Default HoM Lesson 1 - Nicolas Flamel

It was a chilly day on the first of December, but thankfully for her students, Gabi always liked to have her classroom run a little warmer. Multiple bluebell flame charms had been suspended in jars around the classroom to create the ultimate sweet spot in temperature - not too cold, but not so toasty that her students would fall asleep.

Gabi is standing at the front of the class, leaning against her desk and resting her palms on the wood as she waited for her students to enter. Behind her on the blackboard is a single picture hinting at today's lesson:

As the students began to enter, Gabi sat up a little straighter and smiled at them. "Morning everyone! Please have a seat, we'll get started shortly," she announced. No need to get out anything particularly flashy - just their notes and textbooks would do.

OOC: Hello everyone! Welcome to your first History of Magic lesson! I hope you're all as excited as I am to get going! Remember, this is NOT your first History of Magic lesson of the term IC as we are already in December. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Classroom Rules and Expectations as well as the SS RPG rules before posting. Thanks! Class will commence in roughly 24 hours! CLASS HAS NOW STARTED. Anyone posting their character entering class will face IC consequences. Just pretend you've been here the whole time!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

The moment Claudine set foot in the History of Magic classroom, she felt a wave of warmth wash over her. It was enough to make her remove her Slytherin scarf. The bluebell flames cast a nice hue around the room too. There was rather a welcoming feeling about. “Good morning, Healer Recard,’’ she greeted as she moved further into the room. It was only when she had taken a seat (as usual, towards the back of the class) that she focused on the image on the board.

Hmm. Whatever could that be? A piece of ruby? The Sorcerer's Stone?

Whatever it was, she’d find out soon enough.

Naya was on a roll. This being super early to class thing was new to her, but it wasn’t a bad thing. It gave her time to get herself together and be totally prepared for class to begin. Besides, it gave her a chance to check everyone out as they came to class. People watching could be fun.

Now though, it was time for History of Magic. Naya reached the classroom and gave a cheerful, “Hello professor”, upon entering. Then she found a good seat, sat down and dropped her backpack on the floor. As she got her school supplies out and set them on her desk, she noticed the blackboard. What was that picture and what did it have to do with History of Magic? Naya had absolutely no idea. She guessed she’d have to wait a bit to find out. In the meantime, she sat back and waited to see who would arrive next.

As she walked down the corridors and toward the History of Magic classroom, all Isla could think about was how warm her bed had been this morning. Was it just her, or was the castle extra cold today? She crossed her arms over her chest and stepped into the room, immediately feeling the warmth of the bluebell flames.

FINALLY. Some heat!

"Hello, Professor," she said. Professor? Healer? She never really know what to say, but since they were in a classroom and not the Hospital Wing, she went with the one that made the most sense. As she made her way to a random seat, she eyed the stone in the picture. Hmm...interesting. The Sorceror's Stone? Some artifact? A rune? Nahh, not a rune. Her best guess was the Sorceror's Stone.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Catherine arrived for another History of Magic class and took the seat she had by now claimed as hers. Second row, side column which she decided was closest to the professor's desk, but not as close as she would be the first the woman would look at when she glanced around the room. She could see the board perfectly from here, as well as hear all of her classmates' answers and every single words the professor was saying without being distracted by those who wanted to play silly games of parchment ball throwing or those who stupidly gazed out the window for the entirety of the lesson.

After giving professor Recard a polite nod of her head, the first year examined the picture on the board behind the woman as she sat down. At first Catherine was tempted to roll her eyes because a crystal, really? Upon closer examination she noticed it wasn't a crystal, but the Philosopher's Stone. Oh. That was much, much better.

Organising her workspace with her ink pot, quill and parchment, the girl then placed her History of Magic book on top of her parchment and began flicking through it in search of anything that talked about the Philosopher's Stone.

Rowan entered the history of magic classroom, the warmth of the room washing over him. It had been a chilly walk through the castle, so it was nice that it was so cozy in here.

The second year took an empty seat in the middle and gave the professor a small wave. “Professor,” he greeted with a smile, his gaze moving past her towards the board. Hmm... what was that picture for? It looked like... mmmm, strawberry jello... or was Rowan just that hungry?

