The arena is decked out and ready for the evening’s proceedings. The lights are low with blue bell flames on torches as the main source of light. A large stage stands in the middle of the room, ready for all those who will eventually take their position upon it and demonstrate their talent in the noble art of the duel.
The previous destruction of the arena has been taken care of. The seats for those who wish to watch the matches have been repaired and there isn’t a blasted hole in sight.
Headmaster Trent stands by the further end of the stage awaiting your arrival.
A small, black board stands next to him but there’s thus far nothing written on it. Step lively, there’s a lot to be covered before the duelling begins.
OOC: Welcome to the second DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

Naya arrived for Defense Against the Dark Arts class and YESSsssss! Something that she never thought would happen had happened. She was the first to arrive to class. Though she was never late to class...........yet, she never seemed to get there very early. But today was a new day and she was ready for whatever.
Entering the arena, Naya gave an enthusiastic, “Hello Headmaster”. This was going to be an exciting day. More dueling tips and things to learn. Duels to watch. Yep. Naya was all in. Since she was first, she could pick her spot and she did. Naya put down her bag and waited for the next group of students to arrive. This was going to be awesome.

He was ready for this. He was ready to duel. Walking into the room, the dimmed lights casting a rather ghostly shadow across his face, he quickly headed towards one of the seats near the only other student (Naya), ready for the lesson to start. Not wanting to seem rude, he gave Headmaster Trent a smile “Good evening Headmaster”. Seeing as nothing had been written on the blackboard, he sat there and waited for the lesson to being.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Minjae was busy taking off his very expensive watch from his right wrist as he entered the classroom, only looking up from his task for a split second to see who else was there already and once he saw Ewan he waved at the Prefect. "EWAN HI!" Finally able to get the band off , the Hufflepuff put the watch deep inside of his pocket and walked in further.
"Headmaster Trent! Did someone tell you about Salazar Slytherin roaming around in the dungeons?" he called as the man was on the other side of the stage "....He was very rude. Told me to bow before him and all that" he 'pffft' and rolled his eyes. Like Minjae was going to bow for anyone when they were not in a duel! ....Well, his grandparents were an exception.
Anyway, he was pumped up for todays lesson and hoped that they weren't going to waste too much time before they could duel.

Claudine had made sure that she had signed up for the Duelling Club when the announcement had been made. As a second year, she wasn’t very adept with her spell work as yet and thought that every opportunity that she was given to change that, she would snap it up. Also, she wanted to duel a professor and secretly hoped it would be Schmoe.
“Good afternoon, Headmaster.’’ Without any further greeting, she proceeded to find a place to be. Was she nervous about duelling? No. In fact, it sent slivers of anticipation waving through her. Claudine was more than looking forward it. While she waited and her thoughts on the activity to come, she absently stared at a bluebell torch, watching the flame flicker.
The first thing Catherine did when she entered the room was to look around to see exactly what it looked like so she could decide where she was going to go next. The second thing was to locate the Headmaster and give him a polite nod as a means of greeting because that was what she did instead of speaking up unnecessarily. No, thanks.
The Ravenclaw was slightly annoyed that she had gotten there before her people and decided to wait somewhat close but not too close to the stage. Close enough that she wasn't standing out by being on her own, but also not too close that she might get hit by a poorly aimed spell or question.
And no, she hadn't signed up for duelling that year. She had her reasons.
Catherine side-eyed all those who were already there and started wondering who would be duelling that day and how said duels would possibly go.
Hmmm...

Isla was actually excited about another Defense Against the Dark Arts class. Some classes could feel more like classes, while other classes felt more...well, fun. She always had fun in Trent's classes. However, as soon as she stepped into the arena, she froze. Wait...they were actually going to get in the arena and duel one another, weren't they? Why had she thought they'd just have a class in here?
Isla was TERRIFIED of dueling.
"Hello, Headmaster," she said, a slight tremble in her voice. She knew it was super silly to be this terrified of in-class dueling, but she was. She just couldn't help it. She had almost no confidence that she could face off against someone and fire off spells just as quickly as the dummies in class did. Nevertheless, she hung around. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all...

Phoebe's previous experiences in Defense hadn't gone very well for her, and she wasn't eager to be back in front of the Headmaster. Embarrassing herself. Again. She slumped through the door and peeked at the set up through long strands of her hair, but she didn't react outwardly to the arena.
Inwardly, though, there was a lot of cringing.
"Hullo, Headmaster, sir." A subdued Phoebe James took her place near Bernie.

