Default DADA Lesson 1 - The Elder Wand

It's bright and early on the first morning of classes. 8 a.m. to be exact. Did you take the Headmaster's words seriously about a good night's sleep? No matter, the lesson will take place regardless of your level of fatigue.

Entering the classroom, you'll find nothing out of the ordinary, which in itself may be a bit out of the ordinary for the man who typically enjoys immersive scenery in his lessons. Speaking of, The Headmaster stands by the window, looking out on the grounds. Across from him, on the blackboard, is a sign that says:

Quote:
Refrain from unnecessary and incessant chatter. This is not the Great Hall, this is a classroom. Catch up with your friends on your own time.
The desks are arranged in rows and most of the curtains are drawn. In fact, the majority of the lighting comes from candles and the window through which the Headmaster is looking. Come in and do as your told.

OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet!

CLASS HAS BEGUN!!

They were done already? She looked at the prefect who she wasn't sure she was fully partners with or was to be enemies with and shrugged. She had least had her sack still so that was a good thing. She took it over and showed him before giving it back.

Going towards her spot again she raised her hand. "There are some creatures we have to earn their respect before they will let us touch them. If we don't have their respect they could harm us if we tried to get close." Not that she ever really had that problem, having a mom that had a sense for creatures helped in some ways even if it was totally weird and she hated every minute of it.

Avalon breathed a sigh of relief when Headmaster Trent signaled the end of the activity. No detention for her today, because both she and Nanette still had their own sacks. Although she was surprised that Trent was actually going through with the punishments. It seemed like just a scare tactic at first. She dropped her sack into the box with a smile, making a mental note to apologize to the Slytherin later for catching her off guard with a disarming spell.

The elder wand, huh? A curious wand indeed. Avalon raised her hand. "I wouldn't trust it because it doesn't form a true attachment with its owner." From what she knew about it, the wand could change its allegiance at the drop of a hat. Her bond with her own wand was special, and she couldn't imagine having it betray her if it sensed a more powerful presence to chase after. "It's only after power and strength, so the normal wand-wizard connection isn't really a thing with the elder wand. It's too unpredictable to be trustworthy, in my opinion."

Another thing that puzzled her about the elder wand? It seemed to prefer men. In all the history textbooks, there was no mention a woman possessing the wand. That bothered her just a bit.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine didn’t need Heath to answer her question; she already knew the answer. She wasn’t sure how to feel about the situation. On one hand, she knew his heart was in the right place and on the other, she was one of those independent girls who didn’t need saving of any kind from a guy. She also knew that Heath was sensitive and that he could easily mistake her reaction as a negative one. Still… she’d have to talk to him about him wanting to protect her; especially if he wanted to date her. Being independent was one trait that she was not willing to give up. The Snakette watched him demonstrate but wasn’t fully convinced. It was her knowledge that Heath was working on bettering his spellwork. For now, she’d relent so the only response that came from her was a nod.

As it was, the activity ended, anyway. Claudine’s eyes darted to Heath when she heard Trent’s words and already she knew what she was going to do and the Ravenclaw wasn’t going to stop her. She headed in Trent’s direction, showed him the two sacks but said nothing. Her silence should confirm that she was the one going to detention. Once the sacks were deposited into the box, she thought of an answer to the question. She wasn’t in the mood for much talking, especially to Trent but admittedly, she did not want another essay. Not when her schedule had become more packed since she helped Williamson at the barn daily. “It’s not the wand that does bad or good things, it’s the person wielding the wand who makes that choice,’’ came her simple response, her hand raised.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

In the midst of the crowd, Minjae finally spotted Nemesis. He would get the sack back and get revenge at the same time. Wand at the ready, the Hufflepuff had taken two steps when the Headmaster called for the end of the activity.

And Minjae had frozen. Not literally of course, that would be weird but he didn't have a sack of stones... His detention faith literally rested in Nemesis hands right now. This. Was. Stupid!

For the first time ever, Minjae had disliked a DADA class. Not the activity, oh no he secretly enjoyed it. But if the Headmaster hadn't been kidding earlier about the detentions, he would have enjoyed it even more.

Since he didn't have any sack, the sixth year walked over to the wall on the side and leaned against it with his arms crossed and looked away, his face a slight red color. Not because he was embarrassed but because he was annoyed. He refused to beg to Nemesis to give him the little bag back. He might be a Hufflepuff but he also had pride!

The Elder wand topic did make him look back though as it was an interesting topic. Was he in the mood to answer the question? Not really. But the thought of having to write an essay....

"The believe in it is what makes it such a strong wand" mweh he knew it was short and he could have elaborated on it some more but it had seemed that the Headmaster didn't appreciate long answers anymore. Another sign that made him suspicious that this was not their Headmaster but he needed real proof first. The answer was probably not even correct but he had said something. If he still got an essay assignment he was going to his Head of House.

The thrill of the chase was just one of those things. Admittedly, it was greatly muted due to the relatively tame nature of the lesson and activity, but Nem welcomed the idea that both Yoon and Escalante might be on their tail. Or just one. Hand to hand combat, anyone?

