Default Transfiguration Lesson 2

With a classroom located safely up on the sixth floor and out of the mist’s reach, there was no need for Transfiguration lessons to be relocated which meant no excuse for confusion or tardiness. The view from the classroom windows was usually a pleasant one, especially this time of year, but a glance out of the window nowadays was enough to leave anyone with an ominous feeling.

Having given the instruction at the end of the previous lesson, he was looking forward to seeing what inanimate items everyone brought along with them to class this afternoon. It could be anything. Something personal or something random found within the castle walls.

Barlow double-checked that all windows were securely closed before moving to open the classroom door for this afternoon's lesson. And yes, he still looked tired and bedraggled but by now everyone was surely used to it.

OOC: Hello and welcome back! As mentioned in the post, Barlow asked your kiddos to bring an item with them to this lesson. It can literally be ANYTHING so let your imaginations run wild. You've got approx. 24 hours to post your greetings before we crack on.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

A benefit (if you could call it that) of being in the Ravenclaw common room was that the Transfiguration classroom was a short distance away so Daisy arrived rather quickly to class. "Good afternoon, Professor Barlow," she greeted with a small and sympathetic smile as she gazed at his face. she totally understood how he felt as she felt exactly the same way.

Daisy had safely tucked inside her bag, a silver bracelet that was decorated with purple butterflies and every now and then, she'd peek inside her bag as she made her way to a desk and sat down. Daisy began to get ready for the lesson which included retrieving the bracelet from her bag and placing it in front of her.

Jackson had to wonder what this activity was going to be for... any item, eh? Because he could just bring his normal stuff and claim it was for the activity... He had taken a minute to decide, but in the end he had brought a copy of the Daily Prophet. He entered the room and gave the best smile he could muster to his professor. "Good afternoon, Professor," he said, before taking a seat not too far from Daisy. "Hi, Daisy," he greeted quietly.

Honestly Cordelia had forgotten that she was supposed to bring an item to class today, but she had several items in her bag so she was just going to wing it with whatever she happened to have with her. "Good afternoon, Professor," she greeted the professor as she entered the room. Finding her seat, Cordelia opened up her bag to look for an item. She reached all the way down into the bottom of her bag and felt around. Her hand grasped the first thing she could find. Cordelia pulled out her arm and saw that the item she had selected for this lesson was... an old lollipop with several used blood glucose test strips stuck to it. Gross. What was that doing in there? Cordelia didn't even want to think of how long the lollipop had been in there. She couldn't even remember putting the lollipop in there in the first place. The young Gryffindor tossed the bloody test strip covered lollipop onto her desk with a look of disgust on her face. Yep, this was her totally pre-planned item that she had definitely remembered to bring to the lesson and it absolutely wasn't just random garbage from the bottom of her bag. Cordelia flashed a smile to the professor as if to say I came to this lesson completely prepared with my item. Everything was just fine over here.

Patrick walked into the classroom a glum look on his face. He didn’t want to be locked up inside anymore. He missed outside. He missed the sunshine. Sighing he plopped down. “Hello Professor” at least he had listened to the instruction and brought an object with him. He had to dig through his trunk to find it but he found one of his baseballs. Something he wouldn’t be upset if he couldn’t untransfigure the object. He glanced around not sure if he was early or on time or even actually awake....maybe this was all a Dream.

While others were experiencing an unusual shift in overall mood, Nina Castillo's demeanor remained quite honestly the same. Perhaps this was because she was typically quite melancholic to being with? Either way, she was unhappy. Living in the Gryffindor quarters was a horrible experience and after Eloise had read her entire diary, there was really nothing going right. Honestly, the only good thing was that Professor Barlow didn't look like a disheveled hermit crab today. Improvement.

She paused briefly upon making it into the classroom to acknowledge him (she may be judgmental but she wasn't without manners), before quickly making her way to sit towards the middle section of the room. Her object had been within her bag, but as she waited for the lesson to begin she set it on top of her desk along with her quills and parchment. Her object of choice was an old jewelry box. Something she didn't mind refurbishing if there would be a need to. And also something she did not mind showing to the class.

