Default DADA Lesson 1: Ride ‘em kelpies

It was bright and early on the morning after the feast. A fresh, 8 am class as the Headmaster had warned just the night before. How many had taken him seriously and sought to get a good night's sleep was yet to be seen but Trent himself had gone to bed at a decent hour and felt...well...great.

The rain had come and gone, the grass was newly watered, the sun was up and offering a bit of warmth in the Scottish country side. It was the perfect set up and left the man more excited to begin the day's lesson.

Hard to believe, but somehow he'd missed teaching over the summer. Missed springing surprises on them and watching them react--quick on their feet or entirely malfunctioning.

Malachi stood facing the lake with his back turned to the castle. He inhaled deeply, enjoying the early morning while he still could. Before they got down to business. The man felt perfectly at peace. A glance down at his watch told him the students would be arriving soon.

Well rested, he hoped. On time, he hoped even more. The absence of a door to drag them out was no guarantee things would be any better.

OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet!

CLASS HAS BEGUN!

Well, he really hadn't been joking about classes starting early the next morning. Thankfully Louise was sort of used to it by now, so she ended up going to bed at a somewhat decent hour after chatting with some of her dormmates. Regardless, it was still a bit hard for her to wake up that morning. But she did and after putting on her uniform, smoothing down her hair and grabbing a bite to eat, Louise was on her way to the lesson.

The cool morning air helped keep her awake and actually perked up her mood a bit. "Good morning, Headmaster," she said as she arrived, joining the cluster of students behind him, and not really standing by anyone in particular.

The first night back had been absolutely exhausting to say the least, mentally, emotionally, and physically. So Nina had been sure to get her full eight hours of sleep in before the first day of early morning classes. She didn't mind class so early. In fact, she preferred it over the late-night Astronomy lessons. Knowing her first lesson would be with the Headmaster also helped in that regard. He was still so handsome.

As she made her way towards the lake, she made brief eye contact with Missa and gave the girl a smile before approaching their Headmaster. "Good morning, Headmaster Trent. You look very pensive," she gave him a fleeting smile. Nina couldn't help think that this was her very last first day of classes. A thought which made her a little sad. Something she tried to hide as she turned to find a place to stand near Jina. She gave her fellow seventh year a polite smile. Their time had been cut short on the train due to Eiji's jab and Nina still felt guilty for leaving so abruptly.

There was just SOMETHING about the smell after a lot of rain. The scent of still slightly damp soil mixed with sunshine and fresh air. It was a nice smell. A smell that made her feel quite happy and alive, even more so than she usually did. He’d done a good job deciding to have class outside today, Trent had.

”Hi headmaster!” The blonde waved eagerly at the man, looking from him to the lake and back. ”You gonna toss the sleepy students in the lake to wake them up some?” He HAD warned them to get a good night sleep, after all. It wasn’t a bad plan, either. The water was usually quite cold.

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

Eight o'clock in the morning was a ridiculous time for class. RIDICULOUS. Especially after the Start of Term Feast - honestly, that amount of good food, new people and catching up with friends was not a recipe for a bright and early wake up. Safe to say, as Józef approached the Lake he was NOT chipper, and he was not even trying to look like he was.

"Morning, Headmaster." At least he waited until after greeting the man to yawn.

AND he covered his mouth!!!

As much as he had missed being back at the castle, 8am classes were something he hadn't missed at all. They still felt too early for his liking. And, even worse, this lesson was taking place oUTSIDE? By the lAKE?? Something about that didn't sit well with the sixth year at all.

Sigh.

He was going to be one of those people malfunctioning for the entirety of the lesson.

Approaching the area by the lake where most of the people were gathered, Lucas found an empty spot to stand in that was close enough but, well...... wasn't too close to where the Headmaster was standing. He didn't want all that anxiety and he also didn't want to give the man an excuse for an awkward conversation. The less they talked - and the less he brought up his OWL grade - the better, right?

Except he had one very small greeting..... "Uh, good morning, headmaster."

There. Done.

And please don't toss sleepy students into the lake. Please.

