It was bright and early on the morning after the feast. A fresh, 8 am class as the Headmaster had warned just the night before. How many had taken him seriously and sought to get a good night's sleep was yet to be seen but Trent himself had gone to bed at a decent hour and felt...well...great.
The rain had come and gone, the grass was newly watered, the sun was up and offering a bit of warmth in the Scottish country side. It was the perfect set up and left the man more excited to begin the day's lesson.
Hard to believe, but somehow he'd missed teaching over the summer. Missed springing surprises on them and watching them react--quick on their feet or entirely malfunctioning.
Malachi stood facing the lake with his back turned to the castle. He inhaled deeply, enjoying the early morning while he still could. Before they got down to business. The man felt perfectly at peace. A glance down at his watch told him the students would be arriving soon.
Well rested, he hoped. On time, he hoped even more. The absence of a door to drag them out was no guarantee things would be any better.
OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

So your average spell would have no effect on the kelpies. Good to know. Naya hoped that she would never actually be in the presence of a kelpie, but at Hogwarts......you never know. All the more reason to pay close attention in Defense Against the Dark Arts class. Suddenly, the room was filled with wooden horses.
Oh this was going to be interesting. They had to place a bridle on the wooden horses who looked slightly less than friendly. Well at least they had back up. Things shouldn’t get too out of hand, right? They weren’t real kelpies.......yet. Following the Headmaster’s instructions, Naya went and got herself a bridle. Now to choose a horse. Choosing the one she hoped was the least irritated, she was poised to begin. Usually Naya would take a moment to practice the incantation and wand movement, but there seemed to be little time for that today.
Naya knew she had to focus and get the spell right. She had no intention of being trampled by a wooden horse or suffering whatever damage a wooden horse could cause. Wand at the ready, the Gryffindor took a deep breath. With one eye on her horse, she performed the wand movement and said, “Fixate”. With much concentration she tried to guide the bridle toward the horse. Just as the bridle got close, the horse darted off in a different direction. It was as if he was saying, “You didn’t think it would be that easy, did you?”. Horse-1, Naya-0. Time to reload for round 2.

Sure, Flora wasn't all that ready to DIE, but if she needed to go, what better way to do so than by the hands.. hooves.. FINS? of a Kelpie? Flora could see it now. Her name on the front page of the Daily Prophet.

It would be great. Her parents wouldn't be too happy, of course. But whatever. It wasn't like she'd have to deal with them. "If you punch it hard enough, the Kelpie might not even be able to drag themselves into the water." Just saying, Professor Headmaster.

"Let's get into." With a flick of his wand, an army of wooden horses appeared; enough for everyone to have one. There the entire time, disillusioned until they needed to be seen. Ornery, ready to go, some stomped at the ground. Harmless. Or...well....he thought they would be, but now he wasn't so sure. And finally.
The moment she had been waiting for ever since the word Kelpie was mentioned. The moment where she would finally be able to, not only punch, but also RIDE a.. bunch of wooden horses? What in the name of Merlin? Flora's left eye might have been twitching once again, not because she was trying to pretend to be awake this time, but because she was just not expecting THAT.
They had to practice first. Right. On a wooden horse. Double right. On a wooden horse who wasn't the most friendly. Triple right.
Flora had already picked out the horse that she had wanted before making her way over to the bucket of bridles. "Fixate. Fixate. Fiiiiixaaaaate." She practiced the wand movement, then the incantation. Then the wand movement and incantation once again. And only when she was confident enough, which was pretty fast, probably too fast, did she put the incantation and wand movement together. "Fixate."
Her aim may have been a little off, though. And the bridle might've headed towards the opposite end of the horse's head. Oops?

