Default Kitchen

Once you've tickled the pear and turned the knob, the Hogwarts kitchen will be revealed to you. Located directly beneath the Great Hall, the kitchen is a high-ceilinged room with five identical tables to the ones in the dining room above. Unlike the room situated above however, heaped around the walls are large quantities of pots and pans. On one end of the room are shelves of plates and utensils, stoves, sinks, and a large brick fireplace.

Here numerous house-elves are working on the castle's next meal when they aren't tending to their other duties as employees of the school. The team of house-elves have specific assignments to accomplish inside the kitchen, whether it is to cook, wash the plates and cutlery, keep the pantry stocked, place more wood into the fire, or set the tables before everything is summoned to its exact replicas overhead. Though the house-elves are incredibly busy, they will surely serve you a snack ... if you aren't asking Algamus. Or you can, of course, make your own food. Just don't leave a mess behind!

OOC: Please do not role-play for the House-Elves.

"Yes there's a house elf named Bidet." Not. How many names could she make up before Bernie would question it. "There's one named Elmo too."

Juliette did a little bow at the applause. That's what one did when addressing the adoring public... even if it was just one housemate... except what was up with the snaps? She snapped as well. Juliette wasn't aware they were suddenly at some poetry reading or whatever. Bernie was just... weird and Juliette was quite into weird. "Your neighbors get evicted?" Juliette wondered what that was like. "No, my mum hires people to like... decorate and stuff... and she lets me pick colours." Who gets furniture from the dumpster?! Was her furniture at home from the dumpster? She seriously hoped not cause that would be gross.

Oof. The house elf was pulling at her ears. That wasn't a good sign was it? Beezley the house elf was quite cute. She wondered what Beezley liked to eat... was it chocolate cake with jelly slugs?

"thisissocool..." Juliette whispered.

"Can you write on the cake 'Juliette & Bernie are totes awesometastical'?" she asked the house elf. Eating a cake that said that would be so cool. "Oh... and thank you for making us the cake." MANNERS.

A house elf was a very useful ally. They could make snacks when they needed to study... make snacks when they were bored... and make snacks.

Beezley had gotten all the ingredients and was begging to work when one of the students asked about the writing she looked up at the students and nodded, "Yes, Beezley can write that, Beezley will get on that right now." She snapped her fingers to get the ingredients to start mixing, but the ingredients didn't move, the bowl was just sitting. She pulled at her ears and looked around.

"Beezley is sorry, this never happens. Beezley will do better." She snapped again and still nothing happened. "Noooo, Beezley is failing, Beezley isn't making it right." She was getting upset and started to bang her head.

Bernie just couldn't believe all these house elf names! How come she hadn't encountered Bidet before, or Elm---

"Hang on, that one's fake," she pointed to Juliette but cracked a big grin. "Elmo isn't a house elf, he's a little red monster on that Muggle show." You know, the one where the puppets all lived on the streets of America? It was very old but apparently still on TV, though it was one of those channels only her brother paid for and he only watched the shows with the aDuLT cOnTeNt. Boo to him. And boo to Juliette, too, for ALMOST tricking Bernie. (She was, however, possibly convinced that an elf named Bidet was real.)

Yeah, evictions happened ALL the TIME in Bernie's building. She nodded and stared at Juliette, wondering how much it cost to pay someone to decorate your house for you. "That's kind of amazing..." she admitted, just a little bit jealous of this frivolous spending. Bernie's room at home was currently yellow, her sister's favorite color, because they had to share it and she'd won the coin toss the last time they'd painted. But it was fine, Bernie liked living at Hogwarts most of the time anyway, and didn't care that much about decorating.

The cake, though, she would love to see that decorated in sugar and sprinkles and fancy letters. Bernie turned her attention to Miss Beezley, beaming at the elf as she pulled over a nearby stool and settled in to watch her baking. "Thank you, Miss Beezley," she chirped too, already impressed just by the house elf's promise to write all those words on the cake. Bernie had to see this!

But why... why was the elf's magic not working? She frowned and looked at Juliette, like she might know what was up, and then glanced back to the elf as she began to bang her head.

"Nooooooo, stop!" Bernie leapt off her stool and reached out a hand to help the elf. Was she allowed to touch her, or would that scare her away?! "Please, don't hurt yourself! It's just a cake!!!"

It was a fake but Juliette was going to keep lying until Bernie believed her. "No, there's one named after the little red monster. Because they have the same... eyes," Juliette lied. She hoped she sounded convincing. She only knew of it because of the show that her uncle put on for her and Evie to watch when they were little kids. "I think there's one named Babar too." Lie.

