It was bright and early on the morning after the feast. A fresh, 8 am class as the Headmaster had warned just the night before. How many had taken him seriously and sought to get a good night's sleep was yet to be seen but Trent himself had gone to bed at a decent hour and felt...well...great.
The rain had come and gone, the grass was newly watered, the sun was up and offering a bit of warmth in the Scottish country side. It was the perfect set up and left the man more excited to begin the day's lesson.
Hard to believe, but somehow he'd missed teaching over the summer. Missed springing surprises on them and watching them react--quick on their feet or entirely malfunctioning.
Malachi stood facing the lake with his back turned to the castle. He inhaled deeply, enjoying the early morning while he still could. Before they got down to business. The man felt perfectly at peace. A glance down at his watch told him the students would be arriving soon.
Well rested, he hoped. On time, he hoped even more. The absence of a door to drag them out was no guarantee things would be any better.
OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours
The sudden utterance of the spell spurred the horse toward the boy who hadn’t backed up. It knocked him out of the way and continued running. This one didn’t head for the lake, in fact it was heading in the opposite direction.
Perhaps if he thought up a strategy instead of casting spell after spell...
Cole started second guessing his move the minute the spell had left his wand. It was supposed to give him the upper hand over the horse but it only made the horse angrier and. He didn’t have time to back up before the horse was all over him, knocking him to the ground before it continued running.
Ears ringing and feeling like the air had been knocked out of his lungs Cole lied on the ground for several moments, trying to gain his breath and not feel the aches. His moves so far we’re epic failures which his current position was clear evidence of. With some force of energy the blond youth got up on his feet. He needed a distraction. Maybe dangling a carrot could work?
Before Cole could test his new idea out they were given new instructions to group up for the main event. It didn’t give him confidence to hear their headmaster fear for their lives. He thought about joining Naya, but then decided to try something different and headed over to where Isla, Bernie and Avalon we’re standing. "Hey girls, I hope it’s okay if i join the purple gang?"Still aching from the horse experience he asked "So how shall we take down the kelpie? With distraction and force or?"

Claudine was not impressed. In fact, she was quite annoyed that her attempts to be her best had been thwarted by a wooden, animated horse of all things. She glared at it as it came to a standstill, her sleeve still caught in its teeth. The girl didn’t hesitate to cast a neat Severing Charm on the sleeve. This was something petty; the Blazes could afford an entire replacement robe and then some. She tossed one last glare at the horse then shifted her attention to Trent.
Right. No touching. This was not CoMC. But when she heard that there was group work next, Claudine inwardly groaned. Why, Trent, Why? Ugh. There were so many persons she wanted to avoid...A quick recon told her that team Green was best so far so she drifted towards Islay and Kimberly. “Hi. So, do some of us provide a distraction while the others try to get the bridle on?’’ the third year asked, wanting to get this over with ASAP.

So...that had happened. Um.
Eiji was not exactly well practiced with the spell he had used, but he certainly had never imagined that the horse would just be swallowed up by the ground like that. Entirely. His vision had been that just the legs would be and maybe a bit of the torso but...well...his horse was incapacitated in any case soooooooooo the seventh year was going to call THAT a victory and just sort of meander away from the whole scene with his now very asymmetrical robes.
It had been necessary and not in an attempt to make any sort of fashion statement.
Listening to the next set of instructions, Eiji once again found himself sighing internally. He didn't want to defend the school. He just wanted to stay away from the water which would also keep him away from any kelpies and therefore problem solved. Ah if only...
Shoving his hands into his pockets, the Slytherin debated which team to join and scrutinized each of it's present members. Typically he wouldn't even give it a second thought when he saw either of two very specific females on one of the teams...but today he was being driven by a slightly different urge. Remember the rhetorical question about who would blindly hop on to the back of a random horse and then get themselves killed? Yeah. That.
So he would be joining the team that Bernadette was on....thus he sluggishly made his way over to the forming group and merely bowed his head to acknowledge that he would be joining them.

