| | Herbology Lesson 2 : aloe, aloe, hair-loe
March March March! Gus was grateful for the third month of the year and also for being close to the fourth. He loved this time of year, the turns of the weather, the in-between of everything possible and also the middle of the school year. He'd almost lasted a year teaching at Hogwarts and nothing had drastically gone wrong yet. Few hiccups, but the kids grades were good, his teaching was the best it had ever been and his plants were THRIVING. As always, the water station is set up outside Greenhouse Five for students to grab a quick drink before class starts, but they are not permitted to enter the greenhouse with those drinks. So drink up, and get inside! If we're being totally honest, it's still probably warmer in the greenhouse than it is outside.
The greenhouse has rows of workstations complete with cubbies underneath for students belongings. Professor Rainwater is leaning against his own desk at the front of the greenhouse, his fingers strumming on top of a pile of brightly coloured notebooks. What is in them? You'll find out that they're empty as soon as Professor Rainwater hands you one when you walk in. Behind him, on the whiteboard that features in all of his classes, is a set of opening instructions like usual. Quote:

- OOC: HI. I'm super excited to be opening the second played out herbology lesson of the term. Yaaaaaay. Your character should be well aware of the rules and expectations that Gus has of them in his classroom. ALSO, the Muggle Studies baby project will IC have finished by the time this lesson is happening and therefore there will be no babies around in this class.
Any questions, please feel free to contact me! Class will begin roughly 24 hours from this post <3 Class has already began, so please join in as if your character has been here all along! <3

| ~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes. Claudine wasn’t one of those girls who took meticulous care in her appearance. Yes, she was neat and clean but she didn’t spend ages applying makeup or admiring her reflection. The time wasted on that could be spent doing something constructive like sketching. It was one of the reasons she suggested water, even if it wasn’t what Rainwater had expected. At least he was nice about it.
So… they were going to make their own hair product? Typical Rainwater. Still, Claudine was grateful to have something to help her with the slight flaking that had recently started to happen on her scalp. Not to mention the irritating itch that came with it. Not that she was going to mention this out aloud. It was embarrassing.
The second year studied the notes Rainwater had deposited on her workstation. Soon, she started to compile her list: - Salicylic Acid - main function is to remove scales and scalp build up
- Zinc Pyrithione - an antifungal as well as an ingredient that targets dead skin cells
- Ketoconazole - aimed at treating yeast infections on the scalp
With that part completed, Claudine secured two tubs and as she did so, thought of something. “Professor.’’ Her hand went up, fingers wiggling a little. “Would a sprig of mint be alright to add when I’m done? Just to give it an attractive, minty aroma…’’ Claudine liked the scent of mint, yes she did. “Also… please check these ingredients for me.’’ She needed his opinion, okay? But she was back to labelling her tubs. On each was written Name: Claudine Blaze. Contents: Claudine’s Nourishing Scalp Repair Cleanser. |

One thing was for sure...this man had way more beauty knowledge than she did, and she was officially jealous. Heh. Anyway, this lesson sounded so super cool! As a matter of fact, it just might end up being one of her favorite lessons this school year. She was going to get her own, unique hair product!
She was already aware of what her hair needed. Or, at least she thought she was. It was long and thick, was probably lacking moisture due to her flat iron, and it probably had split ends that needed to be cut off. She pulled out a piece of parchment and took down some notes. Once the notes were jotted down, she collected two tubs and began the process of labeling them.
Now it was time to collect her leaves from the dehydrator. This was actually fun! She couldn't wait to see what her final product would be like! She brought the leaves back to her workstation and withdrew her wand. "Pulveris!" she exclaimed, as she made a circle then a vertical line. She watched as the leaves began to turn to a powdered substance. Five more steps to go! Quote:

| doesn't proofread tweets | #wrongaboutcereal | #siriusly? | emo to the extremo Maybe it was for the better that Professor Rainwater hadn’t been able to follow up with a more detailed conversation about Nina’s hair. Why? Because then Nina would have realized how they had far more in common than she would like to admit and the Slytherin was quite content keeping Professor Rainwater at a distance when she could help it. It would be such a blow to her self-esteem to find out they had similar interests.
As it was, however, Nina did give him a polite smile (another rarity) because argon oil did make her hair shine and gave it life and pizazz. A lot of pizazz. Nina loved her hair. And while her interest in herbology typically started and ended with medicine (and also Calyx), today’s lesson was… brilliant. She wouldn’t be the first to admit it, but she was THRILLED by the idea of making her own hair product.
Nina already knew that she wanted to create a dry shampoo. Her hair wasn’t oily, nor was it in need of deep conditioning. But her dry shampoo was running out and it was an essential part of her routine. Once they were given the go ahead, she collected the two tubs from the shelf under her workstation and very neatly (in pristine handwriting) labeled each with her name and ‘dry shampoo’. Setting the tubs down onto her station, she went to collect her dried aloe leaves from the dehydrator.