They had darted in between a couple of students and started to melt into the class at large - shame they weren't as small as they were only last term, could have been a real advantage - ... but then it was all over. Already. And that was that. The thrill was dead in the water.

If Yoon was already in detention by virtue of losing his sack of stones, and Nem could still give another name, who exactly would they choose? It wasn't something that they took great relish in; the activity itself had held all the appeal, rather than the potential outcomes, and now it was over, and Nem didn't particularly care who landed in detention. But they also weren't going to go all self-sacrificial, and so still took a quick glance around the class as they headed back to the Headsman, deciding it was best to choose carefully. By the time they'd unstuck the first bag from their hand with a muttered Avexis and had held them both up for him to see, they'd decided on a name. "Aboli Song." They dropped the bags into the box.

As they backed away again to listen to the next part of the lesson, Nem also landed on an answer for the Elder Wand question. They briefly raised a hand. "Reputation. Actual magical power, and legend, and unbeatable nature aside, the Elder Wand has a reputation for all those things, and that's what makes people go to any lengths to get it." Aka, part of what made it so great. "It has people fixating and deceiving and killing before they've ever even touched it. Influence is a whole different kind of power." There was really a whole lot more they could get into on the topic of the Elder Wand - and the topic of influence, as a matter of fact - but it was best to leave it there.

Anyway. That wand could probably do great things for an otherwise mediocre witch or wizard, but if you were already great and powerful and capable of some awe-inspiring feats, how much better would it be over a regular wand? Would it make you super-powerful, or just give a slight magical boost? It could do some spells that other wands couldn't, according to history, but if it could be made once, who was to say it, or something better, couldn't be made again? A less fickle version which never changed hands, long as you kept it zipped. Could a hypothetical someone reach the same potential without any wand at all? Things to think about. Maybe.

But yes, Nem absolutely would want to get hold of it. To test some theories and then firmly keep hold of it if it really did turn out to be that much of an asset. Being arrogant and overly self-assured, they had no reason to believe they'd have any trouble with it. "I wouldn't mind it. And I'd trust it... about as much as I trust my own. I just wouldn't go shouting about it if I had it." Wouldn't need to distrust the wand when it came to switching allegiance if people weren't swooping in to try and take it. Not only did they want the wand with the reputation, most of them probably wanted the reputation of mastering the wand.

And if he had caught his sack, he'd consider himself lucky. But what he did not expect was the entirety of Kale to come flying at him. Staring at his quickly approaching body like a deer caught in headlights, Morgan stood stunned until it was too late. When he finally had the sense to move out of the way, a collision was already imminent and he was knocked to the floor just as he started to shift to the left.

“Whoa, bro!” The fourteen year old lay sprawled on his back a moment, somewhat dazed. “That sorta worked.” Well, if it really worked he would have a sack of stones in his hand right now. He turned to see where Kale ended up.

With about half the students about to end up in detention, it would be a solid little cohort to put to work.

He glanced back in time to see the talkative question poser from the first suddenly casting a blinding light and you know what? It earned the faintest of smirks. Some...some of them had what it took to get far in life. He'd be keeping an eye on that one from now on.

But it was time to get moving and he wasn't sure where the students stood--a direct result of quite literally paying them no mind throughout the entire activity.

"Alright, bring it in." The man accioed a piece of parchment and a quill. "Show me your sacks as you return them to the box." The one right here by his side. "If you've got more than one, give me the name of the person you intend to send to detention. If you've got more than one and present no name, you've volunteered yourself." He counted, He knew how many there should be and wouldn't tolerate heroes today.

"Let's be quick about it because we're moving on." Step right up, children. [b]"While you're at it, I have another question, and another essay for anyone who decides they're above answering. There's a particular magical item that works under the same principle. To master it, you must first earn its respect then take it. I don't have the patience to listen to you blunder around looking for the right answer; it's the elder wand. What makes this wand so great--please, nothing as mundane as speaking to its power. We all know that already. Is it its principle? Its design? Its fickle nature? Do you personally believe this to be a good wand? Would you trust it?"

OOC: Sorry for the delay, guys. Yesterday got hectic. Onto the second question. The Headmaster is essentially asking your characters opinion on the elder wand. I'll be back to move class to the main activity in about 24-28 hrs. <3

When the two Gryffindors collided, Kale felt it in his teeth. BanG! It was a rough landing. Magic moved quick, yikes. And being pulled by the front of his trousers was a uniquely unpleasant experience.

The belt did all it could to contain the sack in question, but it strained against the material. It was probably an odd sight.

Sprawled on his back, Kale didn't bother to try and stop the sack from escaping. His clothes did all of the work for him. NOW, if MF wanted to grab it himself, he was welcome to that particular adventure.

The task wrapped up quickly after their whoopsie daisy. Kale gruffly hauled himself to his feet and pointedly ignored his Dad. He knew lots about the Elder Wand, but if Dad-master wanted an answer from Kale, well, he perhaps should have been nicer.

