CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES LESSON

The Care of Magical Creatures are was still a renovation in progress. The grass was overgrown and patchy like a checkered quilt knitted by someone who had no business owning a pair of knitting needles. While the creatures had, by this point in time, mostly reaccumulated to their Hogwarts home, Mathys found himself convinced that the very vegetation of the grounds had turned wild in the absence of wizarding kind.

Though such sentiments were wasted on the next hour and a half ahead. There was important lessons to be learned and a very special creature for students to engage with.

A hodgepodge assortment of wooden crates and hale bales lay in a circular formation around a central table where a decorative bronze birdcage sat and dotted within the cage a few small birds with elegant blue speckled feathers that caught the afternoon sun just so. Though something seemed amiss with them. One in particular who was not hopping from branch like the others, but rather had nestled itself to the floor of the cage.

Mathys himself stands beside the cage wearing bold robin’s egg blue robes that helped highlight his frosty, yet some how soft, stare.

Come on in and take a seat on any of the bails of hay or crates. The lesson will begin shortly.

OOC: Salutations and welcome to our first Care of Magical Creatures lesson together this term. Please keep in mind that while this is your (the RPers of SS) first lesson OOC of the term, IC your characters have had numerous lessons with Professor de Nostredame. See the class notice for further details.

Before posting, make sure you are familiar with the rules and regulations for the subject.

Care of Magical Creatures was at least not a class that Kodee hated. It was relatively easy to keep his focus and there was usually a creature he was interested in. For the times he wasn't interested, his attention tended to wane more but with this subject it was about a 50/50 in either direction.

The Gryffindor made his way out to where the lesson was being held, re-tying his tie as he walked which left for a somewhat slower gait than the boy typically employed. He'd been fine to leave it how it was (untied and slung over his shoulder), but the Headmaster had made him promise to fix it with the threat of a detention when he least wanted it. Again and again Kodee worked at the tie, thinking it was off somehow no matter how he did it.

Maybe he was being picky. Maybe he was hyper-fixating. Either way, the tie was yanked from his neck again as he approached. "How's it going, Professor?" His greeting casual as anything before drifting over to the cage with the hopping little birds. The squinted at them, even as his hands went to fixing his tie once more. "Think one of your birds is dying."

He'd have flicked the cage with his fingers to be sure but they were currently occupied.

But then...he paused to look around and it suddenly hit him. "Where is everyone? Was class cancelled? Aw man, I walked all the way." Could no one have TOLD him before he wasted his time?

Bernie was almost disturbed by how early she was to class today... "Bonjour, monsieur," she greeted Professor de Nostredame, then hesitated and added, "Hi Kodee," shyly to the older boy.

It had taken her all year last year, but she had learned the professor's name at last and now looked forward to his classes. She took a quiet seat on one of the hale bales, eyeing the birdcage a bit. Bernie took out her journal for notes and decided to doodle what she saw. ~~It was mostly just a drawing of Kodee Chosen at the moment....~~

Fiona had experienced some issues last term when she took this subject at Beauxbatons. This made her determined to not have a repeat of that this term and that was her mindset with every lesson. "Bonjour Monsieur," she greeted with a smile and small nod of her head.

As she sat down on one of the hay bales, Fiona noticed the birds and she could feel herself getting rather sad, though she was skilled at hiding it. She could tell that something just wasn't right.

Phoebe skipped across the grass, scuffing up patches of dirt and dead grass as she looked for an appropriate seat. She could grab an unclaimed patch of hay and save seats for Teddy and Tavie and Yoyo and everyone. She could do that. Hm.

"Bonjour, Professor. I like your birds. Your grass needs a bit of help, but that's groundskeeping and a totally different career field." She seated herself politely next to Bernie before shifting over and squishing the girl with her hip. "Whatcha drawing? Oh. Looks like an octopus with a fungus. Very nice."

Tom was so looking forwards to this lesson, he was muggle born and seeing what sort of animals the wizarding world had was a dream come true, he noticed that Fiona was already there and he gave her a small smile as he entered the room, he then turned towards the Professor. "Hello Professor, hope that you are well." He smiled.