WHY was the Headmaster looking at him so bad tempered ? What had he done wrong?!
His answer came a moment later when he said that he had already exampled about the bridle and placement charm and the Hufflepuff frowned. He was preeeetty sure the Headmaster had NOT mentioned it but he wasn’t a hundred percent certain of himself either. How much had he missed when he had zoned out? ”Yeah ok. I’ll pay attention” just...hurry up with and begin the practical portion of the class already or else he was going to zone out again.
And then the Headmaster suddenly flicked his wand and when Minjae saw the wooden horses, appearing seemingly out of thin air though he knew it was because the disillusioned charm had been lifted, a wide grin formed on his face. NOW he was giving the lesson his full attention! Because although he was really bad at theory parts of classes, he usually shined in the practical bit. He watched curiously when the man demonstrated the wand movement twice and he mimicked it without a wand in his hand.
He looked over at the bucket where the bridles were and when they were told to grab one he spun around on his heels and began to power walk to get one. This was going to be epic right?! Especially when he mentioned that the horses weren’t very friendly. Oh he couldn’t wait to start!
Once he reached the bucket, the fifth year took one and got back to find a wooden horse to tame. And was Ewan bowing to the horse? LOL! this wasn’t a duel, Prefect!
K really was trying to focus on all the answers her classmates were giving, but at the same time she was also still trying to contemplate what she would do in the case of running into a Kelpie. Her first instinct was to convince Lucas to take the fall and ride it, but she seriously doubted the Headmaster would appreciate that answer. Especially as he didn't seem to overly enthralled with the responses as of yet. She was still contemplating a more acceptable response, when Headmaster Trent flicked his wand and a bunch of wooden horses were around them and explaining their next task.
Ahh, okay. So enchant the bridle to go to the wooden horse thing and put it on it's face? That should be easy enough to do, right?
K followed her fellow classmates to the buckets with the bridles, practicing her wand movements on the way and chanting the incantation in her head so she wouldn't forget it. Once there was space for her to get closer, she pointed her wand at the bucket. "Fixate". She was pleasantly surprised to see something from the bucket move and she used her wand to guide it towards a wooden horse she had chosen.
Of course she did not notice that because she'd used the spell straight into the bucket she'd grabbed more than one bridle and they were now a terribly tangled mess.

Soooo...she probably wasn't going to live if she met a kelpie. That was cool. This was fine. Her confidence wasn't CRUSHED or anything.
...
Looking down at the ground, all KINDS of disappointed in her instincts for being the absolute WRONG kind of instincts, the third year listened to ALL Headmaster Trent's directions. At least there was no chance the wooden horse would eat her. Lucky her, right?
Collecting herself a bridle, Cecelia eyed it and then the wooden horses, deciding on one that seemed pretty calm in comparison to those ground stomping ones. She needed all the odds in her favor today. She approached slowly, setting the bridle down and taking out her wand. "Fixate...Fixate...Fixate." Easiest incantation ever, which was also in her favor. "So..." She had to put it all together and guide the bridle onto the horse. Couldn't be THAT hard, could it? She was a THIRD year now, after all. "Fixate!" The whole guiding process was a liiiiittle more difficult than she'd imagined, if she was being honest. Like, the bridle was going TOWARDS the horse, but then it was going ABOVE the horse, and Cecelia didn't really get why? Maybe she'd been a little too aggressive on that try. Too much OOMPH. Wouldn't be the first time that happened.
Sooo what was everyone supposed to do? Why couldn't they put the stuff on the horse with out magic?? Austin sighed and didn't get his wand out. He decided that he'd not fling anything this year. So he quietly practised saying the spell with out magic first.
"Fixate....fixate...'
Okay, so Headmaster Trent didn't totally hate her answer. At least hers had been logical. Avalon usually tried to hold back on being judgmental in class, but some of her classmates' answers downright ridiculous. Seriously, punch it in the snout?! That was a surefire way to get yourself killed. And why was Ewan bowing to the horse? Merlin, it wasn't a hippogriff!! She truly couldn't believe the stupidity of her classmates sometimes.
After grabbing a bridle from the bucket, the young Ravenclaw took a few minutes to familiarize herself with it. She wanted to make sure it was in the correct position before she had to place it. There didn't seem to be much room for error, and those horses didn't seem very forgiving. Avalon had cast the placement charm before, but never on an object that required such precise maneuvers. Taking a deep breath, she pointed her wand at the bridle. "Fixate!" With as steady a hand as she could manage, she guided it over until it was hovering close to the horse's head.
Now, should she go for a slow-and-steady lowering, or a quick drop? She didn't want to startle it, but if she took too long, the horse could get irritated. After a brief moment of hesitation, she decided to go for the slower approach. Maybe if she did it so gently, the horse wouldn't even notice?
Watching Headmaster Trent’s reaction it was clear everyone had said something wrong – not just her. Everyone was going to die today – not her….and why was that a relief? ”right, i meant to use the charm in case I wasn’t able to get the bridle on before it attempted dragging me underwater. That way I could use the placement charms without worrying about drowning at the same time” she hoped that explained where her mental state had been. The whole be one step ahead incase the worse comes bit of it all. “thank you for your concern, sir” she added with a kind smile.
fixate okay, she could do that. Maybe she could fixate something somewhere else – place a painting on the wall and leave it there so no one could remove it – no, no we aren’t doing anything stupid this year she thought as she looked forward and watched Headmaster Tate as he demonstrated the wand movements. She took her hand drawing her hand in the shape of a bridle at first.
Okay, okay she could do this. When Headmaster Tate asked them to be careful, she just smiled, “yes, sir…I’ll try at least” at least the kelpies weren’t real kelpies yet – right? Looking at the wooden horses Islay just squared her shoulders and selected a bridle.
“lets do this,” she murmured as she pointed her wand at it and began to practice the spell, “fixate” she tried casting as her wand moved along the shape of the bridle – but nothing okay…she could do this, just breathe. She’d try again in a bit.

