| | The Giant Chessboard If you are a deep thinker perhaps you'll enjoy the giant chessboard located on the second floor. This is not wizard's chess - the pieces will not attack each other, nor are they large enough to ride upon like a certain other giant chessboard from wizarding history. The pieces are all around four feet tall and they are charmed to move when you touch them, but only in the valid movement patterns for that particular piece. As an added bit of fun, players may opt to take the place of a chess piece and become that piece themselves - there are appropriate hats for each piece in both black and white in a chest by the door. You can even have friends volunteer to be the pieces too if you wish.
Its impossible to cheat with this chessboard so it is quite often used as a method for Beauxbatons students to make decisions or settle any beef they may have with one another. It is of course also used simply for the fun of a good game of chess, by students and professors alike. There are benches dotted with cushions along either side of the room where observers may sit and watch an exciting match unfurl before their eyes. There are also regular-sized, self-playing chess sets here and there around on the benches for those who wish to practice on their own that are charmed to play against you or play out famous moves for you to observe depending on your preference.
If your game on the giant chessboard is running long and you can't complete it, you can save your chessboard's configuration to revisit later simply by recording it in the large book on the pedestal next to the hat chest. When you return, tell the chessboard which page has the configuration you wish to play from and it will set itself up accordingly. The Beauxbatons chess club members meet here on Tuesday evenings after dinner and welcome drop-ins.

| The Kisapaths | Sila!Roti | -2 | TouchableHair | ToiletPaperGuy | QueenOfConfusion If one had to compare Siobhán's way of exploring Beauxbâtons to a character in Muggle pop-culture, it would probably be Jack Skellington during his first visit to Christmas Town. What's this? What's this? Other people might have been thoroughly overwhelmed with all the new things to look at and new people to meet (most of which appeared to be a bit reluctant hesitant to make her acquaintance); not Shivvy, however. This was her T H I N G. This was her moment. This was her forte. She spoke absolutely no French but that did in no way deter her from speaking to all the French students. She was TRYING you know? She'd learned a few words (baguette, bonjour.....Beauxbâtons, yes, that counted too) and she was willing to make it work. Determined, really.
This was going to be one awesome school year!
Having taken a random right at the last fork of corridors, she'd ended up by an oversized chessboard. Did that work? Could you play with it? What were those hats for? She'd never played chess before (not properly, anyway, her dad had tried to teach her but she'd lost interest within approximately four seconds of making the first move). Siobhán picked up the prettiest hat she could find (a black...was it a crown?) and simply put it on her head.
Now what? |

| Sassenach | RAVENPUFF | Sing me a song of a lass that is gone | bookDRAGON | #awkwardturtle<# In exploring the Palace, Abra had found a few things that perked up her curiosity. Not an awful lot was these days. If she had been here, and her parents safe at home, it would have been one of the most exciting things she had ever experienced. But as it was, her parents were missing and she was too sad to be as excited as she perhaps should be.
This door led to a giant chessboard, and someone was already there. Someone from her own house, wearing a hat. "Hi," Abra said, tentatively as she stepped further into the room. "This is pretty cool. Do you play chess?"

Or, you know, one person. "Hi! I think it involves wearing these hats!" Otherwise, why would they be there, right? Siobhán was very clever. Hands-on intelligence. Common sense. All that. "Do you want one?" Not that "no" was an answer she was willing to accept from the other girl. |

"Sure," she said, seeing the girl had a black... crown? on. "That looks cool." But Abra didn't want to go for a crown. There was one that felt so much like home for her that she immediately decided on it. She picked up a white hat. It was a horse! "This is cool. What piece is this?" she asked. Did the girl know all the pieces?

He stared at Bernie, a little confused by the descriptions she was providing for elves. Her descriptions were too specific to believe she was making them up. He even questioned HIS knowledge now. "Uhm. I don't know what 'Hobbits' are, and no. As far as I know, what you described is... something other than elves." See? He didn't even say how stupid they all sounded. "We should get you to meet one of the house-elves. I met one earlier this year, she was so lovely and timid." It was cute.
OKAY. "Yeah, let's go." He closed the book with a loud THUD (see how big it was?) and started sliding off the chair to leave with her. Bernadette wasn't concerned with the books, or putting them back, or the general lack of anything she was supposed to be learning from her time in the library. Her revelation with herbs = HERBology was enough studying for today. She had conducted a whole RESEARCH TRIAL with Ilya's hair, so that counted for Transfiguration observation, and now they were going to go do Defense Against the Dark Arts in the Headmaster's office.
Right?
R i g h t.
The Gryffindor led the way out of the library, her brain still alight with the idea of potentially meeting a HOUSE ELF. She forgave Ilya for not knowing what a hobbit was; he didn't even know what HE was, with his colour-changing hair and eyes and all that. He might not even KNOW if he was part-elf, poor thing. She still wasn't sure about him. "What was the name of the elf you met?" she asked curiously as they arrived to the giant chessboard.
Bernadette had a strict policy of ONLY stepping on the white boxes, because they moved first in chess. She did so now, hopping diagonally and very strategically because the black boxes were LAVA, duhhhhhhh. Did Ilya know this? She looked behind herself to see.
