Care of Magical Creatures: They See Me Trollin', They Hatin'
Welcome back! It's the first week of school and time for your first Care of Magical Creatures lesson in the EVENING. What a fun change of pace, eh? As you walk through the grounds, you'll notice the sun is going down slowly, making for a beautiful sunset full of golds and reds, purples and pinks. It's a warm September evening, for now, but you might draw your cloak about you tighter as a low little fog rolls in from the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
You'll also notice that you can't actually see very far into the usual fenced-in classroom space because it is getting dark already. There's standing room only in the classroom for now, with none of the usual hay bales and stumps around to sit on, but there is one interesting addition to the classroom space...
A small wooden table is in the center of the area with an ornate stone pensieve resting quietly in the center of it. Williamson stands just behind the pensieve, looking down in it as though lost in thought.
Lesson Progression:
Q1: What do we need to keep in mind and at hand when working with dangerous creatures, particularly those rated XXXX and XXXXX on the Ministry scale?
Q2: What do YOU think trolls and troll society is like? How do you think you should handle them?
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
She didn't RUN to CoMC like she'd intended to the moment she arrived at school. A lot had happened since arriving. Once she settled in and classes began, one thing became glaringly obvious to Emmerson N. J. Cambridge. This was just school. There were more kids and her mummy didn't pick her up at 3...but it was still school. Suffice to say most of the general excitement had died. Add to that she was starving and needed this class to be over to have dinner and you had a nearly disgruntled little lion.
Nearly. This was still the first time she'd get to be around a ton of magical creatures and she was HERE FOR IT.
"Hey Professor Sir!" She chirped, coming to a stop just beside the man--nearly touching him she was so close--to get a look for herself. "I'm Emmerson. Emmerson Cambridge. I'm the one who wrote you that letter over the summer. D'you remember?" Unsure what it was that fascinated him so, Emm reached over to tug at his shirt.
"What'chu lookin' at? Did you put a creature down there? It must be REAL small to fit." Which ruled out a lot of the creatures she was hoping it could be.

CECELIA SUMMERS IN THE HOUSE!
Okay, there wasn’t an actual house, but Cecelia had arrived and there was a definite pep in her step. She liked night lessons a bunch, actually. Something about the atmosphere just made you feel like anything could happen and she was obviously a fan of that type of excitement.
”Hi Professor!” The Creatures teacher got a finger wiggly wave in greeting and a big smile. ”Super nice night.”
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Had he forgotten that he had a class in the evening?
Absolutely not! Yes, he had
Minjae speedwalked out of the castle after running back to his dormitory to grab his textbook and took a short cut on the Grounds he had found the previous year. He loosened his black cloak a little as he was starting to feel warm and he couldn't wait to sit on one of the stumps in the classroom. Imagine his disappointment when they weren't present!
The sixth year sighed, though that might also have been from being slightly out of breath and turned his attention to the pensieve that the professor was looking in. The little first year's question had been on his mind as well. What was he doing? No point in asking twice of course. "Hello Professor" he greeted with a simple nod of his head and walked away to find a place to stand and turned his school bag to his front and reached inside to grab his .....History of Magic book.

Adam wasn't sure how he felt about this night class thing. On the one hand that was SUPER cool, but the warning that Trent had given them at the opening feast about the Forbidden Forest was still fresh in his brain. What if a werewolf came out of there and charged at them?! There were too many kids here for Williamson to protect all of them!
"Hello Professor," Adam said with a polite smile as he walked into the circle, getting towards the front of the gathering so he could stay nice and close to Williamson - JUST in case. Why was he staring at that bowl of water? Surely he knew there were better ways to observe your reflection, right? Like...a mirror?

