As you move into the Transfiguration lesson today, you will notice that the usual moses baskets that Professor Eris has had on hand so far through term are at the side of the room as usual. Please take one for your Muggle Studies baby, so that there will be minimal disruption to today’s seminar.
The table’s are set up in pairs and as such the Professor has helpfully written on the board;

Afterall, if everyone who is taken part is co-parenting, there may not be anyone free to sit with those who do not take Muggle Studies…. But if that is the case, never fear. He had already spoken to Professor Schmoe, and he had several spare babies that could be used for the purpose of today’s lesson. It wouldn’t affect their grade in his class, it was simply another learning tool.
As you look past the blackboard, you will see that the Professor himself is cradling a baby who is burrowed in her cozy fleecey blanket. He looked at home, holding her weight easily with one hand as he rested on the edge of his desk ready to welcome you all in for your lesson. Having had breakfast and your first classes already, he’s hoping you’re bright eyed and bushy tailed. Yes? Good.
Come on in, class will start at 10am sharp.
OOC: Hello!! Welcome back for your second Transfiguration lesson. Apologies for the lack of proper warning, work caught up on me. <3 I’ll be moving us on after I get home from work tomorrow, so around 18 hours time (5-6pm GMT on Sunday).
Come on in, find a partner or make it clear that your character doesn’t have a “kiddo” of their own. If they do, let us know their names cause Carwyn and I are curious

It was building again, building, building.
"No," was all he said at last (sounding just as tired and dead inside as he felt and looked) though he felt that that much should have been obvious. If he had found a way, he would have been employing it. Kaiser certainly wasn't listening to the crying for fun - it wreaked absolute havoc with his headaches - but the thing just never stopped. He was certain he'd ended up with one that had a defective crying mechanism or something.
To Eris' suggestion, however, Kaiser found himself more amenable. "Yes... yes, I think I will," he said, sounding somewhat distracted and faraway, pushing his chair back rather suddenly and lifting the fake baby from the moses basket. "I will be back..." He let the unfinished sentence hang in the air, not wishing to commit himself to returning within the next few minutes, or even before the end of the lesson.
... Yes, best just... leave it at that. Kaiser shouldered his school bag, as well as the bag of baby supplies, and walked straight out without another word, bringing the squalling Bambino with him.
SPOILER!!: Eiji

Only the millisecond he heard that scream coming from his enchanted baby doll, Eiji felt as though his skin were just going to crawl right off his bones. He could barely even hear Missa when she said his name and even less so as she questioned the professor of his intentions of the lesson as another baby doll somewhere was joining in the chorus of crying. He wished their screams had been loud enough to drown out Professor Eris voice as he addressed Eiji's girlfriend in an equally, if not more so, haughtily tone. That had not been what Missa had been asking and Eiji felt a real urge to tell the professor off for questioning his girlfriend's observational skills and intelligence.
Truth be told, Eiji had had the same question. Seeing as they were required to sit with someone with a baby doll and if neither had one between the pair of them...go collect one of the infernal things. Was there any relief when Kaiser and that one Ravenclaw girl were given the option of leaving? Not in the least. It felt like a circus rather than a lesson and he was not feeling charitable in the least.
"....no thank you, sir," he said stiffly to the request for him to find himself a seat. Even if the Slytherin knew of the professor's intentions for the lesson, it was unlikely he would be sticking around. This was just not conductive to his learning and he would rather be surrounded by French speakers right now than here.
He knew what babies required. He had helped his mum care for the triplets when they came home and even helped a little with Rebecca during her infancy. Diapers, gauze, lotions and oils for their skin after baths, formula in the case of the triplets to give mum a break from nursing...there were a lot of essentials to be had - though he was inclined to offer up none of them.
So when Kaiser walked out of the room, Eiji followed him. Hopefully he could make up whatever work he missed with a remedial assignment later. His education was not going to take a back seat to some enchanted baby dolls and that was, dramatically, how it felt right now. He would likely go have a chat with his Head of House about this or, if he was still feeling salty by the time he reached the staircases, Headmaster Trent himself.
SPOILER!!: Missa

His answer was however very disappointing because he wasn't really answering her question, was he? He was also not showing any signs of this not being about the babies. The crying dolls would be around, and so will the demented looking parents. Honestly, how was Professor Schmoe expecting the students to study other subjects when they were clearly not getting any sleep and busy changing nappies. Or how did Professor Eris consider it fair to subject students who weren't part of this assignment with the same nonsense. Before she could point it out however, she noticed Kaiser getting up too - and looking like he was completely out of it.
She sighed, and pulled her bag closer to her shoulder, as she turned around to leave. "Have a good day, professor," she added, before leaving right behind Eiji.
Carwyn watched the way he stood, the way he … well, he didn’t want to say that he was checked out -- but it truly seemed that way. Perhaps, he would need to keep an eye on him. ”When you return, simply open the door and come in - you will not be penalised for returning.” His moved slightly closer to the front of the classroom as the young man moved to exit, and his eyes caught on both Mr Rasting and Miss Renaldi, both of whom were still standing by the door.
”Kaiser, my office door is always open.” He said, just before the Slytherin left the classroom. What was noteworthy however was the fact that Mr Rasting was turning on his heels - followed, surprisingly by one of Ravenclaw’s prefects. Well, that was both interesting and disappointing.
”Mr Rasting, Miss Renaldi - come to my office tonight, after dinner please.” For this extra seminar, which didn’t include course specific transfigurations, he would not hold them to attend - however he did expect respect, especially from two students who usually excelled within his subject.

