November was upon Hogwarts like a great crashing wave of the ocean, the weather going from mild and dry to overcast and soggy. Heavy clouds seemed to hang right over the castle, although they held back their showers for now. Perhaps they wanted Cornish to get through his lesson, although he would hold it regardless of the weather.
They were all getting wet anyway.
The professor waited on the lake shore, dressed in flip-flops and a ratty cardigan worn over a t-shirt and board shorts. He'd built up a fire pit back from the shore, a dry place for the students to warm up while they worked. There was other bric-a-brac laying in tidy piles on the beach, nets and fish tanks and a trunk overflowing with brightly colored fabric, but noticeably nowhere to sit. These kids sat too much already.

The brief response to her greeting hardly dimmed Stasya’s interest in the subject, even if the professor was proving to be, if anything, a bit hard to decipher on a good day. He certainly seemed rather gruff most of the time, which she felt conflicted with his appearance just the smallest bit since he rather appeared to look like a lot of the people she’d encountered on her summer trip to see Derf when she met her tortoise friend. Not someone who looked like they were disgruntled by the smallest thing. Besides, the little hand clap was hardly necessary in her case, as she always paid attention in COMC.
She had nodded in response to his question if she’d worn clothing that could take a beating. Part of her wanted to keep the jumper dry, but then that’s why she had her swimsuit on. The things in the box hardly looked like it was safe to wear, anyhow. Especially the wetsuits.
And then came even more of that mood. As a matter of fact, she knew quite well that she wasn’t the center of the universe. “There are grindylows in the lake,” she said when the Ravenclaw girl had spoken of the possibility, raising her hand as well. Back to thoughts of that field trip. “There is at least one hippocampus in the lake as well, and centaurs in the forest along with the unicorns and acromantulas.” Not to mention the birds and other mundane creatures that could be found in the grounds, or all the creatures in the barns.

In contrast, Nina was not-so-delighted she could join them today. Nor did she understand why Professor Cornish met her polite, yet withdrawn gaze with a smile. He was so weird. She hated all of it. The Slytherin watched him curiously, however, as he continued to greet the rest of the students upon their arrival. His responses to their outlandish greetings were entertaining if nothing else. But she still disapproved, for the record. When Indigo came to join her, Nina met his small smile with one of her own. This would probably be the last good thing that happened during the lesson. She knew better than to set high expectations for this class.
As for the first question, it was utterly insulting. Despite his brief disclaimer, he had really set the standard low. Though apparently the others didn't agree, as they answers they gave were far too enthusiastic in Nina's opinion, and excessive for that matter. He had asked a simple question and yet when they opened their mouths, instead of answers came half-baked agreements to Professor Cornish's musings. It was ridiculous. You could tell that they all wanted to win points in their Professor's book. It was distasteful and rather pathetic. Nina would never stoop so low. Not that she even wanted this particular Professor to sing her praises. His opinion didn't make much of a difference to her.
Clearly they were going to study a lake-inhabiting creature today, otherwise the swimming costumes wouldn't have been required. Their meeting point was also a rather large giveaway and why some students were answering with creatures that did not belong near or in the water was an absolute mystery. Though perhaps given the intellect level of some of her classmates, it wasn't a mystery after all. Nina scoffed at the mentioned of 'giant spiders', as one would expect more from a Prefect. The so-called 'giant spiders' were known as acromantulas, everyone knew that. To reduce them to spiders was to strip them of their magical decent. Again, not that Nina cared.
As for herself, she typically opted for staying quiet during lessons, but she did make a few exceptions every now and then. Typically the answers she voiced in Creatures, in particular, were hopeful ones. "Plimpies," she had seen a few bop their heads up from the lake in the past. Nina Castillo was NOT a fan of fish, but she'd much rather work with those than grindylows. And so, the Slytherin continued to stand still in her spot, her shoulders slightly tense and her face fighting off a look of disdain for the sake of remaining somewhat respectful and highly dignified.

Eiji found himself paying a little too much attention to Kaiser and his conversation with the professor, the one about the swimsuit. For reasons. Quite literally hanging on every word, he was actually a little irritated when Nina came into his line of sight. He wasn't sure how to feel about that since he preferred to have no distractions when he was actually trying to learn and he knew how everything about this lesson was a cue for a long string of complaints, eye rolls, and unnecessary wrinkled noses.
Like that one there. See?
"........costumes. The man said costumes," he muttered under his breath while his eyes glanced over at the box. No thank you. He would simply administer the Impervius Charm to his own clothes and call it a day.
So no. No thank you on the coming up and grabbing anything. Rather the fourth year patted his pockets for his wand while the professor began class...and he gave Nina's side a sharp jab at the center of the universe comment. "Yeah...do you know that?" She was new, after all.
Not really feeling like offering up any response of his own, Eiji Rasting tended to bank on the attentive listening route for participation, he couldn't help himself with Patrick spoke up. "Acromantula," he corrected, offering the sixth year a lazy look as he finally found his wand inside his pocket and pulled it out.