Ashley shifted on her feet, arms crossed. The professor looked like they were in a mood. "Hi," she said quietly. She wished there was someone she knew here. Well there was the kid from the train. And the girl from the cauldron shop. But still. She didn't know know them. She was excited for this class. Care of Magical Creatures? Ashley didn't know much about magical animals but she read the whole school book, had 2 pets, and liked animals. She figured that was good enough. She waited for the class to start, pulling out some muggle markers and shading in the drawing on her arm. It was unclear where she got all the muggle drawing materials from, but she sure seemed to have a lot. While she was at it, she started drawing flowers on her other arm. Blue flowers.
Night lessons were always an interesting change of pace. Although usually reserved for Astronomy and occasionally Divination, Avalon was excited to experience Care of Magical Creatures in the evening. She wondered why they needed to meet as dusk. Maybe they'd be working with noctural creatures? Either way, the Ravenclaw was grateful that the weather was still mild. It was hard to believe that in just a few weeks from now, she'd need much more than her robes to keep her warm. Winter always came quickly at Hogwarts.
"Good evening, Professor,"Avalon said with a smile, peering curiously at the pensive. She didn't notice any cages or creature pens. What in the world would they be studying?
Beautiful sunset? Not interested. If it wasn't the apocalypse sky, it wasn't worth noting. What could Nem do with that kaleidoscope view up there? Whole lotta nothing, that's what.
At least it was a Creatures lesson, and with the one and only Walter White Weasley William William Henry Stephen Whatever. Aka, the provider of Noia, Nem's not-so-baby knarl. The fact that he'd not come after them about it yet implied the guy hadn't yet remembered, but Nem figured it might be wise to avoid mention of knarls, hedgehogs, or Christmas for a little while longer.
"Evening," they greeted the apparently preoccupied professor, hopping up to perch on the fence that surrounded the lesson area. A pensieve in Care of Magical Creatures? Could be promising. "Looks like someone's throwing another rave in the forest." Yeah, yeah, it was fog, not smoke. Relax.
And there was that Cambridge girl. Nem had heard a bit about her, through Ez, and about her mother, through Jake. After going so long imagining another little arachnophobic wimp like Ezra, it was an experience to witness the bold and incessant little chatterbox who spoke like she was being paid by the word.

Claudine’s absolute fave lesson and she was bouncing with excitement. Okay, the bouncing would be figurative because her emotions were usually reserved. It didn’t even bother her that the lesson was being held in the evening. No, all that was important was that she was going to be amongst some majestic, wonderful, fun, crabby, furry, hissing, {insert other descriptions here} creature. The evening sky was barely even noticed by her. I mean, creatures! They were enough of a distraction for her.
Wondering if they’d need the help of magic to see better during the lesson, the girl came to a halt as she observed the place’s set up. There was no place for sitting but… was that a pensieve??? Steps were taken so that she came to a stop before the table, even though she wasn’t close enough to touch it or the pensieve.
Um…
Should Williamson be disturbed?
He looked lost in thought.
How about his prodigy/fave student just lurk here silently for now?
An evening class was a nice change indeed. Aboli was fed and still awake for now. It had been a tiring first week thus far, but she was still chugging along! She was also trying to be as CHEERFUL as possible...even with Val seemingly ignoring her.
She wasn't sad at all. There were no tears anywhere...not even at 3am...by herself in her dorm...nope...
None.
ABOLI DID NOT CARE.
"Minjae, did you grab the wrong book?" she asked as she went to linger next to him before clicking her tongue in mock disappointment. "You need an assistant to help you, clearly. Perhaps you can pay a younger Hufflepuff to do your bidding," she smirked to show that she was cleaaaaarly joking. "Also HELLLLLLO Professor W!" she exclaimed with a BIIIIIG wave.
There was Avalon..Nem...Claudine...loud younger students...this would be at least an interesting class. And was that a pensieve????? What was THAT doing in a creatures class??

“Hello, professor sir.” The eleven year old greeted cheerfully as she moved to the front, curiously wondering what the professor was looking at. “Hope you’re doing well today.. sir”

Naya was in a good mood. It was a beautiful night and she was enjoying her leisurely walk to her absolute favorite.......class........ ever. The strange thing was the hour. They never had Care of Magical Creatures this late in the day. Were they studying bats? Owls? The seventh year was truly curious.
Hello Professor, Naya said cheerfully. as she reached the classroom area. That’s when things got weirder. Professor Williamson was standing in front of a pensive. Naya couldn’t imagine what it would have to do with magical creatures. Were they going to see a Newt Scamander memory or something? Her curiousity piqued, she found a place to stand and set her backpack on the ground. She would just have to wait to find out the topic of the class. Patience was not Naya’s strong suit.