Walking into the classroom today, he stopped fleetingly to read the blackboard before taking one of the mosses baskets. “Good morning Professor” greeting him briefly before he headed off to sit somewhere. After the last few weeks, the prefect, with some difficulty, had managed to get his emotions in check for the most part and was now at the point where he could actually talk to people again which must have come as a relief to some of his friends and some professors too most likely.
Today, he did have baba Mila so trying to get back to the table whilst trying to balance carrying her and the basket was a little challenging but the tall Ravenclaw manged it without making too much of a scene, placing Mila in the basket as he found a space alone, his eyes roaming around the classroom for a partner. Surprisingly, he laughed a little to himself as he met the eyes of some of his friends, amused at how badly they were taking this whole baby project. Sure, it cried a little and it was aaaaalllllwaaaaays hungry but it wasn’t as bad as some of them were making it. They’re not exactly little banshee’s!
Still alone, the Ravenclaw prefect looked back at the front of the classroom with expectant eyes as the lesson began. “Well Professor, you’d obviously need clothes for the baby and the appropriate food. Then you’d need a cot and somewhere for the baby to sit or lay down throughout the day so maybe a bassinet. At least, those were some of the things I helped put together for my Aunty over the Christmas holidays” smiling now as he remembered his little family back home in Canada. “She had a little girl” he tacked on at the end, just in case the professor was curious. Sure, his Christmas holidays had been super busy and rather confusing but baba Eleanor was one of the bright lights in his life at the moment. He couldn’t wait to get home to the summer to see her as a matter of fact. A little space from…this place might be good.
Carwyn held Ianto carefully against his chest and nodded as he pointed towards Ewan. ”Very good, yes! Everything you listed is needed for newborn babies.” He smiled, before adding. ”Congratulations to her.” How cute, babies were always cute especially if they were sleeping soundly like his baby doll was doing.

She raised her hand, trying not to disturb her babe. "Um, wipes. Parents need lots of hand sanitizer and wipes to wipe the baby's bum and all the surfaces it touches." As she had learned so far, babies pooped a LOT.
Carwyn gave Bernadette a smile and nodded, chuckling slightly. ”You are incredibly on point there, Bernadette. You are in for a world of trouble if you do not have wipes to hand. Parents often have a pack in any bag they have, and various packs around the house just to have them at hand.” He chuckled at that, nodding with a grin. Babies definitely were poop machines.

If so, somebody had to let her in on that little secret!
Yes, she was settled, and once for once, Ellie was asleep. Hearing him talk about the sounds of babies in the corridors reminded her that she was seriously ready for this whole baby assignment to be over with. She had just turned twelve and was nowhere near ready (or willingly able to put up with) that part of life. Someday, though. Yearrrrrrs from now.
The first question was something she actually knew a lot about, seeing as she was the oldest of three children. "They definitely need something to carry the baby around in," she said, raising her hand. It was nice to carry a baby yourself, but that couldn't possibly be a twenty-four seven commitment. Sometimes the baby would want to sleep flat and undisturbed, and other times that moms and dads just had stuff to do. "Like a stroller or something," she added.
Carwyn again, nodded his head as Isla chimed in to their discussion. ”Perfect, Isla. A pram, sling, and carrier are only some of the options that parents have to make sure they can get their children from point A to B.” He grinned at her, before moving on.
SPOILER!!: Chloe

Could they work in threes? This was his baby doll niece. Plus, he had watched her for a bit when Chloe needed him too so he had experience with this doll.
She would let him decide though, right now she was listening as others answered and looked to Ewan as he answered as well. She thought to when A was born and briefly thought about the new baby being born. It better be a boy again, she liked being the only girl in the family, but it might not be bad if she had a sister either. She still couldn't deal with her parents and their newfound family of kids. Were they trying to replace her and Gunnar since they were of age now? Even though she knew they would never replace them and she had the best family she still was in a mood about it.
Lifting her hand she decided to answer, "At the hospital, they don't really need much, I mean from home. The healers provide many things while there. So they really only need an outfit to come home in and if they are going to bottle feed they might need a bottle, but floo is so quick that they probably don't even need that. Once home silencing charms for their other kid's rooms are needed so the other children can sleep through the night. Parents need to decide what kind of feeding they will do, what type of diapers. There are a few different types and brands. Getting a nursery up isn't a full need, because many cosleep, but eventually you will want the baby in it's own bed. At least some do."
Even if he hadn’t known that the McCarthy’s had siblings, Chloe would have just told him as much. The adding of silencing charms said so much, and he wondered if that would help some of the students to sleep, however considering how many students were taking part in the assignment, he wasn’t sure how much help even the charms would be.
He nodded though, ”Again, another excellent set of answers. You are right, some prefer to have a nursery organised before they take their baby home, others wait to see how they settle - others never truly use a nursery until later. Thank you, Chloe. You’ve also touched on something very important - but we will return to that in a minute.” She got a wide smile from him though.
SPOILER!!: Heath