Knowing that they were encouraged to wear a bathing suit or else have to borrow one, Hanna had put hers on underneath her uniform. Her old uniform. It was still clean and pressed, only a smidge shorter than her new one. It was far too big for Lena, which was why they weren't hand-me-downs. She agreed wholeheartedly with the nippy and dank bit, and felt her mood shifting the past few weeks as winter approached. She did not like winter.
She was getting used to Professor Cornish by now, and tended not to take it personally. Anymore. But some of the things he said still almost made her eyes widen. Hanna had a think of all the creatures, large and small, and all of the magical and mundane plants and fungi. There were so many. So many that they knew about, and surely just as many they didn't. Raising her hand, keeping in mind the anything part, Hanna said "Professor everything at Hogwarts is covered in bacteria. Like, in the lake and the forest, they help continue the circle of life. Decomposing plant and animal matter." Bacteria were strangely fascinating, and it had been a mind blowing experience when she learnt that they didn't only cause illness, but were vital components of many things.

That Ellie got a nod in greeting that she perceived as friendly from Professor Cornish was something that added to the brightening of her mood. The tip to make her more happy and excited for class though despite the cold was when Sammy came over and stopped by her side. Glancing sideways at him she affirmed quietly. "Hi Sammy, yes i’m cold. Aren’t you cold too?" Sammy’s wiggling bare feet just made Ellie feel even colder by just looking at them. Shrugging she replied with a look between both Stella and Sammy. "I hope the giant squid races us all with a memorable visit during our lesson but does either of you know if Bartholomew likes big crowds?" A whole assembled and loud mouthed class on the shoreline, might scare him off.
Professor Cornish started the lesson some minutes later which made Ellie wonder how and if they we’re expected to take notes. They had nothing to sit or write on and a quick glance around showed that nobody had their parchments out so she had to rely on memory. Raising her hand Ellie answered ”Doesn’t fairies and pixies live on the grounds? I’ve heard that you also can find growing gillyweed here by the lake, is that true professor?” Gillyweed you ate when you wanted to breath under water like the fishes do.

'Don't fall into the fire' was a very weird set of instructions but it was enough to make Lucas chortle. He wasn't part salamander so no, falling into the fire wasn't an option for him unfortunately. He couldn't help but wonder how great it would be to be a Salamander right now but....... well, they didn't live for very long, did they? Especially outside of the flames.
The clap from Cornish was enough to break him out of his thoughts and glance over at the man, instead. Was he aware that they weren't the centre of the universe? Uh, yeah? His mind immediately started to wander towards astronomy and how, no, they could never be the centre of something so big. It was impossible!
But they weren't talking about astronomy, unfortunately, so he started looking around him, instead. He...... had half a mind to say salamander, just to be funny - because he, Lucas Dakest, CAN be funny not - but he also didn't know how Cornish would react to that so..... he had to find something else. Something like......
........... "Um, well," he started, moving a hand away from the fire to raise it up in the air, "they aren't here here but there are winged horses in the barns." And they were great and he loved them.

Kam didn’t really mind swimming, except for the fact that it was cold and kind of misty out, but she could swim well.
She looked up at the Professor as he started to speak and she spared a glance for the box full of things they could wear if they forgot their swimsuit.
No thank you! She was glad she remembered hers.
And of course she knew she wasn’t the center of the universe, she was highly well aware of that, but she cut off her bitter inner monologue, as she raised her hand.
“The lake is teeming with creatures such as the Giant Squid and merpeople. ” There also could still be Inferi in there.. but who knew.
“Teeming. Exactly,” Cornish gave the girl a nod.

Looking back at Professor Cornish he smiled, “We are completely mediocre when it comes to our placement on the food chain. He would like to think that only cool little fluff balls and unicorns floated around the school but he really hated the idea of giant spiders or even snakes... ew.

Very helpful for many medicinal things, but can also be used for a wide variety of things." Eniola answered. Out here there's so many things living and nonliving creatures. Especially with how many creatures have been coming out of the Forbidden Forest lately and hanging closer to the Lake.
Now, those were reasonable answers. Important, too, and not obvious. At least they weren’t all saying unicorns. “The very basis of life to my mind, seaweed and moss. Very important to our home here.”

“There are grindylows in the lake… mean little buggers. And bowtruckles, who I also find to be fairly mean, although at least they have a reason for it.” And two unique suggestions, which he appreciated.

And moving on… “We have plenty of pixies, and you can occasionally find fairies. They’re show offs, so the best way to catch a fairy is to place a mirror in one of the fairy circles in the forest.” Not the point. Focus. “But not gillyweed, I’m afraid. It’s a salt water plant, prefers warmer waters.”