So when she handed in both sacks, she just looked at the headmaster coldly and didn't say a name. At least she would be in detention with Sophie now. Maybe they shouldn't have played hot potato and instead kept their sacks. Ashley felt slightly regretful. But it was too late now. "I don't think the elder wand is specifically evil, but I think it tends towards evil because of all the power. I wouldn't trust it or want to use it." No thank you. Ashley liked her wand just fine. She hoped this detention wouldn't be too bad. This activity was a chance to see who everyone's real friends are, she supposed. Right about now people with two sacks would be sending each other to detention. That would probably cause drama. Ashley refused to do that though. She thought of this less of a win against others activity and more of a how do I save me and my friends game. Maybe she should have just given both sacks to Sophie.
Sophie had been really impressed with Ashley's use of Wingardium Leviosa. She needed to practice that one more. But then, sadly, before she had a chance to use the spell herself the Headmaster called an end to the activity. Slightly panicking, she watched the Ravenclaw turn in the two sacks to the Headmaster. When Ashley didn't say her name, Sophie felt a huge amount of relief...and admiration of her. Maybe this meant they were friends now. Sophie smiled at the thought.

When it was her turn to answer the Headmaster's question, she paused a moment to think. She didn't know a whole lot about the Elder Wand, just what she'd read in some books. She knew it was a very powerful artifact and like the Headmaster said, you had to earn its power by winning it from someone. Remembering that the Headmaster was a stickler for brevity, Sophie tried to be as concise as possible in her answer.

"What's most impressive about the Elder Wand is that, because of its fickle nature, to own the Elder Wand shows everyone how powerful and strong you are. Only a powerful wizard can wield the Elder Wand."

Sophie thought about whether she would actually trust the wand or want to use it. "As long as you wish to demonstrate your power and conquer your enemies, the wand is trustworthy. It respects the one with the most power."

She didn't go so far as to say that she would actually use the wand, but if it came right down to it she knew she probably would. Power was hard to resist, especially if you knew you could do great things with it.

Charlie glanced at Torin and then the room, was there someone she could trip in order to make sure she had a baggie of stones. Was there anyone close so she could...? Great no one. She was really heated with Headmaster Trent. He seemed to be a whole lot of ridiculous these days.

Elder wand. What did she know, what did she know? “The power isn’t controlled by the wand, like good or evil. It’s all about the person who has the wand and their intentions as to if the power will be good or bad.” Right she really hated having to take this ridiculous class, could she be done now?

Placing her bag of gems into the bin she ducked her head hoping he wasn’t serious about detentions.

Welp - she had ended up crippling Bernie's mental abilities resulting in being detrimental to Bernie's sack-keeping skills. A younger Gryffindor just bloody TOOK it. She GLARED at the kid, heard Headmaster Trent wrap them up, and panicked.

Oh no.

She had given Bernie a fake sack, and now he was saying if they turned it in, they'd have detention. And Bernie was...still troll!stupid, and so Aboli just took the fake sack from Bernie's pocket and shoved it in her own. She wouldn't turn it in. She pulled her own sack out of her sleeve and glanced from it - to Bernie - back to it - and before she could make a decision between sacrificing herself or feeding Bernie to the wolves, she heard her name up front.

.....

Nemesis Upstead?! What had she EVER done to them?! What happened to SNAKE PRIDE? The glariest of GLARES was shot across the room at them, and Aboli's face set into a deep look of loathing. Well CRAP. Now she had detention anyway, so she just placed the bag in Bernie's hand. "Here. I've got detention anyway, so let's go turn this in for you." She hooked arms with Bernie and pulled her to the front. "Professor, she got hit with a jelly-brain hex riiiiight as you called time...so....here's her sack. I got mine stolen earlier," she shrugged. "You get to look forward to detention with ME," she shot him a smile and nudged Bernie to give over the sack. "Bernie, you should name Nemesis as the person you want get detention. He probably wouldn't mind detention..." she shrugged and glanced their way.

But then the fellow seventh year started speaking and......... uhhhhhhh????????? A duel. A dUEL?!

Hello, internal screaming.

The smile instantly vanished. He could already see how this mini duel was going to turn out. Carsyn was probably going to be great at it - didn't she do duelling club?! - while Lucas............ well. He just knew that this duel wasn't going to last very long.

If anything, he would've liked to go with the second option but he didn't have a game on him either which only meant one thing. "Well, I guess that's fair." he sighed, taking out his wand. He tried his best to give her a smile before walking a few steps away from her. Just a few, but not close enough that she could easily grab his sack of stones.

Reaching the right spot, Lucas turned around and held his wand up, getting into his best duelling stance. It was okay. This was going to be oKAY.

"Ready, Carsyn?"
That's exactly what she was thinking because well, after six years of classes with someone, you sort of learned who was good at what subject by now. And perhaps a duel was the wrong suggestion, given the panic that she noted on his expression but honestly Carsyn was just trying to think of some sort of fair way that didn't involve being physical because she got the sense that wasn't Luca's style.

