It is a rather bleak day outside, with lots of snow mixed with rain coming down, the sky gray, and the wind blowing harshly across the trees and grass. This was the fourth day of rain - although it was only last night that it became cold enough for snow to join in. Now it was mostly snow, with droplets of water still clinging to the castle.
Luckily, inside Hogwarts is much more hospitable. Alice has taken extra measures to heat up the areas in her charge (especially the classroom and office and waiting areas) with extra torches. Not only is the temperature general warm (at least compared to outside), but the torches give a cozy feeling to the classroom.
Alice was sitting down at one of the desks that you can sit by when you enter the classroom. Not her usual spot, but this was not a usual lesson, either.
"Evening," Alice greets you formally as you walk in. "Sit or stand wherever you like. Practice maintaining good posture while you wait."

Standing up Patrick glances around taking in all of the students. He could only assume the others were as excited about going to something out of the classroom for once. He knew that he was. During the winter he absolutely hated being stuck in the castle and always in classrooms. And it was getting cooler so he knew it was truly difficult to do anything outside.
Moving toward the back of the pack he found himself beside Anna she quickly mentioned something about Nearly Headless Nick before anyone had a chance. She called him a nerd, his eyes rolled at her answer. “And you call me a nerd.” he whispered under his breath to Anna. He glanced over to find his co prefect Vita was also in the back of the pack.
Speaking up when he felt he wasn’t going to get docked points he stated “to my knowledge the bloody baron is the only one who can contain Peeves.” he was 100% certain of that after peeves pelted them with water balloons in muggle studies. He hated that class. He absolutely did not like Peeves and tried to avoid him at all costs

They were going to be talking about GHOSTS? Hmm. Interesting. Nettie was suddenly much more invested in this class. History of Magic was hit or miss for Nettie most of the time, but this could be headed in a good direction. Despite the fact that they had to get up and move somewhere...
She raised her hand. "The Grey Lady assisted Harry Potter during the Battle of Hogwarts and told him about the diadem," she said. The Grey Lady seemed to be a popular topic of conversation here.

They were going to a.....Death Day Party? A curious activity for a class. Avalon followed Professor O'Hara and the group of students into the corridor, pulling her hair into a ponytail as she did so. She wasn't too familiar with the ghosts of Hogwarts other than the ones from her own house, and The Grey Lady seemed to be a popular conversation topic thus far. But she liked learning about them. For some odd reason, history was quite fascinating to her.
Avalon remembered learning more about Moaning Myrtle during one of her first nights in the Ravenclaw common room. Perhaps she could talk about her! "Moaning Myrtle was killed by Salazar Slytherin's basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets," she said. Maybe that was common knowledge, but she felt like it would be a valuable tidbit to add to the conversation.
Um. Wait, they had to leave.. already? They had only just entered, gosh. Lenora sighed dramatically as she stood up, slinging the strap of her bag over a shoulder. She followed the students out of the classroom, kind of wondering what the professor had in mind. Something to do with ghosts.. obviously. And they were asked to name a few facts about the ghosts... uh, well.
“The Fat Friar was supposed to have been a very talented healer.. so I’ve read.” ..and that was her contribution. She really didn’t know all that much but she answered so that was something.

Rylee smiled warmly at Dorian. "It's going by alright. So far the stress isn't a huge factor... it's just a matter of balancing my time between lessons, activities, studying and still having a bit of downtime for myself." Anyone that truly knew her though, would know that this was normally the case anyhow. No matter how hard she tried each term, it seemed that she was always busy even when she cut back on activities.
They would be talking about ghosts today AND attending a Death Day party. This was surely about to be a different twist on the usually history of magic lesson, that much was for sure. Grabbing her bag and slinging it over her shoulder, Rylee rose to her feet following Professor O'Hara out of the classroom and into the corridor. Raising her hand she offered her own bit of knowledge that probably wasn't all to interesting to anyone other than the first years maybe but at least it hadn't already been said. "Dolly Dopple was the charms professor last term. She was eaten by furry pink mutants and continued to teach her lessons until the end of term." A really cheerful old women she was, Rylee had rather liked her. Maybe she would be attending this party?

