Whether you are brand new to Hogwarts or have been here a while, the Entrance Hall is always a breath-taking sight to see. Always memorable are the high ceilings, the colourful portraits on the walls, and the grand marble staircase. Various torches light the large room, keeping it nice and cozy at all times of the year. Arched windows atop the staircase, featuring the four Hogwarts Founders in all of their glory, bring in natural lighting as well.
This room is the gateway to the rest of the castle; however, those parts are temporarily off-limits until Headmaster Trent dismisses the student body from the Start-of-Term Feast for bed. Of course, you are more than welcome to slip out of the Great Hall to use the restroom in the corridor a few doors down or take a short break from the crowded room after the speech has been given. Not much is happening out here besides a team of house-elves taking everyone's luggage to the appropriate dormitories. Don't linger out here too long; you have a feast to enjoy.
Clattering into sight at the top of the staircase, from the direction of the rest of the castle, came Kaiser. He skidded to a halt at the top of the stairs and bent half-double, nursing the double whammy of pain in his torso; a stitch from having run through the passageway to get here, and his already sore ribs.
Having been pretty much focused solely on getting to Hogwarts from the moment he had missed the train, Kaiser was looking much the worse for wear. He had lost weight. He was still in his muggle clothes which, as well as being generally unkempt and grubby from not having been washed all summer, were now covered in soot from floo travel. He himself was clearly in need of a shower - so focused on getting to the feast had he been that he'd not even briefly considered stopping to wash in one of the bathrooms - and he... did not exactly smell fresh. On his back was his bag which carried all of his worldly possessions, including his school things; closer inspection of the contents would prove that Kaiser had not yet bought anything for the coming school year. In short, he was in a bit of a state.
But he was here, he had made it. So relieved was he at the sight of the Entrance Hall - not to mention absolutely exhausted in general - that Kaiser briefly forgot to be cautious, and took the stairs going down two at a time, without even a thought as to how he was going to blend into the crowd in his current state. All his thoughts were now on the feast, and the food... all that food.

Another year at Hogwarts. His first year had....certainly been an initiation and the summer break had proven no less eventful. Even with the downtime he got with his family, there just always seemed to be some bit of Hogwarts business he needed to take care of. Buchanan earlier and now the disappearing Slytherin who he sat out in the entrance hall waiting for. The Headmaster was aware the feast couldn’t officially begin until he got inside and gave his speech but this wasn’t exactly something to be ignored.
Malachi sat at the base of the stairs giving the occasional glance to the inside of the Great Hall. The tables were filling quickly with familiar faces and the first years—for the most part—seemed as eager or nervous as the previous set.
Yes, by all indication this was a normal start of term...which left him no doubt something terrible would happen. That’s how it always started, wasn’t it? This time, he felt just a little more prepared. So long as no one died, it would be a good term.
Ah and there he was. Malachi glanced up as he heard the hammering steps coming down the staircase. The slight twitch of his nose as the boy got closer was the only real break in his otherwise calm expression but internally he had SO MANY QUESTIONS and SO MANY REACTIONS. If only he’d gotten word about him earlier, too.
“Kaiser.” He stood, hands hanging loosely in his pockets. “Glad to have you back with us. Caused a bit of worry, you did.” Or a lot but it was quickly subsiding at the sight of the boy.

Suffice it to say, Kaiser was now so focused on the thought of the food at the feast that he had only offered his surroundings the most cursory of glances, and as such was completely unaware of the presence of the headmaster. Until he spoke, that is, at which point Kaiser gave a great start of surprise, followed by a wince. He stopped dead on the stairs, looking very much the rabbit in the wandlight, and automatically shoved his hands into his pockets.
"Uhhh..." Kaiser replied oh-so-intelligently, blinking at Trent and trying to think quickly, but failing on that score, hunger and exhaustion getting the better of him. Aside from not knowing if finding his own way to school would get him into trouble, he also wasn't terribly convinced that his general appearance (which he was becoming increasingly more self-conscious of now that he was in the company of a much cleaner headmaster and other students traipsing towards the Great Hall) wouldn't raise some awkward questions.
No genius ideas were springing to mind, and Kaiser cursed his lack of foresight; it hadn't for a moment occurred to him that the headmaster would know when someone hadn't made it onto the train, and he'd been so focused on getting himself to the feast he'd not really thought of what he might say to any professor that might have seen him when he got there. In the end he decided that it was best to just give... as little information as possible. "Sorry..." For the worry, you know. "I... missed the train."
By the way, it was very disorienting to suddenly be here, when not an hour ago he'd been back in London, operating under the assumption that it was still 30th August.

