The first thing you may notice as you enter the dueling arena for your afternoon Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson is that nothing is set up. This is a different sort of lack of set up from the kind you're used to when the class is filled with theory. In fact, only the lights closest to the Headmaster up by the stage are lit.
Speaking of, the man is currently leaned against the stage with a few papers in his hand. He scans the documents carefully, brows furrowed in concentration.
The little board usually for notes is left over in the corner. The dummies are in their right place along the walls. The windows are barely open, leaving very little natural light floating into the room.
....Come on in?
OOC: Welcome back for another DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
DADA lessons had come to be the ones that Claudine hated and it was all because of Trent. Surely everyone realised by now that he had become meaner than usual? She didn’t care about constantly receiving detentions or essays; it was rather about Trent constantly putting her and practically every other student down. Hardly any response or idea was good enough for him.
Anyway, that was why Claudine hadn’t been too fussy in attending today’s lesson. Trent made her blood boil and messed with her headspace. She only came along after Heath’s gentle encouragement and the fact that he’d be there with her. The Ravenclaw knew all about Claudine's feelings and misgivings for the Headmaster.
Blink.
Why was it so dark?
With Heath beside her, she moved into the Arena, blinking rapidly to make her eyes adjust to the dimness. Trent’s usual behaviour did not motivate nor scare her into a greeting so she ignored the man. To Heath, she gestured towards a window. Claudine was going to go stand by that.
Ivy walked briskly into class. If she had learned anything, it was that the Headmaster did not tolerate any sort of nonsense, and that included being late. After all to be early was to be on time. As she entered the dimly lit room, she opened her eyes wider to try and see better. She had expected to be early, but just how early was she. ”Lumos,” she whispered, using her wand to light her watch. No, she was only a few minutes early... ”Nox,” she whispered again putting her wand out.
Crossing the rest of the way across the room, she moved toward the front where the stage and Headmaster were and looked around anxiously. ”Good day, Headmaster,” she said, her inflection not making it clear if it was a statement, a question, or a greeting.

Ashley walked into the dueling arena. It was dark, there were dummies, it was the DUELING ARENA, Trent was the teacher, JUST NO. She was not very into this. There were so many ways it could go wrong. She took a place along the wall, fidgeting slightly and squinting. Maybe if it was dark people wouldn't notice her.

Defense had become the absolute worst class, and Phoebe's mood soured considerably every time she entered the classroom. Every time she saw the Headmaster's big dumb face. Imagine that he had EVER been her favorite person.
And the room wasn't ready. The Headman wasn't ready. Phoebe crossed her arms and pulled up a patch of wall. She got yelled at for helping too slowly last time, but she wouldn't lift a finger to help on her own. Sit on a pinecone, Headman.
"Good day to you. Headmaster Trent." Phoebe's voice was polite but without even an ounce of warmth. Sit on three pinecones.
Avalon was trying to be positive about the upcoming DADA lessons, but judging how poorly the last ones had gone, she had very low expectations. The strange setup and lighting of the Dueling Arena only confirmed her suspicions that today might be another dreadful class. Not wanting to disturb the Headmaster - he looked to be very deep in concentration - the Ravenclaw made her way into the room quietly. Due to the darkness, she didn't notice her housemate Ashley leaning against the wall, but Claudine and Heath, illuminated by the light from the window, received a nod in greeting.

Well........ This was weird.
And not even in the usual weird way that things were weird. This was weirder than that. Kinsay had learned not to be incessant though so she wasn't planning on pointing it out. "Hi," she quietly greeted the meanterribleworst person ever Headmaster as she made her way inside the dueling arena.
Kinsay had questions, but she knew better than to raise her hand and wait to be called on because whenever she did that he liked to ignore her. So instead, she raised her hand and voiced the question even without the go-ahead. "Did you forget we have a lesson today?" She was only trying to be helpful.

Naya wasn’t sure what to expect when she arrived for Defense Against the Dark Arts class. One thing she was sure of was that she was going to be on her absolute best behavior. She was determined not to get on the Headmaster’s bad side, although everyone seemed to be on his bad side these days.
Entering the arena, she took a look around. The atmosphere did not give her a positive feeling. “Hello Headmaster”, she said, as she looked for a good place to hide stand. Taking a deep breath, she tried to get her mind prepared for whatever.