As the Headmaster responded to her strategy, she felt a little sense of hope, but slowly could feel the dwindling of her confidence as he told her why it wouldn't work. "Well true....but what i-," she couldn't think of a rebuttal and thought it best not to argue with the Headmaster, WHICH SHE WOULDN'T DO! Keeping her composure, she responded calmly, "Forgive me...You're correct, Headmaster, it wouldn't work..."
....
The feeling of her inner disappointment didn't last long as he continued on with the lesson however. She blinked caught off guard by the army of wooden horses that appeared after he'd waved his wand. WHOA! Faye couldn't help admiring the structure of the horses, they were very interesting! Her attention soon back onto the Headmaster as he addressed the class with his next instructions. They would be bridling the wooden horses with the placement charm, Fixate. Watching and listening to his instructions very carefully as to memorize everything he was doing to make sure she had it correct from the pronunciation to the wand movement.
When it was time, she followed the crowd towards the bucket of bridles, managing to grab one for herself. The redhead soon walked back towards the army of stomping horses. Walking a bit towards the left until she managed to find an unclaimed horse. "Right.." The third year positioned her bridle in line with the wooden horse. Hearing the Headmaster's last words did make her question just how mean these horses would be, which most likely meant that it was going to be a challenge. She grew up around horses, so at least some idea, but this was new territory since they were wooden. Faye pulled out her wand, pointing it towards the bridle on the ground before speaking clearly, "Fixate!" Making sure to keep a steady hand and keep her concentration, she watched as the bridle slowly began to levitate and go in the direction of the wooden horse. Yes! She wanted to celebrate her excitement that her concentration was working, but looking at the horse was making her a little apprehensive....It was going to move wasn't it...
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Oh.
Trent had a point. Clearly Claudine had not thought that one through. Still… she didn’t feel bad because there were a lot of stupid answers floating around and she unabashedly craned her neck to throw judgy looks at some of the others. “Um…’’ Clearly flustered, she racked her brain for something that could fix her answer. “I believe some witches and wizards can do wandless magic...perhaps that would work if a full transfiguration isn’t done. I mean, if I could just transfigure my face slightly, enough to speak incantations.’’ She shrugged.
Wow. Look at all the horses.
Maybe her answer had been stupid, but Claudine was determined to make up for it during the activities. It was a good thing that she discovered she had a knack for Charms last term; it boosted her confidence significantly. Without hesitation, after carefully watching Trent demonstrate, the Snakette collected a bridle.
“Fixate. Fixate. Fixate.’’ The incantation was muttered repeatedly. It was a simple one, really. Alright… so this charm required the object to be guided. Which horse should she choose? She randomly selected one where she saw less students were crowded, which coincidentally happened to be next to Cole. It wasn't until she heard his voice that she realised with a sinking feeling it was him. Her fingers clutched at the horse's neck where she had been running her hand over absently as she gathered her focus for spell casting.
Whatever Headmaster Trent pointed out, Missa noted it down. She supposed this was the necessity of saying your battle plans out loud. You realise the flaws and then fix it. A thing she was trying to apply in her daily life constantly these days.
Practise, learn, and do better.
As the headmaster went on, the brunette retrieved her wand - totally not overthinking the possibility of eventually riding a kelpie after taking control of it. That’d be ridiculous, right? Could you really ride a kelpie though?
Mirroring the headmaster’s hand movements for a few tries, the Ravenclaw repeated the spell a couple of times - before moving to get herself a bridle. Alright, lets do this.
“Fixate” she said quietly at first, allowing herself a test run before actually aiming. Then much more firmly, she cast the spell, “FIXATE”
And sure enough, the bridle started to levitate it’s way to the horse.

