Transfiguration Lesson 1 - Could it be Magic?? Early mornings definitely weren’t a favourite of his. Especially cold, early mornings. His hair was a wild, unruly tangle and his robes were crumpled and disheveled but the main thing, the IMPORTANT thing, was that Barlow was here. On time. Just about. He hadn’t woken up in time for breakfast but he had woken up in time to at least warm up the Transfiguration classroom with a few well-placed heating charms.OOC: Hello, hello, hello and welcome! I’m sure you all know the drill but remember to follow the rules and remember that although this is the first RP’d class, it won’t be the first class your kiddos have had with Barlow. Come on in and let’s plaaaay! (: Class Progress Question 1 Mini Activity Question 2 |
Cassidy let out a big yawn as she approached the Transfiguration classroom. It was waaaaaaaaayyyyyy to early for young lioness to be up. She hadn't even noticed that her hair was still sticking up slightly in the back. She actually really enjoyed Transfiguration though and wasn't going to let the early hour ruin the class. She paused outside the door and put a big smile on her face before entering the room. "Good morning Professor Barlow!" She chimed in the most sing songy voice she could manage. She quickly grabbed a seat closest to the front as she did in every class. |
Indigo didn't actually mind mornings. He'd already been up for a while by the time he entered the transfiguration classroom. He'd gone for a run, taken a shower, and eaten a small breakfast in Great Hall before making his way to class. When he did he gave the professor a small smile and a "Good morning." It seemed he was a bit early, as there weren't many other students there yet. He glanced briefly at the small girl who was already sitting down but seeing as he didn't know her he did not pay her any further attention. Instead, he moved toward the middle of the room off to the left side. Indigo took a seat and began quietly readying his things before the start of the lesson. |
Eniola wasn't expecting the class room to be warm on this chilly morning, but she was grateful none the less. She tried to scurry in unnoticed with a smile to the professor as she took her seat in the third row. Grateful that the professor didn't seem to be too great with mornings either as she hoped it would give a little bit of lee way for the rest of us. |
"Good morning, Professor Barlow." The words twisted in Analiese's mouth as she nearly spoke in French. She strode into the classroom and took a seat somewhere in the middle of the room. She simply gave a nod to the two students that had arrived before her. The 12-year-old took her textbook and other equipment out and nearly arranged them in front of her. Analiese opened her textbook and began reading. She shivered slightly as a cold breeze came through the ajar window next to her. She quickly shut it. That was better. She yawned quietly as she closed her textbook and waited for class to start. |
Avalon crossed her arms over her chest to conserve some warmth as she entered the Transfiguration classroom. She was pleased to discover that the room was already heated. It was a miserable morning. Freezing cold and way too early to be awake. And by the looks of it, Professor Barlow wasn't too happy to be up at this hour either. "Hello, Professor," she said as she took a seat next to a fellow Ravenclaw, Analiese. "And hi, Analiese!" |
"Thank Merlin for Heating Charms," Daisy thought to herself upon entering the Transfiguration classroom on this very chilly morning. "Good morning, Professor Barlow!" Daisy greeted prior to finding a seat in the middle of the classroom and getting herself ready for the day's lesson. |
He had always rather enjoyed the cold weather. It gave him more energy. But that did not mean he did not appreciate the heating spells that the professors set up before their classes and the moment he entered the classroom, Dorian took off his Ravenclaw scarf because it was getting too hot with that thing on. He looked around, searching for any indication on what today's lesson would be about and was dissapointed when he could find none. Just a normal classroom set up. Theory lesson perhaps? He didn't mind that though. Actually he preferred it. "Good morning, Professor Barlow" he greeted with a polite nod of his head before he turned to find a seat at the front. He draped his scarf on the back of the chair and placed his bag on his lap. He pulled out his textbook, notebook and writing material before placing his bag under his desk and began giving each object a perfect place on the desk. Once that was done he smiled to himself and leaned back in his chair with his arms folded. |
Who hadn't had enough time for breakfast? This Hufflepuff, that's who, thanks to having slept in. But, after rushing around to shower and gather her things, she'd managed to make it to Transfiguration in time, thankfully. "Hello, professor," she greeted, finding her way to a seat in the back. What? In her rush to get to class, she hadn't had time to fix her hair or make-up and a ponytail, lip gloss and mascara wand could only do so much. So yes, it was best to just hide in the back. |