She DID it! SHE DID IT! The blonde raised her hands triumphantly, a grin on her face as she looked around. Had anyone else SEEN that? So cool. She was feeling really proud over here. She was just going to ignore the part about her horse being distracted by some other kid getting nearly eaten, though. That part just brought the WHOLE vibe down.
Looking around for a group once it was time to switch things up, Cecelia decided partnering with some older kids was her best bet. Two of her housemates and an older slytherin with pretty hair were standing nearby, so the blonde headed over to them JUST in time to hear talk of strategy. Hey, she knew a thing or two about strategy! She used it all the TIME in quidditch!
"Hi. Cecelia here. I think we have to be quick, have some sort of distraction, and let the person who is best at spells do the bridle part." She ticked off ALL three things on her fingers and offered the group a smile.
The sense of achievement? It was all gone the moment the Headmaster Trent started speaking again. So, she had done it all wrong?
Irritated, she looked around - wondering what team to join, all the while trying to figure out what could she do different this time. If she were to focus more on strategy, she wondered if she could apply what she had initially thought of when the professor had asked them what would they do if they encountered one.
Distraction. Yes.
Nodding more to herself, because obviously she was now thinking too hard to hopefully get this right - she moved to join the nearest team.
“Missa” She introduced herself. “And I think Cecilia is right. Lets divide ourselves into ones who distract, and ones who takes care of the bridle” She really didn’t want to leave this class with the sinking feeling she had now.

He had a feeling the horse might fly towards him so he was ready to jump out of the way when it came barrelling towards him, bridle still in its jaws. With the words of the Professor though, he took a step away, still keeping one eye on the wooden horse, he just listened to the instructions.
Hearing that they were going to be split up into teams, the prefect just headed towards one of the teams at random, not really paying too much attention to the team he was on (Team Orange: Naya, Noah, Nina, Cecelia and this goofball) .
Catching the end of Cecelia’s plan and the fact that she actually managed to get her bridle on, he just nodded in agreement before saying ”I agree. How about we have one or two people distract at the front with one bridle and then the rest just come from behind as an extra distraction? He won’t know where to look so maybe that’ll give the person with the bridle a chance?” He knew full well that technically wasn’t how it worked but still, it was worth a shot. Unless someone else had a better idea. He was down to listen too.
”Anyone else have any ideas?” he called over his shoulder as he headed off to grab a bridle for their group.

So WWW wanted them to split into teams? He heard his housemate whom had been quite friendly at the feast create a team. "Sign me up, Naya! I'm with you."

Nina let out a SHRIEK when the bridle AND the horse came flying her way. Fortunately, it was slow enough that she was able to move out of its path of TOTAL destruction. But it was still very scary. She had nearly died. She needed a better strategy. Clearly. The Slytherin let out a huff, blowing her hair out of her face and flattened her skirt as she tried to think this through. In doing so, there was another wooden horse CHARGING over, aGH!
This was absolute chaos. Nina needed silence to think and she was not getting it! Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately), Headmaster Trent called an end to the activity. She hung her head as their Headmaster lectured them. She had made a few unwise decisions, that itself was quite evident.
When it was time to pick teams, Nina looked around at the sorry group of students gathered around. She needed to strategize. There’d be no way she would join a team with Grantham. She had shared some concerning answers throughout the lesson and Nina did not want to end up Kelpie breakfast today. Orange it was. She walked over to the two already standing together (Noah and Naya).
”I’m Nina,” because they hadn’t formally met yet. ”We’ll need a strategy if we want to win.” Not that she cared about winning, but she would rather spend her time studying for NEWTs than in a safety seminar. So. Maybe she did care about winning today.

Ok. The group was starting to form. The first to arrive was Naya’s housemate Noah. He was followed by Nina, Cecelia, Missa and Ewan. “Hey guys. I’m Naya”. For those who didn’t know. Looking over her group mates, she wondered if any of them had actually managed to bridle their horse and if so how. She could offer ideas on what not to do. She had a lot of experience with failing the task.
As the others started to talk, Naya listened to their suggestions. “I think distraction is definitely a good idea. These horses are smart. They are not just going to sit still and wait for the bridle.” When the suggestions were made to spilt into groups, Naya nodded. “What if both groups have bridles, that way we have a better chance of catching it.” She had learned her lesson about not going after the second bridle. “This way we always have one group on offense.”

Okay so after the headmaster had finished talking to him about him just standing still, seriously it worked for Lions and they were absolutely the most furious animal from a muggle, he had been so upset he hadn't even thought about much and had just done the mini activity like he had been told.
Tom decided to join the Purple team, he walked over to his team and just listened to what the others were saying, was this going to be a scary task? and if so could he close his eyes and pray.