Noah wore a confused expression on his face when the Headmaster asked about strategy. Had he not said he'd use the placement charm? That made the creature docile, yes? He bit his lip, becoming a little more frustrated when the Headmaster announced that they would be learning said placement charm in class. Now he was just confused. He sighed, letting it go, there were other things to worry about and he figured he had just been too vague- hence, the question.
He had read about this charm and had even tried practicing it before back at his former skill. He nodded, watching the Professor's wand movement before practicing himself. Got it. He could do this. When the Headmaster let them go, he headed for the buckets and grabbed a bridle for his wooden horse.
Noah stopped in his tracks when he heard Aboli's question. He had to carefully cover his laugh as a cough before he began practicing the wand movement. However, he got distracted once more when he saw Ewan bowing to the wooden horse. Was he gonna name him too? he wondered and cackled. Turning back to the task at hand, he had to re focus. Okay, wand movement down. Now incantation. "Fixate. Fixate." Eying the wooden horse in front of him, he closed his mind and cleared it- letting all distractions slip away. All girl drama, boys dorm drama, family things... Imagine where you want to put the bridle.
He paused, picturing the horse's neck and face. Noah imagined what it was like to secure it. Opening his eyes, he took a deep breath, "Fixate." He pursed his lips.. He was close but didn't get the placement correctly. Walking over to the wooden horse, he examined it, making note of how it was constructed. AH! He had done it wrong. He jogged back to his spot and then tried imagining the placement of the bridle again. He could do this.
And...he'd mark his son down as "dead" as well. Welp. That was particularly worrying and Malachi stared at his son for a silent moment, trying to figure out how serious he was being.
"You wanna die? Because that's how you die. Kelpies aren't looking for friends. You've given it dinner and a show, no more, no less. Try again." PLEASE.

Dinner and a show sounded incredible. Not his fault the Dad-master lacked significant vision. Kale had just decided, right now, in this moment, that Kelpies were deeply misunderstood creatures. Nessie was nothing more than a sugar booger.
He would not even mention how his father had no faith in his proposal. Surprise surprise.
Kale was so wrapped up in making his plan work that he missed some of the direction. Only the first bit. And it seemed easy enough. Fixate on the bridle. He wasn't sure what fixating on the bridle would do, but he wasn't the Professor.
No wait. Get the bridle. Then use fixate as a SPELL. Aha!
He figured that out by watching his peers. Thanks, friends.
Kale drew his wand and tried to emulate his peers. He squinted his lil eyes and observed them keenly. It wasn't uniform amongst kids, but he got the gist. He practiced the understood version of the wand movement a few times, really letting it settle in his wrist, before he spoke the spell aloud.
FINALLY, when he was feeling like he was ready to make a horse friend, he pointed his wand at one of the horses near the end and said with a swish, "Fixate!"

Ooooooooooh.
The wooden horses seemed cool. But he had said they weren't friendly. So Aboli's hand was raised immediately with a QUESTION. "Headmaster - should we attempt to introduce ourselves to the wooden horse we'll be choosing BEFORE we bridle them or...should we just go for it?" It seemed rather rude, but...they were just wood, after all. But he said they weren't FRIENDLY. She couldn't stop thinking about THAT. "And is the spell more accurate the closer you are to your target?" THAT was a better question, wasn't it?
Should she what now?
“....it doesn’t want to be your friend, it wants you for breakfast. There’s absolutely no need.” A fact he hoped they’d gotten after several of them mentioned wanting to sing to it and play nice. Kelpies were not nice, no need for them to be.
“But yes, you’ll find greater precision with a decrease in distance.” That, however, came with its own dangers.

