Located just south of the castle is a large body of water known as the Great Lake or the Black Lake. This is where the first years encounter the school for the first time when the Groundskeeper takes them there by boat. After seven years they will leave the castle, their individual house and their home behind as they sail back across the Great Lake to embark on new adventures.
If you decide to dip your toes in the water, be careful of the many magical creatures inhibiting the lake that might mistake a little student’s toe for a tasty treat. For in the Great Lake lives everything from merpeople to grindylows. Bartholomew Henry, the Giant Squid, however is not interested in nibbling on toes, but would much rather have someone tickle his tentacles while he soaks up some sun.
Why don’t you follow his lead and do the same? Do some homework in the sun heated grass, take that well deserved nap before Ancient Runes or catch up on that reading. Enjoy your time at the Great Lake!

With a bit of free time on his hands, Rowan decided to explore the grounds of Hogwarts. He had heard much about its beauty, and he had only gotten to see just a glimpse on his way in the other night. And so, with a cozy sweater and his white kitten on his shoulder (merlin, he still was struggling with a name), he was off to stumble upon wherever his feet decided to take him.
The crisp fall wind whipped around him, and he pulled the kitten off his shoulder and held her close to his chest, removing his scarf to wrap it around her tiny body (y'know, in case she was cold). Such a small baby.
As he walked with the kitten cradled in his arms, he found himself at the Great Lake. It was breathtaking with the autumn leaves blowing about and the colors starting to change. The boy couldn't help but smile as he sat down to take in the sights of the lake, the white kitten curled up in his lap, somehow asleep.
Tom was standing there, staring... seriously how on earth had someone built this next to the school or was it there and the founders got boats and came, there was so much mystery to this that he wasn't sure if he was dreaming.
He would love to swim in the lake one day or maybe throw small stones with friends to see which one could get there's the furthest, but for now he was just staring at the lake.
"ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT GENTLE DOWN THE STREAM!" He decided he would start singing since well it would be fun right and who didn't like a concert at a lake.

Cordelia was running around the lake as she did every day to stay in shape and get all her energy out. It was a time for mental processing too, something which she needed to do a lot recently. Her stream of thoughts was interrupted, however by the child who she recognized as one of the new Gryffindors screaming at the top of his lungs. ”MERRILY, MERRILY, MERRILY LIFE IS BUT A DREAM!” Sometimes the only thing you could do was scream-sing back, you know? Besides, she could use the distraction from the destructive worry that no one liked her.

Tom hadn't noticed the older girl, so when a voice came back to him he was a bit startled but he smiled when the older girl joined in, this was amazing, he was new here and already older students were singing with him. He gave the student a smile, he was sure he had seen her at the feast when he had been sorted into Gryffindor, she had been sat at the table already.
Tom looked down at the ground and decided to see if she would continue to sing with him, he thought for a moment as he rattled his brain for another song to sing. "BABY SHARK, Doo Doo Doo Doo, BABY SHARK!"

Cordelia smiled back at the younger boy, wondering if she thought she was insane to be belting out children’s songs at random without warning. She probably was insane, or in some way out of her right mind, but that had nothing to do with the random singing. Probably. The change in song was a bit confusing, but might as well go with it. ”BABY SHARK, doo doo doo doo doo doo, BABY SHARK doo doo doo doo doo doo, BABY SHARK doo doo doo doo doo doo, BABY SHARK!” If this was a challenge, he was an on. Why exactly they were doing this remained a mystery, but what was life without a little fun? Without quidditch she had to find some way of entertaining herself. All the moping around really wasn’t doing her any good.

Tom was trying his hardest not to laugh as she changed songs to the same song that he was singing, now he was going to try and confuse her again by changing songs. It was like she was trying to keep up but he wasn't going to be beaten by an older student.
"I'm Tom Simpson!" He shouted out to the other student, before he burst into song again. " Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O! And on that farm he had a..." He pointed towards his new friend, seeing which animal she would choose.