Heath kept his wand arm locked, his dark eyes darting from the bridle to the horse. Merlin, he hoped this worked! If it didn't, he was in for a world of hurt! He braced for impact as the horse neared, and… it stopped.* Whoa, he actually did it! He took on a kelpie (not a real one, but that didn't matter right now) and won! HA! I hope you enjoyed the show, you dumb horse, he thought, taking one last look at the wooden horse.
For the first time since class started, Heath felt like he'd done something right. Who would've guessed his approach would be one of the few not getting criticized in front of everyone? He listened intently to the next set of instructions, relieved to learn they wouldn't be facing a real kelpie, though the mention of group work diminished his newly found confidence. Given the choice, he'd take the kelpie! At least he knew what it would do - anything it could to kill him. How a group of strange people would react to him was anyone's guess!
As scared as Heath was of what the other students might do if he tried to join, he was more scared of what Trent would do if he didn't! He looked around, eyes scanning for the group with the fewest people. Team green it is! Okay, Heath, you can do this! he thought, taking a deep breath to steel his nerve as he approached. Don't stammer, don't make any Star Wars references. Just be cool…
"Hey, mind if I join?" he asked the trio of girls (Islay, Kimberly & Claudine). He remembered Claudine, but he'd never talked to the two older girls before. "I'm Heath, by the way," he added.
He nodded approvingly at Claudine's idea. "Good idea," he said, "and I think I know how to distract it." The question was would anybody be willing to listen to him? He was the only boy here, and two of the girls (Islay and Kimberly) were older than him. They might not like being told what to do by a younger student, but it was worth a try! "If one of us acts weak and defenceless, the kelpie may see that person as an easy target and come to us… The rest of us should spread out - it probably won't come if we're all bunched together - and when it comes, sneak up and cover it from the sides and back. Whoever's at the back should try casting the placement charm first, with the people at the sides on standby to cast if the first attempt goes wrong. If we surround it from all sides, odds are at least one of us will be in the right position to guide the bridle…"
Heath blinked in disbelief as his voice trailed off. Had he really just said all that? Look at him, coming up with a plan of attack like a little Resistance general! Part of him was proud of that, but mostly he was worried what the others would think. Would think it was a dumb idea? Or worse, would they be mad at him for speaking up at all? What if they thought he was trying to be bossy? Oh Merlin, he didn't want to find out!

They had quite a team here! He knew Naya already but took her cue and made sure to introduce himself to the others. He gave them all a little wave paired with a friendly smile. "Noah."
He listened to the group start to talking, thinking through the potential plan. He had seen Cecelia masterfully get the bridle on and that was more than what he had done so he'd go along with her.
"I like the distraction idea. It's a solid plan. It seemed to work for some people before," agreed Noah before replaying Naya's suggestion in his head. He spoke aloud to check his own understanding that he was hearing her correctly. "So both groups would have an extra bridle just in case?"
"I can be the distraction in the front?" he volunteered.

Ivy was beaming at her success and already planning on what she was going to write about in her letter to Mum and Dad later. She'd outsmarted a magical wooden horse on her second try!
Which sounded funny when she put it like that, but that was okay!
What wasn't okay was the wildly dancing horse coming right for her.
She dodged out of the way juuuust in time to avoid being trampled right into the ground. And then the horses disappeared and...they were moving on to another activity. This time with teams and more realistic kelpies.
Neat!
She definitely wanted to join Team Purple because it was her favorite color, buuuut...the Headmaster had said the teams needed to be even, and it looked like that one had lots of people already, so... Green team then? Yeah, green was a good color too!

She yelped and jumped backwards into the water splashing up her robes, before the thing also disappeared with the rest. Oh. Okay. So now they were going to spread out into teams? Evenly matched teams at that. She could see people already grabbing their spots with different teams, and she watched for a moment quickly calculating the current numbers. Team Green seemed the lowest currently, but thankfully it also had Islay.
Smiling over at the other girl, she nodded at the question. "Would super love to." TEAM GREEN, FOR THE WIN.