But when he agreed on its fairness she nodded, cause that was pretty much all she was trying to do. "Ready as I'll ever be." And just as she bowed and considering her first spell to cast, the Headmaster called attention to them and told them to bring their sacks up to the box. She bit her lip apologetically at her co-prefect. "Guess we're out of luck on one of us seeing detention, huh?" She murmured as she turned toward the wall to reach down the front neckline of her shirt and remove the sack. Turning back around, she plopped the one sack into the box, giving an apologetic look to Trent.

Magical item that worked under the same principle. What was he talking about? Oh..... The elder wand. What did they know about the Elder wand. "It's the wood that gives it these properties." At least she was pretty sure that the different woods gave it differing properties, but wasn't that basic wand knowledge? "A wand is, as others mentioned, only as good as the wizard yielding it. It doesn't matter if it's the elder wand or something more common."

Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Mamie showed the single sack of stones she held before dropping it back into the box with the other students'. It wasn't the same bag of rocks she had started with, for the record. She had that much to be proud of.

Especially since she didn't know the answer to the next question. An elder wand? Elder was...a type of tree, right? She frowned. So, this wand went between people? Like these bags that people were literally fighting over. She thought the wand chose the wizard. So...the wand chose bullies?

Mamie raised her hand. "I wouldn't trust the elder wand," she said. "No-not if it chooses whoever is the biggest bully."

Phoebe made very sure that Kinsay had her own sack of stones firmly in hand before ending their game. No one was putting baby sister into detention, OKAY? Not even that cranky old Headman (his cranky was much less endearing today than normal). She returned her own sack with a jaunty grin to the Headman.

Back beside Kizzy, Phoebe returned her attention to the topic at hand. The Elder Wand? It wasn't like they were going to encounter that, so why teach it in a Defense class? Silly, really. Still, she raised her hand. "It sounds terribly fickle to me, and I would expect magical items not to be fickle... or else not to be trusted. The fact that some wizards murdered each other to gain possession of it, but it would also change ownership just because someone is disarmed in a fight... I mean, what good is a wand that turns on you because you lose a measly duel?"

The threat of detention was weird. Ivy didn't really want to send anyone else to detention, but she also didn't want detention herself, so once she'd had a partner she tried only half-heartedly to get it from them. Once the Headmaster said the activity was over, she silently turned in her own sack. All good, right?

Oh, and now they were talking about...the Elder Wand? That was the topic of today's lesson? With that in mind, the mini activity made a...tiny bit of sense. Were the sacks meant to represent the Elder Wand, and if they got someone else's and sent them to detention, that was sorta representing them being defeated and/or killed, like what happened to people with the actual wand?

Well, at least she understood somewhat better now.

As for the actual discussion... "I don't think I'd really trust it either, if I had it," Ivy said, raising her hand. "But also, I think that'd extend to not trusting other people too, because I wouldn't want other people to know I had it. All it takes is one person to accidentally tell someone else, and then the news spreads, and then you basically have a big target on your back." And she wouldn't want that to happen to herself, if she had the Elder Wand in this hypothetical scenario. What was the point in having a powerful wand if you had to constantly fear someone was going to take it from you?

Valencia returned a not her original sack. No detention and ended up with a different bag. Win-win.

She headed back to her spot and considered the question. How did she feel about the Elder Wand? After formulating her thoughts she raised her hand to offer her perspective. "I personally don't think it's all that great. I think there are some people that desire it because of the notoriety. I also don't think it's a good or evil wand. I think it has flawed alliances. But most of the reasoning behind people thinking it's 'evil' is due to the people that possess it or want to possess it or the means by which those people possess it. That sort of notoriety just attracts that sort of crowd."

So. The good news was that Josh's sack had not been touched during this whole activity.

The bad news was that he had just so happened to be looking in the direction of the bright light cast by Nemesis and that had been a whole THING that he had not anticipated nor entirely adapted to. Normally it would have been a few blinks and then good to go, but he was a bit more sensitive to these things these days and...well...he was still seeing little rainbow spots with his eyes open and while closed. But the bad news didn't end there and his stomach dropped a bit when he realized that he had absolutely no idea where his sack of stones was now. It was...somewhere around here...

Uuuuuuuuh...

Scrambling back towards where he had been at the start of the activity, the Gryffindor patted the ground and felt nothing out of place for a bit before remembering that Finite was a whole thing. With a wave of his wand, Josh cast it in the general vicinity and entirely expected it to fad back into visual existence. Only it didn't.

Well...that was...well...shoot.

"I've got no sacks, professor," Josh confessed as he, er, just moved away from that area and over to the box with a bit of an emphasis on his empty hands. "So...see you in detention then. Sir." And you too Aboli, heyo. Little bit too apprehensive to admit to the fact that his was MISSING but...oh well.