He rummaged through his school bag for his book, quill, and parchment, and - Oops, he'd accidentally grabbed Leia's baby bag by mistake! If that wasn't a sign that he needed sleep, he didn't know what was!
Once he'd fished his supplies out of the correct bag, Heath draped his school bag over the back of his chair and set the baby bag on the floor under his desk. He tried to pay attention to the lesson, but his eyes kept flicking toward Leia every few seconds to make sure she was still okay and sleeping. Wait, what was the question again? Oh, right… name something a baby needs. Well, that should be easy after spending so much time taking care of Leia.
Heath thought for a minute. The first things that came to mind were clothes, nappies, and baby food… but all of those had already been said and didn't need repeating. Did baby bottles and formula fall under the category of baby food? Probably. So what else could he say? Heath stared at the floor, lost in thought, and saw a stuffed toy had fallen out of Leia's bag. As he picked it up, an idea occurred to him, and the hand that wasn't holding the plush went up. "You'd need something to entertain the baby, like toys or a mobile," he said after being called on. "Toys that make noise or have bright colors are good for newborns." Which reminded him…
Oh, no! He forgot to give Leia her ewok toy before he put her down, and she wouldn't sleep without it. His eyes darted apprehensively toward the baby wrapped in the Star Wars blanket. It was only a matter of time before she wanted her ewok. Was he allowed to get up and give it to her, or should he wait until she cried for it and hope she didn't wake all the other babies?
Again, Carwyn was nodding impressed with their knowledge of what was needed. ”Yes, exactly. Babies need stimulation to process things around them, to learn and to develop.” He saw the toy and the baby and the Ravenclaw looking between them. He gave a slight nod, though the crib wasn’t too far away so Heath wouldn’t need to move much further than the side of his desk to do what he needed to do to keep his own little one settled.
SPOILER!!: Claudine

No, he wasn’t, but like she had told Eris, he was a quiet boy who really only made noises when he was hungry, goes too long without attention or needed his diaper changed. Yes, Claudine had learnt all of that from Cole initially but after she began spending time with Christopher, she re-learnt this for herself. The Snakette smiled down at Christopher then leaned back in her seat to focus on the lesson.
“Stamina,’’ Claudine said, hand up. “Because the parents will go weeks and weeks without proper sleep.’’ That was true as one could see from some of her classmates. Actually, she was thinking more of Cole and how tired he would look. She felt sorry for him. Imagine handling a baby and OWL studies at the same time.
It was nothing like the answer that Carwyn had expected, but he let out a chuckle at her answer and grinned widely. ”While that wasn’t an answer I was expecting, yes… That is also true.” Still chuckling, he nodded. ”You are right, as a new parent you don’t sleep well. Even if you baby is sleeping, you wake at any sound, every rustle of a tree makes you think something is going wrong and any sound they make, makes you paranoid.” He smiled as he looked around the class. ”Though, I think a few of you are experiencing interrupted sleep as it stands.” Which meant they knew about some of the issues, and he could move on.
The Professor moved around the front of the desk and tapped the board, which showed a list of the items that they had said a home would need for a new baby. It was definitely a good start, he was impressed.
””Excellent, well done. As you can see, the needs of a baby are varied and there are generally a wide selection of items that you need to purchase in order to be ready for the birth of a baby.” He paused adding thoughtfully; ”There are definitely items that you can buy after the baby has been born, however that would usually mean that a lot of money will need to be spent at once and usually this isn’t the most financially stable way to prepare for a newborn.” No, not when a full wardrobe of outfits and furniture could be expensive. Especially if you were picky like Carwyn had been.
”However, Chloe mentioned something worth noting… She said, Healers provide many things while you are in hospital.” He paused, looking around the room. ”What do you think that the Hospital and Healers provide? What about the Ministry? Do they give parents anything towards the birth of their child?” Settling on the edge of his desk, Carwyn waited for hands to start being raised as they moved on.

The first year watched, somewhat dumbfounded, as three or four people left the room. Was that seriously a thing here? Could she just get tired of a class and walk on out? She had to ask someone about this after class! Anyway...another question had been launched, so Isla redirected her attention back to the professor.
"I've seen the newborns come home wearing these little pink and blue hats from the hospital with a matching pink and blue blanket," she said. Other than that, she really had no idea what they might give the mothers and their babies. Maybe pacifiers? Diapers? Baby wipes? She was trying to remember if Ava or Oliver had come home with anything like that. She had only been two-years-old, though, when Ava was born, and then not too many years older than that when Oliver was born.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
"so immature" Minjae whispered under his breath as he took note of a couple of students leaving the classroom. Although he wasn't a hundred percent sure why they had left, he did have a feeling that it was because of the babies. They were all tired but the rest of them did not get up and leave so what was so special about them that they could just do it?
And yeah, he himself had missed a couple of classes as well but there was a big difference between never showing up in the first place and leaving when you were already in class. The latter looked far more disrespectful to him but whatever.
Minjae turned his attention back to the professor. Having completely missed the first question as he had been lost in his thoughts, the Hufflepuff decided to answer the next one. When it came, he thought for a moment. Had his mother gotten something from the hospital when his little brother had been born? He couldn't remember. As for the Ministry... His parents were muggles so he did not know what they would provide either and his father was the owner of a large company himself so he guessed he could just take some time off whenever he wanted? This was all so confusing to him that he decided to stay quiet again

She smiled widely at the professor, it was the first time since this project started that she truly felt she knew something. Sitting up a little straighter with a bit more confidence that this lesson might be alright she paid attention to the Professor some more even smiling a bit when he brought up one of her points.
Glancing a Mila, who was happily sitting with Ewan, she thought about how bad she felt she was doing at taking care of the doll and how maybe she had more knowledge then she was giving herself credit. Did actual parents feel this way? She assumed maybe not and that she was just being too much in her head.
Lifting her hand again, "They give lots of assistance for new parents. Teaching and helping with feedings and learning to swaddle." There was the nursery so the mom's got some rest too, but she would let someone else bring that up.