It was deeply unfair of the Professor to schedule class in the evening, during their free time. He was interrupting Phoebe's opportunity to run amuck, and she took her amuck time very seriously. VERY SERIOUSLY. She'd be quite cross with the Professor, if it weren't for the fact that he had an endearingly grumpy face.
A thoughtful one, but a grumpy one.
"Hullo, Professor. I know what that is. My gran has one of those bowls," Phoebe gave Cece a sideways cuddle as she eased into her spot. "Hi, Cee. Want to run amuck later? Frolic in the wilderness, perhaps?"
Torin was torn between being excited to talk to the Professor and have one of his favourite classes start up again, and being disappointed that he doesn't get to spend his evening in the greenhouses doing his favourite thing. Attending to the plants there.
It was a beautiful, if not slightly chilly night to enjoy at the very least. He thought as he made his way down to the fenced in space they call a classroom. At least I get to relax my feet and sit on a hayba-
"I guess not then." He said as he took in the sight before him. The other students were gathered watching Professor Williamson as he stood over what looked to be..a pensive? He'd heard of them, but never actually seen one before. Growing more curious he walked closer to the center until he was just to the left of the Professor. "Sir, forgive me for interrupting your thoughts, but are we going to be using a pensive tonight?"

"Phoebe, phoebe!!" Kizzy was trailing RIGHT behind her older sister. "Phoebe!" Well, not right behind. She was a lot behind. A lot, alot behind. She was so behind that it was entirely unlikely that anyone could even guess that she was trying to follow Phoebe James at all.
And by the time she had reached Fifi and the rest of the group, Kiz was doing some hardcore, heavy breathing. For good reason though!! She had been trying to catch up with Phoebe the ENTIRE way to the grounds. In retrospect, it wasn't the best plan that Kinsay James had ever come up with. In fact, by the time that Fifi had reached her classmates, Kiz had only just made it ten steps away from the castle. That's why she had to run. To try to catch up (which she didn't).
And the issue with running full speed is that it is very hard to stop running full speed. Kinsay knew this because it happened to her a lot. It was called momentum. She knew that too.
When she did manage to stop though, it was right by Emmerson Cambridge. "Emm!" She greeted her bestie with a tight side-hug. Who was she talking t--
Oh.
Kinsay's eyes went wide as she stared up at the tall man, who was likely their professor. He was at the adult table during the feast. Kinsay didn't pay much attention to what was happening there because she was really tired, but she did see him. "Hi," she was a quiet Kiz this evening.

Evening classes were both a boon and the exact opposite. Carys fully expected the opposite of students falling asleep in class as she made her way out to the grounds for CoMC. Even before she saw what little there was to see of the designated area for the lesson, having forgone the idea of lighting her wand in case it would startle whatever creature they were going to be learning about. “Evening, Professor Williamson,” she said as she passed the professor on her way to a spot a few feet to his left.
The pensieve was an interesting addition, instead of a covered cage or whatever else they’d encountered as a hint toward the lesson subject. It made her wonder if they were going to learn about a creature that it was entirely too dangerous to actually encounter in real life. Even if that was likely more a subject for DADA instead, it was a possibility.

Minjae rummaged through his bag to see if his textbook was somewhere on the bottom but because this was the only evening class for the day there weren't any other books inside. At least he had his dragonhide gloves with him. If they were going to be having a practical lesson, the professor might never know what was happening...
Of course someone had to ruin it though. The Hufflepuff snapped his bag closed quickly and was about to send the girl an annoyed look when he realised that it was Aboli. "But he's at home..." he sighed half jokingly back. He did not have an assistant but he did have a driver who occasionally held his things for him. "And i tried that two years ago. No wanted to even when I offered money" another sigh. "I mean who wouldn't want to work for me? Im lovable!" he let out a laugh so hard he might have scared someone nearby.
Did he still have time to run back and grab his correct textbook? He didn't want to though...

Heath didn’t think much of the unusual lesson time, other than that it probably meant they were studying something nocturnal. The sunset, however… now that caught his attention! He looked up at the sky’s changing colors as he made his way down the path, only looking away long enough to make sure he didn’t crash into anyone. All too soon, it seemed, he arrived at the classroom area. He started to make his way to the nearest hay bale, only to see there were none there. Blink. Blink. Well, this was… different. Not that he was complaining; he didn’t mind standing.
“Hello, Professor,” he greeted. It was only as he did so that Heath noticed the stone bowl on the table. Hmm… was that what he thought it was? And if so, how did it relate to creatures? Was it a creature somehow related to memory? Or maybe it was something so dangerous that they could only learn about it by studying memories through a pensieve? Whatever the case, his curiosity was piqued! Still eyeing the pensieve (or the object he thought was one), he moved to stand with the others.