Phoebe skidded through the door of the History of Magic classroom and took in the flickering blue light. It was warm, but the light made the space look just a bit eerie to her eyes. The Gryffindor tucked her hair behind her ear and studied how her classmates looked in the sickly light.

"Hello, Professor. Healer. Ma'am." She waved cheerfully and took a seat near her new(ish) friend Naya. "Hi! Take any blood pressure lately?"

History of Magic was far more enjoyable with a Professor who was.... Competent. That being said, she still wasn't quite sure what to think of Professor Recard. Her hesitation was quite evident in the way she entered the room. She only paused briefly to acknowledge her professor with a look before moving to find a seat. Nina wasn't much for small talk, especially before a lesson. It felt disingenuous and she had other things to do: namely finding a perfect place to sit and preparing her things.

Obviously she chose a seat in the middle of the room, as far from the many first (and second) years already present. Sitting in the front would be far too visible of a place, while the back would mean she would find herself amongst slackers. And while she did have a reputation to uphold, she also deeply cared about her scores. Which is why she immediately pulled out her notebook and dated the next blank page after sitting.

Lucas was used to weird classrooms and setups that took him by surprise the minute he entered the room. But this? This was........ normal. And that was probably what surprised him the most.

Giving the room a quick scan, he shuffled his way inside and over towards an empty desk. He didn’t really care for where he was sitting, and didn’t pay a lot of attention to who might’ve been sitting nearby. All that mattered was that the desk was empty and he didn’t have to feel as though he was forced to make casual conversation.

"Uh, hello, Professor," he said softly, shooting her a small, tight-lipped smile. And what was that on the board? Was that.......... a gem? Rune? The philosopher’s stone? His eyebrows furrowed and he even tilted his head very slightly as he continued to stare at the image.

Huh. This was......... interesting. Very, very interesting.

One thing that she’d come to expect from the History of Magic classroom over the few months that they’d been, honestly, back home, or at least home away from home, was a relatively normal classroom setting. Therefore, aside from appreciating the beauty of the bluebell flames beyond their physical benefits, Carys hadn’t reacted any different from usual upon arriving at the classroom for the next lesson. There wasn’t any need to react to anything as if it was strange. Besides, the normalcy was almost nice, considering it was Hogwarts. The brunette prefect appreciated the relief.

“Good morning, Professor Recard,” she greeted the woman at the front with a smile before heading to an open seat somewhat near Lucas. Mostly because he looked as if he wouldn’t mind if she just sat quietly. Even if there really didn’t seem to be much mystery as to what they’d be discussing in the lesson today, if the image on the board meant anything. It was either a ruby or the philosopher’s stone, and she couldn’t think of a reason they’d be talking about gemstones.

Know who was sitting in the back row of the classroom? This gal, that's who. Whitney really had no interest in history of any kind and while she did care about her grades, she didn't care enough to sit at the front or even the middle of a class where she'd already studied the topic. Because it was obvious that the picture on the board was one of their topic and it was the Sorcerer's Stone. That infamous stone that made one live a really long time and which they'd covered last term at Illvermorny. Not to mention, it had been destroyed, so it wasn't doing anyone any good.

Taking her seat, setting her bag down beside her, and removing her note-taking supplies from said bag, she got ready to take notes. Or at least look like she was taking notes.

Professor Recard's classroom usually looked like a normal classroom with desks and chairs. It put Cole's mind at ease. Other types of settings usually made him wary and uneasy. Entering the classroom the lion youth welcomed the bluebell flame warmth after walking in the cold corridors down from the Gryffindor common room. "Good day Professor Recard!" he greeted cheerfully as he passed her on his way to take a seat near Carys shooting her a warm smile and a mumbled "Hey Carys,". Taking out his writing materials and textbook Cole's attention was then taken up by the stone on the blackboard behind Healer Recard. We're they going to be discussing the philosophers stone mayhaps?

Tom was really looking forwards to this lesson, he walked into the classroom with a smile on his face. "Good day Professor, hope you are well." He then went and took a seat.

History of Magic was one of Heath's favorite classes for two reasons. 1) He was better at recalling dates and facts than he was at casting spells, so he was less likely to embarrass himself in front of everyone and 2) Professor Recard was one of the least frightening professors here. It was a combination of this and the December chill in the air that had the young Ravenclaw walking a little faster than usual as he made his way to the classroom.