Heath caught the nod Professor Eris gave him, returning it with an appreciative one of his own as he got up to give Leia her ewok. The little doll in the Star Wars blanket had just begun to whimper as he approached her basket. "Leia…" he whispered, keeping his voice down so as not to disturb the other babies or the other students. "Where's Mr. Ewok?" He pulled the plush out from behind his back. "Peek-a-boo!"
Leia's fussing stopped immediately at the sight of the toy, thank goodness! Heath didn't even want to know what would've happened if Leia woke up all the other babies! He tucked the ewok plush into the basket beside Leia and hurried back to his seat, just in time to hear the next question. Uhh… He ran a hand through his messy dark hair as he wracked his brains for an answer. It looked like between his healer mum and his nurse aunt, he'd know this, but he was drawing a blank. He was going to chalk that up to lack of sleep.
As Heath thought, he recalled a conversation he overheard over the summer. It was not long after his cousin Kala was born, and Rabi was telling Mum and Aunt Emmy about some baby lotion she got in the hospital. That was it! He raised his hand and said, "Some hospitals provide samples of products like baby wash, lotion, or rash cream."

Claudine liked to think out of the box and liked it more when her professors appreciated them; like Eris grinning now. It made Claudine smile back and thus, offering one of the rarer parts of her personality. She nodded as Eris went on, and though she had no experience prior to this with actually taking care of babies, she understood all he was saying. She jotted responses in her book, or rather, continued to as she had already been doing that.
When she finished, she happened to glance at Christopher to see one of his little fist in the air. The sight warmed her heart and she held out a finger. Christopher grabbed it and held on; he cooed a little and Claudine leaned over so she could shush him patiently. And she thought while the baby pulled at her finger. What exactly was provided to the parents?
“Advice,’’ the Snakette volunteered. “Especially for first time parents.”

What did Healers and the Ministry provide?? Well besides the obvious potions and healing spells, Bernie was pretty sure there could be a financial gain from having a baby and keeping the wizarding population going; this was at least what her parents had told her when they'd brought her annoying little sister home from the hospital. She wasn't sure though, as she raised her hand. Wizards were weird sometimes.
"Do you get a tax break for having a baby?" She had to hazard a guess. "Also, do wizards pay taxes?????"

Phoebe yawned hugely and peeked over Bernie's shoulder to check on Finneas. Sleeping. Why was he sleeping NOW but he wouldn't sleep when they wanted to sleep? She yawned again and gave Bernie a skeptical look. Did wizards pay what? What about what? Bernie was way too smart... hopefully Finneas had her brains.
"The Ministry doesn't have to help with babies. They have to make sure people follow laws and make sure that people are safe and stuff. Taking care of babies is the job for mums and dads." Maybe it was nice to think about the Ministry offering supplies or help, but why would they do that?

Oh Merlin.
This lesson had only just begun but it was already teaching him a lot about himself. The main lesson? That he didn’t want kids. They were loud and noisy and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get this doll to shut up! This wasn’t supposed to be that difficult, was it? Sure, the baby couldn’t tell him what was wrong, but......... it could give him a hint! A small hint. Then he might not feel like he’d tried everything in the book but nothing was working.
S I G H.
At Professor Eris’ question, Lucas only vaguely looked up and at the man. What did you need in the hospital? What could Healers provide for you? Why could the Ministry provide for you? Well, a lot of things. Eyebrows furrowed, the Gryffindor looked off into the distance as he tried to remember what his mum took with her on the day she was going to give birth to Art. But that led to more problems: he didn’t remember. Emma might know but he had no clue.
Did that stop him from raising his hand?
No.
Before he knew what was happening, his hand was up in the air. "Well, see, as a new parent, you’re bound to have a lot of questions, right? And Healers are the best people to ask about anything health-related. You know, make sure everything is perfect and you have all the tips to be able to look after the baby as easily as possible." Pause. "There are some, uh, I guess, illnesses?" Merlin. "Yeah, there are some that can be recognised from birth or show signs from birth and a Healer could give you that information and how to move forward from that."

Calling on Heath next, Carwyn again smiled as another correct answer was given. ”Yes! They do. My youngest had a tough time with her skin when she was a baby; broke out at various soaps and creams we attempted to use within the first few days but the hospital were able to help us figure out what was irritating her, so that we knew which creams to use.” He smiled and then moved on again.

”Yes, can you think of any types of advice specifically?” He asked, though truly there were so many things that first-time parents asked that Claudine probably couldn’t give him a wrong answer. ”First time parents often worry more than recurring parents, though it is highly unlikely your babies will all be the same, even if you try really hard.” He chuckled. He hadn’t even attempted that, there was simply no way any of his kids would have turned out the same, even if he had been with most of them from a younger age.

She wasn't sure though, as she raised her hand. Wizards were weird sometimes.
"Do you get a tax break for having a baby?" She had to hazard a guess. "Also, do wizards pay taxes?????"
Carwyn blinked. ”Our economy doesn’t work in the same way as the muggle one, if you have any questions you can come and see me one day after classes, Bernadette - but for now… how to Healers and hospitals help new parents with their babies?” He asked her, waiting to see if she could give him another answer. "The Ministry doesn't have to help with babies. They have to make sure people follow laws and make sure that people are safe and stuff. Taking care of babies is the job for mums and dads." Maybe it was nice to think about the Ministry offering supplies or help, but why would they do that?
”What about making sure that children are safe and protected? Would that then, not fall into that category?” He asked, curious about Phoebe’s thoughts. ”It seems to be different depending on your country's government, but some Governments help to make sure that families have a variety of clothing items for their newborn. However, from what I have seen, this action certainly isn’t in the majority.”