If there was anyone who knew how inept Josh could be with this particular subject it was Professor Williamson. Truth be told, the Gryffindor had been hoping to drop this particular subject after OWLs but pops had had another idea. More grooming, as always. Least he could say he had passed the exam even if his handling of fire crabs during his practical had nearly ended in disaster and a lack of eyebrows.
Just don't ask.
"Evening, professor," he greeted while squinting to try and make out the shapes of others and the usual blocks of hay so he didn't trip over them. Luckily for him the latter seemed to be absent today and he knew a few voices well enough to migrate in their general direction. The sunset was...really nice. Breathtaking even. He could write a song about those colors and he was soon padding his pockets to try and remember which of them he had slipped his little lyrics book inside now that he was modestly throwing caution to the wind about his no-longer-well-kept secret. His love for music had somewhat gone out the window once Gabrielle had found out anyway. It was fine. Cool. Cool cool cool.
"Hey Minjae, Aboli," he greeted his yearmates as he strolled to a stop beside them and pulled his dragonhide gloves from his pocket. "...what's that thing and why is he staring into it like Narcissus?"
Needless to say, Josh had never once seen a pensieve in his entire life. He had not exactly had a cultured upbringing, even in things that seemed standard to magical families.

Cole was not a big fan of night lessons, but what did you do when one of your favourite professors scheduled a lesson on an evening? You drank some warm herbal tea, pulled your robes closer against the slight evening fog and headed outside to the usual meeting spot. As Cole headed into the fenced in classroom he perked up and got more excited at the sight of his professor and was that a pensieve but no visible creature?
"Evening Professor W!" Cole greeted cheerfully, before he took up his place near the back of the gathered group next to Heath. One perk with growing a few more inches over the summer was that he could see over younger students heads if needed. Why did Professor W have a stone bowl full of water? Hopefully he hadn’t borrowed it from his auntie Laurel, or they could all be in for a nasty surprise.

A night lesson was intriguing to his young mind. There had to be a reason for his most favorite lesson to be taking place at night. Surely it meant that whatever creature they would get to meet during this lesson was a nighttime creature! Not that it could possibly mean anything else.
With a slight spring in his step, Lukas joined the small group that was gathering near Professor Williamson. Giving a small nod of his head to the man and a quiet, "Good evening, Professor," he stood quietly with his hands in the pockets of his robes.
What was the pensieve for? Why was Williamson staring down into it? Would THEY get to have a look too?! So many thoughts raced through his head as he waited for the start of the lesson.

Coby stifled a yawn as he joined the gathering was their first Creatures class of the term. Creatures wasn't his favourite subject - far from it, actually, the creatures could usually sense his stress and nothing good every came out of that - but Mum said he had to keep taking it because he needed a balanced, well rounded education.
To Coby, all that meant right was more homework and less free time.
Dropping his bag heavily to the floor, Coby blinked in surprised at the professor, and squinted slightly to bring his vision into focus. Was that a pensieve? It looked expensive. "Evening Professor," he greeted quietly, and waited for the lesson to begin. No creatures? Dare he get his hopes up for a theory lesson?

There were NOT too many kids here for Williamson to protect, for the record. There had been many a time in his first few years of teaching that a creature had popped out of the forest and into their lesson. One time they’d even levitated the fire crab, or so he recalled.
Williamson knew nothing about girls and tears and fears, so he was very, very relieved there were no traces of them on or near Abbie. Er, Aboli. Yes. Another new prefect. “Helllllllo,” he drawled in return, nodding in lieu of a wave. “Congratulations are in order for you too, I hear?” And see? He didn’t have his readers on because he was in denial about needing them but he was pretty sure he could see the Prefect badge on her robes reflecting the last bits of evening light.

“Hello, professor sir.” The eleven year old greeted cheerfully as she moved to the front, curiously wondering what the professor was looking at. “Hope you’re doing well today.. sir”
Was this another first year? Merlin, the years started coming and they just kept coming, didn’t they. “Hello, thanks,” he smiled at the Gryffindor. “Hope you’re well also? Er?” What was her name, then? Hogwarts really needed to make nametags for all the first years.