Eviction. So weird. Juliette wondered who did the evictions... and if she could be in charge of them one day. It sounded like it could be fun minus the people crying over losing the- yeah, maybe evictions weren't something she'd be comfortable doing. "It's only fun sometimes... if they take a long time to do the renovations I get to sleep over at my aunt & uncle's house so that's fun..." Juliette just came up with a brilliant idea. "Oh! You should come visit some time! We have a lot of creatures but other than that, you could totally come visit me and my mum and our house elf and we could break some stuff and choose things to replace it with!" Juliette had only broken one lamp once because she had hated it... and unfairly blamed it on the crup. But she got to pick an awesometastical one afterwards so it was worth it.

"Beezley, you are quite simply the best!" Juliette beamed. It definitely had to be a big cake to fit all the words. Bernie and her probably wouldn't need to eat dinner afterwards. Or they'd get a giant stomachache but they could roll the dice and find out later. She was just as excited as Bernie and followed suit, grabbing a stool as well. And hearing a finger snap meant that the magic of cooking was under w-

What?

She looked right back at Bernie, matching the frown and gave a slight shrug of her shoulders. She hadn't sat down in her stool yet when she saw the poor house elf start banging her head.

"Bernie... what's going on?" she asked quietly, eyes wide at the elf as Bernie tried to console her. And though she really had wanted the cake, she didn't want the house elf to bang her poor head over it. "Beezley," Juliette started, feeling sad over the loss of cake and the terrible sight before her, "It's just a cake... we don't really want that anyways..." she lied. Maybe if they said they didn't want it anymore then Beezley would stop and get some rest. Did house elf magic have a limit? Maybe Beezley had been working too hard. "And if you keep banging your head, you're going to make us both very upset and cry."

Was that going to work? Juliette found threatening to cry worked against some adults... she wasn't sure if it would work against a house elf since Poppy never made her cry before.

Hmm, okay, one named Elmo now sounded plausible, but, "How many house elves ARE there at Hogwarts?!" Bernie had to say it, nice and loud too, in case Beezley knew the answer. "I can't believe you've met all the ones I HAVEN'T met!" For real! What were the chances! One would think the same elf cleaned all of Gryffindor tower, but maybe not!

Her blue eyes lit up at the prospect of visiting her housemate sometime. "That sounds AMAZZZZZING!" Bernie practically sang. "No wait," what was the word Juliette had used earlier?! "AWESOMETASTICAL!" Yaaaaaaah, yeah awesometastical!!!! She couldn't wait for summer now. "I'd love to!" Please let her come, for real for real, please!

She was definitely beaming too, you know, until Beezley started to lose her magic. This was not good! NOT GOOD! "I dunno, I dunno, maybe she should try snapping again," she looked up at Juliette, nodding along to her threat about possibly crying. It WAS a good threat. Bernie had used it many times, especially on Professor Schmoe. "Yeah, what she said," she reiterated. "Please, just... forget us! We don't need ANYTHING. Unless you have pre-made snacks lying around."

Ahem. Just an idea.

Bagging her head the little elf only stopped when she heard the students say it would upset them if she kept doing it. Looking up at them with sad eyes she pulled at her ears, "Beezley wants to make a cake for the misses, Beezley likes to make students happy. Beezley doesn't know why her fingers aren't working." The house elf snapped her fingers again and still nothing worked.

"Beezley thinks there is ice cream." With that the little elf took off to see if she could find any only coming back with exactly what she was looking for. "Beezley found some ice cream misses."

"Well, Hogwarts is a big castle. You can't expect just 5 elves to do all the work," she said with a slight shrug of her shoulders. Five house elves probably could do everything... Juliette found they had an incredible work ethic. But if she was going to make up names, she was going to have to stick with her lies. "Mum always says I have to make my bed though, just so that the house elves have one less thing to worry about." Even though the house elf probably wouldn't mind... but she supposed there was a point.

Bernie being excited to visit made Juliette excited. The usage of the word awesometastical gave her extra points. "Great! Then it's settled! You'll come visit, we'll break things and play with crups!" Even though summer was a long time away, Juliette was already planning the perfect sleepover with someone other than Evie & Pete. Not that she minded them but a change in company was good every once in a while.

She was so relieved to see that the cute little elf had stopped banging her head and audibly let out a little breath she hadn't realized she had been holding. Juliette nodded along to EVERYTHING that Bernie was saying. They needed a united front. "Maybe you're working too hard, Miss Beezley, and you need a little rest." Them house elves worked HAAAAARRRRD.