Lucas was dreading this, uh, lesson more than he dreaded regular Defence lessons. While he liked Trent as a professor and a headmaster - even if they couldn’t see eye to eye on certain points - he....... was less than happy about the subject itself. And even less happy about the duelling part. A part of him knew that he wasn’t going to succeed in this, uh, class but an even larger part of him knew that it was still important.
And that was why he was here.
Pausing by the door, the Prefect took a moment to look around the setup of the room, a look of clear dread displayed on his face. This wasn’t fun. This wasn’t going to be fun. In fact, it was only making him subconsciously fidget with his hands more than he normally would. Mostly to give his hands something to do.
"Hello, Headmaster," he said quietly, shuffling forwards and away from the door. Smile? Not today. Because he was only just focusing on something else properly. There was a STAGE in the room. A STAGE!

Nina would not be dueling today. Or ever. She didn't like dueling as a matter of principle. But she was quite certain that a few of her friends would be partaking in the activity, and as such she would obviously come to watch. Contrary to popular belief, Nina was a good friend. As such, she made her way to the dueling arena. There was some hesitance, knowing that last time she was here there was some sort of Godric Gryffindor impersonator present.
She peered inside as a precaution before making her way in. "Hello, Headmaster," and then moved along. The place looked as if it had been untouched. Thanks to herself and Eiji, of course. Your welcome, Headmaster Trent. Nina would be taking all credit in the form of praise and favoritism.

You know what Hogwarts needed? Modern light fixtures. They would really brighten the place up. Plus, less risk of someone actually setting their hair (or costume tail) or even the castle on fire.
Whitney entered the area with this thought in mind. Which was fitting, considering the 'mood lighting' that was going on. She picked a spot close to front of the gathering since she had signed up to duel and being closer to the front would make it easier to reach the stage. Thinking ahead, this one was.

Cole was happy that Headmaster Trent had let them all sign up for the duelling club. Considering how not so well he had fared against his dummy partner in the last lesson it was abundantly clear that he needed to practice a lot. Practice made perfect but somehow Cole doubted that he'd get prefect at defending himself and casting spells by the end of this lesson. The ash blond youth lion was though ready and eager to attend another DADA lesson. Entering the arena Cole was hugely relieved to see no dummies anywhere in sight. It was a relief. Shooting Headmaster Trent a big smile he greeted "Good afternoon Headmaster!" before he walked over to stand next to Claudine with a whisper. "Hi Claudine, are you excited for the dueling later?"

As of his OWL results, James Eiji Rasting had dropped Defense Against the Dark Arts as one of the subjects he was working towards for NEWTs. This was still very much the case, but in light of what had happened...of nearly being decapitated by 'Godric Gryffindor'...the Slytherin had had a mild change of heart. Though he would point out that it was not so much heart as it was mindful self preservation. So he had shuffled some things around a bit and was now here, and entirely for the dueling focus that the headmaster had placed on the term.
Sauntering into the arena, his chest puffing out a bit recalling what he had accomplished here, he nodded his head towards the headmaster and moved to take a spot beside Nina while he waited for things to get started.

It was something she'd been looking forward to and even though she was only a second year, she figured the BEST way to learn was to just GO for it.

Spotting Catherine, Cece moved over in her direction and gave her a friendly nudge in greeting. "Hi!" Was she looking forward to this lesson, too?

"Good evening, Blaze." Calm, cool and collected as always. Most times, it didn't seem like anything bothered the Slytherin and it was quite the trait to be coveted in this climate where founders were apparently running loose. Malachi watched the Slytherin enter the arena and heard the quiver in her voice. It left him just a tad concerned. "You alright, Bellchant?" He asked, the sincerity and concern both quite evident in his tone. It was duelling. More than half the students had been eager to GET to it. It made it easier to forget the apprehension some held toward it. "It'll be fine." She had his word.

Oh Merlin, a third. Three in a row had to be a sign. A sign of what, he hadn't a clue but the man's concern seemed to be going nowhere anytime soon.
Had so many of his students really remained so apprehensive? Most of the lessons leading up to this one had been in an attempt to get them prepared for the "final showdown" as it were but now the man was wondering how well of a job he'd actually done with that.

