| | Office of Professor Barlow Tucked away in a forgotten corner of le rez-de-chaussée is where you’ll find Professor Barlow’s office. If you can really call it an office, anyway. There’s a makeshift sign on the door stating that it is, but if you pop inside it’s clear that this ‘office’ is very much a utility cupboard.
At Hogwarts, his office was situated on the sixth-floor and had magnificent views. Here at Beauxbatons, it’s dimly lit, windowless and there’s a very faint, unpleasant smell of which he hasn’t been able to locate the source. The good news is, he’s somehow managed to squeeze in a desk. The bad news is, there isn’t room for chairs so if you want a chat, come on in and pull up an upturned bucket.
Oh, and watch out for the spiders. |

Ilya spent easily half the evening looking for Mr. Barlow's office. Some older student pointed him in this direction and he passed the 'office' five times before finally noting the makeshift sign. This was not even a room, was it? IN a fancy castle like this, why was their professor stuffed in a cupboard? Ilya disapproved. He even hesitated to knock, the thing he needed help with was not all that urgent. He knew his grandmother would send him a howler if he didn't go to see the transfiguration professor at least once about his changing eyes and hair, though.
In his opinion? This was a matter for the healer, but his grandma saw this as 'an emerging normal feature', so she insisted he went to the transfiguration professor.
Ilya knocked on the door. |

| connoisseur of comfort ❅ Crayola's Wibby Mrs Alex Turner ❅ Netflix and meow He had had every intention of marking assignments but the pile of parchment he’d been attempting to work through had long ago been tossed haphazardly to one side of the desk. Instead, and with great difficulty given the lack of space in the cupboard he now called his office, he’d kicked his feet up to read the latest issue of VANISH magazine.
And that’s when he heard a knock on the door. “Uhh, come on in,” Barlow called, quickly setting his feet back on the ground in an attempt to regain some kind of composure and professionalism. Two things he struggled with.
Hopefully this visitor was a small person because there wasn’t much room in here.

Hopefully this visitor was a small person because there wasn’t much room in here. Ilya walked into the room as soon as he heard the invitation. He had no expectations whatsoever of this professor, but the cupboard-turned-office thing was not very welcoming. Was he so nice he accepted this as his office or... there was really no other option the eleven years old could think of.
"Hi professor," he closed the door behind him and just stood there, his back against the door. He was so scared if he moved the stuff would start falling over, like that muggle game. "Sorry to disturb you. Also, sorry to see you've got a small office." He pursed his lips to show his empathy.
But anyway, moving on to business. "I was wondering..." Ilya got nervous already, his hair started to change color from regular blonde to striking white. "... do you know how we know we are metamorphmagus..es?" What was the plural of that word anyway? WAS HE ONE was the question. |

"Ah, other than the cobwebs, it's not so bad," Barlow commented lightly, gesturing for young Ilya Belrose to pull up a bucket. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough room to squish in extra chairs so it'd have to do.
He'd been expecting the Ravenclaw to perhaps question something regarding the recent assignment he'd set -- two sides of parchment on the numerous variables that could affect the transformation of inanimate objects.
He HADN'T been expecting a question regarding metamorphmagi and for the youngsters hair to seemingly change colour right before his very eyes.
Well then. "There are a number of telltale signs..." And he'd just witnessed one of them. Did the boy know what had happened atop his head? "What's brought this on, Belrose? I don't recall setting an extra-credit assignment."

I don't recall setting an extra-credit assignment." Cobwebs? "Ooh, did you find any rare spiders???" He was excited, the tips of his hair turning a different color for a split second then back to silver. He LOVED rare spiders, they were so pretty, as pretty as butterflies!
But, as he said before, back to business. "Extra-credit assi--no, no." Ilya was trying so hard not to laugh. He was flattered he seemed the kind to seek extra credit, that went well with building his reputation among professors during his first year. But no. He did his homework alright, but he was not a fan of the books and taking chunks off his days to do lengthy homework especially ones that required writing. No. "Uhm." He pulled the bucket underneath him closer to the professor's desk, ended up with his knees bumping the hardwood surface and one of the piles of books leeeeeeeeeaned dangerously to the left.
Ilya didn't notice, he was too focus on divulging his secret. "Weird things are happening to me. My hair, eyes and one time my ears change colors. I don't do it on purpose. It started when I got my wand." But obviously everyone else noticed, like right now as his eyes started turning into a darker shade - much darker than his natural blue. But Ilya always acted cool as if he knew what was going on when people expressed excitement, admiration or fear. "I haven't really told anyone before, just my nana. She said she'd take me off school to the hospital, but I wanna stay here so I promised her to tell a professor." And it made sense to come to Barlow. |

Rare spiders? Barlow didn't know what constituted as a rare spider, exactly. But there were big ones, hairy ones, and ones that were very adept at cobweb making. Before he had the chance to voice this however, the Ravenclaw's hair was doing.... that thing again.
He paid no mind to tower of books that was threatening to topple at any given moment and listened as Belrose spoke of all the curious things that had been happening. Ears changing colour!? "The manifestations you speak of definitely sound like metamorphmagus," Barlow started animatedly. He'd met a number of metamorphmagi in his time, but never one so young. "Your nana need not worry, the ability you possess shouldn't be treated as an affliction, it's a delight!"
To be able to change one's appearance without the need for spellwork, remarkable!