"Ice cream is perfect. Absolutely perfect. We love ice cream!" Juliette replied with a round of applause for the house elf. Did Bernie eat ice cream? Actually what kind of question was that? Of course she did. Everyone eats ice cream. When the house elf had come back, she was tempted to hug her but refrained. "Thank you!!!!"

If you stacked the ice cream in molds, it was kinda an ice cream cake. Wasn't it?

Well that was true!! Bernie tapped her chin. "Oh, what's your home house elf named?" She wondered if her parents, even though they were total Muggles, would be open to the idea of a house elf? What if she brought one home from school over the summer? Could she convince one of the Hogwarts elves to come with her? There was definitely less work at their flat... so maybe, if like a lazy house elf existed, it could come with her...?

Hmmmmm. Bernie ought to write this idea down before she forgot it.

YAAAAAAAAY, cruppies! "OKAY!" Bernie shouted again with a small hop of excitement!! Breaking things sounded so fun too!!!!!! Why was everything exciting!!!!!!

Even the house elf's magic not working was still pretty exciting. "It's okay, Miss Beezley, we're happy just to see you!" Well, this was mostly true. Bernie was a BIG FAN of elves, so just talking to one kinda made her day, as long as she got at least one small sugary snack too. "I agree with Juliette. You can probably take a nap now. It's not dinner time yet or anything."

She beamed as her NEWFOUND FRIEND thanked the elf and everything. AND Beezley was so fast at getting them ice cream! "Wow!" Bernie leaned over to look at their options. "What kind do ya have here, Beezley?" Could Bernie have it on a cone, please, or would that be too demanding? She looked at Juliette to see what flavor SHE was gonna get.

Default slow replies... while eating ice cream :D

"Poppy," Juliette said proudly. She loved the cute little house elf at home too. Poppy always helped her clean up and hide messes before her mum got home. "She does everything at home. She's the bestest." Juliette felt a little homesick talking about Poppy and missing the delicious breakfasts Poppy would make each morning. Her mum had tried once to be more motherly, but it was definitely more on the toasty and inedible side. "Do you have one? Are you thinking about getting one?!" Juliette asked excitedly. Their house elves could have play dates or something. Whatever it was that house elves did in their spare time.

She'd have to owl her mum later to get things sorted for her new friend. She was sure there wouldn't be any issues but figured it would probably be best to give some sort of heads up rather than having Bernie show up one summer day at the front door. Juliette would need to remember to do that later.

Juliette kept nodding along with Bernie. Yes. They were super happy. There was ice cream so honestly, who could be upset? "Yeah! We'll get you a pillow next time!" Juliette was totally okay with stealing a dorm mate's pillow for Beezley.

"I want chocolate ice cream," Juliette said with a grin. She could just put jelly slugs in it and bam - close enough. [b]"What about you?"[b] Choosing ice cream flavors was very important. What if Bernie's favorite ice cream was something gross like... earwax or something? Terrible. They'd have to end their friendship and it had only just started.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Not very long after her encounter with Blake at the Library, and taking her second photo of Newt, Claudine made her way to the kitchen. It was close to the Hufflepuff Common Room and she had an inkling that the real Newt would come here often to learn about the House Elves. Therefore he would be taking full advantage of the closeness between the kitchen and Common Room.

Finding a spot where she wouldn't be a hinderance to the Elves, the girl propped flat Newt on the end of the table she had selected. Looking over the setting, she wasn't quite satisfied for she wanted a better background. Newt was shifted around at various angles until Claudine found an angle she liked: quite a few elves behind him along with utensils and assorted food items.

"Perfect,'' she thought and quickly snapped the picture before all the elves decided to move along. With the last of her three pictures for the assignment taken, the Snakette sat down to write her few lines:

SPOILER!!: Click!

Newt was no doubt a huge fan of House elves. For one thing, they were friendly and for another, they were great cooks. Newt liked to spend his time doing homework in the Kitchen. He would also spend his time befriending the elves and learning about their ways. He may have also tried to get a recipe or two out of them.

"Poppy!" AWW, Bernie LOVED that name for an elf! "That's such a lovely name," she cheered. "I wish I had an elf." She shook her head sadly at her friend. "My whole family's Muggles. I don't think we would be allowed one in our flat." But maybe she could come see Juliette's elf, since it sounded so precious and sweet and just THE BEST THING (being?!) EVER.