This one got a raise of his brow. "It wouldn't hurt to offer acknowledgement when you enter a room and find others there." As much as the words were a suggestion, the tone and the look Malachi gave the girl was enough to convey its true meaning. And the second offender. There was a part of the Headmaster that went on edge when the girl walked into the room. Some protective inner voice that wanted her to leave before she could break anything else but...Malachi suspected she had learned her lesson, even just a little bit. Enough to not destroy school property. Perhaps even enough to acknowledge that Godric Gryffindor walking the castles was a sign something was WRONG and not the saviour sent to usher them into the new era of schooling.
Nothing good ever came when the dead started walking. He returned her nod, cautious but willing to give her a second chance.
With the last of the students now present, it was time to begin. As was the custom--one he hoped most of them had taken the time to learn by now--Malachi flicked his wand and the door slammed shut. It would remain shut and any students on the other side would see him after.
"I hope you're all as excited for this evening's duels as I am." Between the students and the professors, it was sure to be interesting. But we've got our lesson first and a few last minute things to tighten up before we get to that. I want everyone to spread out. Get yourself arms length from your classmates. Enough to support a wide range of movement." So they wouldn't end up smacking each other in the face.
No dummies today. It was, as he'd been saying in all their lessons, the big leagues. No one would shove them for bowing wrong, but he hoped Recard was ready because he suspected many hex marks by the end of it.
"Let's get in some stretches. Loosen your muscles. It'll likely come in handy for a few of you." Afterall, duelling was not standing perfectly still, upright for its duration. It sometimes involved ducking, rapid side steps, whatever it took to get away from that next spell.
"Arms out, begin moving them in a clockwise circular motion for 15 counts. When you're done, counter-clockwise for 15. Get your shoulders moving." He demonstrated for those who...likely hadn't done an exercise on their entire life.
[b]"Then, while bending, right arm left leg, left hand stretched upward. Switch, left arm right leg, right arm stretched up. I want 20 of these. Both arms make one set."
OOC: Had an unexpected Sunday but it's time to get the class going! We're beginning with some warm up, shoulder moves and all that. The lesson has officially started. If you'd still like to join, just jump in! You don't have to announce being late, y'know...unless you want to
I'll hopefully be moving us again in 36 ish hours.

That head of hair… Claudine looked lazily away from the flickering torches (how calming those were to look at) as Cole came towards her. In all honesty, aside from Bernie, Cole was the only other person so far that she had chosen to bond with. But she was being very cautious as usual when it came to any bonding. “Hi, Cole. I sure am. You are too? Or would you prefer to spend your time sketching?’’ Unfortunately, their conversation had to be short as Trent was locking that door.
She wasted no time with following the instructions, stretching out her arms to measure out the distance. Of course this meant she was still standing next to Cole but now as close as before. Claudine followed the first set of instructions as directed and demonstrated.
Fifteen counts clockwise.
Fifteen counts counterclockwise.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
Then came those lefty righty things with the arms and feet. Neither of the exercises they did were difficult but they still left Claudine slightly winded. After all, she wasn’t into exercising that much.

It made it easier to forget the apprehension some held toward it. "It'll be fine." She had his word.
Her definition of fine might have made all the difference in such a promise but as far as he could help it, she wouldn't go home in pieces. Perfectly fine.
Oh.
Oops. Even though she hadn't intended to, she'd been super obvious about her fears, hadn't she? Isla nodded. "I'm fine, Headmaster. Just something I have to work out from within myself," she answered.
And she would.

You don't have to announce being late, y'know...unless you want to
I'll hopefully be moving us again in 36 ish hours.
...and then the door slammed shut, which reminded Isla of the time before when Curtis had been late. She didn't plan on being late to any of her classes, but she would never, ever cross Trent's path by being late to this one.
Duels. Right. They were going to duel. The thought crossed her mind that maybe, just maybe, she'd be partnered with another first year, and that person would be just as inexperienced as she was. She'd even take on a second year. Definitely not an older student, though. She tried not to think about it too much. Instead, she tried to focus on what she had said to Trent. She'd work it out within herself.
Isla got up and spread out from the people around her. She started the stretches, and oddly enough, it really relaxed her and got her nerves settled. She had taken dance lessons for years before she came to Hogwarts, so this kind of thing was right up her alley. She did all the fifteen counts in all the right directions, switching up when she was supposed to. When she was done, she started counting to twenty while doing her leg stretches. It kind of made her miss dancing...

The Headmaster looked like he actually cared, which was heartening to Phoebe, and she offered him a brilliant smile. See? She could be a trooper when required. The Headmaster turned his attention to calisthenics, and the young Gryffindor finally felt like she was back on even ground.
They did these every day back at Starks! If only the actual duel was with fists and feet instead of with wands, she'd probably even be able to hold her own against a sixth or seventh year. Yes, they were bigger and stronger, but had they trained in combat since they were five? Well, some of them probably had. But most hadn't!
Phoebe grinned broadly at Bernie before throwing herself into the exercises. Stretching and rolling her shoulders and... perhaps a little bit of bouncing.