“True, there are winged horses in the barn and that is our home as well, but there’s a reason the winged horses are fed and housed rather than being allowed to roam in the forest. For one, these winged horses are domesticated and don’t know how to forage very well. For the other, they eat the food meant for unicorns and thestrals that do live here, and there isn’t enough for all. Winged horses have voracious appetites. So they’re here, but they aren’t at home here.”
That was a good enough list for him, and Cornish was tired of the question already. They’d come up with more plants and animals as they moved on to his next question. “Some of your suggestions were plants or creatures that are found at Hogwarts but that don’t necessarily exist here naturally. This is not their ecosystem, and their presence has to be carefully managed so it doesn’t upset the delicate balance nature has created here. Too many of one creature means that a certain plant is overeaten. It could lead to the extinction of that plant, or the starving death of that creature once the plant is gone. It could mean a competing creature starves instead. And that’s just one possible example… there are hundreds of worse case scenarios you could dream up if given half a chance.”
And honestly, they didn’t need to dream up any scenarios. The ecosystem of the Hogwarts grounds was terribly unbalanced and messed up. It was obvious to him; was it obvious to any of them? Could they see the same signs he could?
“So let’s catch up those of you who didn’t pass biology back in primary school.” Because it wasn’t like they taught important things like that here or anything. “What’s an ecosystem? And using the list of living things we just created, plus any others you want to add, who can give me an example of a food chain? Let’s follow the path of life through our ecosystem and see where it gets us. You can do land or water based… or both, if you’re feeling creative.”
Two questions, and you can answer either/both. What is an ecosystem, and give an example of a food chain. I’ve included the creatures/plants/other listed below.
Snow Miser | Munchy | Molly Hooper | T | Hey, you | Phantom | Mrs. Chris Evans | Brat Pack | Tristalen
Kam wasn’t sure if her answer was good or not, but it would have to do. Especially as they were now moving on and she had to rack her brain for what an ecosystem was, or even give an example of a food chain.
Uhhhh..
Her mind fully and totally blanked.. if it was a magical question, she would totally be right there.. but biology? She shifted her weight a little and crossed her arms and became oh so fascinated with the dirt under her feet.
Wasn’t it fun? Oh so dirt like!
Her blue eyes were glued to it as she didn’t respond and hope no one would notice her casually looking at the ground.
Sassenach | RAVENPUFF | Sing me a song of a lass that is gone | bookDRAGON | #awkwardturtle<#
For a very tense second there Hanna was sure he was about to give her a telling-off or something. But no, it seemed to be accepted and Hanna relaxed her shoulders ever so slightly.
Thinking about ecosystems, one area of CoMC that was definitely theory and therefore more enjoyable to this Ravenclaw, Hanna raised her hand. "An ecosystem describes an area and how all of the living and non-living things in that area interact."
Thinking back to the things people said, Hanna realised she couldn't very well remember the food chain of many of these animals. Perhaps she could for moss, or even bacteria, but she could hardly remember what each of these creatures consumed, and which creatures those creatures consumed, and so forth. What species would die off, or take over, if any of those creatures were to disappear?

Huh?
Rylee appeared slightly confused at the Professors question of her well-being. She was quite alright. Perfectly in fact. There was nothing at all to see here. Did she look ill to him? "I'm alright, Professor," she smiled more warmly at the man this time around. Nothing at all was wrong here. No cause to worry. Yet. All worrying could be left until she had to get into the water.
For the first question Rylee remained quiet, inwardly cringing at the mention of Grindylow. Her gaze subconsciously drifted down towards her left leg where she knew there to be fading claw marks. For several long moments she found herself reliving that day during a part Creatures Companion lesson. It was a day she really didn't want to remember. Shudder.
Letting out a slow breath she was able to pull herself back to the here and now just in time for the next question. Raising her hand she decided to give an example of a food chain since Hanna explained what an ecosystem was. "A small food chain could be algae, fish and grindylow." Mhmm. Oddly enough she went with the one creature she wasn't fond of.

........and people thought he was the one with the ego?
Staring at the man almost vacuously when the professor not only also corrected Dooley after he already had and entirely discredited the Slytherin doing so, but then expected the fourth year to offer up another answer. No thanks. He had contributed to that vein and would pass on any subsequent responses there.
And this question as well.
Instead, while talk of ecosystems went on, Eiji positioned himself behind Nina and that Ravenclaw bloke so he could set to waterproofing his clothes. Costumes were not on his agenda today either, thanks. Muttering Impervius under his breath, he began working on his shoes first and then his trousers. His shirt he did not care about getting wet - frankly, he didn't care about his trousers and shoes either but he was looking for something to occupy his time. That, and he could admire the primary producers of their surroundings - the plants and algae, to be exact. All things he would be collecting today with the phials tucked safely in his pockets.