She nodded too, there was lots of enthusiastic nodding from these two as they reassured Beezley. Oh, if Juliette was getting chocolate, should SHE get chocolate too? "I'll also have chocolate. And mint chocolate chip. One of each, if you please, Miss Beezley." Not that she was comfortable bossing around the elf, but she really really did want to see her work her magic again (if it'd cooperate) and give her some ice cream.

The cold still had Claudine feeling off but she was quite reluctant to visit Healer Ricci. Why? Because she was not looking forward to taking the Pepper Up potion. Since her memory was failing, she had re-read on the potion after taking a quick bath since CoMC had been quite the lesson and there had been mud everywhere. She felt her best course of action would be a heaping bowl of steaming soup with a lot of veggies and maybe some chicken. That was a lot better than the after effects of a Pepper Up potion.

It was her intention to make herself the soup but when she got to the kitchen, she suddenly felt tired; her throat felt icky and hurt every time she swallowed. Claudine made her way to a quiet part of the kitchen, to one of those tables that students were welcome to use to make their own food. There was a chair nearby and she dragged it to the table, took a seat and promptly put her arms on the table {one on top of the other} then rested her forehead on the top arm. Her dark hair was tied in a ponytail which now hung over one shoulder.

It was safe to say she was feeling miserable.

Ugh! Heath thought he would never get clean after that disaster of a COMC lesson! Having finally washed and changed into his usual non-uniform outfit (dark shirt, jeans, and his trademark Star Wars jacket), he found himself with some free time on his hands. He'd originally planned to lose himself in a good book, but he suddenly remembered there was something he was supposed to do in the kitchen. What was it?

Upon entering the kitchen, Heath spotted a familiar figure that jogged his memory. Claudine's cold… that's why he was here! He was going to make her some chicken soup and ask one of the house elves to take it to her without her knowing who sent it, but he hadn't expected to run into her in the process. Now there was no way to do this without her noticing, and if she knew, she might guess his deepest secret! Maybe he should just go…

He started to turn away, but something about the way she rested her head on her arms had him concerned. Was she asleep? He didn't want to disturb her, but he couldn't leave unless he knew she was okay. He'd already made that mistake once today! "Claudine?" he whispered, standing beside her chair. "Are you alright?"

Claudine was, in fact, halfway into a blissful sleep. The voice speaking to hear seemed to be a part of a dream that involved President the kneazle capable of human speech and was now prodding her with a paw and asking if she was alright because she hadn’t arrived at the Sanctuary to feed him as well as the other animals she cared for on time. Professor Willis would kill her or worse, revoke his permission for her to intern for him. The thought startled out of her reverie and she suddenly sat up, her heart pounding as though she had run for miles.

Where was she? What was wrong with her throat? Why did she feel so off? She blinked once, twice. Oh, right. She was in the kitchen and she had a cold and was here to make some so- Claudine swung her gaze to her side when she became aware of someone there. “Hi.’’ Claudine croaked out at Heats, her throat all dry and scratchy. She looked up at him, her expression as miserable as she felt. “You might want to step back. I think my cold has gotten a little worse.” The girl was even too unwell to make the soup she had wanted to. Should she even ask a house elf and be a bother?

Heath watched as Claudine sat up, inwardly berating himself for starling her. She looked and sounded so much worse than the last time he saw her! Seeing her so miserable felt like his heart was being zapped with Force lightning, and without his usual veil of dark hair, all the sadness and concern in his eyes were on full display. "Sorry! I didn't mean to scare you," he said softly.

Claudine's words got a head shake from him. "I'm afraid you're stuck with me," he replied. If he got sick, he could deal with it, but he was not leaving her. Not again! Oh dear Merlin, he should've never left her side in COMC! He should've offered to escort her to Healer Rook the moment Professor W gave her permission to go. He should've insisted on doing it after class and just let her argue about it as much as she wanted. The only reason he didn't was that he didn't think she'd want him anywhere near her looking as dirty as he did!

Heath leaned against the table, looking around the room for something to distract himself from his emotions. He saw the pots and pans against the wall and suddenly remembered something. "My granny used to make the best chicken soup," he mused out loud, surprising himself. Why in the galaxy was he talking about this? He hardly ever mentioned his family to anyone, especially not now, but for once, it wasn't a bad reminder of the life he'd probably never get back. "She'd make it every time I got sick. Granted, it's not as effective as pepperup potion, but it tasted a lot better."

Was he rambling? Probably. He looked back at Claudine, nervously running a hand through his hair. "If you like, I could try to make you some," he offered. What he neglected to mention was that that had been his intention all along!

