It was a mild October day in France when Piers opened up the doors to the Charms classroom. The sun was out, but it was a little deceiving as it wasn't very warm outside. Thankfully the room had a bit of a warming charm in it so the students would stay warm - but not warm enough that tempted one to take a nap.
Keeping the doors open, Piers made his way to the front of the room and stood in front of his desk. He leaned against the desk, crossed his ankles, stuck his hands in his pockets and waited for the students to arrive.
By the way, you'll notice that there aren't any desks in the classroom today. There are, however, large bullseye targets painted onto the ceiling. So, feel free to just... stand there until class starts.
OOC: Welcome to Charms class! Although this is the first lesson for YOU, please note that it is October in the RP, so this isn't the first lesson for your students. Make sure you read the Charms Classroom Rules!

Blushing deep scarlet, he was thankful nothing had happened and then tried to say the spell. "Ascendare" He said flicking his wand quickly ...... nothing happened ... why had nothing happened????
Claudine stared at her Head of House until he had well moved on from replying to her response. One: he had told her to try using the spell on another human; two: it gave her the impression that she was free to use underage magic. Fortunately, she was wise enough to know that it was foolish to be using magic while she was underage. She was also not foolish to perform the Charm with him around. Detention… who wanted that?
Oh dear MERLIN.
WHY?
Why did they have to be working in groups? It was something that Claudine hated. She repeated the incantation silently as she set aside her belongings. Already students were fitting into groups. She sighed. This was the disadvantage of wanting to spend most of your time alone- you didn’t really make friends. Claudine saw that Blake was alone and went to stand beside him and under his target.
“Hey, Blake. Ready to do this?’’ Point and flick, point and flick. She practised before focusing on the beanbags.

"Professor," Phoebe gave him a deadpan look as she picked up one of the beanbags and dropped it at her feet. And one at the feet of each of her partnerssss. "Don't be silly. I'm obviously interested in the theoretical aspects of this spell. I would never ever cast a spell on a person like that."
But with their permission and plenty of practice... who knew? She pointed her wand at her bean bag before glancing at Cece. "That sounds right. Alarte Ascendare." Her beanbag flipped over and Phoebe was DELIGHTED.

Bernadette also hated working in groups. She liked working with older kids, but she didn't KNOW a lot of older kids, and that was how she found herself with another first year.
Claudine. Sheesh. She probably didn't even KNOW Bernadette's NAME.
And there was a BOY with her. Ugh. Double UGH because he was a Snake. AND another FIRSTIE.
Bernadette refrained from rolling her eyes as she approached them. It was nothing personal; it just... was what it was. "Hi. I'm in your group." It was a statement, not a question, so they had to accept her. She watched Claudine work on a few bean bags... then wondered aloud:
"I think we should try something OTHER than bean bags." Just a thought. Were they game?

Kaiser hadn't known the wand movement for this spell, or really much of anything about it to be completely honest, so he didn't feel bad for not knowing it would be difficult to work on oneself. He shrugged in response, matching Fuller-Thompson's own gesture, and went on leaning against the wall until it was time to move on.
Which didn't take long. When it was time to get started, Kaiser ditched his stuff and finally pushed himself off of the wall. People were grouping up already, and, rather than inflict himself on any of them, he moved under one of the free targets that had nobody underneath it yet. If people wanted to be in his group, they could come to him. Made things a lot easier.
Right then. Beanbags. Kaiser scooped to pick one up out of the box, straightened, and dropped it. He caught it on the top of his foot and stayed like that for a moment, balancing the beanbag while he stood on one leg.
... Oh, right. Yeah. Ascension Charm. He could do that too. Maybe.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Fiona was more of a lone worker so she hesitated and decided to practice the incantation before finding a group to work with. She muttered to herself, "Alarte Ascendare," a few times in order to get the correct pronunciation. When she felt confident enough, Fiona looked around and said loudly, "Does anybody need a partner?"

Dear Merlin.... what was happening... why ... why did it always have to be girls. Were there no other boys at Hogwarts??? Was he the only one????? Blushing red, because that's what 11 year old boys do when girls show up he looked at them both... well the Professor did say they should work in partners.
Then he looked at the Claudine again... had they met before??? She had used his name .. the must have ..... "Oh right ... no wonder it didn't work" He replied ... he was going to play it cool .. he totally remembered her ..... totally.
Replying to his other partner who upon second glace was older than Blake. "Ugh ..that's a no for me." He cringed a bit. "I mean about something other than bean bags ..." Whew .. he didn't want the girl to think he was dismissing her.. they could be partners it's fine.