A Death Day Party? It sounded morbid but Taddy was excited at the same time to see how they were. He had never been to a Death Day Party before after all. So he got up with the others who had sat down and followed with the other students out the classroom to where ever they were to be headed.
Hmm.. Something about a ghost he knew of here? Well, everyone knew about the house ghosts and Taddy felt it redundant to repeat something everyone like knew already so he went a different route. "Sometimes Duncan Ashe appears in the boy's bathroom. He was a very mischievous Slytherin over a hundred years ago who got on well with Peeves." He thought for a moment. Was there anything else? Okay, two things: 1) why had they not been warned that they were going to a party? 2) why were they going to this particular ghost's party? He wasn't exactly an important piece of wizarding history, as far as she knew. Also, it would've been nice to have been warned, so they could dress up if they wanted instead of just showing up in their uniforms. Uniforms weren't exactly what people wore to a party....unless they were waiters. Anyway, they were discussing ghosts, more specifically the ghosts of Hogwarts........which she didn't really know much about. She really hadn't bothered to read much of Hogwarts, A History since she'd transferred, beyond what was assigned of course. Nor was she really one to seek out the castle's ghosts themselves. Not that she was rude to them or anything. Just wasn't one to make a habit of having conversations with ghosts.
"I know that you don't need a ghost sniffer to sniff them out..." And that was all she could offer on the topic.

Cassidy was more than a little excited. A Death day party sounded like fun. I mean, if it was anything like birthday parties were it should be super fun. The little firstie was just bouncing with excitement. Oh and she could so answer this question. It was super easy. She raised her hand nice and high, still bouncing. "I know that most of them are super nice and love talking to us students." Which was true. She held conversations with 3 of them since she'd gotten here...if only she remembered their names. She was so bad with names.
Why wait for class to commence? Vivienne sat up straight. Torches? What torches?
History was an important aspect of defence. Today was a beautiful day.
She entered and sat with Fairfield. O'Hara sat up started to lecture. Role models were the best.
Castillo did look weird. Was he sick? What did she have up her sleeve?
Vivienne stood up. Ghosts! She knew it! Time to jump right in!
Then they were in the corridor. She had no choice but to follow.
She perked up her ears and listened. She stuck to Rousseau. Ghosts were an interesting subject.
She raised her hand and said, "Moaning Myrtle likes to haunt the Girl's Lavatories, miss."

Cordelia found history of magic interesting because she hadn't known about the magical world for the first half of her life so most topics in this class were new to her. So they were going to a Death Day party? That was certainly not something Cordelia had ever experienced. Was she supposed to know who Edgar Cloggs was? What was the spirit room? There were many secrets of Hogwarts the second year lion had yet to learn. "Sir Nicholas was mostly decapitated, but the execution was botched so his head is still partially attached." Cordelia offered more information on the Gryffindor ghost to supplement what Anna had said. Sir Nicholas was, of course, one of the ghosts she was most familiar with. Maybe the Gryffindor ghost and some of the other castle ghosts would be making an appearance at the death day party. Most of the ghosts were pleasant to be around. Moaning Myrtle was quite annoying at times, however. Probably not the sort of ghost who got invited to parties.

… Ghosts?
Nina crinkled her nose, not because of their subject matter, but because of the way they were going to learn. She much preferred sitting in a classroom and taking notes. It’s why History was one of her favorite subjects, but unfortunately there was a field trip involved today. It sounded like an absolutely miserable idea. Surely they would learn far more recording facts than by attending a deathday party. The whole idea was absolutely ludicrous. Unlike the Gryffindor Prefect, Nina Castillo did NOT enjoy practical lessons.
That… and today wasn’t exactly the best timing for a practical lesson in History of Magic. Not when everything was incredibly blurry. Pushing herself off the wall, the Slytherin began walking, noting that a Ravenclaw had joined her in step. Uh… “…Indigo,” she gave him a proper smile after a brief moment of hesitation. It was Indigo, she was sure. Just took a moment to properly make out his features.
Somewhere towards the front of the line a girl spoke about Dolly Dopple. Nina cringed at the mention of pink mutants and being eaten. It still felt too soon, nothing like that would ever happen at Beauxbatons. As for herself? She chose against answering, instead squinting to make sure she didn’t bump into anything. Her head was killing her.