Oh, they were stopping for introductions now? ”Hi Tom! I’m Cordelia Winklebleck! My friends call me Dia.” No time for further conversation, it seemed. The game was afoot. She wasn’t going to let a firstie out-sing her, not without a fight anyway. Her turn to pick the animal, huh? ”COW! EE-I-EE-I-OH” To any observers, their battle of children’s songs must have looked absolutely ridiculous. Cordelia was never one to care much for what other people thought of her actions, most of the time, though. ”THE ITSTY BITSY SPIDER CLIMBED UP THE WATER SPOUT” His turn to try to keep up with her.

Tom was nearly in stitches but he wasn't going to let a four year beat him on nursery rhymes, when was the last time she had song these songs, well if she wanted a song battle, that was what she was going to get. "DOWN CAME THE RAIN AND WASHED THE SPIDER OUT!" He sang at the top of his voice. "Nice to meet you Dia!" He then turned to her as he tried to think about another song. "TEN GREEN BOTTLES SITTING ON THE WALL, TEN GREEN BOTTLES SITTING ON THE WALL!" Let's see if she could keep up with this, he laughed.

It was such a beautiful day that even Heath couldn't pass up the opportunity to spend some time outside. He wandered the grounds, his cat Rey bounding along at his side, until he came to the great lake. He stood still for several moments, just taking in the beauty of the water, until a high-pitched meep jerked him out of his thoughts. He looked down to find Rey pawing at his trouser leg. He laughed, knowing immediately what she wanted.
He pulled a small plastic ball out of his pocket and tossed it, watching as Rey sped after it. The little gray cat batted the ball around for a while, then picked it up in her mouth and brought it back. Heath smiled as Rey dropped the ball at his feet, looking up at him with an inquisitive mrp? Heath cleared his throat and said in a deep voice, "What you brought me today is, hmm, worth one quarter portion." And by quarter portion, he meant a couple of cat treats.
Heath watched as Rey gobbled up her snack. When she was done, he tossed the ball again, but this time Rey didn't run after it. Instead she darted in the opposite direction. Heath blinked confusedly. What?! Where was she going? "Rey!" he called, running after the gray cat. "Come back!"
He found Rey staring at another boy who looked about his own age. She looked up at the other boy with a meep before flopping onto her back in front of him. "There you are!" Heath said, stopping short of running into the other boy. "Don't go running off like-"
It was only then that he noticed he wasn't alone, and his voice trailed off. He flushed with embarrassment, nervously running a hand through his long dark hair. "i, uh..." His mind had gone blank, just like it always did when he tried to talk to someone he didn't know. What was he saying? Oh, yeah. Apologizing, right. "Sorry... is she bothering you?"

Sure Beauxbatons had a lake but it was NOTHING compared to Hogwarts and Carsyn could easily make herself comfortable out here. At least before the weather turned bitter cold and intolerable. There something about studying Transfiguration - or any subject - by the water that made it easier to comprehend than the library. That was when she heard singing, if one could call it that?
"Dia? What's going on?" She frowned, looking between her and the small first year Gryffindor whom she'd yet to learn his name yet.

Asher was ready. Now that all his homework (weeeeeell, most of it) was done, he had all the time in the world to do whatever he wanted. It may have been beneficial for him to spend these hours exploring the castle and figuring out where everything was so he didn't get lost so much, but he decided against it. There were more important things that needed to take priority. Like befriending the Giant Squid, which was something he still needed to do in spite of a handful of trips to the lake that ended up being rather uneventful.
But today was a new day, and the curly-haired boy was confident that he would be shaking that magnificent beast's tentacle. The sight of the boy was something to behold, but in his mind it was all part of being prepared. He waddled his way closer and closer to the bank of the lake, wearing swimming trunks, a tank top, goggles, and flippers. There was even a bubble around his nose and mouth, courtesy of one of the older Hufflepuffs, so he wouldn't have to hold his breath under water. He was ready.
Even though there were a few students out and about, Asher had his eyes set on the lake. He was looking for any signs of movement from a certain gigantic cephalopod. So far, nothing. But hope was not lost as he stepped into the lake, for now stopping once his knees were no longer above the surface.
Now, what was the best way to get the Giant Squid to come out? Hmm.