She walked over to the group in time to hear them laying out strategy ideas. And one boy already offering to be the bait distraction.
"I think that sounds like a good plan!" Certainly worth a try at least! Distractions definitely seemed to worked on the wooden horses, so it'd probably be good on keeping the kelpies from avoiding a bridle too. "And don't worry," she added, giving Blake a smile, "I'm sure we'll be able to bridle it, but even if we somehow don't, the Headmaster is here to back us up, yeah?" She was trying to be reassuring, though whether it actually was was up to the Slytherin boy to decide. She thought it was though, 'cause obviously nothing really bad would happen since they weren't real real kelpies. The Headmaster wouldn't let something happen to them during his class anyway, especially on the first day back. That would be embarrassing!

This was certainly an interesting team they had going. She hadn't been paying too much attention to anyone else during their practice, but if she recalled correctly, only Bernie and she had gotten the bridle on successfully. Trying not to be too pessimistic about their odds, she smiled at her new teammates. Poor Cole....he looked like he had just gotten the wind knocked out of him. They were certainly going to look like a disheveled bunch once this was all over. "I think distraction is our best strategy here. Brute force just seems to make them more angry." And she did not want to take any chances with these kelpies, which were much more realistic than the wooden horses. "I originally thought that a few of us could try to distract it or lure it away while the others try to stealthily put the bridle in place, but that's super dangerous. I don't want anyone getting hurt." So much could go wrong with that plan, and she really didn't feel like getting trampled by a kelpie today. But if nobody had any better ideas, it might have to do.

She had been trying to get a new bridle, but saying the words had brought the one closest to them and the one attached to the horse, which was now coming at them and she just ducked when it was.... gone. Looking around she sighed and then looked to the headmaster, "Thanks"
Why did she always feel dumber after this class. All her other classes she felt like she got over the years but this one was the hardest for her. She was never good at dueling because she never wanted to hurt anyone and clearly she was horrible at protecting since she didn't even do a great job with a fake horse. She gave the two third years an apologetic look and hoped maybe they found someone better for the job.
Listening to the headmaster made her want to sneak back to the castle and forget the rest of the lesson. She would want to pet them or touch them, she always got distracted and interested when creatures were involved. Her head wasn't in classes as it was at the moment, but she didn't leave she just stayed and listened. Soon after the instructions Chloe went to join the purple team.
He was dead. He was alive buT he was DEAD. He was dead. RIP Kale Trent. He had lived a short life and hadn't accomplished any of the things he had wanted to accomplish. But there it was. He was dead.
The Gryffindor closed his eyes and waited for the sweet release of death.
Until his Dad had vanished the wooden horse. He SAAAAAAAAAAHAAAVED him. He wasn't dead cuz his Dad hadn't let him die. Maybe he did love him after all.
The third year scrambled to his feet, once he was certain he wasn't gun die, and tumbled over to the Headmaster. He threw his arms around him. Squishing him. It was brief, but full of appreciation. For the not letting him die thing. Y'know. That.
He didn't linger on his hug and skirted to find a team after the instructions. The purple team, apparently. He waved to all of his peers. "Heya guys. What's the plan?"

Charlie absolutely noticed that someone got a bridle on the wooden horse. She watched closely in awe after her own horse had taken off on her. She felt her face blush knowing that Headmaster Trent had likely seen her get brushed off by the wooden horse.
Oh teams. That means she may have a chance at success and she liked success. She heard the girl who had caught one choose green. Oh team green it was. She heard that one of them would be the bait and distract while the others could possibly get the other one tamed. She was liking the sounds of this so far.

Excellent.
More were joining the team. While this would usually irritate Claudine, she wasn’t going to let that get the best of her today. Her irritation had already been taken by that stupid horse. “I think you’d fit right in,’’ she assured Heath. Ugh. Blake Ryan. Why couldn’t he have gone off to join his girlfriends? Well, she’d try to ignore his existence as usual. Ivy and Charlie got a nod of welcome before Claudine eyed all of Team Green. So, who was going to be calling the shots here? A positive note was that most of them seemed to accept her suggestion of distracting the kelpie.
“Heath has a good plan. I think it might work, especially if we have multiple persons backing up each other in terms of fitting the bridle. So… Team Distraction? Blake.Obviously“Heath? Ivy?’’ She looked at them for confirmation. “Team Bridle Fitters… myself. Islay and Kimberly? Charlie?” Look, she wasn’t ordering them around, just giving the suggestions which was why she checked with the team members first.
“If everyone is okay with the plan, we should get started. Remember what Trent said: most spells won’t work against kelpies like Shield Charms.’’ Claudine began moving cautiously towards the green coloured kelpie.