Claudine was too drained to even begin to try to figure out what emotions Heath was feeling. She did notice though, that he had his eyes on full display again which was weird as he usually kept them hidden by his hair. She remembered that much. “No, it wasn’t you. Just… a very weird dream.’’ Though it would be nice if President could communicate via human speech. Claudine blinked up at Heats. “You’re awfully stubborn, aren’t you?’’ Despite her telling him to leave, she was relieved for his presence. Some would want their mothers but she didn’t have one, and at this point, she didn’t really remember much of her extended family so a friend would have to do.

Chicken soup? That’s right! It was the intention of making herself some of that soup that had brought her here. “That’s actually what I would like to eat. Piping chicken soup.’’ The Slytherin took a swipe at her nose with tissue. “Anything’s better than the Pepper Up potion at this point. Are you sure you want to make me some of your Grandma’s special recipe, Heats?’’ She had to be sure because she was not going to make him go out of his way to help her. This girl was more of the strong, independent type who didn’t need no man.

She certainly did not feel this way at the time.

She certainly did not feel this way at the time.
Heath was dying to know what exactly that weird dream was - must be the Ravenclaw curiosity in him - but he didn't ask. Poor Claudine already sounded so terrible! The last thing he wanted was to make it worse, so he wouldn't make her talk any more than was absolutely necessary.

Try as he might to stifle it, a slight chuckle escaped him at Claudine's next words. He quickly shot her an apologetic look to show that he wasn't laughing at her, just in case she didn't remember that he would never do that. It was just funny because his family told him the same thing all the time, but he didn't see it. If anything, he thought the opposite. Usually he'd go along with whatever others wanted in a desperate bid for approval. "Only about the important things," he replied. Like taking care of a sick friend.

Heath half-expected Claudine to put up more of a fight against his offer. He blinked, unsure whether to feel relieved or even more worried. He didn't want to argue with one of his only friends, but the fact that Claudine was allowing him to help her showed just how sick she was. This wasn't like her! She was strong, and she had a mind of her own. That was what he liked about her! He was so conflicted that he didn't hear her call him the wrong name, and if he did, he wouldn't have cared. She could call him by any name she wanted, as long as she called him her friend.

Heath nodded, smiling slightly. "Of course I want to," he said. The problem was he'd never made Granny Jones's chicken soup on his own before! He'd watched her make it countless times. He'd helped her add and stir things, but that was the extent of his cooking skills. Not only that, but he was having trouble recalling the ingredients. There was chicken (obviously!) and a broth base for the soup and… some kind of noodles. What were the flat, sort of wavy noodles called? Oh, egg noodles! Hmm… what else? There were some veggies in there too, carrots and… something else. Celery, maybe?

Heath looked back at Claudine as he bustled about, gathering supplies. "I have no idea how long this'll take," he said. "Would you like something warm to drink while you wait?"

Ah, so Heats could be stubborn about important things. Wait. Did this mean that she was important to him? Her own question confused her since the last thing she’d ever expected was to be important to anyone, with the exception of family members. Maybe she was just being silly and was being messed with by the cold. Yes, that must be it. The cold was meddling with her thoughts. “Okay, if you’re sure,’’ she replied, still a little puzzled and a lot guilty to have him doing this for her. Claudine tried to remind herself that Heats had volunteered for the task.

Claudine put her elbows on the table and tucked her hands under her chin so that she could acceptably sit up and watch the Ravenclaw do his work. “Hmm…” Did she want anything else? Her thoughts turned to Espresso Patronum’s caramelatte. Theirs were her favourite latte and she wished she could have a cup now. “Not unless you can Apparate to Espresso Patronum and get me a caramelatte.” Claudine smiled weakly. “I’ll wait until you’re finished to have anything.’’ Which reminded her of something, since they had the free time. “Why is it that most times your hair hides your eyes?” This was something the Snakette had been wondering for some period back but it always slipped her mind to ask.

Heath was already so busy chopping vegetables that he nearly missed Claudine's words. He looked up, giving her a slight smile as confirmation that he was sure. So did he add everything to the pot at the same time or…? He struggled to recall how his grandmother did it. No, she cooked the veggies in butter first, then added the other stuff… he thought. Jumping jawas, this was harder than he thought! He should've gone to the library to check out a cookbook first! Were there any cookbooks here? He looked, but he didn't see any. Of course not… why would the house elves need cookbooks?