Heath was pleasantly surprised by the warmth as he stepped inside. "Good morning, Professor," he greeted, giving her a slight smile as he passed. His smile grew bigger as he noticed the bluebell flames in jars. He liked those flames! They looked like lots of tiny floating blue lightsabers. Speaking of which…

It was only after he was seated that Heath looked at the board long enough to see the picture of a red object. On first glance, he thought it looked like a kyber crystal, more specifically one that had been turned to the dark side. Surely that couldn't be what it was, right? He supposed he'd find out soon enough.

The thing was that as much as Eiji loved the subject, Hogwarts had left him nothing but sore disappointment ever since he had first stepped foot into the castle with regards to the subject. He was even less sold on the subject this year because of the professor herself.

You see, Eiji knew a thing or two about her given who his grandpa was. Not because his grandpa talked, grandpa was far too professional and mindful to do such things, but because the sixth year had the tendency to snoop a bit and see what secrets he could unlock while inside the Minister's office when he visited during the summer.

So he knew all about The Gopher. And it was curious that someone with...that connection in their history was teaching a subject that taught others to learn from the mistakes of the past.

Just saying.

Stepping into the classroom, the Slytherin was quick to take note of the stone and...it was hard to be impressed by an image when he had been taught in years gone by by someone from the Flamel family...but whatever.

Nodding politely as he did in greeting, Eiji made his way toward a desk and began setting his things out and awaited class to begin.

Carsyn had come to appreciate the fact that Professor Recard always seemed to have the students best interests at heart. Including, of course, the bluebell flames so that the classroom had a cozy and not cold vibe to it. Appreciated.

Something else appreciated? Which probably was nothing to do with Recard as just scheduling in general, was the fact that History of Magic was not early in the morning. A theoretical subject such as history needed to not be too early or too late, lest they want most of the students sleeping through it.

"Good morning, Professor Recard," she nodded at the woman who she couldn't quite figure out if she was one of the young professors or older or somewhere in between??? She looked good for whatever age she was, that was for certain. Finding a seat by Carys and Cole, she nodded at them before taking note of the picture on the board.

Gryffindor rubies? No... that wasn't right... it ... she'd seen that picture before... where had she seen it??? Wait. Wait.

Was that?? Could it be??

Leaning over to whisper at her sister, she raised a brow curiously, "Is that the ...." she trailed off, blanking on the word philosopher but certain her sister would be able to figure out what she was implying.

So Cecelia didn't LOVE history of magic. This was mostly because her mind tended to wander during class and then she'd get lost, behind on her notes, and end up having to borrow a friend's later so she could catch up on anything she'd missed. Luckily she had some REALLY smart friends, so she managed okay, but STILL...not her favorite.

"Good morning, Professor!" The Gryffindor offered the older woman a grin and then moved past her in search of a seat. She saw Catherine, busy prepping for the discussion ALREADY, which meant she probably shouldn't bother her. Phoebe was also occupied, talking to a girl Cece didn't know very well. Leaving her to it, the blonde decided to join her GOOD friend Lucas. "Hello Mr. Prefect," She greeted with a smile. Cecelia would be joining him today, she hoped he didn't mind.

"Hello, Professor. Healer. Ma'am." She waved cheerfully and took a seat near her new(ish) friend Naya. "Hi! Take any blood pressure lately?"
Gabi chuckled and grinned at the Gryffindor girl as she greeted her with EVERY title she could. "Hello Miss James," she returned the greeting and then...raised an eyebrow. Was that question for her? Or for Naya? It was a strange conversation starter either way...but thankfully she was saved from having to try and figure out who the second year was addressing because the next wave of students was coming in.

As usual, Nina Castillo seemed...hesitant to enter the room. She got the vibe from the girl that she was like that in every aspect of her life...so she just gave her a nod of acknowledgement as she watched her take her seat.

"Hello Prefect Dakest," Gabi greeted the Gryffindor boy as he took his seat, smirking a little as she noticed him looking at the picture on the board. MANY of the students had paused to examine the picture as they entered, which was just what she had wanted.

"Good morning Prefect Rose," Gabi said. Prefect Rose #1 of course. Now where was #2?