Bernie obediently skedaddled an arm's length away from Phoebe, stretching her arm out nice and long and wiggling her fingers to ascertain that she was far enough away. Like a wave, she waved to her friend. Then she began the little arm circles, making bigger ones as she went as though she were a Muggle aeroplane, preparing for takeoff.
She also bent in half and touched her toes and stretched her legs behind her and grabbed her ankles and all of that stuff. SO. MUCH. S t r e t c h i n g .

”Of course, Headmaster,” Nina gave the man a subtle grin before nearing towards the crowd to find a place to stand. Despite the fact that she did not want to stay back and clean up, she was quite glad that she did, especially because it meant Headmaster Trent would hold her in high regard as a result. The opinions of her other Professors did not matter very much, but Trent’s did.
Nina waited quietly as her classmates trickled in, turning to greet Eiji with a small smile as he made his way over. She was eager to turn her attention back to their Headmaster once it was time to begin, though she was not exciting for this evening’s duel. She was, however, excited for the lesson portion of the evening. Taking a few steps away from Eiji, she spread her arms out as instructed and began moving them in a circular motion. First clockwise, fifteen seconds. She obviously counted in her head. Then, she swapped rotation and began circling counter-clockwise. Again, for fifteen seconds as instructed.
Then arms and legs. Nina did yoga every night, this wasn’t anything difficult.

So they were starting the lesson with exercising. Not exactly the review she had wished for, but Avalon supposed physical readiness was just as important as mental ability when it came to dueling. She wasn't even planning on actually dueling tonight, as she hadn't signed up for dueling club yet. The young Ravenclaw went back and forth about joining. She enjoyed the thrill of dueling, and she was fairly good at it, but she was terrified of facing someone way more experience and looking like a complete fool.
Avalon did some basic circles with her arms, rolled her shoulders, and bent her legs. This was kind of like yoga, right? Nevertheless, she was looking forward to the lesson and to watching her fellow classmates duel. Perhaps she would sign up for dueling club later if tonight went well for her friends. She'd have to wait and see.
Just as hit butt was about to hit the chair, he heard the words of the Professor and stood back up, joining the rest of the students. So much for front row seats to the duels. As he joined everyone else, he flashed Minjae a grin, joining him for the moment “S’up man”. See, he could be nice when he wanted to be.
As the door slammed, Ewan cast a quick glance around to see if there were any faces that turned up late to the lesson, his mind having flashbacks of someone getting thrown out all of those weeks ago. Without noticing anyone missing in particular, he turned his attention to the lesson at hand. Finding a small space for himself, he stretched out his long, gangly arms, laughing a little as he hit one of the first years by accident (Isla)“Oops. Sorry about that”. She hadn’t been in real danger but it was always nice to apologize, just in case.
Stretching his arms in front of him now, his fingers interlocked, he did his best to loosen up his muscles, just as he usually did during his early morning exercise. Soon after, he was rotating each of his arms, first the right, then the left, forwards and backwards to loosen up the joints. Okay, now for the arms and legs. “And that’s 20” he said to no one in particular as the stood up straight, feeling a little bit more wired now that he’d stretched away and tiredness.
Turning his gaze to Claudine he whispered back "I think duelling is fun, and it's good to know too for the future. Sketching i can do of the duelling later." Cole had wanted to say more, but it looked like Headmaster Trent was starting. Oh well, maybe they'd get a chance to speak more later if they got paired up for any duelling. He liked bonding with Claudine even if there we're a few years between them. Shooting the headman a grin he nodded eagerly "Yes Headmaster I'm ready and eager to duel again. I'm certain i've learned a lot since last time." He had definitely learned from his mistakes or at least that was his hope.
They we're going to be stretching, sigh Cole really disliked stretching. It made him think of himself like an enlongated cucumber or worse a yoga mat. Stepping an arms length away from his classmates and Claudine especially he slowly began the circular clockwise motion with his arms for 15 counts trying not let his sighing be heard aloud. He proceeded then with doing the same arm movement for 15 counts, but in counter-clockwise motion.
Cole stopped to watch Claudine do the set thingo with the legs and arms for several moments trying to grasp what he was supposed to do. Realizing that it was actually easy breezy he mimicked her movement with his own body with bending and stretching hands upward in turn and legs downward for 20 counts. At least he'd be loose and limber when they'd got to duelling. When he eventually was done with his stretching doing his best not to picture a long cucumber in his head he waited for what they we're supposed to do next.
