Default Detention: Curtis Fuller

Classroom 3C was where this afternoon's detention would be taking place. Shortly after lunch on a perfectly clear Sunday while everyone else lounged around and enjoyed their weekend. Mistakes had been made, but this was about the only time he could fit this detention as the week ahead was going to be busy.

By now, the Headmaster had already ranted spoken to the boy's father and was feeling somewhat less irritated about the whole thing.

The classroom looked typical. Desks all lined in neat rows. Nothing of particular interest sitting on his desk and the man in his chair waiting for his detention ward to arrive. He still had another five or so minutes to get here. One could only hope the Slytherin had learned something about punctuality in the last few days.

Once could hope.

OOC: This is a detention thread for Fuller-Thompson/Charely Potter. Please don't post in here unless you've been told to do so.

It was Sunday and Curtis did NOT want to be in detention. He figured just an after hour lesson would be good enough, but nope, the Headmaster insisted on giving him detention on one of their usual days off. This. Was. Not. Fair. Curtis pouted at the circumstances. He strongly believed that he didn't need to be told what he did was wrong, he figured it out, and decided on his own terms when he would not do it again. What was so wrong with that? Apparently everything. Why did he have to cater to other's time when no one catered to his own time? Curtis had all these questions that weren't worth the time to even publically ask. His father made him well aware on what he needed to do.

So he was supposed to be arriving here after lunch, right? Yes. But a specific time was given, so Curtis couldn't take his sweet time eating. He took an apple to munch along the way, he wasn't going to be late, he just didn't like to be too early. Being early meant more time of his precious time wasted.

By the time Curtis reached the classroom door, it was less than a minute before he could be considered late. He remembered to knock this time before opening the door to come right in. "Hello Headmaster, you're looking well today." He was going to be nice this time, with his best teeth-showing grins. "I'm not late this time, am I?" He briefly scanned for a trash bin to throw the remaining bits of the apple he carried in his hand.

Oy vey.

Piers saw a lot of himself in his child. Too much, in fact. And that, plus Piers and his husband babying Curtis his whole life and homeschooling him for too long... led them here. To detention with the Headmaster. At the beginning of the term.

It was a little embarrassing, to say the least. Piers loved his son, deeply, but the kid had a mind of his own and was probably only just getting started. Which was why Piers had already threatened to send the boy home back to his father. Javy was better at disciplining him. It was too bad Javy hadn't come back to Hogwarts too...

Piers walked up to the room where Curtis' detention was being held and rounded the corner of the hall just as Curtis was knocking on the door. Well, at least he was knocking this time, which he was sure was just to spite the Headmaster. "Sit down, Curtis," Piers muttered as he put his hands on his son's shoulders and gently pushed him inside the classroom. He gave Trent an apologetic look and stood off to the side, letting the other man do the leading.

Malachi inclined his head in return greeting to the boy just moments before his attention was drawn to the apple core. “Are you....is this....” The Headmaster looked to the Charms Professor with incredulous eyes before turning to his son once more. Detention had barely begun and the man was feeling petty enough to give a second one. “Explain to me why you thought it appropriate to take that with you.”

Forget why are you here or anything equally along detention standard. The boy was reporting for detention and thought to do so with food? “It never occurred to you to vanish or otherwise discard it before turning up to detention? We’re not having a second lunch, this is a formal school occasion. Much like you do not take food to classes. Why do you need to be told that?”

As of meeting him, there was a lot the Headmaster wondered about regarding this boy who seemed to not know many things...that most should.

Perhaps the Slytherin was taking it all for granted. Breezing through with no real sense that things could go wrong. Perhaps he thought he’d come and write a few lines, “chill” then leave. What, in his demeanour during his lesson, would lead this boy to believe the man was “chill” when it came to discipline was beyond him but this one....this one.

“Does it ever occur to you that at a school there is protocol to be followed?”

He’d ease off on the questions, just so the boy could answer them before he decided if he’d continue going off.