Ellie knew it had been a long shot but she was a little deflated to hear to that gillyweed couldn’t be found out here on the grounds. She dropped it next moment though as Professor Cornish asked them what they knew about ecosystems and food chains. She stood still trying to remember what her mother had told a few years ago. When she finally remembered Ellie raised her hand to answer. "A ecosystem is a community like for example our great lake where living organisms such as the merpeople live in conjunction with non-living components of their environment and they all interact in a system." Did that make sense?
For the second question Ellie tried to think of a forest example that was different from what Rylee had just said. She didn’t want to repeat and get looks from the other lioness. "Um a food chain if a muggle example is okay then grass , grasshopper, toad, snake and hawk." Hopefully at least one of her answers was okay.

Though Eiji was correct about the eye rolls and wrinkled noses, he was off about the long string of complaints. Nina planned to keep those to herself, she had nothing but disdain for this class (and their Professor), but she knew better than to disrespect an adult. Only idiots and Gryffindors (often synonymous) would do such a reckless thing. While Nina wasn’t desperate for their Professor’s praise—a unique quality, apparently—she’d rather not spend her spare time in detention. It would be an absolute waste.
The mutterings of her housemate elicited a subtle smirk. Nina didn’t know why he was so unhappy about the costumes, but it would be dishonest to say that she wasn’t entertained by it. The smug look on her features was entirely too short lived, as his sharp jab managed to wipe the look off her face in one swift motion. Remember those eye rolls Eiji had mentioned? They were quite deadly and he was now on the receiving end of one himself.
Normally she would have given him a sharp jab right back, but Professor Cornish took care of that rather immediately. His dismissal of Eiji’s response was actually a welcome surprise. Typically Nina found everything about the Creature’s Professor to be off-putting. But this, this actually elicited the TINIEST stifled giggle from the sour Slytherin. Yes, she was quite smug. And still had her lips pursed, for the record.
Also, why did he keep looking at her like that? Like she was the best student he had ever had? Honestly, it was SO weird.
Nina hated it. His praise only amplified her demeanor.
And again, the next question posed to the class was another highly insulting attempt to fish for mundane responses and unnecessary contributions. Again, Nina found herself quite disinterested in the simplistic and ill-thought out answers of her peers. Of course an ecosystem was a system. It was written within the word itself. Why the Gryffindor deemed that as a meritorious remark to share with the class was absolutely beyond her. It must be a horrible thing to be sorted into Gryffindor house. To be surrounded by an entire Common Room of peers who didn’t see their brain as a vital organ sounded like a living hell.
It was a wonder as to how some of the kids had made it this far. Again, when it was her turn to speak she offered her answer with the same tense-stance and subtle distaste, ”the sun, algae, water-snails, plimpies, humans, acromantulas.” Land and water based, though she wasn’t feeling creative so it’d be best that he didn’t think otherwise.
Why wasn’t this class over yet?

As always, Eniola loves to learn and hearing questions that cause some of her classmates to think is always nice for her because she gets to learn other's thought processes and how they will communicate it. People really can be fascinating. Annoying sometimes...but fascinating.
"Well, going off of my previous answer. Seaweed uses photosynthesis so it doesn't eat anything, but it does use the sun and the water and the seaweed itself is food for many creatures like sea urchins for example, then going up the food chain from there you'd have crabs, seals, orca or killer whales and lastly humans. Although there are plenty of animals that will eat humans as well like acromantula, crocodiles, tigers and more than I could probably name or that you care to use the time for." Eni finished. Whew, that was a lot of talking! She thought to herself as she tried to then fade into the background having answered the question. A bit long-winded, but hey - he asked.

Nothing to see here.
Wow, he’d broken one of them already. Cornish raised an eyebrow at the girl and watched her study the dirt like it held the secrets of the universe. It probably did, considering the whole ‘life cycle’ theme they had going right now. “Keighley. If the dirt is more interesting than I am, I’m going to give up teaching immediately.” Not to put too much on her shoulders.

“Right, and the interaction is key,” Cornish gave the girl ANOTHER nod… and he was sure that he was going to ruin her with all this rampant praise and attention. “And I bet if you really try, you can figure out an example. Hop to it.”

“Yes. And take it one further. What feeds the algae? What eats the grindylow? It’s a circle, not a straight line, so bring it back around.” Not that he’d push all of them further than they were willing to travel, but the big smiles made him want to… y’know. Stretch her a bit.

“Rasting. A food chain involving an Acromantula. I want to hear your thoughts.”

“Something like that.” Technically correct, although he felt like she was trying really hard to impress him. Trust the man when he said it: he was impressed by a 40-foot curl, by the flash of sun off a merrow fin, those unicorns they’d seen a few weeks back, but he wasn’t impressed by any answers they could give. They had to do a little work, get their hands dirty, first. “Good example, and those are all plants and animals you could find at Hogwarts.”

Land and water based. Showing off in spite of how hard she pretended not to want to be there. Classic Castillo. Cornish gave her a little salute. “Fine. That answer was fine.”

