Catching up Tina's coin up the sleeve trick had gone pretty much as she expected. What she hadn't expected was a round of applause from Professor Barlow. She nodded in reply to his advice. That was a fair point about the power of distraction. She'd surely keep that in mind if she ever happened to perform that trick for an audience - which wasn't likely, as Tina wasn't one for theatrics - but for now she was just focused on getting the trick right. Tina stopped what she was doing and refocused on the professor as the lesson moved on. She blinked disbelievingly at the question about magician names. Well, that was a weird question… like, weird even for Professor Barlow! Nonetheless, she tried to come up with a suitable magician name for herself. Something with alliteration would hit the ear right. Maybe something like Tina the Terrific? No, that sounded cliche and boring. Maybe she could do something with her given name. The Fantastic Fantine? Better, but still no. Then she remembered the nickname she earned on the quidditch pitch back at Beauxbatons. In English it translated to "The Dauntless Dantes". She had to admit that would be a pretty cool stage name, but it sounded more like a daredevil than a magician. Tina spent so long overthinking the question that she completely missed her opportunity to answer it. Rats! She inwardly berated herself to taking too long to answer as she jotted down the spells written on the board. Oh, okay, the top hat and rabbit trick. She was wondering how this muggle magic spiel would relate to transfiguration! She doubted she'd ever use either of those spells in real life (except maybe to entertain the young children of Chateau Croyance), but it was nice to know, she supposed. She almost laughed out loud when Barlow said nobody was taking home a pet rabbit. No danger of that happening! Even if they were going to last, she wouldn't want one, not with her cat anyway. Nem would just attack it! Before she even touched her wands, Tina practiced saying the incantation. If there was anything having two former professor father figures had taught her, it was that good pronunciation was the key to any new spell. "Pileus Turritus," she said. "Pileus Turritus, Pileus Turritus…" That spell was a bit of a mouthful, but nothing she couldn't handle. Okay, enough practicing. Time to put the spell in action! Brandishing her wand, Tina visualized a sleek black top hat with a purple band adorned with a butterfly - the symbol she'd adopted as her trademark since coming to Hogwarts. "Pileus Turritus!" The hat in her mind materialized on the desk in front of her, purple butterfly band and all. Tina smiled to herself. She liked that hat almost too much to turn it into a rabbit, but rules were rules. Now for the second spell! "Lapifors," she practiced. This incantation was a lot easier to say than the other one! "Lapifors…" Concentrating as hard as she could, Tina imagined a floppy-eared white rabbit hopping across her desk. "Lapifors!" she said, aiming her wand. Before her eyes, the hat transformed into a hopping rabbit, complete with a purple butterfly collar around its neck. She watched the rabbit hop across the desk, focusing all her attention on it in hopes that would keep it in existence longer. |
The second the kiddos started practicing, Barlow was off on his rounds again. He’d always had a bad case of ants in the pants syndrome and could never really stand still for too long. Sitting down for long sessions of essay marking was the bane of his life. He was happy to note that the majority of the group seemed to be getting on just fine. Mostly, anyway. There were a few hiccups here and there - Józef’s teeny tiny top looked fitting for a rodent and left him highly amused and…. was that a pile of soot? “As far as piles of dust goes, that’s a mighty impressive one, Mr Dakest!” “Nice one, Paddy! And a non-verbal to boot!” The Slytherin seemed a natural. As did Indigo, Archer and Tina who ALL received a round of applause and an over the top “BRAVO!!” Had he known Cassidy was considering gifting him some sweet treats, he would’ve been quick to suggest a bag of pepper imps. A bit of a controversial choice maybe but they were his all time favourite. Instead, he made sure to hang around for her attempts - of which there were plenty - and cheer her on until she finally succeeded. Cue another round of applause. The words of encouragement continued. “Well done, Miss Prichard, looks like you’re well on your way!” And he definitely was going to hold her to her offer. “Avalon, Analiese, Jade… Keep it up you’re doing grand! Concentration and focus are important, especially when conjuring.” Just like Miss Awning had said. Just like every great magician had an assistant, well… seemed he had a professor’s assistant. He wasn’t terribly surprised when Eloise asked if she could give her rabbit a name. “It’s up to you, but remember, conjured creatures aren’t real and won’t stay around for long.” So it was a pointless task really. “Sorry to rain on your parade, Miss Fairfield.” Being the brilliant, observant professor he was, he STILL didn’t notice Nina and her unhappy self. Well, he did… kind of. “It’s horrible when something gets in your eye, isn’t it? I suppose it is a little dusty in here.” Because that’s what all the squinting was about, right? He’d have the house-elves in to do a bit of dusting after class. “You’ve all done really well and some of you would make excellent budding young magicians! I know you probably all want to stay and learn more muggle magic aaaaaall day.” Call him delusional. “But I’ll get into trouble if you’re late for your next class, SO, your homework is to keep practicing.” And then he wouldn’t have to sit down for reading and marking. “And I expect to see you perform this for everyone at the start of next week’s lesson so I’ll know if you haven’t been practicing.” He wasn’t a complete pushover. OOC: Time ran away with me so I'm sorry if the latter part of this lesson seemed a bit rushed but THANK YOU all for playing, ily all <3 <3 I'll leave the thread open for another 24 hours for any responses/finishing up. |