Isla always got a little excited about having a Care of Magical Creatures lesson. Sure, it was still a class, but at eleven years old, it was still such a treat to spend time with the animals. Well, some of them. The cute, cuddly, and innocent ones were a treat, but she wasn't sure how she would feel if they were asked to deal with something a little more dangerous.

Today's focus didn't look too dangerous, though, aside from the bird at the bottom of the cage. "Hello, Professor," she said, but her gaze hadn't left the bird at the bottom of the cage. "Is it sick?" She had no idea why birds hung out at the bottom of their cages, but she knew it wasn't for good reasons.

After her greeting and quick question, she found a spot amidst the hay bales and crates and waited for class to start. She hadn't missed the comment about one of the birds dying. Was it? She didn't know, but she really hoped the professor hadn't brought in a dying bird today.

There were still several questions in her head about the presence of the former Beauxbatons professor being here at Hogwarts. Carys knew better than to ask most of them though, and at least she hadn’t ever been afraid of him last term. She just hoped he wasn’t some sort of spy or something. Either way, at least COMC wasn’t canceled like Quidditch had been this term, even if the grounds were still a bit overgrown.

“Bonjour, Professor de Nostradame,” she said, giving him a smile as she arrived inside the circle of seating and took a crate for herself, sending a concerned look toward the cage of birds. There seemed like there’d be enough space on the crate if her sister chose to attend too. Or anyone else who wanted a seat, really. She just hoped the birds were okay.

No doubt about it, by this point in term, going to lessons and completing homework felt more like ticking items off of a to do list rather than being anything properly worth engaging with. It was all a way of keeping busy. The content of the classes? Didn't matter. The grades of the homework? Weren't important. Kaiser was just... going through the motions. But that was fine. That was what he needed to do. It was fine.

He was fine.

He arrived at the Care of Magical Creatures lesson looking as frowny and preoccupied as he usually did as of late - more so, even, as things were not necessarily improving. Casting only the briefest glance at the cage and the birds that inhabited it, he drifted over to sit by Kodee. Naturally.

"Afternoon," Kaiser mumbled in the direction of Nostredame, barely audible, but there was at least an attempt at politeness. He was clearly distracted. By a lot of things, yes, and a moment later, by Kodee's fiddling with his school tie as well.

Oh look, Curtis wasn't last to arrive for once. He returned for another lesson in CoMC. Though he wouldn't admit it he didn't require some extra help in being early enough this time. When he arrived, Curtis looked straight at the Professor, he noticed that one of the birds in the cage wasn't quite as active as the others. Should he point this out? Maybe this was part of the lesson, making it seem well again.

He bit his tongue regarding him told recently that he showcased a lack of care with certain creatures. The irony, but Curtis was in a pleasant mood, smiling at the thought, "Bonjour, Professor.... that is an extravagate set of robes, sir. Are those custom-made?" He asked. It was very rich and elegant looking. Maybe his dad would like them. Could garner him enough attention.

Curtis eventually set off to sit at one of the bales.

This place still looked awful and Nina was not impressed in the least. In her ~~humble~~ opinion, there had been plenty of time to take care of the grass and weed the area. There was absolutely no excuse where there was magic. It was absolutely ridiculous that they still had to attend a lesson with this much aesthetic disarray. It was yet another deterrent, as Nina never enjoyed Care of Magical Creatures to begin with. She much preferred learning from their textbook. The class was far .... too practical ~~and entirely useless in the real world~~.

Nevertheless, she did make her way towards her classmates. Stopping to acknowledge Professor Nostredame with a look. She had no intention of going near him for a greeting as he was standing far too close to the caged birds. No thank you. She'd stay as far away from those as possible. Which is why she strategically chose her ... crate to be at the furthest distance possible.

It was now October and Jina was getting used to life at Hogwarts. The castle was much better after a good clean, she liked her classes and her new friends. Care of Magical Creatures was another class she looked forward to. She wondered if they would continue to study adolescent magical creatures in this lesson.

"Good afternoon, sir." She greeted in French as she walked past the professor. It was nice to be able to speak her native language sometimes, though of course the class was taught in English. She took a seat on a wooden crate and observed the birdcage on the table.