Curtis barely got a chance to discard the apple core before his father turned up. What? Oh great. Now he's here too. Don't get Curtis wrong, he loved being about his dad, but he thought that he was being trusted to handle this on his own. It hadn't even been a day and the word went around that his father was a Professor. Not even leaving out "Thompson" when he signed his name deterred expectations with him. He quickly placed the apple core in the trash before sitting down. His mood already was turning south.

What? Curtis stared at the Headmaster. He's doing this on purpose. Curtis was getting sick of being thought of as stupid just because he didn't think or behave like every other student. So far a lot of students followed these Professors without question. So mindless. He pitied them. "I was still hungry and didn't want to be late since there weren't any bins in the hallways." Curtis said as calmly as possible. He wanted to retrieve that apple core and throw it at the wall... but his father was right there and chances are his words were going to be twisted either way. As for why he didn't vanish it? Isn't Vanishing a fifth-year learning spell? He could feel his father's eyes wanting to shoot daggers if he ever pointed that out. Wasn't he taught to correct others on minor mistakes? How come only the adults were allowed to correct the younger ones but not the other way around? "I haven't perfected the spell and would hate to be late because I accidentally blew up something in the process." Welp, his tongue was held long enough.

Curtis didn't understand what direction these questions were leading to other than making him look stupid. His dad wasn't going to speak up cause this was his boss. Maybe he even agreed with him. Was he supposed to feel guilty about this? "Yes," Curtis replied to that last question. Now, where was this leading to?

Oh, good. Thirty seconds in and there was already an issue. It made Piers wonder HOW they had raised him to be so disrespectful. It astounded him, actually. And he was torn, because he knew Curtis was.. rather fragile, but he also needed to learn to respect the castle and the authorities of the Headmaster and the Staff.

"Curtis," Piers interjected gently, but also in a slightly scolding tone. "When the Headmaster, or any staff member for that matter, is reprimanding you, you say 'yes, sir' or 'yes, ma'am', you don't make excuses. You think about why what you've done is wrong and what you should have done instead." And if that meant not eating an apple at all, then that's what it meant. Piers glanced at Trent apologetically, but hoped he would understand - this was detention, yes, but it was also parenting.

Anyway. Merlin help them all.

”The Headmaster....was anything but amused. He stared blankly as the boy made excuse after excuse and entirely missed the point of what had been said. Piers, he also spared a look but there was some understanding mixed in. Mostly, the man was relieved he hadn’t yet had to give his own son a detention. Kale would cry. Accuse him of not loving him. He would expel him and tell Tally about it only after he was home. It would’ve just been messy.

This, he imagined must’ve felt messy for the Charms Professor, but no worries, he was here to be the firmer one.

“It seems to me that if you’d wanted the luxury of being able to stick around for more food, you wouldn’t have so willingly given away your free time.” In his experience, students often didn’t think far enough ahead to realize that detention revoked their basic privilege of having free time to do as they pleased. “You ate lunch.” He’d seen the boy during the last period. “And could easily have waited til after detention, or at dinner to have more. Detention means you don’t get the choice of doing things on your own terms. The moment you have detention, you are on the terms of the professor conducting your detention.” He would spell it out as this one clearly didn’t get it and he’d rather avoid such aggravation in future.

For his part, his level of maturity had long removed the man’s need to roll his eyes when he heard bouts of absurdity. “It was merely an example of ways an apple can be gotten rid of before arriving at detention. I note you didn’t bother to comment on the part where I said you could’ve thrown it away. Something that was quite within your power but, by all indication, beyond your scope of thinking.” For surely if the boy had thought to simply throw it away, he would have done so. Surely he wouldn’t have intentionally walked in with it just to further frustrate his Headmaster. No. The boy would never. It was clearly an oversight from underuse.

“Out. We’ll do this again. You will get school right. We will practice here, today, in detention.” Malachi set the clock on the wall back by two minutes then looked to the boy again. “Hurry, or you’ll be late for detention and we can’t have that.”