Uh, they were going to a PARTY?!
Sure, a Death Day party in the middle of class but a PARTY?!
Lucas frowned slightly as he started to stand up, stealing a glance at Holly in the process. He was silently glad she was here and also silently hoped she didn't mind if he stuck by her side throughout this...... party. He didn't even care if she wanted to talk about Quidditch all day long. They could do that and he would pretend to understand what she was talking about.
But..... Edgar Cloggs? Who was Edgar Cloggs? Why did the name ring a bell?
Lost in thought, he followed the rest of the class out of the room and towards the...... uh, party. Speaking of, were they supposed to bring a present? What did they get for someone after they died? And who in the name of Merlin was Edgar Cloggs? Why did the name sound so familiar??
Did he have an answer? Not really. Not right now, when he had other things to think about.
Anna actually made a bit of effort not to show her true feelings about History of Magic solely because she liked professor O'Hara. She had chosen to stand near Jackson as they waited for further instructions for the same reason as the boy - so there wasn't any risk of her falling asleep, especially with the heating charms and general cozy atmosphere.
As soon as the older witch said what they'd be studying that day, however, the Gryffindor perked up a little. Practical lessons like that - as in, they were about to go around walking and attend a party or sorts!? - were much better than just sitting down and discussing pointless things of old.
The sixth year was about to take the lead when professor O'Hara asked prefects to bring up the rear. Hm... fine, she could do that. It'd mean she wouldn't have to pretend to be super engaged with the topic just to be polite.
But she did know a thing or two about her House ghost, actually. All those conversations in the Common Room when she was supposed to be doing homework instead were becoming more useful than she'd expected! "Nearly-Headless Nick was decapitated because he didn't get a spell right." She told anyone who was listening. Anna had always thought that was a bit wild because she had seen many, many, maaaannyyy people get spells wrong - and sometimes with pretty bad consequences - but to kill someone over that sounded horribly... unfair to say the least.
Even though this was a large group and she was at the front, Alice was still able to hear everything going on in the back. "Correct, Anna," she said, recognizing the voice of the Gryffindor prefect, who she was happy to hear participate in the discussion. "Our dear Nick tragically lost his life after accidentally causing a woman to grow tusks. He'd been trying to fix her crooked teeth." Yep.
SPOILER!!: Vita
Annnnd they were standing again. Okay. Vita moved towards the back of the group and did as instructed, making sure to shoo any stragglers along.
The bloody baron wears chains in penance for what he did to the grey lady." Vita knew it was a horrible, tragic situation and she didn't care to add much more than that.
The Bloody Baron...perhaps the most tragic of the ghosts. "You're quite right. The chains that the Baron wears, and the blood - both of these signify the terrible tragedy of this poor ghost's crime against Rowena Ravenclaw."
SPOILER!!: Dorian
Not pleased that they were leaving the classroom just when he had finished setting everything on his desk, Dorian let out a small yet frustrated sigh as he placed his stuff back inside of his bag. He didn't feel comfortable having his stuff lying around for anyone to grab, and he was sure that not every student at Hogwarts was as honest as they said they were.
As he pushed his chair backwards to get up, the Ravenclaw slung his bag over his shoulders and pushed the chair back against the desk.
As he followed the professor to the death day party, his first thought was that it sounded pretty boring. First of all, there was no food at such party and whsn there was they couldn't eat any of the food because it would be spoilt. So what was the point? And second, he knew that ghosts did not grow character wise. They were forever stuck in the loop of how they were before they died. Always the same stories, always the same grudge on how they died. It sounded like a real party killer.