That was every food chain in the entire universe. Well, at least on this planet. “Certainly a complete answer, Abara, although we don’t have orcas or tigers at Hogwarts. I’m pretty sure Professor Beryl is part crocodile.” Just a musing, but he had a good sense of these things.
Fair examples from the lot of them, and they must get the idea by now. Ecosystems. Food chains. The balance of life at Hogwarts, not including the hundreds of students recklessly thundering around the place. They were not part of the balance. Cornish gathered his thoughts for a moment, since it wasn’t in anyone’s best interest for him to rant about living in harmony with their present ecosystem.
“I imagine that from the examples you’ve just heard, you’re getting a picture about how we’re all interrelated. And about how easy it would be for the entire place to go sideways. Think about that. Think about how adding extra fertilizer to the gardens could wash off into the lake, which would cause the algae to bloom more than it already does. Too much algae blocks the sun from the plants that grow in the shallows, kills off the creatures who feed and live there. And then the larger creatures, the predators, have nothing to eat, and they die off or leave. Just because we want our vegetables to grow.” He smiled, a surprising flash of teeth considering how everything in his story just died.
“So that’s terrible. But let’s just keep playing the game of terribles. I want you to think about what you’ve experienced at Hogwarts during your time here… the good and the bad, the intruders and the disasters. Think about what you’ve studied about past events at Hogwarts over the past thousand years. How do you think those events have impacted this ecosystem? And to be clear, I’m talking about the forest and the lake. Everything on the Hogwarts grounds, but not further. No more orca whales, please.”
Big broad question here – how have historical events at Hogwarts impacted the ecosystem? You can keep answering past questions or you can ASK questions or you can keep refusing to answer us. The main event starts in 24 hours!

Sebastian had been slightly distracted as usual and only pulled himself out of his stupor when class began. He was sort of annoyed by what Avalon said, but she was only a first year and probably didn't know much about Bowtruckles. They were actually really sweet creatures if you worked with them properly. Raising his hand he said, "There are Thestrals and Mooncalves that live in the forest, sir." He said with a small smile while listening to the other students answers.
As the next set of questions came around he noticed that Kam was staring at the ground...which typically meant she wasn't sure about an answer. It was a good thing this was his favorite class. He quickly raised his hand waiting to be called on again. "Well, a few people already stated what an ecosystem is so a relevant food chain for the Hogwart's grounds would be; the sun and rain feed corn, mice eat corn, owls eat mice, and foxes eat owls." He said with a grin and a nod.
This sure was an interesting subject. He wasn't exactly sure where this was going but he was excited to see what the Professor had in mind for their activity.
But there was another question to answer before they could get to that. Sebastian quickly raised his hand and waited to be called on before saying, "Well, a couple terms ago when the Inferi attack happened, the came out of the lake and went back in, as well as Professors and students fighting them around the lake. The Inferi could have disturbed and harmed many ecosystems within the lake as well as those fighting them, causing many to either die off if they were damaged enough or leave the lake entirely for safety causing damaging effects to the food chain." Yep. That could happen!
He wondered what the other students would say. He was only a first year when the Inferi attack happened so he wasn't allowed to help fight even if he had wanted to. It was still scary to see and hear.

A lot of examples flooded Hanna's mind, at the request of Professor Cornish, but the sudden anxiety at needing to come up with an answer right there left her speechless. She couldn't put a cohesive answer together. Luckily he moved on to Rylee, but Hanna was left feeling incomplete in her answer. She just needed to formulate a complete thought before speaking. Sure.
History combined with creatures. Well, Hanna loved history and thinking back over what had happened to have an impact on the Hogwarts Ecosystem was quite easy. Hanna raised her hand and said "Any time a creature is introduced to an ecosystem, it changes. One example would be in... in..." what year was it? Hanna blinked, remembering. "1995, a giant was introduced to the forest. It was huge, and angry, and ate anything it could get its hands on." Or she assumed it did, anyway. Giants could eat any meat and plant matter. "I know some of the larger animals fled the area. The animals who they preyed upon were left without a predator, besides the giant. The plant life was changed, some of left alone to grow, and others eaten, made extinct. The circle of life, even just for that period, was changed."

Holly wasn’t entirely sure why they needed to be in something old and with their swimming stuff on, but she had just shrugged and pulled on a pair of her trousers (that fit around the waist, but were now very much on the cropped side of trousers after her growth spurt) and her quidditch jumper from last year that also now came up a few inches from her wrists and sat at a stupid length (so they had been pulled up to her elbows) on over the top of one of her bikini’s. She didn’t own one-pieces, but it was fine. She liked swimming in the lake, and in the ocean when she was at home. Nothing better after a long gymnastics session than jumping in the icy water before having a warm (okay, tepid) bath.
Hair pulled back in a messy bun, Holly waved at the Professor as she got closer, her feet encased in an old pair of plimsoles that had a hole in the bottom of them. She’d almost thrown them out when she’d realised they had a hole in them, but figured she could use them today and then they could go to shoe heaven… heh. Flying shoessss. That was a funny thought. “Morning, Professor.”