As to the conversation about the Elder Wand, Josh wasn't sure what to say but knew he had to say SOMETHING otherwise the headmaster was going to go off his rocker again. He actually found himself agreeing a bit with Valencia about the general nature of the wand itself. "I've sort of always felt like the Elder Wand kind of reflected a sort of narrow mindedness thinking of wizarding kind and general assumption...power and strength being evil and you can only win it's loyalty through killing and death. Which I guess is a little fitting since the whole Thestral hair core and those creatures too suffer from negative associations because of the association with death. It's more people I wouldn't trust...rather than the wand itself...and probably make me a little paranoid...but then the wand will only serve you if you have accepted death, right? Like how you can only see a Thestral if you have seen and accepted death too? So...if you're paranoid and then all bonkers over someone killing you and taking the wand...then you're not really accepting death either and, well, sort of your own fault then if the wand won't serve you anymore."

Kinsay still had her sack at the end of the activity! SEE? It was RIGHT here. She did have the distinct feeling that Phoebe let her keep it though, which was why Fifi was the best sister in the whole entire world and also the UK. It helped her feel lots better even though Professor Trent had been mean before, Kizzy wasn't upset now. Skipping right behind her sister, Kiz returned her sack of stones to the box.

Giving Phoebe another side hug, she looked back up to the Headmaster and thought about his question. She didn’t know too much about the elder wand, except that it was one of the three Deathly Hallows. Which was kind of weird because she saw TWO Deathly Hallows graffiti paintings over the summer in Diagon Alley and her mummy said it was hateful and cousin Cooper told her all about the story with three brothers and also about this old guy named Grindelwald. It was a little strange because this sounded more like something they would learn about in History of Magic. But even though she knew all of these things, she didn’t know how to answer the question.

So she thought about it some more.

”Professor?” She started innocently. ”Even if the elder wand is good, I like my wand better. It chose me. My mum and the wandmaker said that that makes it special and powerful.” It was 100% facts.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

It never dawned on Heath that Claudine might not want him to protect her. Growing up in a mostly Gryffindor family meant he was raised with their strict, if dated, standards of chivalry, and that meant he was supposed to protect the girl at all times, no matter how minor the threat. It was all he knew to do. As such, he didn’t see any meaning, negative or otherwise, behind her reaction, other than possibly wanting to avoid trouble by avoiding unnecessary chatter. He reholstered his wand as Headmaster Trent called time, and it was only when he heard the man’s next set of instructions that he realized he’d made a terrible mistake. By trying to help Claudine, he unwittingly set her up for more trouble. Give my name, he thought as he watched her go to the front to hand in their sacks. I’ve already got one detention anyway…

Unfortunately, Heath couldn’t communicate telepathically with her, and even if he could, he knew she had a mind of her own. He was hardly surprised when she refused to give a name, and he couldn’t blame her. He would’ve done the same thing! If anything, he blamed himself. If he hadn’t tried to be the knight in shining armor, they could’ve come up with a plan to keep their sacks, and neither of them would be headed to detention now! He looked down, unable to bring himself to look at Claudine, but he betrayed no sign of the remorse he felt, nor any other emotion as he showed the headmaster that he had no sack.

So Heath had been almost right in thinking the last activity was meant to symbolize a life or death situation. As soon as he heard the words “elder wand”, it made sense, but understanding the activity’s purpose did not mean he approved of its execution. Regardless, he considered the next question carefully. The last question seemed designed to weed out defiance, so what if this question was a trick too? If it was, Heath had no idea if it was meant to weed out those who did or did not trust the wand, but he knew what the consequences for silence were. Unwilling to risk the headmaster’s wrath again, all he could do was give an honest answer and hope it was what the man wanted to hear. “Its fickleness is the reason I wouldn’t trust it,” he said after raising his hand. “Its allegiance changes in its owner’s moment of vulnerability, and in that situation, I’d prefer a wand that isn’t as easily turned.”

As the students began to make their way over, the Headmaster held his wand poised to begin taking names for detention. He'd yet to figure out what he would do with them but in a place like this, he didn't suspect it would take much.

Ignoring the warning Cole casted "Protego Maxima!" to shield both him and Cece from harm. Who knew what ideas Aboli could get. Then he focused on the nice looking sack by Bernie’s feet casting "Accio Bernie’s stone sack!" with a firm tone, expecting it to fly over to him any second now.. Spells usually worked better if you emphasized the incantation.

Then suddenly only minutes later Headmaster Trent ended the activity and expected them to return their sacks to the box. "I’ve got my sack and Bernadette’s sack." Cole told the headmaster as he went to put the sacks back in it’s box. As for the question he thought long before he raised his hand to answer. "I think the elder wand is neither good nor bad; it depends on its owner and what he/she does with it if it does good things or evil things. Like Harry Potter used it only for the good of everyone like when he defeated Voldermort once and for all by using the Elder wand. I would not trust an object that is so powerful because it will probably make you do things you will regret later." If you are even alive.

He barely looked up at the approaching Gryffindor. He had his sack and someone named Bernadette's.

"And who will you be sending to detention?" Or had the boy conveniently forgotten he was meant to provide that as well. "This your way of volunteering yourself?" It was also an option and the Headmaster didn't care either way.