Heath trudged into the duelling arena alongside Claudine. The setting reminded him of last term’s bubak lesson… the one time he ever felt confident in a DADA lesson, the time when Headmaster Trent seemed to actually care about his students, the time when Heath respected and looked up to him… The memory brought all the feelings of betrayal back full force, but Heath was careful not to let any emotion show on his face. No matter what happened, he would not give Trent the satisfaction of seeing him vulnerable! More importantly, he knew Claudine needed him to stay strong.
As much as Heath hated what the headmaster had become this term, they had one thing in common - a dislike of unnecessary chatter. Instead of a verbal greeting, he acknowledged the man with a polite nod, realizing too late that he probably wouldn’t see it due to the darkness and his interest in… whatever those papers were. He followed Claudine to the window, squinting his eyes to make out his surroundings. Darkness, dummies… they must be covering another creature of darkness. A lethifold? Or maybe a dementor this time? Ooh, were they going to practice the patronus charm? Knowing Trent, he would go about it in the most sadistic way possible, but it was still useful knowledge.
In the darkness, Heath could just barely see someone nodding in his direction. Was that Avalon? Whoever it was, they got a polite nod in return.

Bernie was here, not talking, not chatting unnecessarily, not even greeting the Headmaster as she might've done once upon a time ago. She was just wearing a small frown and had her arms crossed as she silently came in, drifted over to a spot by the windows, and leaned against the wall.
WELL. Were they going to duel to the death today or what? She was expecting something like that.

What...were they doing here?
The Headmaster straightened where he stood, prying his eyes from his documents to watch the incoming students. What time was it? Had he forgotten they had a lesson?--Evidently, as they were now piling in and the man had no idea what for.
He could've sworn this was a free period but now, glancing down at the little schedule he pulled from his pocket, he could see how inaccurate the thought had been.
They had class. How very unfortunate. The Headmaster had things to do.

He looked Blaze over, noting she was about as enthused for this lesson as he was. Briefly, he thought to cancel the lesson. Pretend they were all mistaken but the girl had come with others and it was unlikely they'd believe they were all wrong.
No, he'd have to endure this.

"Good day." To his credit, he didn't grunt at this one when she entered. The Headmaster had since began putting a few of his papers away to avoid prying eyes. The students were staying. He would have to find something to keep them busy.

It was dark and in fact the Headmaster didn't notice when this one had entered. Granted, he also was not trying too hard to notice. His afternoon was booked. There were things he'd planned to do. Forgetting they had class, having them show up, it was all rather inconvenient.

"James." The man replied with a nod of his head. The children were sour little things, no happier to see him than he ever was to see them. Were he another sort of man, this may have affected him but he was not and this did not.

Another he didn't see enter.
Now being resigned to the fact they apparently had a lesson in this period, he really should've gone ahead to turn the lights on. They were staying, some sort of lesson would need to be thought up. There was very little he could do about it at this point.

Right, the one who came in with Blaze. He'd almost missed the boy's entrance as well--silent as he was being--but caught the moment of a dark shadow and realized there was someone else.

WELL. Were they going to duel to the death today or what? She was expecting something like that.
And another one.
Circe.
This really was going to turn into a lesson. Just his luck. In this castle, it was near impossible to get a moment for himself. The students had a habit of....showing up. Nevermind they had a lesson planned. He had T H I N G S he needed to get done.
The stroke of 12 on the clock was the final nail in the proverbial coffin. The students had shown up for...whatever reason. It was now the new hour.
With a heavy sigh, the man eased off the stage and turned to face the students. Had to put them to work if he had any hope of maintaining his original plans.
"Find something to do, don't make any noises, I'm very busy." He began, doing little to hide his disinterest. "Go play with the dummies, have a duel or whatever else you'd rather be doing." He didn't care. They could find something, surely. Anything would do. The Headmaster turned back to his papers.
"I don't want to be interrupted. I'll find something else for you lot to do in a bit. Don't stand around doing nothing."
OOC: Hey guys!! We're officially getting this class started. Your lovely Headmaster maaaaay have entirely forgotten he even HAS students. OOPS. He's asked the students to occupy themselves with the dummies but they can do just about any other DADA related thing. Of course, they could also NOT do anything but he won't like that much. We'll move on to the first question in 48-72 hrs. If you have any questions, just give me a nudge <3