Curtis just stared at the Headmaster and then his father. Something wasn't clicking with him as he listened to everything they said and to be frank... This doesn't make any sense. They ask me a question and I answer and still get scolded as if I'm lying. Why bother asking? Curtis had long suspected that adult teachers didn't care and just wanted kids to do everything they say without question and expected them to be psychic. I don't believe this. This was very tiring for him to go through this again. If anything, he was learning that he was doing a poor job of getting away with things.

Curtis' arms folded against his own chest when his dad spoke with him. He haaated when he went this route with speaking so softly with command, something about the tone was weighing heavily on him. He couldn't even look up anymore. No, he wasn't feeling guilty, he just didn't like this power. He couldn't fight it. And he couldn't stay quiet at the Headmaster interjecting again on his intelligence.

"Stop saying that I'm stupid!" ..... There had to have been an awkward moment of silence just then. "... Sorry. Sir. That was rude of me and I should have control of myself." Curtis said, it may have sounded mocking but he did try to not make it sound like that. He knew he had to apologize but he just didn't feel like he should have to if it wasn't going to be genuine. How his train of thought lead this way was anyone's guess. But.. his dad was right there and he didn't want to be going back home over his poor performance. "...Sorry." Did that sound more genuine?

So what now? He was banished from the school? Oh. His second chance. This was going to be like his lack of lesson earlier, wasn't it? Curtis wanted to see if he could get a reaction if he went up and threw the desk over and kicked some things. Something to wipe off that blank look off the Headmaster's face like earlier. There was a sense of satisfaction at turning the tables over.

When he got up, however, that urge was wiped when he imagined the look on his papa's face when he hears about this. "Yes, Headmaster, sir." He was only going through with this for the people who he actually had some respect for. Maybe he did need them around. So he walked calmly out the door.

Two minutes, huh? Was he suppose to knock again or just head all the way back to the Great Hall and speed back down here? No, that would be a trap, wasn't running in the halls against the rules too? Maybe he had to wait or maybe this was just some secret lesson for him to see what it's like to be a little bit early. Whatever the case, he was going to roll with this. So with around a minute and a half seconds left, Curtis knocked on the door firmly but without aggression.

Well, if anyone had wondered at any point if they were going to go easy on him because he was the kid of the Charms Professor... that idea had been squashed. If anything, Piers was grateful that Trent wasn't going easy on him. Sometimes your own kids just didn't listen to you and it took other adults to knock some sense into them. Although, he did kind of worry how Curtis would take i-

.... Ah.

Like that.

At the sudden outburst, Piers grimaced slightly and closed his eyes for a moment. Thankfully, Curtis apologized, which was already a step in the right direction, but... yikes. His eyes went to Trent to see how he was going to handle it, offering him yet ANOTHER apologetic look, and also hidden in that look was 'please don't think I'm bad at parenting'.

If the boy expected him to flinch at his sudden, loud and point proving outburst, he had better learn to try harder than that. When you were Headmaster of Hogwarts, you found many shocking things on a daily basis. A teenager too deep inside his own feelings to listen and understand what people were saying was barely a blip on his radar of horrors.

As such, the man watched in silence as the boy apologized then exited. He would not delay him with explanations for if the boy did walk back in late, he would be punished. Best let him be on his way so he could hurry back. All it took was walking out then re-entering.

When the boy left, Trent looked to his father with...perhaps it was sympathy. “Has he always been like this?” If so, why would Piers bring him here? Beauxbatons was accepting students and he was certain Desmarais would’ve had a better time of this except not really.

“Enter.” Malachi thought to remind him that it was detention and he had no need to knock when he was instructed to be there but as it was a polite enough gesture coming from the Slytherin who lacked a lot of it, the Headmaster remained silent on the matter.

He waited for him to enter before saying his next words. “In future, it might do to listen for understanding rather than listening to fire back. I haven’t once called you stupid. Not here, not back in my lesson. What I have done is tell you in both scenarios that your actions imply you are either disrespectful or not thinking as clearly as you out to be before acting. Your outburst just now only proves that further and it won’t do you any favours in this castle or anywhere else for that matter.” Would he properly hear him this time? It was yet to be seen but the man wouldn’t hold his breath based on what he’d seen so far.