It was no surprise that Alexia slept very easily last night. The excitement was fun for a while, but had the after effect of eventually wearing her out. As soon as she was under the covers she was asleep like that. The long sleep also saved her behind in the morning, considering she had an 8am class to attend. Alexia stifled a yawn behind her hand. She wasn't quite used to an actual school schedule or sleep schedule yet. She was going to be fine, eventually. She just needed a coffee. Guess fresh air was going to have to do.

Alexia took two deep breaths ........

The morning air woke her up slightly, but it was nothing compared to the sweet, warm, caffeine. Alexia stifled another yawn.

Hey, if class had to be this early, at least it was outside. The eleven year old might have died staring at the teacher inside a traditional classroom this early. She didn't know how she DID it when she was in public school. No wonder she was always taking naps back then. Still in thought, she started twirling a clump of her dyed hair around her index finger. The action made her hair curly slightly for a short amount of time, which was cuuute.

She laid eyes on the Headmaster/Professor. Okay, when Alexia said multiple times that she would be fine, she didn't mean like this. She was still waking up for goodness sakes! Maybe she would just stay quiet until she could process more about what was happening.

"Good morning....." What exactly was Alexia supposed to say? Professor? Headmaster? Sir? She was going with the last one. "Sir." Her voice betrayed the tiniest bit of tiredness, but that really didn't matter to her. Everyone was tired, it was 8 in the morning.

Eight am wasn't that bad. Being in the sun wasn't that bad either. But having to drag the entire class out to the lake? The ground was wet, she felt like she could feel the wet seeping into her shoes even though it likely wasn't. The outdoors were nice when it was less soggy out. She had gotten down to breakfast, so she shouldn't have any rumbling tummy while the headmaster was teaching. Walking closer she noticed a few of her familiar faces.

Tugging her bag up a bit and wishing that her headband wasn't slipping, she smiled at one of the new Gryffindors (Alexia) hoping that she was feeling comfortable in the place so far. Then she noticed Cece, she liked the girl but giving ideas for punishments after watching Fuller Thompson getting yanked out of the classroom last term was not something Charlie liked. Shaking her head at the thought of her brand new clothes getting tossed in the lake made her uncomfortable. Finally finding a place to stand with the others she greeted the Headmaster, "Morning Headmaster" He was looking extra dapper today.... did he know?

Faye was up a little earlier than normal, which wasn't too off for the third year since she was a bit of an early riser naturally. The third year made sure her clothes were neat and tidy as she was making her way out of the castle towards the lake where the Headmaster was waiting for everyone. Of course curiosity was striking her brain as to what today's lesson could involve, but she composed herself as she neared the lake to where everyone was beginning to gather.

Feeling a little relieved not to be late, especially since it was the Headmaster taught Defense Against the Dark Arts. She cleared her throat before speaking politely, "Good morning Headmaster.." Calmly tucking some hair behind her ear as she patiently waited for the rest of the students to arrive and for the beginning of today's lesson.

...What if they were going to go swimming?

8 AM was WAY too early for a class. Sure he had been going to early classes all week, but his body hadn't gotten used to it. Plus he was having trouble sleeping. Maybe it was because he was in a new place, or maybe it was because he didn't know many of the Slytherins he was sharing a dorm with. Every time he went to bed he was on edge. Was the dungeon really a safe place for them to be sleeping? Since his entire family had been Gryffindors he had heard stories about how they would sleep in a tower and awake to the chirping of birds as they flew by. But Slytherins slept at the bottom of the castle, and that worried him. Anything could happen to them, and they could get trapped down there.

The moment the sun touched Dylan's pale skin he let out a loud groan. Why did they have to walk all the way outside for class? He had to admit the walk helped him wake up, but he would have rather walked his tired self back underground to sleep.

The headmaster was facing the water so he didn't bother saying hello. Instead he did his best to look presentable. He tucked in his shirt, and began fussing with his tie. In the rush to get going this morning he didn't bother tying it, which was not a good idea because now he had to do it without a mirror. Why were ties so hard?

Okay so maybe she didn’t exactly want to be here, but she was here. That was the important distinction – right? With a kind and almost nervous smile on her face as she looked up at Headmaster Trent. ”Goodday Headmaster Trent,” she gave him a nod as she came to a stop not far off from Kimberly.