Dare he say it, but this activity sounded ...... fun. Not that he was letting such sentiments show on his features externally, but Eiji was genuinely looking forward to this. It reminded him a little of some games that he used to play as a kid. Well, as a younger kid.

Taking out her wand, she made her way over to Eiji.
"I promise I will try my best to not drop the beanbag on your head," she said, before tying up hair in a bun.
Smirking a bit when he heard her voice, his own wand idly twirling in his fingers as his head casually swiveled around to meet his favorite set of brown eyes. "Sure you will." There was an almost smile on his face as he moved to collect a few beanbags. "That would be the more difficult target to hit anyway." And a moving target at that, which also implied that he would be unobservant enough to allow for it to fall on his head.
But...anyway. Beanbags. The fifth year knelt down to collect one for himself and Missa...when they were joined by someone else.

Ah. Here was the Gryffindor. Though, at least for now, she didn't seem to be particularly overzealous. Though the Slytherin was skeptical.
"Sure," he shrugged and gave the beanbag he had intended for himself to her instead.
Bending to grab a beanbag for himself, Eiji tossed it idly up and down in his hand as he would a baseball. He preferred to have a better understanding of the weight and composition of whatever object he was about to enchant for whatever reason, so familiarizing himself with the beanbag. It took a couple of tosses before he felt satisfied enough to give the spell a proper go. Seemed simple enough, a flick upwards, and so the fifth year flattened his palm with the beanbag atop it and cleared his throat. "Alarte Ascendare," he spoke, giving his wand a light and mostly unenthusiastic flick. What he expected was for his beanbag to shoot up into the air only about halfway to the target. What actually happened was the beanbag shot like a cannonball away from his palm with a terrible backspin. So much so that the beanbag acted more like a boomerang over this obscenely short distance and struck him right smack between the eyes on its way back before hitting the floor with a pleasantly soft PLOP.

Partnering up? Ok, sure. Nettie always hated this part because there were always so many people she wanted to partner with. She looked over at her preferred partner picks and saw Missa and Eiji grab Carys and form a group - there was technically room for another, but there were also a lot of stragglers. So she decided it was probably best to grab one of them.

Grabbing a bean bag and walking over to him, she flashed him a smile as she approached. "Hi! I'm Nettie. Partner with me?" she asked with a grin.

This DID seem fun - which was why she found herself giving Eiji the most 'OH, /PLEASE/' look she could muster, and was about to poke him with her own wand when a Gryffindor joined them. The brunette stepped aside and gestured the girl to come closer, "of course - the more the merrier," she encouraged.
Before she could suggest them practising the spell without the wand however, Eiji was already performing it.
...
And then getting hit in the face.
A yelp left her before she burst out laughing.
"That was intentional, right? you were aiming for your facet?" she teased, before turning to the girl and suggesting with a grin: "Let's start with saying the spell right first though.
Doing just that, while still smirking a bit at Eiji, she found herself repeating the spell first and making sure she got it right. When she was satisfied, she flicked her wrist and attempted to get the movement right - it was tedious but she was nothing if not thorough. Soon feeling confident enough to attempt it, the fifth year aimed her wand at the beanbag and cleared her throat before casting the spell, "Alarte Ascendare".
.....only her aim was not intended for the bullseye, instead she watched as it shot up and then landed REALLY NEAR EIJI'S FACE.
And she smirked, "definitely need more practise."

With Phoebe's reassurance and the beanbag her friend had placed at her feet, Cecelia was ready to give this spell a REAL go. Pine wand pointed at the blue beanbag, the first year flicked her wrist upwards and said, "Alarte Ascendare!" It DID move it a LITTLE, she'd give herself THAT, only it DIDN'T fly OR go near the target. The disappointment was real.
Casting a glance around the room to see if any OTHER firsties had managed the task, the small blonde tried to picture her OWN bag flying up and getting a bullseye RIGHT in front of EVERYONE. She bet that would be REAL impressive and she really DID want to get it right. Time to try again.
"Alarte Ascendare!" This time BEFORE she'd even said it, she pictured the bag going UP and she REALLY wanted to make it happen. She figured that could only help and it DID! Her bag actually JUMPED, making HER jump, and GIGGLE, and GRIN! "Cool!"