“Greet your Professor, in this case professors then have a seat.” Malachi had been very serious about them modelling school life. “To begin, explain to Professor Fuller-Thompson why you turned up to class late despite my warning just the night before. You seem to feel justified, so let’s hear it. It must be an earth shattering excuse with your level of entitlement that’s accompanied it.” Because, up to this point, he STILL hadn’t said what made him late, nor had he apologized for it.

This man was LYING, Curtis deduced. He was backtracking and changing words to justify what he implied. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU SAID AND MEANT. The way Curtis took information and ran with it seemed to hit a nerve. At this point, however, Curtis figured out that there was no point left in speaking his mind. He just wanted to get out of here and go about his business. This was incredibly boring and the chances are his remaining patience would explode again. When he had entered in, he listened to everything said. He didn't believe half of it, but he listened.

From what he was seeing between the two, his own actions was only affected his father. The Headmaster was not reacting at all. It took a moment before it clicked. This Headmaster wasn't trying to hurt him. He was trying to hurt him and his father. It made Curtis mad thinking about it, but now he saw why he was the boss. This power was manipulating. Manipulating. Such underlying power. Curtis then smiled as if something switched in him. Briefly though, since he had a feeling he'd be screamed at for not taking this seriously. Oh no, he was being serious now. Serious is learning about this technique.

Greeting, that was easy. He never failed at that. "Good day, Headmaster and.." He needed a moment to not call him dad this time. "Professor Fuller-Thompson." Walking over to the seat, he dumped himself in before joining his hands together into a closed fist resting over the desk. He wanted a model student, he was getting one.

"Thank you, Headmaster, for the second chance. Professor Fuller-Thompson, I am sorry for being late to the Headmaster's class. I don't have a good enough reason but the truth is I had forgotten his warning the night before and misjudged my timing on when to arrive. I wanted to be on time and not early and as you can see that didn't work out and I only have myself to blame for not showing the respect by being late." Curtis said before a bright grin appeared on his face, teeth showing and all. Good thing about apples was making smiles seem even brighter than usual. "I apologize to you as well Headmaster for not having an earth-shattering excuse and wasting your time with this." He had no hopes on them believing this, but they asked for it and he was delivering it. Now, how would they spin this? He wondered.

Has he always been like this? You mean, like his father had been when he was in school except maybe a little bit worse??? "Errr," Piers hesitated... and then nodded. "Yeah, kinda." Always questioning authority. Always thinking authority figures were out to ruin his life. Always kind of acting like a five year old... Yeah. He had kind of always been like that.

But did he love him? Absolutely. It was a work in progress.

Piers watched his son as he walked back into the classroom, silently PRAYING that he would do the right thing and not talk back and not screw this up even more for himself. He nodded at him when he addressed him, understanding very well that it was odd to have him refer to his father as Professor. But it was what it was.

And it was... well... It was full of baloney, to be honest. He knew Curtis was just saying what he knew they wanted him to say. He couldn't really blame him, but at the same time, he knew that grin all too well and knew that it usually meant he didn't give a flying fiddle about his apology.

"Perhaps you can aim to be a couple minutes early next time, eh?" Could he do that? for HIM?

Always? And neither the man nor his husband sought to correct that? In a few years, the boy would be off in the real world and in the real world, behaving like a two year old when you were expected to be grown was certainly not tolerated. The Slytherin was only setting himself up for failure—not thinking, as the man had said to him twice already.

Once Curtis got into explaining, the Headmaster was starting to rethink some of his assessment of him. He would add irresponsible to the mix. Didn’t want to be early. Wanted to be on time? On time was late. Early was on time. But the man would pick his battles. One day, he wouldn’t be the one to employ him and he wouldn’t be the one to support him should he flunk out of all his jobs because of his rotten attitude and entitled outlook. Should his father wish to instruct him on the ways of the real world, he was free to but as it stood, the man had enough to nitpick and didn’t need more for the boy to backtalk him with.