As for the lessons on basic safety, he might just end up missing those to study. He didn’t need to be there nor did he wanted to waste his time there when he had other things to do.
With the actual lesson starting now, Ewan watched closely as the professor gave a flick of his wand, causing several wooden horses to appear. He watched curiously as they began to stomp on the ground for a moment before choosing to focus again on the headmaster.
So, they’d be using the placement charm? This shouldn’t be too difficult then really. The only thing that might cause this to be remotely hard might be the wooden horses, depending on their behaviour but…they were wooden How hard could it be?.
Quietly, the prefect walked over to the and picked up on of the bridles and gave it a once over, getting familiar with it for a moment so that he didn’t end up placing it on the wrong way or something. Turning, he eyed one of the wooden horses, the closest one to him for a moment, curious to see how it would react the closer he got.
Pulling his wand out, he took two measured steps towards one of the wooden horses, the question that Aboli had asked in the back of his head. Not wanting to seem rude and get the stuffing knocked out of him, he did a small incline of the head and bowed as you wood in a wizard’s duel, sigh of respect, just in case and then ”Fixate!” his voice full of confidence. The confidence that can only come with having used the spell before. Slowly, the bridle shifted off the ground and edged towards the sea demon.
Keeping his wand hand steady, he edged it closer and closer until finally, it was within touching distance. Now all he had to do was wait and see if it had worked…
The wooden horse watched the boy bow, not seeing why and not having a thought to find out. Instead, as the boy straightened, the horse reared up on its hind legs, front legs kicking furiously.
The bridle that was heading it’s way got wrapped in one of those front legs. It crashed back down to all fours and took off running. Toward the water. Did he want his bridle back? He’d have to come get it.

It was his acute reaction. "If i had to befriend the kelpie in order to get to ride it to the other side of a lake, as only means of transportation then i’d keep my distance and use a placement charm and a bridle to tame it. I’d be constantly vigilant though because a water demon is not a tame kneazle and can attack you without warning." A bridle probably wasn’t going to be enough to make a wild demon do what you wanted but maybe Cole was wrong?
Suddenly an army of wooden horses appeared. Cole thought great, they weren’t that scary-looking but the stomping on the ground unnerved him slightly. It meant that they were charmed. Gulping he quickly pulled his eyes away from the horses and watched as Headmaster Trent demonstrated the wand movement for the placement charm. He had practiced the placement charm before, so that hopefully shouldn’t be a problem. Getting the bridle on the wooden horse, that was going to be another story. Going over to the bucket, Cole got himself a bridle among the first students when they were allowed to practice.
Choosing a random wooden horse on the left flank, he walked over to stand a good distance away from it hoping that Naya or Claudine would take the horse beside him. He practiced quietly with closed eyes "Fixate, Fixate, Fixate." and the corresponding wand movement. Cole then opened his eyes to stare at his wooden horse with determination. Licking his lips he pulled out his wand and casted firmly "Fixate!" watching as the bridle moved toward his horse that he had dubbed in his head be named Hero. Please let it fall over it head, ears and mouth….
The bridle fell in none of those places but not for any fault of the boy’s. No, the wooden horse ducked its head and moved forward stomping aggressively in an attempt to make the Gryffindor back off. He would not be bridled. Not today.

But okay, trying again. "Honestly, sir, it's kind of difficult to know what I would do until I'm about to do it. You never know what's actually going to happen, after all." Context was everything. Though there was the very real possibility that Trent was, in fact, going to set actual kelpies on them, so maybe he could get a detailed and accurate answer by the end of class. Right now, though... "I can only really give you a hypothetical answer based on a hypothetical kelpie in a hypothetical location. So: I would not be lured by the kelpie in the first place, because I'm not an idiot, and while it's trying to lure me I'd conjure a bridle or find one conveniently abandoned nearby, then move closer and cast that Placement Charm at the same time, while it thinks I'm coming over to climb onto it, because this kelpie is particularly thick. And this is all assuming I'm not at a level where I could just apparate away and not have to deal. Or that my sister isn't with me. She's great at controlling wild things." Like Gryffindors, but that was not something Trent really needed to know.
See? Hypotheticals. They were difficult things to work with. Nem had dozens more answers based on very few different variables to really drive the point of unpredictability home, but ultimately decided to stop there. It would get boring after two or three.
Whatever, time to get started. Nem weaved around people to get to the bucket of bridles, reached between two much taller students and grabbed the first one he could feel, before going to find a space a good distance from the fake horses. He untangled the bridle, and drew his wand from its holster... and pretended very hard that he hadn't heard Song's question about introducing herself to a wooden horse. The suggestion that she should dive right in and go give it a hug was right on the tip of his tongue, but he resisted.
”Right. Okay.” He wouldn’t take the time to argue this. He’d hoped it would be clear this was more for the purpose of sharing ideas, seeing what could work and what would need revising but there was an activity to get to and a distinct lack of interest in pursuing this further.
Malachi nodded at the response, saying nothing further as Upstead went off to grab a bridle.
This was one of the more ornery among the collection. While it waited, the horse stomped at the ground challengingly. It was ready whenever and would not be bridled by the likes of this one.