At least this was an afternoon class! A gold star for their french professor. Cole preferred afternoon classes, then he was alert and energized. Not tired like on most mornings. It was sad to still see evidence that the COMC area was in bad shape.

Entering the assorted circle of hay bales and crates Cole shot their professor a bright smile "Good afternoon Professor De Nostredame!" Looking around for a seat, he headed over to sit down on the empty crate on Cary's left murmuring quietly. "Hey Carys," he then really took in the birds in the cage with their beautiful speckled feathers whispering to his friend as he pointed slightly. "Do you think that bird on the bottom is nesting?" Or worse sick?

Yet another CoMC lesson.

Claudine had gotten used to them and found that she enjoyed them a lot more than when they were at Beauxbatons. Secretly, she was pleased that de Nostredame had chosen to return with them for he was a very capable professor. Today, Claudine was not amongst the very first to arrive but when she did, her gaze immediately fell on the birds in the cage. It took her a second extra to realise that they were… off. But why?

That piercing gaze moved to de Nostredame. “Good afternoon, Professor.’’ She said nothing about the birds as she was certain classmates before her had pointed out the obvious. Instead, Claudine made her way to a bale of hay to perch on.

Away from everyone, of course.

......Er, well, the castle has seen worse. Inferi, grindylows, deadly mist. Drewett made a little face as his eyes scanned through the area, especially at the obviously unattended grass. It didn't directly bother him, but it simply looked weird. A lot had changed since they evacuated the castle two terms ago. He should have expected it.

The Ravenclaw filed his thoughts away when he finally approached the makeshift seats forming a circle around the table. He eyed the birdcage for a second before looking up at the professor. "Good afternoon, sir," Drewett greeted before seeing Nina and taking a ~~seat~~ crate beside her.

Hi, Nina. Interesting seat of choice, conveniently far away from the professor and the cage. He'd have done the same, to be honest, so he was glad he had a friend to sit with.

Did she know French? After a year spent at Beauxbatons and despite the fact that their Creatures Professor decided to say Au Revoir to Beauxbatons along with them and see what the fuss was about Hogwarts? Absolutely NOT. But fortunately for the Gryffindor, she met someone over the summer who DID speak French.

"Good afternoon and thank you," She greeted of ~~Notre Dame~~ Nostredame. For you know, not scheduling the lesson before nine am. Even if she could barely understand his accent, it was most definitely appreciated not having all early morning lessons. Even if it wasn't like this was the first lesson of the day it was the fact that THIS lesson wasn't the first.

"Jina, hey," she greeted of the girl she'd met over the summer, joining her on the wooden crate and curiously observing the birdcage.

Ewan was still a little surprised at the fact that the Care of Magical Creatures area was still being renovated after the year away. They’d had several lessons now and it still hadn’t been sorted. Sometimes, he really did have to question what went on behind the scenes at this place. The only saving grace for this, in Ewan’s mind at least, was the fact that at least some of the magical creatures may now prefer the conditions.

Walking towards the wooden crates and hale bales, his eyes were instantly drawn towards the decorative bronze birdcage that sat on the table in the centre, a small smile appearing now. “Hello Professor, are we going to be taking care of these birds?” his mind instantly going back to some of the previous lessons from this term on how to take care of infant and adolescent animals. Sure, he was used to looking after muggle animals more than magical creatures but still, he had at least some idea of what to do.

As she stepped closer to the wooden crates, Nora couldn't help but still feel upset and worried about the grounds around them. She definitely hoped the state of this moved on as the term went by and thanks to the help of those working on putting it back to normal again, with the help of mother nature for sure.

Once too close to the site, she saw the bird cages and the creatures inside them. She always liked birds, birds never really liked her, but maybe this would be a good lesson about their behavior, going a little deep.

"Good day, professor. " She greeted Professor De Nostradame with a grin and a light bow of her head then immediately headed to sit next to Carsyn.

These lessons were by far Cecelia's favorite because they were hands-on and often times unpredictable. Creatures tended to be that way. Hogwarts students too, actually. It was a recipe for some interesting classes and who wouldn't want to show up and experience that?