Did Lucas remember to bring an item?

Yes. Barely.

It was why he was seen turning around on the middle of the staircase and running all the way back to the third year Gryffindor - and Slytherin - dorm only to retrieve the one item he needed for this lesson. Sure, Barlow said they could bring anything but he was pretty set on what he wanted to bring since the last lesson.

With the item in his bag, Lucas finally hurried into the classroom. He glanced quickly around the room, trying to avoid looking out the window for too long as he went, before focusing on Barlow. "Hello, Professor," he said, giving him a smile. And yes, he still had questions about the hair but today still didn't seem like the right day to do that so.....

....... yeah.

He moved to a spare seat somewhere off to the right hand side of the room and started taking out his things. And the item? A very familiar-looking elephant he was told he could keep. It had long since lost its animation charm but that wasn't a reason to throw it out, right? Even if it didn't want to jump into his jug of water anymore.

After the common room merges and class relocations, Tina was glad - well, as glad as she could be given the circumstances - that transfiguration had remained unchanged and relatively normal. Talk about ironic… who would've guessed that Barlow's class would be one of the least weird in the school? She entered the classroom with her item, a broken beater's bat, slung over her shoulder. It wasn't like she'd ever use it on the quidditch pitch again, and it wasn't doing any good packed away in her trunk. Might as well bring it with her and find a new use for it… hopefully one that wasn't too crazy. She'd had enough craziness for a while!

"Hello, Professor Barlow," she greeted, giving the man a polite nod of acknowledgment. As she did, she noticed his disheveled appearance, like even more so than usual, and she felt a fresh wave of anger at Trent's refusal to evacuate the castle. First Thereos, now Barlow, not to mention countless students… how much more would morale have to deteriorate before something was done?

Tina took an available seat near Daisy, propping her bat neatly against her chair, and tried to distract her thoughts by neatly arranging her textbook, quill, and parchment. *As she looked up, she noticed the bracelet her neighbor had and smiled slightly at the butterfly decorations. What were the odds of that? "I like your bracelet," she said quietly. "Did you make it yourself?" She had half a mind to ask Daisy if she knew anybody from Beauxbatons, specifically House Papillonlisse - whose mascot was a purple butterfly, on the off chance that bracelet held the same significance as her own butterfly jewelry, but that was a conversation for another time. She didn't want to get in trouble for disrupting class, and besides, it was kind of a weird question anyway.

Analiese walked into the classroom with a rather moody expression on her face. Being cooped up inside was very irritating. She waited at the doorway for a few seconds to acknowledge Professor Barlow. "Good afternoon, p-professor." She then proceeded to take a seat at the front of the classroom. She reached into her bag to retrieve the item she had brought with her. It... wasn't there. The youngster realised she must have forgotten to put it in her book bag before the lesson. She decided to wing it and reached into her bag for whatever she could find. She pulled out a cyan-coloured ribbon and placed it on the desk.

Austin walked into the classroom.
"Afternoon professor," he said quietly. He noticed he didn't look in the best of moods either. Nobody did nowadays. Austin shrugged and sat on a chair. Reaching into his bag, he took out a small teddy bear that he decided to bring.

“Afternoon to you too, Daisy.” Barlow greeted back, stepping aside to make way for the first of the students to arrive. He was anticipating a few kids would forget to bring an item along with them, but so far so good he was glad to note as he spotted the Hufflepuff set a bracelet down. At least he hoped it was her item.

The Slytherin Prefect looked down in the dumps and honestly, Barlow couldn’t really say he blamed the boy. “It’s not all bad, Paddy…” Except it kind of really was but optimism, right?

This one looked down in the dumps too, but he was sort of used to it from this particular Slytherin. Was it Slytherins in general? Or just this one? She was a good student and he supposed really, that’s all that mattered but it’d be nice to see her smile once in a while.

When it came to students, he obviously didn’t have favourites. He would never. It would be wrong to have favourites. He was a Professor. He was here to be unbiased and neutral and to make sure these kids all learnt a thing or two that might help them some day.