Because it was obvious that the picture on the board was one of their topic and it was the Sorcerer's Stone. That infamous stone that made one live a really long time and which they'd covered last term at Illvermorny. Not to mention, it had been destroyed, so it wasn't doing anyone any good.

Taking her seat, setting her bag down beside her, and removing her note-taking supplies from said bag, she got ready to take notes. Or at least look like she was taking notes.
The Ravenclaw got a nod of acknowledgement from Gabi as she took her seat all the way in the back - which she had expected from her after having taught her for a few months now. She always kept an eye on her - she didn't mind if she didn't enjoy the class, as long as no distractions were caused.

Students who entered so...bright and cheery were always welcome in Gabi's classroom! She grinned at the Gryffindor. "Hello Mister Vance," she greeted him as he took his seat.

If Gabi had known about his thoughts on the picture she'd posted on the board, she would have been...very confused by the Muggle terms, to be honest. Oblivious to any of that, of course (she was no mind reader obviously) she smiled in greeting at the Ravenclaw. "Hello Mister James, welcome to class."

Gabi wasn't surprised when Eiji skipped the pleasantries and got straight to his seat, so she returned the nod with a small smile of acknowledgement as she watched the Slytherin take his seat.

Ah, there was Prefect Rose #2. Gabi grinned at the prefect and nodded at her in greeting. "Hello Prefect Rose, have a seat," she said, gesturing towards her sister - as they usually sat together she assumed that would be the case today.

"Good morning Miss Summers," Gabi greeted the young Gryffindor as she watched her take a seat near Lukas Dakest.

It seemed like the crowd was thinning, and since it was now 11 AM exactly...anyone who wasn't here was considered late. By now, they were all WELL aware of Gabi's thoughts on tardiness. She took her wand and waved it at the door so that it closed. It wasn't locked, so stragglers could still come in...if they wanted to risk a loss of house points and the embarrassment of having to take their seat in front of the whole class, of course.

"Good morning everyone!" Gabi greeted the class as a whole cheerfully as she stood up, starting her usual pace in front of the class as she talked. "I hope you're all doing well today. I haven't seen many of you in the hospital wing lately, so I take that as a good thing," she said with a small smirk. The slower her other job at the school was, the better. It meant they weren't engaging in shenanigans that could be potentially life threatening - a nice change of pace around here, to be honest.

"I saw many of you taking a look at the picture on the board as you walked in. Obviously, I posted that up there as a little hint towards today's lesson. As many of you probably guessed - this is a picture of the Philosopher's Stone, sometimes referred to as the Sorcerer's Stone," she explained, pausing for a moment to allow students to scribble that down, if they didn't already have that bit of information stored in their brains.

"However, that is not the main subject of today's lesson. The main subject we will be discussing today? The CREATOR of the Philosopher's Stone - Nicolas Flamel," she announced, waving her wand at the blackboard. His name was scribbled in chalk across the blackboard and then underlined. "Flamel is, without a doubt, one of the most influential wizards in our history. So, to start off, I'd like to ask you all a simple question - what do you know about Nicolas Flamel? Try not to repeat answers - there is MORE than enough information in your textbooks for everyone to have something unique to contribute to the conversation!" she encouraged them with a smile before standing back and waiting for the first hand to raise.

OOC: Hey everyone! Class has officially started! If you didn't get to post your character entering the class, that's ok - just act like you were here the whole time (or risk the IC consequences of Gabi's wrath). Class will resume in roughly 30ish hours because I have to work all day tomorrow so - have at it! Any questions? Just flag me down in the title of your post!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

And so the lesson was beginning. One of the most important things about that moment was that Claudine had been correct about the Sorcerer's Stone. What surprised her was that they weren’t exactly going to be discussing the Stone but rather, Mr. Flamel. What did she know about him? Just a bit, really. In her opinion, and others she was sure, Flamel had been one of the most brilliant men to have ever walked the earth. This included both in the Wizarding and Muggle Worlds.

The girl raised her hand. “Flamel unfortunately attended Beauxbatons Academy of Magic.’’ She wiggled her fingers a bit then lowered her hand thoughtfully. Who would ever be excited to attend that School? The experiences of the previous year had rather spoilt her earlier view about Beauxbatons.