He listened as the boy went into a ramble on things he didn't ask about. Good? Evil? Neither? That wasn't the question asked. Thankfully the boy got to the point in the final sentence. "Fine."

"Mine are all in here sir, sorry, permanent sticking charm. But it worked a treat!" He tried to justify. "I didn't get anyone else's though." I was trying to stay alive.

What makes this wand so great? An interesting question. Torin spoke up then, "Well sir, it's core is Thestral tail hair is it not? They're extraordinary creatures themselves and using this as it's core is only possible by accepting death if I've read correctly. I think this in itself wields a lot of weight behind it. I think I'd trust whatever wand I'm the true owner of, I wouldn't necessarily trust the people around me. Many died for another to try and gain the wand. I don't think that's something I'd want to die for." He finished.

"Well cut it off and place the sack back in the box, I'm not your maid." And he had no need for a robe that was attached to the sack. Nevermind the boy would only use it as an excuse to be out of uniform from now on. "Sorry, Headmaster, I don't have my robe. I gave it to you, remember?"

Hard pass. "Mend your robe on your own time."

"An interesting take, I'll grant you. Would the wand truly belong to you? Winning it from someone, is that all it takes to be the master of the elder wand?" Something to think on.

No name again?

Her name would suffice and it was scribbled down. This one was another to answer a question he didn't ask. Why did they think he wanted to know if the wand was good or evil?

The Headmaster listened impatiently, though it didn't show, until the girl finally got to an answer he'd asked for. No, she wouldn't trust it. "Fine." Next.

And then there was this one.

"That has nothing to do with the question I asked." He replied, matter of fact and unimpressed. "Last I checked, this was Defense Against the Dark Arts, not Care of Magical Creatures. You'll do well to remember that."

Good on her for retaining her own sack. Mediocre work, at best.

"A fair statement, I suppose." To someone such as her. "It doesn't waste time on sentimentality. It seeks ultimate power and the wielder of ultimate power. One must be willing to step up to the challenge. If you do not intend to lose, you have no worry of it changing allegiance."

And that was truly the only way to live.

The Prefect was another to possess only her sack. Quite mediocre, quite.

No wand and no answer to the question he actually asked. Coming from the girl who'd earlier earned herself an essay, it wasn't a good look at all.

His lips formed a hard line as she finished her reply.

"I haven't asked you about the wand's character, merely its quality and dependability. Try paying attention, you may understand the next time I ask a question." A well earned detention if he ever saw it. Her earlier silence was accepted.

No sack at all? Not very impressive, in fact, it was below the mediocre work several of the boy's classmate's had done. They'd at least managed to keep their own sack.

His answer was equally so.

"Inaccurate. The wand's power is what makes it strong. Whether you believe in it or not, it still does the job." What a....ridiculously childish and silly thing to say. Did the boy's year make him expect better? Well, somewhat, yes.

This one...he decided he liked this one. Yes, it was a shaky, talkative start but this one had turned things around and shown they had what it took to go places.

Without question or so much as a quirk of his brow, he wrote down the name offered. No hesitation, just the way he liked it. Bold and willing to get it done. Was there ever a more model student? And listen to the model response.

"You're definitely not wrong. The prestige that goes with that wand already adds to its value. Very good. I'd like you to take 5 points as well, for ruthless drive to get it done. It was much appreciated among your lacklustre cohort." Partnering up, exchanging sacks, talking things through. Pathetic.

And a smirk. Yes, it wouldn't do well to broadcast owning such a wand.

No answer and only his sack to show after the activity. Coming in behind the other student, was there ever a more disappointing...son? As if the earlier blunder and overall pathetic performance wasn't enough salt in a wound he couldn't feel.

"I expect that 1,500 word essay on the Elder wand by the end of the week." And that was all he'd say on that.

He'd been very clear on what happened to those who didn't answer questions.

Another to lose her sack. Another for detention and her name was taken down.

At least her answer wasn't as disappointing as the others. On the contrary, it was one of the only ones that made sense. "Indeed." The Headmaster agreed. "To possess the wand, you must defeat its owner and they before you would have had to do the same."

A true test of strength and power. Perhaps there was hope for this one afterall.

No sack? Tough luck.

"I didn't ask if the wand was good or evil, I asked about its quality. Have you also not been paying attention or do you simply not grasp simple questions?"

Not good enough to protect her sack and not smart enough to answer a straight forward question. Her detention was well deserved.

"You get to look forward to detention with ME," she shot him a smile and nudged Bernie to give over the sack. "Bernie, you should name Nemesis as the person you want get detention. He probably wouldn't mind detention..." she shrugged and glanced their way.

Ah, she already had detention. The sack would not lend her immunity. That Upstead kid owed him another name.

"Fix her." He said, as if the answer wasn't obvious enough. The activity was over. They'd been working together. She would fix her and they would get back to the lesson. The Headmaster had no time for childish distractions.

"And I expect that 1,500 word essay on the Elder wand on my desk by the end of the week. You've got time to be filling my ears with nonsense about jinxes and detentions but you can't answer a question?"