The sight of wooden horses appearing suddenly was a bit of a surprise. For several moments his attention was fixed on the horses as they stomped at the ground. Something was telling him already that this was going to be easier said than done.
Slowly pulling his gaze away from the wooden horses and back onto the Headmaster just in time to see him performing the necessary wand movement for 'fixate'. The incantation was easy enough. Not a tongue twister like some of those other incantations were. "Fixate, fixate, fixate..." he repeated over and over again almost like some sort of weird chant while he went to collect a bridle from the bucket.
Turning the bridle over in his hands a few times, he held it up in front of him trying to picture it already in place on the wooden horses head area. It looked right from here. Lowering the bridle again, he pulled his wand out and practiced the wand movement a handful of times. If he didn't get that right along with the incantation he wasn't going to stand a chance.
Now came the hard part. Maybe? Luka wasn't honestly sure. Those wooden horses weren't doing anything more than stomping at the ground right now but his big sisters words rung loud and clear in his head, 'Remember Luka, no matter what's happening whether it's inside Hogwarts or anywhere else, constant vigilance is key. Things aren't always as they seem'. He had been told this for as long as he could remember.
Don't be caught off guard by what the wooden horses looked like...
Maybe it would be smarter to wait a moment and see how everyone else approached the situation before he gave it a try himself.
Another horse that was forced into waiting. It appraised the boy for a moment before growing impatient and walking off. When he was ready, he could come find him.

The horse watched the bridle come closer but did not wait for it to land. Instead, the horse reared up on the girl menacingly. Its whinnies were a warning her to get away from it with that bridle.
It landed again with a thud and moved toward her aggressively, trying to force her back back BACK.

THE BRAVEST Gryffindor First Year Flora B. Thiese. Dead Because She Punched A Kelpie In The Snout.
It would be great. Her parents wouldn't be too happy, of course. But whatever. It wasn't like she'd have to deal with them. "If you punch it hard enough, the Kelpie might not even be able to drag themselves into the water." Just saying, Professor Headmaster.
Oops?
Yeah...no he was definitely adding this one to the “dead” list. The Headmaster was almost tempted to move her over to the “super dead” list that currently only James occupied.
Very tempted.
There was a bridle where it was not meant to be. It was NOT a hat nor did the horse ask for one. It began spinning, kicking wildly as it did in an attempt to dislodge it before making a break for the lake altogether. Come get your bridle, girlie.

This horse was not waiting around. It had seen the boy with the bridle and immediately darted toward the lake. If he wanted to bridle him that badly, he would have to come get him.

That was a lot of bridles, wasn’t it? The horse watched the bungle of them, convinced she didn’t know what she was doing. It turned its hind quarters to her, unimpressed and ready to move elsewhere.

This one required barely any effort. The wooden horse glanced up at the bridle above its head then back at the girl. She had taken her shot, now it was its turn.
The horse snorted and stomped, aggressively advancing on the girl in a bid to make her back away from it.
Go away with that bridle, shoo!

What...honestly...was this?
The horse watched the bridle’s slow approach. When the time came, it simply sidled over to avoid it. For extra measure, it turned its hind quarters to the girl. This one was easy to avoid.

fixate okay, she could do that.
It would seem this one was going nowhere, fast. Rather than stick around through the practice, the horse wandered off. She’d have to come find it when she was ready.

The celebration had come far too soon. The “yes” was followed shortly by a raging horse rearing up onto its hind legs so it now towered above her. Its feet kicked indignantly and when they hit the ground again, propelled the horse forward toward the girl. Get her bridle away, silly girl! Or be stomped.