Except if he absolutely had to pick a favourite young Mr Dakest would definitely be in the running. Shhh.

“Lucas!” He offered the youngster a smile right back. “Nice elephant you’ve got there!”

The look of panic that masked Analiese’s face didn’t go unnoticed and Barlow was juuuuust about to assure the first year that it was okay. He figured there would be kids that would forget items so he had brought along a few random bits and bobs just in case, but alas. She had a ribbon.

“Welcome to class, Austin.” Another sad kid? It was an epidemic!

And as for the teddy bear? Well, Barlow frowned a little. He hadn’t anticipated anyone bringing a stuffed toy and wasn’t entirely sure if that would work but….. they’d cross that bridge later.

Eloise seemed to be in good spirits he was glad to see and Barlow cracked a grin at her cheeky greeting. Some professors may have given her a scolding but he appreciated her wisecracks. “As a matter of fact I did sneak a quick forty winks so better be on your best behaviour today, Miss Fairfield!”

And at least Nina had a friend now. Maybe the other Slytherin girl would cheer up a little.

But ANYWAY.

It was time to get going and after having closed the door (sorry stragglers, no sneaking in), Barlow moved to face the class. “Seems like most of you remembered to bring an item to class with you today,” he started, taking his usual spot and hopping up to sit on the edge of his desk. His legs swung a little. “Transfiguration is a broad subject and there’s a LOT we could do with the items you’ve brought along. Even with an assortment as random as this. Who’s got any examples of what we could do?”

Any takers?

OOC: Thanks guys! Class has officially started so if you wanna play, have your character react as if they’ve been here all along OR have them face the consequences if they roll in late. Another 24 hours or so before we move on!

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy rested her hand on her chin as she thought about the various forms of Transfiguration. She raised her hand and answered. "There is the incantation 'Scribblifors' which is used to transfigure objects into quills."

The frown the professor had didn't go unnoticed. What was wrong with a mundane teddy bear? Austin didn't say anything about that though.
--
As for the question...he raised his hand.
"I suppose...you could make the teddy bear, not alive, but sentient." Austin answered.

Oh no. The professor was almost certainly on to the fact that she hadn’t remembered to bring a proper item for class today. Cordelia glanced at the sticky mess on her desk and then looked back to the professor. ”I can assure you it is for the task, if you think it’s suitable.” If not, she could probably find some slightly less gross junk or a spare quill or something in her bag. ”And my real afternoon snack is much healthier.” That was for after class. Since the kitchens were no longer accessible to students, Cordelia had made an arrangement with the house elves to bring her snacks for the day to her.

His legs swung a little. “Transfiguration is a broad subject and there’s a LOT we could do with the items you’ve brought along. Even with an assortment as random as this. Any takers?
Oh Merlin, he said most of you. Yep, he had definitely figured out that she had forgotten to bring an item. Oh well. Honestly she didn’t care as long as she didn’t get in trouble for it. What were they supposed to do with these items? ”We could, uh, transfigure, uh… I could turn my lollipop into a teaspoon?” She was giving no serious thought to her words whatsoever, but lollipops and spoons were both kind of the same shape so it could theoretically work, right?

Turn that frown upside down? How about no. No, for many reasons. First and foremost, it wasn't Professor Barlow's job to tell her how she ought to present herself to the world. His job was to teach. Second of all, it was hard to smile when there was nothing to smile about. Third of all, she would look absolutely ridiculous. Fourth of all, how could she smile when Eloise Fairfield decided to sit right next to her.

When the redhead took her seat next to Nina's selected spot, the Slytherin's frown grew about tenfold. It wasn't fair. She looked over to the girl who had said her name, quickly rolled her eyes before looking back to the front of the classroom and trying very hard to forget the fact that Eloise was here. It made her uncomfortable and unhappy and very, very irritated. She would never (read: she very frequently) jeopardize her education, but if it got to that point, she'd have to excuse herself for the loo and never come back. It was the best plan at this point.

As far as the question went, Nina very purposefully chose not to give an answer. Though hopefully this wouldn't come to any surprise as she typically chose not to speak up during class.