They were well into the new school year, and Isla still hadn't paid a visit to the lake. She'd technically been here before when the first years had made their traditional boat ride to the castle, but sightseeing had been the last thing on her mind that day. The lake had been one of the places she'd been looking forward to the most. Classes and homework had nearly devoured her time. Today was the day, though. There was still homework to be done, but truth be told, she was getting sick of all work and no play. She'd squeeze in some time before bed to do whatever homework was left.
For now, classes and homework were both in the back of her mind. Her pace picked up as she grew closer and closer to the lake, and pretty soon, she was there. It was everything she had hoped for and more. She spent the next minute getting a full panorama of the lake. Everything looked just as she'd imagined it would, except for...what in the name of Merlin was Asher doing? Her eyebrows narrowed inward, and without realizing it at first, she gravitated toward him. "Uhh, Asher?" she asked. Could he even hear her with that bubble around his head? She wasn't going to wade out there after him.
"What are you doing?" she continued, because whatever it was looked really fun and interesting, and she kind of wanted in on some of this fun he seemed to be having. She had no idea how to get that bubble around her head, though. The first year hung out by the edge of the water, lingering between wanting to dive on in and wanting to just watch and see the shenanigans.

In spite of all the prep work he had done for this moment, it slipped that boy's mind that he didn't know how to get the Giant Squid to reveal himself in all his glory. Should he float out to the middle of the lake and pretend he couldn't swim? Was it too late to sneak into the Great Hall and nab a chicken leg as a peace offering? Or did the squid respond to its own name? These were the questions that the Hufflepuff was mulling over right now in his mind.
But soon his train of thought was derailed when he heard his name -- even with a bubble around his head, he could hear just fine. For a moment Asher thought it was one of the lady professors and he was about to get scolded for breaking one of the million rules the school had, but the sight of Isla calmed him down instantly the moment he turned his head.
"Oh, hey!" he exclaimed, giving the Slytherin a wave. His brow, not that anyone could see it under his mop of hair, raised when his fellow first year asked what he was doing. Was it not obvious what he was up to? Maybe he needed to reveal his flippers...
And that he did. Raising one leg up and waved the flipper in her direction, accidentally sending a little water Isla's way. Whoops! He immediately returned back to his original stance, both feet under the water, and looked back out at the lake before returning his gaze to his friend. "I was hoping to meet the Giant Squid. Maybe see if he wanted a swimming companion for a bit."

Look at these kids. Firsties. Pffffffft. Thinking they can just sWiM OuT tO mEeT Bartholomew Henry. Bernadette shook her head and chomped another bite out of the apple she was eating. She was perched on a rock on the water's edge, bare feet dangling toward the water, and was just... watching. Watching these young'uns who were working on borrowed spellwork.
"He's out too deep for you, kid," she wisely, sagely, cockily warned the Hufflepuff. "You're wasting that bubble-head charm." Didn't it wear off after a certain amount of time? She'd read all about that one before she'd transfigured her book into a dinner plate.
As for Bernie, well, she already had a plan in place to meet Bartholomew Henry, and it didn't involve any dumb spells. But if this kid wanted to put on a show, she'd sit here and watch it. Might even open up some Bertie Bott's whilst she watched. Might even offer a few to the firstie girl she'd seen on the train, too.

When she finally managed to catch Asher's attention, Isla smiled and returned the wave. So that pretty much answered her question. A person's hearing wasn't affected by the Bubblehead Charm. She laughed when he splashed water her way. It was actually a welcoming interruption to her day, and she was only sorry that she hadn't brought along her own swimsuit. She'd pass on the flippers, though. She didn't even own any.
Waving his flippers at her still didn't answer her question, though. She didn't imagine most people went down to the lake with flippers and a Bubblehead Charm. Then he answered her question. The Giant Squid. Of course she knew about him, but she had no clue how to get him to rise to the surface. She only knew what she'd heard. "So I've heard two things about the squid," she said, edging closer to the lake but not getting in. "One is that he talks just like us, so you could try calling his name. The other is that he eats bread." She didn't know if she wanted to be in the water if and when he appeared, but this was a show she could stick around for.
At the sound of another voice chiming in, Isla turned to see Bernie sitting on a rock, watching them like they were in a show or something. She'd even brought along a snack. "So how do you get him to come to the surface?" she asked, although she was 99.9 percent sure the second year would give them a crazy answer just to sit back and watch them fall. She liked Bernie, and she even thought that they'd make good friends. She could so see the girl pranking them, though.