Nina looked over when Cecelia joined their group. She gave the younger girl a small smile in greeting because she was one of Eiji’s little friends or something like that… Right? His family had so many connections to people at this school, it was difficult to keep track. And when Missa joined their group as well, Nina started to feel slightly more at ease about the task in mention. Their group was shaping up rather nicely.
”I agree,” she nodded as Missa spoke, looking over at Ewan as he joined in and gave his two knuts on the matter of strategy. Naya and Noah basically just repeated strategies that were already shared, and Nina wasn’t entirely sure why they were still going over this as it was all a proper waste of time now that they had their strategy set.
With Noah volunteering to distract out front, Nina decided to divvy up the rest of the tasks on her own so they could get started. ”Excellent. Cecelia, maybe you could distract out front with Noah,” she was the youngest in the group and she had quite the imagination. Nina knew this because she payed attention when people shared their answers in class.
”Ewan and Naya, you two can distract from the other side… And while you’re doing that, Missa and I can take care of the wand work.” Did anyone have objections? ”Let’s get to work.”

Heath was surprised his plan was so quickly accepted, but he was even more surprised when another boy (Blake) joined the group and volunteered to be the "victim" before Heath had the chance to do so himself. Well, this wasn't part of the plan! He was supposed to be the bait; that way nobody else would have to get hurt if his strategy didn't work!
Before Heath could try to talk Blake out of offering himself as bait, one of his younger housemates (Ivy) and Charlie joined them, and Claudine was making suggestions on how to divide into teams and… it took him a moment or two to process everything going on. "Right," he replied, nodding at Claudine. "I'll help with the distraction. I'm an actor, and I'm rubbish at wandwork; I'd just slow the bridle fitters down."
And for that matter… "Who's good at casting spells?"Heath asked the group as a whole. "We should probably have our strongest casters take the back. That way, we'll have a better chance of getting the bridle fitted on the first try… before the kelpie realizes what's happening."
Heath turned to Blake, who was already on the ground. "Great start," he said with an encouraging smile, "but I think the horses might know something's up if you're already on the ground when they turn up. How about if you preyend to be injured, like you've got a broken leg or something? I'll come help you but act all flustered and panicky, like I don't know what I'm doing." Was anybody else joining the distraction team? Just in case, he added, "Anybody else helping with the distraction, act like you're trying to help Blake but don't know what to do. Pretend to panic, bumble, stare off into space.. whatever you can think of to appear an easy target to the kelpie."
He got into position to "help" Blake when the time came, concentrating on getting into character. Okay, showtime!

"And me!" Phoebe was feeling resilient, in spite of her near death experience, but not resilient enough to be on a team with her fellow-abject-terror-teammates. So Orange was the way to go... and it helped that the cool and bossy Nina was being both cool and bossy. This was going to go well. Give in to the seventh years and avoid certain death. Maybe if she'd let Chloe do her thing, she wouldn't have come so close to the hooves of that wooden horse.
"I'm going to distract too. I'm not very good with my wand." Or anything, it happened. Phoebe kept her wand firmly away and darted toward the orange kelpie. "COME EAT MEEEEE, BIG GUY."
Well, they were looking like they had a pretty good group going so far now. And Kimberly was very happy to see that in her moment of spacing out, the others had already come up with a decent plan in order to take on the Kelpie. Distraction was good, she had seen quite a few people get that to work with the wooden horses. But the biggest thing here was, she was assuming there was a difference between the wooden horses who while ended up dangerous, weren't as murderous as the Kelpies could be. She'd managed to get her bridle on by just appearing uninterested. She was going to hazard a guess that would not work on the Kelpie.
Hearing the plan, she had no objections really to the idea of distraction -- looking weak would also be best since the demon horse would be focused on wanting to take them to the murky depths anyways -- but what she wasn't quite on board with was the plans of attack from behind. The bridle needed to go on the horses front end, and from the back she was concerned they might not be able to get a good enough angle to get the proper positioning.
"I think we definitely have a good idea going here. What if we hid a bridle and one of our spellcasters in the Distraction group though? That way we have the Kelpie covered from all angles, as we do need to be able to get a clear shot to the face." She glanced at the already determined teams and gave a small nod towards Ivy. "I think to be on the safe side we should hide a bridle on Ivy as well. She was able to get one over her wooden horse."
But otherwise, she was good. So she cautiously began to move towards the Kelpie, following after Claudineas well while the others took their positions. She was decent enough at spell casting, so she figured she could take one of the side positions and also throw in a distraction if things started looking poor for the ones in front.