But was this what most teens, most girls did? Put a lot of time into their hair?!
Huh.
Bernie decided that she'd give hers more attention, starting... oh, now, she supposed, since she was going to make her own hair product. She was going to make SOMETHING that would turn her hair VERY shiny and irresistible. Yes. As to how she would do that... uh, that's what Professor Rainwater would teach her, yes, yes.
She labeled her two jars, fetched her dried out aloe, gloves on and all that, and came back to her workstation. Time to P U L V E R I Z E, eeheehehee. "Pulveris!" the second year cast, drawing the circle and line quickly as she pointed her wand at the aloe vera leaves on her tray. BOOM! She had aloe dust. Bernie coughed a little at the sudden change but was pleased the spell had worked.
Now she had to decide what else to put in her tubs? Eh? "Professsssssor," the lion popped her hand in the air, "what other stuff should I add to make a shine...." uh, "serum?" A shine serum! That sounded good. Was this going to be his first visit with a student into the ingredient room? Gus was THRILLED. And maybe a little happy that it was with Bernie, because she was probably going to make him laugh. He thought she was a hoot. A HOOT. ”Ah. Bernadette! Of course, of course. Let’s go see what I’ve got in store that will work for you.” And so he scooped up a couple of collection dishes and led the way into the ingredient room. ”So, for a serum, we’re going to need a liquid base. Specifically an oil. And you want a shine. Soooo.. I’m thinking argan oil for your base. It’s good for shine. Reallllllly good for shine, even. Maybe even mix in some grapeseed oil?” Double oil would work if she mixed them well together before adding any of the powder in. ”I’d suggest some green tea leaves, lemon zest too.” ”Do you have anything else you want to do for your hair with it?” Quote:

And she was thinking of all bases. Gus was IMPRESSED, OK. ”Yes, Claudine?”
OH. MINT? MINT!! ”A sprig of mint would be great for a scent. You could always pop in mint tea leaves for both a scent and the benefits of the tea leaves for your scalp and hair. I would...um… I’d put a base in there. It’s very targeted right now and not so much a treatment. Bulk it up with some extra things for your hair. Smashed avocado works wonders. Seaweed, too.” Quote:

Do you have any thoughts yet? There’s lots on the list for moisture and split ends. Also heat protection.” Quote:

Isla paused as she glanced up at Rainwater. Oh. Right. She should come up with natural ingredients she could add to her deep conditioning treatment. Oops. "Thanks for the reminder," she said, as she picked up her quill a second time. She flipped through her textbook and began to look up ingredients that might work. Hmm...oh, that's it! Avocado oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter! The page she was reading said all three were useful in moisturizing!
Isla collected three different containers, one for each of her chosen ingredients. Once she'd collected them, she took them back to her workstation. "Professor?" she asked. "What do you think about these three? Would they work for a deep conditioning treatment? I researched a little, and it says all three are usually used in moisturizing products." Hopefully all of them added together wouldn't be too much, but according to her research, it should be okay. Quote:

| ~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes. Claudine was quite pleased that mint was allowed in her concoction. A sprig would be easy to secure given the fact that they were situated in one of the Greenhouses. But her attention was mainly drawn to the suggestions given to her. See? This was why she had wanted Rainwater’s attention. “Thanks, Professor,’’ was her grateful response. She had no experience in making these things, you see, so all the help was required. Now her notes were more detailed: - Salicylic Acid - main function is to remove scales and scalp build up
- Zinc Pyrithione - an antifungal as well as an ingredient that targets dead skin cells
- Ketoconazole - aimed at treating yeast infections on the scalp
- Smashed avocados
- Seaweed
- A sprig of mint
She hoped that if she missed anything that she would have a stroke of inspiration before it was too late. In the meanwhile, the second year moved to collect her tray from the machine. It was easily located because her tray was beside Eiji’s labelled one. Hers was carefully removed and brought back to her workstation. The spell that was to be used in the leaves was one that she had eventually mastered after much practice earlier in that term. “Pulveris.” A circular motion with the required vertical line drawn through the middle wand movement later, the leaves were fully powdered. Perfect.
Next would be to collect the ingredients. Claudine headed for the next room. |

Caledon Roth The Leaky Cauldron | Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll Heath was soooo confused! All this talk of hair care went right over his head. It was as if the professor had started speaking Huttese… though Heath probably would've understood him better if he had! If hair care was supposed to be easy to figure out, why was he still totally lost?
So… they were making their own hair products. Heath couldn't imagine himself ever using that skill outside of a classroom setting, but doing an activity was less scary than discussions. The problem was he had no idea where to start! He didn't know what his hair type was or what it needed. Maybe a dry shampoo, since his hair tended to turn flat and straw-like between washes? But did that happen because his hair was oily or dry? Or neither? Gah! He had no clue!
All Heath knew was that he wanted to get this done without drawing any more attention to himself, so for now, he was going to focus on the things he did know how to do, namely collecting the tubs and powdering the aloe. He collected two tubs and brought them back to his station, neatly labeling them as dry shampoo. After writing his name on the tubs, he donned his gloves and went to get his aloe leaves out of the dehydrator.
Ideally, Heath would've preferred to use a mortar and pestle for powdering. Wandwork was not his strong suit, especially in a heightened emotional state, and he didn't want to waste time or draw attention to himself with a bunch of failed spell attempts. Besides, there was something satisfying about grinding things into powder by hand, but the professor had said he preferred Pulveris. The directions on the board specifically said to use Pulveris, and that seemed to be what everybody else was doing. Heath decided his way wasn't worth the risk of trouble.
So how was he going to do this without completely messing up in front of everybody? Hmm… maybe if he did the same thing as when he cast Diffindo earlier? After a brief moment to get into character, Kylo Heath was back. He aimed his wand, making a decisive circle with a vertical line wand movement. "Pulveris!" he said sharply, and POOF! The aloe leaves turned to powder.
Now that he had the aloe powder, Heath needed to collect the rest of his ingredients, but what should he use? He pored over the information the professor handed out, focusing on the ingredients that had multiple uses since he still wasn't sure what hair type he had. When he was done, he came up with a list of possible ingredients:
Heath looked over his list. Was that too many ingredients? Not enough? Wrong ones? Was he anywhere close to doing this right, and more importantly, did he dare ask for help?