Not a good look, Ms. Prefect.

Don't think he didn't realize that neither Gryffindor Prefect actually got anywhere with defending or claiming sacks. He may need to have a talk with them later about initiative. Perhaps he should give them detention anyway.

"I didn't ask if it was good or evil." Not many things inherently were. "I merely asked after its quality." Was it the sort of wand one would want to own? Was it the sort to leave you high and dry in a duel?

Why would he ask children with shaky at best ideas on morality about the character of such a powerful wand?

Mamie raised her hand. "I wouldn't trust the elder wand," she said. "No-not if it chooses whoever is the biggest bully."

Only one sack. Yet another disappointing student.

"Inaccurate and immature." He replied. "It chooses those with power. When you possess that wand, you open yourself to competition. You expect to be sought after and if you cannot protect the wand, you do not deserve the wand. Is that any different than a keeper who loses because he cannot defend his goal?"

Only her sack. Tsk. It was unimpressive to say the least.

As to her question, he could easily turn that around. "What good is a caster who can't keep possession?" Why should such a powerful wand be bound to someone who is mediocre at best when it has so much potential to be unleashed?"

The wand wasn't the problem, it was whoever lost it.

"That's some smart thinking." It almost made up for the girl only returning her own sack. As a group, they lacked that special bit of drive and ruthlessness that could take them far. Too bogged down by sentimentality. It was a shame.

"The people you tell aren't the only ones you should worry over. Those who find out will want to come after you. So long as you possess that wand, you have a target on your back. Your life becomes substantially more hectic after that."

Best to keep it to yourself if you could.

One more with only one sack. Were they always this far removed from the drive they needed to succeed? Sheesh.

Once again, he hadn't asked whether the wand was good or evil. That was far from the question, but he listened while the girl worked through her thoughts aloud. Some of it was relevant to the question, so he let it go.

"That sort of notoriety does attract a certain sort, yes. And that can become a, inconvenience." Though if you were good enough, it was only a minor inconvenience. Nothing more.

That.....that was a lot.

The Headmaster tuned out at some point during that entire spiel, coming back to find the boy was still talking, about death. Right. Of course. He nodded along, attentive as you like but the man would never understand these students's obsession with providing long and winding responses. Who had the time to sit through all these?

At the end, he nodded. "Yes."

Sure, kid.

It took every muscle in his entire body to restrain his face from contorting in displeasure at the little girl's response. It was as useless as it was nauseating.

"Do you listen to everything your mother and wandmaker say?" He challenged, tempted to give her that essay for not truly making an attempt at answering his question.

Children.

Another of the many soft children in this class. He didn't think he'd be able to survive the year with the lot of them, but there was work to be done.

To his credit, the Headmaster did not roll his eyes. "The wand is not fickle, it responds to power. If you are not powerful enough to protect it, why should it in turn, give you allegiance?" That was not how the world work and these children had a lot of growing to do.

"Alright, we're moving on again. But first, I'd like to commend this one here," He said, pointing over to Upstead. "For being just about the only one who understood what this activity was meant to be and carried it out. This business of forming alliances, sharing sacks, exchanging, it's NOT how the real world works and certainly not in the context of today's lesson. The next time I give instructions, I expect them to be carried out like Upstead did." Which reminded him. He turned to the student again. "You owe me another name. That one already has detention."

Now then, where was he?

"The day's topic needs little introduction so I'll keep this brief. We will not be discussing good or evil." For all those who attempted to bring it up. "The Elder wand is one of three objects in the infamous "Dealthy Hallows". We'll touch on its brother objects in another lesson. It was the first Hallow made and is said to have been made by death itself. It comes then, as no surprise, that in order to wield it, you must also accept death. It's not bullies who come after you, it is wizards of equal ambition. People just like you. It is you who knows the risk but accept them because of the wand's magnificent power. When you take this wand from someone, you understand there is only one road for you and you do not let this dampen your ambition."

They had to be willing to do whatever to possess such a powerful wand. Upstead was the only to show such promise. They could all learn a thing or two from that one.

"Its power is not all inflated tales either. It is the most powerful wand in existence. Even the worst wizard can perform amazing feats of magic, typically impossible even for the best wizards with comparatively inferior wands. It is not for the faint of heart." Which excluded nearly all of them immediately.

"Now pay attention, you'll want to do this next part right, not like that last. We'll be having duels. You may choose your partner but you MUST duel. Each of you now possesses an Elder wand. I don't think I need to explain what that means but I will all the same. You will disarm your opponent then you will keep their wand for the remainder of the week. If you cannot protect your wand, you will go without. If you win that wand and give it back before the end of the week, I will take your wand for the act of open defiance. Fight dirty, fight clean, it's all the same to me. Should you possess a real Elder wand, no one will be asking you what spells it's okay to cast on you so do yourself a favour and act accordingly. Don't build bad habits." Were they all clear on that? This was the Elder wand. It was not a toy. They needed to understand the weight of its consequences and he couldn't very well kill them.