Oh no.
Maybe she could get away before he noticed her?
Was this one just going to stand there? It would appear so. Disinterested, the horse turned and began toward the lake. She knew where to find it when she was ready.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Fiona decided to practice the Placement Charm before even attempting placing the bridle on one of the wooden horses. She rehearsed the proper wand movement before going through the incantation in her mind.
After a few moments, Fiona fetched one of the bridles and approached one of the wooden horses, her wand at the ready and her face determined. Once she was a close but safe distance from the horse, she aimed her wand at the bridle and said firmly, "Fixate!"
Luckily, Aboli couldn't read minds, so she would never know that the younger Slytherin named Nemesis (apt, hmm) thought her first question was silly...but what she DID see was Noah's snort and she managed an ELBOW in his ribs as he passed by, too. "Don't you laugh at me!" she hissed, but she smirked a bit.
She was just PLAYING WITH HIM.
And if she hurt him...wHATEVER. HMPH.
"Thank you, Headmaster." She said with a BOW - why she bowed, she didn't know, but it was too late to take it back, and she was too busy to overthink her ridiculousness, and sooooo she practiced her wand movement and saying the incantation as she made her way closer to the bridles. "Fixate...easy enough."
She pulled a bridle from one of the buckets and went to stand....about TEN feet from a very nice looking wooden horse. "You'll be named Fredrick....here's your bridle," she said simply, more under her breath than anything as she focused. She placed it on the ground...and....gave her wand a brandish. "Fixate!" she cried, and to her delight, it lifted into the air. WHOOH. SO now with her very delicate wrist movement, she moved with it and got closer....until she was about SEVEN feet from the wooden-horse-named-Fred and did her best to guide it to him. But she found her hold on the spell was shaky....she supposed because she wasn't close. She didn't WANT to get closer, though, because in a real life situation, she wouldn't necessarily be ABLE to. So....time to perfect that. She took a step backwards and continued to try to get the bridle on....her eyes were squinted in extreme focus.

Aboli had sniped him - right in the ribs with her unusually pointy elbow. Oof - okay - yeah, he kind of deserved it. Fair point friend. "Those could be classified as weapons, Miss Song," he whispered, flashing her a smile, before returning back to the task at hand. It was fine.. just a small injury- that's all.
As the bridle IMPRESSIVELY missed the target. Noah just sighed. Yeah... This.. This wasn't Noah's day... He kept on missing the horse and hoped that no one was watching. And note to self don't get too close to the horse. He watched as the horse turned away... Darn.... Things weren't going well, were they?
He slumped his shoulders. Maybe he ought to just give up?
Noah turned away from the horse momentarily trying to regain his composure. He paused and picked up his wand. He didn't attempt the spell again. Instead he focused on drawing the bridle with his wand. Noah continued to practice this until he felt confident in his abilities. Right... Okay.. Wait. Where did the horse go? He had LOST a wooden horse...

Phoebe griiiiiinned at the Headmaster and waved her fingers. "I was absolutely telling a very funny joke and I realize now it was in poor taste. And I'm sorry for having a terrible sense of humor." In fact, she'd just get on her way and let him fret privately. In his old man space over there. Grumpy.
She grabbed a bridle and watched for her classmates to get to work. Very unsuccessfully. It appeared that kelpies didn't like the sight of the bridle, so a slow approach didn't work. And a fast approach seemed to startle them. And Kale was getting eaten. "SOMEONE SAVE KALE!"
Phoebe flung herself at where her best bud was being eaten alive. She almost threw the bridle, but instead she thrust it toward the horse and shouted, "FIXATE." Not that she expected it to work, but maybe it would distract the kelpie and save a life.
Fixate, Fixate, Fixate - That was the spell he was suppose to be preforming. With a this horse in front of him ... umm.... that would require him getting nearer the horse that he didn't really want to.
But slowly approaching the wooden horse, at least it wasn't a real kelpie this time ... but Blake wouldn't put much past the headmaster anymore ...
"Fixate" He shouted with the bridle in tow, Blake said it was confidence he was sure that the bridal would stick .. he was sure of it...right???