”Good morning Kimmie” she smiled to the girl she smile to the young girl and stifling a yawn glanced around at everyone else.

The Headmaster had not been joking when he said classes would be starting at 8am the morning after the Feast. And while Drew had not gone to bed early like some of his classmates, in fact he didn't get sleep until two in the morning, he still looked fresh and bright eyed. He was so used to late nights and early mornings anyway, not to mention that he had a pile of beautifying products in his dorm that did wonders for bags and dark circles.

With his usual swagger, Drew made his way down to where the first DADA class was being held. "Morning Headmaster." He inclined his head towards the man before moving off into the crowd. He gave a few of the girls he had met last night a wave and then stood with his hands in his pockets while he waited for the class to start.

Phoebe was definitely on time for class, although it was disconcerting to be on time and yet see ALL THESE people already waiting for class to start. But she was on time, and that was really all that mattered. She completed a patented Phoebe Sliding Stop (tm) and banged elbows with Cece in the process.

"Good MORNING, Headmaster!" Phoebe grinned broadly at him as she rubbed her elbow vigorously. Funny boooooone. "Turn that frown upside down. Sir. You got to pick the time, place, and probably the weather." She peeked at the blue sky. "You should be so happy."

The hour of the lesson wasn’t a hardship to Carys, even if it meant she’d only managed a quick shower once she’d gotten back from her early morning run. The fact Eron still was providing breakfast for her had helped too, but the main thing was she was her usual self as she’d arrived at the lake for the first DADA lesson of term.

“Good morning, Headmaster Trent,” she called out, giving the man a bright smile even as she found a spot near her sister, giving smiles to her housemates as well as any of her friends who were there as well. At least the rain had cased for the time being, not that it would have stopped her. Impervius was a thing, after all, and she knew the spell quite well.

Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.

Bed Head Mark looked exactly like normal Mark. his hair only got messier the more he let it grow and it just made the rest of his attire look out of place even if he was dressed properly for this morning's lesson. he itched behind his ear and let out a small yawn before finding a spot.

Sure it was a tired yawn, but Mark would be ready for class. He just needed maybe 10 more minutes. He had to put a lot of work in making sure he didn't button his shirt on inside out.

"Good Morning, Headmaster." Mark muttered as audibly as possible under his breath still attempting to wake up. He shuffled himself into the slowly forming mass of other students.

It was certainly bright and early. Valencia didn't mind though. She was eager and ready to learn like the good little Ravenclaw she was.

She offered a small smile. "Good morning, Headmaster." she greeted.

She then took a spot amongst her classmates.

Good sleep had been accomplished. Maybe the workout time she had expected wasn't accomplished, but the good morning sappiness was definitely giving her good vibes about her day already. As she walked down towards the class site, which she loved that it was outside because of the mist, she slightly fixed her hair with a pin and checked her expression. Maybe a little too sleepy still, but when wasn't she?

Once she arrived, she smiled and greeted the headmaster "Good morning, Headmaster." Then she went to join her classmates.

8am early?????? Not in Cel's world. There were waaaaay too many things to be excited about and trouble to be getting into with Dez now that she was back at school. Sleeping in was not a priority.
Cel wasn't exactly eager to be sat in classes all day again, but at least she'd get to hang around with her pals during all of it. With her backpack stuffed with her trusted old football and most of the books she needed, Cel arrived at class. Her first class of her LAST YEAR, that was big, right?
"Hiya, Headmaster!" Cel nodded at the Headmaster and found herself a seat towards the back. Lets see what this is all about then.

Summer hadn't felt long enough when she was in the middle of it, but now that she was back at school it had felt too long. She missed lessons and getting to use her wand! That was really the only thing that had her well rested for such an early class.

"Good morning, Headmaster!" She settled at Cece's side, giving her a playful nudge as she grinned at the headmaster's..... back? She peered at the lake. Did he have plans for them with the lake today? Hm.

Merlin, if he could freeze this moment in time to relieve it continuously, he would. It was so serene out here. The calm was almost unreal and there was a twinge of guilt knowing he'd be disrupting it soon enough.