Merlin, stop talking.
The Professor on the other hand, looked happy at the idea of someone thinking of the physical health of the baby from the very onset. ”Exactly. We won’t be covering anything regarding their healthcare today, but Healers have such a wide range of knowledge, beyond their specialties that they truly are a fantastic source of information. Especially when you are dealing with newborns, or you haven’t seen specific symptoms before.” Yes, as a parent himself he liked that answer.
“Well done everyone, as we have discovered the Healers and the Hospital play a vital role in the first few days of a babies life.” He nodded as he spoke and carefully placed his baby doll in the crib since he was sound asleep.
”Now as Isla mentioned, when babies are newly born, they are often given hats to help keep them warm. After all, they are experiencing the elements and the cold for the first time, keeping their temperature up and steady is incredibly important to supporting their developing immune system.
With that in mind, today we are going to practice a new transfiguration. It is called the ‘Tectum Caput’ spell. It is likely better known for transfiguring a variety of hats that adult witches and wizards would like to wear themselves, but today we are going to use it to make a hat for your baby. Afterwards, we are going to see how many additional hats we can create so that we can donate them to the newborn babies that have been born at St Mungo’s.” He smiled at them all, sure that their hard work would pay off and that they would be able to create a multitude of hats for St Mungo’s today.
Moving up the side of the classroom, Carwyn flicked his wand at the board behind his desk and writing appeared there for them all to see.

[b]OOC: Hi!
So we will have roughly 42-44 hours on this section, moving on between 10pm and midnight, Thursday evening, GMT. I’ll check in throughout, and will post updates before hand if needed. Have fun!!
Jina sat quietly listening to the professor and her classmates, while keeping an eye on the baby who was now thankfully asleep. She did not really know the answers to the questions and her brain seemed to have stopped working temporarily. Or maybe it just selectively decided not to respond to any question that contains the word "baby" in it. Although she did not participate actively, she paid attention and agreed to what the other students said. She smiled when the professor said that they will be practicing a hat transfiguration spell. That was such a cute idea! She could give baby Billie a nice warm hat to wear. Maybe then she would cry less. It would also make her feel happy to donate hats to real babies born at St Mungo's. Therefore, she was determined to learn the spell well.
"TEC-toom kap-OOT." She said slowly, practicing the pronunciation of the spell. She focused on the consonants that the professor mentioned specifically and made sure that she pronounced them clearly. She practiced saying it a few more times until she felt confident, "Tectum Caput." Then, she practiced the wand movement. With her wand, she drew a circle in the clockwise direction and tapped the air in front of her. She practiced it multiple times, trying to improve the shape of the circle and its connection to the tapping movement.

Claudine thought for a moment. She too had arrived at the conclusion that there were many questions new parents asked. “Questions like how often will they need to take the child in for checkups. Or how often he or she will need to be fed.” Yes, those sounded about right. At least they were questions she would ask. Claudine wiggled her finger which Christopher was clutching but she didn’t get any reaction from him. Peering into the basket, she saw that he had finally fallen asleep. This was perfect for it meant she would be able to practice her spellwork without disturbance.
After making her notes, the girl immediately began to practice the words to the spell. “Tec tum kap oot. Tec tum kap oot. Tec tum kap oot. Tectum Caput.’’ The necessary T and C were properly pronounced; Claudine made sure to keep that much in mind.

Well, that had been a lucky guess on her part. This was going to be a pretty cool lesson. Not only was Ellie going to get a new hat, but so were lots of babies at St. Mungo's. She looked down at her baby. Maybe a hat would keep her from crying so much. She could only hope...
Time for a little practice, which didn't seem too hard, seeing as the wand movement was just a circle and a touch. "TEC-toom kap-OOT," she said, listening to each sound to make sure she'd said them all. "TEC-toom kap-OOT." She blended them all together fluently. "Tectum Caput!"
The wand movement seemed super duper easy, but Isla decided to give it a go anyway. She made a clockwise circle and then pretended she was touching a piece of fabric. Hmm...alright. She was pretty sure she was ready to go. Time to make some hats!

Her quietness hadn’t been from exhaustion, or at least Carys wasn’t about to think it was when she knew there were others who were having a much more difficult time with the Muggle Studies assignment. Nor was it because she generally had no ideas as to the answers to the questions Professor Eris had posed. It was more just a matter that she was focused on taking notes and generally keeping an eye on her baby in her moses basket rather than speaking, but the idea that they would be transfiguring hats for babies in St. Mungo’s was infinitely pleasing to her. Anything that helped people who couldn’t help themselves seemed like a positive thing to the Hufflepuff prefect.
When they’d been instructed as to the spell and its separate parts, she had slipped her wand out and laid it on the desk in front of herself but otherwise held back from performing any movements with it. First came the pronunciation, as honestly she felt it was important for all spells. Not particular to some as the professor seemed to be inferring. Either way, she quietly started to practice. “TEC-toom kap-OOT,” she enunciated, before repeating herself a few times. “Tectum Caput, Tectum Caput, Tectum Caput.”
Only once she felt like she’d managed to get the pronunciation down, even with her accent, she finally picked up her wand. A clockwise circle, then a tap. “Does the size of our circle have an influence on the size of our hat?,” she asked after a few practice movements, raising her non-wand hand partway. It seemed like a possibility.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
For probably the first time in his 3 and a half year at Hogwarts, Minjae was determined to successfully transfigure a hat. Since the subject wasn't his best (after Herbology it was his worst) he had never really put his heart in to it because he knew he would fail anyway. But taking care of a baby, fake or not, had made him realize that he could do so much more. Plus matching hats was probably the cutest thing ever right?
So when they were told to practice, Minjae took out his wand to practice the motion first. He circled it clockwise and then tapped. Circle clockwise and tap. Circle clockwise and tap. It wasn't too difficult. There were spells that had a much more complicated wand motion.
He practiced one last time before he placed his wand on the desk and looked over at the blackboard to see how the spell was pronounced. Tec-toom kap-oot" he said. "Tectum Caput... Tertum Ca--" no.. "Tectum Caput"

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat? Wizards didn't have to pay taxes???? Bernie didn't know what taxes were or how they worked, really, but she'd heard so many Muggle adults complain about them over the years that she just took them for granted. Well this was great news, so. She was glad to be a witch today.