"Hello Professor de Nostredame," The second year greeted cheerfully when she arrived, her gaze shifting from the elegant man to the cage nearby. The birds were so cute, did he know? "Their feathers kind of go with your robes. Did you coordinate on purpose?" That was VERY fashion forward of him.

Spotting Phoebe and Bernie, the second year made her way over and took a seat nearby, offering the two of them a smile and a wave. She chanced a glance at the drawing Phoebe was talking about and nodded her head solemnly in agreement. An octopus with a fungus indeed.

Chloe loved this class so she had tried to get their early, but she had to make a few unexpected stops on the way here. One was to the loo, the other was just seeing some friends and getting lost in what should have been a quick hi, but ending in conversation about other things. Now that she was here she was looking around. This place was just as bad as all the others, but it would get better, she knew it would.

"Hello Professor"

It was nice to see that he had come to Hogwarts, she had liked his last term and her thoughts had gone to the last term until she turned to find a seat. There they were, both of them together. Her feet turned to go to a seat away, but she stopped. How was she ever going to be noticed if she didn't put herself out there?

Headed towards them she put a huge smile on her face. "Hey guys, mind if I sit over here near you?" That sounded stupid, didn't it, she thought. Why did she not have anything cool or hip to say. What would even be cool or hip to say in class?

Was there time to go hide or run?

Charlotte trudged down to where their class would be. Why did they always have to wear their robes to class? Why should she have to be dirty for her next classes or right before dinner? It always made her feel weird. But here she was showing up for classes because she wasn’t going to skip an opportunity to watch the older students interact or cause a scene like this Kodee kid kept doing.

Glancing around, Charlie wasn’t too sure where she should sit. She found a crate, but before sitting greeted their professor. “Hello professor” she didn’t want to ride. Her parents raised her better. Of course. “and nice robes” Charlie definitely noticed. She liked to look stylish and she acknowledged others looking stylish.

As Avalon made her way across the grounds to Care of Magical Creatures, she silently appreciated the weather, which was crisp, but not quite cold yet. Outdoor lessons were just miserable once winter began. She peered curiously at the colorful birds in the cage on the table, particularly at the one that wasn't quite moving. Was it....dead? She sure hoped not.

Taking a seat on a crate next to a first year Gryffindor (Charlie) she recognized from her other lessons, she gave de Nostredame a friendly smile. "Good day, Professor!" Turning to the girl next to her, she stuck out her hand. "I'm not sure that we've officially met yet, but I'm Avalon." She tilted her head to the cage at the front. "Do you have any idea what kind of bird that is?" she asked curiously.

Blake arrived at class ready to take care of some animals. He wasn't great but wasn't all that bad with them. Smiling at the professors Blake looked into the bird cage and noticed one that didn't like as happy as the others. "Is the bird okay Professor?" Blake asked.

This had to be part of the lesson right?

Lucas didn’t know how he felt about these lessons. He liked the subject well enough but......... well. Nostredame was teaching the subject. And while he liked looking at the man’s face - it was a VERY nice face - he couldn’t help but feel worried about how difficult it was to concentrate in these lessons.

Sigh.

Wading through the overgrown grass, uh, took some time and made him look like he was stomping the grass more than anything. But this was immediately forgotten about the moment he approached the class and saw that face. See? Concentrating. It was....... difficult.

"Bonjour, Professor," he said, offering the man a small smile. He wanted to make a comment, maybe say that he liked the robes he was wearing, but a large part of him wanted to hide, instead, so he didn’t. Instead, he moved to take a seat on a random hay bale in a random spot that he wasn’t paying any attention to.

Maybe he could try and concentrate on the birds now. Maybe.

Kaiser heard or sensed her approaching before she spoke, and looked up automatically as Chloe greeted him and Kodee. As always, he met her smile with one of his own - however difficult, however fixed, however strained his smiles were these days, he couldn't bring himself to not return one, especially when it came from someone as nice as Chloe.

"Hi," he said, but his voice wasn't much more audible than it had been when he'd greeted Nostredame, like it was trying desperately to not let him be noticed. Kaiser reluctantly cleared his throat, to force out a little more volume. "I don't mind," he tried again, gesturing vaguely to the crate beside him.