”Hey Naya,” Williamson made sure to greet another one of his great students, albeit a fairly quiet one. “Welcome back to Hogwarts.” Wasn’t she going to be graduating this year? They had a lot of NEWT-level material to cover before then! He checked his watch to see how much more time he had to allow for stragglers.

”Oh, does she?” Williamson looked up from the pensieve again, where his eyes were always drifting, as Phoebe James mentioned it directly. “This one belonged to my gran too.” He eyed her and Cece and subtly shook his head at the pair of ‘em. No, no no, girls. No frolicking or summoning spirits in the forest later… the things kids got up to these days, he’d never understand…

He guessed not what? Hmm? Williamson glanced up at the boy who spoke to him and smiled gently at him.
“You will, sort of.” He paused as his eyes were tempted to return to this particular memory. “You’ll find out what I mean soon enough.” And again he made that gentle shoo shoo motion so the boy would back up a bit more.

Well well well, another little ickle one with friends. Interesting. Williamson’s brown eys focused on the girl, to whom he just gave a curt nod. “Hi.” And, since he supposed he should be grateful they had kids returning to Hogwarts despite all the ~things~ that happened here, he added, “Welcome to Care of Magical Creatures?”
Was it a question that she was welcome or that he was teaching this class? He was too distracted by his pensieve to elaborate on that statement, as his gaze returned to watching a memory of a certain redheaded friend of his.

And Williamson did appreciate that she was not lighting her wand, more than she could know. "Good evening," he replied to one of the Rose sisters, the Hufflepuff one, he supposed. Her thoughts on what they'd be learning about? Maybe even correct.

”Hello,” Williamson returned the greeting, again not willing to tear his eyes away from his memories yet. See how dangerous these things were? This was why he’d only borrowed this one for this class. He’d have to make himself return it to his parents after this class… or maybe next weekend… or heck, it could wait a month. They had another one at home, didn’t they….?

”Evening,” Williamson replied lightly, just as his memory was ending. Right. He shouldn’t start another one, even though he already saw one of his favorites swirling through the bowl… no no. The boy was talking about the Malfoys, wasn’t he? Narcissa?
Williamson shook his head and promised himself to focus on the purpose of this class for the whole rest of the evening.

”Hey Cole,” Williamson returned the cheerful Gryffindor’s greeting. No, he hadn’t borrowed this old thing from anyone but own gran. They were all good here, at least until they went into the memory.

”Good evening,” the Creatures teacher returned Lukas’ reply lightly. The little Ravenclaw looked like he had grown some, didn’t he? Good for him.

Was this a transfer student, or just a Slytherin Willy didn’t recognize yet? Either way, he just nodded back to the boy in lieu of returning the wave, his hands loosely holding each other behind his back now as he waited for the last few stragglers to arrive.

Ah, the final student, or so he hoped. “Good evening... glad you made it,” he joked, particularly since the boy seemed to be the very last one to leave the castle. It wasn’t because he hated this class, was it? Ah well. Williamson had told himself a very long time ago not to take any of the students’ feelings on his subject personally.
And then it was time to begin. With his hands behind his back and a serious expression on his face, Williamson looked out at everyone gathered there, and let out a soft sigh.
"Welcome back. I'm hoping for a good term this year, where we will hopefully face some interesting creatures together and LEARN from them." He nodded again to himself. "So, on that topic, what do we need to keep in mind and at hand when working with dangerous creatures, particularly those rated XXXX and XXXXX on the Ministry scale? Feel free to build off each other's answers as you reply."
And hopefully they'd start a good conversation about those ratings, some of which were... well, unwarranted, in his professional opinion.

"Thanks," Kinsay replied softly, looking from their professor over to the pensieve. She knew what it was, but found it to be a little disappointing. If he had his pensieve did that mean they weren't going to see REAL creatures today and only see memory ones? Because memory ones weren't as neat, you couldn't touch them. Not that Kinsay knew because she hadn't ever used a pensieve before. She just imagined that they wouldn't be as neat.
Kiz actually wanted to ask about it, but before she had the opportunity, class began. Oh man. And there was a question, one that Kinsay didn't know too much about. But she could make a good guess because she knew that the more dangerous the creature, the more X's. And XXXXX were a lot of X's.
So she quietly raised her hand, "Be careful and do not hug them, especially if they look angry because they might try to eat you and then you'll die." She was still a little tired from running to class. Could they take a quick nap?