”So I’ve heard.” And so he could see as well. The boy looked worst for wear and the surprise was all too evident as it dawned on him that he was sitting there. “There’ll be plenty of time to get into the details of that, but I reckon we’ve got more pressing matters to start.” Malachi looked him over. “Like a shower.” The feast was going nowhere. He could take a moment to collect himself.
“Where are your things? We can have an elf take them down to the Slytherin common room for you.” Most of the luggage had already been sorted but he was prepared in this respect. Kid was the first thing to go wrong on the first official day back. It was almost an honour.
“And you.” Equally as important as the shower. “Injuries? Issues? Parasites you’ve unwittingly tracked into the castle from wherever you’re coming from?” Those pink, fluffy things had been ENOUGH. The man just wanted to be sure. Who could blame him.
Even as he spoke he continued to look the boy over. Was He okay?

Well... that was something. There was no need to try and muster up explanations right here and right now. That was good. Even if Kaiser couldn't think up any feasible explanation other than the truth, that meant that perhaps telling said truth could wait until there wasn't such a potential audience. In any case, Trent was not wrong: Kaiser was keenly aware of his desperate need for a shower. Sure, what he wanted more than anything was to get to the food, but if he recalled correctly, there was usually a lengthy wait before it appeared, long enough to get cleaned up, he supposed. So, he nodded.
"Right here," Kaiser replied, shrugging his bag off his shoulders - another wince - and holding it by one of the straps. Everything was in there - magic was incredible - and he felt... very strange about the idea that he was about to be parted from it. Kaiser hadn't let his bag out of his sight all summer, but he knew this was an adjustment he was going to have to accept sooner or later, now that he was back at school.
As for all the rest, Kaiser faltered. Partly because maybe he did have the one injury, but also because it was taking him a little longer than usual to translate everything in his head, and even then he didn't quite manage to grasp it all. "My... here," he said, after a pause, gesturing to his ribs on his left side, but offering no further explanation. "Nothing else." No issues. No parasites. No pink fluffy things in tow. Just a tired sixteen year old, who was relieved to have made it back to the castle in one piece. "I can still go to the feast, sir, yes?" he quickly added, just to make extra sure he wasn't about to miss it.

The day had already been overwhelming to say the least. Having to walk through a literal wall was not her preferred method of arriving at a train and the company in her compartment was... interesting. The carriage ride over to the castle had also been rather strange and at this point, Nina Castillo was ready to clamber up to the dormitory and lay down on her bed. Though going to the dormitory would mean having to face her dorm-mates again after an entire summer and that was a situation she'd rather avoid. Which is also why she hadn't rushed into the Great Hall quite yet.
The Slytherin lingered in the doorway of the entrance hall, peering inside where the four house tables were arranged before the dais. Great. Eloise was already there and sitting next to one of her only friends in her house. This was less than ideal.
Maybe lingering wouldn't be such a bad idea? She could linger all night.
Or until the sorting when the buzzing crowd would hopefully hide her from Eloise and the rest of the fourth year girls. Yup. Entrance hall was a GREAT idea. Nina Castillo would stand right here. All night if she had to. Returning to Hogwarts had destroyed her appetite anyway.

Drewett had already eaten in the train. From his years of experience with the lengthy sorting and the long speech, he learned his lesson to not wait entirely for the feast to happen. But the thing is, despite eating most of the food he had brought home from the Stemp House and bought from the food trolley, he was still rather hungry. Perhaps that was a teenage boy thing, he learned. It wasn't the worst type of teenage boy thing though. He definitely knew that there were far more worse than eating more than one's weight. However, he was able to control himself to leave half his grilled cheese sandwich for Kenzie. Their annual welcoming feast tradition. It was a symbol of their friendship.
After he had settled his things, made sure his owl had treats for the rest of the evening, and made a quick detour to the nearest boys' bathroom, Drewett made his way back to the Great Hall. He was looking forward to good food, fresh drinks, and the general ambience that the hall had especially on this night. He couldn't wait to sit by Hudson or Keenan or Evan or Nettie or Missa or really any person he was friends with. The start of term feast was always different from every other feasts they had after, save for the end of term one. He was no fan of crowds, but he'd make a exception for this night.
Before he could look around and scan the hall for any sights of his friends, Drewett saw a familiar figure from afar as he was walking down the hall and smiled a little bit to himself. He had not seen Nina Castillo at the Hogwarts Express nor the platform, but that was alright. She was here now, at the entrance hall. Hands in his pockets, the Ravenclaw walked towards his Slytherin friend and paused beside her. "Waiting for someone?" He asked. If anything, he knew better than to expect Nina Castillo at the Slytherin table seated with her dorm mates.