Lucas let out a small sigh. He would much rather work by himself if he could. It was the more comfortable option but Fuller-Thompson specifically said groups. It was with that thought that he started looking around the room, trying to see if anyone actually needed a partner. If worse came to worse, he....... might have to call out for a partner himself.

So…
Her targeted bean bag went about halfway up into the air before falling back towards Claudine. She sighed. Being a first year was tough; coupled with being super short, spellwork was challenging. She caught the beanbag just as Bernadette joined them. This Snakette might just prefer to be alone but she was rarely rude to anyone, unless they were to her. She certainly knew Bernadette’s name; after all, one of the advantages to being quiet and a wallflower was to be observant.
“What do you have in mind?” Claudine asked with interest. Her eyes flicked to Blake. Go figure… he was a ‘good boy’. “Bean bags are okay. But if we've got more interesting targets...,’’ she continued to both of them. Now, her gaze followed Blake’s own as it ascended somewhat. Not bad for him.It was certainly more than she had accomplished.
‘’Alarte Ascendare,’’ went the first year Snakette,in an attempt to get this spell working for her.

"Cece!" Phoebe nearly dropped her wand as her housemate and bestie best made her beanbag leap. That. Was. So. Cool. "You're the most powerful now." She tried not to look at Tavie, since they'd been hoping to be THE MOST POWERFUL witches at Hogwarts and now it turned out that it was gonna be Cece.
Which wasn't the end of the world or anything. If it had to be someone, at least it was Cece. Phoebe could be a minion.
But. Time to try again. Maybe she could get a little height on her beanbag this time? "Alarte Ascendare." The beanbag flopped again, although she was pretty sure it left the ground this time.

Oh gooooood... they weren't holding out for other fifth years to join them. Grinning when the boy handed her the beanbag, what happened had happened so quickly that even Carsyn wasn't sure WHAT exactly was happening???? The beanbag was on the floor? And they said Gryffindors were quick to want to practice something ... yet ...
Oh see, there was that Ravenclaw logic. Practice the spell first. And then .... "Oh the target is your face?" She arched a brow; cause well it only made sense since the boy had the beanbag hit his face and the girl's beanbag seemed to go RATHER CLOSE.
Before they could counter it, Carsyn did what Carsyn did best. That was to cast the spell on the bean bag, "alarte ascendare." Sending the beanbag from her hand into the air ....
.... and naturally to land near the top of Eiji's head.

What?! No support for breaking the rules?! "Come on," Bernadette whinged at the Slytherin boy. "Bean bags are sooooo basic!" And to prove it, she pointed her own wand at a bean bag, casting, "Alarte Ascendare," with perfect ease. Her bean bag wobbled some, but did levitate close to the ceiling before she lowered her wand. See? This was just TOO easy.
At least Claudine supported her idea, or so Bernadette thought. Who knew she would be a sneaky snake? She might have had a few misconceptions about these Slytherins...
"Okay, let's use..." Bernadette's eyes darted around the room and landed on her bag. She dropped her hand inside real quick and whipped out a shiny red apple. "THIS!" Ta-daaaa! She underhanded it to Claudine with a subtle nod, VERY sneaky so the professor wouldn't see. "You go first."

She noticed that sulky Slytherin kid - Kaiser, she believed his name was? - and decided now was as good a time as any to introduce herself. She had a soft spot for sulky Slytherin kids. Hehe.
Grabbing a bean bag and walking over to him, she flashed him a smile as she approached. "Hi! I'm Nettie. Partner with me?" she asked with a grin.
Kaiser was really quite content to balance beanbags on his feet for the rest of the lesson, or - as he had now started doing - do kick-ups with one to entertain himself. Wasn't quite the same as doing it with a ball, but it served its purpose, more or less.
Not its intended purpose, no, but still.
He looked up as someone approached, and saw that one of the Ravenclaw prefects had joined him under his target. Gladin. Nettie Gladin, yes. He shot a smile back at her, so easy and laid back it could have been natural.
"Nettie. Hello," he kicked the beanbag up from his foot and caught it before it had time to fall to the floor. "Kaiser." As in, that was his name. It made sense to him to assume she didn't know that yet. "I will be happy to partner with you."
So he supposed that meant he should actually attempt the task. Kaiser lightly tossed the beanbag onto the floor a few feet away, so that he was less likely to get hit by it if he misjudged the spell or something. "Okay... Alarte Ascendare." As instructed, he pointed his wand at the beanbag and flicked it upwards.
The beanbag did indeed shoot up into the air, much to the surprise of Kaiser, but it only reached roughly the three feet mark before flopping back to the floor again. Well, he'd take it.