That smile, the grin, he wasn’t buying it for a second. Mostly because this wasn’t his first rodeo. He’d been teaching for years. He had his own children. He used to be a teenager. Did he care? So long as the boy was never late to class again, no. Honestly he didn’t. It wasn’t his sincerity that the man required, it was his punctuality.

But it would seem the deadpan would be going nowhere any time soon.

“We really will have to start at the very basics, won’t we? Settle in, Piers. It looks like we’ll be here for a while.” Because of THAT apology. The apology that told him the boy still didn’t get it.

”A diagram, perhaps. It may help you follow along better as listening doesn’t appear to be your strong suit.” It was either his listening or his critical thinking skills. The Headmaster no longer cared to know which. They would simply start from scratch.

Malachi places a quill and parchment before the boy on the table then moved over to the chalkboard and gave it a tap with his wand. The question appeared
Quote:
  1. Why do people apologize for being late?
  2. What are they apologizing for?
  3. What aren’t they apologizing for?

He stepped back so the boy and his “sorry I didn’t have an earth shattering excuse”—as if THAT was what he was meant to be sorry for—could read it.

“Answer. I like lists. I’ll help you out under what they aren’t apologizing for, you can add “not having an earth shattering excuse”.”

This.. Was... Madness... Curtis' cheeky grin only faltered for a fraction of a second as a quill and parchment appeared before him. Looking at his dad helped slightly. Only slight because he didn't understand why his dad was not sticking up for him at some parts. I apologized and didn't throw anything. I was only late and said thank you instead of an I'm sorry and I get this detention? Wasn't getting thrown and nearly getting brain damage punishment enough? Earlier he understood that a Professor's place was below Headmaster and they must follow.. but still. Curtis sighed slowly as he released his hands to take the quill. I wonder if this will hurt me writing it? He shrugged, not caring one way or another.

Curtis looked back up at the questions as his smile fell slowly to no expression. Then he looked back onto the paper with a thoughtful looking expression as he began writing. He took a few moments to consider, should he really write what they want to hear or what they expect him to say? He decided being phony wasn't going to work at all and they wouldn't believe him anyway, he deduced.

Quote:
  1. Why do people apologize for being late? Because they have to otherwise it's considered impolite.
  2. What are they apologizing for? For being late, wasting the Professor's time, and offending them with their own mistakes or decisions.
  3. What aren’t they apologizing for? For not having an earth shattering excuse.
Curtis then set the quill down. Were these the answers they were looking for? Probably not, but at least I am being honest.

Piers wasn't a bad parent, okay? They just had a very strong willed, extremely challenging child. It wasn't like they hadn't TRIED to correct his actions before letting him come to Hogwarts. It was at this point that Piers was wondering if they had let him come too soon. He still didn't seem ready.

"Please... Curtis, take this seriously," Piers said as his son began to write down his answers. Then he pulled up a chair off to the side and sat down because they were probably going to be there for a while.

It really did seem like they would be there for a while, didn't it?

Leaning over to take a look at the questions, Malachi could see it and it only made him shake his head. The man took the parchment for a moment, summoned a quill and made a few marks himself before handing it back to the Slytherin boy.

"I gave you that last one. You're meant to think of others on your own. The first is also plainly missing the point. Try again." He did say he liked lists. Giving one answer was hardly going to cut it. "The second needs elaboration and more responses."

And the longer he took to get this all right was the longer they'd be here.

The longer Curtis sat here, the less he was understanding the point of this exercise. When the paper he got was marked wrong on two questions, he looked right back up. First looking at his father, who.. nope, he couldn't even put into words on what he was thinking. How long have they been here? Hours? The amount of time he spent staring at the paper felt like an eternity before finally, he looked right back at the Headmaster.

"I believe I don't understand what you're asking of me to write, Headmaster." Scribbling over what he had marked as wrong as he spoke. "These questions are very vague to me as they expect me to know what a person in this scenario who actually cares is thinking during this. Since I don't really care and can't read minds I can only make an educated guess on these questions.... Sir." It's like they want me to change how I think. I can't do that. Wasn't I dragged here to learn something? Suddenly, it felt as if a shadow had cast over.