Though, Anna's words about her House Ghost did spark his interest a bit. He had known that the ghost had died from a failed decapitation by a blunt axe but he had never bothered to find out the reason he had been decapitated. "That's horrible..." he said as a shiver ran through him at the thought of having your life ended because of not getting a spell right. He had made a lot of spell mistakes before last year...the thought alone! Yikes
"The Grey Lady is intelligent yet very evasive and shy. But she is there for us most of the time when it doesn't require her to open up much. I heard her offering help to one of the fifth years to help with their exams in the common room." he said. There. A positive fact.
The Grey Lady was Alice's favorite, though she was obviously biased. It was nice to hear a positive fact about her from one of the other Ravenclaws."I can attest to the veracity of that statement, Dorian," she said with a small smile that no one would see since she was in front. "The Grey Lady can be a friend to those are respectful to her."
SPOILER!!: Indigo
Indigo had been sitting next to Vita as he waited for the lesson to start, but now that they were moving that might be more complicated. She was supposed to be in the back, since she was a prefect. Indigo was tempted to drift that way as well, but he was worried about getting in trouble. He was still near the back, but decided that if he couldn't be next to Vita he could walk with Nina. He gave his friend a small smile as he fell into step beside her.
What did he know about the school's ghosts? Not much, to be honest. Indigo didn't really pay them much attention, beyond what was polite. He hadn't been there since his first year, either, so it wasn't like he'd been among this school's ghosts his entire school career. If he was asked about ghosts at Beauxbatons that might be an easier question, but she had asked specifically about Hogwarts, so he tried to come up with a fact he knew about that. "The Grey Lady's name is actually Helena Ravenclaw, and her mother was Rowena Ravenclaw, one of the founders of Hogwarts." That was probably pretty common knowledge, but it was really the best Indigo could do.
"Once again correct," said Alice with another small smile to another fact about the Grey Lady. "They had a complex relationship." She would leave it at that for now just in case someone else wanted to mention something about it.
SPOILER!!: Patrick
Standing up Patrick glances around taking in all of the students. He could only assume the others were as excited about going to something out of the classroom for once. He knew that he was. He hated that class. He absolutely did not like Peeves and tried to avoid him at all costs
"Correct, Mr.Dooley, and that is a very practical thing to know when dealing with our pesky Peeves," said the professor, recognizing Patrick's voice even though she wasn't looking at them to see who was speaking. "I wish I knew what it is that makes Peeves respect the Baron. I wish I knew so I could replicate it for myself and all the other staff."
SPOILER!!: Nettie
They were going to be talking about GHOSTS? Hmm. Interesting. Nettie was suddenly much more invested in this class. History of Magic was hit or miss for Nettie most of the time, but this could be headed in a good direction. Despite the fact that they had to get up and move somewhere...
She raised her hand. "The Grey Lady assisted Harry Potter during the Battle of Hogwarts and told him about the diadem," she said. The Grey Lady seemed to be a popular topic of conversation here.
So many nice things were being said about the Grey Lady today. Alice liked that. "You are correct, Ms. Gladin. The Grey Lady gave young Potter key information needed to destroy a Hocrux of Tom Riddle. She is probably one of the few people who can accurately claim to having thwarted a dark lord after dying." Not that the Grey Lady was a known boaster.