Hearing the information about the Alarte Ascendare charm helped the Gryffindor understand why Fuller-Thompson said what he'd said. That using the charm if you were under the object wouldn't work. At all. And he didn't want to think about the effect of trying this spell while he was under the object and the spell failing so he was going to think about something el-
They had to work in groups??
Lucas let out a small sigh. He would much rather work by himself if he could. It was the more comfortable option but Fuller-Thompson specifically said groups. It was with that thought that he started looking around the room, trying to see if anyone actually needed a partner. If worse came to worse, he....... might have to call out for a partner himself.
But it was then that his eyes landed on a first year who was asking for a partner and he moved over to her. "Uh, hey!" Smile. "I'm Lucas. I can be your partner."
More group work. That seemed to be the trend for classes this year. Not that Avalon minded it too much. She liked having friends to collaborate with....most of the time. Making her way over to the targets, she noticed a first year Slytherin and a Gryffindor boy getting ready to practice together. Well, the professor didn't say it had to be groups of two! "Mind if I work with you guys?" she said with a smile before leaning down to grab a beanbag. The young Ravenclaw tossed it on the floor in front of her. "Shall we take turns?" Pointing her wand at the beanbag, she murmured the incantation a few times in practice before her first try. "Alarte Ascendare!" she said firmly. The beanbag quickly shot just a few inches off the ground before plopping back down. Well, at least it moved. Some more practice should help, right?

And to prove it, she pointed her own wand at a bean bag, casting, "Alarte Ascendare," with perfect ease.
Why were these girls ganging up on him. He didn't want to participate in any wrong doing.... nope he wouldn't stand for it .... so maybe he should just go sit down .... would that get him in him trouble too. Should he let the professor know?? ... No he thought ... absolutely not he was no 'rat'. He just would cross his fingers and hope that the professor didn't notice.
"Nice job." He added to Claudine as he bean bag sore up. "If you can get the bean bag to do it shouldn't it work just as well for the apple?" He asked Bernadette. "So no need to try really is there?" Ugh, he sounded like whiny first year even to his own ears. Yuck.... "Alright never mind ... best of luck." He added, grabbing his back so he could cover his head when the apple came flying back down.

Lucas smiled slightly at her response. Fiona. He would have to remember that. as for her question, he...... glanced over at the beanbags nearby. Did he want to go first? If he was completely honest, the answer was no. It was his instant response to anything like this. But maybe Fiona needed to see it happen first. She was the younger one here and he was supposed to be, y'know, the older cool kid.
He opened his mouth to answer her but it was then that he was interrupted by someone else (Avalon). "Oh, yeah, sure. The more, the merrier, right?" Ha...... ha. Not his motto but he couldn't leave the girl to work on her own, either. "I'm Lucas, by the way."
Taking turns didn't sound like a bad idea. The fourth year pushed up his sleeves slightly as he watched the young Ravenclaw get to work and- ........ oh. Yikes. But a few inches was something, right? "Good try! You've nearly got it." She wasn't expecting an analysis from him, was she? His best effort at something like that would probably be 'keep trying, it'll work' which........ well.
So was it his turn? Yeah? Lucas gripped onto his wand tightly and pointed it in the direction of the beanbag. Concentrate, Dakest, come on. Alarte. Ascendare. Alarte Ascendare. "Alarte Ascendare!" he called, flicking his wand upwards. Sure, the beanbag shot up, causing a smile to spread across the boy's face, only for it to fade the minute the beanbag stopped at his height and landed with a FLOP! back on the ground again.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Claudine stared in amazement. How was it that this first year had already almost master the spell? The beanbag she herself had attempted to direct to the target hadn’t gotten as far as she would have liked. Anyway, there was an apple being held out to her. One of her eyebrows arched. “Why do I have to go first when you’re the one who suggested we try something else?” But a coward she was not. A quick look was shot towards her Head of House before she snagged the apple. She shook her head at Blake. “Rat us out and I will turn you into a frog,’’ she muttered quietly to him.
With great subtly, Claudine murmured the incantation. With as much concentration as could be mustered, the girl focused. She was rewarded with the apple shooting towards the target. The fruit seemed to shine on its way up. Was it that well polished? It was quite rewarding to see but you know what was not? When the apple began zoom back down…