Getting out of bed in winter was absolutely the worst. Although she had somehow managed it, Missa was still feeling particularly cold today, even pulling her sleeves down to her hands wasn't helping. Practicing a warming spell under her breath, the fourteen year made her way into the Transfiguration class, and easily passed the professor a smile. "Morning, professor," she greeted him, before finding herself a seat. |
A yawn spread across Cordelia’s face as she entered the transfiguration classroom. She was completely exhausted, more so than she usually was for morning lessons. Last night had been one of those nights of interrupted sleep and generally feeling awful due to high blood sugar that just wouldn’t go down. ”Uuuuugh,” Cordelia groaned in an attempt to greet the professor as she passed by him. Her hair was sticking up all over the place and she could feel the dark circles beneath her eyes. Blinking as she tried to stay awake, Cordelia took a seat. What class was this? She glanced around the room in search for clues that would jog her memory. Ah yes, transfiguration. The bleary eyed girl fumbled around in her bag for her parchment and quills to take notes. Finding them, she placed her note taking supplies on her desk. In preparation for the lesson she wrote Transfiguration on the top of her paper, although the word came out rather illegible as after the initial “T” her handwriting gradually devolved into meaningless scribbles. Yep, totally ready for this lesson. |
It was early and it was cold but you wouldn't know that from catching a glance at this Gryffindor. Rylee had woken up early as per usual and gotten in her morning run, a quick stop in the barn to check on Cosmos, a stop in the greenhouse to water her plants, breakfast and back to her dorm for a shower and get into her uniform. It was all in a mornings work for the fifth year and there was the ever present smile on her face as she entered the room. "Good morning, Professor," Rylee greeted the man warmly as she took her usual seat towards the middle of the room. Allowing her bag to slip from her shoulder and onto her lap so she could pull out the necessary items that would be needed for the lesson, laying them neatly on her desk. Once that had been done, she laid her bag beneath her chair out of the way. |
Vivienne could not believe it was so cold. Why did Rylee have to do so much stuff in the morning? But all that mattered was that she loved it. Vivienne walked over and sat with her. Kayla took out her wand, textbooks, and parchment. Then she waited for class to start. |
Had Nina Castillo been wearing her contacts, as per usual, she would have had plenty of opinions on Professor Barlow's choice look for the morning. Disheveled. Messy. Unorganized. Three words one did not want to associate with their educators. Clearly their Professor knew nothing about dressing for the part. It was quite sad, to be honest. One would expect more of him. Honestly, had Nina been able to see the detailed crinkles of his robes, she would have instantly (albeit, nonchalantly-- as she still knew to respect authority) scoffed. Fortunately for her Professor (and perhaps for Nina, herself), the young Slytherin could not make out the finite details of the man's crumpled clothes. And along a similar vein, she couldn't exactly make out just how lopsided his hair looked today. It didn't exactly look great without her 100% eyesight, but... did it ever actually look nice when she did have her contacts in? Questionable. As was he. As a person. And as an educator. Though Keenan's words had been reassuring the other day, Nina still REFUSED to wear her glasses in public (she also refused to wear them in the privacy of her dormitory, though this was perhaps even less surprising). And so, with rather blurry vision, the Slytherin managed to make her way into the classroom. She followed the context clues her classmates left her with and quickly identified their Professor without even a bit of trouble. Her eyes weren't THAT bad. Yet. She gave him a polite, yet somewhat unimpressed look, a nod, and nothing more (as always) before making her way towards the rows of desks. Immediately she passed by the first few rows, knowing very well that she was sacrificing her ability to clearly read the board and see any demonstrations. But she would much rather attempt to decipher blurry letters than to look like an over-achiever, Professor's pet. No. She refused. Instead, she found herself a seat in one of the middle rows (being in the back would risk ending up next to lowlifes, that wasn't worth the risk either). Next to Indigo. Which she didn't exactly know until she got close enough. He received a smile eventually though. |
Early mornings were becoming more and more difficult for the thirteen year old. Was it because of the cold? Or because he was growing? Or because he was feeling very lazy recently? He didn't know. All he knew was that he was counting down the days until the holidays, even if it meant he was spending the holidays with large numbers of Yawning, Lucas walked into the room and was immediately hit with a wave of heating charms that caused him to blink several times. This was nice, wasn't it? Could they do the same for the corridors? And the Astronomy tower? And the castle in general? Please? He wouldn't be the one to ask but, you know, someone could. "Hello, Professor," he said, giving him a slightly amused smile as he walked past him and towards a spare seat. He couldn't help but admire the man's hair which, sure, looked messy, but it reminded him of his own. Did it go bigger and bigger in humid weather? Was it normally uncontrollable? Lucas wanted to know. |