Ah, the first non-house ghost mention. Alice hoped they would get to one of these eventually, and Moaning Myrtle was as good a place to start (in fact, better) than any other non-founder. "Yes, she was, in one of the darker days that this school has had - and we've had many. Poor Moaning Myrtle never even made it to her third year of school. She might be here at this party, oh so I've heard."
SPOILER!!: Lenora

“The Fat Friar was supposed to have been a very talented healer.. so I’ve read.” ..and that was her contribution. She really didn’t know all that much but she answered so that was something.
"I've read this too, though I must admit my knowledge of the Fat Friar is less extensive than my knowledge of the other three. But yes, he appears to have been a man in many talents - healing being one of them."
SPOILER!!: Rylee!

A really cheerful old women she was, Rylee had rather liked her. Maybe she would be attending this party?
She came to a screeching halt. If someone was right behind her, that student would have bumped into her. A frown was on her face (which none of the students could see as she was in the front), but she quickly replaced it with a neutral expression as she kept walking. "That is indeed a fact on one of our ghosts, Rylee," she said, for she knew who had spoken even though she wasn't looking at her. "Lucky she got to stay with us as a ghost, right?" Alice forced a smile and increased her stride.
SPOILER!!: Taddy
Maybe someone else knew?
Alice pivoted to look (though she kept walking so as to avoid an incident like what happened a few seconds ago) at who had just volunteered this new information. "Duncan Ashe? You know, Thadius, I think you are the first person to tell me something I don't know about the ghosts here. Tell me more about this Duncan, and why is it that I have never met him?" There were hundreds of ghosts at Hogwarts, so she did not disbelieve him. If this turned out to be true, then young Thadius was in for a point reward.
SPOILER!!: Archer
Okay, two things: 1) why had they not been warned that they were going to a party? 2) why were they going to this particular ghost's party? "I know that you don't need a ghost sniffer to sniff them out..." And that was all she could offer on the topic.
Alice was not sure she understood this answer - though she had an idea. Just to make sure, she asked for clarification. "Are you referring to the temperature drop associated with ghosts - the way your nose freezes up when one passes through you?"
SPOILER!!: Cassidy
Cassidy was more than a little excited. A Death day party sounded like fun. I mean, if it was anything like birthday parties were it should be super fun. SPOILER!!: Vivienne
Alice nodded grimly. 'Yes, unfortunately she does that quite a lot. It can be awkward, but we understand why she's attached to them, considering that's where she died."
SPOILER!!: Cordelia
Cordelia found history of magic interesting because she hadn't known about the magical world for the first half of her life so most topics in this class were new to her. "Yep, which is why he was rejected after applying to join the Headless Hunt. Poor fellow. And all because of an accident with some crooked teeth." Not to say that she didn't emphasize with the woman cursed with tusks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Almost all the students had participated in their twenty minute or so conversation. Now of course there was no way to make sure that everyone participated (they were moving much too fast for that!), but this was a subject that the students seemed happy to discuss, so Alice wasn't going to bother too much about silent students.
There was one moment where they had to stop walking as they waited for one of the moving staircases to become available to them. It was at this point that Alice turned around to face the students and give off some more instructions.
"You all seem to be familiar with at least one of this school's ghosts. I'm proud of you. Now, I want you all to be respectful with the ghosts. Remember that we are guests. Socialize with them. See if any of them will share with you some details about their life. Warning: Some of them won't, and you have to respect that. There will be many who will be happy to talk with you. We'll meet up back in my classroom for a final discussion after the party. Well, here are our stairs. Mind your step, children."
They got on the stairs and were carried down to the lower floors. Very soon they would find themselves at the entrance to the Spirit Room...
ooc: we're going to continue inside the spirit room.
Cassidy smiled wide and nodded. Myrtle. Myrtle. Myrtle. She'd make sure she'd remember that name. She didn't want to make any of her soon to be new ghost friends upset for no reason. "You can count on me professor. I'll make sure Myrtle stays nice and happy. I'll make sure everyone's happy!" Because that was what she liked to do and did best.
For the rest of the walk she bounced along, listening intently to all of the other students prattle on about all the other fun facts about the other awesome Hogwarts ghosts. There were soooooo many. Cassidy was going to have a great time. Now they were here and she let out a little squeal she was so excited...
They we're going to be allowed to attend a death day party? Sweet, fascination and slightly morbid of course but Ellie was super excited. It’d be awesome to see the ghosts in their own environment and not just in the great hall. Getting up from her seat Ellie filed into the line of other peers as they left the classroom after Professor O’Hara, wondering where they we’re going.
They needed to list a fact about the Hogwarts ghosts, but Ellie didn’t want to repeat what anyone else had said so she offered up something else. "Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore leads an organisation called the Headless Hunt that only accepts ghosts with fully decapitated heads that can play sports like head polo. Sir Nicholas have applied for membership more than once but has always been rejected." His head wasn’t decapitated enough which Ellie thought was just rude.