It would have been amusing for Barlow to literally nap in class. Was good he got a nap in even if he still looked tired. Didn't even want to imagine what Professors do at night after curfew besides sleep. Also glad she took this spot and that it was open because Nina even disappoints...ok she does all the time. But not in this instance.

"You happy you got your diary back"

Eloise whispered to the eye-roller extraordinaire. She was going to annoy her the whole class. It will be fun. But still she had to pay attention to Barlows questions also which she had an answer to.

"Vanishing or Mending would be two examples"

Besides everyone else's examples of changing the items into animals.

Practically bouncing in her seat next to El, Céline was trying her very best not to actually kick the football she'd brought along. For once the ball wasn't muddy, all of the mud had been kicked off in the corridors since they'd been stuck inside. Keeps the elves busy and what. Cheers yeah Elves. She placed her feet on the ball and quietly rolled it around under her feet, reminding herself to pay attention every few seconds. No kickin the ball.

"Aye I reckon making something bigger counts too right? Sir." Let's not make things too extravagant, shall we?

Professor Barlow's remarks got a slight eyebrow raise from Tina. That was a joke, was it? She was going to assume that it was, as she had no reason so far to think otherwise. She shook her head at the question. "Well, I can't exactly use this for quidditch anymore," she replied with a faint hint of a chuckle to indicate that she, too, was joking. "Might as well put it to use here."

She considered the professor's question for a minute. Most of the transfiguration incantations she knew were meant for a specific type of object. What spells did she know that could be applied to pretty much anything without having to change the incantation depending on the object? Her thoughts immediately went to vanishing - the spell Evanesco could be used on any of the wide assortment of objects brought into the classroom - but that Slytherin girl (Eloise) had already mentioned vanishing and it didn't need repeating. There was only one other thing Tina could think of, and she was pretty sure it wasn't what they were doing today. Vanishing just made too much sense! Still, she raised her hand and said, "What about switching spells, Professor? They could be used to swap one person's item with another's…"

Yeah, it sounded stupid, but Tina couldn't think of anything else that hadn't been said. She hoped that wasn't what they were doing today. That sounded like it would involve group work, and she hated group work!

Being the smart person she was, Archer hadn't brought anything truly personal or important to class with her. And judging by everyone else's objects, they'd all had the same idea. Er, most of them had, anyway. "There's Draconifors." Though, she really didn't want a tiny dragon or any at all. Especially one transfigured from a too-small for her now shirt.

Rosie sat more straight when he heard the professor finally started the class. She enjoyed Transfiguration and she can smell (?) that something fun is going to happen. Well, the professor did tell them to bring an item. She eyed her favorite mug whilst the professor asked a question. Hmmmm, there is A LOT you can do when it comes to Transfiguration. Endless possibilities here and there and now, Rosie is just wondering which spell they get to use later.

She raised her short hand and answered "Multicor... fors?" wait. is that correct? Did she say that correctly? She didn't mean for it to sound like a question, it is more of if she said the spell correctly "the one that changes colors and style". That one would be awesome to learn.

Barlow's enthusiasm - and him calling him by his first name - only made Lucas's smile widen. Was the mist gloomy? Yeah. Was he feeling angsty being stuck in the castle for so long? Definitely. But hey, at least Barlow seemed happy to see him.

As for the elephant, he gave the object a quick glance before saying without a second thought, "Thanks! Her name's Dani. Dani the elephant." And he was sticking with that name. "Professor Sissay let me keep her. She used to be animated but..... yeah......" His voice trailed off when he started realising that he was talking too much so he just..... smiled. Awkwardly. Yeah.

But Barlow would like to know, right? Because this was still Transfiguration. Or was it Charms?

Whatever.

When he asked the question, Lucas couldn't help but glance down at the elephant again. What Transfiguration could he add to this elephant? Uhhhh, well, animation was one but someone else had already said that so that left him back to square one. And as more and more people answered, he was becoming more and more stuck. It was a broad subject? Well, yeah, but why couldn't he think of any new-

.......

OH!