"TEC-Tooooom-KAP-oot!" Bernie began practicing this tongue twister of a spell. "TEC-toooom-KAP-oot! Tec-tom-KAPOOT!"

Heath had been wondering how all this talk of baby needs was going to tie back into transfiguration. Surely they weren’t going to transfigure the babies into something… because there was no way he was doing that to his (fake) daughter! He was relieved to hear they were instead making hats for their babies and the babies of St. Mungo’s. He had to admit that sounded like a pretty cute idea! Ooh, maybe he could make Star Wars character hats for the babies, sort of like the one Leia already had on!
The only problem was he was completely useless at spells. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to learn; just the idea of performing spells in a room full of other people set his teeth on edge. What if he tried and tried but he never got it right before time ran out? What if everyone thought he was dumb? Or worse, what if everyone laughed at him?
Heath shook his head, trying to distract himself from his worries, as he copied down the information on the board. Tectum Caput… clockwise circle wand movement, then touch the material with the tip. At least the wand movement seemed pretty simple. He decided to practice that part first. Heath drew a clockwise circle in the air with his wand, then touched it to an imaginary piece of fabric. After a couple more repetitions, he was reasonably confident he had the wand movement down.
Now came the hard part: the spell itself. How was he going to do this? It seemed to him that a room full of people saying spells would be a sure way to wake up the babies! “TEC-toom kap-OOT,” Heath whispered under his breath, his eyes momentarily darting toward Leia’s basket to make sure he hadn’t woken her. Good, she was still asleep! Unfortunately, whispering the spell made his enunciation suffer. “TEC-toom kap-OOT,” he tried again, speaking a little louder this time. There, that was a bit better. “Tectum Caput, Tectum Caput.”

Claudine was quite pleased with herself for she felt confident about the way she was saying the incantation. For her, it just rolled right off of her tongue. Now, she was free to move onto the wand movement. She would just use her bag for pretend material right now.
Clockwise circle. Touch the bag with tip of wand.
Clockwise circle. Touch the bag with tip of wand.

Yes. That was all there was to it. This second year was ready to make hats.

With Ianto sleeping in his crib, Carwyn moved around the classroom. It wasn’t something that he needed to do, but honestly holding the baby reminded him of his great-granddaughters and he missed them. That, and it was relaxing to hug someone, it was good for blood pressure too. Moving behind Jina, he paused and listened to her pronunciation and smiled. ”Very good, nice consonants.” He praised her, before moving around the room. Once he was satisfied, a small pile of fabrics ended up on the corner of her desk.

The next student he moved around to was Claudine, yet another student that he felt had evolved over the course of this year. She was certainly making progress within Transfiguration and her dedication certainly seemed to be paying off. If she was struggling, he was certain she wouldn’t hesitate to come and talk to him. He had been going to correct her, however her following two pronounciations were right - so he didn’t think he had anything to worry about. ”Good, well done.” Another stack of fabrics ended up on the corner of Claudine’s desk before he moved on.

It was different seeing the prefect being so quiet, but she was actively taking notes and listening to the conversation as it moved around the room so Carwyn didn’t feel like he needed to ask her to take part in any way. Especially as she started to practise the incantation as soon as the class moved on. When he got around to her, he listened and smiled as she quickly learnt to edit how she was speaking (accents could be irritating, he knew first hand), so that it flowed and seemed almost ready. Another time or two and she would be sorted - easily done by the time she organised her wand motion. He was just away to add an assortment of squares to her desk when she asked him a question and he smiled.
”It has more to do with the image you create in your mind, and the size of person you know that the hat will fit - however, if you imagine a hat for me and draw a knut size circle - I doubt the proportions will be as correct as you hope. I have found that a circle roughly the size of a side plate, allows the spell to either downsize or upsize as it needs too without …. Looking bizarre.” Concentration and focus. Unfortunately, Transfiguration and those two traits went hand in hand. Just like the multicoloured squares that ended up on her desk before he moved on.

As he had made his way back around the room, he listened to her pronunciation and smiled a little at her enthusiasm. ”Remember that it is two individual words, saying both clearly will help you when it comes to casting the spell.” He smiled and stood, listening to her try again, nodding encouragingly.