Was Archer surprised that no one seemed to have gotten her little reference? Not really, Ghostbusters was an extremely old movie, after all. Probably should've gone with her first instinct of 'I ain't afraid of no ghost!' instead. Hindsight being 20/20 and all. What she was surprised by, however, was the mention of freezing noses. She'd never had that sensation when around the school's ghosts, the cold yes, but never a freezing nose. "Uh, sure," she replied with a chuckle. Not laughing at the professor, of course.
She still wasn't really into this whole 'communicating with ghosts' thing, but wasn't going to be rude to a bunch of entities that could make her last few months already? in the castle rather unpleasant.
While her response to the professors question got a clear response it wasn't one she had expected. Unable to see the frown on O'Hara's face, the women stopping suddenly and causing students to bump into one another was enough to see that the situation causing the old women's death was still very clear in ones mind. "Yes, it really is. She's very kind and really enjoyed teaching us all."
Having nothing more to say about any of that, Rylee was all to happy to quicken her stride in order to keep up. Conversing with the spirits would be just like speaking with anyone else... sort of. She would happily talk with anyone that wanted to talk with her.
Taking care to watch her step, onto the moving staircase she went with an excited smile.
Wait. Soooo they were getting comfortable in the classroom only to have to get up again? Not that Maeve minded terribly, because one of the things she disliked on history of magic was when they were lectured to for three hours. Like, NO THANK YOU.
Also, most of the facts she knew about ghosts were already mentioned, namely by Anna and Cordelia. But wasn't Edgar Cloggs... he was a poltergeist, wasn't he? Oh wait, no he wasn't. Merlin, she got so confused by knowing her classmate's names, how was she meant to keep track of facts about dead people? No offense.
Anyway, they were on the move, thankfully, which meant she could keep to her thoughts on the school's spirits as they walked ... to a party that would probably NOT have cake. Yes, she knew that much. She also knew it was very creepy down here and made her appreciate the fact that her common room was in the towers.
Cassidy was one of the first few to return back to the classroom after the party. She had actually really enjoyed herself, aside from the cold and Myrtle's constant yelling. But that was why she was called Moaning Myrtle after all. She grabbed a seat waiting for the Professor and the rest of the class to catch up. She wondered what they were going to do now.
Miraloma was still a very new student, and found herself rather uncomfortable as she returned from the party with a group of people, none of which she had ever seen in her life. She didn’t say anything, terrified she might say the wrong thing and be even more humiliated than she she was to start with. It was probably better if they thought she was a snob or something than THAT. How would she ever live down the humiliation?
Rubbing her cold hand's Ellie re-entered the history of magic classroom after the short walk from the spirit room relieved for the warmth. Slipping down in her seat at her desk she looked up at Professor O'Hara wondering if they we're going to be assigned homework or if they still had time left of their lesson. It had been interesting to attend a death day party, but she wished it had been one for Sir Nicholas and not Sir Cloggs.
Had the whole trip been worth it? Had Archer learned anything new? Not at all. Glad she went? Nope. Hoping Professor O'Hara didn't decide to ask such questions as lesson wrap-up? Very much so. She didn't even get what the whole point of this little field trip had been. Was it to learn more about the castle's ghosts? Because that definitely hadn't happened.
Flopping down in her seat, she let out an audible exhale of air.
Patrick had followed his classmates back into the room. It was an odd experience in he least. He had talked with many of the ghosts during his time at Hogwarts. But he had never thought about celebrating the day of their death. Now that he thought about it, he wasn't so sure that Dolly Dopple would want to celebrate hers since she was eaten by a mutant.... but he supposed to each their own.
Wasn't it just great how Professor O'Hara had placed extra torches in the classroom - especially after coming from the freezing cold Death Day party? That was the real reason why she'd lit so many extra torches - it had very little to do with the snowy weather outside.
Alice settled down (settled, but with a straight back) into her chair at the front of the classroom. From there, she watched as all the students filtered in and sat down. The clock on the wall showed that there were less than ten minutes left until the class was officially over. So they were almost done, but not quite!
"Did you notice how we took a little longer coming back to class than going to the spirit room?" Alice asked this when everyone had settled down. "I moved us slower than usual. I didn't want to arrive too quickly due to the warm atmosphere of my classroom after leaving the spirit room. Dramatic changes in body temperature can be unhealthy if not used in proper health settings - such as sauna's and showers. So I wanted to give you all time to adjust." Sometimes, she wished she were a health professor as well a history professor. What a shame Hogwarts didn't have the position.
Back to the topic at hand. "What did you think of the party? Did you learn any interesting facts from our ghostly friends?" These questions were more loose than usual classroom questions. There could be many answers. "Whether or not you enjoyed it, I think you will all agree with me that it would have been a waste to merely study ghosts in your textbooks when we have so many actual ghosts living among us. I am planning to do more hands on lessons in the future. If there is any subject in particular that you would like us to study, then please. I would love to hear your ideas. Drop by my office anytime."
"Well, I think that'll be all. Class dismissed!"
OOC: Woot! You can have your student answering these last few questions and then you're free to leave. Thanks for the awesome turnout!