Mornings were definitely not a problem. Especially since Stasya always had a lot to do, and the lack of dawn awakenings for runs only helped her get those things done. Visits to the barns, the kitchens, morning patrols…she somehow managed it with a smile. Transfiguration wasn’t any differen6t, and she’d turned into eh classroom with a bright smile. “Good morning Professor Barlow!,” she called out, making her way to an open seat and settling in. Plus, her Gryffindors all got little waves, even as she’d gotten her things situated for the lesson. One never knew what to expect, so it paid to be prepared. |
SPOILER!!: greetings! He left the door open just in case any last stragglers late from breakfast decided to show their faces and join in, but Barlow was ready. Actually…. hold that thought. He quickly downed the remainder of his coffee and went about stretching his neck just a little bit more. First one way, then the other. Okay, now he was ready. “I know it’s early, it’s chilly and we’ve only got a few weeks left till the holidays and half of you are probably wishing you were anywhere but here right now,” he started, setting his flask aside and addressing the class. “But hopefully what we’ve got planned today will be enough to keep you awake.” Him included. He had a feeling he was going to lose the majority of them to daydreams and distractions if he kicked things off with a long, drawn out lecture and that really wasn’t his style anyway so.... After a quick glance around to check that he had their attention, with a dramatic flourish and some expert sleight of hand, Barlow produced from his very own ear a single, shiny galleon. “Do you know what that was?” It was a question he didn’t give any of them a chance to answer. “MAGIC.” Yes, he was impressive. Yes, they could applaud if they wanted. “Before we kick things off properly, what I want to know is, what do you lot know about muggle magic? Do you know any famous or well known tricks?” OOC: Thanks for joining, guys! Class is officially underway so remember any IC lateness will result in IC repercussions. You’ve got about 24 hours for question 1! |
Was Nina alright? Indigo had thought there was something a little off about her, and he was really getting that vibe today. Especially as she seemed to look right past him until she'd already sat down next to him, and only then acknowledged his presence. He did smile back of course and decided not to say anything. For now. Maybe he'd talk to her after class, just to make sure everything was okay. Had those mean dormmates of hers done something? Did he need to retaliate? That was a problem for later, though, because now it was time for Transfiguration. The subject of muggle magic was interesting. Indigo did know a fair bit about that, actually. Well, he didn't know how it happened really, but he knew about it. He'd basically grown up on the streets of Paris, so he'd seen his fair share of street performers, some of them doing muggle magic. He raised his hand. "There's tricks where they put something in something else, like... a coin in a cup, and make the coin disappear." |
Cassidy nodded along about the early and chilly part. She was holding back a yawn at this very moment. It would be far too rude to yawn in class. Especially since she was sitting front and center. It would definitely not go unnoticed and she couldn't have that. No she was going to smile and be happy for her favorite class. Ooooo muggle magic. She was always fascinated by muggle things. She quickly raised her hand. "Sometimes they pull things out of their hats like rabbits or flowers." She didn't know how they did it without actual magic but she knew that they did. She had never seen it done in person. |
He had developed a couple of pet peeves over the sixteen years he had lived like; hearing someone eat or walking behind someone who walks really slow, and apparently, neck cracking was added to the list. Looking appaled at the loud sound of the crack, Dorian opened his mouth to tell him to stop but quickly catched himself and closed it again. Wouldn't be wise to tell a professor what to do right? Instead, he focussed his attention to the window, looking outside at the snowy weather as he waited for class to begin. When it did, the Ravenclaw looked back to the front and raised an eyebrow as the professor pulled a coin from behind his ear and called it magic before they could even answer the question. "Should it really be called magic though? Aren't they just illusions?" he asked after raising his hand. "Illusions to trick the muggle's mind in to believing that that kind of magic is real" Anyway "I know of this old trick where the "magician" " he air quoted with his fingers "has a black stick they call a wand and "magically" make a bouquet of flowers appear" wait....did that mean that the orchideous charm was inspired by a muggle "magic" trick? |
