A bit confused about the plot? Housemates talking about a mysterious something going bump in the night? Here's where YOU can post and catch up on happenings around the castle and in Hogsmeade -- out of character, of course.
This means that unless your student character heard this stuff from other students or witnessed the actual event, your student character doesn't know about it.
Also, this is a reminder to everyone to only post updates on the school plot here. Please do not post the happenings of your student character in here unless it is related to the plot; that should go in the Wizarding World chat thread.

Meanwhile, he would handle....the double team that was Gabi and Gus. The man did his best to keep the amused smirk from his face. The snaps weren't that bad yet. It'd barely been a week. "We don't throw democracy out the door over a few snaps." But he would like to give his own take on this bet. Malachi looked toward the students, considering for a moment before finally offering up, "None of them." Okay, maybe one or two, but for the most part, none. "Hogwarts is full of magic, including the magic to make the students forget common sense the moment they arrive." He dared anyone to argue that, especially in the last few terms, consecutively.
It was Cassie's further enthusiasm that had Malachi looking to the students again and that's when he noticed Piers...and....cruppies...?
The feast hardly seemed the place to take pets but he assumed there was some method behind that so the look he received was returned with nothing more than a raise of the Headmaster's brow. He supposed they'd talk about it later.
For now, with the last of the sorting over, Malachi rose to his feet and tapped at his goblet. Attention attention, yes attention. The Headmaster waited for them to settle before continuing.
"Good evening and welcome or welcome back to another magical year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. To our First Years and transfers, congratulations on your new houses. I trust the rain hasn't put a damper on your spirits. I wanna believe this will be a good year, so let me start by imploring you all to act like you've got some sense. You know what's expected, fail to act accordingly and the Hogwarts Express is on standby to take you back to London. This is a school. Surprise, surprise, schools have rules and consequences for breaking those rules. I won't put up with further folly." As fair a warning as the "avoid the forest" one he gave at the start of every feast. In the last two or so terms, the behaviour of some students had gone down the well and drowned. It was time they went back to acting like the students he knew they could be.
"And, y'know, while we're already on the subject of don'ts--I didn't wanna start negative, this isn't me, I'm not this person, but some of you have made it a necessity at this point. Let's do some quick recap, to get everyone up to speed. The forest near the end of the grounds is called the Forbidden Forest. Want to know what happens if you ignore the implications of that name? I've got a Slytherin and a Gryffindor who can answer that for you, if the acromantulas don't first." Wait. "That might be too vague so let me come right out and say it. Stay OUT of that forest. Consider this the first and last warning to all." Everyone was present. Everyone received instructions. Now he would wait to see who truly thought themselves above the law.
"On a lighter note, let's welcome our new Professors. From right to left, our new Astronomy Professor, Jane Cravit. Taking on Care of Magical Creatures, Professor William Williamson. Filling the role of Divination, Professor Cassiopeia Kitridge." He paused for appropriate applause.
"Classes start tomorrow at 8. I don't recommend staying up too late. Fuller-Thompson can tell you what happens to those who show up late to my class. I don't recommend finding out for yourself. Merlin, it's been nothing but warnings, hasn't it? It's hardly any way to start the school year. Join a club, try something new, make new friends and improve your grades. The possibilities are near endless and there are plenty of ways to gainfully occupy your time. Let's have a good one, yeah? Let's eat!"
Malachi gave a clap of his hands before sinking back into his chair. Right on cue, the food arrived. Rather than dig in, he looked to his colleagues again. "I'm accepting volunteers for detention chaperoning. We all know we'll need some." He wasn't, for a second, holding his breath.

The Great Hall...is already filled with students, students you've never seen before. In fact, at some points you can barely see them as they fade in and out in like fashion to muggle holograms.
They pay you no mind, no matter what you do, chattering on about their morning. If you try to touch them, you find yourself going right through them.

The woman (Cassie) is in for a bit of a fright as the seat she occupies becomes filled with another figure who reaches buy her to grab at his own meal.

Too bad. Before anyone can get to the gates there is a massive, bright flash of light so bright that you're forced to cover your eyes. A roll of thunder can be heard, as if someone with a large drum is stood next to you. It echoes into the mountains, a hollow and ominous sound.
And then nothing.
Nothing at all. Everything beyond the front gate vanishes, or perhaps you're the ones who are gone. Anyone who attempts a spot of magic will find that...nothing works.....
Oh dear. Best get comfy, it looks like no one is going home.

The ghost floated among the confused but solid students, figuring they must be seeing what he was seeing. "Have you all been acquainted?" He asked, not trying to hide his delight. He reached out to ruffle the hair of one boy, small of frame, a first year....perhaps? "Young Charlie, how's the quidditch coming along?"
Wait...Charlie had graduated.....
Agatha had graduated....
Thomas had most certainly graduated, in fact he remembered seeing an article about the lad's death. Horrible business that had been. He'd been in this very hall when the news came. "What are you doing here?" This time, he sounded more confused than thrilled. Nicholas turned to the solid students, waiting for an explanation. He had....a sinking feeling he knew what was happening.....and was hoping it wasn't the case.

Nearly Headless Nick spun to face here.
"Of course. I do think I may need to have a word with a few of my companions. Come find me when you're through with your meal."
He turned to the pair of Slytherins again. "If they do return, would you be so kind as to tell Alfred he's left his book over in the library? He was sitting on the end there." He pointed to a now empty spot, trusting they'd oblige before sinking back through the floor.

There is still nothing visible from beyond the gates, but there is also no visible damage from the earlier incoming storm. Interesting. It is as thought the storm was never actually there at all.