The sound of approaching footsteps was already doing that well enough and he turned to watch them approach.

“Good morning, Professor,” she greeted the headmaster. She put down her bag and decided to breathe in some fresh air while waiting for the lesson to begin.

Was he surprised that Morin was one of the first to make it? Not particularly. She'd never been a bad student and he didn't expect her to start here in her final year. It was a big one. The one before the leap into adulthood and the wider world. "Morning, Morin." It sorta rhymed, too.

She looked awake enough. It was good to know some had taken him seriously on getting some rest.

"Good morning, Headmaster," the third year said quietly, not altogether sure if he would hear her. He looked rather in his own thoughts and she wasn't about to disturb him further. Claudine shuffled off a bit so that she wouldn't wind up at the front of the hoard of students when they turned up. In any case, she was looking to keep out of sight for as much as she could.

Quite the subdued greeting this was. Malachi watched the Slytherin approach and put some distance between them. "Morning, Blaze." He replied, mildly. Piers had filled him in on the stunt with the cruppies and while he didn't approve of how they'd gone about it--owls worked, they carried messages just fine, and getting permission was the easiest way to keep out of trouble--the man was opting to let it go.

Finishing up the last drop of her milk she then placed it inside her bag to discard for later. She made sure she fixed herself properly; wiping her lips of any traces of the milk (if there are any). She walked closer and greeted Headmaster Trent with a soft smile. "Good morning, Headmaster" she spoke up and then joined the other students.

It was turning into a line of Slytherins, wasn't it? The Headmaster watched the Head Girl finish off the last of her breakfast--taking it with her to avoid being late, he assumed--before joining them in what was becoming a small huddle. Had she been the reason the Slytherins were already on time? He'd like to think so.

"Morning, Kim." Hopefully it all digested before they really got into things. Might be uncomfortable otherwise.

After gathering the necessary items for class, she put her bag on the floor. Today was going to be a good day.........or else.

"Morning Lindsey." Finally, a lion. He was beginning to grow concerned they'd altogether overslept. It simply wouldn't have done to go letting them have it before even introducing himself as their Head of House. Talk about the wrong foot to start off on.

The fact she wasn't drooping over sideways with eyes half closed was a bonus.

This one....this one was definitely awake. "Morning, Ryan. You're rather...chipper this morning." Was it the fresh air and the great outdoors? Perhaps he should take the students outside more often when they had 8 am classes. Was that the secret to waking them up or was it the unspoken threat of being thrown into the lake right there if they began to doze off?

It was something to look into.

One of the newer students. This was one of the most and least exciting parts of each new term. The names he would have to learn and...admittedly, the empty spaces where some used to be. It was definitely...quieter....

Gasp and utter shock, he was on time for the first lesson. There would be no pulling teeth and he wouldn't have to give him detention. This was something just short of a dream come true.

"Morning, Fuller. Nice to see you on time." Was it too much to hope he'd keep this up for the whole term? If Curtis behaved, why, it would be the greatest sort of miracle. The sort the Headmaster could get behind.

"I can see that." The Headmaster replied with an amused quirk of his lips as he watched the Hufflepuff air boxing. This one had either gotten a great night's sleep or was a morning person through and through. Or maybe he was just a DADA get your hands dirty sort of person.

Nettie was truly looking forward to getting this term underway. She already had a NEWT study schedule planned out, based on how her OWLs had gone, so she was READY. Her Ravenclaw was definitely coming out this term. Whoops.

You know what? He was starting to think he really underestimated his students. So far, they'd been showing up alert and some even looked happy to be here. It felt good, he wouldn't lie. The next in the bunch was Gladin, a wide grin on her face.

And there was Upstead. This one managed to get an amused smirk out of him as well, albeit for slightly different reasons. "Some....some may end up swimming, yes." She frowned and hung toward the back of the group, avoiding Blake even though he was usually the angel on her shoulder, and also avoiding Claudine, the devil on her shoulder and also everywhere else. Bernie squinted at the Headprofman with a soft, "Hullo, sir," and then finally threw her hand up to shield her eyes so she could squint at him properly.