Well THAT was an adventurous task he'd given them. Tavie was winded and THRILLED to be doing more. She loved this! It made her want to ride horses after. But for right now...
Teams? Hmm...
She counted the kids and counted who was already in what groups. Looked like... GREEN NEEDED A STARK.
SPOILER!!: GREEN. OCTAVIA MAKES EIGHT.

Right. No touching. This was not CoMC. But when she heard that there was group work next, Claudine inwardly groaned. Why, Trent, Why? Ugh. There were so many persons she wanted to avoid...A quick recon told her that team Green was best so far so she drifted towards Islay and Kimberly. “Hi.

Islay was so happy to see how well everyone else was working out on their kelpies, even if she had well…failed? Hilariously. When Kimmie walked over she just smiled over to the Hufflepuff, ”of course! We’ll be awesome” she grinned at her, and even smiled brightly as she saw the young Slytherin girl walking over.
Islay looked over to Claudine and smiled, ”hey – nice try out there – and I think that is a brilliant idea, distractions would be smart.” with that being said Islay used her wand to summon her notepad and began writing down all of the ideas…after all she wanted this to work out well.
When the ravenclaw boy walked over Islay just grinned wasn’t he….her dormmates sister? she wondered and just shrugged her shoulder giving him a grin ”I don’t mind – I’m open to anyone joining” she smiled happily as she began jotting down the names of everyone working together on her notepad as well. ”we have to keep an eye on whoever is pretending to be defenseless, like…yeah maybe wands at the ready at all times so we can easily cast relashio and slice a sleeve if we must? or any part of clothing the horse decided to grab…or hair, anything really except bodies – that would be bad.
When Blake walked up Islay grinned over to the guy ”hi everyone, I’m Islay – like the island in the Hebrides…” she smiled over to all of them and continued to tap her pencil onto the paper sureenough there was a newcomer. ”Hey nice work out there Grimm,” Islay grinned at the girl even giving her a thumbs up. CHARLIE, aww she got a little wave as she joined them.
Claudines words got a little grin, ”right most shield charms won’t work as Headmaster Trent said – “ oh they were doing this – a part of her was panicking as she didn’t want anyone to die. literally, they could die.. ”if any of us feel like we’re pinned down or in real danger send sparks from your wands and we could change positions – y’know like quick maneuvering and distractions so that we can all stay alive.” Islay had to agree with most of what everyone was saying – especially Kimmie’s words on hiding a bridle on Ivy.
”you okay with carrying an extra bridle Ivy?...” she paused for a second ”we could always do something and have multiple people with bridles incase the kelpie tries snacking on it?” she offered, looking round at everyone as she tucked the note pad away.
Plan Elements Distraction Act defenseless??? (possibly dangerous?) Hide bridle on ivy
The young Stark got a little wave as she walked over and joined team green. "hey welcome aboard, -- i'd offer to do either myself. I mean, i was wretched earlier i just turned the darn thing off" she said with a half laugh and grinned at everyone. "i think we're gonna be good! we have a solid plan"