This post is largely done because these are small details that impact the wider RP but are not actual plot points or instances that need to be set. Similarly, there are so many that it is more realistic to pass this information on. Keep an eye here so you always know what's next and get a feel for the castle climate!
For now:
As magic no longer works, magical items cannot work. (This is a given as they would need magic in order to work). This includes but is not limited to: two-way mirrors, brooms, potions that are bound with spells, magical gadgets like sneakoscopes and the like, the Room of Requirements. If you are unsure, feel free to nudge a member of staff and they can clarify!
On the note of magic, anything built into the castle is still fighting to retain its magic. That means that the magic embedded in the very stones of Hogwarts are still there but very wonky. As a result, common rooms may: not open no matter how correct the password is, open and be unable to close or operate normally. You have liberty to decide which your character faces but the entrances will go through all these phases sporadically and without warning. In this vein, the portrait to the kitchen has been opened and left open to prevent if from closing up for good without warning. The RoR is particularly unstable and no longer appears when summoned or may appear but the door is unable to be opened. This means that whether the door appears or not, it cannot be accessed.
There is nothing in or out of the castle. This goes for owls particularly. The ones on the outside cannot find Hogwarts and the ones inside will not attempt to fly off the grounds into the abyss. This means presents, packages, newspapers, letters and the like cannot be delivered or sent off. This also means fireplaces, floo networks, vanishing cabinets and the like are also a no go.
Are you forgetting something? Short term memory loss is slowly creeping in. DID you finish your Herbology homework? Was your DADA class before or after lunch? Who did you lend your quill to?
Occasionally your students may find themselves sharing a space with translucent students who pay them no mind and seem to be on their own time. They may wake up to find someone else sleeping in their bed. Sit on a chair and find someone come to sit there, too, etc. You also have creative freedom to decide when a random "ghost" student appears but do remember, they cannot see your students, you cannot hear them and they go on with business as usual.
For those wondering, this is the scope of the storm. Anything outside the shaded area is not accessible. Secret passages out of the castle will end wherever the vortex ends, essentially making them dead ends that we don't recommend your students trying to go through.
House elf magic will also be highly unpredictable and wonky, making several chores a bit more difficult unless they get just the right moment.

While there is a storm, the outside does not resemble a storm. The sky is simply it's "normal" shade of red.
Memory loss is becoming a bigger problem. No, really, DID you do that homework?

In the new normal that settles over the entire castle, the strangest thing happens.
"Hello....?"
A voice calls out, distance, faint, but there. "Helloooo?" The voice grows louder, beckoning you from somewhere else. It sends a shiver up your spine, an intuitive knowledge that the voice is not meant to be there. It is not a voice you've ever heard before, but the call grows more urgent.
"Can you hear me...?"
Out in the corridor maybe?

"Hello?" It beckoned again. "Hello? Follow my voice." Wherever it was coming from, it sounded as if it was moving further away. There was no mistaking it. It was a call to come along.
"Can you hear me?"
The voice echoed down the corridor, calling to anyone who might be out here as well. Where was it coming from?

“Come find me!”

He just then heard the voice again wondering if he was coming to find her/him? "Isobel is that you?" Cole questioned, irritation seeping into his voice and a little bit of fear. He looked back to ensure the others had kept up, hoping they’d managed to get more people along the way while praying that theirs numbers would be enough otherwise.
“ThisBREATHE“This is it. Everyone—everyone wands out.”BREEEATHE. “What did you say that spell was?” He asked the weatherman.
Before this trembling got worse would be nice.

What spell?
Oh, yes. His book. He had it written down... somewhere.... in... he—
Ah!
"Tempore tempestatis fixus!" He called back in reply.

The spell had worked.

Tonight was the first time he'd seen any difference. He suspected once the kids were off in the morning, he'd be able to finally get the rest of it done. For now, Malachi had to pull himself away to get to the feast.
Trent moved up to the dais, muttering his apology for being late then settled into his seat. He'd kept them waiting long enough, he supposed, so the man did his usual tapping of his goblet to gain everyone's attention. It....felt great being able to cast a simple sonorus. It was the little spells you missed the most.
"Good evening everyone. I never thought I'd mean it so much when I say it's good to see all your faces." There was a time when he thought he never would again. Much as he didn't like some of them, there were none he ever wanted to disappear. It was too permanent a situation for such a temporary problem.
"It's been a rough term. Really rough, but like before, we've pulled through and I'd like to think we're a little stronger for it. I don't mean to turn this into a lecture. I know you're all probably hungry and eager to get off to bed to start your summer in the morning--but this bears saying. In these situations, we learn our strength. We learn just how well we can persevere. For those of you graduating, I'd especially like you to remember this. Outside, in the real world, you won't suddenly be out of the woods, not unless you go live among the muggles. Magic is everywhere and as we've seen, magic will always attract magic. I say this to remind you of all you've already conquered. I have nothing but faith in your," Most of them anyway, "continued success. For those of you returning come September, to you I say remember you will conquer again. Whatever may come, we and Hogwarts, will continue to endure."
"Special congratulations are in order for Gryffindor House, the winners of this year's house cup. All in all, the lot of you weren't as bad this year. I'll admit that." In the face of death, it turned out Slytherin was the one to worry about. You learned something new everyday.
"While I have your attention, before you all go off--some of you for the last time--I'd like to juuuuust for a second preach a little thing called "common sense"." You know, that thing a lot of them had been lacking this term. "All it takes is an extra few minutes to thinkbefore you act. What will happen if I do this? How will this help? What could go wrong? Am I prepared to fix whatever goes wrong? Do I need help? Do I need discretion? Consider all these things. They could save your lives."
There. It had to be said. "Now then, I don't think we need to wait any longer. Let's eat!"
Malachi settled back into his seat as the food began to appear. His stomach grumbled. Merlin, he was hungrier than he thought.