Did he notice how good she was being? DID HE? She had IRONED HER ROBES before packing her trunk this year. HONESTLY.

...."Morning, Grantham." She'd come a far way from being Rainbow Truffles in the last year or so. This subdued Gryffindor was one he hardly knew but had a feeling he may have to get used to.

Admittedly, there was a part of him that felt guilt, a part that thought it may have been his doing, but then...if it was the only way to make her start acting like she had some sense, he couldn't say he was too apologetic. The thing with Grantham was, when she went out, she went all out and that usually ended terribly. Until she could find a balance, he was fine with subdued.

A second student to take particular interest in the lake. He had no doubt the others had noticed. It was, afterall, a big lake. They couldn't miss it from this distance if they tried. But Vance was the second to make an inquiry and the man did enjoy a good bout of curiosity from his students.

Even still, here she was. At least this class was outside. Nothing like a burst of sunlight to get somebody going. "Morning, Headmaster! What a nice day! Greeted by sunshine and fresh morning dew, the giant prefect walked casually towards the lake this morning, whistling a tune without a care in the world. Well, maybe he had NEWT anxiety but it was too nice of a morning to let that get to him now. Instead, he chose to focus on the here and now.

"Good morning, dear." Another whose name he would have to learn at some point. Depending on her personality, it probably wouldn't take more than a week...a month tops.

The Headmaster, who'd already turned at the approach of the first students, very clearly saw the First Year who'd gone to take a spot wordlessly. Another one, huh? And another First Year at that. This bunch was proving to be less than what he'd expected.

"Forgetting something?"

How many would he have to spell this out for?

”Good morning Kimmie” she smiled to the girl she smile to the young girl and stifling a yawn glanced around at everyone else.

"Morning, Moreau."

Plus side, at least she didn't look tired? At least she remembered her manners and said good morning? Were these First Years taking notes? He wasn't opposed to giving the entire year group detention if it came to that.

Oh, so it wasn't just a new kid thing. Would you look at that. This new kid had enough manners about him to offer a greeting. "Good morning." He returned. A pointed glance was spared at the earlier perpetrators. They'd better begin paying attention. He wouldn't go over this again.

"Good morning, Rose." He greeted the Hufflepuff Prefect. Was it officially time to be blanket proud of his student leaders? Regardless of how they may have been feeling on the inside, they'd managed to show up to his class looking prepared and awake. It was the right look for sure and he approved.

Speaking of...

"Good morning, Gunter." Was he going to be one of the students to end up in the lake? It was still a little early to tell but he'd been keeping an eye on him. The time for sleep was long time. It was about time to get to the lesson.

"Morning, Barrie." Walking upright, eyes open. Yep, that was all he needed of the girl for now. The lesson would grow in intensity and at that point it would be in her best interest to be alert but this was only the beginning.

"Hiya, Headmaster!" Cel nodded at the Headmaster and found herself a seat towards the back. Lets see what this is all about then.

"Morning, Myles. Chipper greeting you've got there." Not a complaint, not by a long shot. He liked the enthusiastic ones at 8 am. They were the ones who proved to the others that this could very much be done.

Were the others paying attention? THIS was how you acted at 8 am, clearly.

Oh joy, another in a perfectly chipper mood. The enthusiasm was slowly returning to the group. "Morning, Stark. Loving the energy."

It was great. There were some students who didn't let a little thing like 8 am stop them.

"Morning, Spencer." The boy's sleepiness was particularly jarring after Stark's entrance. He hoped he'd become more alert before they truly started...unless he planned to end up in the lake.

With the last of the students making there way closer and his watch warning that it was now 8, it was time to begin. Malachi stepped further from the lake and closer to the group of students. They didn't all look awake, but most of them seemed alert enough that he wasn't worried about the outcome of the lesson.

"Good morning, everyone. We're about ready to get class started. For those of you who don't know, my name is Malachi Trent. Headmaster Trent will do, however, in classes, I'm amenable to Professor as well." He'd been doing this long enough to know that there was always a bit of confusion when it came to greetings in his lessons, at least at the start of the year. Things mellowed out on their own soon enough.