Beezley might have been so excited to see the students she couldn't wait for the feast to start, so she was in the entrance watching them all come in. Her elf heart beating faster and faster with excitement. That was until she heard the Headmaster say about an elf.
"Beezley is here, Beezley will help students with their things. Master Kaiser Beezley will take your bag and be very careful with your things." Her bright pink ears hung down as her big eyes looked up at the two masters hoping she could help. "Master Kaiser needs food and Beezley will make sure he gets all the goodies too."

Numbers were slowly increasing over at the Slytherin table, which also meant the options for seats were diminishing. Sitting next to Eiji was not an option, seeing as he chose a place near Eloise... And while she liked Ethan enough, talking to him was like communicating with a plank of wood. She wasn't really in the mood to feign interest any more. Her threshold had been met while aboard the train. She did, however, scan the table for Calloway. But unfortunately, he was no where to be seen. Perhaps she hadn't spotted him within the crowd, or maybe he was just running late.
Either way she-- !!!
... Jumped a little at the sound of Drewett's voice. She hadn't expected that someone would come up behind her. The aim was to hide away from the corner, but she had been found. By Drewett Slinkhard, no less. Um. Nina quickly straightened her back, putting on a pleasant face and composing herself once again. She is a lady. "Not particularly," though if she were to be waiting for someone, it would most probably be him.
"Did you just arrive? I figured you'd be the first at the table," not only because he was punctual and respectful of time, but also because she was sure that he was eager to be back at Hogwarts. Something they did not have in common. Being back made Nina rather uneasy to say the least.

Malachi took the bag from the boy, naturally assuming it to be magically extended if it contained all the things he would be needing for school. The wincing didn't get by him either and he'd have asked if the boy wasn't already somewhat explaining.
"Ah, Beezley, just in time." He offered the bag to the elf for it to be taken to the Slytherin Common Room. No food in the common rooms, no, he was still scarred from the previous term and while he was sure the students would be eating in there anyway, he didn't want to think about it.
The Headmaster looked to the now Fifth Year, more specifically to where he'd just gestured.
"Let's have a look see, make sure it's nothing in need of immediate attention." Merlin knew where the boy had spent his summer or what happened while he was wherever. Beryl was on standby to deal if it came to that.
If it was fine, he could go grab that shower.

.................
Well, this was...awkward. Drewett blinked and twitched in place at Nina's reaction. Apparently, in a span of 24 hours, the Ravenclaw had already made a total of two people jump without meaning to. He had startled them. While two wasn't that big of a number, it made him question his approach towards people. "I-I'm sorry, Nina," he apologized, his ears prickling a little and turning into a tinge of pink. He didn't mean to. He really didn't.
He was, though, a bit confused with her response. Not particularly waiting for someone? Drewett managed a tiny crooked smile. "I hope you weren't p-planning to sit out on the entire feast." The food was always great on the first night, not that it wasn't ever good on the meals that followed. It was just different, at least for him.
"Oh...not really," he said. "Had t-to leave some treats for my owl and use the loo." But she was right about him being rather excited to be back. Drewett had been looking forward to seeing his friends. He just wasn't too excited to face whatever this term had in store for him, considering he had OWLs soon and also Hogwarts in general. Hopefully no more mutants. He didn't want to lose more clothes or professors at all.

He stuck his hands back into his pockets as the bag was handed over to the elf, who received a nod of acknowledgement from Kaiser. "Thank you, Beezley."
It was a relief to hear that he would in fact be joining the feast, and perhaps that showed on his face. Now he just wanted to get showered and get back, as quickly as possible.
What? Oh, yes... ribs. Kaiser nodded, and lifted his shirt to show where they were still quite bruised. "It is nothing urgent," he supplied. The injury was a few days old now, he had been coping with it until that moment, and didn't doubt he could continue coping with it a little longer. "I can get it healed later." The sooner he could get cleaned up and fed, the better, in his opinion.

Nina didn't think it was awkward so much as it was a mild fright. But the look on Drewett's face and his sudden, strange disposition gave way to the fact that he was feeling awkward about the ordeal. Nina couldn't help but roll her eyes in that amused, Castillo way. "Drewett! You're turning pink!" An easy laugh escaped her, already she was feeling much better about being at Hogwarts.
Um. "I wasn't going to skip," though it had, admittedly, been a thought that crossed her mind. "I'm just not sure where to sit." Seeing as the choices were now rather limited. And... There were several people she would rather avoid talking to for as long as possible. Until she had to, that is. Eventually she'd bump into Eloise and Karlin, and that's something she wouldn't be able to wiggle her way out of. But for now, she could strategize. Or at least try to.
She watched him almost studiously, an amused grin gracing her features. "Pietro," she remembered his owl, for the record. But... She didn't exactly want to visit it again, if that was alright? Once was enough and even that was way more than enough. Nina Castillo did not like animals. Even for boys. Whilst she was typically a good pretender, apparently some fears were harder to hide than others. Whoops. "How is he... doing?... Is Pietro still... with Hudson's...?" Um.
And why did she suddenly care to ask about an owl's dating life?