"I don't understand the last question at all, Headmaster. How am I supposed to know what all they aren't apologizing for? Not having an excuse? Not caring? That'd be too many for me to list." To the average person, they'd probably stop there with their frustration. Stop to ask questions, seem to put more effort and maybe even apologize for taking so long? That was how things usually went... But... what was Curtis going to do now? Well...he took the paper to crumple it up and threw it at the door.

Uh oh..

"That's how much I really care! I'm sorry I was late, okay! But you don't even care that I didn't understand and now just want to humiliate and lock me up!" Curtis could feel something clouding his vision and it was warm and wet running down his cheeks. "Well, I'm not stupid and I actually wanted to be in your class and learn! That's why I thanked you! But you don't care. You're just a big MEANIE!!" Curtis screamed that last word at the top of his lungs. Talk about an awkward moment of silence.

Now if there was any shred of dignity left, Curtis should have gone over to grab that paper and then apologize. But instead.... he just got up from the table and went over to a corner with his back facing them before sliding down into a fetal position.

What happens now?

Curtis had had a good life growing up. He didn't always see that, like most teenagers, but he really did. He was spoiled. Probably too spoiled. But Piers and Javy had made a conscious effort to give him all the love he deserved and more, while still trying to raise him as a decent human being who didn't take everything for granted. And it was in those last moments that Piers was wondering if he had failed as parent. Because he had never.... ever taught him that it was okay to talk to anyone like that, especially authority figures and ESPECIALLy the friggin' Headmaster. That man probably thought Piers was crazy for bringing up his kid like this, or for raising an actual teenager that acted like a four year old.

Honestly, it astounded him too. Piers didn't raise his son to be this way.

Which meant... that there could be something very wrong that was hiding beneath the surface. And it worried him. After trying to interrupt Curtis a few times, unable to stop his growing rampage, Piers stood up from his chair and walked over to him to try and calm him down, right as he finished his little tantrum and ran to the corner of the room.

Piers froze, torn between apologizing to the Headmaster, consoling his son, and yanking his son OUT of there and sending him home. All of which he wanted to do, but he didn't know which one was top priority. Oh, and another thing to add to the list: talk to his husband about how Curtis was still not sociably ready for the public. Great.

The charms professor gave a look to Trent and then went over to the corner where Curtis sat, facing away from them. "Curtis," he said gently, but still firmly. He put a hand on his son's shoulder. "You're going home. We need to take some time away, okay?" Piers crouched down next to his son and looked back at the Headmaster, figuring he'd probably at LEAST suspend Curtis anyway, and there was no way Piers wanted his kid running around like this at school any longer.

That was certainly coming up to being the last straw. This last tantrum. This last act of demonstration that he couldn't appropriately regulate his own emotions and act with common sense. Malachi may have pointed out that if he didn't understand the questions, he could've asked for clarification rather than crumpling paper and yelling.

That if he didn't know what to write, they could've discussed it together.

The fact his only course of action was to explode and behave in the least acceptable manner was all the answer the Headmaster needed. He watched, more irked than he'd admit in the moment, when Piers walked over to baby the boy but remained where he was, leaning against the table. The boy's tears did nothing to sway him but the screaming, the yelling. Oh yes, this detention was quite over. Piers had seen it, too.

[b]"Go back to dorm. Pack your things. You'll be leaving tonight. You will go home. You will think about your actions. You and your parents will have a talk about what is and isn't appropriate behaviour at a school. About what is an appropriate reaction. Or maybe you won't, but the next time you step back inside Hogwarts, you will behave in more mature manner than you do now or you will find another school. One that will put up with your senseless tantrums and entitled behaviour. I suggest you think carefully--with someone else. Not on your own. On your own, you've proven unable to employ critical thinking to even the simplest situations."[b/] Didn't understand questions so threw things and screamed. Yes. Quite the thinker, this one.

"Take a break. A long break. You may return at the beginning of the new semester in January at which time we'll re-evaluate your readiness to be at Hogwarts with your parents present. I suggest you do some serious soul searching and growing up in this time." Or not.

"Go, now."