Ashley was glad that nobody seemed to have noticed her. But she thought that the headmaster might get mad if she continued to do nothing. So she practiced Diffindo loudly on a small piece of her robe, making sure the headmaster would notice that she was doing something. It was one of the few offensive spells she knew, and worse come to worst, she could point her wand at someone and cast it. She thought that that might work reasonably well.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
The fourth year was quite relieved that Trent hadn’t decided that he wanted to give her harsh words for entering the room without a greeting. As a matter of fact, as she observed him, it occurred to her that he seemed sort of reluctant. Reluctant to what? To teach? To be disturbed? Whatever. That was his problem. Distracted by other movements in the dark, Claudine squinted as others joined the gathering. Was that Avalon? Claudine smiled slightly in her direction.
Eyes back on Trent, she raised her eyebrows and shot a questioning look to Heath. Did he notice the way the Headmaster seemed to be out of his usual mood for teaching? And what was this? Trent was actually telling them to occupy themselves with how they see fit? Wow. This was a first.
Whatever.
There was a Charm she always wanted to try working on and now was a better time than any other. “I think I’m going to give the Patronus Charm a shot,’’ Claudine muttered to Heath. “The first thing’s choosing a strong, happy memory, right?”

Play with the dummies? That was... dumb, for lack of a better word. The Headmaster was NOT being himself today. Bernie pushed off the wall and grumpily made her way over to Phoebe, because she wasn't going to just occupy herself and her fellow Gryffindor usually had fun ideas.
Oh and... maybe they could practice spells on her sister instead of a dummy. "Heya Pheebs," she glumly greeted her roommate. "Wanna make bubbles come out your wand? There's a spell for it in my book." She just hadn't tried it yet or whatever.

"No. I want to punch things. Can you blow bubbles and I'll kick them with my FEET? And punch them with my FISTS?" Phoebe pushed off the wall, hooking an arm around Kizzy as she joined Bernie. The Headman was being a big jerk, and she was going to write her grandmum and complain about it. And Becky's dad.

.................. "No," a dejected Kizzy went to go stand as far away from their horrible Headmaster as possible. He didn't even pretend to answer her question.
And now they weren't even going to learn things!? What was the POINT? Kiz felt extra dejected now. Though that didn't last for very long because next thing she knew, she was being hooked and pulled over to join her sister and..... Bernie.
Kizzy eyed her sister's friend just to reinforce the fact that she did NOT like her. Except it likely wasn't as effective as she wanted it to be because she hadn't entirely perfected the 'I hate you' look yet. It was a work in progress. Maybe one day.
Fighting bubbles did sound like good fun though. Her elation at the prospect of doing so was apparent in the way she perked up. Wait. Lifting a hand to hide her mouth in the way one does before sharing a secret, Kinsay turned her body toward her sister and lowered her voice, "Can we do that without Bernie?"

Judgemental looks galore from this one. How very unprofessional.
Rolling her eyes, Catherine immediately marched away from her classmates, as she had just decided that she, too, did not want to be interrupted. They had to find something to do, she had plenty of that.
Finding a spot near one of the walls and away from the dummies and other people, Catherine pulled out her Defence Against the Dark Arts textbook, opened it and started reading. She would not waste her precious time doing nothing with the others, or worse, blowing bubbles - really??? - like she had overheard someone saying. A Gryffindor, obviously.
More judgemental looks. Ugh. Kidseven though they were older than her.

Heath stood slightly in front of Claudine, prepared to protect her from whatever danger this lesson may have in store if he had to. What does our esteemed headmaster have in mind today? He thought to himself. Monster lurking in the darkness? Evil dummies to put us all in the hospital wing? The only thing that stopped his guesses was the man himself. It was all Heath could do not to gape in shock at the directions. Just when he thought Headmaster Trent couldn’t do anything to surprise him anymore, he said that.
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught Claudine’s questioning look and returned it with a shrug, but his expression soon turned concerned, He was now convinced that there was something very wrong with the headmaster! Despite the rather dramatic changes in Trent’s personality, Heath was sure he would never leave the students to their own devices in a lesson. Even if he stopped caring about the students’ education, it seemed he would enjoy being in control too much to do that. Had the storm last term permanently affected his mind? Did the chaos of Hogwarts finally drive him mad? Ugh, get it together! He inwardly berated himself. Why should you care about him? Do you think he’d do the same for you?
Heath was jerked back to reality by Claudine’s voice and turned to her, smiling slightly. Had she read his mind? He was just thinking of the patronus charm only moments ago! “Right,” he replied, keeping his voice as low as possible so as not to disturb the headmaster. It wasn’t hard to pick a happy memory! Visualizing the happiest time he’d ever known, he allowed himself to become lost in the memory of that night… the sounds of overlapping conversations and people singing Christmas songs, the smells of Christmas trees, hot chocolate, and sugar cookies…
“Expecto Patronum," he said quietly but firmly, making the circular movement with his wand. He didn’t expect his spell to work on the first try, but just in case, he aimed it toward the window where it wouldn’t bother anyone. He thought he saw a faint glimmer of light at the tip of his wand, but it was probably just wishful thinking. Just in case, he asked Claudine, “Did that do anything?”