Now that Isla had everything planned out to the best of her ability, she was ready to move on. Looking up at the directions and noting that she'd made it to step four in the process, Isla began putting the ingredients together in the tub. Now to mix everything together!
As Isla mixed and mixed again, she thought about how exciting it was going to be to try out her new deep conditioning treatment! Hopefully she wouldn't turn her hair green or something, but at least if she did, she was sure somebody around here knew how to fix it! It was interesting to watch everything blend together. The color of the mixture even changed a time or two before it was a boring old creamy white. Interesting. She kind of thought it'd be green, but okay. As long as it worked!
Once everything was mixed about as good as she could get it, Isla sealed it in the tub. THERE. Now she and 'air tight' were best friends, just as Rainwater had said they'd be! So what now? Maybe she should jot down a few of her thoughts, since she had to write in her journal anyway. Quote:

| Unforgivably Cursed | adultescent Gunnar couldn't say that he was nearly as excited as Rainwater clearly was about hair care, but he was rather intrigued at the prospect of making his own natural hair care products. He could definitely appreciate the health benefits of plants. He wasn't sure why he hadn't thought of it before.
The seventh year wasn't sure exactly which type of product he needed - maybe the dry shampoo? - but he looked over his notes of the detailed instructions while he thought about it. Part of his final grade, huh? Yeah, he thought he'd make a dry shampoo since he did shower daily, but maybe he'd try some of those showers without washing his hair, even if that felt really strange to him.
So, what ingredients would he need then? Gunnar thought about this as he collected the tubs and then pulled the dried aloe leaves from the dehydrator. He had an idea to start with at least, but for now he needed grind down his leaves into a powder. Pulveris!

Tom had tried to figure out what type of hair he had but he hadn't really thought about it before, seriously why would anyone know what type of hair they had, all he knew was that he had hair and when he played football or rolled around in the mud that it got dirty and he had to wash it.
Tom had picked up his leaves and decided to do the spell. "Pulveris" he then did the wand movement and was happy when it worked, not he had to think of what type of hair he had, how was he supposed to know.

| ~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes. It took sometime but Claudine managed to secure all of her ingredients. Those like the seaweed and avocados, she put them on a tray but those complicated, big worded ingredients were in small containers which were then put on the tray. She moved back to the workstation where she got to work: the avocados were crushed, the seaweed cut into small pieces. Next, Claudine split the ingredients evenly into the two tubs, after keeping the dry and wet ingredients separate up until now. She supposed she would mix the ingredients with her gloves on. After all, they had been on all along.
The last thing that she added were a few chopped pieces of mint leaves; she figured that chopped leaves would release more scent Now, Claudine began to mix the ingredients in the first tub. Once she started, there was an overwhelming amount of scents that hit her: bits of an avocado aroma here, a host of mintiness there.
Once she thought that tub one was mixed well, the girl moved to tub two to repeat the process. |

WOW. Professor Rainwater really did know a lot about hair. Naya just sat back and soaked up all the knowledge. Even better though, they got to make their own hair products in class. This was exciting and Naya couldn’t wait to get started. Imagine making your own products. That could be a big money saver and you were tailoring the product to your own specific needs. It could also be a side gig for the business minded student. Just saying.
Anxious to get started, Naya knew right away what she would be making. A deep conditioner. She could certainly put that to good use. She took a moment to think about what ingredients would be the best for her hair. Aloe of course, and a couple of other things that immediately came to mind. While she continued to think about it, the fifth year reached down to retrieve two tubs from under her workstation.
Naya wrote her name on the tubs and labeled it Deep Conditioner. Then, she put the tubs to the side, donned her gloves and went to get her aloe leaves. Taking them from the dehydrator, she returned to her work station and took out her wand. She made a clockwise circle above the leaves, followed by a vertical line through the middle. “Pulveris”, Naya said, as she watched the leaves become finer and finer. She repeated the spell until the leaves looked properly powder-ized. Now it was time to start gathering her other ingredients. Naya had a pretty good idea of what she wanted, but she looked over the professor’s list of stock items before heading to the adjacent room.