“Okay, let’s get started. I know it’s a bit nippy and dank, but you’ll be plenty warm once we start moving again. I want to make sure that everyone’s worn clothes that can get wet or dirty? And a bathing suit is best… I have extras in the box here.” The box full of neon shaded shorts and raggedy t-shirts with holes in them, as well as more than one mildewy wetsuit for the truly brave.
He waited only a moment, trusting that anyone who needed a bathing costume would come up and grab something to wear. Onward and whatever. “I don’t want to insult any of your intelligence, but are you all aware that you’re not the center of universe? And I mean that… not from an astronomical perspective, but a biological one. Look around you. The grounds here at Hogwarts are literally crawling with creatures, teeming with plant life, crawling with the creepy crawlies we can’t see unless we really look for them. So do that for a moment. Look around and tell me who else lives here. What else. Plants, animals, anything.”
Hey folks! Sorry he’s a grump, but know that it’s in good fun and I love you. Answer as creatively and fully as you want, but know that I will move on sooner rather than later so we don’t lose our momentum. You can always play catch-up.
…… Holly was suddenly very happy with her awkward-lengthed trousers and too-long-but-too-short-sleeved t-shirt as she took a look at the box of clothes on offer. Ew. No thank you. She gave the Professor a look, judged he was serious and then nodded her head. Just to make sure that he knew that she wouldn’t be wearing anything from that box. No thank you.
Rude. Holly Tamesis was very much amazing and very much the center of the Tamesis family. Thank you. Her brother loved her, so did their parents. Her best friends were amazing and Avery liked her too. Mmmmhmmm. She was very happy thank you.
Oh. Creatures. Right…. That made sense...
”Well there are Centaur’s like Professor Thereos… and I think I read in a History book that they have been living in the Forbidden Forest since before the Great Wars 100 years ago…” She was pretty sure she’d read something about them and Unicorns and Harry Potter?? Maybe she was making it up, but she knew that Centaur’s were here. That much was true at least…

Blink. Blink. Blink.
….. He… was cheery today.
Holly furrowed her eyebrows slightly, nibbling on her lip as she listened to the Professor being sad and down and depressing. She didn’t want everything to die just so she could eat vegetables. She didn’t really like them all that much, she just had to eat them for her training and to be healthy. She’d stop eating them all apart from carrots… and peas. She liked them. Maybe cauliflower… and Lettuce… couldn’t eat a salad without lettuce… Merlin… Sodit. She liked vegetables.
”Well, I’d assume the Great War affected a lot of creatures, since a lot of the actual castle was destroyed… surely that affected bugs and spiders and things that birds eat… which probably affected the bigger creatures like …” She paused to think. ”Thestrals and Hippogriffs if there were any here?” She was guessing… but it sounded somewhat logical. ”That and we’re probably really loud. So her ever so casual looking at the dirt had caught the Professor’s attention. “Of course it’s not Professor Cornish. ” The answer was quiet as she looked up at him again. “I just wasn’t sure of an answer.” She responded with a lip bite. Truth was hard for her, but she knew she needed it classes.
As for his next question, Bast had answered what she was going to say before she could say it! The Inferi attack was the most recent she could remember, at least on the grounds. And she still had a scar on her leg due to it, so that was burned into her memory.
She raised her hand, “I’m sure all the Giant spiders everywhere couldn’t have been good for the ecosystem. ” Was her answer vague? Yes.. yes it was.

Nina was almost convinced that their Professor was a sadist. The grin he flashed after explaining the horrible ramifications of a tampered food chain did not go unnoticed. In fact, everything about him went unnoticed in this Slytherin's eyes as she was watching him very intently with a displeased sort of curiosity. He was so weird. Everything he did proved it .
And though she would never admit it, she wasn't hating the present lesson as much as she did previous ones. Not because of the subject matter, but because everything thus far had been theory based. If Creatures lessons were all this way she would take no real issue to them aside from the fact that animals were not at all interesting in the slightest. It was the practice that she really hated. Nina Castillo did not like to touch animals, thank you very much.
But a question with historical basis? She didn't mind giving it thought. In the year 1991 under the guise of Quirinus Quirrell, Voldemort slew unicorns in the forrest. That probably caused over-vegetation which could have potentially lead to invasive species of plants taking up space normally taken by plants that acted as food for other animals. Maybe. But instead of answering out loud, Nina simply practiced her usual look reserved for this class.