Kimberly frowned when her wooden horse RUDELY turned it's back on her, but.. she also noticed she definitely had far too many bridles. Sighing, she tried to use the spell to bring the bridles back towards her because she was NOT going near the end of that horse, thank you very much and released the spell so she could manually separate them out.
K separated the two bridles, leaving one near her horse while she returned the other to the bucket, and came back with new determination, even if she was unfortunately reduced to staring at the rear end of the creature. She glanced around seeing that it appeared no one else was having quite the success yet, and turned to square her shoulders and try again.
She aimed her wand at the bridle she had left, Fixate!. Thankfully, it rose in the air, ONE bridle. However ... now there was the difficulty of trying to figuring out how to get to the head of the horse.

Isla gave the headmaster a blank stare. What did he mean how would she ensure that it worked? It was no different than any other charm, spell, transfiguration, etc., etc. that she'd ever learned. You practice it in class and when the time comes, it either works for you or it doesn't. Your fate. It confused her even further that the luring wasn't out of her control. A seminar on safety?! NOPE. They better wisen up fast, because Isla wasn't all about some extra classes. At all.
She jumped a bit when a full-on army of horses appeared. What were they so upset about it? Somebody had gone and stirred up their bee hives for whatever reason, and now it looked like the class was left to deal with it.
Isla stared at the horse ahead of her. Great. She was face to face with something she'd apparently not yet figured out exactly how to defeat. She did know one thing. She was certainly not going to walk right on up to it and punch it (whoever had said that). Isla collected herself a bridle, all whole watching over shoulder for the kelpie, and then moved back to her face-to-face combat with the horse.
Isla got a good grasp on the bridle and tossed the first part of it into the air right in front of her. "FIXATE!" she called out, and then she used the point of her wand to guide it toward the horse and hopefully secure it into place. With any luck, maybe the part that secured its mouth shut would go on first, and then she could use a little magic to get the rest in place.

Well, hypothetical just went out the window. The kelpie horse clearly was not pleased that Naya had tried to rein him in. He was angry and made a move toward the sixth year. Her first instinct was to throw up a shield charm, but of course that would be useless in this situation.
Naya tried not to panic. Panic only made things worse. Focus was what she needed, focus and concentration. Taking a few steps back, she raised her wand again. Naya went through the proper motions and said, “Fixate”, more forcefully this time. Moving back a little further, she concentrated on guiding the bridle toward the horse. She had to get it place. She had to because if she missed, it would only anger the horse more. The Headmaster wouldn’t let her get trampled by a kelpie horse......would he? Hopefully she would handle the situation and not have to find out.

She had it. Alexia KNEW she had it. She had been watching her classmates do this for a few minutes now, and had gained the confidence to attempt the activity herself. She was going to do this WITHOUT major catastrophe, and honestly, her mom would be proud of her right now. For not jumping into this activity with the force of 1,000 bulls and damaging something, or someone. She was being responsible. Did everyone catch that? Her responsibility?
She grabbed a bridle and smiled to herself as she laid eyes on her horse. Some students were already doing this correctly. This shouldn't be hard for little old her. She just had to follow the steps. It was like pitching. You had to go all the way around before throwing the ball, or else you were making a wimpy underhand throw.
She tossed the bridle in the air, making sure to follow it with her nose. Didn't want that hitting her on the head, did she? That happened to one of her teammates once, and her mom had to drive her to the emergency room. Except it was a ball and not a bridle, and it wasn't at 'early-o-clock' in the morning. She did have a very minor concussion, though. Not Alexia. Her teammate.
Rooted feet. Clear throat. Wand out. She was definitely making the first two instructions up. Anyway....
"Fixate!" She practically yelled the words as she hurriedly made the wand motions. She was feeling pretty confident right now. Maybe a little TOO confident.

SO anyway. Bernie was DEFINITELY going to hop on the back of one of these horsies the very MINUTE she'd get a bridle on it. She'd show him. Silly Headmaster.
Fixateeeeeeeee, she practiced the wand movement and words to herself a few times before fetching a bridle. And a horse. Fixate fixate fixate. How hard could this be?
"Oi, horsie, watch this!" she called out LOUDLY, making sure the fake horse had its attention on her as she aimed the bridle straight for its snout. What had her housemate said? PUNCH IT ON THE SNOUT. Hehehe. If Bernie didn't concentrate, the bridle might do exactly that....