So that was a no to the warm beverage then? "No such luck," Heath said, laughing. "But my sister could probably do it… if magic still worked and there wasn't an Anti-Disapparition Jinx on the school." What an awkward conversation that would be! 'Hey, Ariel! Can you apparate to Espresso Patronum and buy my friend a…' What was that drink called? He'd already forgotten! "Okay, tell me if you should change your mind." But he doubted she would. Claudine didn't strike him as the mind changing type!

Heath was about to turn on the stove when Claudine asked that question. “WHAT?!” he blurted out before he could stop himself, gaping at her in shock. His mind raced. How in the galaxy was he supposed to answer that? For a moment, he thought to play it off as a force of habit, something he did without realizing it until she pointed it out, but he knew that wouldn't work. Claudine was too smart to fall for that, and he couldn't bring himself to lie to her.

His eyes darted nervously about the kitchen. He could trust Claudine and the house elves not to blab what they were about to hear, but someone else could barge in at any moment! "Okay, I'll tell you." He sighed, leaving the stove to stand near Claudine. This was not a conversation he wanted to have while shouting across the kitchen to each other!

"It's so people don't guess what I'm feeling," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "No matter how stoic I act, my eyes give me away - or so everyone's always told me. No one can use my emotions against me if they don't know what they are." His expression darkened, and there was a slight bitter edge to his voice as he said the last sentence. His thoughts turned to the many bullies from muggle school who had done exactly that, but he left that part out for now. Claudine already had a cold; she didn't need to deal with his past trauma on top of that!

It was much comfortable watching Heathen work with her head resting on her hands. Claudine still felt guilty about letting him cook for her though. She wasn’t really used to letting anyone do stuff for her unless she really required help or unless you happened to be a Hogwarts House Elf. As she watched her friend work, she couldn't help but wonder if he had done this before; he seemed to be a pro at this. As conversation turned to their situation at Hogwarts, Claudine was surprised to find the Ravenclaw laughing. She wasn’t usually funny, you know. The girl started to bob her head then remembered that he was preoccupied and probably wouldn’t see her. “It sucks about the magic. I miss having it to help me everyday.’’ It was the first time she had admitted this out aloud.

Maybe a very big mistake had been made on her part by asking that question. Claudine hadn’t thought it would have been that big of a deal but as she watched Heathen’s reaction, it was quite obvious she had been wrong. She had made him uncomfortable and she regretted it. The girl had only opened her mouth to tell him not to worry, that she didn’t need an answer when he apparently made up his mind that he’d tell her the reason.

Claudine closed her mouth and stared at Heathen’s forehead as he came near. He was speaking so quietly, she had to lean towards him a bit to catch what was being said. Oh. She was silent for a moment after the words, processing them. “That explains a lot. I’m not sure if I would have noticed it until recently because of the memory issues. And... I'm very sorry you've had your emotions used against you.’’ Indeed she was sorry to hear about that. A thought occurred to her. “Have you figured out that I don’t look at anyone in their eyes?’’ came her question in a surprised tone. “Is that why you pull your hair back when you speak to me?’’ It had been in a Transfiguration lesson this year that she had first noticed his eyes and the memory had stuck with her. But it was true, Claudine usually stared at everyone’s foreheads, noses, lips, just past their ears to the distance behind them… anywhere but their eyes.

It was only after the fact that it occurred to Heath that Claudine might think he was laughing at her, and he inwardly berated himself over it. What was wrong with him? He hardly ever laughed at anything, and now it was like he turned into a giggling idiot whenever he was around her. Ugh, this storm must be affecting his emotions as well as his memory! "Sorry," he said with an apologetic look back at Claudine. "It's not you… I was just imagining my sister's reaction if I asked her to apparate to Espresso Patronum for you."

Then the conversation turned to the lack of magic, and Heath had no idea how to respond. He never really thought of his lack of confidence in spellwork as a blessing in disguise until he heard Claudine. If anything, he had the opposite problem! "I know," he replied. "If you like, I can help you. I'm kind of used to doing things without magic. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m not very good at wandwork.”

Wow, that came out wrong! Now Claudine probably thought he was too lazy or too dumb to learn magic. Way to make a fool of yourself, Heath! he thought. “I mean, I can do the spells when I practice alone," he explained, "but in a classroom when there’s people around to watch me fail…” He sighed, nervously running a hand through his hair. Did Claudine have any idea where he was going with this?

Heath didn't know how Claudine would react when he told her why he always hid his eyes, but he didn't expect her to feel sorry for him! He was torn between feeling guilty for making her pity him and gratified that she actually cared. "It's okay," he said, realizing too late how that probably sounded. "Not okay that it happened, but you don't have to be sorry."