Well, this was certainly unusual. Why didn't the Headmaster have a plan for class? And why wasn't he yelling at anyone yet? Violet had mentioned some weird personality changes a few weeks ago while they were in the trophy room, but Avalon never gave it much thought. But now, she thought the Slytherin might be on to something. Trent was definitely acting very out-of-character. Seriously, play with the dummies? That was most non-Trent thing that ever came out of his mouth. Or maybe he just had something important and headmaster-y to finish? Avalon tried to convince herself of the latter, but a part of her wasn't so sure.
The prefect wasn't in the mood for a duel today - nor did she want to receive a detention for inadvertently losing - so she opted to practice Protego Horribilis in the mean time. She'd perfected Protego, but it was always useful to have a stronger defense.
As far as she knew, she had only missed one class. Which of course was not her fault - it was that evil cranberry pie that she had too much of.
Apparently eating 4 whole pies was the recipe for a trip to the hospital wing for a couple of days
But really, was the class really THAT ahead that they could do whatever? Can they blow stuff up? Or maybe it was a Hogwarts thing? Because she couldn't recall any class going in this direction in her three meager years in Ilvermorny before transferring.
Serena looked around for a friendly face. Or any face. She wasn't picky really. Just anyone who could tell her what in blazes were they supposed to do?
Mamie was seriously confused. Sure, their headmaster/defense professor being grumpy was not unusual. But refusing to teach them? What was he being paid for if not to teach them? Mamie dragged her bag over to Ivy and kneeled down next to her.
"Anything good in that textbook?" she whispered. She wasn't sure how they were supposed to duel without making any noises, but she wanted to learn something today. And she certainly didn't want to have to read the textbook. "We could try out a new spell on the dummies!" She realized her voice had grown above a whisper and clamped her hand over her mouth with a nervous look in the headmaster's direction. She hadn't been too loud now, had she?
Sardine VIP || Shark Attack! || D A R T E R || Captain Oblivious
Well... this was... an interesting (and by that she meant random and completely unexpected) turn of events. Valencia looked around, deciding what to do. Did she want to practice spells? Not really.
She found a spot against a wall and sunk down to sit. She then took out a book she'd been reading on magical theory. She'd just read. It's what she'd be doing if this were a free period after all.
She lit her wand and held it over her book as she started reading.

Claudine saw what you were up to, Heath. Oh yes, she did. Standing a little way in front of her spoke volumes. Despite this, she chose not to say anything at the time. Surely Heath knew that she didn’t need protection from anyone or anything? Anyway…
The Slytherin was pleased when the Ravenclaw decided to go ahead with the Patronus Charm. All she needed was to think of happy memories. There were quite a few: finding her first real friend in the form of Bernadette, her quiet times that were spent sketching, those times at the Barn among all those creatures, the moment Williamson had agreed for her to care for said creatures, and of course, last Christmas. But which memory was the strongest?
This was the question in her mind as she watched Heath give the charm a shot. Claudine also wondered which memory he used. Probably he needed to focus on it more for she saw nothing at all. Not even the slightest wisp in result. The girl shook her head. “Try focusing a little more on the memory,’’ was her suggestion as she tilted her head up at him. In the meanwhile, she’d give it a try.
“Expecto Patronum.’’ As usual, Claudine’s tone was a commanding one, the one she used with her spells. Circle-ish wand movement? Check. Silvery stuff? Not a bit off it. Maybe she needed to take her own advice and focus more on her chosen memory.
Headmaster Trent's mood had apparently not improved since Charms class, and today he was so preoccupied with his own business that he didn't even seem to acknowledge them. But he'd ordered them to find something to do, so Violet had wound up moving over to watch some older students, Claudine and Heath practising the Patronus charm. This was really useful stuff, Violet had heard of this charm but had not yet been taught to do it, and she figured she could use all the help she could get.
Apparently the wand movement involved making circles with your wand and eventually pointing it outward, but the real key seemed to be focusing on a really happy memory. And that was the difficult part, too--picking which memory and making sure to focus on it. Violet watched carefully--wow, Claudine had managed a silvery mist from the end of her wand, that was really good!