"Unless stated otherwise, you can expect practical lessons when you attend. These are balanced out with enough theoretical lessons throughout the term to really cement everything we learn. Complaints won't get you anywhere. Yes, I know essays are boring. I'm equally aware reading assignments are the perfect way to fall asleep but they're necessary." Sometimes coffee, sometimes tea. Everything had its place.

"Right then, a quick question to get you all thinking and ease you back into the learning process. I'm sure you've all taken in our setting. For some, water is the most terrifying force on earth. It has the ability to cause destruction and conceal many hidden dangers. What risks often go hand in hand with bodies of water? Both magical and mundane are fine."

All answers welcome.

OOC: Hey guys! The class has officially begun. You can still join in, just pretend your charrie has been here the whole time. I mean, they could be late, too, if you really wanted but Trent doesn't recommend it. Ahem. I'll be moving us on again in about 24 - 28 hrs, give or take.

Jina watched the other students arrive while enjoying the fresh air outside. She returned Nina's smile, wondering if she made up with Eiji about what happened on the Hogwarts Express ... the Ravenclaw was certainly not about to mention it though.

She listened to the professor's explanation about the course, smiling to herself because she knew that she was one of the few students who preferred the theoretical portion to practical lessons. After a long relaxing summer break, she was ready to complete reading assignments and write essays again! At his question about risks associated with water, she glanced at the lake once and raised her hand.

"You can be attacked by Grindylows, which are really aggressive water demons," she said. Weren't there some in the school lake???

Charlie smiled, she was glad that Trent had noticed her eagerness to learn, but her lack of eagerness to possibly be getting wet in the lake this early in the morning. Glancing around the area she wondered what others thought as the question was asked. She herself didn’t mind water but she only liked it when she could choose to go into water.

Destruction by water, it happened more than people knew. Raising her hand, “It goes where it wants regardless of what’s in the way. Floods push the water where it wants how it wants, a door wont stop water from coming in.” She also knew drowning was a danger of water but she didn’t want to be THAT person this early in the morning. But Jina had mentioned the Grindylows and she had jumped right in but Charlie would pass on that type of information.

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

The class was starting to fill as more and more students arrived. When Cole appeared, Naya laughed at his question. ”No, not really. I had a hard time getting to sleep for some reason.” Too excited for the next day’s classes maybe? “I’m awake now though”, she said truthfully. Later on in the day might be a different story.

Now, however, it was time for class to begin. Naya turned her attention to the Headmaster. He wasted no time in getting things started. When the first question was posed, she raised her hand. The first thing that came to her mind was drowning. Considering that this was Defense Against the Dark Arts class, she decided to go in a different direction, “Well there are many creatures that live in different bodies of water. Some are harmless and others not so much. Where I come from there are sharks, alligators and other creatures that can injure or kill you.”

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Trent didn't seem to have much to say to her today. Quite truthfully, she had expected to be in trouble for the crups based on something Fuller-Thompson had mentioned even though she had only good intentions. She half squinted at the Head before retreating. Was he planning to give her detention soon?

The Slytherin was happy standing by herself as much as you can and ignoring everyone. Or almost everyone. Cole got a small smile of acknowledgement and was actually considering going to stand by him when he turned to Naya.

Oh.

Claudine was going to pretend that didn’t hurt; the smile slipped off of her face quickly and she averted her eyes towards the Lake instead. Of course Cole was going to spend his time with her in every lesson. She didn’t know how long she stared out there but soon things were getting started.

Hmmm.

Risks that go with bodies of water?

Claudine thought before raising her hand. “One can stumble upon Merpeople’s dwelling and they might not take too well to sudden intruders.’’

There were so many things that came to mind in regards to water and its dangers. While Drew was a decent swimmer, he preferred to do his swimming in a pool rather than a lake or a beach. Like the Headmaster had said, there were many hidden dangers. He raised his hand slowly, "There's the issue of underwater currents, that can't be seen from the surface so you don't know you're in danger until you've got into the water." His friend Noel from Beaubaxtons could tell them first hand what that had been like. It had taken six of them to get him out. "Sometimes even the strongest of swimmers find themselves in trouble." He was really hoping that they were not going into the lake in this lesson.