But with their permission and plenty of practice... who knew? She pointed her wand at her bean bag before glancing at Cece. "That sounds right. Alarte Ascendare." Her beanbag flipped over and Phoebe was DELIGHTED.
.... He hoped she didn't actually think he was going to believe her.
Piers gave the first year a look and then meandered through the class, steering clear of any flying beanbags, which meant walking mostly around the perimeter of the room. He didn't want any beanbags falling on his head, even though they were completely harmless. He was glad to see people pairing up, especially unusual couplings or students who didn't seem like they'd want to do teamwork.
A few minutes later, when Piers was pleased with the amount of progress they'd made, he made his way back up to the front of the classroom and rose his voice to gather their attention again. "Alright everyone. Wands down, eyes up here." And then he waited for everyone to listen.
"Now that you have a feel for the spell, we're going to continue with the activity, but make it a little more competitive. Each group is going to get a box of darts. You'll take turns and take one dart at a time and work on your aim to try and score well on the target." This was for the competitive ones who had a hard time practicing magic without a challenge. "Remember to take turns and play nicely. I'm not taking responsibility for anyone's injuries." And he was going to leave that at that.
And with another wave of his wand, each group got a box of darts levitated their way.
"Oh, forgot to mention - I'll give an extra point for each bullseye you make." That should motivate them.
OOC: This is the main activity and final portion of the lesson. Have your students continue to practice the spell and aim their darts at the targets on the ceiling. No minimum post requirement. The lesson will close in four days. Have fun!
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona nodded and said, "Yeah, I'll give it a try." She pointed her wand at the nearest beanbag and as she flicked her wand upwards said clearly, "Alarate Ascendare!" The beanbag flew halfway up into the air before landing back down with a fair bit of force. Fiona sighed. At least she managed to get it up in the air.

No need to try?! "Oh Blaaaaaaaaaaaake," Bernadette dragged his name out with a sigh at the end of it. "Where's your sense of adventure?" She shook her head with a knowing smirk, which was aimed for Claudine, who was CLEARLY more Gryffindor than Slytherin in this instance. Bernie heard the thinly veiled threat Claudine murmured to her housemate, and she LIKED IT. Her smile only widened.
She WOULD go first, but Bernie knew Claudine was up to the challenge, see. There she went, zooooooooooming the apple up, up, UP, UP! Oooh, almost to the target! Anddddddddd here it came down again, picking up speed as it dropped toward Blake's head.
"Watch out," she muttered, giving him a playful but forceful shove out of the way of the apple. Hopefully it would hit the ground and SPLATTER! Which would look SO COOL!
Bernie took her eyes off the apple for a second because the professor was talking, and TOTALLY not noticing them, and he was telling them to use DARTS! HUZZAH! She caught the box that was floating toward them and turned back to her group.
"LOOK, Blake, DARTS!" Darts which were sharp and pointy and WAY more dangerous than mere APPLES!

Know what felt SUPER good? Getting praised by your friends. Cecelia's WHOLE face lit up and she sat up a BIT taller, feeling proud. "Bet you'll be most powerful at something else, you know." Phoebe AND Tavie AND Teddy would find their most powerful moments real soon, it just so happened that Cece got to have one FIRST.
Lowering her wand, the first year turned her attention to their professor, who had ALSO been her parents professor at one time. It was KINDA weird, 'cause he wasn't TOO old looking, not like she'd EXPECTED him to look. She wondered if he thought she was as talented as them, or looked like them, or acted similar. Maybe sometime she'd ask. For NOW, she just listened and waited to start on their next challenge.
"This'll be fun! Maybe the darts will be easier 'cause they're meant to fly at a target?" The blonde hoped so.