"There's Conjuration," he started, his hand up in the air, "You know, just conjuring something out of thin air." It didn't need a lot of explanation, right? "It's meant to be the hardest type of Transfiguration." Pause. "I think."

As for the question...he raised his hand.
"I suppose...you could make the teddy bear, not alive, but sentient." Austin answered.

“Well, ‘sentience’ would imply that we can give the object sensation… the ability to feel things,” he commented thoughtfully. “But no amount of transfiguration can achieve that. Animation on the other hand… certainly! We could have that teddy bear tap dancing in no time.”

He was grateful to learn that Cordelia wasn’t about to start munching on the world’s most disgusting lollipop in the middle of class. Her answer wasn’t a bad one either and Barlow nodded. “Right. When transfiguring one object into another, it’s always more successful if they have similar features to start with. Like a hedgehog into a pin cushion or in this case a lollipop into a spoon. Good one!”

Nope. Well then. As long as she was still paying attention at the very least.

He was oblivious to any whispers because at that particular, very precise moment, Barlow let out an almighty sneeze. So almighty he was sure his bottom lifted off the desk for a split second. A sure sign he needed to get dusting in here, huh?

“WHEW!” With about as much elegance as a mountain troll, he unceremoniously wiped his nose with the sleeve of his robe and nodded at Eloise’s answer. “Reparo would be considered a charm but vanishing, yes! Indeed!”

“That’s the one, you’ve got it,” Barlow encouraged the Ravenclaw who for a moment seemed to have a little difficulty, but she got there in the end! “That particular spell is commonly used on outfits so it wouldn’t work on many of the items that are here right now, but it’s a super handy one!”

A peculiar name for an elephant, he thought. But then again, what were the specifications for a GOOD elephant name? He supposed Dani the elephant was as good as any. Huh.

“Conjuration is definitely considered a type of transfiguration. And it IS considered the hardest type of transfiguration, you’re right about that…” Barlow agreed, legs still swinging. “But we’ve already got our items here so we’ve haven’t got anything to conjure!” O for effort though!

“Good job from everyone. Lots of great ideas but Tina hit the nail on the head! Today we’re going to be covering switching spells! Switching literally does what it says on the tin… it swaps one characteristic of an item with that of another item so that both objects take on the physical traits of one another.” He paused to make sure that everyone understood because he appreciated it could take a moment to get your head around it.

“This is where YOUR items come into it… they’re going to be one of the ingredients in said switcheroo.” Still following? Hopefully. “Before we get to the practical stuff, I want you all to study your items. Get a proper feel for them. What material is it made of? What texture? Are they flexible or firm? Colours…. patterns…? Switching is simple enough but it can be tough if you don’t know your subject matter so go ahead and take some time to get familiar with your objects and write down three defining characteristics. Feel free to discuss it amongst yourselves and help eachother out.”

OOC: This is the mini activity, guys and you’ve got about 72 hours to complete it in however many posts you want. Like Barlow said, kiddos need to study their items and write down three defining characterstics - eg. texture/colour/pattern/size/flexibility. Any questions, hit me up!

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy placed her notebook and quill next to her before grabbing her bracelet in her hands so she could inspect it thoroughly. She felt the weight of the item to determine if it was a solid object. She held it close to her eyes to have a real good look at its finer details such as colours, patterns etc. After a number of minutes, Daisy put her bracelet down and wrote down her notes.

A smile formed on Rosie's face when the professor confirmed she said the spell correctly. She nodded with the information added and had a mental note on it. Still seems fun to learn, Multicorfors that is. It also feels like it will be handy someday. But anyway, moving on, today they will be learning about switching spells. Her fingers started to trace the nooks and crannies around her mug whilst the professor talked about having to get familiar with the objects they brought in class.

Rosie took her notes out and a quill, activity is about to start right? she pulled her mug closer to her face and studies it. Hmmmm.

1. The color of the mug is black on the outside and has a white layer on the inside.
2. There are diagonal patterns (somewhat diamond shaped) surrounding the mug.
3. The mug is firm and quite light.
She looks at her mug again just to make sure if she will be doing any changes to her observations.