.....what was this torture? Honestly.
His expression turned sour when the professor decided that now he wanted to hear what the fourth year had to say...and Nina earned herself another jab with his elbow into her side. He had his own dirt on you, Nina, that was slowly accumulating over each Creatures lesson so be careful what you were giggling at.
And he wanted to be snarky, ask if he wanted an answer based on a proper acromantula or simply a 'giant spider', but he held his tongue.
"You seemed satisfied by the answer Nina gave which included acromantulas. Would hate to repeat answers again," he offered coolly in reply instead. Though he did offer something regardless. "...human, acromantula." Very inspiring. Much wow.
And then the next question popped up and Eiji was more than fully content to just keep his mouth shut for this one too. Though it also seemed like Professor Cornish would now take great pleasure in calling him out and demanding answers. Stay quiet and Eiji lost. Speak up and he still lost. And Eiji Rasting hated losing...almost as much as he as beginning to hate this class.
Though something did pop up in discussion, this inferi attack, that half sparked his interest. He had spent all of it in the common room with Eloise watching the bodies walk towards the shore through the windows in the common room. Was also where he had finally sorted the name for his hairless rat after owning it for a year.
"Considering how that treasure in the lake had been there for centuries...Viking in origin or something like that if I recall correctly, the inferi too had been hidden in the depths of the lake for centuries as well, right? So were they not, over time, assimilated into the ecosystem of the lake? Perhaps the flesh on the bodies provided nourishment for carnivorous creatures who happened upon them and such. So their eventual permanent removal by the Ministry, likewise, was a disturbance to the lake's established ecosystem."
And look. Someone else was calling them giant spiders. Eiji held his tongue once again.

Nettie found this lesson so incredibly BORING. She really liked this professor, and he seemed to know what he was talking about, it was the TOPIC that was failing to hold her attention today. Taking tons of electives had SOUNDED like a great idea when she'd signed up for them, and she had definitely been rethinking that this term. This was probably one she'd keep, but she needed to be ENERGIZED if she was going to stick around...
She raised her hand after a few moments of thought, however, and decided to contribute her first answer to the class. Hopefully this question and answer bit would be over soon and they could move on to more fun activities. "Well, in the Triwizard Tournament that Harry Potter competed it, they had dragons being kept in the forest to use for the competition. They had to eat SOMETHING, so I'm assuming whatever the wizards supplied for their food threw things off balance after some time," she explained. She couldn't imagine dragons - and a Hungarian Horntail, no less - being happy that they were just supplied old meat. It was safe to assume they let them hunt SOME times, right?

Rasting was really pushing his luck, and Cornish gave him a flat look. All eyebrows, no nonsense. “You’re very good at sarcasm, Rasting. See me after class so we can discuss your skills further. Now, de Luca and Rasting bring up an interesting point. The inferi incursion a few years back was definitely disruptive to the ecosystem. At the point that they entered the lake, the ecosystem had to adapt around them, and now we’re at the point where, as Rasting says, the ecosystem essentially includes them.”
But sassy pants wasn’t entirely correct. “I could argue that the entering and leaving of the lake was not something it was adapted to. All those feet, walking where feet aren’t intended to walk, turning over rocks and stirring up the dirt.” Aside from that… “What do you two think, then? Can the lake survive the disturbance of their loss?”

She was so nervous. Merlin. Had he grown horns or something? Cornish perked when she finally spoke, though, since her example was excellent. And she pushed it through to its conclusion. “The giant in the forest. A new apex predator. Knocked down some trees, too, and you can still see the damage. That’s a good one. But it’s unlikely that the environment hasn’t mostly recovered a hundred years later.” Mostly. It was hard for them to imagine how very quickly nature recovered… and yet how long their impact weighed on things.

Students, I mean.”
The Battle of Hogwarts. Good example, although also nearly 100 years ago. “That battle was devastating to the forest. The giants tromping through alone killed off plants and frightened away wildlife. Very good example. And imagine how rebuilding continued to effect the plants and animals around here…”

Yes.. yes it was.
“Acromantulas,” Cornish clarified absently. “Introduced to the ecosystem in the 1950’s. Drove away most of the other natural predators from the forest… yes. It’s tempting to say they’re just part of the environment as we know it, but they were a foreign invader when the first acromantula showed up. Really genius answer.” They were both surprised.

Castillo was still broken. Cornish coughed into his fist and gave her a pointed look before moving on. Maybe she was confused by the subject matter. It was terribly advanced.