The bloody nose had gotten worse. It didn’t help that his stomach was aching either, as he hadn’t eaten since breakfast and was starving. How calamitous was it that he wasn’t even going to enjoy the feast that his father had told him so much about? More than ever, Sammy wished he was back at his old school with his old friends. At least there, someone might have cared that he was bleeding. Here? Nobody seemed to care.
He paused outside of the doors to the Great Hall wondering which way he should go. He had no clue which way was the hospital wing. He didn’t even know which way to his dormitory. In fact, he didn’t know anything. He sniffled, then coughed, then gagged a little. Thankfully he wasn’t one of those people who fainted at the sight of blood, because, well he probably would have been lying on the floor in the Great Hall by now.

Well? Well???? Yes, in fact, he was very much aware that he was turning pink. Drewett could practically feel his ears and cheeks heating up, and while it wasn't a foreign feeling because he was Drewett Slinkhard, pointing out the obvious just made him even more sheepish. "Yeah? Well... I...." The Ravenclaw tried to think of something in response to being caught. This was like a deer in the headlights moment he wasn't asking for. Happens all the time to the likes of him. Instead, he just chuckled awkwardly and nervously.
This wasn't how he expected to start this term with. Not gonna lie. Anyway, he was going to casually ignore everything about the pinkness of his face right now.
Not sure where to sit? That could easily be solved, right? Sort of? "You could come sit with me," Drewett offered, but pretty sure Nina knew she was always welcome to be at the Ravenclaw table whenever she needed it. He was also actually on his way to look for Hudson and sit too. Hud wouldn't mind Nina joining them, Drewett knew. The three of them were friends. The Ravenclaw himself scanned the Slytherin table briefly too and saw Eloise in attendance, as well as Nina's other dorm mates. So, that must be why. He still felt bad for Nina. It was a new term and she still wasn't in luck with getting into her dorm mates' good side.
It always made Drewett rather happy when people remember tiny details about himself. So when Nina mentioned Pietro's name, he couldn't resist a smile as he nodded. "Mhm." She also didn't have to tell him that she never wanted to meet his owl again. Drewett deduced from Nina and Pietro's first meeting, anyway. While it had been amusing, he could tell Nina didn't enjoy quite that much. No worries. There will no longer be Nina-and-owl interactions this term, if Drewett could help it. "Still sassy...and yeah, b-barn owls mate for life." That's what Hud said, and Hud was basically an owl whisperer.
He'd leave it to Nina to think about how barn owl 'marriages' worked.

"Well you, what?" Yes, yes she was in her element. Thank you very much. Nina Castillo didn't find enjoyment at making boys wriggle around in place. (Read: She very much found enjoyment in making boys wriggle around in place.) When Drewett wriggled it was not only incredibly amusing, but it was highly endearing. She looked at him rather fondly as he stood in thought. She was also curious to see what words he would come up with to finish his sentence. She wouldn't let him off that easily. Besides, he had frightened her. Improvisation and a little pre-dinner entertainment was the least he owed her.
But to be fair, this wasn't how she expected the term to start either. In fact, she had decided that she'd sit at the Slytherin table for once, ignore Eloise and move on with her life. Unfortunately, this was all much easier said than done. Because the moment she caught sight of one of the dorm mates from hell, she realized that the vulnerable part of herself that they had poked and prodded, was very much still present. Definitely not how she imagined it.
Her eyes lit up at his offer. Despite the fact that she was well aware of her open invitation, it was always nice to hear it out loud. Just to make sure she was wanted. It was important, okay? "And Hudson too?" She already knew the answer, but again, checking. Her boys. She wanted to sit with both of them. As far away from the Slytherin table as possible, please?
Let it be known that Nina chose only to remember tiny details about those she cared about. If it wasn't already obvious, Drewett was one of those people. One that she cared about deeply.... even though she and Pietro were no where near being friends. She did try for Drewett, but. Some sacrifices were more difficult to make than others. "Really?" Again, why did she care enough to be surprised in the first place? "That's... admirable."
...
Was it? Was it, really?