Merlin, was he ever going to stop saying the wrong thing?! He looked around the room for a distraction when Claudine asked another question that caught him off guard. Come to think of it, he had noticed that about her, but he didn’t think anything of it at the time. He wondered if her reasons for not looking people in the eye were similar to his own reason for hiding his eyes, but he didn’t ask. She could tell him in her own time. “I have noticed, but that’s not why,” he replied. “It’s because I trust you not to judge me for whatever you see there."

She could tell him in her own time. “I have noticed, but that’s not why,” he replied. “It’s because I trust you not to judge me for whatever you see there."

Claudine shook her head, a small grin forming on her face. “That would be rude if you were. But since you’re here making me soup, I figured that you weren’t laughing at me.’’ Heathen was the only one helping her during this time {or the only one she remembered offering to help her feel better} and she hoped she’d remember this tomorrow and all the days that followed. Oh? He wasn’t good at spellwork? “Really?’’ she asked in surprise. “A far as I can remember you were never terrible. But you shouldn’t worry about it. We all have spells that make us want to throw our hands up and scream in frustration.’’ Yes, this was her experience talking. The Slytherin considered the Gryffindor’s plight. “That sounds like me and public speaking. I hate having to do presentations in front of everyone.’’ She shrugged. “I hope you realise that you’re not bad at magic. You just need a bit of a boost in your confidence.’’ Which was a lot harder than one might think but it wasn’t an impossible task.

Yes, she did. Yes, she had to be sorry because Claudine thought that someone as nice as Heathen didn’t deserve to be treated in any bad way. Only thing was, she wasn’t going to tell him this because Claudine was never one to express her emotions outright to another person and she didn’t want him to feel embarrassed if he thought she was pitying him too much.

His response to her question caught her off guard, stopping her mulling. What? He trusted her? Claudine never thought that anyone would want to trust her save family members, William Williamson and someone who was once upon a time her best friend {though at that time, she wasn’t even sure she had ever had a best friend. Memory, you know}. “Oh.’’ Claudine was lost for words and honestly, if she hadn’t been, she was unclear as to what to say. “I won’t, I promise,’’ she replied, hoping that was enough to reassure him and staring at Heath’s chin in surprise but at the same time feeling happy about the revelation. This only led to another question. “Why though? Haven’t you ever noticed that I can be rude and very crude sometimes?’’ Claudine was literally nicer to creatures as opposed to humans.

This only led to another question. “Why though? Haven’t you ever noticed that I can be rude and very crude sometimes?’’ Claudine was literally nicer to creatures as opposed to humans.

Heath returned Claudine’s grin with a small one of his own. “Sound reasoning,” he replied, nodding. He was relieved that she didn’t think he was laughing at her. He would never do that! She knew that, right? He would never laugh at anybody; he’d had that happen to him too many times to ever want to do it to anyone else. That was why he hardly ever allowed himself to laugh at anything at all. Then there could be no misunderstandings. “I would never laugh at you.”

Heath was so lost in thought that he almost missed Claudine’s next words. Seriously, what was wrong with him? He hardly ever talked about his family, and he never revealed his insecurities to anyone. Now within the past few minutes, he’d done both. He blinked confusedly. So she didn’t think he was terrible at spells? That was surprising. “That’s probably because I hide it well,” he said quietly. He was good at hiding, or so he thought until just now. Did the storm make him forget how to hide his emotions? Or maybe it made him forget why he had to instead? “The only way I can cast spells in lessons is to pretend to be someone else…”

It was no surprise to Heath that Claudine didn’t like public speaking; he felt the same way about it. “I know. I don’t like it either,” he said. “That sounds completely mad, doesn’t it? An actor who hates public speaking…” He chuckled softly. “... but the two things are more different than you might think. In acting, you usually have a script to stop you from saying the wrong thing, and if you do, it’s the character you play who is judged for it, not yourself.”

Heath smiled at Claudine’s encouragement - that was exactly what his mum told him, but it was a thing easier said than done - and his smile grew when she promised not to judge him. He already knew that, otherwise he would never have told her any of this, but it was still nice to hear. “I know you won’t,” he said. For several agonizing moments, he thought he said the wrong thing by telling Claudine he trusted her until she finally spoke. He thought for a minute, but he could not for the life of him recall seeing her be rude to anyone… though he wasn’t sure if that was because it never happened or because of his deteriorating memory. “Maybe you are,” he conceded, “but you’ve never been rude to me.”