Yes, the mere sight of him was ... something else. He was just a first year, however, and didn't know any better. But one had to applaud him for at least dressing appropriately for a dip in the lake. The flippers were just an added bonus. If he had packed some floaties, he would've dragged them out to the lake too. On a different day of course; today was all about meeting the famous squid that his brother had told him so much about.
But apparently there were a few things about the squid that Asher didn't know. "I didn't know he liked bread. I would've snuck some out of the kitchens on my way from my common room if I had known," he responded with a shrug. "Do you know his name? My brother told me the squid was actually Godric Gryffindor in disguise, but I dunno if I really believe him..." The Hufflepuff learned rather quickly that Kenny had told many lies to him about Hogwarts, so he wasn't exactly sure what or who to believe anymore.
Speaking of Gryffindor, he and Isla weren't the only ones out and about. The boy gave the girl a look over. She didn't seem THAT much older, but maybe she knew a thing or two. She was right about that Bubblehead Charm — it was gradually beginning to fade, not that he noticed.
"What Isla said," he replied, looking out at the two girls from his standing position a few feet in the lake. "I was just gonna swim out a bit and wait around a bit and see if he showed up." If anything, he'd at least get a good swimming session in. "But if you have a better way of getting him to come out, then I'm game. What do we gotta do?"

Mmm, the squid liked bread. Bernie dug around in her bag and pulled out two sandwiches in a baggie. They were definitely not leftover from the train. "D'ya think Barty would like these?" she offered, dangling them out over the water for the boy to take. "Oh, his name is Bartholomew Henry, by the way," she answered his question, which wasn't directed to her, but which she couldn't resist sharing.
No, y'know, she hadn't heard the rumour about Godric Gryffindor disguising himself as a squid, but it was cool if so. She shrugged at the Hufflepuff's swimming idea. "I say go for it, but be sure to take the sandwiches with you. Then you can ask him to come visit ALL of us. He speaks English, I'm pretty sure." And this boy could do all the talking. She didn't really feel like getting her feet wet today. Plus, this rock was warmed by the sun and she had candy to eat.

Isla shook her head. "No, I don't. I didn't realize he was called something else other than 'The Squid'," she answered. Which was odd, because she knew he liked bread and spoke English, but yet she didn't even know his name? Hmm. Her eyebrows rose into the air at his next statement. "Godric Gryffindor in disguise? What makes him think that?" Did the squid carry around a sword or something? Wear scarlet and gold? Not that squids typically wore clothes, but they also didn't usually have names, eat bread, or speak English either.
Bernie...randomly had some bread in her bag? Okay, then. Whatever worked. Even though her question was directed toward Asher, Isla nodded. "I think it's worth a try," she answered. Besides, now that they were talking about this squid so much, Isla wanted to see it. If bread was what it took, then so be it. Also, his name was Bartholomew Henry? What a mouthful! And who on earth had given him that name? "Aren't there grindylow in this lake?" she thought to ask. If Asher was just going to dive on out there, he should probably know that he might have some visitors.
The first year kicked off her shoes and socks and waded out to maybe the first foot or two of water. She wasn't going for a swim, but a nice wade would be cool. Also, if the squid was going to make an appearance, she wanted a good view of the action!