Carwyn had a feeling that the teenagers were so on edge from the babies not sleeping at night, that they had forgotten that in general, they did need to sleep. They could go down for a few hours through the day which, while handy for classes wasn’t so handy for sleeping… but was very true to form for newborns. Unfortunately.
Moving closer to Heath, he learnt closer. ”Speak up a little more, Heath. You need to be confident in what you are casting. No need to shout, but you need to sound sure. Like you are sure of the image in your head, and the outcome you want.” Carwyn nodded and added a stack to Heath's desk before he moved around the other students.
Recycled fabric pile after stained stack after recycled fabric pile went down on each desk, as Carwyn checked in with each student. Good, they seemed to have picked that up reasonably well.
”Good! Well done everyone, that was a great start.” He smiled and moved back to his desk, so that he could lean against it. ”Now, as you can tell, I’m never going to ask or tell anyone to wake a sleeping baby. The only reason for the baby dolls to be so close today is I want you to all take a look at their heads, all the while remembering that there is no consistent weight or size to newborns like we all have within this room, but they will help to guide you - and there is no wrong answer.”
He paused and looked around at them all, making sure that they understood before he picked up the next piece of fabric on the stack he had remaining. It was a horrible brown corduroy with a deep black patch though he had no idea what that stain was. Honestly, he didn't think about it for more than a second because in the next few minutes it would be a baby hat and the horrible colour would be gone.
”So, as we move on, we need to constantly remember to articulate. Now, I’ve given everyone a few cloth squares, these are going to be what we use to create our hats. Remember that you can change the fabric and the design, colour, etcetera, as you create your hat for your baby. You have a few pieces of fabric so that you can have multiple attempts, but remember that the main aim here is to create a hat that fits the baby you have from the assignment or that you are sitting next too.
The hats that you create after that, don't need to fit your baby so you can simply practice; afterall, when babies are born they come in all shapes and sizes, some are very very small and premature, and others make their parents wait weeks to get to see them.”
He paused as he tapped on the board with his finger. ”As I mentioned to Carys, I find this easiest to draw the circle about the size of a sideplate as I picture the hat.” He paused, pictured a cream hat, with a small embrodered spots in cream thread around the brim before he clearly spoke the incantation, drew a clockwise circle in the air and tapped the hideous brown fabric. Within seconds, he had a cream, soft, baby hat in his hand.
Smiling, he held it up higher for the class to see.
”So, we need to remember-” he started as he walked back around his desk towards the students, ”-to enunciate ‘Tectum Caput’ and that the wand movement is an easy, medium sized single clockwise circle and then a tap to your material. Now, as always you need to be focused on what you want to transfigure or it won’t work. I’ll come round and make sure everyone is doing okay. Let me know if you have any questions.”
OOC: Hi my lovelies! You have at roughly 48 hours to complete the rest of the main task. We will be moving on between roughly 11pm Saturday 29th - 1am Sunday 1st.
Carwyn is looking for you to create one hat for a baby in the class, and a second hat for St Mungo’s. If you want to create more than that, that is fine your characters would have had at least four or five bits of recycled materials.

Chloe hadn't had this much fun with the dolls yet during this long project, but right now she was having fun thinking about what cute hats she could make. Maybe she could do it at home for A and the new baby once her mother had it. She listened and practiced the spell, Tectum Caput, it didn't seem too hard and she enjoyed the wand movement for it.
Looking at Mila she wondered what color the baby would look good in, she figured all, but what color would she want to see her in. Since both Ewan and she were Ravenclaw, maybe a cute blue one would look nice. Looking at the fabric she pictured the hat and the color just like she wanted. She would start with something easy and plain just for practice, but then she had other thoughts once she did it a few times.
"Tectum Caput" She said very clearly and with the correct movement. The fabric started to move and the color that she had in mind started to show. She looked at the hat and then at the little one. "I think I made it too small." The doll wasn't asleep, but she was being good for now so Chloe tookt he hat to try on.
Seeing that it was too small she reversed the spell to try again.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Minjae never liked it when the professors walked in between the rows of the tables while he worked. He got why they did it but it usually took away his concentration. He looked up for a moment after hearing the compliment, gave a tiny smile before he looked at the fabric that was placed on his desk.
He watched the demonstration carefully as the professor transfigured the fabric in to a cream colored hat. It was not the color he would personally choose for a hat though. Telling himself that he could do this, the Hufflepuff took in the shape of the dolls head and while he tried to envision how big the hat was supposed to be, Minjae picked his wand back up and pointed it at the fabric.
Since his favorite color was teal, the Hufflepuff decided to go with that color. If this worked out, he could try and make a bigger hat later on and they would have matching hats! He circled his wand clockwise and said "Tectum Caput" he said, trying to focus with all of his might to transfigure the fabric.
Nothing happened. He wasn't surprised either though. He had never been able to successfully transfigure anything at the first try."Tectum Caput" nothing again. He tried and tried again but apart from the fabric changing color once and it not even being the color had wanted, Minjae placed his wand back on the table.
What was he doing wrong? Was it his focus? Or did he not visualize correctly? Maybe there was something wrong with his wand? He picked it up and began to look it over. Apart from a few scratches it looked fine to him. He pointed at the fabric, circled clockwise and said the incantation.
This time, something had happened but not what he had wanted. There was a flash of bright light, Minjae shielded his eyes and when it went out he let out a panicked yell as he slid off the chair sideways and on to the ground. He had successfully vanished not one but two! of his chair legs~

Isls looked down at baby Ellie, trying to get a good estimate of her head size. She didn't know how much about the heads of babies, but she would guess Ellie had about an average sized head. It wasn't too small or too big. The standard size should fit her.
Hopefully...
Isla didn't even know what color hat she'd like Ellie to have, but she kind of liked the cream colored hat the professor made. It looked like it would match any other color Ellie wore, whereas something like pink probably wouldn't. So cream it would be, and that was exactly what Isla pictured. Would it possible to make a hat with a pretty little flower or something? Maybe she'd try that later or something.
She stood before her fabric and pictured the same cream color the professor had created. "Tectum Caput!" she called out. She made a medium-sized clockwise circle around the fabric then tapped it. When all was said and done, she was super proud of the fact that she'd created a hat, but it was waaaaay too big for Ellie's head. That should be an easy fix, though. At least she'd made the hat!