On the contrary, she’d shown him kindness when he needed it most, and she had no idea what that meant to him… and she never would. The more of himself he revealed to her, the more he feared he’d scare her away, not because he didn’t trust her but because that’s what everyone did when they saw the real Heath. They always left. His eyes darted nervously around the room in search of something to change the subject before he said too much. “How’s your cold?” he asked, looking at her with concern.

His eyes darted nervously around the room in search of something to change the subject before he said too much. “How’s your cold?” he asked, looking at her with concern.

He would never laugh at her? Claudine was confused yet again as to why Heath was always so kind to her; he was the only one whom she could remember that didn’t annoy her. These facts sort of confused her. Maybe she was loosing touch with her personality. Claudine impatiently dabbed at her runny nose with a tissue. Ugh. She hated to be sick. But her focus was still on Heath. She was learning more about him during this conversation than she had ever had. “I think you should stop that. You should always be you,’’ she advised firmly.

The Slytherin returned to her original position of resting her chin on her hands. It dawned on her that Heath might not like who he was and that made her sad. She thought he was one of the nicest persons she ever met and he was a good friend to her and no doubt to anyone else. “You shouldn’t be afraid of anyone judging you. No matter who you choose to be, there are idiots who will judge still. The way I see it is you should be the person you were born as.” There was no way that she was going to tell him what she thought of him; Claudine found it difficult to express her feelings and thoughts, especially if it involved someone else.

Claudine chuckled, still reeling slightly from Heath’s revelation earlier. “Fair point.” It seemed they would continue to get along well but this sort of felt like deja vu. Hadn’t she had a friendship like this before until something bad happened? “It’s still the same, I think. I believe I’d feel a lot better once I have that soup.’’ Or did Heath forget about it?

Hadn’t she had a friendship like this before until something bad happened? “It’s still the same, I think. I believe I’d feel a lot better once I have that soup.’’ Or did Heath forget about it?
Now it was Heath’s turn to be at a loss for words. All his life, he’d been pressured to be someone else. His grandfather wanted him to be strong and confident. His grandmother wanted him to be dignified and prideful. His teachers in muggle school wanted him to be a carbon copy of all the other boys in his class. Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine anyone would want to see his true self! Would she still think the same if she saw the depths of emotion and insecurity hidden behind his stoic facade? No, he didn’t dare get his hopes up! Everyone who saw that side of him decided it was too much to handle.

He drew in a sharp breath that sounded like a gasp, and a long silent pause followed as he fought against a sudden onslaught of emotions. “I think you’re the only person who does,” he said when he finally found his voice. Oh, if only you knew, he thought. He knew all too well that people would judge him. That was why he rarely initiated interactions. If he waited for people to come to him, it bought him time to read them first, so that when they did interact, he could be something they’d like.

Heath blinked, unsure what to make of that last sentence, and he didn’t even try to hide the conflict in his eyes. He knew Claudine was trying to be kind, kinder than he’d seen her be to anyone else, but she didn’t understand. If he stayed the person he was born as, he would never be anything but an outsider in his own family, and that wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted to become something greater than that! Nonetheless, he wasn’t about to bring that up. He’d already revealed too much of himself already! “I like the way you see things,” he said, smiling slightly, and that was true, even if he wasn’t sure he agreed with it.

What? Oh, right… he was supposed to be making her soup. He hadn’t forgotten; he just got distracted. After all, it would’ve been rude to walk away in the middle of their conversation. “I’ll get on that right away,” he said, returning to the stove. Now what was he doing before he left? Something about vegetables… chopping them? No, he’d already done that. Now he remembered! He was supposed to cook them in butter.

After he did that, he added the other ingredients to the pot, though without his memory or a cookbook, he was mostly just guessing at the measurements. He remained in front of the stove, stirring occasionally as the soup simmered. Wasn’t he supposed to add some spices? He could faintly recall seeing his granny use them in her soup, but he didn’t know which ones she used. Knowing his luck, he’d probably add the wrong ones or add too much of something and spoil the soup. He wasn’t going to risk it; he’d just let Claudine season it to her liking when it was done.

Heath lost track of the time it took to make the soup, but when everything looked like it had cooked through, he assumed it was done. He spooned some into a bowl for Claudine and another much smaller bowl for himself. Before he could even think about serving it to her, he had to test it to make sure it was okay. Hmm… it didn’t taste like Granny Jones’s recipe. In fact, it wasn’t very flavorful at all, but it wasn’t horrible. “Sorry if it’s not good,” he said, setting the bowl on the table in front of Claudine. “I’ve never cooked anything before.” Not unless potions counted at least!