"You'll go in turns. Who's first?"

OOC: Main activity time! You will be dueling in pairs. Just pretend it's your character's turn to duel as IC it's one match at a time. You don't need to wait on anyone outside of your pair. I'll be closing this lesson sometime around 11pm GMT-5 on September 13. Physical force, magic, objects, Trent doesn't really care BUT y'know, it's a magic wand so they'd probably be getting more practice using magic. If you do not have a partner, let me know. PLEASE don't post an open post after someone else's. If someone is open, just grab them rather than adding to the number, that way we ensure everyone has a pair. Have fun!! <3

Yeah yeah yeah. He knew his answer had been lackluster but he did not care. Maybe it was the strange way the NOT Headmaster was behaving. Maybe it was because he was bitter that he had lost earlier and his "partner" had been complimented or maybe it was just teenage hormonal stuff. Whatever it was, Minjae was not his usual self. Everything seemed to set him off in the wrong way.

He did listen carefully to the next set of instructions and he felt annoyance rise again. What in Merlin's Beard was the Headmaster talking about?! No wand for a week? How were they supposed to do their other lessons then?!

This. Was. Stupid!

Knowing 100% that the "Headmaster" would take away his wand without hesitation if he left right now, the Hufflepuff stayed in the room. He was going to duel, something that he was confident about, and keep his "elder wand"

Now, he first needed a partner. His eyes immediately sought out Nemesis. He wanted, no NEEDED revenge on him but at the same time he had the feeling that he would lose.

Revenge? Or safety? Revenge? Safety?

He'd wait till anyone approached him. No matter who it was. He was keeping his wand. Bring it on.

Seriously? The loser loses their wands for a week? Ashley did not want to lose her wand, but on the other hand, she didn't want to take someone else's. She looked over at Minjae, who looked like he was like, boiling, or something. She walked over to him and smiled. "Wanna be my partner?" She knew that she would let him win. He needed and wanted his wand more anyway. Ashley had gone without magic for years. She could handle another week. This way she could purposefully lose without even asking. She wouldn't even have to fake it. It was a foolproof plan. Better me lose my wand than anyone else, she thought bravely to herself. That's just the way it went. She took a couple of deep breaths to prepare herself for losing.

Default someone grab avalon!

Poor Aboli and Kale. The essay assignments and detentions just kept coming, didn't they? Avalon felt a little sorry for all the first years, who were probably scared out of their wits at Trent's disciplinary actions and attitude. Sure, he was rough around the edges, but he wasn't always this bad. At least, he didn't use to be. Thankfully, her answer wasn't nearly as stupid as some of her classmates' responses. The Headmaster didn't seem to be totally disappointed with her, which was honestly as much as she could ask for.

Although she was a bit confused as to why he was making such a big deal about Nem. If it had been any other day and someone had cast a spell like that, Trent might have freaked out and yelled at them for using unnecessary magic. You never knew with that man.

Another activity with some ruthless consequences. She did not want to lose this one. An entire week without her wand? No thanks. Avalon had gone an entire half of a term without magic last year, and it had been dreadful. Her mind raced with spell possibilities as she scanned the room for someone in need of a partner.

While his mind was still preoccupied with REVENGE ON NEMESIS, he had barely missed one of the Ravenclaws approaching him. Maybe because she was so small, first year and all that. "We met in the train right?" he asked as her face looked vaguely familiar. He sighed in his mind, he didn't want to take a first years wand. First year against Sixth year, it simply wasn't fair but refusing would probably hurt her pride because it would make the suggestion that he was better than her without even trying. He already was better than her but first years could surprise you. Maybe she had hidden talent like he had had during his first year. "Alright, i know i'm a lot more experienced than you are but i still want you to give it all you got , promise me that" he said, he didn't want to win a duel when his opponent wasn't even trying to win.

Did he really have to duel her? Minjae eyed the girl carefully. She had promised to give it all she got but even then this will be too easy. Uuuugh he wanted a cool and epic duel! Still, he had promised and he was a man of his words. And maybe if he was quick he could go on to duel someone else? Someone more experienced and not afraid to DUEL.

Taking out his wand from his robe, the Hufflepuff kept it at the ready before he took a bow. He wasn't sure if this was what the Headmaster wanted seriously whatever they did everything seemed to be wrong but every duel began with a bow right? Respect and all that. His eyes had never stopped looking at the girl though in case she decided to attack while he was bowing. "Incarcerous!" he shouted the moment he got back up and followed it with an "Expelliarmus!" and watched as the ropes and disarming light traveled her way.

Ashley bowed back. Was she supposed to do that? She dodged out of the way of expelliarmus but got hit with the incarcerous. Oop. Now she was stuck. She scrabbled at the rope with her hand and managed to get her wand through. She sent a jelly-fingers hex in his direction. All of a sudden an idea came into her head. "Petrificus Totalus!" She only had her mid-forearms through the ropes at this point, so she was basically a T. rex. She looked pretty ridiculous as she hopped towards him, trying to squirm free of the ropes and hoping that the spell worked.