Claudine had been completely unaware that Eris had been watching her but she wouldn’t have been surprised to find out that. Professors usually tried to notice when students were having difficulty. She simply heard his compliment which had her glancing up at him then giving him a pleased nod. It was encouraging to be recognised for trying your best. Now she was looking at the different patterns of fabric on her desk. It was time to get started.
The girl peeked at the sleeping Christopher, at his head, to be exact. It wasn’t a big head, it wasn’t a small one. Then again, what did she know about the usual sizes of babies’ heads? Her artistic mind was portraying a light purple beanie with horizontal white stripes on it.
“Tec-’’
She turned her head so fast that she cricked her neck. There was Minjae on the ground with two of his chair legs missing. Claudine stifled a laugh. It was a far way, vanishing chair legs instead of creating baby hats.
“Tectum Caput.” The hat was pictured as clearly as could be and she made the clockwise circle then touched the tip of her wand to the first piece of cloth. She was unsurprised to find nothing happened; this seemed to be a norm with her spellwork. But she was trying again by repeating the steps. Her second attempt was a little better. At least the fabric turned purple. “Reverte.’’
“Tectum Caput.” The appropriate movement was done and would you know it? There was a hat sitting on her desk exactly as she had pictured.

Bernie couldn't help but lose all focus when Minjae suddenly fell to the ground with two of his chair legs missing; she laughed loudly at him and then quickly, fearing the professor's retribution, picked up a square of fabric. Bernie aimed it at Finneas' head to see if it would even fit him, and then put the square back on the desk.
"Tec-toom KAAA-pooot," Bernie said, moving her wand in a quick clockwise circle and then tapping the fabric square. Aww, cute! It worked! She beamed at the red hat she had, and wondered if she should try to wake Finneas up by attempting to jam it on his head. It DID look a little small still... maybe she should try another one.
Bernie picked up another bit of fabric; this one was blue and purple. "TEC-toom KAA-poot!" she cast again, with the swirl of her wand. YAY! Another hat, this one slightly bigger. She really really REALLY wanted Finneas to wear one of these hats...

Heath thought he was finally getting the hand of saying the spell, but after hearing the professor’s feedback, he wasn’t so sure anymore. Apparently he needed to sound more confident. Unfortunately, confidence was the last thing he felt right now, so he did the thing he always did when he needed to project an emotion he didn’t feel: try to act the part. Concentrating on a time when he felt truly confident, he said with as much force as he could muster, “TEC-toom kap-OOT!” There… Was that better? He hoped it was, as they were moving on to something else.
Heath kept his eyes on Professor Eris throughout the spell demonstration, hanging on to the man’s every word. He looked at Leia, wondering what kind of hat he should make her. Ooh, he had it! He’d make her an ewok hat so she could match her favorite toy! For a moment, he considered removing the hat she was already wearing to use as a size guide, but he decided against it. He didn’t want Leia to start crying and distract everyone! He had just raised his wand to try casting the spell when a yell caused his dark head to turn in the direction of the sound, and he saw an older Hufflepuff (Minjae) on the ground. Unlike some of the other students, Heath didn’t find anything funny about that. He knew how humiliating it was to be laughed at, and besides, he wasn’t very good at transfiguration himself, so who was he to judge? He shot the other boy a quick look of sympathy before turning back to his work, or he would’ve except…
Now Leia was awake. Great… so much for not distracting everyone! Stifling a frustrated sigh, Heath picked up the now wailing doll. Sorry! Sorry, everybody! He thought, casting an apologetic look around the room as he gently rocked the fussy baby in his arms until her cries stopped. If there was a bright side to having Leia start crying in the middle of class, it was that it gave Heath the chance to take off her hat as he returned her to her basket. He traced the opening of the hat with his wand a couple of times to get a feel for the size before turning his attention to the first fabric square on his desk. It was an ugly beige color with - he didn’t even want to know what kind of stain was on it! Visualizing an orange hat with two rounded brown ears attached to the top on each side, he made a clockwise circle with his wand in what he hoped was the same size as Leia’s head and touched the material with the tip. “TEC-toom kap-OOT,” he enunciated.
Before his eyes, the fabric square was gone; in its place was an orange hat with little brown ears, exactly like he’d imagined. Heath blinked in surprise, picking up the hat just to make sure it was really there. Did he really just get a spell right on the first try? That had never happened to him before! Now to see if it fit… “Leia, look what I’ve got for you,” he whispered, gently placing the new hat atop her head. It was a little big, but not so much so as to be unuseable. He was going to call that a success, and so, it seemed, was Leia! No sooner than he put the hat on her that she started making happy baby sounds. Heath smiled. “See? Now you look just like Mr. Ewok!”
One hat down, but he still had one more to go. Heath reluctantly turned his attention back to the stack of fabric squares on his desk. Now what kind of hat should he make for the hospital? His first thought was to make a green hat with Yoda ears, but then he remembered most people at St. Mungo’s wouldn’t know who Yoda was. Maybe he was on to something though… he couldn’t do a Star Wars creature hat, but what about a magical creature? Suddenly an idea came to him: a green hat with little leaves at the top like a bowtruckle’s. Concentrating on his vision, Heath made the wand movement and said, “Tectum Caput!” And… nothing happened. Ugh, he should’ve guessed his earlier success was only beginner’s luck!
He tried again; this time the fabric took the shape of a baby hat, but its original pattern (huge pink polka dots on a neon yellow background) remained. Maybe if he tried a different piece of fabric? Heath picked up another piece of fabric to try again; the square turned green this time, but it kept its shape. What was he doing wrong? He’d already done the spell once, so why couldn’t he do it again? Was it his pronunciation? His wand movement? No, he was doing everything exactly as he’d done it the first time, except… His first design was inspired by Star Wars, something he knew inside and out, so he knew he could visualize it. Maybe the change in design changed his confidence?
Heath decided to try a different design, but what? He thought for a minute. What about a cat, a gray one with black and white stripes like Rey (his cat, not the Star Wars character)? That should be easier to envision than a creature he’d only ever seen in books! Picturing a gray striped hat with cat ears clearly in his mind, Heath made the clockwise circle with his wand and touched the fabric one more time. “Tectum Caput!” He did it, finally!
