can settle whatever this is diplomatically though."

She lost points?
Kinsay was absolutely devastated and showed as much in her watery eyes. She wasn’t trying to be incessant, she was only being curious. It made her wonder if all of her other professors hated her questions this much too. So she bit her lip and turned away, thankful for the distraction of all Phoebe’s questions about ‘exceptional’.
Kiz stayed uncharacteristically quiet though, absently listening to Bernie and Phoebe talk. She didn’t even notice the scary sounds coming from all around them and she usually noticed almost everything!

This was officially Catherine's most hated lesson ever. As soon as they Headmaster said they were going treasure hunting, right after he asked questions about the Forbidden Forest, Catherine knew exactly what would happen.
No, students might not die, but this wouldn't end up well and no idiotic Gryffindor or optimist Hufflepuff would tell her otherwise. This was bad. A bad idea, led by a man who was out of his mind. Leading students, many of whom first years, into a dangerous place like that. And for what? It wasn't like they couldn't learn in a classroom what he wanted them to learn out there. If he wanted them to learn at all, that was. For some reason, it sounded like he was just dragging them along to fit his own ideas. He even seemed bothered to see them at the start of the lesson anyway.
Catherine hated this, she absolutely hated this.
However, she wasn't going to disappear and get in trouble for skipping class. She hated that idea too, so it was an awful conundrum she was dealing with right now. She hated both outcomes equally. On the one hand, one option didn't end up with her possible death. On the other hand, the other option would possibly teach her something she might not know yet. That was what she was hoping for, at least. At least. There had better be better outcomes for this other option, because that was what Catherine was going with.
With a frown and wand held tightly in her hand, but she was there.
Worst day of her life, if you asked her. This was a terrible, terrible idea. Where was her brother to be used as a shield?

This was-well, it was unexpected. Normally Cecelia would be excited for this kind of adventure, talk of the forbidden forest and the creatures within having happened with Coop over the summer. The headmaster wasn't the person she wanted leading the charge though, not this time. She wasn't sure she trusted him anymore. Wasn't sure she liked him. She also didn't understand why he was acting like he didn't know what was inside the forbidden forest. Was it some kind of test or? She didn't like it.
She had her wand out, looking around for someone to stick with as they searched. Spotting Catherine, the blonde hurried towards her and took her arm. "What kind of treasure do you think he expects to find out here?" If anyone had ideas on this, it was probably Cat.
Good. Violet had half expected the older Ravenclaw to reject her because she was young, but she was also hoping that the Prefect's sense of responsibility would cause her to take Violet along. Anyway, Violet had her wand out and ready; she might have only had a year and a half of school, but she was 14 whole years old, older than her class, and she had picked up a few street smarts last year in NYC. She would try to make sure Avalon wasn't sorry for bringing her along. She also hoped that would be enough.
Violet kept an eye out for where Trent was, because she was pretty sure he wasn't going to let anything bad happen to him, so it might be good to keep close.
”There.” The raspy voice of one near the front of the charge signalled that the herd had now come to the children they had been sniffing out. That the Headmaster was also present was of little consequence. On his own, against the mighty horde, there was not much he could do.
The spiders began pouring into the clearing, heedless of the wands that some of the students now clung to. Pincers snapped hungrily as they began moving toward the group.
“You’ve come a far way into our home.” Their leader said, leading the steady march ever closer.