Mmmmm.....she was going to have to disagree with the professor on that one. Full body stretches (you know, the ones where you raise your arms and stretch from there) worked better. But, her still slightly groggy mind didn't fill like getting into that now. "Some magician's, and lucky people in general, can escape from bindings like rope and handcuffs," Archer piped up. Not that she'd ever tried it herself. "One magician by the name of Harry Houdini could even escape from straitjackets.....while underwater. And some say that he even died while doing one of his little tricks." Sort of crazy to put yourself through that just for kicks and a few dollars, but whatever. The underwater straitjacket thing, not dying. Although, that sucked too. "Which, he kind of did if you think about it, because he was trying to prove that he could withstand repeated punches to the stomach, which resulted in his appendix bursting and he didn't get to the hospital in time." Yeah, not a great thing to ignore, people. "Which reminds me, there's an current Auror that's rumored to be able to escape ropes and handcuffs too....." Or was he training to be one...? She couldn't really remember, nor did she know if it was really true. People could and did makeup things all the time, after all. |
Patrick listened to the other students answers as he watched the professor around the room. He was very confused by why they were talking about muggle magic instead of actual magic. Shaking his head and writing down what they were doing that day he thought over what he wanted to say. Raising his hand he had finally gotten to his answer and was ready to say it, "They really like to do the sawing the lady in half." It still gave him hives to watch that happen. He crossed his arms over his chest trying to pull in some warmth since it was a bit chilly. |
We’ve totally been here the whole time :) Kam was sitting at her desk, leaning on her arm as Professor Barlow started to speak, her blue eyes flicked up to him and then she sat up fully as he pulled a galleon out of his ear! O_O Okay, but that was kinda cool, even if it was Muggle Magic? She wasn’t sure exactly what she knew about muffle magic, she knew they pulled rabbits out of hats and sawed people in half, but other people had already mentioned that. She raised her hand and then spoke “I think I’ve seen where they’ve made a whole muggle boat or airplane disappear. ” She thought at least. Or was that wizards? |
Been here all along! Transfiguration was still one of Tina's favorite subjects, though she missed Professor Darlington's predictable, no-nonsense teaching style. Even so, she was here on time and ready to learn, despite the early hour. She'd said good morning to the professor upon her arrival, then proceeded to her usual seat in one of the middle rows, neatly arranging her supplies on her desk. She was relieved to see the perfectly normal classroom setup. Hopefully this would be a nice, straightforward, low-key lesson! She almost chuckled at the professor's opening remarks. Well, that much was true! She did wish she was anywhere but here, preferably back home in France… but that had more to do with her dislike of Hogwarts in general than the upcoming holidays. She did have to admit she was curious about what Barlow had planned, though there was no need to worry about keeping her awake. She'd prepared for the early lesson with a good night's sleep and an extra cup of coffee with breakfast, and besides, sleeping in class wasn't her style. Blink, blink. All Tina could do was stare at Professor Barlow's coin-behind-the-ear trick, unsure what to make of it or the mention of muggle magic. She had no idea where he was going with this! She could only hope that it was going somewhere, not just a random tangent. She considered the question for a minute. An example soon popped into her mind, but she wasn't sure they could call it "magic" since it mostly relied on sleight of hand and deception. Nonetheless, she decided to give it a go and raised her hand. "There's a trick that supposedly involves making a person disappear," Tina said after being called on. "There are a few methods non-mag - I mean muggles, use to do this; one of which involves a volunteer stepping into a large box. On the surface, it looks a bit like a vanishing cabinet, but it functions very differently. There's a hidden door at the back of the box which the volunteer hides behind as the magician says the magic words, creating the illusion of disappearance…." Was she talking too much? Probably. She stared at the floor, embarassed. She was just going to keep quiet now. |
Lucas physically beamed at Barlow's greeting and offered him a two-finger salute of his own. Hello. Hey. He definitely wasn't cool enough to salute - that was all Józef Kowalski - but the professor didn't need to know tha- GASP. Did he just.....? Lucas blinked several times, almost trying to make sure he didn't just imagine the man pulling a coin? from behind his ear? out of NOWHERE? That was impressive. Naturally, he had some questions about all of.... that. He wasn't just doing regular magic without a wand, right? Because that was impossible. ...... Right? Yeah. He had questions. But first, he had a question to answer. He sat back slightly, a small frown forming on his face as he looked around the room. Forms of muggle magic? Did he know any? He'd only ever focused on magic magic so forms of muggle magic wasn't something he knew a lot about. Or something he focused on. Or- Oh! "Uh, Professor? What about the cards trick?" Pause. "You know, the one where someone pulls out a card and puts it back in the desk. Then the, uh, magician tries to pull out the card that they had?" It wasn't as impressive sounding as some of the others but he was sure he'd seen it before. |