Jumping jarveys was it dance class already?
Without meaning to, the horse began moving wildly about, its legs taking it all about. This was perhaps il-advised as the horse nearly trampled on several of the boy's classmates in this uncontrolled dancing.
Excuse me, coming through, s'cuse me coming through.
It was on a war path, knocking into several students.
Just when she got the bridle in hand and was about to use her wand to place it over the wood horse's mouth, Carsyn turned around and the horse was gone .... ??? Uhhhh?? Did she get bonus points for sending the horse away without needing to harm the demon creature?
Oh wait, there it was.
Moving after the horse, she quickly flicked her wand at the bridle and a swift "Fixate" to move it onto the horse's snout. Hopefully would work.... Only another horse swiftly moved through and caused Carsyn to jump out of its way and she lost focus on her own so she was unable to see if she'd successfully managed to bridle her horse or not. Not that it mattered, since it seemed they were moving on...
This had quickly devolved into a complete mess, one the Headmaster was honestly done looking at. Bless the students who'd realized they needed a strategy beyond "let me just aim this at the horse and it will surely stand still and accept it". They had managed to bridle their horses.
Others had too but given his whole spiel on other spells not working on actual kelpies, he was quite disappointed they opted to use other spells for this exercise. They'd have learned nothing by the end if they thought stunning and slowing kelpies were an actual option in the real world and he didn't know where to begin with that.
"Let's call this a wrap." He vanished the remaining horses, relieved no one else could now nearly get themselves killed. "And let me just....we do not accio things that are attached, to bigger and heavier things." He didn't think that needed further explanation. There had been four students who'd been demonstration enough of what could happen. "Let that be the last time any of you attempt anything like that." Whether it was kelpies or anything else in life. That safety seminar was definitely happening. He'd make sure of it.
"As I mentioned earlier, the way to defeat a kelpie is to get a bridle over its mouth. As I also said, most other spells will not work against a kelpie. They are demons. Spirits." Looking to everyone who stunned or otherwise cast at the creatures to get bridles on. "Wooden horses aside, you've simply bought it more time to kill you. Don't do it." All the neat parlour tricks they'd done helped some of them this lesson, but it had as easily backfired on others. "Shield charms are ineffective. Touching them," Looking at all of you who thought to pet or otherwise be in contact with these things, "Is a very bad idea. Just a touch and you're attached. You're attached and they drag you down into the murky depths." He'd said all this before, he had. It was clear many chose not to listen because they would "just put a bridle on it and be okay". He hoped now they saw that kelpies were living (sorta), moving creatures who would not wait around to be bridled.
"I'm hesitant to be moving on but in the next portion you'll be in teams and less likely to die by that virtue. Get into groups. I'll need three evenly distributed teams. Purple, orange and green. You will be up against kelpies next. Not real ones, but they do imitate them rather closely. The school is under attack. It is your job to capture these kelpies and save us." So everything they'd chosen to ignore before...they may wanna remember now.
Malachi vanished the bucket of bridles then produced three of a bigger size, featherlight so anyone could easily cast on them, first years included. "In your teams, you will work on a plan, a strategy, and you will take down your kelpie. First to take it down effectively, can choose if they attend the safety seminar."
With that said, he raised his wand once more. The water in the lake began to shift and bubble. In seconds, three large kelpies rose from its depths in menacing form. Each took on the colour of the different teams. They were nothing like the wooden horses, much bigger and more true to form. "Begin."
OOC: Time for the final activity, y'all. I've had a blast reading the trials so far Now, get into three teams and please title your posts with your teams colour to make it easier for all. Try to keep the teams even. I'll be playing the kelpies so please do not RP any actions on their behalf. Class will end on May 12 @ 11:59 pm EST. Good luck and have fun!
Three teams to take down a kelpie. No red, so orange or purple would be a close second, to which Carsyn quickly made a count of each of the groups and while her mentee was over in team purple, they did have one extra person ... which meant team orange it was. There was already a pretty even distribution of younger and older students in each of the three teams at quick glance, so she should be alright.
Approaching the group, she frowned when she overheard Phoebe. "Calling the demon big guy won't be effective, nor will telling it to come at you." Perhaps she needed to hold a whole class for these third years, not just mentor Bernie?

Avalon spent a few more moments pondering all of the alternatives. These kelpies were not something they could afford to mess around with. And she didn't want to be the cause of anyone getting injured on their first class back at Hogwarts. "Honestly, I think we need a couple of distractions planned out in case the first one doesn't work." Now that she thought of it, it would be incredibly stupid to have a bunch of them try to distract the kelpie, only to have the plan fail, and to have then wasted all of their human resources. "And we should probably have at least two or three people in charge of the bridle, in case the first person isn't able to do it." Hopefully not because they were incapacitated or being dragged into the lake.
"The rest of us can be on distraction duty. What if we set up a sort of a triangle of distractions, and try to trap the kelpie in the middle of it? We could have some of us on the grass here, some of us over by those bushes, and then someone throw a bunch of rocks to make a commotion in the water. The distractions would have to be like a chain reaction, to totally catch the kelpie's attention. Then, while it's confused, the two people on bridle duty can slip it on." Whew. It was a complicated plan, and it all hinged upon the kelpie actually falling for it. Which was doubtful. "How does that sound?" Avalon asked the group. If anybody had any other ideas, she'd be happy to hear them. But she couldn't really think of a better solution. She'd leave it up to them which positions they wanted to take up.