Right, right, Nicolas Flamel... Bernadette had definitely read about him before! Her hand shot up, with the thought to mention that she was pretty sure he was French, but since Claudine answered that (ish) before her, she quickly thought of another fun Flamel fact.

"My chocolate frog card said he was friends and maybe alchemy partners with former Headmaster Dumbledore, I believe," she chimed in. Yes, her collecting those cards counted as reading.

The class was starting to fill and Naya figured that they would be starting soon. She smiled as her former partner, Phoebe, came and sat near her. “Hi Dr. Fifi”, she said to her housemate. “Nope. I haven’t done any checkups lately.”. Phoebe was so much fun. She made Naya smile just by walking into the room.

But then it was time for class to start and Naya couldn’t continue her conversation. The professor was talking now, so she gave her her undivided attention. The Sorcerer’s Stone and Nicholas Flamel......that was what they would be addressing today. Naya thought for a moment. What did she know about Nicholas Flamel? She raised her hand and began to speak.

“Nicholas Flamel created the Elixir of Life. It was supposed to make the person who drank it immortal.” That could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on who was doing the drinking.

So, naturally, the picture on the board was in fact not jello. It was the philosophers stone, which, of course, made a little more sense... given that this was history of magic, and not a class about gelatin. Although, a gelatin class would be pretty interesting.

Distracted by the thoughts of jello and their deliciousness, Rowan almost missed the first question. Nicholas Flamel. What did he know about Flamel? His mum was a history geek, so he was sure he had to remember hearing something at some point about the stone-maker. The badger racked his brain as his peers gave their answers, trying to come up with something that hasn’t been said.

Aha!

The second years hand slowly rose up and he gently cleared his throat. “He was the oldest wizard in history, wasn’t he? Lived ‘till about his...six hundreds or so?” He answered. Merlin, six hundred years! Could you imagine?

Isla cast a quick, sideways glance at the door as it was magically closed. By now, she was used to this happening in a classroom. After years of attending muggle primary school, she had been surprised by it at first, even though she was a pureblood and had seen it many times at home. At the sound of the professor's voice, she turned her attention back to the front of the room.

So her guess about the stone had been right, although she didn't much about its creator's life. Flamel had gone to Beauxbatons? Huh. For some reason, he didn't seem like a Beauxbatons kind of guy, but then again, she'd just admitted to herself that she didn't really know much about him at all.

Nevertheless, she raised her hand. "He pretty much volunteered himself to die when he agreed that his stone should be destroyed," she said. Wasn't that what had been helping him along all that time? She guessed it was a pretty brave thing to do, what with volunteering yourself to die and all.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Kodee had been there the whole time, sitting in the back, arms folded on his desk with his head resting just so. History of Magic was never something he'd been enthused about and he didn't suppose that would be changing any time soon. The 7th Year watched his classmates as their hands rose. That Claudine kid got a snort out of him for her answer because let's be real, going to that school was how you ruined your resume and any opinion people had of you.

The French were a piece of work.

He debated for a moment how willing he was to give a response. He could give something academic, give the impression he read every now and then...but then...he didn't wanna give anyone any false hopes.

Eventually, he did raise his hand. "Nicholas Flamel was that dude who wanted to live forever then chickened out before he hit his first millennium." Six hundred years, weak.

So… Philosopher's Stone, not a kyber crystal. Heath felt like an idiot when he heard what the object on the board was. Obviously, he knew it wasn't really a red kyber crystal - this was History of Magic, not Muggle Studies! - but how had he not guessed that? He inwardly berated himself as he jotted down the information in his notes. He mentally prepared himself to give a fact about the Philosopher's Stone when asked, but the lesson moved in a completely different direction.

Nicholas Flamel… what did he know about Nicholas Flamel? Not much, to be completely honest. Most of what he knew had already been said, and Professor Recard said to try not to repeat answers. Heath thought he was going to have to sit this question out when a tidbit of information occurred to him. He was sure he recalled reading Flamel's name tied to Grindelwald, but how? He searched his mind. He knew Flamel wasn't a supported of Grindelwald. so that meant…

Now he had it! Heath's hand went up, and after being called on, he said, "Didn't Nicholas Flamel help stop Grindelwald from destroying Paris in the 1920s?" He hoped wording his answer as a question would make him look slightly less stupid if he turned out to be wrong!