“Luckily those dragons only lived here for a few weeks, but I imagine during that time, every creature in the forest trembled,” Cornish half smiled at the thought. Dragons could exist in forests just like these, but they would have driven off the acromantula, the unicorns, the thestrals. It was lucky they hadn’t been scared away for good.
Enough of the talking. If the students weren’t completely exhausted by the chatter, then they were real gluttons for punishment. He had a much lower threshold for pain, and he wanted to do some actual good work now. Let those glazed expressions be replaced by a little hard work, sweat, maybe tears.
“I want us to start thinking proactively about what it takes to keep this ecosystem balanced and about what we should be doing to take care of it. I realize this makes me sound like some sort of rabid eco-warrior, which is exactly what I am, I suppose. It matters what we do here, the learning and spellcasting and socializing, so add to that list ‘eco-warrioring’. Just do it and don’t fight with me until your grade is posted.” Cornish abandoned his spot at the front of the group to stand amid the piles he’d placed on the beach.
“Here’s what we’re doing for the rest of the class. I’ve set up four different activities you can do that are necessary to getting our lake and surrounding area back into top notch order. You can do all four, but you must do at least two different tasks. Experience the full breadth of warrioring today.” He pointed to a pile of fabric bags. “First task, pick up any trash you find on the grounds and beach and as deep into the lake as you’re willing to wade. I want you to pay particular attention to how this trash is impacting creatures, especially in the lake. If you find ANYTHING injured, bring it to me immediately and we’ll take care of it.”
Next, he moved to a bucket filled with glass phials. “Second task, take water and soil samples from the beach and shallow water. I have some friends who will run some tests for us, but we need to get a thorough sampling. If you’re a good swimmer, feel free to take samples from the deeper water. I want all phials labelled with the location it was taken.”
And on to the stack of empty fish tanks. They looked so sad and lonely with no water or fish in them. “Third task, we need to repopulate the snail population in the lake, since they are one of the fundamental foodstuffs for creatures like plimpies and grindylows. I want you to grab a tank and find a sunny spot near the Creatures hut. We’ll move them inside when it starts to get colder. Fill the tank with water, add some of the plants I’ve gathered here, and add a few of these snails. I call them ‘starter snails’, for lack of a better word. Finally, add an algae tablet… and in a few days, we’ll start to see baby snails in the tank.”
The last pile were the long weighted nets. “Fourth task, plimpy capture and release. One of our particular problems at Hogwarts is that the plimpies’ legs can tangle in fallen trees limbs in the water, or when the lake is churned up and turbulent. I want you to use the weighted nets to drag the lake bottom for tangled plimpies. Examine what you find, bring me the injured ones, untangle those who aren’t injured, and then release the plimpies before they get thoroughly weirded out.”
And that was it. Time to get to work. “Keep moving, return to the fire when you get cold, and don’t be reckless with yourselves or with our creatures. Come to me if you need help or advice, but otherwise, leave me alone. Get started.”
Pick any two of the tasks listed above. I want to see at least two good posts per task, or more than that if you’re working with friends (and I encourage you to work with friends!). The tasks are: picking up trash, collecting samples, creating snail tanks, and catching plimpies. Let me know if you need help.

Eiji needed to stop jabbing his elbow into her petite body. She was going to bruise after this lesson. Though his jab did very little to wipe the amused expression off her face. This was one of the most enjoyable Creatures lessons they had ever had. Nina was trying to keep her usual disinterested look in place, but it was quite difficult when Professor Cornish was calling Eiji out for his attitude. Well deserved on Eiji’s part, Nina was VERY pleased. She ALMOST even smiled at their Professor. And again, she was stifling a giggle that she refused to let escape from her mouth. Merlin forbid anyone from thinking she was enjoying herself. Or the lesson for that matter.
Her Professor’s pointed look at her only received pointed look right back. What?
Her attention quickly went back to Professor Cornish as moved around to explain their task. And in a surprising turn of events, Nina hardly even rolled her eyes ONCE. Though picking up trash and filling phials was not ideal, they wouldn’t be dealing with any animals today. She’d take trash over grindylows any day. For the record. And so her look of displeasure was FAR milder than normal. She almost even looked pleased. ALMOST.
And for the record, Professor Cornish had mentioned Plimpies not just once. But twice. But who was counting?
She turned back to the Slytherin standing to her right, ”Let’s pick up trash,” she tugged on his elbow (the one he had been using to jab her the entirety of the lesson) to pull him out of the crowd of students.
Nina didn’t want to go into the lake. It was dirty.

Days of Potter 2023:___________________________ Which Bertie Botts Flavour Are You?
Ellie at first felt like sitting out answering Professor Cornish last question since she was brand new to the school. She had avid read every page in her Hogwart’s a History book but knew that she had less knowledge of happenings and events than say student’s that we’re now in their seventh year. Ellie could only think of one event that might have disturbed an ecosystem but she didn’t know if it would suffice.
However as Maeve had told her the other day it was always better to say something than to remain silent. Raising her hand Ellie said tentatively with a sideways glance at Sammy. "I read in Hogwarts a History recently about a ghost pirate ship that appered on the lake. Couldn’t both the ship and it’s restless spirits have disturbed the lake’s ecosystem? I mean the fish, merpeople and other lake creatures must have felt the spirits as a threat and scared creatures could have attacked and killed each other. It’s also possible that the ship while it was there could have made the lake water sick and bad for the lake inhabitants to feed on and that could have upset the ecosystem if some plants died out."
-------------------------------
Professor Cornish moved on the lesson offering them a variety of tasks to complete. Taking water samples sounded doable and making snail tanks sounded fun. She was not in the mood to pick up any trash or catch plimpies. She understood why it would help the lake’s ecosystem though. Grabbing a tank Ellie looked around for a partner. ”Does anyone want to help me make some snail tanks?”