Asher glanced back from his friend to the Gryffindor girl and back again. So much information about the Giant Squid, and here they were squid-less. But he figured it was better to get all of their bases covered. Anything to up their chances of meeting the squid, err, Bartholomew Henry was more than okay with him!
"Bartholomew Henry," he repeated, making a few long strides in the water to grab the sandwich baggie from the Gryffindor. By the time he made it over to her, that Bubblehead Charm had fully run its course. He didn't notice that, however; he was a bit preoccupied with examining the sandwiches. They seemed ... old? Buuuuuuuut food was food, right? "Thanks!"
Asher shrugged about the whole squid-in-disguise thing. "Not sure why Kenny told me that Bartholomew Henry was secretly Godric Gryffindor. Maybe just an old rumour? Or maybe he's just messing with me..." He was just going off what he was told. He was just eleven after all. There was so much for him to learn and all that. "But we can know for sure if Bartholomew Henry shows up, and we can ask whatever else we wanna know."
The boy then started to tread back to his original position in the lake, sandwiches in hand. He faced Isla when she mentioned grindylows. "Yeah, they're in this lake," he replied. But there was no concern in his voice. "They shouldn't be this close to the surface though. They tend to stick to weed beds at the bottom of lakes." At least that's what all the books he read about water creatures said, and he wasn't planning on going that far down to meet them.
"Could you both keep watch? Blast them away and all that should they show up? Uhh ... just in case?" He clearly didn't have his wand on him and was too young to die.
Stella needed a break from studying, besides she was tired of being stuck in the castle. She needed a break to clear her sanity before she completely went mad. Although she wanted to make good grades on her OWLs she knew she had to take a break from all the studying, was she over doing it? Nah... she still had time for herself Oceanus and her friends. Although she was glad to be taking a break, she definitely needed it.
Although she didn't know where she was going, her feet seemed to be guiding her. Lost in her own little world, she wondered down to the lake snapped back into reality as the fall wind rustled through her hair she smiled. This was one of her favorite time of the year, although honestly she loved every seasons about the same, but she probably loved Fall more then any of them. Taking her sketchbook out she looked at the lake and smiled before flopping underneath a tree and started drawing.
Her hand drawing away she looked up every so often to make sure she gotten every detail coloring and shadows right, she was a perfectionist when it came to her drawings, she wanted them to look exactly how she seen them. Lost in drawing, she hummed to herself looking up from her drawing once again. Hm... draw the people in or leave them out? Hm... it was how she was truly seeing it, but she really didn't want people she didn't know in her sketch.

It seemed like most of his peers were already in the swing of studying - everywhere Jó looked, some fifth year or other was already stressing about their OWLs, and he just wanted to remind them all that they had most of the year to go yet. He, of course, had barely cracked a book since returning to school, because he, of course, had more important things to do.
Except right then, his list of important things to do had run out, and Józef found himself wandering the grounds listlessly. Until he saw Stella. With a grin, he bounded over, flopping onto the grass next to her and unapologetically disturbing her sketching.
"Draw me like one of your French girls."

Humming a song stuck in her head no thanks to her good friend Jó who was singing it at the top of his lungs, out of key but still better then the fat lady by far. Him and Oceanus were always able to make her laugh so hard that she cries, which was something that she needed as well. Stella was stressing over their OWLs but like Rylee told her, it's basically everything that they already learned so no sweat right? She wasn't going to stress over them, she was going to have fun.
In the mist of her finishing up drawing the leaves she felt a presence next to her which made her snap back into reality. Looking at Jó she laughed turning into a the page of her sketchbook getting her pencil. "But you're not laying down, how boring!" Laughing she turned to him. "But I'll draw you, it could be fun been awhile since I drawn someone."

Bernie didn't really know what to think about this rumor about Godric Gryffindor, except that it didn't make sense to her that her house founder would be a giant squid, like, wouldn't he be more like a lion, or a hippogriff, or something cool like that? So she just kinda shrugged and popped a few more jelly beans in her mouth as she watched the Hufflepuff and the Slytherin.
Mhmmhmm, yep, she'd watch out for grindylows. "And merpeople," Bernie mumbled through a mouthful of candy before she swallowed it. "Watch out for the merpeople, and be polite to them if you see them, and any seahorses or fish you see. But save the sandwich," as old and moldy as it was, "for um, Barty."
Yeah, that was all the advice she had. She'd wait till he dived under before she talked to Isla about what the kid's chances of survival were.

Jó was glad that Stella seemed happy to see him, although admittedly he probably wouldn't have noticed if she'd felt otherwise. Her response did make him frown though, the confusion creasing his forehead dramatically. "Not laying down? What does that mean?" Was now the time to admit that he didn't actually have any idea what he was referencing? To tell her that he'd just heard a lot of people say that phrase and decided that it sounded interesting?
No. Now was not the moment to admit that Józef Kowalski had actually not seen the Titanic. Nor had he heard of the film he was referencing. Uncultured? Yes. Unabashed? Also yes.
"Remember to make me look as good as I do in person."
